UGASports LIVE — Dawgs are off and running

[Music] hello everybody sorry for the late start I've got a cold yeah uh my name is R bullly I joined by Jim Don and the former Georgia Bulldogs head coach Hall of Famer and I say that every week and I want folks to realize that this man is in the College Football Hall of Fame that's a big deal he's one of the best ever to do it former ESPN commentator and a DieHard Bulldog who does a watchalong show that you you know gives you tons of insight and we appreciate the coach make takes time to be on our show every Tuesday also we have Dane Young so coach let me get your overall thoughts on the uh Georgia game this Clemson that this was not the blowout I was expecting at halftime I'm going around saying I told everybody I told you gonna be close I told you and then the game's over and everybody's like you're a [ __ ] so yeah I didn't realize that was going to happen I didn't real going to be quite that such a blowout but uh let me get your overall thoughts on Georgia versus Clemson and maybe what that pertains for the rest of the year yeah he couldn't ask for a better start from the standpoint of having a little adversity and then o overcoming it uh by that I mean the injury factors that we had and the uh slow start in certain areas but I just like to point out this one thing here uh and and really give a little love to Glenn Schuman and the defensive coaches first you know last year we lost three guys to the NFL draft from the secondary uh three guys are prominent players the star ta Smith good corner and Kamari ler and an outstanding safety and Javon Bullard and then uh Saturday we basically started a game with only one guy that you could consider a starter from last year Malachi Starks and he was playing a different position Dan Jackson has played you know some some a lot of snaps and ever has played but not you know considered to be a starter so essentially we played the Clemson Tigers with an almost entirely new secondary Saturday I'm talking about both Corners the star who had never played there before of course he could play quarterback he could play a lot of things M like a freshman safety never played in Balden and Jackson who's been a really good player for us as a special teams player so when you look at that and you look at the total dominance that we had on defense it's just remarkable performance to just squelch them like we did everybody was pretty much in position I mean they made a couple plays and their nerves hurt them in the first half I'm talking about Clemson but we were in position we tackled really well and we just basically put the hammer down uh you saw so many athletes out there they can run hit and uh you know really didn't play a lot of snaps when you look at the snap count that how many guys played for us and how many things they did Kirby mentioned you know practice 98% more snaps in practice than ever do in games so defensively just a a really good job of preparation of game planning of executing it of uh the actual uh part of the the communication during the game everybody seemed to be where they're supposed to be mus champ wasn't there you know he's watching Vanderbilt had a remarkable victory over a ranked team there uh against a very good Jia Tech Team but that transfer Pavia from New Mexico State who torched Auburn last year they're running triple option which you know I love a chance to really really do a lot of things at Vanderbilt maybe not that they're going to be a real serious Contender but they're at least competitive but getting back to that uh the communication with two new defens the coaches in the secondary all those things that that us as fans we as fans take for granted it's Georgia it's just going to happen I mean it happened and it happened with really on a big stage offensively uh you know when you look at the offense two of the guys that scored touchdowns weren't even in the program last year uh number eight Kobe young transferred from Miami and 16 Landon Humphrey both called touchdown passes and you know anyway look at it that's pretty prominent the two running backs weren't playing last year for Georgia uh Robinson was hurt and Frasier was uh you know playing in high school and of course cash came in and played we know what he can do and he could probably play even more but still that's a Difference Maker as far as you just can't go out there and expect it and I knew that Robinson was going to be a little bit you know when Nick chub came back it just takes a little while from an injury like that because you worry about your knee and you saw that was zir white the more and more he played the more he got better so let's don't be too hard on on Branson right now we'll see a demonstrative move by him this guy's a power back be patient with him and he'll do a lot and then the fact we play with a center that really hasn't played at all so you look down the middle of that team your your backs your Center and it's not anything but kudos for me that we could look that good with that much new people playing fors we talked about our kicking game our kicking game is out of sight I mean any way you look at it with the way our guy can punt the way our guy can do field goals we weren't sure how he's going to do kickoff wise but couple times I mean he almost hit the ceiling with it and he you know kick it out of the endzone I think the last one Kirby just wanted to see if we could cover so he kicked it short just to practice it uh tremendous job by uh by Evans just returning kicks decision making running up and keeping the ball from bouncing just things as a coach that you'd love to see offensively you know we did start a little slow but here's the thing as a play caller which I always felt like I was a lot better play caller when we're making first downs and you're not worried about okay we're g to take a shot but if it doesn't work we can still make it these other two when you're struggling a little bit it's hard to do that you people say why don't you throw de we we were not making the plays necessary to get the Rhythm and we were close to it a couple times but you know had a couple penalties things like that but I thought the adjustments we made as far as just not so much the plays we call but just getting the ball underneath running the getting the ball to our Playmakers and getting that Rhythm that you like I used to kid about Tom o boy he's a great play caller and all that yeah but when the bands playing against Oklahoma he pretty average because those first downs like like he does against Kansas and Kanas State he's a great coach but I'm just telling you you got to get that Rhythm as a play caller and I felt like we had that in the second half and it was pretty obvious that Beck was really much in control and doing a great job of you saw him going to the line checking off getting the best play Let's just point out this one thing Clemson defensively has a front seven that we're probably not going to see much better than that their perimet back end's not that great but you're just not going Walts up and down the field on a team like that that's that's just the way it is uh but we did pretty well the second half their offense uh I really don't know what they're trying to do on offense it just looks like a hodge podge uh Clemson and uh really when you look at the fact that they haven't scored a touchdown on us in a decade 2014 was the last time they scored a touchdown and uh of course we've only played them two times but eight quarters you'd think that something would happen where they could score so uh maybe I'm bashing them a little bit but I was I was very disappointed not I was happy for us but I I I thought you know they played pretty scared and they looked like they were you know their Own Worst Enemy early they had some good ideas but uh once we got that baby rolling the other day it was uh it was pretty awesome to see and pretty much sent a statement around the country hey you can talk about Georgia all you want about the people people we lost and who's going to be this and who's that but if you want to get somebody's attention I would say couple things happened this weekend that got people's attention number one ug pretty much on top again number two Florida State are you kidding me seriously man U they gotta be they gotta be really concerned about the only person that's happier about Florida State situation than than uh anybody's probably Billy Napier because it takes a little heat off Billy because they're so bad at Florida maybe people will be bitching about Florida State but let me just tell you that was a ass kicking last night and my old old line coach Doug morone is up there at Boston College now and you could see the symbolism of the way he coaches that old line they really get after it they had a tremendous plan of course that kid from W Cross Georgia is the quarterback I mean we tried to get him as a running back and uh he wanted to play quarterback but well he was spectacular last night and then uh we don't want to talk about that too much but just the idea those two things really stuck out to me as far as how good Georgia is and how unbelievably average Florida state is when everybody said they were a playoff team and then they people are still saying they could still make the playoffs I mean what are you smoking man they not gonna make the playoffs they may not make a bowl game they got they got some serious issues there and uh DJ unal you know it's not all him but those receivers can't separate their o line can't block that great their dline supposed to have all these players but uh I just think it's uh really good to see college football rolling again and uh we'll talk about any questions they want to have but I did want to point out about Schuman Kirby the defensive staff working around the injury factor with Aguero and then during the game brinon and and Michael going down but uh pretty obvious we got some talent to to your point coach you mentioned the two transfers and everybody's made a big deal on of Clemson not taking transfers I don't even get into all that but you're London hrey scored enough points to beat them Kobe young scored enough points to beat them big uh influx of talent there like you said you pointed all the guys that they don't have from last year and some of the guys got injured the new faces that are making a impact and my whole take on when someone said what is your thought of the game I'm like do you see how many different guys stepped up nine different guys caught passes tackles were made in the open field by you know so many different players when Georgia won the title in 21 when won it in 22 there were a multitude of different guys who stepped up when they were needed you know Chris Smith with a pick six against Clemson to win that game William P with a knockdown pass on third down just I don't want to call them role players because that sounds almost derogatory but you know that you have your Superstars and you're replacing Brock Bowers you're replacing lad makoni you're replacing replacing Marcus rosemy Jack Saint like you said all the guys on the defensive end and for Malachi to step up and uh say look I'll play Star even though Kirby said yesterday he's not reped that that's not some you know they do a lot of cross training he's not cross trained at Star but Kirby says look he's our um he's our best player like five different positions so he gets in there and does his thing and when people talk about the first half verus the second half I'm thinking about okay these role players stepped up in the second half but they also made plays in the first half to keep Clemson off the board they dropped a couple passes but Clemson was tackling great Georgia couldn't quite get and you said it on the show we need somebody to break a tackle once that first tackle was broken and I think it was by Nate Frasier everything changed everything changed and Georgia started to be able to hit and like you said first downs incourage you to do more you feel like you can get it and Georgia started to roll and I'm thinking okay they shook the dust off the rust off in the first half they did everything to stay close I mean to not let Clemson hit on anything big and then just took him to the Woodshed after it by all these different players popping up and do it they lost and lucky you know Dylan Bell running the ball for 26 yards and making big catches even though he cramped up it just felt like that Oregon game the score was a little bit different but and it wasn't start to finish but that second half I'm like damn this this looks like a championship team that was just with you can't point to the three guys when we finished the uh interviews after the game My gu's like well I got 37 different story ideas to write about all our questions today were about all these different players that stepped up and I just got that Championship Vibe I'm not trying to read too much into it coach but you're you're the coach you've coached championship teams I just think we got to be careful about giving us The Red Badge of Courage yet I mean we got a lot of room to improve and we're gonna play against better teams than this I mean true the Clemson Mystique is there but uh you know they're not a very good offensive team uh at Kentucky will be tougher and all of them are gonna be but it's just it's just everything's so scrutinized now you know just like the political issue or whatever might be you know everybody's got an opinion on it which is good but uh we've got a high standard here and we're trying to meet it but it's just a case of uh I felt like considering the adversity we had going into the game with without some of these guys and you had etm let me just tell you uh this next game I hope Aguero is gonna play but you know and I hope e but in my mind they're they're two of our top 10 players uh on our team and we played Without both of them so uh we'll see how this rolls but uh it might be without Michel with the ankle for a week or two you don't know well I mean we can keep adding all that Michael moud all those guys you're right but uh the biggest thing is let's answer the question this damn game's history let's get going we're not g to let you off the hook that quick we got a bunch of people to ask about that but I do want to get your thoughts real quick on Tennessee Tech I mean it's uh you get all the hype for the Clemson game and then you got an 0 And1 Tennessee Tech coming in here that played Middle Tennessee State pretty good but uh what's what's the goal this weekend I asked Kirby you know can you name one area that you want to see Improvement in in years past he's actually answered that question from game one to game two he's like we really gotta work on X we gotta work on Y and it kind of gives us an idea of what to look for in the next game and Kirby just kind of shook his head and goes everything and I know it's a pat answer but he sounded sincere and like we got a lot to fix yeah I think when you look at it we do have I mean we got to get more consistent in our offensive line we got separate better with the receivers we got to break some tackles with the running backs we got to uh you know play the ball in the air defensively which we were close but uh probably get more pass rush but they run play action but as far as uh this Tennessee Tech uh Bobby Wilder's the head coach and he was an Old Dominion when I was doing some games back in the day and had a couple of his games very good coach knows uh you know how to get his team ready and utilize what they got uh Tennessee Tech uh played really V against the Middle Tennessee pretty good I mean came back on them the rain delay or I mean excuse me the lightning delay probably affected both teams because it took a long time I was trying to watch some of it but you know I couldn't keep my ey on it when it kept delaying like that so but they they like to take which you know we saw it last year when we played in the first game against uh that Tennessee team uh they they take a lot of chances on defense so they probably gonna get some lost yardage plays on us particularly in the running game but they're GNA they're gonna have a hard time covering us and then offensively you just got to see if they're going to try to milk the clock and use use 24 sec I mean use it the clock just that we're not playing basketball 24 but uh you know if they if they'll just if they'll just uh you know utilize the clock and you can run run the clock pretty well now without it stopping if you make a couple first downs but uh and and what our challenge is this week which Kirby always talks our players back about it you owe the the other guys to do all you can to get ahead and let them play I mean we need to get some of these other guys in get some playing experience because we got as Dane said we got to Road game coming up up there in Kentucky and you know uh next week 7:30 kickoff so uh uh but I'm sure they'll spend a lot of time this week going against each other just to continue to improve and work on the things that uh are necessary to get you ready for the whole season I'm excited about some of the uh freshman that we hope to see in this game Georgia played 12 or 13 different freshman in the Clemson game I know that coach CP put about a tweet earlier today talking about trying to go against that negative recruiting narrative that you know why would you go to Georgia you can't play for you know one two three years because they got so many good players and he's like hey look at all the guys that played in this game against a ranked team on a neutral site we played everybody right and I applaud him being having the foresight a couple years ago with this transfer portal to start working our threes in practice where it used to be ones and twos would go and then threes were over there Scout team but now ones and two stay on the side and they let three get seven or eight plays in every drill where you can coach them up and see how they're progressing but also give these kids a chance to learn the system and you can put them in there more effectively and then at the end of the year you you they can't say well I didn't even get a chance I didn't get to play but he's playing these guys and he's looking at that from the standpoint of okay you got to play some but now you're going to get to play even more because uh we're losing this guy to the pros or whatever it might be so very smart by Kirby yeah and as we point out you know there injuries happen they happen every game every time so you got to be ready and that's you know Ohio State talks about the guys that they had get banged up Alabama talks about the guys they had banged up and you're like well Georgia was without a bunch of players too and they were deeper than you with more experienced guys that knew how to step in so it's a brilliant system and games like the Tennessee dech game is where you see that development I do want to point out something else on the coaching side um I'm not trying to give Kirby you know all these flowers but when you mentioned the you know smart move I thought it was very interesting that after the game he said you know we had to get very or we had to get uncomfortable with using Jaylen Walker's skill set because he is that kind of in between guy he's that hybrid linebacker and I thought the plan that Georgia had for him bod really well for the rest of the season especially with Michael being beat up and the stuff they did with smile mundon I thought was brilliant but the we've you've been talking about Jaylen Walker forever you talked about him on the watch long show I've been mentioning him since he committed but I hated to be the uh the wet blanket but I just kept waiting for him to have his Breakout game I thought this past Saturday it was a Jaylen Walker show yeah I mean he does have a remarkable strength to go with his quickness and uh you know his speed really you know he's been a great cover guy on kicks and he's made lot of plays rushing a passer and things like that but uh skill set wise you know very similar to Quay walker uh just looks a lot like him on the hoof and uh good part of your deal as a coach is to put your your players in a position where they could be successful from a standpoint of how you utilize them I mean you don't need to take a a tight end and split him out if he can't really get off press coverage or you don't need to take a a wide receiver and bring him in tight if he can't block at the point of attack so the same thing's true with u with Walker I mean uh he's got three linebackers there and railan and CJ and small I mean those guy you can't play but two them at a time but we started playing some packages where we had you know several linebackers plus this uh situation with Walker and Michel on the edges so uh get your best players on the field use they don't necessarily have to be an outside linebacker inside lineer just have to be 11 people and see what we can do to uh get after the defense uh as a defense get after the offense but I did say this last week I feel like our defense is really gonna be better about from just from this standpoint that they're gonna be playing from ahead most of the time I just feel like our offense is going to generate a lot of points plus a lot of field position where the other team's backed up not only because we can move the ball but our punter will keep you backed up and your play calling shrinks when you're backed up because you know you make one or two mistakes against Georgia and they're such a good scoring defense that if you give them a defensive touchdown or defensive field position for the offense it really shrinks your chances of winning and most teams they're trying to find how can we win or how can can we make Georgia lose so uh I just think the fact that we can use these packages by that I mean not just our base stuff but get into that nickel and Diamond that jaguar look where we got two fast guys on the edge is going to put a lot of heat on the defense from the defensive perspective on the opposing offense and as a quarterback attacking that and you go to the line you're thinking here come these two heat seeking missiles off the edge if it's small and and Walker or Michel or whoever might be you know I'm G have to get set and make a decision but I got to be careful because the defensive backs they bre on the ball so a lot of thinking going on there you're right we saw when Georgia had a I think it was when they went have two scores you could just feel the change of the defense the uh they started sending them more knowing that hey they got a throw to catch up and we we we got them over a barrel you mentioned getting your best 11 on the field and I want to mention our getting our best uh folks on the field and that's our friends over at eurai we had eurai during the halftime of the Georgia Clemson game because they're good sponsor good friends and a great company to support they support the Georgia Bulldogs you should support team that's what the team had and they got really rolling no they didn't hey there you go so they got it uh they have a new one the the Brick Oven cheesecake Pizza that I've not had before cheese steak that is different from Cheesecake cheese steak Pizza I thought I said that but cheese steak Pizza that looks good uh they have it in chicken or beef I'm have to get a and the ultimate Ranch Wings we didn't get those we had the lemon pepper wings and I will tell you that uh lemon pepper that uh it's an Atlanta thing I get it they are phenomenal I would recommend getting them from our friends at the uh at europei there's a ton of locations around the state around the southeast try it out you'll be happy to do it and now they got the nonas pumpkin pie gelato so it's about that time of the year I walked out it's supposed to be like 83 as a high this coming Saturday for Tennessee Tech and no rain yet in the forecast but it's supposed to be a picture perfect day two o'clock inside renovated Sanford Stadium uh it's that today was that first uh kind of dry air and it made me you know like I thought to myself here comes the uh pumpkin pie spice lattes and well they got pumpkin pie Gelato at Europe Pi so check them out also want to mention our friends at the um my perfect franchise. net you want to open up your own company if you want to be in charge so that you can take Saturdays off and you don't have to worry about anybody calling you because you're the boss reach out to my perfect franchise. net let them get into it Andy was in the Rat Race about 10 years ago he decided to get out of it he said look you know this is this is just too much um he started a h franchise was called Synergy Home Care uh then he took on the big red dumpster company then he took on big red uh big red Reed heads it's a port potty company you know and then of course you did the big red gutter company these are all companies that he started and he can put you into the same stuff it's a lot of it is you you can have a brick and mortar or you can have a rental there's so many different ways to go about this where you'd be the boss and Andy Ludi and my perfect franchise. net can take care of that for you coach I had a couple observations I wanted to run by you one I was surprised that dbos won the toss and took the ball typically most teams defer correct yeah I mean I think it's a psychological move to let make Georgia think hey you got a great defense we're going to come after you right off the bat which sometimes uh things like that get the other team thinking about it but uh I'm not sure why he made that move you know from my perspective I always like to take the ball if I could but it just depends on how you feel he might have felt like that you know jump out on Georgia and maybe get a get an early score but it was kind of surprising yeah I mean it's six nothing at half if Clemson has the ball coming out I mean the whole half could be different Georgia could go down and score and you get in a hole I understand uh the other things to to me you pointed out quickly on the watchalong show and then Kirby Smart even after talked about how with no jonel Aguero how many positions that required to change an update during that week of practice why did Clemson not try to do more vertical over the top even 50/50 balls just to get a pass interference call or something to to try to exploit some of that knowing that's luckely going to be where Georgia feels less comfortable yeah I mean you think they would do that but maybe they're worried about protecting and and and getting the Lost yardage play too because um it's pretty obvious their offensive line was a little confused you saw those two guys pulling and running into each other and you just a negative play you know they had one on the goal line that really hurt them when they got the ball in the second half and moved it down there and you know lost shortage but uh I think you got to take some shots on Georgia I mean we we we play it close to the vest and we're going to get some interference or defensive holding as close as we are to them but uh from my perspective uh you got to take more shots they waved one off didn't they yeah they orig threw a flag and then they got Ellis Robinson for one so yeah you're that's that's a good call I think uh for the most part FAL did a pretty good job Georgia had more penalties I think it was seven to three Georgia had seven and Clemson had three so that's something Kirby's going want to work on is seven penalties seven it was a phantom holding call though yeah uh and the final thing was and this is more of an observation than a question but nationally this game became the referendum on the transfer portal how Dabo uses it versus how Kirby uses it which I love how Kirby was quick to say we don't just go into the portal just trying to grab everybody like this is a very specific thing mostly when players choose to leave Georgia you have to backfill that uh it's very rare that Georgia just goes to the portal to get a a singular talent I think Caleb DS would have been that way but to me coach not enough is getting made of yeah Georgia has all the five-star recruits and and fourstar recruits and they get some portal guys but Dan Jackson's making plays in this game Cass Jones is a weapon on offense yes I am going to get G Jones in here that development of Contin walk- on guys but you saw it with lad mcon is a three star guy Georgia is winning at super high levels with guys that a lot of other people did not want yeah I mean we're not concerned about the other people and and you make that point I mean he Kirby is a tremendous evaluator and he knows based on what his programs about how he's got to feel for this guy because he's worked him out like he did all these guys but I think in the case of uh of the portal itself if you just look at the results here uh and and everybody speculates well who are they going to take I mean who would ever thought we would take a tight end this year in the portal and he brings you rosic in here who didn't really get any balls thrown to him but did a pretty good job blocking but uh he gave you was Spurling going down gave you a more experienced guy to augment Delp and lucky and let these other two guys come along and both of them got tremendous young talent and you know Rell and and hinry they're going to both be players so and then you know uh we lose a deep Snapper and we bring in a guy from UCLA to be the Deep Snapper and this guy's not only good Snapper he can cover uh he does a lot of things but and he's not even on scholarship so he wants to play in a winning situation and enough talked about that but just the Kirby SM the uh I won't call him general manager because that would be the same thing as you but the person SM uh is very good at knowing what the needs are and you you tell a guy look you know we'd like to give you this opportunity to play on a championship level program get you ready for the pros get you ready for uh tremendous competition and play among some really good players and that's what you look at osic jumped on that so did Humphrey so did uh Kobe young we needed a we needed a guy inside the 20 uh to the Red Zone type guy and Kobe if he doesn't catch another pass this year that was huge when he did it perfect delivery by uh by Beck on that you know we used to call the fade and the fade out back in the old days before some of these things and and the Fade Out was more Drive the guy to the pylon back pylon and then come back hard inside I mean outside to the to the first pylon and get the ball low in outside now the tendency is start towards the pylon and then drift away from that and and catch the ball and it gives you more uh Vision to the ball with your head and eyes as compared to have to snap your head around and find it and it's a lot easier to catch the ball when you know that exactly you see it the whole way as compared to turning around then having to find it and and low ball is always tougher to catch too so uh really good throw by Beck our team works so much on those throws goal line defending it with the secondary and the uh receivers running it and they do tremendous amount of reps when the team is working on say punt return or kickoff return and all that all the receivers that aren't on special teams will get down there and they'll get 15 or 20 throws and defend you know the against the people and they're really good at it you just think about some of the plays that have made is successful go back to Mitchell in the championship game against Ohio State when he ran that little zigzag right goal line broke back out I saw him work on that so many times with Coach with the coaching staff and coach monin and Coach Mony and tell him to stay low out of his break and all that and U that's that's part of to me the coaching that they get here and other people do that too there's no question about it but I'm answering this from a long perspective uh we've been in the top three in recruiting five years in a row maybe maybe longer than that we took nine guys plus two walkon in the portal this year that's a lot of players that's a lot of players to augment your team so uh pretty good job you mentioned Ben urisk he's on my list coach because he's from Stanford he's supposed to be smarter than that he had a penalty and then he had a low ball but I'm just teasing about him but that's like I thought your joke about hey you supposed to know better kind of cracked me up on the watch long but I do want to mention loss and lucky uh I thought loss and lucky just really showed what he's potential of you told us that before he got hurt you're like hey I in the stock market and you wanna get a Futures bet this guy right here is a future I mean and his brother's GNA be one too uh yeah his brother's a good player too coming up and hopefully we're gonna get him but you know Lawson had that tight RPP surgery last year and put him behind but uh you can just see he looked like an analou running down the field and he just loves Georgia and he loves to compete and U and you know you got to be careful about giving him too much uh Kudos here because I know they they they want to get consistency but he's just like a young buck that's getting ready just you know go out there and kick some ass I mean just what a player and they they you know fantastic player I mean you know that there's gonna be a fall off without Brock powers out there but Georgia in 12 person now yeah run it it looks great well we got we got OS as a blocker too and then we go 13 where you get three of them in there you got to do stuff like that and show a little bit of flexibility when your back situation is uh you know not quite as fluid as it needs to be uh but it's it's going be it's going to be pretty dang salty with the ATM back there I mean he he can make so many cuts and he can read the blocks and uh you know Fraser's coming along that's for sure and and Robinson we said but let me just tell you uh play act play action is not gonna be fair well that does bring up a question Nate Frasier was the I don't say the story of the game but he is we did a story of him about him after the game because I mean hey leading rusher the guy's just a sparkk plug he goes crazy uh Kirby SM was asked about him yesterday Lawson lucky was asked about him Lawson says look he he runs like his hair is on fire that's the way he came in here Kirby Smart says look he does all these cutbacks and I tell him hey that works great in practice but in a game you're gonna get lit up but then you know he takes it 50 yards across the field and we'd heard so many good things about him every I say everyone but a lot of people like wow that the future's in great hands with uh Nate Frasier and Kirby was quick to say look he's got problems he you know but he's also don't forget about chony Bowens don't forget about Nate Phillips what about Trevor t no one's seen him yet in a Georgia uniform but a lot of people are penciling in Nate Fraser is the guy and I'm like wait a minute Trevor ITN is your rb1 so be well on that about that kind of play action being unfair dependency always I mean ever since I've been playing or coaching the the new guy is the one that everybody talks about before and you you don't really start mentioning I mean probably the most spectacular play in the whole game was G Jones running down the boundary and stand in bounds I mean you just can't coach that ability to you know keep your Balan like that and Frasier you know zigzag stuff is great but uh you know Dell told me coach McGee when he was going after this guy said you know he brings a skill set that you know very similar to cook and Swift and uh can catch the ball and all that he had a tough catch where he dropped it but uh I I think he's going to be a prominent part of our team no question about it but etn U from my standpoint over the years I say it very very seldom but you talk about my mouth watering EPN makes my mouth water it makes my mouth feel like I've got so much Sal lava in it like G have to spit I mean this guy you see you saw what he did Florida you saw with a very average line but you get him behind truss and and on the one side and then U green on the other side and he can Bounce It Outside he can run the counter uh just a he's really good I mean and and and don't sleep on Robinson I just feel like everybody remember how he looked as a freshman and you think about the fact that his knee was totally obliterated talking about you can be at home and your knee hurts a little bit and oh I got some arthritis and all that this guy had his whole knee completely restructured and he still is playing college football he he will be if he can just be 80% maybe 85 of what he used to be with that he'll be big because he's so powerful and easily the strongest back in America there's not probably nobody in the wait room even in his area code so uh I I just want everybody to not quite get down on him because of Saturday but uh our running game is going to be really good and because of that a passing game G be even better uh I feel good about where we're going there I do think it's a an indicator on team identity here we know Kirby Smart is going to be a bit more conservative in the sense of don't turn the ball over because the defense is good enough that it can it can hang on there and against most teams in the country and Carson back coach I thought actually had the stats may not bear it out one of his best games at Georgia because I just didn't see the ball in danger maybe once you could say a little bit on the one toward the sideline but overall I thought it was fantastic so I could definitely see this being a team that is defense run the ball and then the quarterback can make all the throws when he has to and add that to the kicking game too yeah but you know one of the things you talk about as a coach and this is not to bust you as a general manager we we never talk about don't we say protect the ball we say don't turn it over don't do I mean hey you got to you got to think about if you're going to have a competitive situation you're going to have to look at the situation as far as checks and balances protect the ball but if you're thinking don't fumble don't do this don't do that then then it's just too much of a negative so you got to just say protect the ball work on your release all that so I think it uh we continue to be one of the least turnover teams in the history of football I mean we very rarely turn the ball over so I hope we can keep that part going for us but you playing a game like we're going to play Saturday uh the other team's gonna take a lot of chances they might get some Blindside hits uh we could see some turnovers but uh it's just uh always as much as you like to project hey we're gonna put these guys in we're GNA do this it never works out like that you're right and they get you know look at Idaho the other day who would have thought that Idaho could play against uh Oregon like they did and I watch the film I mean theyve ran some they've ran some plays that that coach went out in the parking lot before the game and grow grew them up I mean some unbelievable trick plays that two of them worked and uh also same thing with akan playing against Ohio State you know you're against the wall do some things I mean they put a guy in motion seriously they put a guy in motion like we see on the rocket or Jet Sweep pitched in the ball he went a couple steps and then reversed his field and went back the other way and threw the ball to the tail back in the flat and uh I thought it a heck of a play I mean I'd run that I mean yeah I know you love that Ward would be great with that because other Corner was running across with him and all of a sudden the guy revers his field starts back the other way and dumps it in the flat so uh Joe um the the coach from akan who I think's a good coach Morehead he's always got some of those plays like that and it's always good to see some of these things that are happening in college football and you got to keep up with it yeah that that'll be Kirby's um challenge this year this week is to get his guys up for it I think they'll be up for Tennessee but it's easy I mean for Kentucky but it's easy to be like okay well all the focus was on Clemson now they're done and uh Tennessee Tech's coming in here but if anybody keeps his guys on the front burner it's Kirby Smart then that's U and again it's tough to keep him up for a game that should win but to your point I mean Boston College no one gave them much of a chance and or no one gave Vandy much of a chance and the parody college football is there Derby does do which I think from a fan perspective is you got a coach here who loves Georgia and wants to you know do his best and but he talks to the team about heyy you owe these fans to give them your best they only get to see you play some of these people don't get to go on the road you need to go out and stretch your stuff whoever we're playing against you owe them that here in this stadium and they take a lot of pride in walking into that dog walk and going into Sanford Stadium and I don't know how many games we won the road South Carolina's the last one we lost in it but and plus the other fact that I didn't even think about but I saw it on the national stat we're approaching Oklahoma's you know Oklahoma won 47 straight games but they also won uh 45 straight uh regular season games back in 1956 57 we're approaching that we've won 40 straight regular season games now and we got a chance breaking that record that that's just mind-blowing I'm it's insane you said Trevor ATN major mouthwatering in for the Tennessee Tech game that will make your mouth water if you go by Academia Brewing Company on your way to the game if you're uh or on your way after the game you can get their game day to go specials 25 wings and a six pack of canned beer for 35 bucks 50 wings and a 12 pack of canned beer for $70 or 100 wings and a 24 pack of their canned beer for $135 so if you are in the uh area you come to Athens even if you're not going to the game if you're just going to a tailgate go pick up you know a case of beer and 100 Wings 135 bucks it's done you don't have to worry about it again the folks out Academia Brewing Company these are not the some crappy wings taken out of a freezer they do a great job and everything every any food item I've ever had there has been on the top of the charts I mean they don't they don't phone it in very Kirby asking the way they approach their food and their beer they win a ton of awards so check them out when you get a chance you'll be very very happy that you did so and if on that side of town you're only a Stones throw away from Athens Ford you can jump out to Athens Ford and get u a new new or pre-owned vehicle I went on their search function and was looking under their um used and certified used cars in Athens and uh you know there's different filters you can use like hey I want this this company or this brand or this mileage or you know four doors Two Doors whatever I saw one that said under $25,000 I'm like how many cars do they really have under $25,000 they have 20 there are 20 used vehicles with a low mileage for uh $20,000 it it's insane so and again I'm looking at one two three four five six uh seven eight nine 10 I stop there they would come with their lifetime power train warranty like okay so car under 125 Grand with lifetime power training warranty from our friends at Athens Ford get out and see them you'll be very happy that you did so um I'm just impressed by that that blows my mind we can get the questions from ugasports.com and Rody I can start with one for you because Big Al ug got in there and won know who won the score contest the pick them uh on the dog vents so I think uh maybe that's a little pandering to see yeah like give give me my reward was it me was it me it may be uh I called Patrick Garbin uh before the show and asked him if he would go through that and find out who the winner was I was not expecting 750 predictions normally we get about three to 400 everybody waited on this game and I looked at it and I'm just like oh my God it's like the guy that does the film breakdowns like oh my God I'm nervous so so they say better never rest right yeah so hey thank and again this part of the uh prerogative of being the boss is you call somebody else and do something that is going to be hard and take a long time I'm like hey Patrick Patrick I need a favor so yeah Patrick's doing it we should have an answer here uh very shortly he'll text me the answer because a lot of people a lot of people had a faith in George I I predicted George to win and cover uh but my Ms and itis was creeping in especially after that first half I'm like oh my God what's going on and then they blew them out in the second half and a lot of people had predicted that from the beginning so there are a lot of people who had very good very close predictions on the score and it's really going to come down to that tiebreaker about how Carson back I many yards he threw four and uh I thought Carson Beck coach took a good step on a national stage towards that Heisman campaign I know it's too far in advance but Carson Beck looked good I mean at one point I think he was like 12 or 13 on his passing they weren't long passes but Carson had a good day yeah you expect that from him but any way you look at it against that defense and the pressure of the situation with the out of veteran back in there uh new center you know we didn't have any bad exchanges I mean it was uh you know very workmanlike performance and you you just don't want to take it for granted you give him a lot of credit I mean plus the way really handled the game I mean Georgia always looks to me and and I always try to project this as a coach to your team you want to look to the other team like you know what you're doing you know there just something about being a little cocky look looking like you expect to do this as compared to being frantic and trying to get to the line and always being where the coach might have to be calling a timeout because of the whatever it might be or jumping around and not knowing where to line up and all that we just we just always look like we're supposed to which that means a lot to me as a coach to disconcerning to the other team it's hard enough to play Georgia if they're not playing good but when they not only look good play good then it tough on the other team I'm G give the question from Twitter real quick before you get to the ones on U Sports it's from our buddy biscuit salad which I think is one of the best handles I've ever seen I I could I could go for a biscuit eat salad a biscuit on the salad I want a salad made of biscuit hey I love biscuits and I love salad but good name so let's go for it biscuit tell us why you you kind of explained this earlier but um not everybody can watch all of our shows say how does the team handle the radio helmets for the defense since so many different players may be called on to use it the helmets are custom fit to those players how many radio equipped helmets do they have on the sideline for a game seems like it would be a lot well I mean that's a good question but the radio is what they put in it it's not every helmet has to have it all the way in there they can move these radios around and do all that the way I understand it and you can only have one person at a time with the Green Dot on it so the officials know that you know that by having a Green Dot that keep somebody from cheating to try to run two or three guys in there but and we've got backup situations we talked about last week five helmets four on four of them that are actually assigned and ones a backup in case the first guy needs one but uh but you know I think it's definitely a a situation where they have another helmet that they use that doesn't have a radio in it and pretty much I'm I'm kind of going against my I think the radio part is in there but I don't know if you can take it in or out but uh we don't have a real problem with that I mean you got the first couple linebackers and a couple DBS and then all quarterbacks this question from I've been good on ug Sports and then also Brett Goodell same one so I'll use bretts on Facebook coach how do you recur smart determine how much to play your starters against a lesser team like Tennessee Tech how do you balance the Reps and then the chemistry that you need to come into play How could injuries play a role in this well you know every uh Saturday morning before the game Kirby has a meeting with the entire staff and they go over so many scenarios about even things like what happens if we have a lightning delay you know how are we set up for food for you know rest whatever we're going to do uh what what happens if we win the toss what happens if they win the toss what happens if uh we're having trouble protection all that stuff but also who's going to get the Reps and when are we going to substitute is is set before the game you talk about we need to get so and so in there a little more or you know but you can't really project the score but uh kiry can't okay guys going in and out now if there's a situation where a guy gets hurt Corson will come up and tell Kirby and then Kirby knows you know what we got to adjust to put people in but the coaches have the leeway of sub in their players but that's all been ascertained that morning when they look at what they've done during the week and you have to practice and earn that so uh it's pretty much set up that morning and you're ready to go but sometimes during the course of a game the coach will come up and if you're in a run away say hey we got this walk on from here is okay if he's on a kickoff team or you know give him a chance but that's pretty much the way they do it from NBA timberg once a little elaboration on georg's difference in the first and second half on offense against Clemson was it better execution scheme change also says just coach thanks for always your continued support of all things dogs well I appreciate that I enjoy it uh pretty much from my situation it's pretty much a big part of my life uh my wife's passed away I enjoy football I've been a lifer for football and uh it just means a lot to me toh contribute and I try to do it from a open-minded but it's pretty much Homer perspective but give you a different look but I think just the flow of the game was pretty much the way things happen and us you know stopping oursel a little bit with penalties and then understanding the score of the game and the fact that our defense was playing so good that it was Paramount particularly into the half there when we knew we're getting a ball the second half maybe not going to two minute and giving them a chance to get back in the game right there by taking some chances because we did have a good play and then we had a penalty but uh and you couldn't help that penalty because Smith Arion Smith was uh you know it was a busted play but can't say enough about the way he played I mean he played tremendous and it's a great example of Mike boobo and J [ __ ] taking advantage of what the guy can do and not worry about the fact that he has had some drops but he is a leading touchdown maker of all our receivers that are returning he's got six career touchdowns but I I think we we weren't quite as good uh at making first downs and then the fact that we didn't have a real solid running game with the newness of the backs in there and trying to feel their way and plus Clemson's pretty good too so you're going to see Thursday night you going to see the Chiefs and Ravens are not going to go up and down the field on each other they might a little bit but it's the same way with everybody I mean you gota you got to get a feel for your team and and you got to look at it from standpoint we had a new center uh we had two two backs no excuse but you as much as you want to use your game plan and all you also want to make sure that you don't give the other team any food for just making it giving them a really good easy situation there and uh you saw in the South Carolina game South Carolina struggle the whole game and Old Dominion really had them on on the ropes and had the ball backed up ahead by three points in the quarterback and explicably tried to run some stupid play and fumbled on the six yard line South Carolina won the game so uh you got to avoid losing uh when you're trying to establish your offense as much as you try to win so I thought we did that protected the ball and uh it was conservative look at it but it's the way he coached the game based on the way to game float and we can wrap with this from dogs 1997 whose photo on the dog vent is of Chris Farley says coach you've shared that on your first series the offense is usually scripted so you can see what the defense is doing and set up plays later on when you see linebackers or even safeties biting down hard like Clemson was doing do you go ahead and pull the trigger on that play action pass early to get that chunk play or are you better off keeping the original script and letting the game play out knowing the condition of the linebackers and safeties that they're going to bite harder later on too yeah I think certainly 1997 was a good year for him to do it I like that year for Georgia but yeah when you think about the you know people read about scripting plays and all that you know I think some teams might still do that but I don't know that we do it we've got a game plan down the distance and all but more of our stuff is formational stuff to see how they're going to line up against these different looks and certainly if you if you see what you know you got a game plan based on what you expect the defense is going to do but if you know we knew going in that they were a pressure defense uh but they played a little more Zone than we thought starting out the game you know showed you pressure but played zone so we had to adjust to that but you definitely want to attack line backers that are fast flowing and you saw the second half we ran some some Jet Sweep some counters and uh you know hit the backs in the flat to take advantage of those linebackers getting caught in the middle but uh it's just hard to look like every play is going to be exactly like you want it when the other team give them credit they got coaches they Scout they do all this stuff and they've had all year to get ready for us uh you know they their players were good I mean their defensive front Stout I mean I know a couple of them trying to transfer over here this week no not [Laughter] really H the snark all right folks that's all time we have for this week's show we appreciate all of you tuning in it means a lot to us we will be back next Tuesday at noon to talk about the Georgia Tennessee Tech game and to preview Georgia on the road at Kentucky which will be a huge matchup in the evening uh come to Athens enjoy a beautiful two beautiful 2 o' kickoff might be a little but hey uh football will be back in Athens this Saturday we'll be talking about it next Tuesday we'll see you then yeah I want to tell you one thing about Tennessee Tech that I always remember uh which I think I've seen it all in the game but we played Tennessee Tech when I was at and uh no we'll forget because I mean people started doing it then but they ran a cracked screen on our linebacker where the guy went in motion and cracked our linebacker and then threw the ball to the guy in the flat and uh is right on the line of scrimmage so it's you're supposedly not supposed to block a guy downfield but it was really close because they waited our linebacker started running up to try to cover the guy and then cracked him and just perfect timing and I was griping at the rest but they were right I mean it wasn't illegal but uh that's what I remember about Tennessee Tech that crack linebacker bastards well you'll get revenge on them this weekend by folks we'll see you next week take care
