COVID-19 Cases Surging on Capitol Hill Among Congress Members, Civil Servants

we've learned at least another dozen architect of the capitol employees the rank and file civil servants here have tested positive so two have at least four more capital police officers and several more contractors in the cannon building the case numbers here are rising and so too are the complaints about covet 19 precautions coveted 19 is reaching the highest ranks here the longest serving republican in the u.s senate 87 year old charles grassley and the longest-serving member of the u.s house 87-year-old don young have both announced they've tested positive and on the senate floor this tense exchange about masks start by asking the presiding officer to please wear a mask as he speaks and people below him are i can't tell you what to do but i know that the behavior i don't wear a mask when i'm speaking like most senators well i'm most sensitive i don't need your instruction from i know you don't need my instruction but i there clearly isn't much interest in this body in public health in recent weeks we have seen more frequent mask wearing in and around the capitol yet among the civil servants the case numbers are growing now at least 56 u.s capitol police officers have tested positive since march nearly as many architected the capital workers and at least 37 contractors working on the cannon house office building restoration the police union says officers must seek testing in the community today the house speaker issued new guidance urging members not to congregate and leave after they vote and though testing is more available here now than it was congressman rodney davis says it should have been required here months ago we can get better to and closer to perfect i'd certainly like to see the testing open up to members of the media and especially the thousands of house staffers who make this campus operate the newly elected members of congress have arrived here for orientation but they moved the orientation to a nearby hotel out of the capitol as a safety precaution but they'll very much be in the capital when the new session begins in january scott mcfarland news 4.
