TONIGHT WE'RE HEARING FROM KIDS SWELTERING GETTING FRUSTRATED IN THE CLASSROOM EDITOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS CLOSING EARLY BOTH YESTERDAY AND TODAY AS MANY OF THE SCHOOL STILL LACK WORKING AIR CONDITIONING. TONIGHT, 7 NEWS DETROIT REPORTER SARAH MICHAELS. >> IS RAISING THE VOICE OF A TEACHER WHO WORKS IN THE DISTRICT SHARING HOW CHALLENGING IT IS FOR SOME STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS TO START THIS SCHOOL YEAR IN THIS HEAT. >> A TEACHER HERE AT GARDNER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TELLS ME THAT ON A DAY LIKE TODAY, IT IS 80 SOME DEGREES INSIDE OF THEIR CLASSROOM. HE SAYS THAT THAT EXCESSIVE HEAT GRATES, A LOT OF TIRED AND AT TIMES FRUSTRATED STUDENTS HAS THIS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM THE LAST COUPLE OF DECADES THAT YOU'VE BEEN WORKING? >> IT FEELS LIKE IT HAS INCREASED. CERTAINLY IT IS A PROBLEM PARTICULAR, THE OLDER BUILDINGS. FRANK DONNER HAS BEEN TEACHING WITH DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR DECADES. >> THIS YEAR, HE'S A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER HERE AT GARDNER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. JUST ONE OF THE DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS HAD TO HAVE HALF DAYS. THE FIRST 2 DAYS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR DUE TO THIS EXCESSIVE HEAT NO WORKING AIR CONDITIONING. IT REALLY SLOWS THINGS DOWN FOR OUR STUDENTS. THEY ARE DEFINITELY PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR NEEDS AS FAR AS ANY BREATHING CONCERNS. >> THEY'RE JUST WAY MORE TIRED, HARD TO CONCENTRATE. COURSE, WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE IT COMFORTABLE FOR THEM. SO THERE'S A LOT OF BATHROOM BREAK. A LOT OF WATER BREAKS THAT LEAD. A LOT OF BATHROOM BREAKS. JUST A LOT OF DISRUPTIONS TO OUR SCHEDULE. >> UNFORTUNATELY DONNER TELLS ME THAT THEIR SCHOOL YEARS OFF TO A CHALLENGING START. IT'S NOT JUST THE KIDS WHO SUFFER INSIDE OF THE HOT CLASSROOM. IT IS THE EDUCATORS AS WELL. >> EXTRA TAXING AND TIRING JUST DAY TO DAY THINGS TAKE A LOT LONGER WHEN IT'S THIS HOT. I KNOW I CERTAINLY WORK WITH PEOPLE THAT HAVE HEALTH CONDITIONS THAT ARE EXACERBATED BY THE SORT OF WEATHER. >> THAT A HOTTER CLASSROOM DECREASES LEARNING. EVEN JUST A ONE DEGREE HOTTER TEMPERATURE INSIDE A SCHOOL FOR AN ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR RESULTED IN LEARNING DROPPING BY ONE PERCENT FOR THAT YEAR. DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS ANNOUNCED THEIR PLANS TO GET WORKING AC FOR ALL BUT 10 OF THEIR SCHOOLS AND THE NEXT 5 YEARS, DONNER SAYS WHEN THAT COOL AIR FINALLY DOES ARRIVE. SO WILL A HAPPIER MORE PRODUCTIVE CLASSROOM. MOVING FORWARD, ALL OF OUR BUILDINGS NEED TO BE UPDATED WITH CONTEMPORARY, NOT JUST AIR CONDITIONING AIR FILTRATION AND HEATING SYSTEMS TO MAKE SURE THAT >> ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF MEMBERS ARE ABLE TO BE HEALTHY. DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS SENT OUT AN E-MAIL SAYING THAT THEIR SCHOOL SCHEDULE RETURN TO NORMAL ON WEDNESDAY. >> HOWEVER, IT IS EXPECTED TO BE IN
