what are you serious living I just paid rent I just paid rent Trevor and the Oilers continue to live rentree in my mind Leon dry settle signs and how does that relate to anything Vancouver Canucks man thatle potentially losing Conor McDavid uh and all would have been Justin raid in the world if that happened but alas Leon dry CLE decides to resign in deadmonton with a contract paying him $14 million per season wow beginning in the 2025 26 campaign what do we think about that and what does it mean for your Vancouver Canucks and this rivalry we're goingon to get into to all of that I'm gonna say at the top before I introduce my co-host that bring it on baby bring it on okay I want to see this become the best rivalry in hockey it got off to a damn good start last year with the Canucks kicking some ass and the regular season pushing the oers to game seven in the second round the Rivalry is just beginning and as here to stay for years and years ahead let's go let's do this Canucks Oilers make it the best rivalry in the NHL let's go baby and uh let me introduce my co-host okay I think you might be feeling a bit differently about this but Kyle Bowen first and foremost I miss you brother welcome back how you doing yeah and I love you too man straight up man we got to keep saying that every day man rest in peace to Matthew and Johnny GD uh still feeling the effects of that one love to uh their families and uh yeah condolences man man straight up um yeah Leon dry settle man signs a big deal $14 million a year for eight more years uh that's also meaning that we're gonna see McDavid do the same pretty soon for real apparently dry sadle did a lot of research before signing his life away to Edmonton and you best believe a lot of that research had to do with confirming the notion that McDavid is going to stay there for a long time as well and as Trevor alluded to in his little Spiel that means means if the Canucks continue to rise up the rankings and stay competitive that yeah this is going to be the greatest rivalry in hockey right two competitive teams two Western teams uh throwing in the uh the dynamic play from both teams but more more specifically like having to go up against two of the best players ever because that's that's the truth we're talking about two of the greatest playoff performers ever to Leon dry Sidle right up there with Mario lemie and Wayne Gretzky right same thing with McDavid it's crazy it just adds to the pot adds to the fuel and adds to this belief that the Canucks they slipped up dude this is why I'm emotional man they slipped up I hate to be in the past we September new season around the corner but what if yes what if the Canucks do defeat the Oilers in game seven round two what if they defeat them in game six is this contract happening probably not we we killed the Oilers and uh we let them off the hook and now they're going to be around for a long time and Trevor you're a brave guy you say bringing it on I say bring it on too right I'm I'm going to get stronger from this I'm going to be confident but man oh man I cannot stop thinking about the fact that again we let them off the hook yeah and you kept talking about that during round two as well right about let's end the dynasty we're going to end it right here I think that was a common refrain when you and I were chatting on this program locked on Canucks back in May and yeah that would have been something else man honestly and it's I actually spent some time over the weekend uh actually last week when my son was sick and I was at home and I watched the series rewind of Vancouver and Edmonton on YouTube yeah I'm a masochist man I like the pain but there Al some beautiful moments in there too and there's moments you forget about as well I know like Quinn Hughes had a shot through traffic I think it was in game two and the Oilers won in overtime and Stuart Skinner just got a piece of it in time you know there's so many moments in that Series where especially when you go to seven games six of the seven games are decided by one goal that anything could have happened right we talked to ad nauseum about what would happened if Demco back in the lineup but look at the end of the day man rivalries are good for hockey and the NHL lacks good rivalries right now right I'm not sure if it's just because there's too many teams in the league or it's not quite as you know feisty and fierce as it used to be but you know I look around the NHL and I just I want there to be more rivalries I want there to be more hate in the NHL and I think this uh Vancouver conu Evon Oilers rivalry has the potential to be something else and got me all fueled up too I there was this post on Instagram in the Summer where these fans met Dr settle at a restaurant and I think the fan was an Oilers fan but really like Quinn Hughes and he mentioned something about liking Quinn Hughes and dry made the comment he's like well he's golfing now just ruthless stuff and uh grinds my gears man because of course I don't want to see Quinn Hughes Golf and I want to see Quinn Hughes in the Vancouver KS playing final but yeah man on man and Dr like obviously with the Sheila's Comet as well the guy he's driven but he can also be a bit of an a-hole by the sounds of it too so's got for me that's easy to hate uh he's making the big boy bucks now but uh I definitely want to see the Canucks you know uh be pushing dry out around a bit next season because this guy has torched Us in the power play over the years they did they did push him around didn't they break his rib like they did they did everything in fact you know pretty much after like game I would say like game six game five like dry CID wasn't really the same player I feel as if he picked up 60% of his points during that playoff run in the first like 10 games but the guy's an absolute Warrior and you know the whole p thing uh his bite his his dirtiness his his mouth you you tally that up with again the amount of skill again we're talking about Mario ask Wayne gry ask it just it just makes the uh the route harder for the Vancouver Canucks which which isn't the worst thing I mean it's only been 55 years and the Canucks have not won a Stanley Cup it's only been like 57,000 years and the Canucks have been past the second round two uh three times like no big deal just who cares make it harder for us who cares but man oh man like I said it would have been uh you use the word dynasty I think he used that Loosely and just uh it's early in the morning and it's it's the the first day after Labor Day there's no Dynasty with the edmont oers but there could be there could be now because those guys are staying around for a very long time they they almost tasted uh the water at the mountain top and they're going to be driven uh the Oilers are going to be a tough beat for years and years and years to come and more specifically speaking uh this season I know they lost holway broberg McLoud Fogle blah blah blah but again they have Mari Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky playing for their team um speaking of which uh th this made me think a lot about Pon too okay th straight up everyone's talking about the4 million dry settle is going to be making in like 12 months blah blah blah for 46 years and I'm here thinking about the 11.6 is it 11.6 or 11.3 anyways it's the 11 it's the 11 plus million dollars that Patterson's gonna make this season and that's kind of nowhere close to $14 million but for for whatever reason I'm thinking about that contract and Patterson's ability to exceed expectations barring again having that contract over his head like I feel like I'm about to put a lot more pressure on him just because dry SD will sound with Edmonton is that fair because bro it's it's real now it's real like to get to the Stanley Cup for the next decade you're gonna have to get through McDavid and dry cidal get like Pon stepped the F up and it starts now yeah you know what if you want to look at I think there's two perspectives here right there's the there's the mathematical perspective and there's what the conu need perspective you know like based on their cits you know if Pon is 80% of the player that dry setle is then they're probably at fair value right like dyle's contract is just a bit more than P's P's got about you know 80% of D dry contract so that's the mathematical perspective but to your point Kyle the Canucks need Pon to almost be like a heart candidate they need him to be an MVP like player which he has the ability to do he's shown in the past the guy has over a point per game average in over 400 Korean NHL games like the guy's an absolute Beast out there and again I think we both like to think that the best version of Pon has yet to come but he's gonna enter this season with some trepidation right I think a lot of the a lot of Canuck fans even the big Pon Believers like you and me are probably feeling a little bit nervous about what this guy can do ENT next season um because of the slow the slow finish last season because of the mediocrity in the playoffs not even mediocrity he was just flat out bad need p to be an elite player and can Pon be a better player than Dell that's asking to me that's probably asking a bit much I mean d is a pretty damn good hockey player but he's got to be on that level right mcdavid's on a planet of his loan a planet of his own but Pon needs to be on that dry CLE tier if the Canucks are going to beat this team first and foremost and secondly win the Stanley Cup that would be tough I mean like that'd be super tough for patteron to be on the dry side of level I mean this dude's incredible like if McDavid is 99 overall dry SLE when he's firing at all cylinders he's like 97 ironically overall and there's been a lot of cases where he's a better better playoff performer than McDavid that's just the truth that again if you if you wna if you want to say Patterson has to be 80% of the player dve settle is sure that'll be good enough I just just come to play the whole way through and when it when it comes to be April and May Point per game minimum you know what I'm saying Point per game minimum it's just the truth you can't be being out scored double by the the other team's best players and I know I'm I'm circling a lot of this uh emphasis around dryy McDavid but Trevor you alluded to the fact that again these guys are our Rivals we're we're going to be playing these guys multiple times you can't be getting outplay that much by their best players it's just the truth so again dry SLE sence at 14 mil eight more years pson about to start his eight-year deal with 11.6 and uh again I'm feeling I'm feeling as if I got to play the compare game and the buck stops here and there there's no more being super super nice to pson it's it's go time and man oh man the Oilers and the Canucks and McDavid and dry saddle vers all of us it's realize this Canucks fans yeah the team is getting a lot better and Hughes and Demco and tet and Company and it feels good to be a Canucks fan again September's around the corner I'm telling you today was a bit of I'm not going to say A Dark Day in Canucks history that's saying too much but it got a lot harder to win the Stanley Cup moving forward it's just the truth cuz we're not talking about dry settle and McDavid being two really good players two number ones bro they're two of the best players of all time by the time it's all said and done these guys might be two of the top six players two of the top seven players to ever play the game of hockey and now we have to get through that for the next decade yeah I'm not quite putting drle in that tier but uh you know he's definitely been one of the best players top five player in the NHL right now top seven all to he's been a top two player he's been a top two a top player in the last like five years the other guy's McDavid they have two of those guys you have to take in the playoff to point totals too like this guy's a effing Beast bro yeah I I think I think McKinnon and MC deserve to be in that conversation but that's that's a rabbit hole for another day I ain't given J as many flowers as you're giv him uh on the other side what I do want to look at here is the cap situation for both these two teams because you mentioned it McDavid and D two the best players in the game but what are the future odds for these teams based on their contract situations right let's dive into a bit on the other side before we do that let's shout out our friends over at fandu all right you know you've heard us talk about fandu a lot on this program because they are America's number one Sportsbook well they have a little something different for you now okay now through September 2nd 22nd I should say all FanDuel customers can bet $5 and get a three-week free trial of NFL Sunday Ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV then with the YouTube TV base plan you'll be able to watch every regular season Sunday afternoon out of Market game all you need is a Google account and a current form of payment and you can cancel any time now before three Kyle season starts this week NFL how you feel about your Green Bay Packers Friday why why everyone love why does everyone love them so much they're mediocre team anyways I was about to say Friday we're we're gonna play a game in Brazil to start off my season okay that's crazy I'm getting drunk even though I said I was gon to stop drinking for a bit yeah they're starting on playing on Friday against Philadelphia not a lot of people don't even know that like you're Die Hard in Brazil yes bro come on man anyways it starts this Friday for the Packers why do everyone or why does everyone love the Packers after just having a successful second half of the season I don't know okay it's a a lot of it has to do with Jordan love okay for Real Love is in the air and I'm not going to be too pessimistic but I will say this the world would be a better place if love is again the face of the NFL because love love conquers okay anyways Trevor continue all right well we'll see how it goes man I think my Seahawks going finish better than your Packers let's go man ride the Ginos Smith train and make sure you go visit f.com and download America's number one Sportsbook Bo [Applause] [Music] bam people people we back doing this and that's talking about your Vancouver Canucks and their Edmonton Oilers what do we doing here man what are we doing here man it's a kuu show look at this uh comment from Kurt Richardson okay the Oilers haven't done anything with MC David dry sadle why is it scary now they haven't done anything they beat us they beat us in the playoff series the seven game series we had two chances to eliminate them and what did we do we didn't eliminate them bro again not having a Stanley Cup I kind of want it to be easy I'm not going to lie and what happened today makes that a little bit harder thankfully though I like it hard man I like it stiff I like it rough whatever gets the job done anyways Trevor uh what other thoughts do you have uh surrounding this uh this topic again dry SLE signs the whole Patterson thing it's his time to wake up uh what else is on your mind yeah I mean we talked about a lot over the summer but really it's you know how do these two teams compare to each other and I think we've kind of gone over that you know a couple times this summer what I kind of wanted to do is look at the cap situations of these two teams right because look it's one thing to have the best players in the world on your team or you need you need Elite Talent but you also need a team to win in hockey right I mean I would say aside from the NFL or aside from football in general you know hockey is the greatest team sport out there it's really hard to win just with individual talent and that's been the Oilers flaw for a long time is that they only got Leon and McDavid uh doing the work but obviously Emon approved that depth but I still look at both these teams in their contract situations and you know credit to alv and Rutherford they've cleaned up a lot of the anchor contracts on this team like you look at the Canucks now and it's they don't have an anchor contract anymore right like you know obviously Tucker pman LTM I think Myers maybe at three million a bit overpaid but in general this is a team with a pretty clean cap situation uh a team that has Miller on a sweetheart deal for a long time uh Quin Hughes three more years at $7.85 million um I think the Phil pronic deal is not a bad one either you know you look at the Canucks and unless you're a massive Pon hater is's not a bad contract on this team because that's the only one that potentially scares you if Pon is more like the player we saw in the last two months but I certainly don't believe that to be the case long term you look at the Edmonton Oilers cap situation and I think theyve actually done a pretty good job of cleaning things up over the years as well like Zack hman on that $5.5 million per season contract man oh man that is I didn't think it was a good contract when they signed it but it's one of the best ones in the NHL the new jet shade over five million that guy's been almost a 100o player but the thing about the Edmonton Oilers is K we talked about you kind of down putut it at the time they're an older team like I know Leon and uh McDavid 2728 but like you got Heyman who's in his 30s Kane who's I I think close to being done to be honest n is in his 30s a lot of the depth players like arvidson HRI Jeff Skinner Matias Yanmar Cory Perry Connor Brown Derek Ryan every almost every player on this team actually here here's a crazy stat for you every player among their forwards is over the age of 30 except for McDavid Dr SLE and Vil pod Coen that's crazy man that's crazy so even though their cap Situation's a bit better at forward the fact that everyone's over the age of 30 to me means that their window is right now no it is and you know the other thing that you have to throw in there is what 13 months from now you're looking at a team spending what 50% of the cap maybe like 49% of the cap on yeah McDavid dry sadle but also Bard and Darnell nurse like that you're looking at like 44 million bucks it's crazy more more than that gonna be around 16 million sort to cut you off I think McDavid is gonna be around 16 million rard one more doesn't he have one more year left on that deal like next year he'll still be getting paid like whatever he's being paid so in like two years like this team's gonna have like $50 million spent on four players but here's the thing like we talk about the age we talk about even these contract KS like again I just want to emphasize that I know this is not basketball it's a completely different sport but this team was what one goal away from you know taking Florida at overtime in in the seven gam Stanley Cup Final series Like Anything could happen and again this team has Gretzky and Lemieux on their team it's like unheard of you it's crazy put them together that you can't stop them separate them sometimes you can't stop them too like it's it's like that's the card that they can play and sometimes times that can override the whole like oh you got Cory Perry on your team and it's boosting up your age total age to like 29 Point whatever making you the oldest team in the league and like it's like I I I don't look too much into it because I'm giv a lot of respect to again uh dry cidal and McDavid yeah you know what I think uh two things come to my mind here and you're right they are two best players in the game but again looking at both these teams not a lot of cap headaches except for you mentioned it Darnell M right that 9.25 million dollars for oh my God the next four the next five seasons that is a massive problem contract for the Edmonton Oilers and I think it's probably gonna have to end with in a bio with nurse because the be giving up you know draft picks and you know prospects from a depleted Prospect pool to trade this guy it's probably G have to end in a buyout and again that's that's gonna hurt I know the K's kind of swall a similar pill with oel as well right um but yeah the other thing I think about two with these contract situ and I'm kind of talking smack about the Edon oers being an old team but the Canucks might be one of you know when you look at average age right now I think they were like 18th in the NHL in terms of uh how old they are right so they're about middle of the pack in terms of roster age roster average age but a big guy there JT Miller I know he's only 31 years old but the window on JT Miller like if JT Miller does start to decline that would really change the the Outlook of the team because again they don't have a great Prospect pool right you got Lara Mack and wander and a bunch of Dart throws now again this is a management team in alven Rutherford that I think is pretty bold I think they deserve a lot of trust right alven was one of the best GMS in the League last year whereas the Edmonton Oilers hired a bit of a dirt bag so you know I trust the Canucks in terms of their team building moving forward um but again I think that's the kind of tug and pull right the evans's got two of the best players on the planet I think the Canucks you know probably have a better team in general based on what I'm projecting Alvin and Rutherford to do moving forward and and another comment from Kurt Richardson kind of cementing what Trevor's saying right there's no Demco in that series our depth killed us no Pon in that series uh we are a much better team if you know all things go correct for your Vancouver to KN um on the other side let's do it let's read some comments and then I'm gonna ask Trevor like how do you feel as if again it was a one goal game we were right there almost beat the Oilers but how do you feel I guess what's the equation in beating the Edmonton others like how does this version of the Canucks do it look at all the new Sun All That Jazz treor will answer that question after the break uh who we shout out let's also get to the comments some people calling out Rick talk it to in the comments too I we're getting emotional like everyone's going back to game seven on May 20th or whatever okay it's crazy times man again I just want to say this again we were a win away from ending everything Oilers okay dry settle is not extending okay he's not extending before the season starts if we beat the Oilers and then you never know 14 months from now 15 months from now 20 months from now McD was not playing for the Oilers whatever the math is like we're that close from ending the the city of Edmonton close but not quite but you know it is close us coming back on the other side no ad read for me pausing for an ad break here and we'll be back here on locked on [Applause] [Music] kcks people people people we back doing this and I promise you we're going to be talking more about your Vancouver Canucks to end off the show a lot of Angus beef talk AKA Alberton talk AKA German talk AKA Leon dle signing a $14 million deal worth for for eight years like what a like are you serious the first day back at school and this is the information I get unreal unreal that being said your Canucks yes your Canucks and Rick toet a better team according to Trevor bags and a lot of people in the comments below man oh man Trevor bags take it away answer the question how did the Canucks beat the Oilers this year in the playoffs I it comes down to a couple things I think it's depth and more specifically speed again we talk about the Edmonton Oilers bit of an old team especially UPF front you know the canox and in terms of the players they added this summer a lot of them pretty fast guys right Daniel sprong not good defensively he's a fast hockey player dandon Hein and Keir Sherwood fast hockey players as well I think the con have done a better job of emphasizing speed up front um now on the back end it's the complete opposite they got a bunch of slow guys there but we're talking about the keys beating Edmonton it um I Adam foot's a key for me too like Adam foot has a a massive job ahead of him and we might talk about that later this week as well maybe the toughest job in hockey um but it's it's the speed up front you know overwhelming the Oilers with their four lines again Oilers fans they were coming after me saying the far forwards way better look I think the Oilers forwards are better obviously because of the guys up top but I do like the Canucks in terms of their four lines probably better than what the Oilers can roll out and their bottom six um and the other big one is go tending too right like this is that is the massive trump card that the Canucks have over the Oilers like you look at this team right now and they're putting all their eggs in the steuart Skinner and Calvin peard peard basket to me that is that is a dangerous game for a team with win now aspirations right like I think the canox have said have a three-year window the Oilers I'm not quite sure exactly what their window is because McDavid and D are so damn good but three years even seem to be a stretch based on the players they have on the roster how good is are Newen and Hyman G to be in three years who else is going to step up on this team in terms of young forwards I mean like that this team in two to three years like could just be McDavid dyle and buard right like this isn't a crazy deep team um and it's deeper now than I think it might be in a couple years time so um I think again in terms of being next season that's what matters first and foremost it's you know I think the speed and the four checking that taco implements is going to be big up front with the forwards and the goal tending is got to be better when em is putting out and I believe it will be yeah and bro Trevor to be honest maybe maybe we need to chill this week so you can slap me you know slap me around put me in a choke hole DDT me okay hit the Swanton bomb on me okay for real because I don't know where this pessimistic energy is coming from I think honestly I'm a little tired post Mexico trip and I haven't rested well I'm also starting to feel like a little fever creeping in uh even yesterday man I pulled up to the gym and I parked like an parked like an and some dude was trying to open his car next to me and I just looked at him like that's that's not me that's irregular behavior for me I don't know where this is coming from but all this talk about the Oilers goal tending and how much you're po pooing on them makes me want to think about the Canucks goal tending and like what's where's dco is Demco in Ukraine or not Ukraine but like is he in like Amsterdam getting like a a special procedure done you know what I'm saying like is he seeing some Specialists out there to get this secret Co Kobe Bryant ass surgery done on his knee you know what I'm saying like where is he and if he's not there bro we got she lovs you get what I'm saying I I'm just not at that point right now giving the Canucks all their flowers and all the respect based on one year of success and I've said that multiple times this summer I'm optimistic I want us to win the cup I say we're stacked I know we have a lot of Talent on this team but it's hard to win it's hard to win and that Oilers team as much as I hate them and they're living rentree in my head and I'm so petty and I hate playing against dry Sidle All That Jazz that same Oilers team went from last to almost beating the Canucks in the Pacific Division and then went from being down 3-2 to the Canucks and then destroying them in the last two games quote unquote game seven was a bit of a mismatch okay if you take that third period away Real Talk we're getting dominated and that same Oilers team came back from a three nothing deficit against Florida to almost win the St cup like I'm giving that team a lot of respect I'm not going to lie because they proved me wrong a million times last year yeah and but we've talked about it right it was uh you know they had a great run up the standings for sure and coaching chains can do that and look it's a good hockey team right like I don't know if we should be overly surprised with the Oilers rise back to relevance even though we were absolutely crap talking them in November after we' beat them three games uh to n there early in the season but um you know the season was crazy and look I'm bring this comment from D atronic we're talking about the what ifs you know on a semi break we try to tuck it in if we get a one nothing lead as jigat tronic mentions the knucks played pretty damn good with the lead this season so there's a lot of crazy what ifs with with this team with that and man oh man I can't wait uh for these two teams to to meet up again in 2024 25 in the regular season for sure but I I believe they're on a crash course to meet in the playoffs as well let's go get to some more com to show out this one from nuck fan 77 you know what Rick toet has that mcdde doesn't have Stanley Cups baby Stanley Cups and look this Canucks organization they got a lot of stut pedigree right and not the tainted dirty stalling at pedigree like Stan Bowman brings to Edmonton but they got real Stanley at pedigree with toet and foot let's go baby damn that's something else look at this comment from Yan you know I talked about Patterson missing in the weer series I talked about Demco missing in the weer series Johan name I may I may name name my daughter Johan okay my future daughter Johan straight up this is a really nice name uh we didn't have besser in game seven either okay if we have a fully healthy roster we can win the Stanley Cup we can I believe that and we're gonna have to beat the Oilers to get there bro again it's going to be a lot of fun it's going to be stressful it's going to be the greatest rivalry in hockey the Oilers and kaks you know Trevor you got to give our we got to give ourselves a little bit of credit okay back in October I think it was game two game two straight up after we beat the Oilers 81 we said it we said this is going to be the greatest rivalry in hockey okay and it's lining up to be that way because both these teams have a lot of topend talent and I don't think last year was quote unquote a fluke for both teams like I think they're going to be on a crash course they're going to get it done they're going to meet in the playoffs they're going to meet in the second round it's uh absolutely the truth now Trevor before we get out of here let's tease a conversation for tomorrow okay I'm going to put it in your head I'm I'm going to let people comment about this as well uh we haven't talked about this much I don't know maybe I missed it on one of your episodes but you talk about the goal tending being a problem for the Canucks potentially you talk about the speed and all these new players and the Canucks being more Dynamic potentially helping them beat the Oilers in the future right does Rick toet lay off want to be more offensive which again he said he wanted to do right after the lost to the Oilers he he it like yo I should have let these guys have a leash more I should have let them play a lot more offense okay instead of all this puzzle structure stuff like that's the next step for the canak lean into the Patterson and the Hughes and lean into that skill do you think taket steps away from that or contradicts himself because now we may have Sheila starting in net in the beginning of the season and N Demco like that's something I want to be put in your head in our listeners heads before we really dive into this maybe tomorrow or on Wednesday or Thursday whatever day it is today unlocked on Canucks yeah let's get to it and I did touch on it very briefly on a previous episode of lock on
