Harris, Walz Appear In First Major TV Interview + More | The World Today

hello everyone and thanks for joining us on the world today I'm amarachi ubani here in Lagos here's what's coming up within the hour Mexico's military attack roads blocked in the outbreak of violence in drug Hotel strongholds inor the world today Starts Now to us politics now Democratic Presidential nominee kamla Harris and her running mate Tim Walls have appeared in the first major TV interview the one-on-one interview with CNN marks the Duo's first in-depth conversation since launching their bid for the United States presidency the hourong interview with CNN's Anor Dana Bash took place in the coastal city of Savannah Miss Harry spoke on a number of issues from foreign policy to immigration to the economy amongst others now in the interview Harris explained how her positions on border security have evolved since she first ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019 in her words my values have not changed the Vice President in a shocking Revelation also hinted about appointing a republican to her cabinet she spoke about the phone call she received from President Joe Biden on July 21st that changed everything for her she recalled I asked him are you sure and he said yes Miss Harris said she believes history will show Biden's presidency was transformative and view his decision to withdraw from the race as one that is reflective of his character she described the president as someone who is quite selfless and puts the American people first meanwhile her Republican opponent Donald Trump has reacted to the interview typical Trump who took to his truth social media platform described the interview as boring and described Miss Harris as a fraud well vice president Harris also made a stop at her campaign rally in Savannah Georgia taken a swing at Donald Trump she criticized his 2025 agenda and spoke about abortion rights and claim Mr Trump introduced further restrictions with a National Abortion ban calling it immoral but we got some work to do okay we got some work to do because we know Donald Trump has a very different plan he has a very different plan just look at his project 2025 agenda right if he is elected Donald Trump intends to give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations he intends he intends to cut Social Security and Medicare and he wants to impose what in effect is a national sales tax on everyday products and basic necessities and it will cost the economists will tell you it will cost a typical American Family nearly $4,000 a year in fact every state in the South except for Virginia has a trump abortion fan and think about that many with no exceptions even for rape and incest that is immoral immoral and let us all agree one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling her what to do come on come on hold up for a second let me let me just say something let me just say something we are fighting for a democracy everyone has a right and should have their voices heard I am speaking now but on the subject I will say this the president and I are working around the clock we've got to get a hostage deal done and get a ceasefire done now now the former president held his own campaign Ry in the US state of Wisconsin Trump criticized his opponents for the loss of worldwide respect stating that other countries do not respect the United States anymore he recounted Hungarian prime minister Victor orban's response to a question about the world's issues indicating many want him back as president a very strong leader from Victor Orban a very strong leader from Hungary prime minister of Hungary they asked him recently about what's the problem in the world a few years ago during my time we had no Pro we didn't have Israel being attacked we didn't have Russia attacking Ukraine and they asked him why is it so bad now the Middle East is on fire uh so many places are on fire and there are plenty uh places that could very well and very quickly catch on what's the problem he said you have to bring Trump back back as president of the United States you will have no problem he singlehandedly kept things and it's true and I could do it with telephone calls by being smart but literally he said you have to bring Trump back now he used the term I wouldn't use he said everybody was afraid of trump you know who was afraid of trump they said China was afraid of trump Russia was afraid of trump they were all and I don't want to say that I will say this they respected me and they respected our nation they don't respect our Nation anymore they don't respect our nation [Music] anymore joining us now is President Ameritas corporate Council on Africa and partner gainful Solutions stepen Hayes Steven Joyce is from Washington DC as Stephen your ears and eyes must be full by now uh watching the campaigns of both Harris and Trump and I think we'll start from the former president who says that um everyone wants him back as president and uh countries like China and Russia are afraid of trump coming back as presidents let's get your thoughts on that that's an easy one the polls right now show that everyone doesn't want uh president former president Trump back uh he's trailing in the polls overall nationally 49 to 47% which makes it a very very close one but clearly uh everyone doesn't want him back uh I would doubt that uh China uh wants him Russia might uh given his relationship with Putin but uh I I think that uh it's going to be a very very close election I like everyone else here I'm praying for 75 days to go by quickly so we can get this resolved but uh even then I doubt that the president will AC the former president will accept uh results if he's on the losing end yeah and he also argues that um you know the uh war in Ukraine would never have happened if he was president he also claims that Israel would never have had to invade Gaza to go after the Hamas militants if he was also president he feels he'd have had a better relationship you know with the leaders of these two countries and um that dialogue would have prevailed in the end not um a war well I I don't agree with him frankly uh I I think that he may have some Credence on Ukraine simply because he would have overwhelmingly supported Putin and he would have uh blocked arms support to Ukraine so perhaps that war wouldn't have happened but perhaps then too A whole nation would be in slavery essentially beholden to to Russia like the O zaris time and the inst stalinist period uh as far as Israel goes um that's I think that remains to be seen prime minister Netanyahu clearly would like Trump um and that's uh that's no secret is something that others have noted as well uh he has uh in fact uh I think slowed the negotiations down and and hope that the elections will come come about positively for Trump so I I think there's there's there's a um Twisted logic to what Trump says but not not for the reasons that he says to camela Harris now and Tim Waltz they held their first joint TV interview uh yesterday night I believe uh many Americans had a chance to watch and I think a lot of people were expecting U more from the vice president I mean she she she she seems to be fine you know when she has a script but but this interview I'm not sure that it really hit home you know the issues for many Americans um was she in-depth enough for you I I think that first of it's one of the few areas that I agree with Trump the interview is a bit boring but in fact boring may be good at this stage we have we have uh something far far less controversial uh to speak about yeah frankly the question is I I don't think that the interview reflects poorly on either of the two I thought the two did fine I think it reflected more poorly on the uh questioner Dana Bush frankly uh I don't think the questions were of great depth uh there were what we would call softball questions uh just throwing it up and easily hit back uh the questions were predictable I would like to have seen a little more questions on the depth of uh what what uh she sees as policy in the future uh where she would like to take the the the nation those questions really she was given that opportunity when Dana Bash asked um what would you do on your first day in office she was given the opportunity to speak about you know policies and so on and it just seemed like she was rambling on and on and on unlike Trump who would have itemized and probably outlined you know what he would do on his first day in office well I I agree with you that Trump would would in fact say exactly what what he would do I think I think it I think you're also very perceptive I think honestly I think the question caught her a little by surprise but then when you think about what what really happens on the first day what really happens on the first day you're trying to get everything organized you're try you're you're trying to lay lay out the structure to be able to operate quite frankly but uh yes I think that's one area she could have done she could have done much better on and Tim Walls uh he did get his few minutes um you know of Spotlight there uh not sure that uh he had many talking points um what do you make of the little that he said I say little because I haven't seen much reaction to What Tim Waltz said in the interview and I think that you know the focus was more on camela having to you know get her to speak on you know her policies and her intentions as president no as it should be frankly uh I mean she's the one that's going to be setting a policy the uh most most of the vice presidents in the United States have always walked away saying it's one of the worst jobs in the world where they really have very little that they can do and have very very little effect on anybody else uh Dick Cheney under President Bush uh George W Bush might be an exception but the vice presidents have had very little little effect so uh I I think wals Comforts the middle class more I think he's more of a downhome person and you're right he didn't have much of a chance to talk on policy but in fact about generally who he is indirectly by bringing out his family and of course the military question was was brought up and that was I think that was very predictable expected she did also mention appointing a republican to her cabinet you think this is a plan she could follow through yes I do uh I think it's it's fairly easy even uh even though independent Republicans are harder independent and good thinking Republicans are harder to find uh he U I think every president of the last uh not every president but most presidents of late have gotten somebody else from the political party uh Obama did it Clinton did it uh so I I think it's a good idea frankly that if in fact the best possible person happens to be a republican who happens to be of Integrity then by all means why not I think it's a good idea we need we need some more parts coming together in this country well Stephen thanks again for your thoughts I'm sure we'll be reaching out to you um we've got more days ahead of us November 5th is right around the corner so I'm sure that there will be a lot to talk about thank thanks again for joining us on the world today thank you an honor as usual thank you to Mexico now where there's been an outbreak of violence in the Northern caloa State home to one of the country's most powerful drug cartels according to authorities Mexican military personnel were attacked by gunmen while also setting roadblocks the asants also set two vehicles on fire with the aim of blocking authorities while officials did not specify a motive for this attack that been fears that a wider violence might break out in caloa following the the reent detentions of top caloa drug lords and new figures show that cyber attacks are doing big damage to Europe's number one economy German businesses say that data and it theft have cost the economy billions it's one of Germany's number one trading partners that could be the home base for many of these cyber Thieves for more we turn to the DOI vas Cassandra sun in Berlin Cassandra great to see you what kind of damage are we talking about here well the attacks really range the Gambit from Data Theft to Industrial Espionage or even sabotage the survey is by a trade Association here called bitcom and it found that 80% of German businesses reported being hit by some kind of attack and it's estimated that the German economy suffered damage of up to 267 bill billion euros in the last 12 months from acts of industrial Espionage and cyber crime now that's up nearly 30% from the year before the survey found that Russia was to blame for 39% of the attacks which sounds like a lot but Russia wasn't even the country where most of the attacks came from China held that honor despite being one of CH of Germany's biggest trading partners around 45% of companies surveyed said they could attribute at least one attack to China for example it was recently revealed that Chinese hack had spied on German Auto giant Volkswagen for years and that really caused considerable consternation in industrial circles here and what does this tell us about the economic relationship between Germany and China the relationship status would definitely be its complicated China remains a vital economic partner for Germany it's almost always a top trading partner for the country but at the same time China is recognized by the current coalition government as a rival Germany's not alone here either Berlin and many other Western capitals are wary of falling into the Trap they fell into with Russia where there was an overreliance on one country for an essential product now previously that was Germany's dependence on Russia for energy but despite that Germany's investments in China have actually continued to increase despite government warnings to drisk the relationship with China and as we wrap this up Cassandra what can businesses is do to protect themselves against this kind of Espionage well the president of bitcom acknowledged that the figures from the survey show how quote conflict-ridden and tense today's world is he said that German and Chinese companies are heavily intertwined and we're living in a globalized economy so it would be very difficult to undo several decades of Supply chains joint ventures and the like so he acknowledged that while companies are setting aside more money annually for digital security the average it budget now includes 177% for security more planning has to be done including emergency plans in place in case of security incidents in Supply chains let's head to Sudan now where at least 31 people have died as flat Waters sweep through many communities and villages in the northern region from the past two days many people have lost loved ones in their homes heavy rain and flooding across Sudan this month has impacted more than 3 117,000 people according to officials of those impacted 118,000 have been displaced exacerbating one of the world's biggest displacement crisis due to the ongoing war in the country Tuesday Mark 500 Days since Sudan plunged into war after fighting broke out between the Sudanese armed forces and the rapid support forces or the rsf meanwhile the United Nations Deputy Secret secary General Amina Muhammad is calling for an increase in international Aid to Sudan as the country opened a key border crossing to facilitate humanitarian access Mrs Muhammad was on a one- day visit to Port Sudan holding talks with Sudanese military leader Abdul fat Alban and other officials the discussions focused on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan and the urgent need to expand Aid delivery channels the United Nations deputy secretary General Mrs Amina Muhammad arrives the airport in Port Sudan and is welcomed by the Sudanese women and government officials who gift her flowers accompanied by ramani lamara the personal Envoy for Sudan as well as the resident coordinator for Sudan Clementine unqua salami and Senior officials from the world food program unhcr and Unice Mrs Amina Muhammad is here in the Red Sea state of Sudan to press for more focus on strengthening humanitarian efforts in the country uh the visit has been um at the uh opportunity of uh the government opening up the uh Border in adre the humanitarian task that we have in Sudan has been very big uh it has been one that we have been consistently supporting the government to try to address the crisis in the country uh the many atrocities that we have seen visit upon men women children especially um and for that we wanted to come to speak and to support the government in keeping that uh border open and Aid uh to the people that need it most um across the country but in this particular case this new opening gave us another opportunity the deputy secretary General also says the objective of the visit is to bring to light the magnitude of the crisis in Sudan and to ensure a reaches those in need more discussions are held with Admiral ibraim jabir Karim the assistant commander-in chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces who represented military Chief abdal fata alboran the second of course is to bring um to bring the International Community again uh with their to see the visibility of the crisis here in Sudan um it is a huge one there are many people suffering it requires enormous support uh for uh commitments that have been made uh to the humanitarian cause but have to be fulfilled and they have to be done urgently um we have impending crisis around famine we are not getting medical supplies in where um there are Health crises uh but more importantly we have to remember the suffering of the people and here um to to to do this with the government um of Sudan after discussions Mrs Muhammad and other un officials visited the Abdula naagi internally displaced Gathering side they meet with displaced persons as well as with the UN team and with a number of government officials on ground the United Nations estimates that over 20 million people in Sudan nearly half the population need humanitarian assistance the conflict that began in April 2023 has displaced Millions disrupted essential services and fielded food insecurity well the number of business Liquidations in the South African economy decreased by 5% year on year in July 2024 this represents a decline of seven liquidations dropping from a total of 140 in July 2023 to 133 in July 2024 one of the 100 of the 133 liquidations recorded in 2024 13 were compuls liquidations while 123 beg and 120 were voluntary liquidations principal survey statistician at Stats essay onica mushana explains 33
