Georgia Watch Along Show: Georgia vs. Tennessee Tech

[Music] hello everybody Welcome to the Georgia watchalong show my name is Rod Dey I'm joined by former Georgia Bulldogs head coach and behind the camera that you're you're seeing us from there's a plaque on the wall says the National Football Foundation the college Hall of football Fame would like to induct Jim Donan into that said Hall of Fame so he's the Hall of Famer there in black today he's going to a uh uh be here and comment on the entire game game for you we enjoy the we had like 30,000 people join us last week we hope we get more this week for the George's home opener behind us football going on yeah I mean uh some of my favorite teams are losing Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State I can see how broken up you are about it you're about to cry I mean uh I'm surprised you're not wearing an Arkansas shirt power to Arkansas they look good so does uh Fran Brown doing a good job at Syracuse but Texas just getting after Michigan Michigan's offense is uh they need to get that sign SN uh guy back you know the Steeler U did you see that the the Conor stallion documentary yeah I did not I mean you talk about denial man he basically said he didn't do it so I guess what no the guy who was stealing signs said he wasn't stealing signs so uh looking forward to uh our kids today you know work hard all week and and there's a lot of them like to get a shot today I hope we get that uh plus we're playing at home going for number 41 in a row regular season that's hard to believe uh that is mindblowing really fantastic uh run that we've had and the thing about a game like this that that you worry about is you know being sloppy and the other team taking some chances and uh you know making you look bad sometimes you know an undisciplined team that's not as talented can do stuff that they're not supposed where to be where they're supposed supped to be based on the way you you know fundamentally coach your guys but they're so messed up that it makes you look bad so I don't think that I don't think that will happen today much but there'll be some of it and then uh some of these guys getting their first taste to getting in the games and we'll see how they handle it you said the same thing before that Nicholls State is it nickels state or they they were nickel state but then they dropped it and just became nickels you said the same thing and Georgia struggled because they had a defensive lineman who was really good and they were doing all this weird stuff and everybody overreacted myself included freaked out and you're just like look they're going to do some wild stuff so right it it was it was a very unnatural game but to The Naked Eyes like Georgia struggling well that was a good win though because fortunately for us we came back because we lost three games that year at home you know Tennessee Vanderbilt and uh Georgia Tech so that would have been another one Bobby Wilder's a good coach up there uh there uh you know he was a coach at Old Dominion and now he's taking over Tennessee Tech uh be interesting to see which quarterback they have the one that transferred from Missouri got hurt last week I I don't know what his name is but uh sure they'll tell us that but first play of the game as we see it underway double you're not going to really make a a lot of yards on Georgia doing that tell send them an email we SM if I'm if I'm Tennessee Tech though I'm going to try to run that clock and just love it when I make it first down that's two more minutes I don't see him throwing a ball a whole lot but you know they they might try to but uh I think they just going to get to check and get out of here uh of note they're showing number eight on the screen there Janelle Aguero uh he did not play last week Kirby Smart a muscle pool so he starts the game for Georgia at the star spot uh now he's that's interesting coach well they got mundan out there off the edge just move him to Star inside but remember last week we had a good coaching note before the game talking about the fact that he uh we kind of lost our power here I think it's a ESPN issue because I still hear them yeah but we lost our visual on them so we got the the C or D team on the uh ual uh I was going to say we're not going to see the better camera angles because they have fewer of them for this broadcast I you'd hope their main camera worked right third and 11 coach for Georgia to we got our Jaguar package in here uh going to have some new D lineman playing we got about three or four out so like Miller and timeout Tennessee Tech I'm G put my money on number 52 Christian Miller like you said that he is just a ball of energy I love watch it really is and good to see 93 back too you know he he missed some of the Fall Camp man the uh that is a small teamor is just a big team yeah I know yeah they took a time out there when they lined up for the uh now they're coming back there's Bobby Wilder they tried to yeah good job Espin y'all have no idea what the hell's going you know when he was uh coaching an Old Dominion he had that quarterback from Colin till that actually played for the Falcons some and uh they were pretty good Claude Felton being honored on the field the the if folks if you're watching upper right hand corner you see the new Press Box that is being dedicated in uh Claude Felton's honor the sports information director legendary guy uh and I tell people this all the time if were not for Claude Felton I would not be in this business Claude Felton probably the sports information director of anybody's lifetime yeah can I tell you a quick story about Claude from uh within the last year so I don't know why I asked I was just going to do it anyway yeah so for a long time on on my Twitter account I've just said that Georgia needs to name everything after Claude Felton that like I'm a fanboy for him and I just tweet a lot of nice things and photos and probably make him feel uncomfortable because he doesn't like the spotlight well one time I said when I think they were announcing that this Press Box was coming that they should name it the Claude Felton Press Box Claude gives me a call and in the most humble way from that man says hey there's some people that have paid money to have things named after them here and I don't want anybody get their feelings hurt on this so I appreciate it it's a very nice sentiment but just you know I I I I don't want to make anybody uncomfortable if they think that I'm trying to lobby for that and I said Claude you're not lobbying for anything stop being so darn nice that is the most clawed thing I've ever heard in my life yeah I'm not shocked there uh and I'll give you mine I I wrote Claude a letter uh when I was a freshman saying hey if you ever need a photographer you ever need an assistant if I can ever help out in anyway just let me know he hung on to that letter for three years then when Sports Illustrated was coming to film a Georgia Kentucky game he he handed a letter to uh Tim Hicks and said find this guy our Sports illustrator photographer need somebody to carry his gear that got me in the business so I mean who holds on to a letter from an idiot student for three years and remembers it hey I bet you carried that gear very well I did hey I got invited to the cover of the Super Bowl that year so for the same guy so point being it just it launched the whole thing and again without Claude we wouldn't be here so uh we've got we got a lot to talk about from our sponsor standpoint but uh coach Claude worked for Coach you know and uh yeah he he worked for us and he's always been a good guy so it just couldn't be a better um a better tribute right there and you know hey they win today I mean Claud was there in the what 1979 so winning today would be a football program or whatever athlet Department he did a great job for it third and 11 for Tennessee Tech tell they're running better than Clemson did yeah one of our prop bets is will they have over 188 yards of offense over under going to be interesting to see uh kicking game wise how the uh these athletes cover our guys because you got to tackle in open field you know what I'm saying and they're not used to this they did a pretty good job of changing around last week against Middle Tennessee actually took the lead there but uh we're faking like we're going to try to block I can see us backing out yeah let Anthony Evans uh see what he can do oh my goodness look at that man he'd be gone makes offense mad [Laughter] that right there was a tremendous decision there I mean he probably thought a fair call he probably thought look I'm not going to get many shots I'm GNA go for it here he goes to show you his running ability in the open field uh we talked about pre-season about his decision making and there were two guys on him so who is 40 two we're in the over might see etn here on a uh Cirby said good job but don't ever do that again here's his first play for etn Carson back pulled it touchdown probably looks to Dylan Bell yep one and done seven nothing Georgia well six nothing uh one play to Dylan Bell what tremendous example of don't bend over to catch the ball slide and use a bank board that's good job by Coy teaching him there uh that's such a big white out watch him sliding us his body here I mean you don't have to have that perfect deal catch it in your hands and all that b hey oh you remember for years they were teaching guys you know get it out here and don't let it come in and stuff like that yeah I mean that sounds good but hey well that's it for you they gotta be happy with that you know the best thing to do against us regardless of your talent level is go right at us because our speed just so overwhelming but looked like that that was really not their quarterback it was a wildcat guy I guess he just comes in to run it Tracy Thomas comments and says this is my first watch along live and it's fantastic I'm sitting in an Athens Motel despite tickets because reasons and my wife says the blind pigs drinks are the best or she will when she wakes up that's my that's my girl we got to get her we got to get her with this free Yeti how about 79 in motion there did you see that oh I did not but I just saw KJ Balden with a sack yeah showed that again 79 emotion I hadn't seen too many what the hell I mean what this 79 emotion watch him come along big old chardo well he didn't get there in time or he he kill KJ he had eaten KJ's clock I don't mean certainly we we we're not in the business of uh punking anybody but I was just saying the fact that you usually don't see a guy like that in motion but what if you do motion like that coach and you're running uh Power or running counter yeah I mean if he can get there he's a good blocker they're running speed option here it should be history yeah they got they got a yard out of it I wouldn't be surprised if Kirby doesn't practice a block here or he might just tell tell Evans Let Let coach did you find that coaching in these games was difficult in the sense of having your players motivated like they ought to be yeah I mean that plus you know you're trying to get other people in the game and all that but it's just a holding on tap rage well this probably be a screen it's just hard to create juice when it's not there sometimes biggest issue though the juice has to come because if you don't it practice your ass is in trouble there's the screen you're right you call the screen there it is pretty good tackle yeah yeah but by that I mean you know our team does so much combative stuff one versus one two versus two notice we got Mars in there pretty quick did he jerk rattet out for the penalty or no uh he was in there he was he was in at left I mean uh Morris was in at left he only played six plays last week I guess he practiced well yeah it's a good example of stopping yourself here let's see if we can come back it's working the boundary there we go could be little tunnel screen oh man they just picked him up and planted him they they can tackle coach so far hard do come third and 20 and why why did you figure that automatically they were going into the boundary there just because of the way they were the secondary was configured to the field okay you take that take what they're giving here yeah we love it's going in motion here Georgia with the third and 11 there's love it going in motion just like you said W big catch there by Oscar Delp yeah I mean we got two guys that didn't even touch the ball last week eat the end for suspension and now Delp that are among our better players but really good hitch there by uh by that I'll show you after the play what what he did but give Tay Rish credit too on the uh Dom love it making something out of nothing yeah Tate on that same play also picked up a great twist so what you want to do when you when you're throwing the ball is you want to always take a short six inch step with your left foot and if you don't throw it then you want to kind of hitch and gather yourself so you can do it again that's what he did WOW Carson Beck I really like the fact that uh Mike so far this year is moving Carson just enough to help your protection a little bit it's hard when it's not a run pass or a play action just a drop back Pass Time After Time even against lesser teams but just a little bit of movement where the guys have angles on people or blocking down just makes it so much easier to uh protect your quarterback particularly on first down where he eliminate the chance of a sack Jonathan e says mike Bobo has more screens than a hardware store I had heard that him before that's pretty good I also like when he goes to his right coach he steps into those throw so well Branson open field here go that was Big T I tell you some people big Savor trust to knock the whole pile forward some people were dogging him last week and I think he's such a valuable piece of the offense great pause yeah I mean just people did the same thing with Nick chub and Samir white when you have a major surgery I talked to him a little bit in person this week and he said you know I'm I've got I feel a lot better now coach uh Co young time lost and lucky time that's what I'm going to say they're in the red zone kby young in the Red Zone touchdown well fine just just take a Victory lap R just they brought him in for wasn't a fade or anything it's just he's big and and open well he it was an uncovered slant I mean yeah can't miss him I mean they could have he could have thrown it to me that was he was completely uncovered so coach I think you could have thrown that touchdown yeah I believe so I think you ran that touchdown I think I'm going to go out to the pool you guys got it down here I can't even talk jump ball here but hey uh seriously good job by uh giving everybody the ball on that drive and what he's got to be almost perfect so far eight of eight for 90 yards he's got about three more series probably yeah I mean there's no one there you know getting back to what we're talking about getting the team ready the fact that if you just think about who you're going against all week the defense is going against our guys this offense and our offense is going against one of the top defenses in the country so if you don't have your attitude out there like it needs to be you just can't throw it out there like you would in a game like this and hope to get by so uh I felt like we made some improvement this week on some issues that we wanted to improve on but the biggest thing is just having your players if you take out your starting back and you take out your starting nickel then everybody's having to assume different roles during the game last week which affects the continuity a little bit and so we weren't quite as smooth in the first half offensively and then defensively you know we got better once we made the move to to put uh Stark up there at Star so uh just a lot of good players out there a lot of good players and certainly looking at Texas today we're going to need them yeah Texas is looking fantastic but again uh Georgia is a different animal than Michigan and of course Michigan will shoot themselves on the foot a bit there now if somebody shoots you in the foot or you have an issue or let's say your somebody's dog bites you or someone rear ends you which I was driving to lrange this past uh uh Thursday or Wednesday and traffic had stopped I pulled over I was in the left lane and I stopped I looked behind me a car carrier was coming up and I could tell I'd been behind that guy earlier he's kind of swerving back and forth I looked up in the rear view saw him coming and I'm like this idiot doesn't have enough room luckily I pulled over under the shoulder and he the time it took him to stop was where my front fender was so if I had not moved I'd have been hit uh I didn't think if I been hit I'd have called my buddies at Morris and Dean Lawford now Morris and Dean um you need to check them out they're in the Calhoun area they've won Millions for their folks they they do criminal law but they also do personal injury uh we told you about the 87y old woman you know Syrian woman who was tasered by cops you know how quickly they took care of that for her if you call if you see like Morgan and Morgan or some of these you know Shar or all these other uh law firms on the big giant uh placards and things when you're going down the highway if you call them you're not going to speak to that lawyer you're gonna get sent to somebody else you're never going to speak to John Morgan who's a Gator by the way but if you call Dean you're going to speak to them you're gonna speak to a Georgia fan who's been around since the herel era so conversely on the sideline there's some either assistant coaches or graduate assistants or analysts showing the different groups what the other team did so it's very you know it they could do it in the pros they could do it in high school and finally they're letting you do it in college which is very effective I think I think it definitely saw the Georgia adjust on the Fly last week it was beautiful that offense really started hitting we just stun it out of that play Jona Jonah J is in Joseph Jonah ajier number 99 fivar defensive end it's a good it's a good game for the new D lineman to get a chance to get their feet wet because it's not like going against a veteran offensive line so it gives him a chance to get some reps give us some depth next week for Kentucky wow small Mond coming through that was that he could through a gap or B it's not going to get much time to throw the ball like that man you got to go that's poor coaching I mean I'm not going to lie about it you can't take a loss like this especially on second and three so smile comes through the a gap Christian Miller gets the B Gap wi and they just meeting the Back Field yeah this is one of those games I just hope the clock keeps going and get out it nobody get hurt I can see them going to 10-minute quarters in the second half uhoh make the tackle might have made it no a yard short pitiful he did die I'll give him credit for it he tried they're going to try to hard count here yeah but un like Clemson they'll probably go a little bit faster Clemson playing at App State tonight people on Davos but oh smile Mund almost took out the uh umpire we're playing man coverage there and they just break it but he's going toire elbow going to have to call another timeout Y no time out there he's calling timeout like you said well they did not uh they did it worse than Clemson did he's trying to get say I'm sorry coach you know as as tough as it is on the players it's tough on a opposing coach when you're out man like this because you're yeah thinking about what if say Hey you know normally we would probably go for this but playing number one team in the nation and you give ball to them here you pretty much saying it's another score but they haven't stopped them yet so this might be the closest they get to getting the first down so you got to look at what you are you here to try to get a moral Victory or you just trying to still win the game hey the game still on the table at 14 nothing but obviously yeah going to be um we saw that with uh couple teams that we've we watched over the years come in here when like you have the ball on the seven yard line and you and you're down 45 to nothing you kick a field goal I mean yeah go for the touchdown I'm with you there uh right now through two drives George is averaging 11.3 yards a play yeah so they're going to try to draw us off sides I mean it's no question here Jaz is loaded up went to the edge Dan Jackson didn't quite get there good call yeah he can scoot that's got uh janal Aguero got kind of tackled a little bit got Harrison there at the field Corner alternating with Humphries another thing I'd do game like this throw it down there deep back RAR back and roll it worst case you know you get a little pass interference call pretty solid run they're having success when they don't shoot themselves in the foot did they just put their quarterback out a receiver because they definitely had someone over there that wasn't wearing gloves they got a bunch of different uh options that way good to see Christian Miller get a sack happy for him second and five good job wow T Mingo Daw you called nice you said earlier coach is good to see 93 out there wow got some skill he uses his hands well and gets off blocks did so good and going to take him out yeah I tell you last night was the Georgia infomercial in Brazil with all the Georgia players on the Eagles and the Packers yeah that was good Bullard 11 tackles and he killed him man you see that hit he put on AJ Brown yeah I mean don't he hurt yeah he definitely that guy was laying on the ground that was Brad He's a he's a hitter third and six 48 yard line that's a a fumbled railen Wilson coming up that uh other thing that happens here is Ste the crap out of that helps your rushing defense here I mean you just can't do these exotic plays you got to one two three and throw it yeah of course the guy's right on them but yeah they that Center had Center guard combo had two inside linebackers on either side of the center C like their hair is on fire it was it was shortlived Henry says Jonah Jay does not look 17 years old he does not wait till you uh see number 33 quintavius Johnson he got a chance here again I keep thinking he was going to he's going to um fair catch these but he's Fearless well let's run some kind of jet sweep or counter Georgia does not have a rushing attempt yet what do you call that play to etn ran well it was called it just got the ball straight north south not don't [ __ ] foot around just playing quick free play I don't know yeah I'd push Bell out of bounds too if I was in coverage just might be two flags here because the ref lost his hat too what do you do in practice coach to prepare a quarterback for an offside you have a shot yeah I mean just say stay with it you know you know who your best chance is to go and know what the score is in the game too I mean if you're having a lot of success then go ahead and go deep but otherwise take a easy throw and make 15 or 20 he got Aran up there Post Corner aran's gonna block for Nate Frasier who got three yards and that'll do it for the first quarter only 14 points damn it Mike boobo um shall we take 15 seconds for our friends at Yingling yeah and then for a couple of gas and our gas at halftime when we were kicking people's ass would go in equipment room and get some hot dogs and so he was yelling and you know you don't expect when it's 49 to nothing to be asked to do something you know so where's Tim where's Tim where's uh oh where's Tim and so they went running and said hey Switzer wants to see you he said that's [ __ ] he don't want to see me he said he seriously so he goes what you need coach get up my office and get the get that uh record book we got a chance to break the record for rushing so we come back and you know we giv a pep talk to the team usually to go out the second half it was like we're getting ready to play Nebraska he said I'm just telling you second Team guys if you get a penalty I'm going to run your ass into submission you know you know it's like we gonna go for this record I mean and we ended up getting like 800 and something I mean look at that's wrong it was Unreal but it was it was one of the best pep talks I ever heard but he just to break the record but we had this play where Charles Thompson ran around the end and we had a guy that was off sides and uh Charles came over and he was tired makes the call Bobby from um over there in East St Louis and he says red red which means Brad you snap it to the punter yeah well Brad gets mixed up and they got the worst possible alignment you could ever had there's no way you would ever fake a pun into that I mean there is no way our team's blocking the fake I mean the protection covering we didn't block anything like we were going to kick down pull the guard out and kick the end out so but bobby gets the snap back to him he's back there what's he got to do so he goes on and runs well it was such a stupid looking play that the defense didn't have any idea that we were snapping it to him he goes 80 yards for a touchdown and we're up there in the Press Box just mesmerized he missed it no man we had a little well anyhow so after the game the we're they're talking to our head coach about man I took a lot of lot of guts to call that fake there at the end of the game and he said yeah we thought they had something we could take advantage of Li sack of crap but it was one of the most ridiculous plays that turned into something just because Brad got red and green mixed up but uh I thought the guy upstairs was going to have a heart attack he oh yeah you know he just thinking okay he's going to snap it we watch the cover and what are you doing here goes Bobby 80 yards then the next week we had a uh next year we had this fake against Nebraska where uh actually I saw it in a high school game up in U Missouri on a Thursday night and we put it in the next week you put two Wings on one side instead of wing on the other and the other guy act like he too many guys in the game and he starts running off the field he tells him get off and the guy runs off and then right when they snap it he turns up and you snap oh then he turns and he runs down the sideline he's been in motion the whole way yeah you got a guy down there with a towel that he looks at when he take the towel down he sees it and he turns up turns up and goes yeah well we didn't take into account that the backup quarterback's arm would be cold because it's cold as heck and the guy was so open it was ridiculous and he underthrew him about 15 yards and he had to come back and dive and catch it but we made the first down but it was such a deceptive looking play and it was good but would it would have been great like could have hit him in the stride he' been gone to the races yeah this is going to wrap quickly so a couple things one um about 10 minutes after the show I'm filling in for Paul Mahia on the postgame over reaction show so if you want to talk and they hadn't beaten we hadn't beaten Kansas in so long they left the scoreboard on for two weeks with the score but that was one of the best coaching jobs that I was ever involved with they had lost 20 straight games o when we got out there and we won four in the conference that year and it was just very rewarding but to see Roosevelt run that fake and uh just you know dog everybody dogged him love it and uh I just think how old I am start remembering this stuff I mean that was 1978 hey coach what did you say about Cal's quarterback stronger than and Mary's breath 17 of 19 19 why watch
