gentlemen great Jake assen ladies gentlemen Nick Sean than uh Nick let's let's address the elephant in the room go ahead you bullied a lot of eight-year-olds trying to pursue a Bree Hall autograph after practice on Saturday what do you have to say for yourself uh the kids deserved it you you saw how out of line they were uh but I honest to God I got lucky I I didn't bully anyone like as as cool as it is like to tell the story like and embellish it I literally walked over there was a 13-year-old who was having resign it I was like have him sign this too he looks at me he goes reaches over and goes hey can you sign this for the guy I go no guy no guy no guy just ask him to sign signed it I came back I was back to you in less than two minutes like how quick it happened as much as I would have loved to stiff arm or shove some of those children around who were completely out of line and unparented I I didn't get the opportunity to well I don't believe you but I will say it was very impressive how quickly your son failed at securing the autograph from Bree you're gone for two minutes and you come back with that signed autograph say you got to know how to work the crowd you got to know how to work the crowd he's too timid he's too timid but he's young he's he's 15 he's he's trying to be nice I get it the world will change him he he will learn through experiences but he did get it eventually he did get the football sign too so just not as quick as pops so originally Nick we were gonna come on we're going to talk about some of the takeaways from practice today and we still will and we'll get into the latest with Hassan reik who once again start of a week a week where the Jets at the end of the week play their first preseason game he's not there but right before we signed on the air the Jets released their first death chart for the upcoming season now it's important to note it's not really a dep chart they call it a dep chart it's more like a to deep you don't get the full roster you basically have you know the the starters and the primary backups and it's also unofficial so for context a year ago Carl Lawson was listed ahead of Germaine Johnson and Bryce Huff so it's not the end all be all but there are some takeaways you could gather from looking at one of these for the very first time so let's break it down together everyone I'm going to put it up on the screen and we'll kind of go through some of the things that stand out so we'll start with the offense here and Nick the first thing that I think is noteworthy is the three starting receivers listed obviously Garrett Wilson but then you have Alan Lazard and Xavier Gibson so despite the fact Malachi Corley has been getting all the Reps because Gibson is injured currently Gibson is still listed as the starting slot receiver with Alan Lazard the obvious number two with Garrett Wilson being the number one behind Lazard on the depth chart is Herb Charles which I don't know if I buy because I think Jason brownley has come on the last couple of uh practices here and then in the slot you have Corley backing up Gibson Malik Taylor is backing up Garrett Wilson so just taking a look at this wide receiver to deep here any surprises cuz I don't think it's that big of a surprise we know they Gibson and I don't think they're going to take away his job just just because he got hurt at the beginning of training camp well let's let's rewind and look at the history what the Jets do this early in the off season or in in training camp right last year titman was third on the depth chart at Center they make their rookies earn it they don't gift them anything remember s uh s wasn't even I think a starter on the first step chart his rookie year they they make the guys earn it Corley being the backup slot is where the rookie should be right now right they have a little trust they have a little faith in Gibson they know what he is yes he's injured corley's getting those reps but they like their rookies to rise they'd rather the rookie start low and Rise than give it to him too early and he falls off the face of the Earth right you don't you don't want to set your young guys up for failure you want to build them up you want to coach them up you want to watch them succeed so I don't think it's any surprise that that the rookies poly is behind Gibson as of right now totally agree some of the other things that kind of stand out here uh not that there's any surprise but you look at the tight end depth chart it's clearly Concklin and Rucker listed as the two starters yaboa is behind Rucker Co is the listed backup for Concklin so I don't think there's any surprise there the other position I wanted to highlight here on the offense is when you look at the offensive line Tyron Smith starter duh Olu listed as the backup to him at left tackle to this point Olu has only been the left tackle in this offense but you continue to look at the offensive line here left guard Simpson behind him Jake Hansen center titman it's Chris Glazer who's listed as the backup center I found that interesting not West schwitzer we've all we've all assumed schwitzer would be the backup center at least according to this he is not Morgan Moses's primary backup is Max Mitchell which makes sense he'd be in front of Carter Warren because if you watch the scrimmage on Saturday like Nick and I did the starting right tackle with the offense was Max Mitchell out there uh protecting Aaron Rogers so just some thoughts on the state of the offensive line depth chart here I fully believe right now schwitzer is the backup center but you can't put him on the second team as Center and guard right like I think he's interior lineman number one that goes in at any of the three spots I that's that's what I believe I don't think they'll put Hansen or Glazer in above schwitzer if in a game and the first teams out there something happens I believe schweer is the first guy to go in so but when you're doing a depth chart you can't have him schwitzer schwitzer schwier you know uh I just think that that's where they're at we know Carter Warren is injured so that's why Max Mitchell is that right tackle first I don't think Mitchell beats Carter Warren out for that spot uh everything we've heard about Warren says he'll be there so I just think when you when you have to fill out that depth you have to put everyone's name in right you can't use multiple guys so no no real surprises there uh would just hope we never have to see those names come in right exactly exactly we hope this is the last time we talk about the backup offensive lineman we hope this is the year yep 100% the other thing I wanted to highlight here this kind of backs what we have seen starting running back Bree behind him brilin Allen in front of Isaiah Davis and Israel abanikanda which makes sense I think Izzy is firmly fighting for a roster spot with Xavian valade and look brayan Allen I think is going to have a a role in this offense I think Isaiah Davis is is you know maybe eventually going to be a guy they turn to I think he's been impressive from what I've seen But brayan Allen is out there with the starters he's getting a lot of work in short yardage he's more of a weapon than I think a lot of people realized as a pass catcher so this kind of tracks what we've seen with the one-w combo being Bree and bril and Allen in that running back situation for the Jets yeah Allen was uh extremely impressive for his agility his Mobility for a guy who we've talked about being so Terminator like and how muscular and massive he is I thought he was really light on his feet the other day Jake I I really did like I was impressed with him getting through the hole being able to bounce it outside I always call like the the when you take the angle and you get through the interior and you beat the linebackers I always call that the Curtis Martin run to me Curtis Martin was the king of the eight to 13 yard run where he'd get through the hole and beat the linebacker on an angle to the sideline and never take that big hit from the linebacker Allen got in the middle a lot they ran him up the middle but he was able to kick it out and and outrun the linebackers towards the sideline so that ability impressed me and if you can bring that in as your rb2 and you can give Bree some spells especially when we get leads something we're not used to playing with I know Google it other teams have done it it's called the lead some teams get to play with it we're going to be one of them this year uh don't want to throw terms out there that that the chat's not used to hearing um but when you can bring in a guy like that who can run over you and run around and buy you that's that's a really really nice addition to the the running back room especially after what we saw last year with cook and Carter so I think that was a really good pick by the Jets and I'm I'm excited to see what he brings in and the special team stuff is more noteworthy than some of the stuff we've covered here with the offense when you look at the depth chart from a defensive standpoint no Hassan reic so I think the first thing you want to look at is okay how do they align the defensive ends I'm going to go full screen here to try and make it easier for people to see but listed as the starting Edge no surprise Germaine Johnson behind him Will McDonald why is that notable because the other starting Edge is Michael Clemens so at least in terms of the Jets first depth chart here Will McDonald 15th overall pick last year he is listed as the backup on the defensive line rotation not a starter Michael Clemens is listed as the starter which tracks based on what we have seen so far nick uh through the first 10 days at training camp and what we saw in the scrimmage on Saturday where it was Clemens and Germaine as the two starting edges once they get Fric eventually signed if they ever do I still they will then it will obviously be Germaine and Assan reic but at least in the first unofficial depth chart here Michael Clemens is still holding off Will McDonald yeah let let me ask you a question we know Germaine can play The Run and he can play the pass do you see any scenarios where maybe Germaine is saved for pass rushing Downs if he starts to be the pass rusher we expect him to be in year three where maybe it's reick and Clemens out there on the rundowns and then you're bringing in will and Germaine maybe on the pass rushing Downs he's we know they're going to shuffle right it's not it's not black and white when it comes to to the defensive line that's the one area on the team kind of like receivers right we know they're going to rotate we know they're going to move they're goingon to have different packages they're gonna have their turbo package they're gonna have their run stuffing package but I'm I'm curious to see how they used Clemens Clemens was someone I'll admit I thought might be a cut candidate especially after we got reic I was like I don't know and now you're seeing him being with the ones and and invol evolving into that jfm role of that run stuffer physical end um I mean anything that you say about the ends can't be written in stone because it's going to be a heavy rotation every play there might be coming in and out but I'm I'm just curious to see the breakdown of who's in there on the rundowns who are they bringing in on the pass rush Downs who's carrying over and doing both reck played what 72% of the snaps last year at at the end he was in the 70s right more than any of our guys so he can play the run as well I'm curious to see how it all works out you know and how the percentages break down when we get everybody there yeah I I agree with you and I think when you look at the defensive line rotation like once they add reic it obviously changes but I see a lot of people are like what does this mean for Will McDonald that he's not in front of you know Michael Clemens and I just want to caution every Jeet fan remember last year Carl awson was listed ahead of Jermaine Johnson and Bryce huff and once they actually got to the games we know how that worked Carl Lawson barely played then he was a healthy and active he had no role on the team so you know I say I say take it with a grain of salt but we do need to start seeing more from Will McDonald and earlier today I read that he had a very good practice he had a sack or would be sack on Aaron Rogers so maybe Will McDonald is starting to kind of come come along here and I do think when it comes to you know the joint practice on Thursday and the game on Saturday I would expect McDonald to play especially in in the uh game on Saturday I think you want to see him flash this preseason like he he should be taking a big step forward as former first round Guy full offseason program as a pro full year and change now in this defense he should be ready to roll come preseason you'd like to see him play so well that he stops playing like that's the goal right play so well flash where they say all right you got it you're showing it now uh I did see sein's tweet today his um recap of of camp and said that Morgan Moses was was stuffing him he said that will McDonald tried to spin move a couple times and and Moses stalemated him so good sign that we have a right tackle who can who can pass block we know he's a very good run blocker but I I want to see our guys go against different guys when you're going against the same guy day after day you know their moves you know what they're going to do you can get a better read on them uh I'm very curious to see what will does going out there and and possibly you know starting and and getting a lot of reps as the backup as far as the linebackers they list jamen Sherwood as a starter here but we know the Jets don't really have three linebackers on the field all that often cuz of the modern era of passing you're in dime package a lot so yeah but sherwoods had a great Camp man he was so good in that scrimmage on Saturday had another big day today in fact I think he had an interception of Rogers On the deflection they said today worth noting Rogers has thrown only three picks all Camp they've all been on deflections he's yet to throw like a true interception imagine that if that happens in the regular season man oh my God but I I bring up Sherwood because I do think uh that if something were to happen to Mosley or Williams the Jets aren't screwed there I think jam and Sherwood a really good player yeah if you don't mind I'm going to read part of to's tweet it says linebacker Jamie and Sherwood with an interception continue to impress he might be one of the most improved players on defense he doesn't get a lot of play because the linebacker three and they're in the nickel so often as as you stated but he has made a nice transition from college safety if something were to happen to CJ Sherwood would likely be the Mike linebacker so they believe in him they they've coached them up and I believe Zack rosenblad had something too along the lines of he was so busy getting everyone else aligned up he himself wasn't mentally ready when the ball was getting snapped and that's something he's worked on uh to to be prepared when the ball snapped instead of doing all get the calls and checks done earlier and then get your mind right before ball it's a great point I mean and look this guy was not a natural linebacker either it was converted safety so you know there's a lot a lot of work that goes into that he's also a High character dude jamen sherard I know someone who personally knows him from Florida great great dude so I'm rooting for Jamie and Sherwood a lot uh other takeway how great is that to say though like excuse me how how great is that to say as a Jet fan like you could say that about almost everybody like gone are the days of the head cases and and and the and all of the off the- field nonsense we've had to deal with with GMS who didn't do the homework or didn't value character the way that the Douglas regime does so it's it's great that we can constantly it almost gets old now right that we say that about all all of these guys it's something new to us I I I think it's I think it matters man because when you face adversity like you really learn a lot about guys and I think last year as big of a nightmare as it was for us as fans like it will be good for the 2024 team that they went through losing Rogers the defense still never cracked you know the defense still never blamed the offense you didn't have any that infighting that you see with losing teams like you know no one's celebrating a seven and 10 season but it would have been very easy for the Jets to win a lot less than seven or a lot less than seven games uh given the circumstances of just how bad it was post Rogers injury offensively you correct uh we do have a Bobby update in the chat Robert Woodruff at 423 he called me when uh you were doing the depth chart I took it real quick he's in the ER and the doc sent him there from the womb clinic so I I'll get updates later and uh I'll keep you posted Bobby get healthy my man all right keep us posted take yep we're thinking about you bud you I knew he had the doctor's appointment this morning so Bobby your health is your wealth man you got to take care of yourself all right amen hopefully hopefully he's still watching anyway more things I want to break down with you Nick as we all send our thoughts to Bobby Hit the Bobby Emoji any of the three I believe we have for uh our guy Bobby out there uh the the Special Teams aspect of the depth chart here which actually matters a lot more now with the new pickoff rules according to the depth chart here which we'll go full screen again the Jets list punt returner and kick returner as Xavier Gibson and they have the same listing for both so we'll just go through kick returner because that's what's important with the new rules Isaiah Davis is listed as the second team returner corly the third Brandon codron the fourth I think this is a competition that will play out in the preseason I think Gibson's on this team because he's also an actual receiver but you need two returners now with the new rules Nick I think it's Isaiah Davis Corley kodri I think they're all battling it out for that second returner spot because I I'd be shocked if Gibson who won them a damn game last year with his returning prowess is not one of the guys back there on kickoffs and I think he'll probably still be the primary pump returner but he if Corley dominates that role you know he's basically a you know a running back with the ball in his hands that'd be a weapon to have as a returner 100% And and now with the new kick rules you might work that like you work wide receiver packages you might have certain returns that call for GI based on your blocking scheme and the play call and you might have others that call for the more physical Corley or Davis to be the main return guy so you might not have kick returner one every single return like we've seen in the past it might be schematic it might be game situation it might be based off the play call where you're changing U the parts to make the play workor so I I think kick return we're going to see some flexibility back there and you're going to see maybe three or even a fourth got used depending on game situations but I think punt return should be Gibson's to lose if he starts getting the drops with the ball again it's going to be a short leash yep you know that ball starts hitting the turf uh accountability is something that's been popping up a lot in jet Camp right even with the offense Simpson jumped out of he's taken out Lazard dropped taken out uh it's I think it's going to carry over and that's something that we've all asked for from the coaching staff to have more accountability so give him a chance he's healthy he should be punt returner one without question uh he does have the big play ability he did it but you get slippery hands you're going to be anked so to recap our takeaways from the first unofficial depth chart to the Jets put out minutes before we signed on the air brayan Allen number two running back ahead of Isaiah Davis and Izzy Max Mitchell the number two right tackle ahead of Carter Warren Michael Clemens the starting left defensive end ahead of Will McDonald at the wide receiver spot Xavier Gibson despite his injury is still ahead of Malachi Corley at the slot receiver position Alan Lazard is listed as the other starter opposite Garrett Wilson Malik Taylor number two behind Garrett Wilson herb Charles number two behind Lazard listed higher on the depth chart than Jason brownley Mike Williams is still on the pup list so he's not listed on the depth chart and as you heard us just say kick returner Xavier Gibson 1 Isaiah Davis 2 Corley 3 codrington number four those are some takes on the depth chart now I want to get into the latest on the Hassan reic situation Nick because Robert Silo was asked earlier okay at what point do you start to get concerned hey if reck doesn't get here he's not going to get enough practice time to be ready for the season does he need training camps I I don't know you know because there's examples of players who you know like Aaron Donald Chris Jones a couple years ago didn't show up till week one and uh they did just fine so uh you know when you get to that stage in your career my I don't I don't have a I don't have the right answer for you on that for you as a coaching staff not having that hands- on time with him will that make it harder if it if it does linger on to kind of prepare for week one and how do you you know accept that Challenger or manage that chall we always you know there's players come and go all the time and are uh unfortunately um you're always having to make adjustments on the fly but uh uh I I'll say it again that that's the it's not the easiest position but the last position that I'm worried about uh getting caught up to speed so I mean at what point do we worry Jet fans to me I'm surprised it's it it has made it into the month of August I'm surprised that another week went by after you had a positive report last Saturday that the two sides were making progress so something obviously either stalled in those talks or the report from josa Anderson just wasn't true that said uh ask me by my event on August 17th about Hanan reik if he's not there by then then I am going to be annoyed I don't want to say I'm gonna be worried but here's my thing when he shows up what type of shape is he in we don't know like Aaron Donald and Chris Jones are future Hall of Fame players like to me it's a little different when Dell Rivas missed time and then he showed up and was still derell Rivas in 2010 like those guys are future Hall of Fame players like reick is really good he's not that level of player so I don't know I I just I think you you wonder about type of shape he's in and then also if he's not in great shape and he's trying to push it to go out there because he's playing for a new contract he knows he's going to be a free agent at the end of the year is he gonna get hurt right is he gonna suffer an injury because his body's not conditioned to play NFL football so I'm not worried yet I will say ask me after the 17th about a sign reic and if he's not signed by then then I'm gonna start to get annoyed on Monday the 19th I'll give you 48 hours because it's three weeks from the opener on Monday the 19th uh something that a lot of Fans Say won't be game ready well with nobody playing in the preseason who's really game ready in the NFL who's in game shape week one we saw Bree Hall get caught from behind last year in week one right a lot of guys are not in game shape because the preseason has turned into a joke nobody's on the field nobody's getting their game reps they do one drive a dress rehearsal and pull everybody he doesn't have to get the timing down he's not a quarterback wide receiver he's not an interior and offensive lineman communic ation he's an edge rusher go right like of course there might be a stunt here or there that's easy to figure out in three weeks that's plenty of time he's got the Playbook I'm sure you know he's under contract he's got the Playbook it's just a matter of getting there uh I think the fans right now are more upset because there was a trade for the player and you know there are the there are the fans out there who want to burn Joe Douglas for everything that he does and then exploit all the wrong moves that they think are wrong I should say but but I'm not stressing it now uh there is one great decision maker that can change everything and that's Woody Johnson Woody Johnson's letting Joe Douglas run the football operations when Woody decides hey this shit's over wrap it up get him in here he's G he's getting in there Joe Joe is gonna not be able to do maybe what he wants to do but when he owner says hey it's an all-in season we did all this he's not missing a game get his butt in here and get his butt in here now that that's going to be the deciding factor in my opinion the way that the way this ends is that Woody just drops the hammer and says I want him in and I want him in now and that to me at some point should be what the Jets do right like You' got to Cave a little bit to get them in like you're all in to win this year find the common ground and get it done because this guy is a game wrecker he's a phenomenal player and he's going to help you win games this year I don't care about the cap down the line all that like like they have money they could easily work out a Band-Aid contract and get it done teams do it all the time the Browns just did it with Amari Cooper figure it out yeah uh the contract might not be what Joe wants but it might be what the Jets need it it's it's a win now season if whatever we have to do to make it work you do to make it work Joe's trying to get the best steal for the New York Jets that's his job right protect the Jets now and in the future and you know a GM's job is to help the team now and down the road whether here or not we've heard many GM say that throughout the years but when the owner says get it
