BREAKING: 5-star Safety Jonah Williams Commits to the Texas Longhorns

welcome to the inside Texas football YouTube channel powered by insidetexas.com I'm Joe Cook got Justin Wells we got some big big news to talk about today this one is one we've been waiting on for a while part of what we thought would be a fstar August for Texas and it is proving to be that way as five star safety Jonah Williams has committed to Texas Justin again another addition you're not bilocating you're there in Galveston uh getting the the latest from Jonah but we're getting this video ready uh because this may be one of the biggest additions in the 2025 cycle on the defensive side of the football for the long horns it it it definitely could be we're talking about the number 10 player in the Country Joe and Jonah Williams at 63 and a half 206 pounds he's just a just a ridiculous athlete in the secondary on the football field not to mention a pretty good baseball player on the diamond as well listen this recruitment it took it took some years off our age brother like you know some recruitments are easy I saw Ricky Stewart this week and and man that was about as smooth and as easy a recruitment as you can get and then you flip it over to the other side and you've got the Jonah Williams Saga listen this thing's been they've been doing this dance for over a year and honestly Texas was always kind of seemed like on the outside looking in for the most part at either point at some point Oklahoma Texas A&M LSU Oregon even USC had some sort of lead or some sort of momentum and this recruitment but give jonal Williams and his family a lot of credit they that they went through the process they were thorough this was an nil recruitment as well and so the these get pretty they can get complicated they can get complex but you know what Texas really needed this kid Jonah does so many things on the football field and the fact that he's likely gonna enroll early and miss his senior year of high school baseball I think is a very significant point that this is a football Recruitment and Texas is bringing in a festar safety you know I'll be a little bit specific about you you talk about outside looking in I think modify that a little bit there was always a top group with Jonah with Texas Texas A&M Oklahoma for some time uh USC Oregon and LSU that was always the top group I don't think Texas ever left that top group because I remember talking to him in the summer of 2023 uh when he came in for for a visit so Texas has always been here but I'm not sure if until the day it mattered most and and a little bit before then obviously as well that they were in at the top you know in the early parts of the winter and during the Spring we didn't really get the sense that that Texas was was at the top you know a bunch of schools kind of rotated uh but we have some you know Eric Nene wrote this back in March uh and this was Intel back when you know this was before official visits I don't even think Jonah ended up taking an official visit to Texas did take take an unofficial visit at the end of July but he said Eric said I caught up with one such person who does not think five star safety Jonah Williams is a foregone conclusion to Oklahoma which again kind of reiterates just how much this has uh gone a lot of different directions this person has always mentioned the baseball element as important and said Texas A&M and LSU all have a chance however this person leads towards Texas winning out in the end he told inside Texas that Texas is pushing very hard and Williams is being made to feel like a major priority the reshuffling of his position was important too for a long time you know Justin they they thought he may end up playing linebacker and I think they had Jeff Cho recruiting him for a good amount of time Blake Gideon moved into this recruitment as Eric mentions uh and he said baseball's also a necessary box to check in this Recruitment and Texas uh has given Williams support to play baseball so all that obviously borne out over the what is it five ensuing months um the Longhorns did all the right things and you know we don't always give the right assistant coach credit but Blake Gideon has worked really really really hard in this one and Steve sarkeesian I think when you have an offensive head coach like sarkeesian putting in a significant amount of effort with Jonah to let him know how much he's needed how much he's valued that goes a long way as well it does and you said it just a while ago you know this recruitment didn't really get started in the right gear because Jeff Cho and and the Texas staff Invision Jonah at linebacker and you were not going to get Jonah Williams selling him at linebacker that was a nonstarter and so that was one of the reasons I think Texas was kind of trying to to to keep up with with everybody in that Oklahoma was the was the prohibitive favorite for a while uh especially you know you know with baseball attached to it as well but ultimately you said it Blake Gideon really and Sark really prioritize this kid and you have to when you've got the nation's number one safety sitting in in in Galveston Texas you've got to go get him if you're the Texas Longhorns you can't let that guy leave the state hell you can't let that guy go to college station and I think that's you know one of the biggest wins listen just watching his clip this is a kid that can do so many things on either side of the ball he really is a ridiculous athlete from a family of athletes but I think you're right give Blake Gideon a lot of credit because he had to play catchup Joe when when Jeff Cho had had had began the foundation of that relationship and talking linebacker that's why I think this thing didn't really get kicked off for a while but I do want to give a lot of credit to Eric nlen because I was one of the biggest guys telling him whatever you're hearing is going against everything else we're hearing in this recruitment for months and months and there was one point I think in June where Eric thought you know I'm wondering how what this info is actually worth and then it wound up being true it wound up being accurate all of that that we had heard and that lined up with exactly how it turned out and so Jonah Williamson Texas give Blake Gideon a ton of credit man listen they've got that safety room in the last two and a half years has had a major jolt of athleticism from Derek Williams to gelani McDonald to Xavier Fain like that room now is very athletic you had a Jonah Williams that is ridiculous secondary heading into the SEC yeah he's a power five Prospect even on the other side of the ball I'm not sure these highlights include uh some offensive stuff but uh man I feel bad for this poor kid right here just can't go anywhere when you got Jonah Williams there to Corral you speaking of corralling getting all the info getting everything that you need to buy your dream home in the central Texas area that's Laura Baker that's who you need to and him enrolling early is going to obviously Show how he feels about the sport of football it's it's what he's going to come to Texas get a lot of attention for but baseball is also important uh our our our old friend Dustin mccomus and even his old uh teammate and now back at Texas Drew Bishop back when they were both working at five tool mentioned just how many how the skill that Jonah has and not only as a outfield player as a pitcher as well I know that schools all the time give players say they'll have the opportunity Jonah will really have the opportunity and I think there's some credit due to Jim schlossnagle in this recruitment as well it wasn't the deciding factor that's that's not what we're trying to apply but when when you have a box that needs to be checked Jim schlossnagle did his job to make sure it was checked and checked quickly absolutely you're not going to turn down a lefty that throws in the mid 90s SOS is too smart for that those guys at Texas know what what Jonah Williams can do give you a little background his brother Nick Williams was a major league baseball Prospect second round draft pick of the Texas Rangers wind up going to the Phillies in the Cole haml deal and so baseball's been in this in this family's blood and Jon is really good at it that that that that's a fact and so he's gonna actually you're right like he's gonna get an opportunity to to to play in in the spring time you know how long that transpires remains to be seen you know but it kind of reminds me of Kyler Murray's recruitment where people you know they didn't really understand that he was also a baseball Prospect and that well he's great at football so why is he paying attention to this because he was a firstr draft pick and the Oakland Ace dumped a ton of money on him you know so he was he was there for the right time and I think the timing is big for Jonah Williams right now I could see him you know making an an impact on the baseball team in the next few years and I think you got to tip your cap to Jim snagle on that honestly you know I thought A&M kind of had a lead when SL was the coach in College Station and they made that College World Series runnerup run I felt like that was one of the factors that was him leaning towards A&M with Sloss you put him in Austin they interact in Late July now Jonah Williams is a longhorn and he's the definition of a twoos sports star you know we we talked about five stars and you know we the the class was in the teens I think uh before Jonah committed um five stars help you move up the rankings quickly Texas now has khle Lockett uh they have obviously Jonah now there's two guys in Lance Jackson and Smith orogbo who could Skyrocket in the rankings this year and they're also in in strong contention uh on come August 30th for Jamie French so um right there before the season they could have three in the class if everything Cuts Tex's way could end up with maybe one or two more depending on uh some other you know recruiting development as we've learned that December is the month to really track in some recruiting developments and also Lance Jackson Smith orogbo um a few other players could could have really quality seasons and see themselves Skyrocket as well so um anybody who is concerned about rankings I think you're going to be okay uh you you can look at individual positions that's what I always recommend but if you're going to con be concerned about rankings wait till the the hay is in the barn and there's a lot more five-star quality hay in the barn now with Jonah Williams Justin anything else this is Big Joe inside Texas fans this is Big Texas fans this is big Jonah is a gigantic git don't unell this this is a big boost in this class that started in the teens a few days ago and they're going to slide into the to the middle of the top 10 over the next few days uh tip your cap to Sark tip your cap to Blake Gideon this recruitment like we said at the beginning it took it it it added a few more grays to the beard like I needed anymore but you know what it was exciting it was fun I'm having a blast in Galveston right now Joe I may not come back for
