Introduction >> ♪ >> Jim: FROM THE HEART OF PHILLY THIS IS CBS NEWS PHILADELPHIA. BRAZEN ACT OF VANDALISM. WHERE THIS MAN WAS CAPTURED ON CAMERA STOMPING IN WINDSHIELDS AND SMASHING THEM WITH PAINT CANS. >> Jan: AND IT IS A NEXT WEATHER ALERT DAY. SO, GET READY FOR TEMPERATURES THAT WILL FEEL LIKE THE TRIPLE DIGITS. AND GRANT WILL LET US KNOW WHEN STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS COULD HIT YOUR AREA. >> Jim: AND EXTREME HEAT MEANS STUDENTS IN 63 SCHOOLS IN PHILADELPHIA WILL GET TO GO HOME EARLY AGAIN TODAY. THOSE ADJUSTMENTS BEING MADE FOR SCHOOL BUILDINGS WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING. GOOD MORNING, WELCOME TO THE NEWS AT 7:00 STREAMING ON CBS NEWS PHILADELPHIA AND ON PHILLY57. I'M JIM DONOVAN. >> Jan: I'M JAN CARABEO IN NEXT Weather FOR JANELLE BURRELL. THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US TODAY. LOTS TO GET TO BUT FIRST LET'S GET RIGHT TO OUR NEXT WEATHER FORECAST WITH METEOROLOGIST GRANT GILMORE WHO IS IN FOR KATE TODAY. HE'S IN THE NEXT WEATHER VIRTUAL STUDIO TRACKING ALL THIS HEAT AND POSSIBLE SEVERE STORMS. >> Grant: ALL THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY IS GOING TO BE THE FUEL TO CHARGE SOME OF THESE STORMS THAT DEVELOP ACROSS THE AREA LATER TODAY. LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR WEDNESDAY. WE HAVE THE NEXT WEATHER ALERT BUT ALL IS CALM ACROSS THE AREA RIGHT NOW. YIT WON'T BE UNTIL LUNCHTIME WHEN THAT HEAT WILL REALLY START TO BE NOTICEABLE. AT LEAST THAT EXTREME AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HEAT THAT WILL TAKE US THROUGH THE AFTERNOON BUT INTO THE EVENING HOURS, WE'LL WATCH THAT THREAT FOR SOME STRONG STORMS WITH DAMAGING WINDS BEING THE PRIMARY CONCERN BUT I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF WE GET SOME HAIL WITHIN SOME OF THOSE STRONGER STORMS AND OF COURSE HEAVY RAINFALL AND FREQUENT LIGHTNING. I MENTION LUNCHTIME. THAT'S WHEN WE HAVE TO REALLY START BEING AWARE OF THE DANGEROUS HEAT OUTSIDE. FEELS-LIKE TEMPERATURES UP AROUND THE TRIPLE DIGITS AND THEN THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS WE'LL WATCH FOR THE STORMS TO ROLL IN FROM THE NORTH AND WEST. HIGH TEMPERATURES AROUND 97 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON MUCH THAT'S HOT BUT AGAIN, IT'S WHAT IT FEELS LIKE OUT THERE, RIGHT. LOOK AT THESE FEELS-LIKE TEMPERATURES AS WE MAKE OUR WAY HOUR BY HOUR THROUGHOUT THE DAY. ONE OF ZERO THREE BY 3 O'CLOCK, 108 DEGREES BY 5 O'CLOCK THIS AFTERNOON. THAT'S WHAT IT FEELS LIKE BUT THIS IS WHAT IT IS RIGHT NOW AS WE START OFF YOUR WEDNESDAY MORNING. DOWN THE SHORE, TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE LOW AND MID 70s. ACROSS SOUTH JERSEY, MILLVILLE YOU'RE IN THE LOW 70s. PHILADELPHIA WE'RE RIGHT AROUND 73 DEGREES. YOU SEE A LITTLE CLOUD COVER OFF IN THE DISTANCE. WE'RE HOPING FINGERS CROSSED THAT CLOUD COVER HELPS MODERATE THE TEMPERATURES JUST A LITTLE BIT BUT CHANDLER I DON'T THINK THERE'S GOING TO BE ANY ESCAPING THE HEAT AS WE GO INTO THIS AFTERNOON. JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS WHERE YOU JUST NEED TO TAKE IT EASY DRINK PLENTY WATER STAY HYDRATED AND WE'LL GET THROUGH NEXT Traffic IT BECAUSE THERE'S MUCH COOLER WEATHER ON THE WAY AS WE HEAD TOWARDS THE WEEKEND. >> Chandler: THANK YOU GRANT. THIS MORNING AS YOU TRAVEL OUT WE'RE LOOKING PRETTY GOOD EVEN THOUGH IT IS STEAMY, IT'S GOING TO BE STICKY. NOT THE BEST DAY BUT ROAD CONDITIONS OFF TO A NICE START. BEN FRANKLIN BRIDGE NICE AND QUIET AS YOU TRAVEL PAST THE TOLLS IN JERSEY. TRAVELING INTO THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, VISIBILITY LOOKING GOOD AS WELL. YOU CAN SEE THE ENTIRE PHILLY SKYLINE, NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT ON THE BEN. BUT THE BURLINGTON BRISTOL IS SCHEDULED FOR AN OPENING IN ABOUT A LITTLE LESS THAN 10 MINUTES RIGHT NOW. THIS IS FOR A NORTHBOUND SHIP THAT PREVIOUSLY OPENED THE TACONY-PALMYRA SO THE BRIDGE IS ABOUT TO GO ON STANDBY. IF YOU'RE TRAVELING OUT MAYBE USE THE AREA BRIDGES, YOU HAVE THE TURNPIKE CONNECTOR AND ALL OF OUR SOUTHERN BRIDGES PAST THE BURLINGTON BRISTOL. OVER TO EAST NOTTINGHAM WE ARE STILL FOLLOWING A SERIOUS CRASH INVOLVING A CEMENT TRUCK AND ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS HAS A STRETCH OF CHRISTINE ROAD CURRENTLY CLOSED BETWEEN ROUTE 1 AND CEMETERY ROAD. EMERGENCY CREWS ARE ON SCENE. THERE'S A MESS IN THE ROADWAY, JUST THE VEHICLES ARE COMPLETELY DAMAGED. THEY WILL NEED TO BE TOWED AWAY. THAT ROUTE 1 SOUTHBOUND OFF RAMP IS CLOSED FROM CHRISTINE ROAD. YOU HAVE BALTIMORE PIKE 473 THAT WILL BE YOUR ALTERNATE. WATCH OUT FOR CONSTRUCTION THAT JOINED US FOR THE MORNING OVER IN MOUNT HOLLY ON THE NEW Dangerous heat in Philadelphia JERSEY TURNPIKE SOUTHBOUND NEAR BURLINGTON-MOUNT HOLLY ROAD JIM. >> Jim: THANK YOU, CHANDLER. 63 PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS WILL HAVE EARLY DISMISSALS FOR THE SECOND DAY IN A ROW IN RESPONSE TO TODAY'S DANGEROUS TEMPERATURES. >> Jan: CBS NEWS PHILADELPHIA'S ROSS DiMATTEI IS AT THE ART MUSEUM WITH THAT AND SOME ADVICE. >> Reporter: ANOTHER DAY OF DANGEROUS HEAT AND HUMIDITY ON TAP FOR US HERE IN PHILADELPHIA TODAY. THAT'S PROBABLY WHY WE'RE SEEING SO MANY RUNNERS AND FITNESS ENTHUSIASTS GETTING AN EARLY MORNING WORKOUT IN BEFORE THE SUN ACTUALLY RISES. TAKE A LOOK BEHIND ME. WE'VE SEEN A LOT OF RUNNERS, A LOT OF PEOPLE UTILIZING THE WORLD FAMOUS ART MUSEUM STEPS AS ROCKY ONCE DID TO GET THAT MORNING WORKOUT IN BEFORE IT GETS INTO THE UPPER 90s AND WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THE HUMIDITY, IT IS GOING TO FEEL LIKE TRIPLE DIGITS OUT HERE. THE HEAT HAS BEEN BRUTAL AND IT'S ALSO TAKING A TOLL ON STUDENTS AND PARENTS. YESTERDAY THOUSANDS OF KIDS WERE DISMISSED EARLY BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE HEAT AND INADEQUATE COOLING AT SCHOOLS AND THAT'S GOING TO BE THE CASE ONCE AGAIN TODAY. BACK IN 2021 THE SCHOOL DISTRICT LAUNCHED PLANS TO UPGRADE ACCESS TO AIR CONDITIONING AT ALL OF ITS SCHOOLS BUT 63 STILL LACK PROPER COOLING. WE DID SPEAK WITH PARENTS THAT ACKNOWLEDGED AIR CONDITIONING IS NECESSARY ON DAYS LIKE TODAY BUT EARLY DISMISSAL FORCED A LOT OF THEM TO CANCEL PLANS OR LEAVE WORK EARLY. IF YOU'RE PLANNING TO SPEND ANY TIME OUTDOORS IN THIS HEAT WE SPOKE WITH AN EXPERT WHO RECOMMENDS DRINKING A LOT OF WATER EVEN IF YOU DON'T FEEL THIRSTY AND WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING OUT IT'S OKAY TO TAKE IT EASY. >> MAYBE TAKE OUT THE HEAVY CARDIO STUFF. OUR WORKOUT WE'RE NOT DOING ANY STAIRS TODAY. 'CAUSE THAT'S -- WE DON'T WANT ANYONE'S HEART RATE TO GET UP HIGH, WE DON'T WANT THEM TO FALL OVER IF THEY GET A LITTLE DIZZY. A LOT OF WORKOUT IS GOING TO BE FOCUSED ON SLOW MOVEMENTS. GET YOUR BODY ENGAGED, MAYBE WORK ON BALANCE BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IF YOU START FEELING LIGHTHEADED IF YOUR HEART RATE GOES UP TOO HIGH TOO QUICKLY YOU'RE CLOSE TO THE GROUND YOU'RE ABLE TO ADJUST THE PACE OF HOW QUICKLY YOU'RE MOVING. >> Reporter: 63 PHILADELPHIA SCHOOLS DISMISSING EARLY TODAY BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE HEAT AND INADEQUATE COOLING IN THOSE BUILDINGS. WE HAVE A FULL LIST OF ALL OF Keeping pets safe in hot temps THOSE SCHOOLS ON OUR WEB SITE AT CBSPHILADELPHIA.COM. BACK TO YOU. >> Jim: THANK YOU ROSS. IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO PROTECT YOUR PETS DURING THIS SIZZLING HEAT. THE PENNSYLVANIA SPCA ANIMAL ADVOCATE CAROL ERICKSON RECOMMENDS ADJUSTING WALK TIMES TO WEATHER CONDITIONS, FINDING SHADE TAKING BREAKS BEWARE OF HOT ASPHALT. KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE BY BRINGING WATER ALONG FOR WALKS AND USING COLLARS AND LEASHES THAT ARE COMFORTABLE. CAROL SAYS IF A DOG SLOWS DOWN LIMPS TRIES TO SIT OR LIE DOWN Air quality alert OR WHIMPERS THE WALK SHOULD END IMMEDIATELY. >>> RISING TEMPERATURES CAN MAKE AIR BECOME STAGNANT AND CAUSE OZONE AND AIR AIR POLLUTION TO RISE. IT CAN LEAD TO A HAZY SCENE. BOTH THE PENNSYLVANIA AND THE NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION DECLARED TODAY A CODE ORANGE. THAT INDICATES UNHEALTHY POLLUTION LEVELS FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS SO IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA OR OTHER BREATHING RELATED ISSUES IT'S BEST TO STAY INSIDE TODAY. >>> NEXT WEATHER MEANS NO SURPRISES OUR NEXT WEATHER TEAM IS KEEPING YOU UP TO DATE ON THE EXTREME HEAT ON THE AIR STREAMING ON OUR WEB SITE West Oak Lane fire PHILADELPHIA COM/WEATHER. >> Jan: ALSO FOLLOWING BREAKING NEWS FROM WEST OAK LANE OVERNIGHT WHERE A THREE STORY ROW HOME WAS BADLY DAMAGED IN A FIRE. THAT FIRE STARTED JUST BEFORE 11:30 LAST NIGHT. FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO GET THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL IN JUST ABOUT 30 MINUTES. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS HURT AND THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS Firefighter memorial destroyed in fire STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. >>> AND THE NORRISTOWN FIRE CHIEF'S MEMORIAL WAS DESTROYED IN AN EARLY MORNING FIRE. THE NORRISTOWN FIRE DEPARTMENT SHARED THESE PHOTOS ON FACEBOOK. THIS FIRE STARTED AFTER 1:30 THIS MORNING. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT SAYS THE STRUCTURE THERE HAD BEEN STANDING FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS. ITS PURPOSE WAS TO REMEMBER THE HUNDREDS OF FIREFIGHTERS 4 shot in Kensington WHO HAVE SERVED THE COMMUNITY. >>> A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN IS FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE AFTER FOUR PEOPLE WERE SHOT LAST NIGHT IN KENSINGTON. THE SHOOTING HAPPENED AROUND 9 F G STREET. POLICE SAY THE 20-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS SHOT SIX TIMES. TWO OTHER MEN AND A WOMAN WERE ALSO SHOT AND ARE NOW IN STABLE CONDITION. POLICE SAY NO WEAPONS HAVE BEEN RECOVERED AND NO ARRESTS Nicolas Elizalde lawsuit HAVE BEEN MADE. >> Jim: THE MOTHER OF A 14-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED OUTSIDE OF ROXBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL IN 2022 IS NOW SUING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA AND THE PENNSYLVANIA INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION. NICHOLAS AND FIVE OTHERS WERE LEAVING. ATTORNEYS FOR NICHOLAS' MOTHER SAY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS DO THE PROVIDE ADEQUATE SECURITY TO "PREVENT FORESEEABLE AND KNOWN RISKS OF GUN VIOLENCE." IN A SEPARATE LAWSUIT ATTORNEYS ACCUSE THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OF NEGLIGENCE. WE'VE REACHED OUT TO BOTH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE PIAA Car vandalism caught on video FOR COMMENT AND ARE WAITING TO HEAR BACK. >>> TAKE A LOOK AT THIS. PHILADELPHIA POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR THIS MAN CAUGHT ON CAMERA STOMPING ON SEVERAL CAR WINDSHIELDS IN CENTER CITY. THIS HAPPENED YESTERDAY ALONG SPRUCE STREET. ANOTHER VIDEO SHOWED THE MAN DANCING ON THE CARS. THE DAMAGE STRETCHED FROM NINTH TO 11TH STREETS. >> I HEARD LIKE A SMASH AND I SAW HIM JUMP ON THE CAR RIGHT THERE AND THEN LIKE GRAB MY PHONE AND TRIED TO TAKE A VIDEO AS QUICK AS I COULD. >> I JUST LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON, SEE WHAT THE WEATHER WAS LIKE AND I SAW THAT MY WINDSHIELD WAS SMASHED. THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT NOW BUT I JUST HOPE I CAN GET IT FIXED. >> Jim: DESPITE THE VANDALISM RESIDENTS SAY THEY STILL FEEL SAFE AND THEY STILL LOVE WHERE THEY LIVE. IF Y
