A Realistic Day in My Life at Brown University | Applied Math-Econ Major

[Music] welcome to another day Ina life of a Brown University student for all those who are new my name is Jay I'm a senior studying Applied Mathematics and economics on the mathematic find this tra a little shame to admit that I start my day 30 minutes before my first class cuz I know there's some really productive College YouTubers that start their days a lot earlier with a workout but this is just a candid look into my life here at Brown [Music] [Music] math 1010 is a class that rigorously explores the properties and behaviors of a function with a single real real variable key topics include limits continuity differentiation and integration and we provide a concrete and formal understanding of the concepts that we learned early in calculus the course also covers sequences series and emphasizes convergence and Divergence it's a proof-based course so it's not like you memorize a way to solve a problem you really have to understand and be fluid with the use of definitions and dilemas within the textbook to actually prove the questions or the statements that we are asked to prove [Music] this class was my one elective for this semester to take advantage of Brown's open curriculum as much as I can I try to take a course in one random subject or topic I've never explored before in this semester it happens to be Greek history and we're currently covering the end of the popian war super interesting class but I will say college level history classes have a lot of reading compared to the high school level thank you yeah we say anything Hiday or do you want to say anything Michael no look how beautiful the blossoms are [Music] man I'm usually absolutely famished by lunchtime because I never have breakfast so it's kind of like a forced fast in a way but anyway uh I usually like to have lunch with friends and catch up and have fun but I had some work to catch up on today so I decided to bring my meal back home and eat alone a little sad but I feel like once you get to College you kind of overcome the fear of eating alone I know in high school I was always worried about um just eating by myself and looking a little weird so can't wait for friends and whatnot but because in college everybody is so busy with their own lives and whatever they might have going on so you know a lot of people I feel like tend to eat alone and some even prefer so days like this when I have a lot of work backlogged um I kind of just have to do this and it's kind of become a natural routine at this point for all those who are entering College hopefully that doesn't scare you too much but yeah that's just my [Music] [Laughter] [Music] take labor econ is one of my mathematical economics classes that I need to take as a requirement currently we're trying out understand the relationship between education and wages using an analysis of identical twins the key idea here is that comparing wages and education differences between identical twins can help address the potential bias in conventional OS estimates due to unobserved factors like ability motivation correlated with education and earnings some of the readings in class explored various approaches including cross reported education differences as an instrumental variable to try to isolate the causal effect of education on wages so done with classes for the day I usually head right over to the Rockefeller library to go review the class material from the day and start or wrap up whatever problem sets I have due for the week this video was actually shot about 3 weeks out from finals so I was more focused on preparing for those exams than my actual problem sets one of my classes I felt so uneasy in that I was reviewing the class material from the first chapter so I had an entire semester's worth of content to review in 3 weeks though that might not sound like a lot but the final exam actually only covered the latter half of the semester given its breath of content but I felt like I needed to fully understand the first half of the class much better in order to do well in the final a lot of content a lot of pressure a decent amount of stress but that's just how life is like here at Brown sometimes but really any other college campuses during finals I'd assume outside of school I've been researching time management to boost my productivity with limited hours each roommates eating and watching TV my two roommates Noah and Michael and I've been friends since the beginning of my time at Brown we all study relatively similar things except Michael also studies engineering and Noah did computer science instead of Applied math we all met through Club Ice Hockey so obviously a bulk of our time will spend watching hockey for those who know hockey I'm a small Washington caps fan and Michael's a devout Rangers Fan and we all know how that went down in the playoffs what are you doing why are you moving that thing are you likeing they [Music] [Music] [Music]
