Giants add Art Green and Ty Summers to Practice Squad. Joe Schoen believes in young roster

coming up the New York football Giants submitted one waiver claim and got that one waiver claim player they also signed a couple of practice squad guys we take a look at the roster who is now in the group of 16 that could be called up on Sundays and also how Joe Shane saw it all playing out where is our confidence level following the waiver claims and some impending free agencies to pursue as well we dive in coming up next [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] ah yes my friends it is ogp the one giant podcast where you know that we are your hosts over here Adam arre over there Andrew MTZ we're healthy we're wealthy we're wise we're talking about the state of the New York football Giants and what it means for them going forward as we will be turning our attention exclusively over to the regular season starting next week because after all the dust settles Andy that's what you do you move forward with the roster you have and we start to pay attention to it but there are some interesting notes coming out of this and we will also yes at some point discuss the new number change for one Mal leik neighbors Adam we're like a week out from football actually starting now the Giants aren't playing for a few more days after that but we're getting close and so all these different roster moves the final tweaks of you know Joe Shane putting his fingerprints on this 53 man roster like over the next day or so we're going to know what the team looks like going into that week one game against the Vikings 100% we're going to talk about again where the where the roster currently stands the claims they made if you're watching us live on YouTube or me flying solo for that covering okay you pick up you pick up a player obviously from the Green Bay Packers you feel like you've improved that room maybe from the standpoint of want to have better depth we know davarius Owens he was there he ends up being the corresponding cut off of the 53 we know that our favorite guy Alex Johnson he made it through to the practice squad as well okay but at a high level before we even talk about it and and the quotes from Joe Shane here I I find it fascinating because we've had this happen now a couple times this off season special teams value most of the media around the Giants was like Hey guys like boyin just veteran experienced the Giants really value these players a guy like Isaiah Hodgins who made it through the practice squad but it was hey they really love his big game usually shows up in the moments that matter most Allen Robinson all these players they didn't end up making the roster then you turn around and you also talk about the value of where you want to go and waiver claims there was a lot of reporting the Giants are going to put in one two three four five claims here now they did sign an additional two players to the practice squad so you know you can say it's up to three here potentially but I I just found it surprising because the general narrative was the back end of this roster needs a lot of improvement and at least for now we can get I think we get right into these Joe Shane quotes for now it looks like yeah that's how you that's how you perceived it but that's not how we were talking about it inside the building I mean it is strange I'm I can't I can't tell a lie Adam like I thought you look at Dan Dugen he's like my over under his four and a half claims that the Giants are goingon to have like he was you know I think art Stapleton and others said you know if you're one of the bottom 10 guys on the 53 man roster right now like rents don't buy an apartment because you may be out of here and then Joe Shane only puts one waiver claim in they're like oh how many did you strike out on obviously Carolina like put in a bunch he's like we put in one waiver claim and we got the one guy that was surprising to me like just overall and obviously we talked about the Joe Shane quotes and and you can hit on a couple of them but it surprised me because we have felt like the Giant's depth is not really there you've pointed out on Twitter and X before like no Giant player got claimed right not a single one that we were like should this guy make the roster oh can't expose him to waiver claims not a single player another team said we want that guy on our roster so it just shows that our depth isn't where it is so I just expected at least two or three claims to be successful for the Giants yeah and there's even some names that we'll talk about later on here on the back end of the episode that didn't get claimed by anybody so on the one hand you could say well it wasn't like there was a value there to go grab will they end up maybe being assigning for the Giants or is it that there really is some confidence around this team this organization specifically maybe around players that we didn't get a chance to see because of injury Where Do We Stand uh when we talk about a player like Cordell flat absence normally makes the heart gr fonder but it feels like absence has made us forget we don't know we haven't seen him playing out there so maybe all of a sudden week one it looks consistent enough that was say okay that's where the confidence was and they were navigating this but with all the conversation obviously around the Giants and around the secondary depth it felt like something was coming and oh by the way they also cut you know Trey Hearn who was in Camp and a veteran right like they made moves that felt like they were clearing out the room a little bit potentially to bring in some new players when we talk about Joe Shane in the way that he spoke about it he had a somewhat blunt response as you said we put in one claim and they got it um but why did the Giants not claim more players uh was the question asked following the waiver claim period sometimes it's fantasy football people aren't cutting good football players good football players aren't going to get out there you're not going to put in 15 claims across the league that are going to change your roster he went on to say a lot of times it's depth players that come in and again get you through the season or a depth safety if an injury occurs and they have to go start you're looking for those guys I the answer on it on its face is good like we never suggested that the Giants were going out and signing claiming starters when it came to cuts across the league the suggestion was here are the areas across the roster that need depth Improvement and you can go find some of the those guys on waiver claims we also saw as I mentioned yesterday on the live we saw teams that executed a handful of Trades before it came to the claim period you had a former captain of the Rams get traded prior to claims probably because you didn't want to risk him having to go through it before you could get your hands on him okay so there are those things that happen I don't want this isn't like an overreaction negatively hey if you have confidence in the roster you've constructed I can appreciate that but I stopped short of no one was telling you to go out and claim starters or no one was expecting that any reasonable fan but saying you need some depth or you just want to make sure you have some competition going towards the regular season that I think is worth having a discussion point I'll ask you do you think that this is and we're going to do a deeper dive on where the roster stands right now but do you think that that decision-making process is also predicated on a lot of this roster now are quote unquote our guys that we drafted that we've been developing and we are banking on our guys that we scouted and believed in coming through for us this year well so Shane Joe Shane talked a little bit about why he only put one claim in and he said people aren't cutting good football players and then he kind of spoke on the other side of his mouth and he said maybe some and this is a direct quote from Joe Joe Shane maybe some vets that get cut I've got experience with that again Nick McLoud is still here he's a valuable role player for us Jason pinnick is now starting for us Tyreek Phillips started games for US history says you can find some good football players during this time it's kind I'm like kind of not understanding what he's saying where he's like you're not going to put all these claims in but you can definitely still get good football players it's like well it feels like the two things that he's saying are in conflict with each other and I can't really rationalize it the players and again whatever but the players that are getting claimed aren't good aren't anything more than depth players on your roster that's that's point one his second point is though but when teams claim those only depth players to put on their practice squad or maybe the roster then other players will get cut and those players are the play that'll be better now now to be fair he has claimed guys that have worked out for the Giants so I do understand where he's coming from of hey you don't want to jump in and claim guys just because right rush out to go get a player X Y or Z you put a claim in for him and now you have to make a decision about guys that you want to have on your 53 or practice squad spots that part I appreciate but part of me would say so so take your process the step further and identify the same thing you're doing once guys get cut and you find the these valuable players Nick MCL is a great example go do that sooner do there has to be you know two or three players within the waiver claim period that you could project in the same way whether or not that works out whether or not you're only talking about guys you're going to put on your practice squad and reshuffle what that order looks like we'll talk about that in a second that's fine so I think there's just something you know there's a little bit of apprehension right now I think in the fan base and with you and I around what we're seeing what the messaging has been and and where this team truly is and there's been a little bit of sentiment that Joe Shane at times has looked like he's been that half a step slow on on where he should be in terms of some of the decisions but again proof in the pudding we like you know let's get to Sunday football I don't want to be over you know I don't want to overstate it here on August 29th and I do agree with Joe Shane that like it's very rare that a time like this a Bonafide starter at a reasonable price in your salary cap range is available for you to pick up so like I understand the sentiment that he that he had there but we still feel like if certain players didn't make the roster sign him to the practice squad like there were guys out there that could improve this team especially in the cornerback room now we we've talked about the singular claim I know you put the episode out there yesterday about the singular claim that the Giants put in for Anthony Johnson but it did feel like there were other players where you were interested in in whether or not they could be part of this roster and they may even still be free agents right now that's right so coming up here in a second let's talk about not only the practice squad and where it currently stands with a couple of new additions then let's also turn over to players that were available and can still be available and one name that was claimed which I had highlighted as being a potential Target for big blue on the waiver wire we'll dive into that as we continue coming up next okay so as we turn things over here for the New York football Giants quickly just on where the practice squad currently stands for them I mentioned they did make one other addition now two other additional moves excuse me arc green it was reported this morning that he was also brought into the practice squad then you have currently standing a practice squad that has familiar names like Isaiah hodgin miles boyin Lawrence kager ends up getting through there yakob Johnson Joshua miles on the offensive line along with marcelus Johnson you also have uh KJ Cloyd who we were a fan of Timone Fox maybe showed enough in that last game to want to be a guy you wanted in on your practice squad Andy's favorite Dante Miller he makes it through Casey Rogers Lane little surprise there my favorite Alex Johnson Jim morrisy or Jimmy morrisy as it's written here I don't know why that's getting doors references in my mind uh also the kicker June McCarney and then also Ty Summers that's the first one of the first new guys was Ty Summers uh linebacker he got brought to the practice squad and then you also get Arc Green in the secondary as well that was the practice squad most guys that I think we anticipated being there in in terms of it nothing really surprising there maybe like I said outside of Raheem Lane I just thought was an interesting one though I don't know they didn't have a corresponding cut to add green they were only at 15 so I got him to 16 yeah it's an interesting list um I'm pleased to see certain players on it obviously there was a lot of talk about you can't let Isaiah Hodgins go he's a valuable member another team's going to pick him up or you know a lot of times these players that don't make the roster feel slighted they're like well you didn't believe in me now I'll go somewhere else where I get a brand new you know perspective look at a guy like Alan Robinson who got cut by the giants has already signed uh either to the practice squad or the roster with the Detroit Lions knowing that there is plenty of targets behind Alan rossin Brown for the lions that seemed like a really good move for Allen Robinson and now listen that's a practice squad so it's not like it's not like they we'll see if he gets elevated I would be I would suspect that he might because he had a very good camp and showed that he's still capable of being a contributor 30 years old veteran that this would be a good example of and we don't know but a good example of hey we're going to maybe think about cutting Allen Robinson I don't suspect that there was any deal to be made with the Detroit Lions right even if it was just saying you know our early uh sixth rounder you know sorry your late sixth rounder for our early seventh rounder you know a five to 10 margin move maybe when it comes to draft Capital pick I wonder about things like that this isn't a judgment or anything on Joe Shane but things like that when you see him get picked up by a deep team that does have some need at the wide receiver room I wonder now I'll also take the step back and say we may come to pass that Allen Robinson doesn't see the field for the for the NFL level team or doesn't see more than five Targets this entire season or gets cut over the next you know 10 days when another player needs to happen here so there is also that relativity to some of where these players land and what they're looking for they're saying hey come in take a flyer see how you fit maybe it doesn't work out teams are still doing a bit of that as well can we plug a hole sometimes you still to get a guy in the building know for sure but this is a player that they saw firsthand when the Giants met them in week one of the preseason it was something that I had mentioned a few times like these joint practices and these things that happen obviously they saw enough from Allen Robinson to say we want you to be here and Adam when when you're dealing with vested veterans and the practice squad or the 53 I don't really put too much stock into like which one they're they're on because they're not susceptible to waivers they can sign with whoever they want so there may be an agreement between the Lions it's like hey you're on the practice squad for now if you can pick up the play this as soon as you pick up the Playbook you're active on our week our week one or week two roster but keeping you on the practice squad allows us flexibility to be able to make other transactions and not just have you eating away a roster spot like it's sometimes these vested veterans have mutual agreements that they'll eventually be called up whereas other teams like you know you look at a guy that's not a vested veteran he gets released he could he could get claimed by someone he could be signed to another roster it's just a little bit different for for older veteran guys like that and certainly just there's a footnote here too on the Tai Summers claim the linebacker he's played with Green Bay played with Jacksonville played with the Saints most notably when you look at his snap counts this is a guy that has played at least 73% or more of special teams snaps when it comes to um you know game days on Sundays has not played hardly you know any real defensive snaps he hasn't played a defensive snap since 2021 where he played 3% or 29 year prior with Green Bay in 2020 126 or 177% so this is a special teams depth player so don't anticipate that this was the move that helped cement or solidify the linebacker room in some way if you need to call him up but it's still it is still a nice value to have when you talk about a player like Adams going on the designated to return so he's going to miss the first four weeks then you have a 21-day window maybe you'll need this body to call up so that be the footnote for me when we look at a player like that art green wise I don't know if you have any particular opinion on on what the Giants are getting when they bring in a player like that and whether or not we think we'll see him um he did play in what 11 games in 2022 had 49 tackles eight pass breakups uh three tackles for a loss two interceptions there are some things here that you can like about him obviously he's still just 24 like a little over 24 years old 61 200 pounder like there there's something here that's worth taking a look at if you're the Giants who can forget the legendary AR green playing it for the Hutchinson blue dragons in Adam obviously when you go deep into the scouting bag you go back to his film from 2018 with the Hutson Hutchinson blue dragons and Adam my question for you is where is Hutchinson on a map do you think you have any idea where that is Hutchinson uh Minnesota because that's where uh the tight end plays which has a very similar sounding last name uh it's obviously Kansas obviously it's it's it was always Kansas I mean I I can't believe that you didn't really dip into your bag of tricks and figure out that art green played at Hutchinson you know you know what I should have done is that like all of these cuz he played these are things you know with Houston he played these weren't NFL stats all of those teams in the UFL usfl all they're always in the lower belt it's always Southern areas you know states that have some of these other teams but shame on me yeah no no opinion here obviously we got to dig in a little bit more it's I mean let let's be honest it's much much more difficult for us to even have a sense of a guy that was a fringe practice squad player for somewhere else that wasn't having huge accolades or didn't get much playing time he relatively new to to the system so I'm it makes me think I'm curious like who was the person that stood up in The Scouting room for the Giants and was like I have watched this film this is something that we can work with like I'm I'm interested to see what the Giants end up doing is it just a body or is it something more than that for the Giants here's what I'll give you and this is not I'm not telling you this is my opinion on it this is his draft profile coming out care of nfl.com he was a draft projected seventh rounder a 564 grade candidate for bottom of the roster or practice squad one thing you can tell you is that he had a blazing 436 40 yard dash at his pro day so for a guy that is 61 you're talking about playing at the cornerback position quality size and strength plays as a pressed Corner smooth feet displays burst and quickness and able to constrict catch space with his frame and active hands he does allow separation opportunities at the breakpoint he doesn't utilize the athletic gifts enough and he's too uh complacent in getting where he needs to be so it's also a poor run Defender but I never really care about mentioning that when it comes to cover quarterbacks as being like hey great if you can do it you can do it cover the guy downfield maybe what we see in that right up there is a guy that whose potential is not being maximized okay you know what I mean like let's get you in the room looks like you have all the natural skill sets how do we get you to grind it out on practice days and maybe see some quality so all right worth taking a flyer on can't say any less or more than that when it comes to a player like Arc green or when it comes to an experienced veteran special teamer like Ty Summers come up here though let's talk about available free agents there was one in Lewis scene who was available maybe he'll be close and we can still get eyes on them even if not for the New York football Giants other names that certainly they should keep a look at here as we wrap up today's ogp all right Andy we're not overreacting the the waiver claim singular was the waiver claim the other two additions to the practice squad it is what it is now we talk about where do we stand from a free agency standpoint and players that maybe the Giants could just outright sign which by the way is a factor in all of this as well depending on what a player was drafted in the contract that he signed to you don't want to put in a waiver claim and have to pay that guy whatever the money may be if you let him get all the way through now you're just negotiating one to one a player that I had mentioned as far as quarterbacks go I know you mentioned uh fairly with the Tennessee Titans because of familiarity with the system I mentioned a player like lsen because hey the pedigree is there okay it hasn't worked out there's been injuries but worth taking a flyer no one claimed him and now he ends up signing he'll be playing in New Jersey potentially on Sundays but for the New York Jets the Jets end up getting him on the practice squad and they actually cut a cornerback in their room initially so interesting that they still go and get him um we still do have though Farley is out there fairly excuse me um and then CJ Henderson who I'd mentioned as well he's still available too so there are options if the Giants want to add an additional player into that secondary yeah I couldn't agree more there's obviously a few names out there I'm curious to see if the Giants are are saying you know we didn't like them at their price tag which was whatever it was previously obviously with Cale uh Fairley he was on a firstr draft pick uh rookie deal but it was 2.7 or 2.8 million if you're talking about like a fringe guy are you really G to spend that much money on someone like that right but at the veteran minimum or or whatever the minimum is you can sign him is it worth it to bring that type of type of person in I think the giant should obviously explore that so for me it's still a name that that comes to mind as as one that the giant should be looking at for short now um in terms of other guys I I think Henderson for me is the player that I would look at out of the two a little bit more of a background a little bit more of a track record certainly and then the other player which you mentioned here before we started was Desmond King now this is also going on the veteran side over 29 he'll be 30 years old in this upcoming season my my question mark and concern specifically when it comes to secondary players is that age fall off yesterday when we were doing the live some people threw up oh should they reach back out to ad dor Jackson should you think about veteran X someone mentioned Howard who's a free agent right now between one price point which we've mentioned before but then also it's like cornerbacks fall off when that speed leaves you it can leave you in a hurry and that really does just it changes the dynamic of it especially in today's NFL so sometimes these veteran players I have a hard time getting excited about bringing in uh but I don't I don't know there there's equal and maybe more value than looking at players that I talk about like Louis seen who has very limited sample hasn't looked so good but I'm like ah he's still young so maybe there's something there do you think a guy like Desmond King is worth the look I I I can't believe that the Giants aren't trying to bring him in and sign him immediately to the roster Adam you know I I I saw him get released and I was surprised because Desmond King is a name that I know and I'm like how do I know this name for so long and it's like well he is 29 years old he was an all pro player before in 2018 and and I think 2019 he was a pro bow player so he has the accolades to be able to do six years ago but yeah yeah similar to adori Jackson and like yeah that was a few years ago the difference is adori Jackson's Pro Football Focus rating and coverage ratings were terrible last year he was a 43 people can argue that uh you know wink put him in the slot he was against quicker Corners he's better on the outside being more physical sure that's fine Desmond King has had backtack 70 plus Pro Football Focus ratings in 2023 and 2022 so the difference between Ador Jackson and Desmond King is one one player's performance fell off a cliff the other one has still been relatively consistent as a contributor and so on top of that Adam we know gunar oesi who we both felt was going to make the roster if healthy over Isaiah McKenzie which it seems like he is trying to make it to week one but Desmond King also has punt return capabilities like he is one of those guys if Joe Shane's talking about special teams value here and there he's a guy that fills the cornerback role for you immediately has a veteran presence and also can fill in in a pinch in pun returns and it's not like you're throwing Eric gray out there who's never seen a ball 40 yards above his head so for me like this checks all the boxes I'm gonna be fascinated to find out where Desmond King signs and how much he signs for is it more about getting the last paycheck or is it more about which team gives me the best opportunity to get a ton of snaps because if it's the if it's the ladder the Giants are a perfect fit for Desmond King yeah it's a good point you bring up and we talk about that that return value as well something that I had mentioned um yesterday too just about with the new kickoff rules it does feel like there's an opportunity to actually have that be a strength again right in years past now we know it's blasted them out of the end zone and then listen the Giants weren't even doing the barebones minimum of having guys that could catch the ball and fair catch the ball and hold on to it they were trying to subject rookie running backs to get back there and make it happen with zero experience prior like so you need to have a guy no matter what but there actually is an opportunity to make some hay there so I I do find that one interesting and certainly you talk about by whatever metrics you can King has still been a contributor and I think that's it's a good distinction to make relative to other veterans same age range yeah but have they been doing it recently like it it does matter if you've still been playing and playing consistently anybody else before go ahead well the only thing I was going to say too is again this is not solving our quarterback number two problem right like he got released by the Texans he's not he's not the guy that cures everything he's not a big Marquee free agent like a Stefon Gilmore where you're like I'm paying him to be XYZ it's a guy that I think can contribute in that room especially with all the question marks around can Cordell Cordell flop play on the outside what does Nick McLoud you know if he ends up getting a huge ton of snaps what does that look like I think you can you can accurately say Desmond King can be put in the mix and at least potentially be one of those players that could get some playing time and I think if you brought in someone like that and Cordell flat won the job and earned that job on Sundays then it actually it' be a nice confirmation right great great great great like Cordell flat is at least looking like he's going in the right direction all of this to say this isn't negative it really isn't it's just I think sometimes premise versus what you end up seeing happen you have to recalibrate yourself so if the Giants are sitting here right now at least on August 29th saying we mostly believe in the depth that we have and there is some youth there there is some familiarity with the system okay then let's go ahead and trust that and see what happens going forward but there still is time here for some changes to get made for big blue last thing that we will talk about Andy right now go ahead take Take the Wheel M Mel boy came so close to having a clean show but then you blow it right at the end um when we talk about Malik neighbors he were waiting to hear everyone's waiting to hear with baited breath what his new number was going to be in the end the first ever NFL retired number is now unretired from a league neighbors to be number one in your playbook and number one in your heart Malik neighbors will now wear jersey number one obviously some people care about the jersey numbers or which Jersey people are wearing or what color what what is the you know Road uniform going to look like for this game so for those people we're gonna have a a two-minute little thing Malik neighbors is wearing number one you can now go by his jersey obviously that was that's a challenge like if you're someone that's like hey I had a saquan Barkley jersey I need to find a new giant that that I can get a Jersey for Malik neighbors seems to be someone that is going to be a really good and B is going to be at least around for a few more years and so now you have confirmation he is going to be number one and Adam who can forget who had the jersey that was retired at number one I mean course obviously just right off the tip of your tongue you know it was Ray flar right yeah you knew that you know no questions asked and you're like oh he definitely was a contributor in my lifetime when he uh won the championship in 19 34 in 1932 he led the NFL in receptions receiving yards and receiving touchdowns is in the is in the Hall of Fame it's just one of those guys that obviously you know Malik neighbors had to go ask for permission it is it is really funny but the Giants you know I all joking as said the Giants are running into a problem where like single digigit jersey numbers they've retired like almost all of them and like when you when you restrict players at certain positions to have to wear numbers in certain ranges like what are the Giants supposed to do like there's only like two or three numbers that these guys can wear I know it's a silly thing but like this was eventually going to happen because you can't just retire all single digit numbers and not let the giant players play it I just don't know why not play like he could have played in 46 he could have played in 73 he could have played in 90 you know 99 there were so many options out there to have to go and disrespect the memory of Ray flare just seems upsetting by the way man when you talk about 21 catches 3 50 yards and five touchdowns leading the league that is what we talk about a game changer in the 1932 era listen you know the historic context of the value of players like that in the early days of the New York football franchise like there's a difference as to why these numbers get retired but we will give you this because I'm nothing if not thorough when it comes to topics that I really could not care any less about thank you to the flarity family for allowing me to wear number one for the New York Giants neighbor said in a statement released by the team I understand the responsibility and I will do everything in my power to honor the fa flarity family and this organization I will wear the number with great pride can't wait for the season to start I use that just to say that for whatever it was in the combine and leading up to it and we talked about romad dun and personalities and Leadership and all these things Malik neighbors has done absolutely nothing but everything you want him to do coming in the door has looked electric on the field seems to be understand exactly what his role and responsibilities are like he has been now the model version of a draft pick that you want coming in the door and we already understand kind of the hype train that is building behind him when we talk about early Le coming out of the draft when they first drafted him I already put my stamp on it yes he's going to be a thousand plus yard receiver yes he's going to see massive volume in terms of targets I'm pretty bullish on where he could stand in having one of the all-time great rookie wide receiver years coming up here assuming all the pieces come together on offense I mean man at the end of the day chat gbt killed it from Malik Neighbors on that thank you that he wrote like come on now I mean if you're like I'm the guy care about it you're the guy making jokes how dare you please write me a three sentence of how appreciative I am that someone is UN retiring my number and like just end scene listen these are the types of things that are happening we're going to be focusing on games and predictions and we're going to move past all this different roster stuff of who's going to be on the practice Squad and who's not in short order because we are basically what 10 days out from actual football being played for the Giants and we're only seven days out from actually actual football being played around the NFL at the end of the day Andy tomorrow will be the last look back before we exclusively start looking forward tomorrow we want to take a look at where Joe Shane has come heading into year number three he's had three off Seasons he's had three draft classes let's take a look at the successes that he's had and the players that can certainly take it from being pretty good to maybe being a great three off season Reclamation of the New York football Giants there are questions to be asked about him here and we certainly are going to have a Keen Eye on how this team performs how Brian dull coaches and where we think this franchise is headed in year three of the deow Shane ticket that'll be tomorrow because come Monday Minnesota Vikings week one winning football games is going to be the sole Focus for OG p and for every giant fan
