Jacoby Brissett Named Starting QB, Not Drake Maye || Foxboro Rush Ep. 53

you know what time it is hit Travis's music welcome into foxb rush I am Keegan steel that is Shawn Maguire and Sean cesson digital takeover that's right Keegan I'm I'm used to doing this with someone that's Wears Like A much tighter graphic t-shirt so this is it's going to take a minute to kind of get used to but I think uh I think we'll be all right no pokies over here I wore the flannel it's football season got to got to cover up the chest uh we got a great show lined up for you guys gerod Mayo named a starting quarterback on Thursday the Patriots did some roster shuffling we'll get into that and in an Ode To Our Roots we're turning a Ness and digital staple into a a segment on today's show so you won't want to miss that uh Sean we're going to get right into it we're going to talk gerro Mayo talk quarterbacks uh gerro you were down there this morning he named his starting quarterback in a very brief press conference uh so we're we're going to go to that see what gerod Mayo had to say about the quarterbacks yeah good morning friends um you know just like I told you guys a few days ago there was a you know it's a process uh as far as selecting who the starting quarterback is uh we have decided or I have decided that jacobe brette will be our starting quarterback uh this season now in saying that as an organization we're 100% behind jacobe there is no um you know you got a guy right here you got a guy right there we're 100% behind jacobe and um I I had an opportunity to talk to Drake I had an opportunity to talk to jacobe separately and also to together um and I feel like we're all on the same page from an organizational perspective you said you had the decision and it was your decision what ultimately LED you to Jacob per yeah there are a lot of factors uh that led to this choice I think you know the hard part is thinking in the short term and the long term at the same time um as an organization though we feel like jacobe gives us our best chance to win right now this season no possibility I don't I don't want to get into hypotheticals um you know we can't go into the season saying well he's going to go x amount of weeks like look as long as job's going out there performing the way that we all have confidence in him doing uh he'll be our quarterback this season and that we didn't cut that off that was the full press conference that was that was it he had people wake up at 6:00 a.m. go down to Gillette like Shawn did like I said earlier so Sean you were down there obviously you heard the entire press conference you were in the locker room tell us a little bit about what saw down there today yeah I think the thing that kind of stuck out to me was he was kind of pumping the breaks on uh the Drake May eventual takeover um from how I took it and I think when you look at the decision like it makes sense it really does it makes sense for the Patriots I completely agree with it and I say that despite the fact that Drake May outplayed jacobe brassette um it's just Drake showed such encouraging signs really all all preseason all training camp um you look at the footwork you look at the uh prog uh the process processing all that sort of thing he talked today and he said how like the verbage is really kind of the thing that's um is the biggest difference from when he entered day one to now and he just feels so much more comfortable in the Huddle you know he said that himself so um you say all that but you know I just keep going back to the fact that like this is the best decision for the long term and because of you know you can't you can't make Drake any worse by putting him on the bench for a few weeks and you know I I think all the progress that we just talked about that I just mentioned that we've seen you know they could halt that in a hurry and that's because of a lot of that has to do with because of the things that are around Drake you know the offensive line we we've talked so much about that and so you know now this kind of gives Drake a chance to you know he gets to see NFL defenses on tape you know when jacobe is going against them he kind of gets to see jacobe go through the game day operation um he gets to see all that and hopefully at the same time you know the offensive line improves you know they start to gel they're and you're not putting kind of the rookie quarterback you know in a savior sort of situation um and gives him some time so I also do want to like say like all of this comes back to Drake right it it all does but jacobe as we saw during Camp I mean he he's an elevated quarterback for the Patriots over the last few years you know he had he has zip on the ball he he throws with accuracy he knows the offense you know they it is going to be a better quarterback situation in in New England now with jacobe um than it was with you know M Jones and those guys before him so I I just I I know it everything goes back to Drake um but you know I I think this was a right decision yeah and for the lack of a better term it's like you don't want to give him any excuses and talking about Drake here by throwing him out there week one where he didn't start any of the preseason games obviously he came in relief and all those and then expecting him to go out and start and ele Elevate his teammates and to make sure that everything is going you know right around him I don't think it's fair obviously you draft a guy at number three he's the future of the franchise and he's going to be the starter but right now putting him in a situation where people would expect him to fail isn't fair and I I think that's why the decision was made here and we heard Gerard say it was it even a week ago saying that Drake outperformed Jobe during the preseason Monday okay it was on Monday right so but did he outperform him during training camp throughout the entirety of training camp I don't think so me and Shawn were both down there uh Shawn obviously almost every day was down there but I wouldn't say that Drake was Far and Away the better quarterback throughout the entirety of Camp I would say he made a strong push at the end and just because the season starts now doesn't mean this competition ends I think it's going to continue into the season during practices throughout the season you're going to see Drake we won't see it because they won't let us see it but Drake's gonna get first team reps he's going to continue to work with the ones and that's when we'll see if he can push him then I think that's when the Patriots are going to make the decision that you know this is what's best for the the the team and for the future of the team because right now if they lose four or five straight games let's say they lose five out of the first six I don't think the world's falling because we all knew they were going to lose a lot of football games this year you can lose with jacobe when you start racking up losses with Drake then you're starting to feel feel the pressure a little bit so I think they're buying themselves a little bit of time but they're also buying Drake May time allowing him to uh get comfortable with the system and really just let it rip once he is elevated into that role mhm yeah and you just you kind of just touched on it too and I think it is a good point you know what we saw the last I don't know let's call it 10 days two weeks if you even want to give it to him um you know Drake he made a push and he performed he performed better in the preseason games you know when the lights were on he was better A lot of that did come down to the fact that jacobe wasn't playing a ton I mean he got one Series in the um in the preseason finale their Day Drake goes out looks great um you know playing behind the I guess starting offensive line the top offensive line is probably the way we should phrase it um so I I think like that recency bias sort of thing is kind of it weighs a little bit but you're right you know we didn't we didn't have the privilege of seeing what was going on in the meeting in the meeting rooms you know we didn't get to see the all the behind the scenes stuff and certainly I guess during the first week or two you know you saw Drake timid you know he's he was taken you know checkdown after checkdown he wasn't he really was just taking what the defense gives him so you know it's like it was such a condensed amount of time that he made this run that it kind of it's like that recency bias sort of thing but yes I I definitely agree you know we're we're in the same position here we think that jacobe should be the starter and you know Drake should have time to develop yeah you don't you don't want to react you want to respond to the things that you're seeing but making a quick reaction is not going to help anybody in the long term so you know we both agree on that but I think one thing that maybe we might feel a bit differently than others is how gerod Mayo has handled this whole situ with gerro it's the decisions he's made I think have been correct because he has been enough to admit this is what I thought going in that changes we're going to we're going to Pivot but with the media when when we're down there and with everybody else the question is like why you why are you saying this why are you doing this and when he is giving you the answers he's changing them and then when he's not giving you the answers they're easy answers that you're throwing him softballs and he's not hitting them and you're wondering like is it is he nervous like what's going on I I've been kind of confused by the way he's handled it I know you know me and you have talked about it a little bit it's been it's been confusing to say the least so you know what have you seen in totality from gerro Over the first you know month and a half that he's been coaching this team yeah I mean I kind of wanted like you know I wanted to Rack my brain and really think about everything and how it played out because you know it was gerro that came out and called jaob brassette qb1 and then he gave jacobe all the first team Reps for you know two plus weeks and then he gave Drake six preseason reps with you know in the preseason opener and then he comes out and um you know Drake doesn't get anything against the Eagles and the the Eagles starters in the joint practice Yeah and then Drake plays well against Eagles backups and then you know Mayo comes out after that and he reopens the door you know he is the one that reopens the door and said oh yeah the quarterback competition isn't over at that point like it was to me it was set in stone I it was done like you're not going to give a guy one guy you know two weeks of first team reps the other guy zero and then still kind of think back to that and you know call it a competition but then it just it continued you know then he he gave you know he comes out again on Monday three days you know we're recording this on Thursday Monday three days ago he was the one that said that Drake outperformed jacobe and that was like the real like oh my God like you really stepped in that like because we knew that this was the eventual you know this is how it's going to play out this is how it's was going to play out probably since day one certainly since you know day 14 or whatever you know after two weeks and so for him to say that like a week before he was going to have to make this decision was just to me surprising and and I get like the fact you know we hear like the James White thing and I know we talked about this earlier James White comes out and he's like no it makes sense you know because gerro is talking so much about you know the veteran aspect that jacobe brings and all the behind the scenes sorts of things that jacobe brings and I get that but I I guess just the way it played out it just it it really didn't make sense to me and like you said he kept he like he he kept he kept the door open he kept the door open for Drake and then a week later he says that Drake outperformed him in the competition and then four days after that he's like well that doesn't really matter because jacobe is going to be the starter so I I just it just it's really hard to think of and it's it's ALS like kind of one of those things where as a as a fan base you know New England as a fan base and speaking specifically from like a media perspective like we we've been asking the coach to come out and be more transparent about things for two decades but then like you know this comes down to it and it's like ah maybe you're a little too transparent we're starting to see why bill bich was so about exactly there's there's no positives to it really it's cuz like you said you don't say enough and then you say too much there's really no but from our point of view I think there is an in and you you got to find it so like you were saying and I one of the big things that I will say too you say that he scrambled to kind of keep the door open I think the door was closed and then he kicked it open and then he went to go close it and lock it again it made no sense that's that's what was so confusing and this isn't the first time he's done it either earlier in the offseason we you know we're going to burn some cash they don't they didn't burn any cash they have a lot of cash left over and it's sitting you know underneath Robert Craft's mattress so so this is something that we've seen him do throughout the offseason now throughout the early portion of the season and you wonder if it's going to carry over if it does you might start to run into a little bit of trouble if it doesn't you know maybe he'll learn from it he is you know what's it eight months into the job there are going to be some learning curves but it hasn't been pretty to start I'll say that uh we're going to move into Patriots transactions so final roster was set on Tuesday on Wednesday obviously waiver claims Cuts all that fun stuff uh for us to talk about not for the guys who lost their job uh they made four claims offensive tackles deantre Jacobs Zachary Thomas a linebacker Curtis Jacobs and defensive tackle Eric Johnson I don't know if you've got anything on these guys but they were end of roster players elsewhere and they're going to come in and be end of roster players here I I wouldn't expect either one of the tackles to go and start uh and then obviously to open up spots for them the cuts the guys that we do know a lot about Jaylen rager Isaiah Balden Tristan Hill and Michael Jordan Jaylen rager and Isaiah Balden I would say were the the two most surprising Bolden because he was he looked like their top depth option on the interior on the in the secondary and then Jaylen rger is your kick returner so you got to find another guy to return kicks is that going to be Marcus Jones is going to be somebody else that you know maybe hasn't dealt with the injuries that Marcus Jones has uh what do you think about the cuts we'll start with the cuts because those are the guys that we've seen throughout Camp yeah I mean I don't think that I I think the Patriots were in a position where they lack such talent that like nothing was surprising right it's just it's kind of it's just kind of the way it is you know if you wanted to say anything was surprising I would actually say um you know when Jaylen rer was I guess first made the initial 53 and then he was waved and now he's back it sounds like on the practice squad I would say maybe that is like the most surprising to me um just to have him cut and have kaan booty still on the team um so I think that's maybe the most fising but I mean still we're not it's not like we're talking like you know oh my God this Patriots receiver group looks vastly different because Jaylen rer isn't there um and then you talk you know Shawn Wade maybe uh but there was just there was so much depth in that group anyway that they're going to have to make some tough decisions so I guess that might be one Kevin Harris uh or jich Hasty staying over Kevin Harris you know maybe that's another one that's a little bit of a surprise um especially you know we saw the really nice catch and run by Kevin Harris in the preseason finale it's not a Kevin Harris I've ever seen before that that came out of nowhere no but and we kind of say this you know I think it's he jichael Hasty brings a different you know skill set brings a different um aspect to the kind of to the running back room so you know that doesn't stand as a huge surprise either so I I wouldn't say that any Cuts really were like whoa like you know I really surprised by that yeah I one of the good things and there aren't very many about having a bad roster is the fact that no one really wants your leftovers so when they do go and cut all these guys they brought them all back in the practice squad we have to wait on Isaiah Balden is he going to get uh claimed on waivers you know we don't know but if he doesn't everybody that they've cut that they've wanted back they've broughten back the um Sam Roberts I believe Sam Roberts and bayy zappy are the only two players that have signed elsewhere um bayy zappy was never coming back yeah I don't think Sam Roberts is some huge you know loss no offense to Sam Roberts but in totality you're able to keep the guys you've been working with throughout the summer you know a lot of them you worked with them last year throughout the end of the year and you're able to continue working with them with a guy like Isaiah Balden think you know he's on his way to becoming a contributor and on defense you know the guys they cut on defense aren't bums this is a good defense and Isaiah Balden can contribute in a lot of different ways obviously on special teams but that's a versatile cornerback that you don't really have outside of Jonathan Jones a lot of guys are they either play inside or they play outside and Isaiah Balden brought a little bit of that so if he's able to stay on the practice squad I wouldn't be surprised if him and rager are the early elevations you get two a week you bring them both up have the extra cornerback and then have a kick returner that you don't really have to worry about so uh we'll see as things move along I think they're going to be more Cuts they're going to be more claims it's it's really difficult to figure out what this team's deal is in terms of these four claims because you added two offensive lineman you only cut one so now you have 10 and vidan low is hurt right now yep City so is hurt right now so Nick leverett's on the starting offensive line so it you know once these guys come back once a Cole strange comes back are you you just going to go and cut these two guys you claimed where you had to go cut jayen rager it's it it hasn't been a great situation overall for Elliot wolf and I think that kind of leads into what we're going to talk about next which is you know who's had a good summer who hasn't had a good summer who do we expect to have a good season who do we not expect to have a good season and I'll let you set it up Sean because this is your brainchild this is the nessen digital this is our bread and butter this is what we do over on the on the com so set it up for us Sean yeah I mean so what we've been doing the last you know throughout the preseason and you know for years at this point is you know a studs and Duds we do it for each preseason game we've done it for a lot of games um it's been something that we really like to do so we're turning that into vodcast form at this point and um I'll start you know since you got you just teed up the Elliot wolf sort of uh thing I'll I'll start it off I'm professional host by the way that's right that's right that was a nice little transition there um who needs George right um but first dud I'm going to go with is I'm going to go with Elliot wolf I don't think he had a very good uh starts this season you know preseason I don't think it's going to look any better once the season rolls around and everyone knows where I'm going with this you know where I'm going with this the offensive line is just there it is it it's it's scary like it's it's really concerning and the fact that you have a rookie quarterback who is more or less hamstring hamstrung um by the offensive line in front of him you know the Patriots didn't want to play Drake May in the preseason because of the offensive line um the offensive line depth and you I have a feeling that is kind of playing a big role right now too as to why they're not going to start him and you know maybe eventually um when they when he does Play It's because the offensive line looks better but I there's just Elliot W came out and it was like immediately it was just it seemed like they put way too many eggs in different baskets when it came to Chuck aor for a former right tackle coming in hopefully playing left tackle as well as Kaden Wallace you know a fourth round rookie um sorry fourth round second round third round third round appreciate in the middle that's right um third round rookie played right tackle in college and you know Elliot wolf came out on draft night he's like you know we feel really confident that he can make the switch over to left tackle we haven't seen a ton of that you know we haven't seen a ton of that and it's not on I don't want to say it's on Kaden Wallace again he he's he's a rookie he's making a change to not only the pros but he's making it I guess a position change um and so I just I have a feeling like we already know that's been a big storyline throughout Camp I just can't help but think like that is going to be the storyline the season long storyline we're here every single week talking about you know how vidan low or Chuck sakor for or someone is in this Duds category because of how they performed in week one week you know through week 15 you know I I I think this is going to be a full uh a full season long sort of thing and that's that's on Elliot wolf there's just there's no way around it like for them to go about you know such an important position like left tackle the way they did it's just I I can't comprehend it yeah I will play Devil's Advocate a little bit because I do think if you look at the draft you know everybody he drafted made the roster plus an undrafted free agent and Del pentis so I wouldn't call them hits just yet but you're you see a little bit out of Drake may people are really excited about what he's going to bring Jaylen pulk has looked awesome Kaden Wallace obviously maybe not so much but in the middle Laden Robinson looks like he's going to be a starter and Marcel's dial made this defense which is impressive Jem Bell's gonna be your number three tight end so he's I would say he had a pretty good start to the draft from what it looks like from now but what did he do to set them set that class up for Success what did he put around them and it really doesn't look like much right now and I it all comes back to the Tackle Spot where if you were able to just go out and find spot starters or at the very least bring in some guys who could compete you know a Kellen D was never going to compete for a starting spot Vian low sticking at left tackle is not something I don't think anybody expected going into camp and that's obviously what happened before his injury so I would have liked to see a little bit more to you know Aid in the development of his younger players but wa to be seen you know on the Elliot wolf train uh I'll come at you with another dud Marte mapu and I hate doing this because he's been hurt he just hasn't played kick him when he's down I I feel terrible about it I really do but it's one of those things where you expected him to come in and really contribute on defense as a versatile piece and he just hasn't played and you've got guys that are coming in that look like they can fill those roles it was nice thinking that one guy could fill that safety linebacker role but Christian Ellis has stepped up and he made the roster Del Pettis undrafted free agent he made the roster Jaylen Hawkins has looked awesome as a as a free agent signing so what is his role when he does come back and with more players we heard Bill belich say it for years the second year is the biggest developmental year you really see the jump from Rookie to second year you see what these players are going to be I don't know if we're going to be able to see that out of Marte mapu is when is he going to be ready one and two when he does come back what is his role on the team so a lot of questions with him that I really calling him a dud isn't fair but his injury has really been a pain in the ass for the Patriots defense we sticking with them we'll throw we're sticking with the with the Duds yeah you gotta go with the dud I got one more I'm going tawon Thorton and I I'm just like you know the preseason is behind us training camp is behind us I am so surprised with how much we saw tawon thoron working with the starting offense did anybody see it coming I I truly don't like I've never seen someone go from is he even going to make the roster right to like all of a sudden he's he's like firmly entrenched with the starters and you know maybe down the line he loses that job um but certainly going into the week one I mean he's going to be a starting X for them and there's just no doubt about it and I think it's like maybe it's not fair to tawon Thorton but one I don't have high expectations for him and I could just very easily see this becoming another one of those you know season long storylines that like oh my God the Patriots have no receivers and all of a sudden tawon Thorton is like the billboard of the no receivers right and and so I just you know we'll see what jayen pul brings we'll see what Javon Baker brings you know they have a lot of EX exciting young guys you know Demario Douglas I think he going to have a great year but I do think that throughout the season we're going to be talking about the lack of receiver Talent they have and I could definitely see um you know tawon Thoren being like the poster child of that yeah tawan's one of those guys where he had a good first couple weeks so you would like to think you know maybe he's finally caught on but it's all gone downhill since then and I'm not going to act like it's been a disaster but there have been drops and his routes haven't looked as crisp he missed a few days with an injury and it's this is the same guy we've seen throughout his first two years he was never given the opportunity to really play as a rookie and when he did he looked all right and then in his second year he was a net zero I would say it wasn't like he was killing them but he definitely wasn't helping them you know he couple healthy scratches like this isn't a guy that you you would look at as he'll be a starter next year he's going to he's going to take that step forward so y you know maybe he will but I doubt it from what we've seen it's it's one step forward two steps back with him throughout his career uh but we don't want to be too negative right we've been negative for I don't know a half hour at this point let's let's talk about some a long season it's going to be a long season we're let's talk about some guys that we're looking forward to watching throughout this very long season I I'll start since you just ended with taekwan poor taekwan Keon white is a guy that you know I like to think that I saw it early but I think every likes to think that they saw it early maybe it's just that he's a really good football player and we all saw it Keon white looks like he's going to be maybe the most important player on this defense and that's a lot for a second-year player who was a rotational guy last year but with the absence of Matthew judon and Christian barmore no one's going to fill both of those roles but they're going to ask him at the same time to fill both of those roles he'll play as a five te and then he'll move all the way into a three Tech which is what those two guys did and we saw throughout the last preseason game where he played into the second half I don't think anybody was expecting that but they really moved him around and I think they wanted to see where can we maximize him as a player and I don't think you can find a spot where he isn't key on white and he doesn't look like a dominant force on the defensive line so I'm I'm expecting big things out of him I don't know what the sack totals are going to look like because he didn't have a ton last year but he had a ton of pressures and I think he's going to be a guy who's really disruptive on a defense where Demarcus Covington has said we're attacking offenses we're not going to sit back and keep people in front of us like maybe you saw throughout the middle years of Bill bich they want to attack they want to take the ball away they want to give their offense as many opportunities as possible to to go score so Keon White's a guy that I'm really looking forward to watching this year yeah and just quickly to kind of touch on that you talked about I'm just I'm so curious to see um you know how he changes from you know playing on the interior to playing off the edge um he can't I actually talked to him after one of the preseason games and he said how he prefers the interior because he feels like he's so much faster and kind kind of create more mismatches when he's on the interior especially like on third downs and those sorts of things so um yeah definitely couldn't agree more have a feeling it's gonna be a big year hit me with the second one oh moving on we are going I'm going with David Andrews and it's not the sexiest pick not a sexy pick at all not a sexy pick I know he you know he's he's very he's well known in New England like there's no doubt about it Patriots fans know who David Andrews is I don't know if you could go outside New England to any NFL General fan and be like do you know who Daven Andrews is and they would say yes I mean c again certainly not a sexy pick I don't know with that said I don't know if there's a more important player not only on the Patriots offense I don't know if there's a more important player on the Patriots team this season than David Andrews and a lot of that has to do with David Andrews really good at his job really good at his role Great Captain a lot of it also has to do with the depth they have behind him and it was so clear I mean fans who were watching preseason games saw The Botch snaps you know saw people just get sacked over and over didn't matter who it was either Nick Le Liam fornadel it was all yep you know um Antonio Mafi that was just a complete failure of an experiment trying to go from you know essentially from guard to Center he didn't stick there very long he didn't stick anywhere he's out that's true that's true he was he's gone um and then you just mentioned Nick lever and he's on the team you know it feels like he is kind of the backup at this point to David um but you know we saw some botch snaps with Drake May in the preseason finale so I don't know if there's like a bigger um like degree of separation I guess from one position to the next than there is from David Andrews to the backup center and so I just have a feeling like the Patriots are already in trouble on the offensive line if they lose David Andrews for any amount of time or if he misses a game or anything I think they are just royally like porked royally porked is Roy porked yeah I with that offensive line too it's we're starting to see something that every team goes through but the injuries they pile up on the offensive line and this unit's bad enough the the top five but if you start getting into you know Nick lever snapping the ball or trying to bring in a you know Brian Hudson is a guy they brought in on the practice squad if he ever has to play it's an undrafted rookie like there is negative depth on this team the the the top line is bad so there's no depth and uh I I think it's just it's a bad situation to be in where you have to rely on a 32-year-old center who's got one foot out the door he's talked openly about the fact that he's you know retirement is very much in the picture in the next couple of years you're relying on him to keep everything together not great so I do agree that he is a stud in the in terms of without him we're porked like you said so not a great spot to be in if you're the Patriots but we are being positive so let's stay positive with the last stud it's Jaylen pul we talked about him earlier maybe the most consistent player they've had on offense throughout the preseason I don't think I've ever seen a receiver in New England I'll say with when the ball's thrown his way it doesn't matter if a guy's draped on his back he's going to make the catch the Patriots haven't had that guy in 15 years you know what I mean like Julian edman always got open it Jaylen pul doesn't even need to get open you throw the ball near him he's going to catch it so I've been super impressed with him throughout the spring throughout the summer joint practices with the Eagles he was the best receiver on the field for sure I I've been really impressed with him I think he's going to take steps forward that you wouldn't expect out of a rookie to where at the end of the year everybody's talking about de Mario Douglas I think he's going to be your leading receiver this year I I really have been impressed by him so I think moving forward we'll see more Jaylen pul he's already kind of worked his way in with the starters by midseason he'll be a Bonafide starter no problem I think that's that's kind of the biggest thing that stands out to me is like when we get into week four and week five like if if KJ Osborne if tawon thoron like if those guys aren't aren't doing it we like you got to stop kind of um you know tapping on the breakes when it comes to jayen pul it was almost they kind of treated jayen pulk similar similarly to like Drake May and the fact that you know they really did hold him back they they held him back during preseason training camp um they held him back in preseason games and so it's like you know KJ Osborne nice signing nice veteran and all that sort of thing but like reliable a guy that you think you can rely on no doubt but like you know Elliot wolf this offseason said the the young guys are going to play and he is like the perfect example of like the young guys should play yeah and he's I said earlier like you know it doesn't matter if he gets open but he's been getting open too it's a somebody where in this offense where they're going to rely on a lot lot of crossers a lot of let's mix the defense up and get Guys open space to work we've seen that throughout the preseason you saw it against Carolina you saw it against Washington so I'm excited to see what can do in this offense specifically because I think a receiver who in Patriots terms I think he's similar to jacobe Meers where he's going to work underneath he's never going to take the top off the defense but if you can get him the ball you can rely on him and a quarter he's a quarterback's best friend and with a rookie who you hope is going to come in here you know before the middle of the season and end up as a starter that's what you need you wouldn't expect it out of a rookie but I think that's what you're going to find so those are our studs and Duds if you want more studs and Duds make sure to check out ness.com we've got him after every game it's going to be a fun year with the STS and Duds now let's move into some more negativity because that was too positive it it was too positive and we've been talking quarterbacks so we'll stick in the quarterback train I would like to make it very clear ma Jones is bad at football I don't care what he did in Jacksonville I don't care what he showed during the preseason he's the backup quarterback what he fraking do Mac Jones stinks and the Patriots were right to get rid of him I've seen way too much discourse Ma discourse is off my TL for further for further notice if I see it I'm blocking you and I'm reporting you you're going to mute ma Jones on I might have to but I I have to get your opinion because I've I've been anti- Max since day one there's a clip of me on the internet saying that I'm dead inside after they they drafted him because I didn't want him in the first place it made no sense to me but I I'd like to get your thoughts just ma Jones were the Patriots wrong to cut Mac Jones well I think that's like that's where we're gonna agree like I'm not going to come out and say like I was crying when M Jones was drafted I didn't cry but I was upset the fact that like this is becoming somewhat of a narrative and I it's one of those things it's on social media you have to take everything on social media with a pound of salt like so I completely I completely get that but the fact that it is even being like said because M Jones had a good preseason against guys that are no longer in the league like guys are working out of AutoZone not that there's anything wrong with that but Shout Out Auto Zone we got one free no free ads right um no but like those guys are no longer in the league and M Jones yeah he looked good with that he looked good against those guys he threw some nice accurate passes you know he has a lot of fun he was doing his dancing all that sort of thing but like for people to honestly even consider the fact that the Patriots made a mistake by that is is dumbfounding I can't like I just I cannot imagine watching the preseason finale when Drake and this play was called back because of CH a COR for anyway um positive start tackle baby that's right I cannot imagine watching the preseason finale when Drake May turns a broken play he's going to his left he hits KJ Osborne KJ Osborne makes a Defender Miss and scores a touchdown again called back but I cannot imagine watching that game and thinking like oh my God we passed on that we passed on we didn't draft Drake may like it it's just and it's not just that play obviously like you know you saw it a lot during camp and it's just when it comes to like the physical skill set and the physical tools I mean it's it's light years away MC Jones cannot hold Drake May's jock like it's just it it is that that's right and that's just that's the way it is and that's going to be the way it is for a decade at this point you know maybe longer than that so like good for ma Jones you know he went back to his mom's house did all that stuff not there's anything wrong with that either um you know he's back home he's we're saving a lot of MC Jones feelings we I don't we Sav tawan's feelings we don't need to save M Jones's feelings but like he looks better he he's going to maybe reset his career there's a very good chance he signs somewhere like as a free agent next year and maybe he's in a c quarterback one competition so good for him when it comes to that but like to even have any shred of thought that like that would be going on in New England right now is just insane to me I think there there's a lot made when we talk about Drake May in terms of you know if you start him right away look what happened to M Jones do we forget the fact that MC Jones had an okay rookie season the problem with M Jones is the fact that he couldn't Elevate anything around him so when the team continued to get worse because of the drafts that Bill bich had and we're not here to pile on Bill bich but when the team continued to get worse he got worse he's a product of his environment he's always been that way so when he was at Alabama and he was surrounded by 15 first round picks yeah he's going to look pretty damn good when he's in New England and two years post Brady and a team that Cam Newton helped kind of pull together throughout 2020 that had some pretty okay weapons yeah he looked good as a rookie and then it's been a steady decline since and now he's in Jacksonville he's in a system where Doug uh Peterson is what a top five quarterback coach in the NFL you know he comes from the Andy re tree yeah he's going to make the guy look okay in a preseason you know in three preseason games when he's playing Auto Zone workers like you said so I am not impressed by ma Jones I do not trust ma Jones i' hope I never have to watch ma Jones play football again unless it's in week five against the Patriots in London I think that would be incredible and if it is Mac Jones you have to play Drake may you can't play jacobe verset it's got to be Drake May versus MC Jones but that's off the table I think Trevor Lawrence stays healthy this year I hope I never have to watch M Jones throw a pass again we're moving on I can't stand to think about it anymore do you have one more thing I was going to say can we just go back to one thing I don't think we've talked about certainly on air about the Doug Peters in Patriots way comment yeah so I mean what a just a brutal look for the Patriots taking a shot and for a guy who historically he can say whatever he wants about the Patriots cuz he put what what was it 38 points against them in the Super Bowl so you know with Nick fos at quarterback so Doug Peterson can say whatever he wants I didn't even take offense to that because you know talk your sh1t right Doug Peterson I just I mean that's that's like when you think about like public comments like know public shots at the Patriots that is without a doubt up there as one of the worst I can remember I will say I feel like Bill bich kind of skirted those comments away because people were too scared to yeah talk about Bill Bel that way do we forget that gerod Mayo is like a pro bowl linebacker I wouldn't want to talk about donon Mayo's team like that either I get a firm handshake in the middle of the field for sure uh we're done with M Jones talk I think hopefully we don't have to talk about him for the rest of the season but we do want to talk some fantasy football we're coming in into Fantasy Draft season Ness and digital will have our draft at some point we haven't scheduled it it's it's a disaster whose fault is that kames anyway so we want to talk some fantasy football sleepers we've got a few uh I'll throw to Sean he'll give me his I'll give him one we'll go back and forth let's talk a little fantasy football Sean yeah I think when you think about fantasy um like sleepers I think it's always like the mid- round white outs that you're going to kind of get um you know I think T Higgins I I've seen that some people say that t Higgins was being draft in like the seventh is round I mean that just that feels like a no-brainer um you know rookie wide outs Xavier worthy I know you know you think he's way too he's like tawon Thoren coming out the shoulders they stress me out those little shoulders I don't know about him but I mean I could see him lighting it up in Kansas City um I think the high like the rookie receiver who I would be the highest on and I don't even know if like this considers a sleeper because I'm not exactly sure where he's being drafted um but I would go with ROM dun and I know you know you have such like a a split in rep you know not split in reps split in targets when it comes to that offense I you know the Chicago Bears are fantasy relevant for the first time in in my lifetime may I I don't I truly don't know Sexy Rexy grman was maybe their last fantasy relevant player I have never played fantasy football with the Bears being relevant let's I I think that's kind of like a fair a fair way to put it um and so I know there's a lot of targets and he'll be splitting with that but I just think that the Bears offense is just I I really think it's going to be really good and I think Caleb Williams is going to be good um you know and because of you know the fact that um Keenan Allen is over on his side and you have Cole KT taking you know uh defenses you know I don't know I guess kind of defenses defenses are interested in covering I can't think of the word right now um but you know they have going to draw attention away he that's thank you appreciate that um so you know when you have that sort of thing I I think he's going to lock into some really nice um some really nice situations I've got a couple sicko picks for you cuz I I went real real sleeper first one Deontay Johnson famously a fantasy nightmare last year I don't think he scored a touchdown in six years so you know Deontay Johnson the name is scary but he's in Carolina now yeah went there this off season I want to read off some stats about their targets last year Carolina Panthers Adam thielen 137 targets Jonathan Ming not a good football player 85 targets DJ CH no longer with the team 66 targets you're telling me uh I forgot his name for a second Deontay Johnson isn't going to get like 120 Targets in that offense I think he will I think if Bryce young can stay somewhat healthy you're looking at a decent like wide receiver four Flex guy and then Kyler Murray at quarterback the Cardinals have been like sneaky okay a little bit last year they were they were feisty I'll say they were in games last year and if he's healthy he's got Marvin Harrison he's got James Conor I think he's not a bad backup option or you know like if you end up in a some 12 team 14 Team league not a bad option a quarterback especially if you're in a um a best ball scenario where you're just looking for like I need one week out of this guy Kye Murray is definitely on the table there who I sorry I was going to say I just when I think about quarterback I cannot stop thinking about CJ St is that is that a me thing at this point so CJ strout and Jordan love are nightmares to me because like they could it could go up or down either way I really don't know Jordan love I I stayed away from our guy Mike Cole has 14 bets in on on Jordan love Futures that I good luck Mike I don't know but CJ strad scares me too that offense looks great on paper but I think they're due for regression I just each individual player I think is due for for some regression I do want one Patriot this is Foxboro rush so give me one Patriot that this is tough um one Patriot I wouldn't hate I think I'm going to go de Mario Douglas de Mario Douglas I I think he's just gonna catch a ton of passes yeah um I'm not I'm probably not spending anywhere higher than like a six round pick on De Mario Douglas um but he's one of those like if you feel pretty good about the two wide out like two wide outs you have yeah and he's just playing as like your flexx every week I think that's a I think he could go for like I don't know 70 catches and close to a thousand yards I I think I think it's even more than that I think he's like 85 catches he could get up to I and I do I'll give you one with ra Andre Stevenson in that offense with really no weapons around him I think he's going to be a Do-it all guy and in Alex Van Pelt offense obviously they're going to give him a ton of carries he's going to get a ton of targets like he always has if you trust him to stay healthy that's definitely an opt I don't think it's crazy to have him as you know your running back too uh really it's Hit or Miss if you're willing to take the swing I think that's it uh that's our time for today I've enjoyed it Sean I've also enjoyed it thank you for for joining me
