since the off season after 17 wins including a couple of Bowl wins the last two years head coach Mike Elco leaves for Texas A&M also leaving town dual threat starting quarterback rile Ley Leonard he took his talents to South Bend by the way Elco and Leonard they're going to go against each other tomorrow night Duke filled the vacancies pretty quickly in early December former Miami head coach Manny Diaz was hired as the 23rd head coach in program history just a couple weeks later Texas backup quarterback Malik Murphy announced he was coming to Durham so there you go the stage is set coach and I think Blue Devils fans they want to know is the momentum that was built the last couple of years going to continue or is this rebuilding year I don't think you're rebuilding college football anymore I think with the portal you're going to see new faces new quarterbacks there's new coaches I think Manny has a chance to come in and build his culture and wrap it around this new quarterback Malik Murphy coming from Texas here he is a greatl looking athlete he has a ton of ability with a big big arm it's very very exciting so now Manny builds his culture and he builds his program and it starts right here on this field tonight and it's going to be awfully exciting to watch it New Era here in Durham North Carolina the rain has moved out and the fans are ready for this Manny Diaz Malik Murphy time to begin we've got Duke and we've got Elon coming up in just a bit here with our kickoff and Elon is going to start at the 25 third member of our team is Justin Walters and we're going to have to wait a little bit to see Malik Murphy but I mean there is a buzz about this guy my friend that is right playay the addition of a new quarterback and head coach always create optimism it helps him school days Murphy told me yesterday that first meeting he had with Diaz when he was younger had a big influence on him wanting to come to Duke Murphy was looking for an offense that fit him and was explosive but he says he's never played in something that fast it sounds like it's going to be all gas no breaks play for the Duke offense can't wait to see it in the meantime Matthew Downing 7year senior quarterback for the Phoenix takes the snap from the shotgun formation and he wants to take a shot deep going down to Chandler brayboy but coming up incomplete as Aon Hall the defensive tackle threw a lot of pressure on Downing and this is his second SE season at Elon coach started his career at Georg he's bounced around he's a veteran well he took a shot on that last play and uh tremendous pressure but they threw the ball vertical to their best [Applause] player TJ Thomas is impressed in Fall Camp is the running back to the left of Downey second down and 10 he's going to whip it to the outside caught at the 31 catch made there by jamarian Dalton for a gain of eight so it's going to bring up third thir down and manageable for Elon this defense under Jonathan py it was certainly a stingy defense for Duke last year Steve but you know so many guys gone only four starters are back for Duke well I tell you they were they brought pressure on that last play and they're going to bring pressure all night they did a great job on Elon Downing did of getting that ball out and now we rolling the third and two or three here right now it's a critical uh third down call right here got to hit this one D the receiver goes in motion from left to right Downing looking well pressure coming and Sack brought down at the 21 by Wesley Williams he plays that Viper position in this paty defense that's a loss of eight and El's going to have to kick yeah he had a speed move and beat the right tackle and that Ball's got to get out this is the matchups you're going to want to watch right here tonight are these ends on these tackles they've got great athleticism great get off up the field and that was just a great job of getting to a quarterback on a third and short right there and uh Elon may start to really think about maybe they run in that situation Jeff JK with the punt Quan Brown the return and he's going to make a fair Catch and about the 18 yd line that's a 58 yd punt to flip the field for y and there is big number six Malik Murphy the Texas transfer 65 230 lb out of Englewood California left Austin to be the guy and you know he wanted an explosive offense as Justin Walters alluded to he he thinks that this Jonathan Brewer offense offers that when Brewer was at SMU last year coach they scored 39 points per game well we're going to watch they're going to go fast here let's watch the tempo of this series ja qu more in the back field and he's going to get the first touch snakes his way up the middle across the the 20 yd line to the 22 for a gain of four brought down by Josh Johnson the nose down right on schedule great run great blocking up front second and six that's the down in distance we want to be in they're on they're snapping it take their hand off they're going to throw it out to the tight end Jeremiah hazley and he is going to be over the line for a first down out to the 29 so dke will move the chains for the first time after quick October 22nd 2022 he's had a couple of season ending injuries last two years that was a really really good play there on defense by uh TJ and uh he just did a fantastic job breaking up that block and penetrating that that uh little screen out there there's a cornerback DJ Hamilton sophomore from Charlotte second down and eight Duke on it's opening drive across the middle and it's caught by Jordan Moore that's a connection and Duke fans hope to see a lot this season in the Phoenix territory down to the 45 yd line really well done really well EX it it started with the protection up front offensive line did a fantastic job and now they'll go back to the ground game it's Jack quz Moore again Jordan Moore Jack quz Moore no relation two very talented Players Number Nine is going to be the primary running back and number eight Jordan Moore he might be one of the best receivers in the ACC when it's all said and done this year this is the clay the fastest Tempo I've seen a long time here right now this is warp speed they're really moving they're really stressing Elon another pass down the seam and that is Javon Harvey and he makes the catch What A Catch Javon Harvey the grad transfer from Old Dominion and now one official is going to overrule the other now they're saying that's the right call for sure yeah no question yep ball hit the ground there they ran a little speed post and uh he beat that corner he had great great uh Separation on them they'll come back to that you're going to see that play again they're very deep at receiver and tight end really the top four pass catchers are back for Duke third down and seven Elan trying to make a play on defense and Samir Hagens good catch and run looked like he was handed in along that far sideline makes a nice move and gets to the 31 ydd line a pickup of 11 and a first down on Third and long that was an interesting call but he made some people miss out there in space and turned that into a gr critical conversion there start Thomas again good hesitation trying to stretch it to the outside but good ankle tackle there by DJ Hamilton who's been very active on this opening defensive series for Elon yeah he's another open field tackle really in space outstanding job because if he didn't make that play that play could have went the distance but you can see Elon right now they're subbing right now trying to exchange their upfront defensive Lin and they're Gass right now you can see the effect of the tempo happening air raid Concepts a lot of window dressing in this offense for Jonathan Brewer they're going to run a fair Pace as Thomas gets another carry yeah Thomas picked up a few on that a little reone play with a throw relief off of it put him in third and medium right now and they're in the Red Zone Third and medium you want to convert these cuz you want to score touchdowns in the Red Zone this is the 10th play of the drive now Moore is going to be in the back field to the right of Murphy and now he'll switch sides third down at three Jordan Moore that's another dke first down inside the 20 and a team High 62 catches last year eight touchdowns couple of catches here already on this drive getting the ball to his Playmakers I'm really impressed with this drive right now they're playing fast and they're getting it to the right people back W Moore power down inside the 15 yd line Nick belos side linebacker for Elon makes the tackle injuries have kept him to just eight games the last couple of season so El un happy to have their stud weak side linebacker back that was a strong run right there you could hear that contact up here and uh it was a great 5yd run second and five TR close more up the middle nowhere to go and it's going to be third down long coming up Ethan Grace Chuck NATO combining on the stop for Elon Chuck NATO did a great job on that play he he defeated the block of the left guard and made that play for uh no gain so put him in third down but they're still in that third and medium range but once again now this is a big down they don't want to have this long drive and settle for a field goal they want to get a touchdown here so this is a great don't want to do is is have a turnover inside the Red Zone here so um they're going to you know come in here and obviously have to take the three but every time you have a drive like that you want to no preseason games it's hard to build chemistry when you have a lot of new people coming together working for the first time sure is great boy Hamilton back to return this Pino kick and it's going to that's what happens you you'll see holds because of the uh penetration this defense is going to the speed the way the backers play downhill the lineman got sideways got off levels and and and grabbed them and and that that's what they're going to have to avoid here because now look at look where you are right now you know it's it's a long way to go first and 20 handle the pressure stay on schedule more runs and try not to get them uh themselves pushed back like this now you're punting from the back of your end zone you know uh I if they can't get many yards here and so this this third down you great protection as I said and then on the run you know he absolutely bounced that thing and raced him to the end zone so that's a real uh you know mo that's a momentum builder for Duke um you know there's still 57 seconds left here so I mean you know it' be interesting to see uh how elon's going to play this right now here's Manny Diaz he told you and I this week he was excited to see how his team was going to handle adversity he said you know there's going to be something tonight and think of how close this game was to being tied up at three just ahead of halftime now it's a 10-point lead couple of big matchups here but the morning one at the Mercedes-Benz stadium is between Clemson and Georgia Georgia the number one preseason team in the country Clemson coming in ranked 14 all right so these two head coaches obviously Championship caliber coaches in Davos Sweeney and Kirby Smart they know what lies ahead for these two at noon on Saturday and they spoke about playing in such a massive game to kick off the season you know playing a game like this this is usually you get you only you only get opportunities like this in the postseason in the playoffs in a National Championship uh but this just happened to be on our schedule so uh it's a great opportunity to play the best team in the country right out of the gate our guys are excited for a uh great matchup um looks like we'll get the earliest kick of the day so it should be exciting in terms of um all the people across the country that'll be watch a great game and a really a great rivalry a rivalry that when you look back I didn't realize how many years consecutively Georgia played uh Clemson for a long time but just a lot of uh respect for their program what dabo's done he's done an incredible job and for them to take over this cause I think it's a uh it's a it's a great um event and um to have two teams like this it's going to be awesome as you can tell there Kirby Smart really exudes excitement when he says the word excitement uh these two defenses though coming into tomorrow Stout is a word you can use you see very comparable coming off of last season Prett fascinating it is pretty fascinating so we'll see how it all shakes out tomorrow when they take the field so the word you keep hearing is opportunity EJ we'll start with you how does Clemson on Saturday seize this opportunity against the dogs the big thing is turnover margin in my opinion because when you play a Clemson or excuse me a Georgia football team uh it starts with them creating turnovers that gave them more opportunities on offense Carson Beck excellent quarterback pass for 74% completion percentage last year which is hard to do in 707 but imagine doing that an entire season uh but for Clemson I really feel like it's just owning the football and when you get chances to have these drives get three points get seven points don't put the ball In Harm's Way to where you start doing too much as a quarterback specifically to uh to Kate KY right and the the interesting thing is is if Clemson does that which they had a bit of a problem last year there's no shot you win this game I mean the margin of error is going to be so thin but the thing that I am paying attention most to is those wide receivers cuz that has been something that a lot of people are pointing to in the past couple of years for these teams saying where are they where are these guys that Clemson has been so known for for many many years guys that I played with guys after me uh that that are in the NFL still right now how are those guys going to do because they're healthy Eddie we were down there we got to see them they look fantastic can they all put it together stay on the field because I think they have a really electri group yeah it was exciting to see those guys in person uh you watch them on film and and then to see them the way that they move they look like NFL guys but they have to prove it and and it starts with game one and their excitement came from the evolvement of K kumnick they said he's making checks at the line of scrimmage that he's more accurate with the football but the main thing for me is stop the run I I know Georgia has two running backs out in Trevor etn and rogi Robinson but you still have to stop the run if you can allow Georgia to be uh running the ball and uh passing the ball and that allows the play action which is why he was able to complete 74% of his passes it's going to be tough to beat this team so stopping the run is number one for me and I'll add tackling because it's the first game of the season every game we've watched the past two days she's some bad tackling and usually that's normal cuz in training camp you know th guys helmet shoulder pass maybe not banging as much as we used to when we were playing college football but I know that's going to be a huge area because if you don't tackle on the edge that's where Georgia can kill you I mean you had a four yard game that turns into a 24 yard game every time so that's going to be key for the perimeter guys and I think just to double down on what you said that line of scrimmage this this is an NFL offensive line right for Georgia I mean literally all five guys might be drafted or playing in the NFL one day on the Clemson side same thing though you want to be that that's who you say you are defensive line you all these things you have to prove that again and this is a great tape for the NFL yeah cats and dogs going toe to- toe tomorrow at noon we'll be live from inside the Benz at 11:00 a.m. with the Huddle but down in the swamp it's going to be a steamy one at 3:30 between Miami and Florida it's going to be a good one though this is an instate rivalry both of these teams have a lot to prove this year both of their coaches as well by the way Miami comes in with a brand new quarterback under Center and cam Ward here's what he says about proving himself on Saturday uh yeah I have a lot to prove to myself um I have a lot to prove to my teammates and you know that's really the only thing that matters to me is my teammates and myself so you know we're going we're goingon to rise to the occasion we're gonna be prepared to play um and just defensively Florida um they're a good defense um from o line I mean from D line to cornerbacks safety they're they're a good overall defense and you know they be physical with us we have to match the physicalness and you know the end of the day is football you know heads are going to get hot um but we just got to keep our composure all right what is most important for Miami if they want to pull off a win against Florida on the road the most important thing is hold on to the ball uh it's it's going to be hot it's going to be sweaty and we saw last night with NC State the ball's on the ground a ton and that's why Western Carolina was able to be in that game turnovers so it's going to be hot you're going to be you're going to be tired but holding on going to that ball is going to be a key yeah to me it's weathering the storm man you're going to the swamp that place is going to be jacked up if a big play happens special team something else that can change everything and you've been there when it can be riled up I have to imagine that big offensive line lean on them run the football keep your quarterback clean and i' add to like you said with weathering the uh storm is also you know controlling your emotions because it's a rivalry game more than anything it's a obviously across ACC SEC but all these guys know each other everybody for the most part is from Florida or from South Florida so it's a lot of you know talking back and forth and Florida wants to show that they're a better team than they actually get credit for preseason and I'm sure Miami wants to follow up on all the greatness that they've had this off season all right for you our QB cam Ward's coming in with a lot of expectations what do you want to see out of him in game one as a Kan a clean game but I also want to see him take the game over too like when you get into the second third quarter there's no need to feel like hey I I got to govern on this thing let it football presented by Dr Pepper ACC season is underway for the Duke Blue Devils this is the lit lifter for 2024 against Elon alongside Steve AIO play mic Justin Walters down on the sideline a lot of folks here at Wallace Wade Stadium and waiting for a long time for tonight to judge what the Manny Diaz era is going to be like what Malik Murphy is going to be able to do at quarterback we've seen one half what do you think you know I'm encouraged I I see Malik uh handling himself with poise he missed a few throws early in that half but he's but he came back and hit that one before the half and uh I think his receivers have helped him there a little bit the line has given them good protection um you know I think on defense they've been Sensational there's no doubt the Duke defense has carried the day so far for the Blue Devils in that first half they were finding a way to get to Downing the quarterback early in often yeah I mean there's you know five sacks on the day and nine tfl so I mean these are some examples of some of these sacks where these ends are speeding past these tackles and just creating Havoc and here's a great shot of Malik you know collecting uh connecting on that beautiful post route that beat both split both safeties for a big play and then of course we have the big touchdown run where he out races everybody in the end zone and they score that touchdown that was that turnaround after missing the field goal by Elon talk about five sacks nine tackles for loss this the most sacks in the first half in the last 20 years for Duke I me I guess it's no surprise Manny defense Manny Diaz known as a great defensive coordinator and his defense is certainly head of the offense at this point for more let's go down to Justin Walters yeah Clay I caught up with Coach Diaz and he told me to no surprise he was really encouraged the way that his offense ended the first half he said that will help calm their nerve he says you see what can happen when Malik Murphy hits on some of those long passes defensively he loves what that group is doing on the other side coach tristani said that the first half they proved a lot of things they can sustain drives they can flip the field but on offense they must they must protect Matthew dowy that is a key thing but defensively he loves the way his group is playing and he thinks that this half is where they're going to shine bright and Downing 6 for 10 56 yards he was sacked five times of course so Duke beat him up a little bit find some protection we see if Elon can get back in this ball game but Duke is going to have it first here to start the second out line kick off the foot of Maran and Duke is going to start at the 25 yd line so Malik Murphy the Texas transfer this is the first time that kicking he's a starting quarterback of a program so you know I think we saw some nerves a little bit early on Steve but he warmed up yeah I mean he hasn't played a lot of football and here he is now you know he's under the kicking the 5yd penalty will be added to the Touchback first down so Duke's going to start at the 30 after the penalty yeah they're going to uh uh you know have a series here I think they want to go back like they started the game with a nice 13-play drive let's give a little Kudos though to Elon they've played pretty darn aggressive on defense and those kids have played tough It's a credit to their program and to their coaching staff I'm very uh excited about them I think they're going to have a heck of a year here seven starters back on that defense couple of All-American safeties that played well in the first half more the running back jaquez Mo the catch out of the back field that's going to be a gain of five Atkins gets there to make the first tackle of the second half great great play by Atkins I mean defeating that perimeter block out there by the white out making that play still a gain of four Mor's first pass and Matt is over thrown intended for Jordan Moore kind of dangerous there couple of defenders in the vicinity including one of those aforementioned all-americans khil Baker yeah that that wasn't a great ball and really uh you know could lead to a knockout punch for the receiver right there leading him into the safety like that so that was a little bit of a scary throw he's trying to hit Jordan Moore six catches 65 yds in the first half Murphy quick out and it's caught by Samir Hagen 30 catches last year here the number two returning receiver for Duke and he gets eight in the first down ran a little pick route out there really well executed they're going trip 3 by1 trips in the boundary here trying to get a numbers advantage and they got it yeah receiver screen and pkle nearly got enough for a first down he's going to get eight on first down that was a quick touch great job by Malik great job by the receiver good blocking out there well designed Malik Murphy the captain one of the four captains for Duke as he won the starting job about two weeks ago he was named the starter for the Blue Devils finds Hagen again inside the 40 and now this offense moving with Precision moving with some speed that's a gain of a dozen the protection was outstanding he had a clean pocket he could stand back there like at seven on seven like it's practice you know we call it Skelly and uh threw a great ball and uh you know great run after catch right there so nice job goes to tankle again who's steer wrestled to the sideline by squ Salu Brooks gain of about four they brought a weak safety Blitz that time and and and uh mik saw that and and and threw the ball out there on an adjustment route Murphy CS in time Higgins is wide open boy they are using him a lot on this opening drive of the second half and that's a first [Applause] down Hain out of Philadelphia that was rough at the end of that play uh he got the back of his knees rolled up on there at the very end end of this play watch this catch great catch gets his feed in there he's kind of out of bounds and then boom he gets the back of his legs taken out right there I'm surprised they didn't throw a flag it wasn't intentional but still was dangerous it's Jonathan Rob in the cornerback from Jacksonville Florida Elon had the third best passing defense in the coastal athletic last year and they nearly pick one off there that's Caleb curtain getting his hands on it Ethan Grace the defensive end with a ton of pressure on Murphy I don't know if he forced the throw a little bit because of that pressure a he didn't see it coming yeah no Fina Fina got beat up on the left side right there and uh he took a pretty good shot Malik did he he hung on that throw a little bit too long but uh still there was pressure there and he might have felt that but uh you know that wasn't that wasn't greatly executed bandra Thomas try to pick his way ahead be third down and long here for Duke pretty good penetration there up front um you know by I think it's finy very good job by him he got underneath the pads of the left guard and and and caused that running back to have to redirect really fast so nice job on defense by El Elon comes up with some real nice plays now third down and nine in the first half Duke was three of seven on third down Murphy and that should have been caught hazley coming back for it the tight end can't make the grab and so now we'll see Todd Pino come out to attempt a long field [Applause] goal hazley I mean the receiver could have helped him there a little bit and you know that that was a catchable Ball but it wasn't a great pass and uh you know jeez it was such a great drive going down the field too really good Rhythm really good mix of plays um but they sputtered a little bit there at the end poo from 42 oh yeah and K State but with Quinn yers and Arch Manning in that quarterback room decided to transfer and he knew Manny Diaz from way back and it it's a good fit according to him great fit I is wonderful he's in an offense that's going to feature his ability to throw the football and he's showing off that arm right here really nice deep ball he threw right there laid out for that thing maybe but that was uh they took a shot you know know that's what you got to do on first down took a shot here's the replay yep Jordan Moore who's been his favorite Target tonight just about had his seventh catch of the evening and it would have been a big play sure would have you know those first down strikes that's what they want in this offense they they you know they want player Elon Jonathan Brewer talked about see the Eline Defenders right now you got guys with their hands on their hips right now I think they're really starting to feel the effects of not as much depth against this Tempo offense right now they're getting tired and Duke isn't nearly running at the tempo that they were earlier in this game they kind of taken their foot out the gas as the game is worn on as Jes gets the hand out there third down yeah well you know maybe their their mindset right now is take a little more time off the clock [Music] that's going to be penalty flag that didn't look right flags on the field it's going to be offside on Elon is my guess you know usually that's that free if it is that's the free play where you like to just send it down the field on a on a go route and just you know let it let it Del mool at the tight end Quan Brown who's very quick this is a deep deep position group of pass catchers that Jonathan Brewer has in his stable he does wrapped up in the be second down and goal there's I I I like their skill and uh and I think their scheme matches their skill and I tell you what I do like I like the fact that John Brewer he's in this offense though he's got some some 12 Personnel he's got some tight end Wing formations that they want to run the ball behind so I think it's a it's a nice mix of of vertical passing game and uh and some hard hard downhill runs as well there's Jonathan Brewer he's got a little Mal on he's got a little Lashley he's got a little Sunny dikes start Thomas hops to the outside he's wrapped up it'll be third down and goal to go for Duke as they try to punch another one in here late Ethan Grace Dylan Tucker combining on the stop meanwhile Elon they're going to be back here in the city of Durham next week we've got another game in this town at NC Central a game's going to be on ESPN plus and I I Tony trani they're not going to win this game but this defense is is tough and they've got some offensive weapons obviously Bray boy he's there were some bad moments you I think it there are a lot of people that would say maybe they could have stuck with him another year or so because yeah he's a good coach no doubt about it especially a defensive mind and the way the defense has played here tonight outstanding 15 tackles for loss the most for Duke since 2007 he's a heck of a football coach he did a great job at Miami and yes they probably should have G him a little more time but he's got another chance here and he is going to do great things here at Duke I really believe that so you've been a head coach you had stops at Temple Boston College Colorado state after the first game of the season any season what's what's the most important thing that you have to do when you go into to talk to your players I think you want to walk in that locker room and you want to and you want to to talk about the positive things that happened on that field and make them feel good about the work that they did hey we got a lot of work to do but these were some great things that we got done now we'll have time next to watch the film and we'll we'll keep growing on the things we have to improve on but you want them to feel good about the work they got through preseason camp and be honest just just be positive honest is what I would say like one of my takeaways I think they need to run the ball just a little bit more consistently at the end they got some good runs but through the B Belly of the game they could a little better there but I like I like the makings of this offense and I really like what he's doing right now with this and looks like he's got a lot to work with here in 2024 he's done a great job you know we've talked a lot about Manny here in defense justifiably and rightly so but he is a really good young football coach and he's done a heck of a job with this defensive unit and I'm sure he's another rising star in this business I think both coordinators for Duke did a great job as and I and I think the coaches that Elon did a great job I really want to give a lot of credit to them to their staff and to their players they they fought really hard here time and elon's going to call a timeout this been fun has it clay it's great to have college football back and there so many things to talk about with this Duke football program and you we've seen Murphy a quarterback we've seen a very solid defensive effort tonight for Duke we we've looked at their schedule this is a team that you know maybe feels a little bit slighted picked 11 out of 17 teams after really good years the last couple of Seasons I think people were looking at a new coaching staff they were looking at all the new faces and and maybe underestimating Duke at least that's what they want to tell us why not little chip on your shoulder doesn't hurt in the motivation uh category you know so you can you can carry that chip that's okay and I'm sure they will and I'm sure they talk about it Jack burkowitz is going to try to get Elon on athletic and the FCS yeah I think so I I I really like his Squad and I really like the job that he's done here again hopefully he can stay healthy and not get too many injuries here moving forward Kelly creat all the coaches and Duke's going to have another possession here final seconds and then they're going to start looking forward to Northwestern next week and go on the road for the first time this season they got Yukon and then they've got a trip to Middle Tennessee State in Murphy's Boro Tennessee of course that's where Manny Diaz was a defensive coordinator early on in his coaching career so that'll be an interesting little trip talked about him starting ACC play at the end of September against North Carolina the bed Rivals this Northwestern game will be a really good game a good measuring stick yeah they need to practice and keep growing and keep keep developing Manny Diaz wins his first game as head coach 14 26-3 the final he told us just love the student athlete here at Duke the makeup of the kids that he's honored to work with you know this is not just any school it takes a certain intellect it takes a certain athlete to be successful here at Duke and Manny thinks that he can get these players to thrive I think it's called a student athlete and uh these these players come here they want this degree and they want this education it's meaningful and they want to play highlevel football and they are in the ACC and they're going to they have a chance to become a really good football program why not get the best of both worlds and you can do that here at Duke and that's attractive to a lot of people and a lot of [Music] players Riley Leonard left for Notre Dame there were some Blue Devil fans who were really disappointed when hearing that news but a couple of weeks after that announcement it's Malik Murphy the backup in Texas deciding to come to Durham and he puts up career numbers tonight in his Blue Devil debut 26 for 40 291 yds couple of touchdowns did have the interception and just a few overthrows from probably being close to 400 yd passing he had some long balls tonight steo that just missed yeah they really did and uh had they been connected you know uh they would have been incredibly explosive but as I said earlier I do think that they have to go back this week and really pay attention to the consistency in their run game cuz as the opponents get better they're going to need that piece of their offense and they know that let's go down to Justin who's with Coach coach Diaz congrats on the victory nearly pitched a shut out 16 tackles for a loss what impressed you most about your defensive effort today defensive line was dominant you know we want to play vertically you never know in game one are they really going to understand it and get it I'd say they understood it and um we're hard to run the ball against and then just quarterback was under Relentless pressure and um and really gave our offense a chance to throw into the game the offense really started to find their Rhythm and you told us Malik Murphy he has the it Factor he can make throws that others can't what did you like about his debut Duke what I liked is that we never panicked right you know we we we you know we're on sitting on three points for a while and you can start to get frustrated and start to force things and we just understood just stay after it stay after stay after the big plays will come we finally hit some we still have missed some there's more to come and the guys are going to see that film and they're going to be encouraged to know that how close we were to really a dominant performance it's also your debut congrats on the first Victory how are you going to celebrate this one with the cigar what you going to Rich basketball [Music] history don't let him get those open looks either not to mention the crazies dig a little deeper and there's some fascinating detail when I'm here I see something I hadn't seen before there are unusual campgrounds Unique Sounds and these guys live on campus Durham is home to one of America's most famous minor league teams and a thriving food scene oh my God as well as its share of challenges I've got three days in two nights to explore pre-day weekend is in Durham North Carolina get ready Blue Devils Durham sits in the heart of North Carolina's Research Triangle it's the state's fourth largest city and growing fast it's also home to one of the South's top rest Resturant scenes D is definitely a foodie Town tons of restaurants saltbox seafood joint is the perfect example it's got some unique fish I opened saltbox seafood joint in October 2012 the intention was to bring North Carolina seafood to the middle part of the state the quality is unparalleled in my opinion the goal here at saltbox elevating old Coastal recipes that people have forgotten about and bringing them forward I come here 45 minutes just to get a delicious catfish [Music] sandwich one of my signature dishes it's a shrimp roll I grew up in eastern North Carolina eating shrimp burgers so I wanted to do a little riff cuz I'm a lobster roll fan cuz I knew you're from Boston so I bring it to together and so I had a baby all right so here's what it is this is good North Carolina Shrimp here right I'm going to put it in my seasoned breader here give it a little kick and I toss it around so I put it in the fryer here in she goes beautiful ooh it smells incredible that smells good they're nicely curled right you know I mean all right so for me these shrimp are done okay nice soft and tender now what I do is I season my bread everything to me needs to be seasoned I season the shrimp as well Jess look at this boom a spice rub that I created that for me appeals to Seafood preparations okay put it right down in there okay now we garnish it this is a SLO that is not mayonnaise based also make a lemon oil I know I'm being all cheffy but these little touches to something that's very fundamental that's what makes this dish you know memorable in that is beautiful look at that look at that see that that's what's supposed to happen right there a shrimp is supposed to Cascade out and you and you get it later raining from Heaven that's right you'll get that later oh this is tasty [Music] beautiful Duke's campus is home to two hotels one is connected to an academic their jaw drops they're just Gob smacked I've seen people walk in the door and just burst into tears it is awe inspiring that's for sure it is Duke Chapel's formation was of vital importance to James Buchanan Duke son of the University's founder the chapel was the first thing he talked about it was the first building designed and it was the last one that was built the chapel is 210 ft tall the Nave is 291 ft long Mr Duke wanted very much to give students an opportunity to have a spiritual center and in fact this building is literally the center of the king campus the architect of the chapel is Julian AEL he was the first African-American to graduate from architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in 1902 he actually never visited Duke's campus because he was staunchly against Jim Crow in segregation we have a plaque dedicated to him now in the norx what makes these windows unique in all 77 Windows all of the major figures in the Bible the larger windows up top are all Old Testament the ones below are New Testament depending on the season of the year and the time of the day you get extraordinary light effects in [Music] here to get married at Duke Chapel you have to be a student a staff member or an Alum or the child or grandparent of one of those was the only place I wanted to get married you walk down the Nave you look at the gorgeous buttresses on the ceiling and you just feel that you are part of something [Music] bigger this is my favorite part of the Duke Chapel it's the called the Memorial Chapel and it actually wasn't in the original plans I think it's so beautiful cuz it's so different I just find it so contemplative we're going inside the bell tower of Duke University Chapel there are 50 bronze bells up here the largest of which that one is 5 1/2 tons that's incredible that's insane yeah there's a lot of metal up there they don't swing around in rotation they they're fixed in place and when you depress a key here this cable goes up and pulls The Clapper and so that's what strikes yeah Jess you are going to strike the hour no way no way you'll strike it five times you play with a half open fist so you sort of cup the side of the Baton and out for tickets to men's home basketball [Music] [Music] game I think I'm a little early I've met a lot of animals on my 3-day weekends in ACC College towns goats easy ladies horses llamas even a sloth who paints the animals waiting for me in the middle of the Duke Forest are unlike anything I've ever seen seeing them like roaming around in the forest here is so unique I absolutely love it here it's one of the coolest places [Music] lemurs are primates they evolved long before monkeys long before Apes long before humans so they're really our most ancient ancestor and they're found in the wild only on the island of Madagascar we welcome tens of thousands of visitors every year you can on a walking with lemur tour so you can actually go out in the forest with the free ranging animals there are no barriers between you and the animals and you can't touch them they're wild animals but you can watch them just leaping through the trees here in North Carolina doing what lemur I've never met a lemur before yeah they're incredible we have more here at Duke that anywhere in the world outside of yeah so there about 220 lur on the [Music] site the Lemur Center was founded in the 1960s as a collaboration between two researchers and they were talking and they were like wow wouldn't it be cool to bring these lemurs to Juke Forest our lemur research focuses on two aspects one is how can we better care for these animals here in captivity and in the wild in Madagascar and also because these animals are primates are there things that we can learn from lemurs that could also have applications to humans this is the most advanced lemur Hospital in the world um researching lemur pregnancy it's an opportunity unlike anywhere else in the country I'm currently looking at social behaviors and captive lemurs hi oh my goodness they are so cute as a group lemurs are the most IND dangered group of vertebrates on [Music] Earth there is no place on earth like the Duke lemur Center we are completely unique to Duke and completely unique to Durham definitely a must SE spot the Lemur native Madagascar is about 1,000 mil from the African country of Zimbabwe Zimbabwe is the birthplace of Chef zelli Williams today she and her husband Leonardo serve her native cuisine in Durham I came to America about 24 years ago and I just fell in love you know with Durham I fell in love with the people in Durham and I just you know this is now home we open a nation's first first Zimbabwean restaurant we didn't know it was the first until after we started looking for [Applause] [Music] [Applause] help aaya means home in Zulu I'm from Zimbabwe as well and so having a place to come to where you can enjoy some foods that remind you of Home nobody else offers there we have two dishes the first one we have a Doby rice bow Doby in my language it means peanut butter peanut butter creates these velvety creamy textures that you won't even know there's peanut butter in it I love peanut butter do you incorporate peanut butter into a lot of your recipes yes mixing rice with peanut butter it's like that's something that you don't see here and you know it's so delicious I I love [Music] it there is so much happening with this I love the little crispy outside the tender rice inside you're right I don't know that peanut butter is overtly in there it's like smooth and creamy but also a little bit spicy yum it's really interesting to see like such a small restaurant as zois is doing amazing world class food with International flavors oh my God this is a Botti this is a South African dish made with a ground beef mix at the bottom and an egg costard on top traditionally served with yellow [Music] rice that is incredibly spiced the fragrance and the flavor of the spices
