let's jump in the show and we have a very team specific setup we are going to have um in today's episode we're going to get to know Old Dominion talk about the key matchups uh what you may not know about the monarchs like maybe it was the their actual mascot is H is the monarchs I don't know but we are going to get to know the enemy Old Dominion Edition going into game one like I said less than 48 hours away uh I appreciate you guys joining us along we've had a phenomenal week and and some several really good shows we have an interview today as well with Dave Schultz who handles locked on Sun Belt so he is a bit of an expert in all things Sun belts there you go all right let's start here Old Dominion who are they well um one of the worst mascot names I feel like in all of college also one of the best uniform and color combinations but they're a team that I've told you repeatedly is coming into the season uh looking for an upset obviously in week one and you're starting to see a little bit of line movement and I haven't seen anyone just blatantly or brazenly go out on a limb and say you know what South Carolina's on upset alert and I know that I teased the the start of the show with that spoiler alert I do not think they're on upset alert but there are some numbers that South Carolina fans should be at least aware of or a little bit concerned with when it comes to this team so Old Dominion a season ago you look back at the 2023 season um they went to a bowl game they had a lot of ups and downs they were very good at times also very very poor at times but they played 11 of their of their 13 total games including the bowl game um they were one score games that is an NCAA record it's never happened in a single season before 11 of their 13 games were decided by seven points or less they went six and five in those games so it's kind of odd because usually you see this like you know Phil steel talks about this a lot that is not a metric that carries over usually year year to year so if you won a bunch of close games in one season kind of like Tennessee did a couple years ago usually the following year that doesn't really translate and you don't have four or five just you know um the same amount of winds you you had the year before in that in that wind column because you know teams get better obviously and it's also a situation I think where like going into this year there's no chance that they're going to have that many close games again you've only seen one team that's ever had this happen for multiplayers in a rows Nebraska uh that being said they did it in wins and losses which is the bizarre part of it I still don't think it'll translate into this season but it does show you they are familiar with playing in close games and specifically they're familiar with playing Power for opponents in close games since they joined uh FBS right it was in 2014 they've only had one winning season since then it was a 10- win season in 2016 now that being said since Ricky ran uh has come in as the head coach there he has really turned this program around now in 2019 they went one- 10 they didn't even play in 2020 during the co year but since he came in in 2021 after those two seasons they've gone to a bowl game in two or three years they haven't finished with a winning record but they have won a lot of games and been really impressive in certain situations and I brought up the fact that they their track record against Power four opponents now it's not like an overwhelming wins ver losses especially under Ricky ran I think they're one and four uh against FBS teams in those um over the last uh yeah they're one and four in the last three years under him against Power four opponents you look at the last two seasons that they're one and three but two of those three losses are by three points or less I mean the win they had was over Virginia Tech in 2022 and then they lost to Virginia a couple weeks later by only two points last year they they went to wake and only lost by three points so like I said it is a team that has played very well against Power four opponents and usually on the road do they have the same makeup this year I don't know it's it's a a little bit of a skeleton um of the roster and and team from a season ago how does it match up with South Carolina honestly pretty favorable for for USC and and I'm not just saying that because we're locked on Gamecocks it's pretty favorable you look at the numbers they had um from a season ago they bring back the same quarterback Grant Wilson very very erratic very very up and down he's a junior um going into his fourth season I believe in college uh you know he's been a one-year start at ODU and he had some good moments but overall you know on the season 57% completion percentage only 17 passing touchdowns only eight to eight interceptions not a very explosive offense it was an offense that averaged less than 350 yards per game and ranked 95th in the country uh in the pass in the passing offense was ranked 101st less than 200 yards per game they didn't do a ton of things well uh on on offense a year ago you look at the major statistical categories points scored passing yards per game rushing yards per game total yards per game they ranked 88th or worse in three of those four and their highest was 75th in rushing offense not super ideal I honestly looking at the numbers it's hard to figure out how they won games um they were positive in the turnover margin by the end of the year but it was only by three right they were pretty pretty bad in penalties they were 113th in the country so they had a lot of self-inflicted wounds they were really bad at moving the football obviously I told you only had 350 yards per game um they were 80 I'm sorry they were uh outside of the top 100 in first downs gained per game I mean just not a ton they were 121st not a ton of positives from a season to go and then here's the thing that they're they're facing like a lot of teams are facing the Sun Belt and in group of five their best players are all gone they did get a transfer in on on the offensive line from Illinois they also got a uh a running back in from ru but a lot of their good players that that produced a season ago are gone because they got nil deals at at Power four programs and you had one that went off to Arizona for one of the receivers has gone to Arizona um you had another player that that left to go to Cal so a lot of new faces the storyline you're going to hear repeatedly is on defense and it's going to be obnoxious by maybe the first quarter uh I was talking to Aron Murray about this a couple days ago because he's going to be on the call for the game and he was kind of joking around like we're going to need some you know some kind of of fodder going into the second half because not expecting this to be close um and one of those stories you're going to hear a lot about is Jason Henderson we'll get to more about that in the second second part of the show but again how does this team match up with South Carolina the thing that you keep looking at and it's gon really it's true for both sides of the ball it's the offensive line versus the front seven of the other team's defense and I've told you this over and over and over again the Old Dominion offense and the offensive line was the worst not one of it was the worst in the country season ago they gave up 62 sacks uh and they gave up let's see here 10 105 tackles for loss both of those ranked dead last out of 134 teams in the country uh in at the FBS level I mean they are really bad so getting into the back field will be huge and stopping the run because I've told you before they don't have a ton of of uh what's the word I'm looking for here prowess throwing the football that is not what they're going to try to do they're going to try to be physical and run the football um so you have to make sure you are in the back field all day which I don't think should be a problem the other thing is when they do drop back i' I've said this again I think my hottest take of the of this game is this is a team that had 21 sacks a year ago for South Carolina just 21 they might be able to match a quarter to a third of that all right like like around five to to to seven sacks in this game alone that's how bad this offensive line was a year ago so can you get in the back field can you get plenty of plenty of stop can you can you disrupt things up front because I think if you can do that in any game that's huge but especially in this game that way you are you are putting them in in third and Longs you're getting them behind the change they are not going to be UNS script with whatever they're trying to do and you are going to disrupt not only the you know the offensive line and and the and the plays themselves but their entire game plan and play calling strategies because if you can allow them to be in third and eight or more second and 12 all those things getting stops on first downs they are not built to withstand that and they will be three and out all the time I told you the numbers on their on their punting they're going to be in a lot of first and 15s second and and 10 or more 113th in penalties a year ago you know like like dead last and and tackles for loss and sacks alive like they they move backwards almost as much as they move forward and that is not a recipe for Success against this team and this unit that I think is going to come out with a lot to prove for South Carolina um and that defense especially so those are the numbers for the offense uh like I said they have a running back Aaron Young that came in from Ruckers 121st in the country and first downs per game that's that's that's less than 17 total Grant Wilson was about as average as you can get um and they're just they're not built to to move the they don't have chunk plays they don't like and all of their best offensive weapons that did provide that like one the receiver that went to Arizona was averaging over 17 yards per catch that's gone so you should be able to limit them to very very little movement especially in the first half when the starters are in um and then that'll allow Lenor Sellers and Company to hopefully get ahead early and get off to a fast start because that's the thing I think South Carolina fans want to see more than anything is there there should be no questions at the end of this game you want to have zero questions in doubt about Lenor sellers about the offense about rocket Sanders like you want to have zero questions and doubt when this game is over so that is the first part of getting to know ODU we will get into the defense at some other matchups as well right after this well I think that one comes out today on Thursday it will come out every Thursday during the season all right so here's the other side of of this team and again let me give you some quick background on this ODU has been in FBS I believe right around 10 years only one winning season um you know they're not that far removed from a one and 10 year in in 2019 but they also feature one of the it's I feel like it's a feel-good story but it's also somehow come with some controversy they have a linebacker named Jason Henderson and I I said it in the last segment you will hear his name a bazillion times this weekend because he has finished first or second in the country in total tackles for each of the last years in three seasons in college he has 434 total tackles he like6 two years ago and 170 a year ago he finished one tackle short of uh of someone else who I think finished like 171 right there's also a lot of controversy that comes into this because he's been like an All-American he's been on watch list he's he's like the numbers are insane like like that amount of tackle just doesn't happen anymore and he still has another year to go however uh there was a podcast came out not too long ago I believe it was from CBS and they dove into the numbers on this and his tackle numbers at home versus on the road are like night and day like around like 18 to 22 tackles per game at home um versus on the road so I bring all that up it's not I don't think he's gonna have a big impact in the game he is a a little bit of a sealess celebrity in college football going into the season and I'm not diminishing his his accomplishments because he's done an incredible job so far but this is like the one storyline that they will have for ODU they will also talk about like I said you know getting to a bowl game into the last three years trying to get over the hump of getting a winning season with Ricky ran um and then the other part of it too is is that offensive line and trying to get the second winning season in program history but make no mistake about this guy he will be all over the field because he is a good college football player but I've seen several places and several different media platforms and Outlets talk about the biggest matchup in this game and it is him versus the offensive line for South Carolina that's absurd I will tell you this the biggest matchup I think that we want to see obviously want to see sellers perform well in in his first game as a true starter um want to see what the receiving core is going to look like want to see rocket Sanders you know like I'm not looking for a 200 yard day out of Rocket Sanders I would love to see 12 carries for 10 yards and two touchdowns you know what I mean I would like to see RPO plays that are are breaking from more than 10 to to 20 yards in chunks especially in the first half and getting out of head early that's what I want to see I think the thing from a position unit matchup that I'm most excited about South Carolina's offensive line like we've talked about all preseason has not been great um you know you are coming into the season fully healthy you've got eight guys that you're going to rotate you've got um you know one or two spots they they've talked about rotating those guys in and still settling in on who the like quote unquote starter would be but jiah Thompson in game one as a true freshman how does that look and are they gonna be able to push around what what should be an inferior defensive line like this is a group of five team that was just to be honest really bad a season ago um they weren't that bad against the Run they were 46 in the country and and and um what do you call it rush yards allowed they were really bad on pass defense uh and they were also really bad on on in total yards per game allowed in yards per play more importantly they were 85th in the country a year ago in in yard in plays of 10 or more yards so they were giving up chunk plays you know consistently all season long that's the thing I want to see the most on the stat sheet after this game sellers having a great day and being efficient and and having one or two you know big plays with with these new receivers that would be great great I already said the thing about rocket Sanders that would be great um would love to see something with Nick Harbor uh you know and but the other part of it is I I would love to see this the yards per carry and and the total amount of first downs I would love to see The Yards the total first downs be upwards of of of 28 to 30 and the yards per carry should be well over seven to eight yards that's just what it should be against this team they should be able to push this team around and and get like get down field whe whether it's like we talk about the pin and pull stuff from from Georgia Tech what they did to Florida State whatever the scheme is they should be able to be physical upfront and have several linemen getting to the second level and and and having guys bust open big plays I think that's one thing we talk about sea Elliott especially I I I can't wait to see that I think it'll come like regardless if it happens this Saturday but I want to see it this Saturday you should you should outside of the helmet comom situation being a completely new dimension to college football you should not be worried about the pace of of where you're scoring in the first half of this game especially you might not be 140 in the first quarter but it should be something similar to about you know you should be hopefully at least in the 20s by halftime it's not a defense that's going to stop a lot of people and then the other side of that for South Carolina on defense I don't want to I don't think they should give up more than 10 points in this game you know like I we told you about the line the other day it's still hovering around 20 and a half at most places it's 17 a half on ESPN bet um the total I believe is right around 50 to 52 and a half I I firmly believe that when this game is over South Carolina should cover the spread I know I told you how close ODU has played teams in the past especially in like power power five teams that's Virginia and Virginia sucks just point blank period they should win this game and not give up more than 14 points at all because this is not a talented or or or potent scoring offense that ODU has so that is what I'm most looking forward to like I said um I'll will give you a score prediction tomorrow and tomorrow's episode we will go through more matchups and breakdowns I also want to hear from y'all what are your biggest questions and things you want to see the most going into the game we'll have a very casual fun Friday episode for you tomorrow um and you know this this will be it's good to know who the the team you're playing is obviously because no one's familiar with ODU this will be a little bit more fruitful when it's actual opponent that that may have um a by our good buddy David Schultz who's having some issues with moving but kind enough to join us uh the week of uh it's game one right game one right off the bat you are the host of locked on Sunbelt um and for those of you that didn't know South Carolina wise uh Old Dominion the monarchs uh they are in the Sun Belt the fun belt as I would call it and uh it's a it's a conference that's seen a lot of change over the last couple years I think they were like MTSU was in there when I was in college um ton of fun teams still but getting to know the enemy this week old dominion right off the bat just give us an idea what the makeup of makeup is of this team well it is it's done a a 180 over the last couple years Ricky Ronnie a former corn quarterback brought in Kevin Decker the offensive coordinator from forom uh and so given South Carolina fans a little background uh Incarnate Word had the best offense in FCS points-wise uh in 2022 uh that coach is GJ Kenny's now in Texas state in um forom had the most offense in terms of yards uh in 2022 right and Kevin Decker was the offensive coordinator he brought the backup quarterback Grant Wilson uh to town uh and they had a pretty good season I think they only won two games a couple of years ago and last year they ended up in a bowl game they beat the cinjun at home they were in favor to do so they probably should have beaten wake uh they beat app State and they beat Georgia State on a last second play QB draw to go to a bowl game and you got Ricky Ronnie's wife uh jumping into his arms like pure agulation right it just winning a game and they did blow the bowl game they had a big lead in the bowl game and him in that game so I was pretty upset about it yeah right I may have as well and um and then they had a lot of guys I think took advantage of it it's one thing if you transfer out when you're two and 10 but I think a lot of guys transferred out because they got some nil deals running backs and wide receivers so we'll see uh they they go fast they they go fast the cinjun last year got caught looking at each other and the wide receivers uh were run run right past him so uh watching a lock on Gamecock you're telling me that the defense is is ahead of the offense uh that could be good in in this case um because they they you know be shocked don't be shocked when they're snapping it you know 20 and 25 seconds left on the play CL yeah it's it's it'll be interesting I think this year we've talked about this on a couple shows like where the helmet comom thing I think has almost slowed down uh a few teams early SMU had some trouble with it Florida state had a lot of trouble with it in their game so it be interesting to see that what you know if because like not every team is going to lean on that right like like we've seen the last couple years they hold up these weird signs with like four pictures on it you got to figure out whatever Rubik's Cube or visual of Rubik's Cube you get to solve there um you know it might be one of the situations that they they run something like that like you mentioned the fact that you lost a lot of people to the portal right um it's also a team that had they you know 11 of their 13 games a year ago were decided buy one score or less um and I believe five of them were wins six of them are losses that says a lot about just you know the the siveness I think of the team but like from the coaching standpoint how do you do you think they can repeat something like that year-over-year and what does it look like going up against an SEC foe well part the SEC Foe and U South Carolina fans won't know this but Sun Bel fans were so I covered the cinjun locally in Lafayette for many years so I'm a billy nip your Homer and one of the things about one of the things that Florida has in in their schedule this year is all this potential against it right it's not really who the who's on the team for that year it's uh you know a lot of these quarterbacks all right who's Tennessee's quarterback Mr nil we saw what happened with with Florida State uh and so the same thing was happening with me with South Carolina all right well now we got to replace spener Rattler right so we know who's who's the starting quarterback uh for South Carolina uh Ricky ronne told me when he came on the podcast that uh usually in the second year you know you get better in the offense right that's the quarterback but his wide receiver's left so because he gets rid of the ball he gets rid of the ball fast it took it took the Cajun three and a half quarters to figure out how to get to the quarterback yeah all right so I'm sure the defense uh Shane Beamer's defense is gonna you know stop them short right and see if we can you know Jam them you know where they can and get a rush on them because because they're going to try they're going to try to put up a lot of points they they are not a grind it out right football team they are going to want to put up a lot of points uh and shock uh and shock the opponent right yeah so listen I I understand um it's an incredible job you do over there like like covering the entire entire Conference of some because it is like it's it's honestly it's like it's one step up I almost I almost consider like this it's almost like the triaa version of maxtion like maxtion is like so much fun but we love maxtion because they've had their own Tuesday Wednesday night games forever but top to bottom the Sun Belt is a is a much better conference there's some really good teams in there I do think there's one storyline in particular and we'll close on this I appreciate you joining us again there's one storyline in particular that is the best and the funniest thing about this specific team and it's the linebacker and the controversy that apparently has come out about him and his fudging the numbers you know they got Kevin from the office over here um keeping up with his numbers from uh from from tackles but just just kind of tell tell our audience tell the South Carolina fans the name who they need to know this Old Dominion linebacker that has been in the news lately so it's Jason Henderson and he's had a great career at ODU and it's not like he's counting his own stats right some is counting for him he's not putting down oh I got that tackle someone else is doing it for him so he's had h a phenomenal career and I presume this is like you know official scores in minor league baseball well you know you got to take care of us somewhere along the way but you know if you you know if you if you help out the Fielder then you screw the pitcher and if you screw the pitcher you're if you help out the pitcher you're screwing the Fielder so I I think he's a very good linebacker he is outstanding uh oddly enough uh and due to covid but um if he breaks the record of the NCA alltime tackle leader uh he's breaking another Sun Bel guy Carlton Marshall I mean and this guy when I tell you Chris he's he might be 5'9 I don't think he right he is he's a he's a little dude was walk on at Troy and because he had a couple extra Seasons uh he he ended up leading the NCA in tackles he is currently the NCA tackle leader and that's uh who Jason is is going after but uh you're right we've had we the sun Bel has had some some great Seasons you know JMU got overshadowed because they couldn't go to a bowl game uh because they were making that jump uh you know app state has hosted game day JMU hosted a game day they had another classic game Georgia Southern a couple years ago Klay hton uh you know is getting mobbed uh on the field uh it is a lot of fun and yeah you know Texas State and App State got as good a shot as any to get to the playoff this year right because they're both supposed to be really good both of them um you want to talk about you know an odd story Texas state had all kinds of QB drama um coming and going but then they ended up with what's that TJ Finley right yeah TJ Finley waited to had an nil deal and then didn't get one and came back well it was a little bit long he was wait you know keeping the coaches on the line so the coach got to make a move so he gets the Arizona kid right he's got all the off the field problems and So within like two weeks Texas State didn't have a quarterback right yeah and then they then they land the defending Player of the Year in Jordan McLoud from JMU um and you got joy agular at App State you know I'm a big believer in this Chris and this is why I was you know wonder about you know South Carolina's quarterback if you have the same coach and the same quarterback in the next year I'm expecting big things from you right and that's what app state has uh that's what ODU has right grant Wilson and Ricky Ronnie are in the same situation that they were last year going on the road to take on South Carolina is obviously a tall task right I'm certainly not going to sit here and pick ODU although I wouldn't be surprised if if they do surprise them early the before South Carolina is able to make uh the adjustments that I'm I'm sure they will umon it is you're you're right it is the fun belt it is a lot of fun like the Henderson thing is just so wild like I can't wait to see how many tackles he gets because it's a road game it will be a home game those numbers a little bit different but just just so our audience understands it this is a kid that has a combined 356 tackles in the last two seasons just he had 186 in 2020 2022 and then 170 last year he was one tackle shy of the national lead then as well um we'll get you out of here on this man give me a prediction I know it's ear in the week we are recording this on a Monday night but give me a prediction uh the line weirdly enough has dropped by three points uh on one on one book from 20 and a half to 17 and a half what uh what's your final score prediction for South car ODU on Saturday oh goodness all right well I'm gonna ask you what are we expecting out of the South Carolina offense because again I probably like you I'm always wondering with the coaches you know if you have good defense well the defense played well in the scrimmage well did the defense play well or was the offense bad right and and watching lock on Gamecock I kind of felt like the offense was bad uh versus versus the good def defense was good but the offense was bad yeah I think I think the offense is gonna be better than people think I think Lenor cers is gonna be better than people think okay it'll be interesting seeing this one I think what they will try to probably do early is establish the Run probably through rpos and I think they're also going to try to get Rocket Sanders going a little bit and try to get him back to form that he had the past couple years at Arkansas so I I like Carolina um the biggest thing I'm looking forward to is is you have on on defense for South Carolina at the edge rushing position this is the team that only got around 20 21 sacks a year ago and ODU gave up I believe 61 in 13 games something like that so it's like you could theoretically get a quarter of the production that you had a season ago for South Carolina and Sachs right in this one game so I I I want to see Sellers and Sanders in RPO stuff or even just in in running the ball well early getting a push up front and then I also want to see um from the defensive end position or the Ed rge position I want to see some some sacks and at least and if you're not getting sacks on the stat sheet QB hurries QB knockdowns QB pressures like all of it matters affect the game early it does yes so what did you say the line Dro down to so it's weird because it's it's 20 and a half everywhere and then one one book ESPN bet I'm gonna talk about my third segment here dropped to 17 and a half okay I dude this this is probably going to be like the the recent bias Homer in me cover Carina but I'm going to take South Carolina because I think that it's a it's one of those things where with Beamer you're going to need to get off to a good start and get the big wins on and off the field like I mean like on the field obviously but with the boosters and everything like that as well and and get some some momentum in the season I'm gonna take South Carolina well I'll take South Carolina win but I'll take ODU to cover I'll go 3117 okay I love it I love it I'm not gonna give mine yet I'm gonna
