field that penalty declined second down out on the road so a little trickeration got him that time they weren didn't quite line it up right they got a quick first down but then on the first down of another year or so because yeah he's a good coach no doubt about it especially a defensive mind and the way the defense has played here tonight outstanding 15 tackles for loss the most for Duke since 20 seven he's a heck of a football coach he did a great job at Miami and yes they probably should have gave him a little more time but he's got another chance here and he is going to do great things here at Duke I really believe that so you've been a head coach you had stops at Temple Boston College Colorado state after the first game of the season any season what's what's the most important thing that you have to do when you go into talk to your players I think you want to walk in that locker room and you want to you want to talk about the positive things that happen on that field and make them feel good about the work that they did hey we got a lot of work to do but these were some great things that we got done now we'll have time next to watch the film and we'll we'll keep growing on the things we have to improve on but you want them to feel good about the work they got through preseason camp and be honest just just be positive honest is what I would say like one of my takeaways I think they need to run the ball just a little bit more consistently at the end they got some good runs but through the B Belly of the game they could do a little better there but I like I like the makings of this offense and I really like what he's doing right now with this football program new quarterback in for Elon Matthew Downing is out Jack salapek transfer from Western Michigan in there at the controls now this is ran Baker gets away gets into plus territory across the 50 yd line yeah and Malik Murphy you know there a lot of hype around this guy coming into Durham no doubt a big armed Talent wants to work a little bit on the accuracy Noel I think so you know I think just a little bit more on on the touch and the tempo of his throws but you can see he has a big arm but again he hasn't played a lot of football and so this is every every game every week is is going to he's going to grow and and and what you'll see in the next three weeks hopefully is tremendous development out of out of your quarterback in the leag Murphy I'm sure Manny and staff will talk about that [Applause] tomorrow there's Malik [Applause] Murphy as we get to the two-minute timeout there are the numbers for Malik almost 300 yd passing a career high we step aside into coaches in in America it's been the last two years as Penn State's defensive coordinator said it was going to take the right job to leave Happy Valley and very happy with taking over here at Duke as will Langford former quarterback who they trying to turn into a wide receiver get it inside for 35 yd line Elon good place to be it's a good place to be don't ever don't ever feel anything when you win like don't Embrace that embrace it you can always correct the mistakes you know you can always attack all the defense's effort tonight he was the defensive coordinator of Texas State last year help the Bobcats get to the program's first bowl game but he's got a he's got a history with with Manny Diaz uh wanted to reconnect with Manny in a meaningful way and and he is excited to be in Durham and looks like he's got a lot to work with here in 2024 he's done a great job you know we've talked a lot about Manny here in defense justifiably and rightly so but he is a really good young football coach and he's done a heck of a job with this defensive unit and I'm sure he's another rising star in this business I think both coordinators for Duke did a great job and and and I think the coach is at Elon did a great job I really want to give a lot of credit to them to their staff and to their players they they fought really hard here tonight and elon's going to call a timeout it's been fun has it clay it's great to have college football back and so many things to talk about with this Duke football program and we've seen Murphy at quarterback we've seen a very solid defensive effort tonight for Duke we we've looked at their schedule this is a team that you know maybe feels a little bit slighted picked 11 out of 17 teams after really good years the last couple of Seasons I think people were looking at a new coaching staff they were looking at all the new faces and and maybe underestimating Duke at least that's what they want to tell us why not little chip on your shoulder doesn't hurt in the motivation uh category you know so you can you can carry that chip that's okay and I'm sure they being elevated the head coach when cetti left for James Madison now of course he's the head coach at Indiana I mean that's a program that has kept the coaching staff together for a long time they' got some talented players it's going to be a team to be reckoned with in the coastal athletic in the FCS yeah I think so I I I really like his Squad and I really like the job that he's done here again hopefully he can stay healthy and not get too many injuries here moving forward right now from this game but uh he's done a heck of a [Applause] job Tony's the Northeast guy coach at New Hampshire went to Springfield College Manchester New Hampshire like Ryan Day Danny Mullen Chip Kelly cre the coaches and Duke's going to have another possession here final seconds and then they're going to start looking forward to Northwestern next week go on the road for the first time this season they got Yukon and then they've got a trip to Middle Tennessee State in Murphy's Boro Tennessee of course that's where Manny Diaz was def coordinator early on in his coaching career so that'll be an interesting little trip talked about him starting ACC play at the end of September against North Carolina
