Breaking News: Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Max Pacioretty to PTO

we have big news from the Toronto Maple Leafs organization Max petti is officially going to Camp with the team and expected to sign we'll discuss the details what needs to happen to make it work coming up next so welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as we reported on yesterday very much expected that Max Patcher ready was going to be signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs and it was possible that he may have to do a PTO first and then sign a contract a little bit later as the Leafs kind of navigate through like a lot of teams some salary cap challenges that's not the first time a Toronto fan has actually heard salary cap challenges I'm sure it'll be continue to be an issue is they always spend right to the cap uh but Max Patcher ready for rate now is officially within the Maple Leafs organization although for right today it is just a PTO uh but the expectation which comes directly from his agent Alan Walsh on his X account is that Max petti will be signing a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs before the beginning of the 2425 NHL season now in the last day or so we've reported on this from information that came from uh mostly from Frank s Valley Chris Johnson a few others were been talking about the fact that pater ready was very much expected to be uh signing with the leaps but of course right now after signing Nick Robertson yesterday they do not have the available salary cap space they had to look after Robertson first for a couple of reasons one that where he was RFA and he wasn't keen on being a leaf is what we had been hearing and then he didn't want didn't want to sign wanted a fresh start somewhere else but obviously the Leafs didn't seem keen on trading him either so you know at that point it was going to be You' hope that both sides would be like okay fine let's just get a year deal done and see where it goes and that's what happened and CU if not he could have been an offer sheet candidate of course another team which hadn't happened yet but there's teams out there that definitely could have done it and could have forced the Leaf's hand um I'm not sure if Robertson's agent would have been out there looking for one or if they were either way never came to be they're protected he signed but then within a couple of hours of signing we get word from Sarah Valley that Robertson is still likely to be traded but has much more value with a contract than without so we'll see um what the future holds for Nick Robertson but obviously Max petti and Nick Robertson play the same position so clearly I do think what goes down with Robertson is you know potentially going to be impactful on what happens with Max but seeing that his agent Alan Walsh has already put it out on you know social media here on to the public to see that he's expected to sign I mean maybe that's his way of kind of making sure that if they have a handshake agreement or whatnot that it's going to happen put the pressure on them but they do need need to clear some space and even if they move Robertson himself I mean that's a possibility that um they could then give that money to Pat ready and sign him that that could work they do have around I think it's around 300,000 in space right now not enough to sign a player but of course you free up the 800,000 plus that they gave Robertson you tack that on they could give a one-year $1 million deal to a separate player assuming that nobody comes back into in a Robertson trade if that happens that we'll be uh counting on their books right away um so we'll see on that front but there's also talk that the leaps would also like to sign Yanni Haw andpa who that hold scenario was been dragging on all summer waiting to see if this is going to happen or not because it was it was actually talked about on July 1 and discussed by bride living himself the GM of the leaves so we'll see what happens but clearly when it comes to pater ready um this is a you know an idea here to bring in another veteran who can kind of push along this team a former Captain uh but to me I I think they should be cautious here uh I'm not sure if pater ready is really the answer I mean he could turn out to be a terrific fit score 20 30 goals wouldn't be shocking if that happened given his long history of being such a proven goal scorer in the NHL but I will caution fans it's been a long time it's been about five years four to five years since he's played anywhere near a full schedule in the NHL it was the co shorten 1920 season and he was on track to play around 80 games but of course kov shut the league down he end up playing 71 um the next year was a 56 game campaign shortened season because of the the restrictions and getting started late and all that he played 48 out of 56 so pretty close but then the last few years he's played 53 games total in the last two seasons and only scored seven goals so that puts him on Pace you know for what does that work out to like 11 12 goals over an 82 game campaign that's not really what you need from a veteran who's got many 25 30 plus goal scoring seasons on his resume so you know clearly Pat ready to me last year in Washington started slow didn't seem like quite the same player as the year went on he did seem to get a little bit better you know and yeah the Washington team wasn't the strongest he probably have a chance to play with some stronger players in Toronto per se but at the same time that second half of Washington's year they had a lot of injuries so it's not like he was playing a bottom six role all the time um I just don't know that he was you know has what it takes anymore like we'll have to wait and see it's been a long couple of years now I've I've seen some reports that he's healthy for the first time in a long time um you know clearly when he came back from the first Achilles injury you know played a short stretch it happened again uh and now like I said last year he came back you know got through the season without reinjuring himself he had a late start and at this point now he's had more time to be healthy more time to train and some people are saying that he's as healthier that he's been in a long time and and I hope for his sake that that's the case cuz he's had a really rough go um but given the track record of the past couple years it's just really difficult to see how this is a slam dunk home run but at the same time you could also say with his history it's worth the risk uh you know give him one year $1 million deal if it's not working out the deal can be fully buriable in the miners the uh the contract going to expire after one year it's not like you're tied to a long deal now we don't know for sure that it's going to be one year 1 million that's just my assumption based on the whole you know veteran minimum that you often see uh with these established players but you know will it be that I would hope so uh with the you know kind of handshake agreement that you know if I'm having a good first half of the Season look like I still got lots of game left that maybe we extend for an extra year or two or something like that but I'd want to see more before committing than than that right you would think but Tom will tell the other thing is Max petti is significantly older than Nick Robertson if you still you know if the reports are true that Robertson is still more likely to be traded you know replacing him with a guy patch Ready's age really the best move when you do have some other younger players that might be able to give you similar production you have to ask that question is Easton Cowan ready to come into a spot what about Frasier Mitten um you know what about you know even Alex Steves you know some of these guys that have been kind of tweeners are they ready to take that spot or is it best to have a patch ready to take the pressure off the kids like mint and Cowen so that they don't have to be you know playing a full-time NHL role and not you know having all that pressure on them right so hard to say how this all works out but we for today we know that patch already is on a PTO he's expected according to his agent to officially be a leaf but they need to clear some space and if Yanni Haw is going to be a leaf too then another trade has to happen we talked about in the video last night if you want further analysis on you know the trade scenarios
