29TH. OF COURSE, ONE OF THE TOP RACES ON THE BALLOT THIS YEAR IS NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR. REPUBLICAN NOMINEE IN THIS RACE, MARK ROBINSON, MADE A CAMPAIGN STOP IN LEXINGTON TODAY AS HE WORKS TO BUILD UP SUPPORT AMONG UNDECIDED VOTERS AS WXII 12 CHRIS PETERSON REPORTS. MR. ROBINSON, THE CURRENT LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF NORTH CAROLINA, TALKED ABOUT SOME KEY ISSUES, AND HE DID ALSO TALK ABOUT SOME PROTESTERS WHO SHOWED UP OUTSIDE HIS EVENT TODAY. THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR'S TEAM USHERED HIM IN THROUGH A BACK ENTRANCE TO AVOID THE PROTESTERS. BOTH SIDES ACCUSE EACH OTHER OF SPREADING HATEFUL RHETORIC. THE FIRST THING YOU GOT TO DO REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR MARK ROBINSON, GREETED SUPPORTERS AT VILLAGE GRILL IN LEXINGTON, SHAKING HANDS AND TAKING PICTURES. WE WANT TO GET FOLKS TO COME OUT TO VOTE, MAKE SURE THAT THOSE FOLKS COME OUT TO VOTE. SO WE'RE JUST TRYING TO ENERGIZE OUR BASE, LETTING THEM KNOW WE CARE ABOUT THEM AND REALLY JUST WANTING TO SEE THEM. THE MOOD OUTSIDE WAS MUCH DIFFERENT AS ABOUT TWO DOZEN PROTESTERS GATHERED TO SHARE THAT THEY'RE UNHAPPY WITH ROBINSON'S STANCE ON ABORTION AND LGBTQ RIGHTS. REPUBLICANS LIKE MARK ROBINSON. THEY'VE GONE TOO LONG TO SPREAD THEIR HATE AROUND OUR COMMUNITIES. THEY'VE TORN FAMILIES APART FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS, SPREADING RHETORIC THAT ULTIMATELY JUST HARMS NORTH CAROLINIANS. YOU KNOW, WE WANT LEADERSHIP IN NORTH CAROLINA, AND WE DON'T FEEL THAT. MARK ROBINSON IS IT. WHAT IS IT EXACTLY THAT THEY HATE? SO MUCH ABOUT US? WHY DO THEY HATE US SO BAD? THEY HATE US BECAUSE WE LOVE AMERICA. DURING HIS SPEECH TO SUPPORTERS, ROBINSON TURNED THE TABLE, SAYING IT'S DEMOCRATS WHO ARE SPREADING HATE. THEY SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THE PEOPLE INSIDE AND REALIZE WHY THEY'RE INSIDE. THEY'RE NOT HERE TO SPREAD FALSE RUMORS ABOUT ME AND AND CONJECTURE. THEY'RE HERE BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE POLICIES THAT WE SUPPORT ON THIS SIDE OF THE AISLE WORK FOR ALL NORTH CAROLINIANS. THAT'S WHAT THIS RACE NEEDS TO BE ABOUT. WHAT WE'RE FINDING IS THAT ROBINSON'S FAVORABILITY NUMBERS ARE MUCH LOWER THAN TRUMP'S AMONG KEY GROUPS. JASON HUSSER IS A POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR AT ELON UNIVERSITY. HE SAYS THE ROBINSON CAMPAPAIGNS ON THE DEFENSIVE DUE TO HIS PAST STANCE ON ABORTION RIGHTS. IS THE CAMPAIGN GOING TO BE ABLE TO PIVOT IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEY'RE ABLE TO FOCUS ON ISSUES THAT NOT ABORTION? THAT'S NOT LGBT RELATED ISSUES? THERE WOULD BE MORE MAINSTREAM BREAD AND BUTTER ISSUES THAT REPUBLICANS HAVE DONE WELL ON TRADITIONALLY, ISSUES LIKE TAXES, ISSUES LIKE ECONOMIC GROWTH OR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT.
