and he's grinding see if the Spartans can come up with a play here and force a field goal attempt the Hornets have been great on third down four of five bring this up again K Bennett with the ball in his hands as a runner he's under Center and it's Cs and he is close waiting for a signal he is not in it's going to be fourth down call it call it a foot foot and a half what do you think I mean you winning it they're putting so much pressure on Brown he's going to be uncomfortable back there just doing a nice job of being more physical than their opponent right now third down for the Spartans the replay he got across the 35 they may take another look at this too that that that spot is at least a half yard yeah we can take another look at this here too but I want to let everyone know so that comes from upstairs almost all the reviews we'll have in college football come from upstairs a coach can challenge but there's no reason for him to because he can lose lose a timeout almost all utilize up to 18 tablets to help with in-game adjustment something we've seen for years on NFL Sidelines it's something that every coach we've talked to this week has been really excited about Coach Ken from San Jose State in fact consulted with a few NFL coaches to figure out how to best take advantage of it coaches and players get to look at three different feeds of the game and that's it fellas no browsing the internet and no checking out darius's latest Instagram post oh I have to love that my problem would be buying shoes on that thing they have a lot of charges on that uh on that tablet but it's it is exciting at the college level we did we have seen it in the pros and what the difference is is you actually get to see live plays so you get to see live looks usually you'd have to go off to the sideline and someone would have to tell you what happened if you see still shots later they're getting it much faster now love them using the technology in the Collegiate game first Nick Nash I guarantee you that was not the design of the play nice job by Brown getting the ball out but yeah it looked like that was going to Nick Nash and trean was just in the vicinity of the ball I mean Nash would have made an easy catch an easy catch for him sometimes it's tough though with those routes on the outside when you're close that's why the splits are so critical from the line of scrimmage second and 10 Brown coming out this time it is caught hurry with it and he's in a hurry gets in to Hornet territory 27 y on the throw and [Applause] catch easy pitching catch here for em and brown he throws the ball right out of the break that's a timing route Ari right out of the break that ball is in hurry's hands and up again the Spartans are trying to play fast they want to continue to play Fast they're right up on the line again trying to to snap the football as quickly as [Applause] possible brown with oh lost the football he just literally an empty hand it just came out he's really fortunate there the ball stay right there L of 13 yards on the play just don't normally see that happen not sure if the ball is slippery or what he's lucky to get on it and to regain in the first quarter for the Spartans they just continue it was the high snaps first and now these self-inflicted wounds are the problem in the story for the first half for the Spartans set up the screen here talk with it makes a guy Miss and he gets it to the 43 yard line gain of 17 nice job bringing it back to Third and manageable they haven't run the screen all day one of my favorite plays in all of the Playbook do you see Malik Williams there 70 that tackle you're a DB and you see him coming you might want to make a business decision he is a smart player and a physical player too Jabari Bates now in it running back this is a manageable third down now third and six Brown they bring pressure they pick it up brown and it's incomplete I believe the tight end fell down there not sure if there was contact in the middle of the field during the route I think that was Jackson Kanan 85 see Jackson he's going to come across the middle of the field running a crossing right he ran into the other the other linebacker there he got tripped up all right they're going to go for it here or they're at least going to show they're going to go for it on fourth down Brown looking to the sideline and they're going to use timeout they're going to talk this over go neam matalo wasn't sure what they wanted to do he says hey let's take a second let's catch our breath and decide if we want to go for on fourth down I wish they would have had you on hard KNX all right they decide to punt it and that is a good kick and it is going to be down at the 10 yd line best Logic the punter did a nice job there a little bit of spin on it 33 yds on the punts well the Spartans had a decent Drive working there it's stalls and now the Hornets with a 10-point lead and the football a little more than seven minutes to go in the first half I've been impressed with Kaden Bennett nine of 15 71 yards those nine completions have gone to five different receivers and Al Oliver 15 carries 88 yards and two touchdowns he has been the star for the Hornets so far he really has and if you're Donell pump Frey the running back coach for the Hornets you got to be excited about what your back is doing and that's a name we need to talk about cuz you and I have seen him that guy defense is to heck of a running back for San Diego State that's running back you Karan borders the ball carrier and he comes up with seven yards they continue to win the battle up front when they've wanted to run the football on first down they've had a lot of success it's such a luxury for an offensive coordinator and a signal caller when you can the Playbook has just open up because the the line of scrimmage you're winning it every time and especially on those first downs cuz like second down right now you could take a shot if you wanted to they're going to keep it on the ground and that's enough for a first down bord another carry the red shirt freshman from Sacramento if you're wondering how far apart Sacramento is from San J it's about a 2hour Drive Northeast of San Jose so a lot of these guys no each other from playing Pop Warner football playing youth football playing High School football Allstar camps cuz these two cities not very far apart and you have a lot of respect for the other guys too so you kind of understand Tendencies and know which guy goes to which High School Spartans are threatening to come and here they come Bennett with the pressure on him no place to go he'll be sacked a great Blitz that time Robert rahime another play the rocket he has made his presence felt in the first half he really does have some great closing speed but we've been waiting on the Spartans to dial up the pressure all out Blitz that time no one there to take on that's actually the running back Ari Karan borders number 14 he's got to be the last line of defense to give Bennett just a little bit more time sets up a second and long not a whole lot that an offensive coordinator can call at this stage set up the screen to borders and he has tripped up another great defensive play Rivas makes another play we've called his name several times loss of three on the play and I got a feeling they're going to be pretty conservative here on Third and 19 yeah not really much you could do with this days but to try to get back some of the yardage play the field position game but the aggressive nature of the Spartans on defense has changed in this series it's paying off for him across the middle it's Grover across the 20 and he's hit hard they get it just past the original line of scrimmage 11 yds on the play a good job there the pressure pressure from the Spartans they got the big play that pushed them way back and they have dialed up the pressure now you were talking about it early and it's had an impact it makes a massive difference on a lot of these series when in early Downs you put pressure on the quarterback just get them behind the chains you want him in second and long third and long the pressure sometimes can help you do that so great to see it if you're a Spartan fan they're dialing up the aggressions McGuff to punt Coleman Waits at his own 33 and a flag comes in before the start of the play I believe the play clock we're going to have delay a game delay game offense 5 y penalty made fourth [Applause] down really feels like the the Spartans could use some sort of spark some kind of turnover block the punt they need something to energize this team that's a really good punt Coleman all the way back to his own 30 gets a block trying to get to the outside and that abounds at the 32 yd line a 52 yard punt two yards on the return the commissioner of the mount West is here we're going to get a chance to talk to her there is Gloria navaris she's been on the job now for more than a year and a half just the second commissioner in the history of the conference Craig Thompson was the initial commissioner he decided to retire he was instrumental in trying to push for a college football playoff that involved more teams he'd been pushing for a 12 team playoff for more than a decade uh what a great leader he was for the conference but really excited to get a chance to talk to Gloria lots of exciting things happening with the conference and we'll talk with her about a lot of the new coaches and the opportunity for the Mountain West to get into the college football playoff we'll talk to her just before the start of the third quarter quter Jabari Bates and Bates makes a couple guys miss that's a terrific carry on first down gets it across the 40 picks up nine yards on receiver's got a step tries to make a one-handed catch he can't do it that's Justin lockart the team's just so happy that that lockart is back and able to play this year his speed he can really affect the defense and it almost looked like that was a miscommunication there on what route Lockett was supposed to run Brown was expecting him to be on the outside and his body so far inside it just makes it a really tough catch but he was wide open wide open Miss chance there for the [Applause] Spartans keep it on the ground chalk he pies up a yard it'll bring up third and nine The Hornet continuing to win that line of scrimmage battle Mason brusso 95 the defensive tackle there want to remind everyone that college football has made a significant change they have added a two-minute timeout at the end of the second quarter and at the end of the fourth quarter that certainly will affect a lot of coaches thinking and using timeouts earlier in a half cuz they know that they're going to have this timeout so we're at the two-minute timeout we've got a good one tonight Spartans trying to Rally they're down 10 is he going to do the saua will Victor do the saua well he didn't score but we need Nash to score I think if Nick Nash scores he's doing yeah he's going has a touchdown yeah and he did you're right you're right I guess I'll have to be touchdown number two brown on Third and long he's the field I believe that's Ethan Powell Ethan Powell 26 with the pick up the underneath up over the top nashes wide open goes get it boy that's interference and here comes the flag Nash versus Caleb Higgins there he's in the inside spot taking a slot taking a shot here got the defender this is just an underthrown Ball by EMT Bennett Nash doing a wonderful job of coming back still trying to make a here again Ari Nick Nash he's in the slot at the top of the screen he just has been running past [Applause] Defenders over there Brown he's going to scramble out to his right he's got a lot of room in front he's going to throw it on the run that was a great throw on the Run Justin lockart makes the catch nine yards on the play so one of the things that Coach Ken said they love about in the brown is his ability to get outside but also keep his eyes down field when a play breaks down nice job coming back with the catch third and short they throw it to the outside and it's incomplete decision time here Darius Walker 24 seconds you got fourth and short you look for the field goal and a tie game I think that probably makes the most sense tie the game up you got the momentum going into the second half anyway smart move by Coach K in my book Tyler Halverson will come on for the field goal attempt Halverson a senior from hanol Lulu last year 10 of 15 on field goal this to be a 39 yd attempt from the right hash [Applause] mark howon the kick is on the way and he missed it he hooked it to the left [Applause] he was kicking into the wind there that may have affected the [Applause] kick and the kick I can't believe we've only seen a half of football there has been all kinds of has just been that the Spartans just don't don't feel like they can get in a rhythm they get in a rhythm they have a couple of good plays and then hurt themselves they keep it on the ground and that I think will be the final play of the first half here at seq Stadium Darius what's your takeaway from the first half well not surprising I think that Sacramento state has come in and played their brand of footall in the first half it is surprising that they're winning the line of scrimmage on both sides that's a surprise to me as far as this game goes but the second half I mean it's anybody's game San Jose stateus just got to clean it up they got to clean it up well they played a much better second quarter than they did the first quarter so the Hornets will take a three-point lead to the locker room we're going to send it to the studio after the
