No One Realizes What Drake Maye is Doing.. | New England Patriots

all right man as we all know the preseason is fully underway we've gotten to see a lot of guys play over the past couple weeks that we were really excited to watch and one of those guys for me has definitely been that guy Drake May and just recently we got to see him play a lot more against the Philadelphia Eagles and a b completely honest with you I know he didn't play perfect but I do think he showed a ton of flashes and he really did show why the Patriots took him where they did he's going to have to work out some Kinks but man the flashes are there and he has all the potential in the world to be a really good quarterback he just needs the Patriots to keep trying to get Talent around him and to keep trying to develop him and I think he has a chance to be something special so I wanted to go into the last game that he played in and break down the things that he did well so without further Ado let's go ahead and jump right into it on the first play right here it's pretty simple all the Patriots are running is a little smash concept up top so you got a flat with a corner on top of it and Drake May is just reading this high to low and he's looking at this side of the field first this side of the field first high low and then on the back side all you have is a hitch with a big over the top of it with a swing from your running back so Drake May is really reading it high low on this side of the field here then he's coming to his dig three four to the hitch and then five to the swing full field read and he actually does a pretty good job going through his progressions here it's currently third down you need some yardage to get the first watch what Drake May does right here he takes his drop he's looking at this side of the field as you can see but the Eagles do a good job covering this up they have this Defender driving down on the flat they have this Defender sitting over the top for this corner routee so right when Drake May sees if they have one over one he has to come off of that because they're not open you see him pop his feet to the other side of the field brings his eyes here he sees the he sees the flat Defenders driving down on this hitch which means he's going to have this window to throw into right here and man oh man does he rip it in there boom ball right on the receiver's chest and it allows the Patriots to get a big time first down it's really good to see these young receivers like Jaylen pul and Javon Baker getting involved early and you see Drake right here you see he looks at the top of the screen doesn't like it immediately flips his hips to the other side of the field sees it rips it right on the money great catch great throw first down next play here this is an outstanding job by Drake may this this is exactly why you like to draft guys like him all the Patriots are running here is they're getting a little play action and Drake May is rolling out this way and they're just running a three levels concept so they have the tight end sneaking out in the flat they have this receiver coming out slow slow slow and then getting out on top of it and they have this receiver coming over on a deep Crosser and then this guy is just going to run off to try to open up space in this area of the field so you can throw this high low one to the Deep two here three here but what I love about this play right here is what you have to realize is this flat is your hot so if there's somebody coming off the edge and you turn around out of this play action and they're there you got to find a way to get the ball out to this guy immediately and Drake May does an outstanding job to be able to do that watch him right here he gets the play action right when he gets his eyes around Nolan Smith is already in his face a lot of quarterbacks are either going to try to outrun him and probably take a sack or they're going to get the ball batted down because they can't contort their body to get the ball around him but Drake May is athletic enough to be able to make something happen right here he's able to jump in the air and still get the ball out around Nolan Smith and put it right on the tight end to allow his guy to go get some yardage I love to see his quick reaction time right here to be able to do this and at the same time be able to contort his body in this way cuz that is just really high level stuff right there and that's the talent that you want out of a top three draft pick I know it only ended up being five yards but this play that Drake May made right here was the difference between gaining five yards and losing five or six yards and that makes a total difference in how successful a drive is amazing job next play here this is another great job by Drake May in my opinion all the Patriots are running is they have a go by this outside receiver they have a Crosser here they have a drag underneath it and they have a deeper poess route behind everything and Drake May is literally reading it based off this if it's one high safety if this guy spins away and it's just him in the middle try to take him away with your eyes and you can take this go route one-on-one with your guy out here if not come back and read this high to low and then come to your post and see if that's open now what you're going to see happen here is the Eagles show it pretty easily and Drake May notices it immediately boom this safety is spinning over the top it's one high you have one on-one man coverage with a guy you trust out here so Drake May is going to try to throw it out there and let his guy go make a play and he actually gives him a really really good ball he's just got to find a way to catch that football hits him right in the hands he's got to find a way to catch that football watch Drake May right here watch his eyes he's going to see that safety drift towards the middle and right when he sees that boom he's looking at the safety right when he saw that safety drift towards the middle he took his eyes straight out here to the go hit his back foot Hitch got the ball out put the ball right in his hands the guy just has to find a way to come down with that catch now the big issue right here is really just Javon Baker not giving Drake May any room to throw this football he tries to take his release and he takes it outside and he allows this DB to keep driving him driving him towards the sideline so by the time Drake May throws that ball Javon Baker is right here down the sideline and it doesn't give May enough space to be able to put that ball in a bucket you really want to be around right here so you have room to be able to lead you outside but Javon Baker doesn't give Drake May that which makes the throw a lot harder and makes the catch a lot harder but I really do think this still could have been a big gain I think Javon Baker has to find a way to come down with that catch good job by Drake May once again next play here I like this from Drake May once again the Patriots are currently in empty and all they're running right here is this guy is coming on a little sit route so if you have somebody Blitz from this side of the field this guy is replacing him get the ball out now to him and that's exactly what Drake May does I would like to see him be a little bit more confident in his decision but I like that he was able to see the Blitz and get the ball out quick because that's pretty high level stuff he sees it out of the corner of his eye right when he sees that guy Blitz he knows he has a hitch replacing it so get the ball out try to get in your guys hands and gain a couple yards Javon Baker just has to come down with this ball now I know Drake May takes a second to get the ball out it's a little bit off Target but I still think Javon Baker has to catch this football I like it from Drake may watch right here he's going to see the guy Blitz out his peripheral right when he sees it quick game ball little bit High Javon beaker's a little bit scared of contact leads to an incompletion next play here just running a little Zone read Drake May showing that he can be athletic when he needs to be running back coming here Drake May reading the end if they squeeze we're pulling and getting out if they stay outside we're giving it and letting our running back go to work and what you're going to see happen right here is obviously the end squeezes down when you see this end squeeze down it's a pull all day every day and that allows Drake May to get outside and go score a touchdown great stuff I think we're in see this a little bit more than people realize you got to be able to keep the defense off guard and Drake May has the athleticism to be able to do that touchdown Patriots next play here another amazing throw and C by Drake may all the Patriots are running is Javon Baker up here has a deep post he's going to come out stick it outside outside and then stick in and all Drake May is reading is this safety right here if he flat foots at all we're throwing this post over the top one-on-one coverage you like your got to win one-on-one but if he drops back at all you come to your curl here and then to your other curl here and then to your check down but what you're going to see happen right here is immediately at the snap of the ball the safety is going to flat foot boom this safety isn't drifting at all he's looking over at this receiver number three over here or right here the tight end and he is driving on whatever this guy comes and sits down on so Drake May sees that and he knows he has Javon Baker one-on-one coverage with leverage inside and he actually gives a ball that you really can't ask more out of puts it right on him he's got to find a way to come down with this catch I know he had to dive for it but it hits him right in the hands right in the chest and the ground kind of knocks it out watch Drake may watch his footwork right here he's going to look at that safety Ronnie sees it ball right on the money Javon Baker has to come down with that catch I like to see his footwork right here he feels pressure from his backside so he's going to step over step over step up keep your eyes down field flick the ball out there easily puts the ball out there 50 yards that's you just got to come down with that catch should have been a huge huge gain so overall I think he showed us a lot of flashes that we really wanted to see and he did a lot of good things as well outside of those flashes and I really think he is giving himself a chance to be the starter at the start of the season now he's not perfect like I said in the beginning of the video but he is doing the most he can with the talent on the field right now and that should be really really promising if you're a Patriots fan
