Paul Goldschmidt Is 0-For-May — Can He Fix It?

other than that the Cardinal still lost yesterday so injury to insult or whatever you want to call it they started well I mean offensive Outburst to begin the game but uh miles Michaels again I I just had worries about the game that he would have last night and sure enough only four Innings pitched and uh the bullpen had to cover more Innings than than expected and the Cardinals didn't have enough fight in their offense to be able to answer what the Mets had and that's just been the story of the season they they can they can have outbursts of their own but whenever they get the punch back they don't know how to respond to yeah and I mean they they did do some things nice last night offensively started off after oi maral's comments Monday about needing to see more competitive at bats early in games they shuffled the lineup as we discussed yesterday and had Donovan nbar at the top it worked out really well those guys saw some pitches got on base uh Donovan hit the home run if I'm remembering correctly to lead things off so that was a jolt that you needed and contras then with a big hit like the the at bats they took to begin the game were really really good it was a complete about face from what we had been seeing they were basically when you'd get a pitch in the zone that you could Hammer they were doing that and they were taking the ones that that you didn't that you needed to be spitting on and it was really good to see later in the game you get a Homer from new bar and and Alec burles so that's good too but it it wasn't enough when you factor in just the atrocity that was the fifth inning for miles micheles and I don't know if he was tipping pitches that was the Scuttle butt from Keith Hernandez on the Mets broadcast evidently was suggesting that he was tipping his curveball by really slowing down his pitching motion and if they can notice that on a broadcast again I think Keith Hernandez always likes to say a guy is tipping and maybe is maybe isn't but certainly you can look at the performance of of what guys were doing Michael and they were hitting all his pitches so the the idea that they had a tell is not too farfetched and that's a tough loss because of it it's one game out of 162 but the emotional weight of losing contras and then not being able to show that resolve to win a game they were up right they were up when Wilson went down and to lose the way that they did that was a rough one for me Andy and it's the night that I actually did flip the script um if you'd have asked me yesterday on the Big Show hey do you think the Cardinals will make the playoffs I would have been reluctant but I would have said yeah I would have been you know wishy-washy you know maybe they turn this is a good team let's try to find a way to I no long like if you ask me today it's binary they're either going to make it or they're not and if I had to pick a side today my prediction would be no and it's the first time I think this year that I would say that and I know it's early but it's a i my expectation now is that I don't think they're going to quite pull it off because it's going to be a lot to overcome without contras well and again just yesterday we were talking about okay well what will it take for the Cardinals to finally then decide like okay this this season again is not our season and it's time to sell off and that decision is a long way away but you're trying to think of okay well what could the signs be would there be firings would there be this would there be that we don't really consider this angle of it because again I don't think any of us wanted anybody to get hurt but somebody like Wilson contrar getting hurt that is again you're not making the decision today that you're going to be sellers but it's the it's the event that maybe signals that that could be what you're closer to going forward yeah and it could go one of two ways after a big injury like that you can go in the tank because you're kind of already there and you just don't have the fortitude the resolve to get up off the mat after something like that happening to your team when you're already struggling as an offense or it can Galvanize you and if the Cardinals can take the bats that they took yesterday and have that be the way they approach these baseball games coming up and they can say look it it's not going to be anybody but us that's going to get us through this our guy Wilson has been a warrior for us this year and he's down now we got to pick him up so that when he gets back in July he's coming back to a team that's still got something to play for can the Cardinals rally around the idea that they're the guy who has been performing while they weren't has been helping to keep them afloat as much as they've been afloat he's out so now what do you do that can be a galvanizing factor for this team but it's going to take some it's going to take some intestinal fortitude from that group to make it so it's not just going to happen for them they're going to have to make it happen and last night they didn't right and I know that that's only one game so it's not fair to maybe judge and say that's a sign that they don't have it in them but you know really like to have seen a comeback last night and you know what they had chances and part of what makes me so pessimistic is Paul goldi might just be broken you know like theats we saw from him yeah in the in the latter Innings last night including the ninth where he took maybe the worst at fat that I've ever seen from Paul goldi he's swung a fastball like 10 inches off the plate right wasn't even close Andy he took two strikes on Fast balls one was just pretty much middle middle and then the next one was outside corner but well within the zone and then he did jump on a on an offs speed pitch that I think his eyes lit up because he can't catch up to a fast ball right now and he saw one that wasn't and he got so antsy I think that he pulled it foul uh he he he ripped it man but he couldn't straighten it out because he was just so jumpy to get to it that it would that it went well foul and then as you mentioned struck out on a pitch a foot and a half off the plate so that was a spot where he comes through Cardinals win that game my gosh are we having a different conversation we're saying look contras is down but look at what they were able to do without him maybe that's the wakeup call but we don't even have that we can't even have that conversation because the guy that in your heart of hearts you'd love to think could provide such a wakeup call was the chief contributor toward blown opportunities in last night's game Michaelis is one thing right that's a problem he's got a 64 ra that's a problem Paul goldi not being able to be a guy you can count on in those spots and in fact I had the thought I don't know if you would have thought the same way last night but I said well Mason wi didn't start this game maybe you pinch hit him here in the ninth inning I'm serious that win for Goldie and and and I had the thought and it felt like a crazy thought you know because this is still Paul goldi that we're talking about but then the it bat played out and suddenly I didn't feel so crazy anymore for having thought about it ahead of time you know I was thinking about it when he was walking up to the plate and then you just you you just want to will him to success like Goldie if ever there was a time but like can you find it right here because this team could really use one of its leaders coming through but it's not for a lack of trying he's just in a spot right now where it doesn't look right and hopefully that's a valley that there's a peak on the other side for him but he's also going to be 37 in September and you know it just father time gets everyone eventually so I hope that's not what it is for gold Schmid but my gosh Andy right now I'm grasping at straws trying to explain any other way to see why Goldie might come out of of this prolonged slump that he's in it's I have no logic for it whatsoever but it's something that it is the number one reason there's plenty of reasons it's the number one reason why the Cardinals are where they are but that was your thoughts 875 ktgr and now they're going to have to overcome the loss of uh the only hit that they really had that was doing anything of of real uh productive sense and now someone's got to fill that role multiple people do in order for you to have any kind of hope for this season the Royals have plenty of hope uh the Royals sure do Royals just beat the team that the Cardinals are about to face in four games uh they took the series today with six to four victory over the Brewers and uh guess what James MacArthur oh turns out he's just fine like he all right BW second straight save the other night and uh guess what came back in there and took care of business yeah someone else from attempting to blow a save I think he's I think he's a solid closer what the Royals have right now and um if he if he if that blown save hadn't happened just last night this would have been a sweep for the Royals yeah for me really we had this conversation yesterday about whether or not the Royals should be you know buyers or sellers all that it's still kind of too early to tell but games like last night are really what make me think this is why if you're the Royals you should be a little bit opportunistic around teams that are probably not going to do anything but they have some nice Talent especially like the bullpen they're some nice Bullpen guys but it does kind of feel like they've got some numbers that might come back to bite him in the ass and it kind of happened last night against the BRS and it almost happened again today so I wouldn't be surprised or I think I would encourage rather if the Kansas City Royals were a little bit more opportunistic especially at the trade deadline Market just to see if there is any sort of way they can fill like any kind of inefficiency they have either with the pitching rotation with the bullpen with the starting lineup I know there were some roals fans kicking the can around trying to get Tommy fam in the building uh to you know bolster that Outfield it's like that I do you want that I maybe I do that's the thing though it's like I'm telling you that you want that you do yeah yeah so that's why I'm like this Royals team in this front office should be looking at every single possible situation any single kind of scenario look at any single kind of inefficiency this team might have because I don't know how long this is going to last this team is kind of playing like they're running around with a handful of Roman candles you don't know if they're going to blow up in their hand or they're just going to blow up in somebody else's face that's actually really good analogy doesn't quit it just smash on piano keys and he hit the one that's Lac I'm not sure what to do with my hands like that's what this is that's what it feels like a little bit yeah you don't want to lose that right you don't want the wind to be taken out of your sales like that I me if we're being honest who on this Royal team right now especially the lineup has been on a team that's been in this position before not very many except for Salvador pz Sal Salvador but I mean other than that you've got a whole bunch of young rookies that have kind of come up in that system a little bit you do have some veterans there Frasier was was an addition this year Hunter Renfro but I mean not too many guys that have seen other organizations other than the Kansas City Royals and and then on the pitching side I mean Waka pitched in the playoffs right yeah but I mean other than remember TR maybe more yeah tra sure I sure do that was uh I can joke about that now it's almost like it's almost as though the bad Cardinal memories from when I was younger as a fan are how do I explain it like they're watered down now because when ishakawa happened it was like the worst moment of my life oh yeah and now and now I'm like I I cover the Cardinals yeah you know some stuff might have happened back in the day but it doesn't bother me you just toy with other Cardinal fans without that moment no it's actually kind of sick a little bit I'm a little bit sick in the head really am come on now
