uh speaking of state of origin we're going to welcome in now our co-host here Billy Slater and of course the Queensland coach uh Bill great to see you this morning how are you feeling now knowing that game one done and dusted out of the way and you're heading to game two at the MCG one up in the series yeah thanks for having me Dan um yeah look it obviously feels good um you know getting the result in game one but you know still plenty of parts to our game that that we can work on um I was really proud of the guys and the spirit that they played with um obviously this incident was um was a a real turning point in the game um you was going down to 12 men and you know that changed the complex of of the game um but you know proud of the guys how they stuck to the task and um now we've got to do it all again in game two you spoke of that incident with ree Walsh uh how is he and how is he looking for game two are you confident that he'd be he will be there I spoke to ree yesterday actually and um you know he's recovering well from from this incident which um you to to be fair I I don't really like watching it too much but um yeah like he's um he's in good spirits he'll go through uh the 11-day protocols and um you know he won't play again um obviously for the Broncos in the next couple of weeks he he didn't play last night he won't play again next week um so yeah the good thing is is that he's um he's doing okay hey Billet 20 to 10 there was a period there where Lugo newf while sort of controlled the game what was your thoughts in that period before the Del Cherry Evans 4020 yeah to to be honest Freddy I thought new half well has played with a whole hip of character and um they were really Brave going down to 12 men and that 20 minute period after halim um it was a real arm wrestle um you know 10 points in it and you know fighting for the match really and you know I thought I thought both teams hung in there and um you I think New South WS will take a whole heap out of it so um yeah it's an origin you know you never give up in those situations and you know I thought New South Wells did a great job Billy something that origin I don't think I've really seen before is you actually got out of the coach's box and went down and spoke personally to hamile can I ask you why and and why you got out of the box and you didn't hear it he's here and what you said to himar I just went out there and told him three tries would be nice and a couple of try Savers um no uh look it's actually something that that popped into my head in the captain's run the day before um we were down on the field and I just went up to the box from the sideline um and I thought this isn't very far so if that's something that I needed to do during the game well we actually spoke about it um you know prior to the game happening and um when Reese went off and you know hemo he didn't train a whole he at fullback and we haven't prepared a whole heap like that so I just felt like I could I could give him a few pointers um and and just try and build his confidence to to go after his game um that was my main reasoning to going down there and and having a face to face conversation to to give him that confidence that that this is his time and and go and get it so um yeah it wasn't something that you know I was always going to do but you know if the if the moment was there that I was yeah yeah it was something that was in the back of my mind Michael shamron is sit here on the couch as well Bill but I want to ask is it something that uh you needed to relay to him fullback to fullback for Hammer because you could obviously you've got your assistants on the sideline there who do have the headsets on but it felt like it was something that uh was pretty important between two fullbacks to discuss yeah and there's some real simple things in in that position that you you know you need to be focusing on and obviously we see the big picture and the the great tries and and the the bright and shiny stuff that fullbacks do but um it's really the simple stuff that um that is the main focus and and that was my my main message to to hemmer so just in and around helping the team with numbers and um just a couple of little focuses and and like I said before the other thing was just to build his confidence to to go and get the game so um yeah it wasn't anything there's no magic for formula or magic dust it's it's hard work and and simplicity helps hey Bill I know you you're quite disappointed with the treatment of R Walsh and now that you had some time to look at it and think about it I know you said don't like looking at it but the fact that he got four weeks I know you would have planned for the he'd be targeted was your issue the fact that it went horribly wrong you I imagine you planned for the fact that he would be targeted ree Walsh no we didn't plan for what happened to Reese um you I don't think anyone go into the game planning for that sort of like yeah I I honestly don't like watching it too much it's it's pretty sickening and it's not great for our game um I can't imagine too many Ms and dads would want to throw their kids in the car and take them down to the the closest Junior rugby league ground and sign him up for rugby league watching this sort of stuff so um I I was really disappointed because I I know how hard he he prepared for the game um he had great clarity around what his game looked like and he was ready to go after it and and that was taken away from him you only seven minutes into the contest so look I haven't commented on the on the incident you know and we're four days post game I I don't think my comments is going to do the game um or any individuals involved in the incident um any benefit of me commenting now so I'll leave it at that uh Bill great to see you and um hopefully we'll see you back in studio next week nice colors we're wearing too we got the matchy shirts with chamus as well we'll see how to pen the sa Bill no I think I think billy gets the afternoon off be sick you look sick bill got a story he listening I'm backstabbing put it on I got a story about going down to the sideline so I did it a couple of years ago at sunor and when I went to go down cuz I went to press the lift I'll stand there for 5 minutes half the game had gone by I'm standing looking at the BL M what are you doing he Sorry Brad I was there for 5 minutes missed 5 minutes of the game did you win no we got beat Matt B got Sim in after getting bashed remember that yeah that was hilarious um yeah I went down to see Matt you know just go make sure everything was all right and yes I was stand there for 5 minutes as the lift wouldn't come uh H yeah usually they do have security guards holding it but if you're if you're going down early they uh they weren't aware of it all right let's talk New South Wales uh looking ahead to to game two uh Joey would you be making many changes if so what changes would you be making well the first one Latrell just has to come in there's no ifs or butts and there's all rumors floating around that you know something happened pre camp that he didn't talk to MCH or didn't turn up or something who cares just get him in there serious X Factor he destroyed him yesterday he's just got to be there him and SP cryon in the centers and obviously the other big one is niik will come under all sorts of pressure and I get the feeling that it's Moses Mitchell Moses's number seven to lose what do what do you make of like M has made it clear that he wants to pick players that suit the style he wants to play the effort areas and I sat here last week and or a couple weeks ago saying that he should have been pick Latrell can you see the coach going against that philosophy that he stood for because really the best players need to be picking Latrell Mitchell is in our best 17 right he's the best player and whatever's happened in the past you got to menend that or or sort it out or managed different personality that we all know the Trail's a big personality but that's the job of the coach you got to manage those personalities well Freddy's probably the best one to talk about that I want to ask you something what about the kicker kicking who's the best kicker we scored our both tries off kicks who's our best kicker in your South Wales of the yeah obviously well Adam Reynolds I think's the best in-game kicker but obviously Mitch is Mitch has got a big boot on him um he's been doing it for power for a long time can kick you out of trouble um from Deep in your own territory too um so in terms of kicking Mitch is probably the probably the best kicker I remember there was a grand final where you had a pretty good kicking game Billy say it says what bil what did Billy say he said it was he said he couldn't believe it he said he stood there the whole night with his foot that far from the tri line and you just kept him on the TR line the whole night did you you putting your hand up to play Half Back like how how confident are you to be able to run a team around yeah I'm not I'm not going to sit here and stay the case but I'm always I always bet I I love last week in cam it was it was awesome F did you see yourself as a 58 not a first receiver um obviously I played that six role for the roosters right but I don't probably don't play a conventional six role probably more in the shape of like Jimmy Maloney style not the big body running 58 yeah um more that smaller seven can complement a half a bit better kicks a lot a kick probably a lot more than normal seven but um but I'm I'm a realist too right I'm I'm not in the Cherry ripe of my career and if you told me six weeks ago I was gonna be in origin Camp I would have laughed at you and then obviously boys start dropping and um I was so happy to be there but well also you start winning like it's very different confidence everything everything starts yeah your team change you know St Walker made a difference without a doubt but you know like everyone's Outlook just changed and like you your play just went you know pretty much through the roof like just yeah when you're in form and you're confident things start happening probably the best I've felt in a few years this start of the Season we've we've struggled a little bit at the Roost of the last couple years to the start of the seasons but um it's been really enjoyable this year Sam Sammy Walker's on fire Teddy's been awesome at the back and having Spencer in there Lindsay these boys are laying a platform Victor for us it's been fun so Joey you said uh it's you think it's Mitch Moses's uh spot to lose then looking at the halves pairing does the combination of uh Mitch and Jerome suit or would you be looking to to change that number six jersey have they played together Moses and Jerome oh no well game three last last year game three last year Moses and Cody were Dynamic together I know it was a dead rubber but they look worked really well together um look we could see the other night the kicking game in origin wasn't sort of up to scratch really um so moses' kicking game will come in you know what I found too many balls went to ground Again The Times They did try to spread the ball that comes down to players being disorganized not knowing they're right well I understand I'm saying chus you spoke about uh so this was a big era the first kick and then they marched down field and scored um you spoke for trying thought that about m m the style of play we didn't see mag style because suali suali got sent off right any idea what the style of play is he wanted to play well Luke's probably better better position to talk about it than me but I just sort of looking at niiko Hines and I don't know it's probably unfair to ask Luke but they were they were never going to win that well going to they were up against it to win that game so it's unfair to put the loss on niik hin but it looked as though he had the chance to to show people that that theory that that widely held perception that in the big moments nikah Hines goes missing he didn't nail it I don't know is it a reflection of nikah hines's game management ability or was it a reflection of a lack of game plan or a lack of detail because they looked lost out there not game plan or detail I just think when sui went off everything went out the window but there's times during the game where they looked disorganized and the kicking game wasn't up to scratch and also defensively there was a few misses and the last try in particular it was heemo scor the last try when Deon went through I don't know we got footage of that but some of the movements niik defensively there W Freddy got critici like Freddy got crucified over interchange selections and the way that game panned out after so went off like I I know they were up against it but Hudson young all week Michael McGuire said he was going to be our cover our Center didn't get on till 55 60 minutes they took 15 20 minutes to bring Steven kryon into to switch him over the other side what did you make of that the way they adjusted to Su going off um well it took a while for them to adjust to it I know one stage Li and um Angus cried and was swapping sides and I watch Angus running back to the left and wonder what was going on there like you needed a stationary for people there because that's where they were heading to and they're always going to attack um Nick Ohan so I think you end up working out to bring Steven Cen on and and move Hudson over to the left hand side so it just took time you know and then all of a sudden there was a couple of hias and you know it does you you got to um you know what you hope for the best and plan for the worst and I think what happened was it just took a while to get that plan into play and in that period there was about two tries straight away and that hurt him is that the thing though when you're going into I know it's a it's obviously chaos when when things like this happen and it was chaos on Wednesday night when uh SW got sent off but J I feel like like you need to nail the reshuffle and nail it very quickly cuz otherwise you're up against it would have been hard in the seventh minute right because he obviously you'd want your middles to go for 25 30 minutes um in that situation you'd usually take a middle off but to take a middle off after seven minutes to take a jake or pain you're probably not taking camo off at on the seventh minute they would have had to take one of them off to get Hudson on to move Kon to the right it did happen very quickly but the game was nearly done after minutes after they scored two tries like as stuff you go through and you'll say right not normally someone sent off you go if someone s him what do we do you know if he s in what do we do if he Sim in if that position Sim in if that one you do it for every player so normally there would be a a chain reaction once it happened but the sendoff made it different because obviously you got to last at 73 minutes not 10 minutes and you know burn a center they didn't have a back on the bench so you know not easy you can't you can't cover everywhere the players got to cover everywhere like as a coach you can't there's too many things that can happen like you know like you're talking about hookers halfbacks you know you look across the field there's so many different bodies and things that they're good at you can't cover all them and the team that wins gets it right the team that loses gets it wrong so that's just the way it is it resembled their Melbourne game really high energy they had a couple of chances actually to walk away from this although Brisbane controlled the game for a fair bit of it but they just kept going they just they kept fighting pring very pretty much like the Melbourne game where they went down to Amy Park and one it's two great winds on the on the road yeah you can tell they're a little bit they're a little bit like two losses in a row up in Brisbane they were down by eight at half time I think you could tell they were just holding on and then Royce hunt and H EO after halim just went crazy and then the whole momentum shift I think Tristan sailor made a couple erors Fletcher Baker and then all of a sudden it was over cuz it felt like the Broncos were on were some really strong defensive efforts but then it sort of just fell away tough tough the I think pain and Patty carrian went off had the bench on there to start the second half and three tries in 10 minutes I think to start you can tell no Direction like under pressure when the game when can hit the front there was no Adam Reynolds no one to kick him back into the game and you worry about the Broncos you get him in an arm wrestle and they don't stay in the arm wrestle they want to play the flashy game I just get worried if you lose they didn't have their fallback in back they're two of the best players in the comp Bron Trindle was good best on the field Telo was good and Roy Hun he was the difference I thought Roy H what's he like on BR trenle he's good mate he's um he's real crafty real crafty unassuming good footwork good kicking game he's obviously had a bit of bit of trouble this year but they've got him back in the team and he he'll be there six defensively technique that Kennedy was good again uh although brght and Bradley um come up with a couple of really nice plays from dummy half he was Shar they've really um they've changed the way they play last year we played them a couple times and they were really expansive niik was shifting side to side and they pulled it right back in their outside backs were all over 200 met last night they don't do much passing now out of yardage just get to their kicks kick in Corners let their big boys kind of take over I always really liked him as a player he was playing 5 a i SP to Fitzy about him a few years ago he said you really like him as a player and he was playing 5 a said nobody's halfback thought he played really well last night Top Notch how big of a threat do you think konala are in this competition obviously they're sitting uh at the top of the ladder there are often question marks about them uh you know winning those those big games because they haven't won a finals match how big of a threat do you feel they are this year they've won a few now I think they um they knocked us off at Magic R they went up to Melbourne without niik they went to Brisbane without niik last night so as I said they've refined their game a little bit they've kind of tightened the screws like like penth do out of yard just get out of yardage kick the ball back down there and it'll definitely be Fitzy looking at those big games going how can we win these at the back end what's the youngbl Off the Bench the real big real big guy not Royce H um tku yes he was at the roosters yeah's he's he's a good boy he's anous big is he he's enormous what's his name tuku tuku yeah geez he played well last night too what about for the Broncos would they be worried about this one considering you take into account they are missing Adam Reynolds ree Walsh and a lot of players backing up from state of yes and no it's hard to win that your best players and your strike players but they might have them for a while yeah they're up 8 n they were at Reynolds for a while once again I worry about when they get in an arm wrestle and it's a real dog fight arm wrestle not flushy game that sometimes they can buckle with it and they don't respect it they want to play that still expensive style when sometimes you just got to play ugly and get it done seem to be losing a lot of players like they're one of those teams that they haven't won a grand final but they keep losing players they're such a good talented team everyone looks to them to get players and they have such a big Nursery as well so they need to nail one they need one soon because they get picked at all the time you look at lost cap W they lost the BLS to the Dolphins like the Dolphins around the corner now so they're always at FL Farm I still think they the team to beat they get out of origin and they're pretty much full strength I back he's going to be back towards the end of the end of the season so final I think it's final few back late last month Milly Elliot great to have you on uh a few days now since game two obviously disappointing to finish the way that it did but a fantastic night a fantastic game how are you feeling now yeah it was it was great for women's body at the end of the day it was a sold out crowd where they did sell out but um the weather Gods weren't too good as they haven't been lately in Newcastle but um to get still get over 25,000 people there was was UN unbelievable and you know what a what a game right to the end um disappointing obviously uh to not get the win but uh sets it up for a great game three did you feel in control I think watching both games I would say New South Wales I think spent 75% of the game in control did it feel like that um at times uh definitely but then you know when you get on the back foot and they get their uh you know front e running good lines getting um quick play the balls and then you know you let people like Ali Bria and Taran can um you know get on that Advantage line and just get their run of play there you know Allie's not the fastest she's the smartest but um um Taran getting you know that quick ball she loves it um right on the line and yeah didn't we wen't in control there where we are you aware of the noise during the game because it's a different noise the young girls it's like being at a Boodles girls would not the Boodles like beinging at a Justin bobber concert but the young the amount of young girls and also young boys there that that must blow your way the support of the younger generation yeah it really is it's such a um it's it's hard to Fathom that there all of these people are turning up uh for us which is really cool um but to have you know not only young girls but young boys there as well families and to you know it's nice and loud it's it's great to be a part of running out it's such a cool feeling one I never thought that I'd ever um experience so um just standing there the an's playing you know with your mates it's looking up and um seeing the crowd and everyone there it's it's so surreal what was going through your head when that field goal went over cuz I I was watch I watching it going you can't really kick a field goal well honestly the momentum changed um when the ball went out off you know we got a try um and they got the Run of play they got another quick try and then L kicked that field goal I honestly couldn't believe that it even stood up I couldn't believe it got off the ground um but you know Lo she's got a background in in soccer she's a great player such a great competitor Newcastle Jets she played for Newcastle Jets so I know she's been playing on that field and now she kicked him into a decider so yeah she had she had a great game and it was a I honestly couldn't believe it to be honest there was even some kick pressure she she was really deep really deep the ball near barely got to her yeah she kicked to fi goals in nrw yeah no she's a great she's a great Giger Townsville what happens in Townsville Townsville we we go again we reset we watch the game back haven't watched it back yet um yeah it's hopefully it's a nice hard to watch back that one they scored their last two tries in the last 10 minutes yeah I know that I know going into game three Fredy remember going to game three sometimes a play even the game on the line you start feeling a bit flat how are you feeling here not feeling flat after the big two games in the buildup body's a bit sore um obviously it's still I think people are you know sometimes forget we still haven't really played much footy like um it's that's our second game of the year which is which is crazy for most of us so um we'll be better for it uh leading into to Townsville and some warmer weather hopefully but um no I mean we'll regroup and and get into camp and see what needs to be done and yeah it's exciting heading to Townsville does that mean that if you win you head to the Mad Cow afterwards again like last Freddy's got his credit card sorry look the credit card the cash I think I think everyone ends up at the madcow regardless last year everyone did I saw you there I saw everyone I had the time my life we even lost so well we won but we lost but yeah no it's a it's probably the is that the only spot to actually go out no there's plenty others there's more where you got to improve from game two oh look I think we've got to look back on it I think we we probably didn't um go through the middle as much as we should have I know that um us forwards had a bit of a quiet game in our attack and we probably tried to shift it a little bit too much especially in the wet um our our good ball sets we didn't capitalize on um you know on our time in good ball and few erors obviously with the wet that comes but uh can just be better around that area around the Rock and and winning that and then capitalizing and turning it into to points pretty much the whole game pretty much the whole game really start start start to finish a you ticked off everything there oh well where do you think we need to improve Joey um don't know I was uh I watched it at home I wasn't working so I have to watch it over again I think like watching watching watching the women's game um the kicking's the one the kicking's the one like I thought in both games you were dominant you look dominant I feel position was dominant it's just that getting restarts um you know really finishing sets and stuff like that yeah he's did that really well at sunor uh the conditions are very different but uh it's you know at the end of the day when you go to that next level your King game has to be so precise because that's entirely where pressure comes from like you can be so good one to five but if your six tackle option is poor and you don't get it you don't challenge the kick or you don't get a restart and that's the big thing with the girls game and you just saw Lauren you know there someone with a soccer background you know on a wet ground nail a field goal in those conditions it just shows you know it just needs to be more king of practice getting better at that last set I think all you got to do Make It or Break It they've been good the last month the Warriors since Shawn Johnson's been injured they're under the pump Adam was Adam come back after getting dropped last week but tamari Martin Freddy mentioned it before he is playing some outstanding what about the cows last week what happened there we were hold what what impressed you about them last week they were just tough they had all the origin boys out they fought hard U they kicked us in M they didn't they did not much out of Y they kicked us into bad spots and we just we fell over but feel like maybe with the origin boys back they're a little bit a little bit complacent to start the game how hard's the comp but you flogged the Warriors the week before then you get beat by the cow boys without their best players and then the Warriors go there and fled the Cowboys if you physically don't turn up up you lose whether you're versing team number one or team number 17 you lose and it's been shown all through the comp this year right penth lost to St George yesterday we've beaten St George beaten the Warriors lost the it's it's it's all over the shop but consistency rules at the end of the day by the end of the year they're very good War they did said just strangled them they didn't let him in the game at all I couldn't believe The Outsiders in this one the warri coming off coming off what you know you got to think the Cowboys what they did with the roosters last week and then they get all a lot of their plays back they're pretty tough It's a think tough read that's what it is do you think the cows will make the eight no but I think the Warriors might oh the Warriors will for sure cuz the they're out of the eight this is a Time generally during origin where they they get a h of points and then they got a lot out after origin they all come back Roger and Shawn and all those who do you think so Manley Sit On The Fringe uh the Warriors are out of the eight the Warriors going you got matter all them war will been there definitely and who comes out then who do you think falls out well depending on injuries big one Manley maybe CRA sitting in the eight at the moment yeah you question me whether Cambra can CU their draw start of the Year's been pretty favorable hasn't it CRA they going this next patch they're playing a lot of the top teams but they keep on winning when everyone's not tipping them but the Warriors will be in there for sure cuz the Warriors had a huge injury toll at one point they were missing so many players there was one week there that it was about had the big win a couple of weeks ago who did they beat when they had everyone out they had about 15 of their top out the Dolphins at home Dolphins at home that was a Hu and that's turned him around turned him around looking ahead though so toari Martin he was he was incredible Shan Johnson's expected to be back uh next week if not the week after how does the team then sit with tamari available sha Johnson available well Chanel Harris comes into play with Jaz Tanga they're there versatile sort of players who can cover hooker cover another position Tanga covers back row lock forward played in the middle uh so you know with Dylan Walker I think Dylan Walker is a huge um in for the Warriors He's been injured you know for a lot of the year Well you play with Dylan yeah aw um he's you know he is so versatile I was trying to pick him in the origin but he's foot he had a broken foot last year and they said it was going to get better but he covers he's played plenty of hooker for him play center hav plays in the middle of the moment for them like he's a huge bonus and I think that nearly forces Tang out and Harris goes to the bench well medcu Luke medcu he had the hamstring injury didn't he was it is is he here for the year no no I think he's back I think he's yeah back in a couple of months maybe cuz when he's in he adds speed to that team yeah so speed through the middle don't he support whether he comes back but until then it'll be sha and and and definitely tamari for sure you can't drop it be interesting to listening tamari last night he said he's loving playing on the ball so when sha are is on the ball tamari will play left half uh Chan will be on the right he said he was uncomfortable with that do you do you Chuck him back in do you Chuck sha I'd play him on the ball and let sha Run seconder play play 58 R for sure the hook is a big one though I think he's awesome he's so slick when how straight he plays at the Mark CU he holds him all the time he's as good as anyone so what a win this was for South cityne obviously they've had some tough times but now this one puts them off the bottom of the ladder it started bad for the TOs and just never got better pretty much every 10 minutes sou Sydney scored a try uh Cody was in form Latrell was obviously in form uh cookie set up the first try of nice but dash out of dummy half and there was a a running battle between Cody and FAA which was unbelievably entertaining and I think that everyone stopped looking at the score at the end of the game and just waiting for these two to come together again but uh at the end of the day I was Latrell really everyone was talking about Latrell giving Origins around the corner and he stood up well Cody got the last laugh with the win but Davis he got he got Cody he absolutely nailed him at one point when he went over to score a try but L MIT a lot of the discussion has been about him uh Luke do you think that he would be most suited to that New South Wales V yeah yeah he he will be like he's been there before obviously he's he's performed really well and I've been with him in some big games and I the effect he has on the people around him and the opposition uh it's something you can't really see unless you're on the field uh whether he's in form or out of form here right he's he's he's not the guy that's going to take 20 carries like Teddy and Dylan Edwards and these BS but he's got a presence and an influence I've only seen it a few players Greg Greg engas had it latrell's got it too put him at left Center he has to be picked for origin simple as that I actually watched looking at the South STW now Friday night next week we're doing this game you see it live and free I re they beat the Broncos and I I think they'll go on a run the their next couple of months on paper they're winnable games and they have a buy in there I'm not saying I'm not saying they're going to make the eight but I'm saying the Run needs to be downhill cuz it's a Christmas said you're saying I'm a chance they're going to go on a run now they're getting players back and think Ken Murray comes back there there's their their their next five games C Mar be back next week I think they'll go on a run I think they'll beat Brisbane on Friday night well I think it is something about nine I think they need to win nine from 11 remaining I mean it's tough you are you putting a line through them straight away yeah why just too tough to well there's a good chance LR play start of origin it was a big reason why they won that game you all of a sudden you get one more injury um no I just feel like they haven't done enough leading into this moment and the Titans will Paul so even there they got param coming up who have got a got a a completely different game now field position they got the Broncos they got the Dolphins who are a totally different team I think a little bit tougher Manley a little bit tougher I think they're going to go on a real run what do you think has ignited in them well I just think they're getting ke players back and confidence confidence is an amazing need don't know where it goes or how it comes back but they look so confident and when the BL at number one when the Troll's in a mood he's so infectious on everyone around him he just he lifs him and say k Mar bang I think they're going to run all right we'll have to wait and see for Bunny's fans they'll be so wor
