welcome to NBA today we had a lovely break I am so glad to be back in studio my girl Chan auma friendly faces beaming in from AAR senior writer Zack low front office Insider Bobby marks I'm Malika Andrews we got a little tan we did a little traveling had a big old party yeah little great August 24th it safe to say that it was an awesome month for us we hope it was for you all as well but it would be hard to top a one Mr Steph Curry's month and we'll tell you why after a heroic medal round to help Team USA win their fifth straight gold medal Steph Curry he agreed to a one-year 62.6 million extension with the Golden State Warriors it's according to our woge now Curry is under contract through the 2026 27 season which leads us to the obvious question that Steph he was asked on the Today's Show take a listen are you going to retire Golden State Warrior I hope so for sure I mean I've been there going into my 16th year yeah and uh I always said it's a it's a goal of mine to to finish my career uh you know with that organization that see me go through the ranks and and accomplish amazing things with you know Draymond I know Clay is not with us anymore but uh I want to keep winning obviously and I know you know we we have hopefully some some days ahead still doing that so definitely want to be there so it sounds like CH that if the Golden State Warriors are able to keep their heads above water here Steph is in it for the long haul but how confident are you that Golden State can do just that as long as Steph sounds just that confident I'm cool with the Golden State Warriors plan to really maximize on their Prime now the true thing is that the Warriors they've already done the hard thing they broke up the core they broke up the you know the the pieces together that built that dynasty but they did that for a reason to be able to have the right pieces for the future for the next what was it the contract next three years for Steph Curry but this is still a team that has a lot of issues right they're 15th in defensive rating they're ninth in offensive rating now they're still number two I believe in three-point makes which is largely because of Steph and adding buddy Hill helps to maintaining that consistency in their identity but they're going to have to find other stars or at least get starlike production from The Supporting Cast that has been the Hallmark for Golden State what is it strengthen numbers absolutely like this is my one caveat he was playing in the Olympics LeBron James had a teammate on that Squad Kevin Durant had his teammate on that Squad when we look at these generational icons that we've experienced the last generation Steph it's like where's his guy that go to they have to establish whether it's the collective or it's something within the next three years of player that can really push them back to Championship contention right because for many many years it was a Splash Brothers one two book it now Klay Thompson is with the Dallas Mavericks and when you look at this Warriors team as it's currently constructed it's not hard to see them sort of fighting in that sort of playin range but because we expect so much of golden state that somehow doesn't feel good enough so Zach do you think the days of maybe truly I mean truly being title contenders are they behind Stephan and the Warriors here probably it's going to take a home run a lightning strike something like the Spurs got with drafting kawh Leonard toward the end of Tim Duncan's Prime because this is what happens to Great Legends who stay with one team you win a lot and while you're winning a lot you draft at the bottom of the first round so you're probably not getting any stars there and then the core gets old and it's hard to transition from old to Great again while the old are still in the league and that's where the Warriors are they're a good team this is a good deep team in the Western Conference they could win a round if things go right they can even win two rounds but they're not a contender and you know what that can be okay it's not a reflection of Steph it's not necessarily a fraction of mismanagement though they'd surely like to have that James wisman pick back and they'll look for stars just like they look for Paul George they look for Lowry marinin they've got picks to trade they're not dead yet but it's going to take one home run lightning strike to get back toward the top and if they don't do it that's fine there's a good honor in being a one- team Legend on good teams for the rest of Steph's career right you kind of look at at Durk maybe as as a a person you think of Kobe Bryant most famously staying with the Lakers but the last couple of years of Kobe's career we all remember of course a 60-point game going out on a high note but those last couple of years were a little bit tough to watch so it's all good and fine as long as Steph thinks that it's good good and fine Bobby what does the realistic path forward look like now that golden state has Steph locked into this contract well Malik I think the big question is is Steph Curry content on just competing to get into the play every year certainly what they what happened last year and then losing to Sacramento because I think right now in early September when you look at the Western Conference there's probably seven teams that are better than Golden State right now and I think signing the extension eliminates the distraction something that would have been asked upon in in training camp as far as extending for another year certainly with the deadline coming up here but I'm not convinced and certainly I think they're similar to where the Lakers are they're a team that's good they're a 45 to 46 win team but they're we're not ready to put them up there in the top four or top five unless maybe we get Andrew Wiggins back from 2022 maybe the young players uh kaminga and Moody and and Pinsky take a huge jump in development this summer and we won't know that until this season starts well Bobby you can just come out here to La sit in my seat and host the show because you just segwayed us perfectly because Steph he was on his media tour out in New York it wasn't just the contract Chet that he was asked about we saw how fun it was right Stephen LeBron leading Team USA to Golden Paris well since Bobby brought up the Lakers Curry told People magazine quote hopefully there will be more experiences in the future and this is what raised people's intenna even if we're teammates or not even if we are teammates or not Bobby so since the Olympics had everybody I mean including us here on the show before our break talking about if we could see this in the NBA now it seems Steph is maybe leaving the door open with those comments should these two team up in the NBA before it's all said and done and how could that actually happen yeah I mean look LeBron James has a player option next year and be and can become a free agent you know I'm I'm not looking at it well how can they get him and how can they sign him he's made over $500 million on in his career and probably over ion uh career-wise uh you know lifetime here he could certainly opt out of his contract and go to Golden State and and finish out his career for the next two years playing with Steph Curry and and Draymond Green and Golden State wouldn't have to give up anybody he can go flat out there and sign out right here and certainly that would be intriguing here I don't I don't see it from a trade perspective here and I think that's going to be the interesting thing if if the Lakers are mediocre this year will LeBron James force the issue to get out of the lak out of Los Angeles next offseason see to me the big elephant in the room is how long will LeBron James want to play for because one thing I appreciate about both of these guys Steph Curry and LeBron James is no matter what you think about them whatever else they accomplish people believe that they're the best at what they do the best shooter we've ever seen and also you know whether you love LeBron or hate him you believe something completely about him so when you look at this Dynamic being teammates or not I mean is he speculating for the next Olympics or is he more talking about being teammates on the same Squad I don't know how long LeBron James will play for Steph again you just said there's honor in maintaining one team like Canim we see Lebron in OK col State Warriors jersey can we see Steph in a Lakers jersey even though I don't know if it was like the real internet that came up did you did step did Steph post himself like oh I don't look bad with the Lakers the real internet I don't know if that was a real internet I don't believe everything but I saw a picture of him in a Lakers jersey and he's like that doesn't look bad well I feel like if we were going to see it happen particularly the reporting around the last sort of trade deadline Adrian wowski saying that maybe there was interest here that these two teams had at least had some some early contact that's when we would have seen it LeBron's on sidequest Notions right now I think it was dog that said it like he's accomplished so much he's even accomplished playing with his own son yeah like what else is out there and that's what's tough to walk away from too Zach what do you think about this well first of all the Steph LeBron pick and roll in the Olympics or the LeBron death pick and roll flip it around it was awesome we might see it again in an all star game in the Western Conference I'm not sure this is a realistic scenario in the NBA LeBron's about to be 40 like how long is this going to continue to go on this is not something we can speculate about happening 3 years from now and yeah he could go join the Warriors for the minimum if that's all he cared about but a I think there was some trepidation at least around LeBron last year when the Warriors knocked on the door at the trade deadline about do we really want to change teams again do we really want to chase a ring in another place again or has LeBron accomplished all that needs to be accomplished to cement his legacy I think he wants to stay a Laker but if that were to change and all he wanted to do was win all he cared about was winning there'd be situations better than Golden State to sign for the minimum why not sign with the Thunder for the minimum why not sign with the Sixers for the minimum so it's nice to dream and I will keep dreaming about that pick and roll that got Team USA over the finish line that got Team USA past wemi before w leveled up at the end of the Olympics so I'll keep dreaming I guess ex you know what we're not going to stop you from keeping dreaming we we appreciate that we got a lot to get to on our show particularly because the temperature it is rising in they were Skyhigh for Caitlyn Clark in the fever but to start the season they had a little bit of a rough go of it they lost their first five games they ended up one and eight through their first nine games and during that first month the playoffs they didn't feel realistic at all Clark she struggled with turnovers and the discourse it was really centered round this just being an adjustment period but then Indie entered the Olympic break 11 and 15 on the year and then they really turned it around they've won seven of their eight since they clinched a playoff birth for the first time since 2016 which by the way was the last year of Hall of Famer and franchise icon T mik Catchings career so Caitlyn she continues to make history she's the first rookie to win WNBA player of the month since the awards Inception in 2010 and last night it was no exception so the fever they were hosting the sparks in this one of course Tyrese Halbert and Chen pulling up to take in the action consistent yeah he's been showing up third quarter was we're going to pick this one up tied to 55 Clark hit the crossover what when you're able to just drag dribble like that back you got to that's just hard it's hard you got to send more help by the way her 100th three-pointer through the season 34 games passing Ryan Howard for the fewest career games to reach 100 points and then just a couple seconds in transition she is so fast deceptively fast that's why they are able to score these big numbers because they do their damage in transition right here Clark quick five points for Clark the fever lead 66 6 tough one it'll push off to three and then fever pushing their lead again so let's go ahead shate here to the fourth quarter early fourth the fever up Clark dribbles behind the back drains the three it's pick your PO poison but you can't because all of the players are playing well she finished with four three-pointers oh what a little dime behind the back to Aaliyah Boston for the buck up and the foul I mean just making phenomenal passes and then Boston with the Finish there she's fired up after and then under 30 seconds left to play here she's one rebound shy of a triple double and she knows it this is actually really it's really funny if you watch Kelsey Mitchell because she's like looking around like wait what's happening I don't know if she knew the memo making sure Clark gets high fives from her teammates after she secures her second trip triple double of the Season Take a listen to Clark's reaction post game did you know you were one rebound away from your second triple double of course I knew but somebody had to get the rebound so AB was joking we always joke about stealing each other's rebounds so was funny I mean of course she knew she was hunted that rebound down 24 points 10 rebounds 10 assists the fever win their fifth in a row for the first time since 2015 so Caitlyn Clark finished with that triple double she just continues her Superstar trajectory she's the only rookie in WNBA history with the triple double and now has two in her debut campaign 2024 is the 25th season for the fever in the W and Clark is the only player in franchise history to ever get a triple double and you know we had to bring in our girl CH to break it all down what have you seen Chan from Caitlyn during this fever turnaround look the hottest team in the WNBA right now is the Indiana Fever Kelsey Mitchell has been balling Lexi Hall has been an ex factor and that was a great chess move just getting this lineup with chemistry but make no mistake Caitlyn Clark is doing things Beyond her years let me show you how good 22 has been she's on Pace to generate the most points in a season in WNBA history as for this win streak though Caitlyn has created 224 points between points scored herself and points assisted that's almost 45 points per game and the most by any player ever during a five-game win streak so let's take it to the court so I can show you how she gets it done first let's talk about off ball this is an Iverson cut over two screeners then there's a pin down then there's a Chase then there's a double contest all to get this shot that is not easy work but she makes it look like slight work now let's go to on Ball when she has the ball in her hands she's initiating the offense just able to use her skills probing good little uh quick screen but then to go with her dtis is able to slip to the mid-range to knock down a nice bunny so she's able to not only score herself but she's Distributing the ball but last but not least I mean y'all it's it's what I've said in transition once she gets the ball you have to really Sprint back because of plays like this she's able to draw two I mean these are eely Advanced type of situations that rookies don't normally do she just had her second triple double but don't sleep on her double doubles she has had seven games with 20 points and 10 dimes that's the third most in league history the fever are not a matchup that anybody wants to play right now Malik it's been a minute 3 weeks since our last show to be Zach so let's catch up on this summer together shall we a little summer snapshot if you will so after the Celtics won their NBA record 18th Championship the rest of the league that were Off to the Races making moves to try to get back on top so on June 20th just two days after the Celtics won at all the Lakers they hired JJ reck as their new head coach he doesn't seem to have any trepidations that he doesn't have any experience in the role he doesn't seem too concerned at all I really don't give a like honestly I don't look at the current roster as as being that far off from a championship caliber team okay so we'll revisit that later but 5 days after that the New York Knicks they would make a big splash trading for male Bridges who gets to reunite with his old villain NOA teammates including Jaylen Brunson that duo won two national championships as wild cats it's kind of like second nature you know playing basketball with him he plays the right way you know kind not how to play off of him so I'm excited play with everybody him and everybody else on his team the very next day it was the start of the NBA draft and in a year where the lottery picks they weren't maybe as splashy of names as we've seen in years past all eyes were on the most talked about second round Prospect in NBA history with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA draft the Los Angeles Lakers select bronnie James from the University of Southern California so that means we will see history the first ever fatherson duo in the NBA with LeBron and bronny James teaming up together in La so now we flip our calendars to July one of the busiest days around the league it started with Jason Tatum signing a 5-year $314 million extension with the Boston Celtics the richest contract in NBA history and that very same day Paul George he agreed to a 4-year $212 million contract with the Sixers after George walked away unhappy with his contract negotiations with the Clippers like the first initial deal was I thought kind of disrespectful so the big day continued when after four titles in the Bay Area Klay Thompson signed a three-year $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks I'm very grateful for my time at uh Golden State I just felt like moving on could just re-energize me and do something special for the rest of my career our next summer signing caught at least one of us uh a little bit off guard 100% Donovan Mitchell has played his last game for the Cleveland Cavaliers you know what it's all right perk we all make mistakes we all make incorrect predictions sometimes Mitchell did sign a threeyear $50.5 million extension to stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers and speaking of Cleveland ties a day after Mitchell LeBron James will continue his legendary career for at least a few more years he signed a 2-year $104 million extension with the Lakers until the end of the 202 5 26 Season so let's go now from one Legend to another right because there were questions about how patient Steph Curry would be in Golden State but Dub's GM Mike Dunley Jr he was quick to quiet those talks all that stuff will get figured out and think will be uh you know I think take pry confidently it'll be a warri play later in the summer the Warriors they moved one step closer to that Promise by signing Curry to a one-year 62.6 million extension through the 2026 27 season on the same day though as dun ley's comments Jaylen Brunson he showed his commitment to New York by signing a 4-year $16.5 million extension with the Knicks a significant pay cut though to ensure New York can pursue talent to surround Brunson so then as the calendar year it turned August all Focus turned to the Olympic team as they fought their way to their fifth consecutive gold medal after surviving a scare in the semi-final round against Serbia they took down Victor wanyama in France to win it all and for the fifth consecutive Olympics the United States of America is golden so if you don't know now you know that is what happened this summer I know okay you crushed it you brought the heat you know what your human Spark Notes it's 105 degrees outside so we had to bring the heat in the studio I know it just feels like we in a million miles an hour I'm going to catch my breath a little bit we've had a month just about right to digest everything that has happened so CH I'm going to turn to you first the most intriguing move of the off season was what s Zach's here and I feel like I have to do this because when Zach gets excited he's like H the most intriguing move to me has to be will the process finally deliver on the promise for a championship good it's got to be Philly that big three between Tyrese Maxi now Paul George Joel and beid they combined for 83 points per game they've got enough game to take them there but will they be able to do it will they be able to complete the and what I love about this group is I feel like they're all sort of underdogs in some ways Paul George you know I wouldn't say he took a backseat in the clippers but you know maybe didn't get always the shine that he could have potentially had Joel and beid trying to make sure he's a dominant Force but you know Health situation tyes just continuing to emerge so all eyes are on Philly because they've been you know the fans of Philly have been patient for so long now they have the perfect Squad they have a new coach not new per se but like youngish to this squad all the pieces are together now can they actually and the question right Z is how big is the gap between the Boston Celtics and a team like the Philadelphia 76ers absolutely you know Boston has all the ingredients to make a real run at a repeat nobody has repeated since the warriors with Durant in 2018 they have the best chance of any team since then that's won the title Philly's coming there's drama all over the top of the league New York how good are they going to be Milwaukee do they have a run left Oklahoma City are they ready Denver lost kcp it it could be a pretty open season with a lot of teams that have a chance so what's the question then that you're asking yourself this summer after you've seen everything happen we know Chan is looking at at Philadelphia what are you looking at Zach so all those teams I just mentioned that are gunning for the title this year tick tick tick tick tick because the most intriguing storyline in the NBA is the monster that is coming in San Antonio how good is Victor when Bama going to be right now right away in year two because playing against Team USA in the Olympics he looked like he wanted to go toe-to-toe with everybody on the team at the same time and all of those teams better get their titles now cuz that dude is coming and I think one of the more interesting questions in the league is how good can he make the Spurs right away and if he's this good if he's a top 10 player this year with a trajectory to go even higher by year three and year four what the Spurs do because when you got a player like that you got to start surrounding him with even more Talent they got Chris Paul that got Harrison Barnes be very interesting to see but that's the zooming out Victor wanyama is the biggest story in basketball does the timeline change now that we've seen what Victor wanyama can be because we we talked about this after the Olympics it it's not a stretch to look ahead to 2028 right here in Los Angeles and see Victor wanyama as the best men's basketball player that we see competing out there because we expect Steph Curry LeBron James Kevin Durant it is unlikely that we see them out there again Bobby you've actually been making these decisions though so if you're in San Antonio how are you looking at how you would build around Victor right now how would you respond to to Zach's question yeah I I mean I think the San Antonio team is going to be better uh and I think if you're San Antonio you want to play competitive winning games but I still want to get some more lottery picks certainly in a loaded 20125 draft where I have my own and I have Atlanta's pick and I got a Chicago first and potentially a Charlotte first four first round picks I'm still looking at the future here where we're not in a win now mode but when you get Chris Paul and then you trade for Harrison B Barnes the goal is to put veterans around Victor wenyama and as I said the goal is certainly I'm looking at next summer the summer of 2025 when help is coming their way with you know certainly more young players yeah I mean to capture the flag that Pursuit is going to be on for 2025 but how do you expect Chris Paul to maybe unlock another level for Victor I think it's the professionalism like everyone knows once Chris Paul steps into your basketball training facility there's no jokes no games it's all about playing basketball the right way and showing up on every possession and so when I think about him tag teaming first of all I mean there it is lights back that's exactly what Chris is gonna do the lights are going to be on on Victor web and Yama and it's GNA be able to allow him to shine in ways that we just saw you do thank you just like that like that all right Bobby before we move on want to get your biggest question for for the after this off season yeah I mean I think my biggest question is what Milwaukee team are we going are we going to see here we're going to get a full training camp of the Milwaukee Bucks under Doc Rivers who took over in in late January here I think the X Factor is going to be of course Chris Middleton again who's coming off surgery to both ankles here listen on paper I'm I can put Milwaukee right up there as far as the second best team in the Eastern Conference I know my friends in New York and Philadelphia and certainly Cleveland are not not happy with that but I think Milwaukee could potentially if healthy and a full training camp under Doc Rivers can contend with Boston here so those are the things that we know but how about the things that we don't because we know that things move quickly in the NBA and some All-Star caliber players they're entering the 2025 season heading into the final year of their deal I'm talking about Jimmy Butler Julius Randall they have player options while Jamal Murray Brandon Ingram are set to be unrestricted free agents after the upcoming season their kids back to school May disagree with me on that but there's lots in love about summer the beach the barbecues NBA players hitting the podcast circuit so it's time for some hot summer Mike you've got a couple of weeks left in the summer before teams you know lock down in trading Camp so let's get to it we're going to start with LeBron James he talked about his new teammate on the shop take a listen you thought through not relationship cuz you'll always be his dad he always be a son but what's your working relationship is he going to call you Dad at practice in the locker room no we already laid that no we already laid no he can't we already laid that down cannot call me dad in the work place all right once we once we leave out of the prac facility and the gates Clos I could be dad again in the car if we ride together at home I could be Dad no he got to call me like 2 three or Bron okay or you know goat if he want to that's up to him he said the gates need to be closed we're not the gates can't even still be open and you're calling me dad today look I don't know this is going to be a harder transition for bronnie than I think people expect D because you're so used to calling you know like for siblings I played with my sis right and I was like I never called her sis I just called her neck because that's what you do in the household I don't call like my dad anything other than Dad pops Papa D but like now I'm going to be like hey can't say hey Daddy Peter like I don't do that can't Bobby coached didn't you coach your son I I know that's that's different did he call you coach coach Robert no my my kids call me dad I both of them and they call me dad dad on the court Zach what are your expectations for for LeBron and Bron outside of I would if I were a betting woman say that bronnie is probably going to slip up a couple times and call him dad on the court what do what do you how about bronnie goes the other way and kind of needles him a little bit how about Oldtimer old man pass me the ball old man play the age card a little bit see I like that I like that I like that flip it on it exactly FP it on his head a little bit all right well uh speaking of some interesting chatter check out what MAV Center Derek Lively II had to say about Rudy goar who's on the posters who's on the TV screens who's on the commercials that player is definitely gonna be on the FL perfect example they played the Minnesota timber wolves there is zero reason Rudy Gober should have been on that Court zero but you are paying him about 4450 million you better get your out there and figure the out and he didn't and he didn't he did not by the way that was Theo Pinson interviewing Lively Rudy gber won his fourth Defensive Player of the Year this season but those words they say a lot about NBA we we hear this all the time how NBA players seem to view goar Zach is he ever going to be able to shake this this perception uh I at just point I think it's going to take winning a championship because it seems to be the favorite pastime of NBA players is just making fun of Rudy goar constantly he's a very good player he's got some flaws his low lights tend to be of the extreme variety like Luca making a crazy three in his eye and then talking a whole bunch of trash that was not very nice at all but he's a very good player the hate is sort of strange to me Rudy must be used to it by now because it seems to be pretty Universal around the NBA yeah to me that was kind of out of pocket because he was extremely valuable especially when cat wasn't out during the regular season I know a lot of people judge him on what he does and maybe his liabilities in the postseason but still he's an integral part of that Squad that made it to the Western Conference Finals to me when I heard that exchange I just saw it actually I know in a Twisted weird way got me excited because we saw Derek Lively go up against Rudy goar I mean these things like they it matters to them like it's not just a rivalry because we're playing these guys are trying to emerge as the next dominant forces out the west and so you can see even though the series is done it still carries over in sort of how they approach and view each other but like can are we ever gonna like say Rudy like he's he's a four he's one of three players to ever be a four-time defensive play like he's a first I agree with Zach winning a championship shuts everybody up Bobby where do you fall on this I I've never seen a player so disrespected hen Rudy goar feels like he has a kick me sign on on his on his back here here's a a player you just said who's been a um a defensive player of the year he's going to be in the Hall of Fame and I think certainly what happened this summer with the Olympics certainly magnified things as far as him taking a limited role certainly there were games where he didn't even you know he played a couple minutes here and I think he's basically a pinata for all these NBA players and I agree with Zach unless he wins a NBA championship you know he he'll be continually ridiculed here well let's go to his teammate Anthony Edwards we can't do this segment without him he was asked about the 90s in the NBA and this is what aunt told the Wall Street Journal quote I didn't watch it back in the day so I can't speak on it but then he continues to say uh they say it was tougher back then than it is now but I don't think anybody had skill back then Michael Jordan was the only one that really had any skill you know what I mean so that's why when they say Kobe they were like oh my God but now everybody has skill so someone had to speak up for the the the old school Magic Johnson take it away I don't never respond to a guy that's never won a championship there not nothing to really say he didn't win a college championship I don't know if he even w a high school champ for the record for the record Aunt did win a high school championship but but put it put it that aside Bobby why so much disrespect for the 90s here oh I've never seen such a naive statement certainly during during the summer here and and and Anthony headward certainly put his foot in his mouth here I think it's funny that he said that he didn't get to see the players in the 90s but I don't think he was born in the 90s when I looked at his birth certificate lately here so there were certainly a lot of good players uh Zach you could talk about it more certainly car Malone and Reggie Miller and you know certainly Jason kid and we got Kobe we got a Kobe Bryant sighting in the late 90s here along with Michael Jordan Zach what do you think I think I'm going to start a side project and my side project is going to be I'm going to review movies that I haven't seen and admit I haven't seen this movie but here's all the reasons it's stinks when you preface your review of '90s players by saying hey look I didn't really watch basketball in the 90s but let me tell you all about how bad it was I think you kind of chip away at your credibility with that preface there so I'm not going to read much into it I was alive during the 90s it ain't that long ago you can queue up some video there are some pretty damn good players in the '90s let's move on I like how you said queue up some video and I was going to say you can watch YouTube you could like that's our I was thinking VHS tap we didow up on VHS look Anthony Edwards is a professional pot stirer okay so like he likes to stir the pot a little bit with his comments I there's a better way to explain it like maybe he thought it was you know the
