Malik Nabers quality debut and the few Offensive positives for the Giants

coming up we look back at the rookie debut of Malik Neighbors on Sunday and project some of the positives of his young career going forward plus notable performances across the offensive line injury updates to key players that affect how the roster will look going forward this season not to mention the tight end room what did the snap count tell us coming out of week one we dive into it all coming up next [Applause] [Music] ah yes my friends it's ogp the one giant podcast where you know that I am one of your hosts Adam arre Andrew MTZ joining us back tomorrow on Wednesday we'll continue to dive into the defensive side of the football go over those snap counts and key responses that we got from Brian D in terms of who played why when when where what and how and what it'll look like going forward in the weeks ahead this season so some interesting notes on that side of it but for today one of the things we didn't do in our Monday session which was about venting and Daniel Jones and maybe Brian dable and maybe Joe Shane and just I think what the fan base collectively needed to get off their chest we take a pause and now come back to Malik neighbors our rookie wide receiver sixth overall pick who had a very nice debut performance for himself when we look back at the game on Sunday and the areas that he really stood out and had success and I think it's that contrast when you look at the other receivers on this team maybe a hopeful like Jaylen hayatt who we want to see develop this is what pedigree and number one Talent looks like and we knew that when you drafted him in this past draft and what it was going to mean to see him on the fiet so on Sunday obviously we saw Malik Neighbors come out okay on Sunday we saw the near football Giants struggle mightily to get themselves going offensively we know that Daniel Jones was a key culprit of that we're going to talk about a bit of the offensive line here as well but we also saw Malik neighbor show you all of the things you expect from your number one wide out five receptions on seven targets 66 yards average over 13 yards per catch and a long of 25 which was a nice little kind of soft in-cut route down the left sideline that Daniel Jones threw a high pass up over the top I don't mean that negatively not that we need to find ways to give Daniel Jones some crumbs of Praise here he High pointed the ball to put it in a position where a number one wide receiver is going to go up make that body adjustment and come down with that catch but in totality what we also saw was his first Catch of the Day was finding the soft pocket in the zone settling down making himself available for Jones converting that we also later saw him in the game I think his last catch was a quick slant route that showed the ability to obviously get off the line put a move and get that inside leverage on the defender and go ahead and secure that pass as well now there's also a uh swing pass out of the back field for him or effectively setting up a bit of a bubble stream there on the left side I think early in the game as well I like the idea that Brian da and the Giants offense want to get the ball into the into the hands of their playmaker and want to see Malik neighbors have an opportunity to make some guys miss make some action happen what I will say is an interesting thing to watch going forward now is because we know defenses are going to be key on on Malik Neighbors anyway you go back and look at some of these catches where usually there's a man in coverage and there's also a a a secondary player not too far off from it so the extra attention is going to be paid there it's an interesting balance because in a game like this on Sunday the Giants are losing early the thing is basically Out Of Reach and you don't feel like there's any risk of them coming back on you so you don't have to necessarily as aggressively watch Malik neighbors throughout this game or watch any of the key factors that you're going to want to mitigate that being said how the Giants approach and how Brian D approach getting Touches for Malik neighbors is going to be interesting because those those behind the line of scrimmage passes I I I don't love them mostly because on the outside how are you setting up your blocking schemes there we just saw by the way last night on Monday Night Football a very interesting uh uh set of sequences where when you watch some of those absolutely explosive run plays for the 49ers it's not like they're doing anything Dynamic when it comes to their blocking schemes they're just hat on a hat pulling guards getting tight ends getting wide receivers to come down in on the blocks as well and really setting up kind of their their run schemes in those plays systematically against what we think is a very talented likely will be a talented Jets defense and I think that that's a little bit of the problem here Vikings aren't going to be one of the best defenses in the league you're going to face some really good defenses along the way when you look at those plays I just I don't like the risk reward on some of those now it doesn't mean that I don't want to try to make sure that you can to have success in those instances but I just look at Malik neighbors and I say from what I'm seeing already on those catches that he had on the Reps that he got on Sunday I like chances of putting him out in traditional sets here at least early in the season let him go beat his man on one-on-one try to create scheme opportunities for him to get to the top of his routes to High Point passes on his back shoulder and to make big plays for you again I I don't mind end rounds and some of the things that you're going to do but until you establish as we'll talk a little bit about the offensive line today as well until you establish that everybody is playing to you know to their ratings to their grades to to your expectations I just think you want to mitigate putting some of those situations in place where Daniel Jones can make mistakes as long as he's the quarterback under Center where some of your blocking can fail you on the outside we saw as we mentioned in in our initial reaction podcast that on the pick six play which was a mess and a disaster but if you looked in behind that pick and behind the interception you would have seen wand Del Robinson I believe it was on the outside waiting or could have been single ter I'm not sure if it was single T out of the backfield or W Del Robinson on a bubble screen there was a linebacker that was absolutely going to demolish the receiver on that play So it's not just that there was a horrific play there you have to look in behind it and say are we capable of right now schematically and personnel-wise of setting up those plays for success and that's where a little bit you go back to D and you say hey things we want to do things how we want to be dynamic offensively great but you need to make sure that these guys are checking those boxes on the Monday through Thursday and Friday and getting into the into the game prep that tell you hey we can go out and execute this on Sundays and hopefully be more often than not successful end of the day it was a great debut for Malik neighbors you show you showcase that he has all of the route tree combinations that he has the one-on-one beat ability that he has the football IQ to read what the defense is doing at a secondary level and find those spaces to make himself available listen I know the comments are going to be yeah well if Daniel Jones throwing the football who cares the positives are the positives good performances are good performances whether or not the Giants win or lose lose these games you're still going to go inside and try to look and highlight the things that went well for them and that being the case when we come back around here we're going to go ahead and take a look at that offensive line a little more specifically we're also going to get into the tight end room snap counts that were very interesting coming out of this game and what that means trying to stay positive on a Tuesday but there are some some potentially negative slanting angles that we're going to take both on the offensive line and then going back into the tight end room as well we'll continue our Tuesday edition of ogp coming up here in just one moment okay so the other part of this too then coming out of Sunday is taking a look at some of those PFF grades and some of those performances now Andrew Thomas is our stud he plays 70 snaps in total those are all the Reps that you want to see really just encouraging that you had five offensive linemen and they all played all of their reps right that's not something that we've always been able to say about the Giants in the past whether through injury or because lack of having confidence in your current depth chart you end up being willing to rotate players in and swap positions Etc so 76.6 overall for Andrew Thomas an Elite 91.4 pass 55.3 run block listen there's always going to be those plays and there's assignments and there's passing off blocks Etc but we're not even going to really bother getting too deep into Andrew Thomas today because that's the expectation really positive for me I think is when you go to a player like Germaine lumor and he also had all 70 reps came out clean 52 pass 18 run blocks won't say that again because that's the ratio of what they ran on the offensive side of the ball but I like the fact that 73.3 in pass block and also a 63 in run block 645 649 Excuse Me overall that matters because you're you're offering a level of consistency here is 63 as as high as you wanted to be listen the Run game struggled overall so you know that number is going to be lower coming out but I like that after an offseason where you started with maybe a different agenda and then ultimately because of organizational failings around Evan Neil in the right tackle position you end up pivoting and putting alumino out there it was always an option you had on the table I don't think it was the first plan he held himself pretty pretty darn well in this one and you have to like that coming out now we're going to get into the tight end room here as well but I do have to say when you go further down this list there's two things that stand out to you the first one is veteran Greg van Roden right so he also plays at Right Guard all the snaps in this game 44.1 in pass block a 55.4 four in the Run game so I can get a little bit optimistic about that run game and again do these things relate back to Daniel Jones and down in distance and being effective on the plays when you have opportunity to be successful of course like that's of course a part of this and overall I'm happy with what I saw from the line I'm encouraged it can improve over the course of this season but Greg van Ren not your first choice in terms of players you were going to bring in obviously an older veteran I I have my concerns that the grand scheme of things we're going to look at Right Guard and say hey age right maybe more of a of a nice veteran depth player than being a starter right now let's see how he progresses going forward over the course of the season the other one plays right alongside of him and that's John Michael schmidtz now 52.2 overall 471 pass 52.2 in the Run block grade now again had some minor injuries over the course of the off season so how much of those reps are there continuity wise we'll talk about John ran Jr here in a second I'm willing to also give a little bit on on where we think these players are going to be two and three weeks down the road versus where they were in week one with everything that did not go well for them and then also by the way when you get down early in games and you start to go so much more into the pass scheme for the offense well you start to lose balance and you also start to communicate to the defense that we're going to be trying to throw the ball to get back into this one and that makes it easier right so these grades are impacted by that not just the volume of reps you get in one phase or the other the offensive side of the ball but also the fact that the defense knows what you need to do it makes your job harder across the board I mentioned John runan Jr he goes with a 59 offensive 59.7 Pass 57.3 Run This falls into the category of again Andrew Thomas has said it and forget it runan uh sorry uh van Ren and John Michael schmidtz they're in the hey let's get back out there again this week and let's show me something against Washington just to make me feel like we're all going in the right direction stability from the veteran and then progress from the year two Center when it comes to John runan because he didn't play hardly at all in the course of the off season I'm encouraged by this he was dealing with the shoulder injury so him and alumor to me are the standouts and guess what those were the two key free agent additions that you wanted to bring into this team so I like the fact that both of them gave you sample sizes that tell you consistency and the going forward we think we can build on that especially if you believe that John Michael schmidtz is again year two to getting familiarity didn't get a lot of reps in Camp with John runan Jr on his left side so there's there's going to be a little bit of growing pains in the interior overall pretty encouraged right I got three out of three out of five feeling good about two out of five just want to get to next week and want to see positive sample sizes going in the right direction and that comes back to having a balanced offense and feeling good about what we're seeing there so that that's the upside of this now inside of if we're just talking about purely from a blocking standpoint before we get into the tight end room one other note that I'll make here when we go inside some of these grades and a little bit the eye test that that informs it as well Eric so I'll go running back here Eric gray and Tyrone Tracy Jr we made mention of this that Tyrone Tracy Jr out snapped Eric gray now again we have to go back to the fact that if we think about gray as being behind what was a bcow back in in Deon single ter he had 50 of the 70 offensive reps 28 uh pass nine run blocking a pass blocking excuse me 10 run and three run blocking now his overall grade in pass blocking was excellent a 74.5 he had a good run grade had a decent run blocking grade that's relatively you inconsequential overall the passing grade was only a 51.1 that's not his bread and butter so you'd like to see him have to do less of that even though I think he's capable of it you go to a player like Eric gray here's the hard part 67.1 is fine the I mean it's good the pass grade is good the Run grade is good it's only seven reps and that's because he's a north and south Runner and you like to primarily use him in spelling Devon single ter in that way but you get behind early and you have to kind of adjust your game script now I still believe because Tyrone Tracy Jr was listed above Eric gray on the depth chart coming into this one that that's how the Giants want their hierarchy to be they want the more Dynamic two-phase player back there in the converted wide receiver he only plays 14 reps the grade is not good the passing grade is actually particularly bad at 31.1 he came out with a 58 .7 run grade um and did not have any pass blocking reps at all so there's a bit of this Yin and this Yang here when it comes to that pass blocking Grade Nothing for air gray here either because you're not in there often enough to really start to get that sample size but this is why we believe that single is going to get the Lion Share because he's relied on in All Phases here specifically running obviously but pass blocking as well being smart with it I'm curious to see how that grows going forward because when we look at those numbers I can paint a very easy picture where if the Giants play a more back b game offensively if Daniel Jones plays a decent game offensively in week two well then you're going to see as we talk about 20 snaps available that dein single D didn't play in this game and maybe it wains a little bit in the latter stages because you know the game is effectively over much sooner than the final whistle but if you tell me you have 15 to 20 reps can I see it flipping and Eric gray getting a little more or can I see it more of a 50-50 behind uh Devin Singletary yes I can so there's it's interesting to see here just indications that we get coming out of this overall and wanting to take a look at it now the other thing that we can talk about as we mentioned a big conversation about Daniel Jones I think we talked about this in the episode uh at in the postgame but doubling down that there was 4.4 yards of separation for the wide receivers they were available but there were short Hops and misses along the way and then also Daniel Jones had the 12th most time in terms of dropback uh in the pocket so the opportunity was there as well these aren't things that we need to unearth and discover we knew this coming in it was the reality of what that game day showed us struggling Daniel Jones and I thought that um there was a really good analyst that mentioned that they saw similar actually I think it was Tiki Barber as a matter of fact Tiki Barber happened to mention that Daniel Jones he's like I saw Daniel Jones make mistakes that I saw Caleb Williams make that I saw Bo Knicks make yeah that's a problematic right year six quarterback versus rookie quarterbacks so living on the Spectrum we know it was a bad performance here's the other part of it too and what really separates I mean even beyond anything that we want to talk about in terms of you know successes or failures for Daniel Jones when we think about keep so pressure-wise right clean Under Pressure blitzed not blitzed when it was clean Daniel Jones was giving you an offense of 68.5 a pass grade of 67.2 the Run grade was 62.9 so the over overall offense and came out positively in that right so great now here's what's interesting about it I will say drop passes there were four so this is that little thing of even in those rare moments and by and large I think there's some drop passes that you look at and say not all drop passes are created equal but four drop passes in those instance that's pretty difficult if you are watching a a a quarterback like Daniel Jones already struggleing his own right and then you don't even get the little crumb of success that maybe moves the needle for you under pressure it's a mess the passing goes down to a 45.4 grade not being blitzed 56.9 so that's not even about being kept clean that's also pressure getting there without having to bring the blitz versus Blitz where the offense actually performed actually a little bit better in the past 59.5 the struggle area was when that pressure got brought it also sucked down the Run game they were to plug a lot of those holes up and really shut down the two one of the two phases of the offensive attack so just some things to consider overall it speaks back to not only Daniel Jones it speaks to the offense overall that rhythm that flow and like I said a 45.4 when it comes to being under pressure that's an absolute you know mess for the Giants because the reading react of your quarterback is not putting you in successful situation so that is what it is I don't want to belabor that point by any stretch of the imagination just want to make sure we have that footnote last thing I'll say before we get into injury updates talking about what came out of this game there were a handful of them it's unfortunate and it's going to lead to some changes for the Giants between between now when we get to next Sunday's matchup inside the tight end room was interesting as well which I'll actually save here just for a moment I want a spotlight said about Malik Neighbors at the top five of seven 66 yards the other notable here is going to be 12 targets for Wale Robinson he catches only 50% of them now he's normally been what we likeed so much about him a year ago is a high catch percentage only converts into 44 yards now again you get locked into one phase you're behind in the game you end up in these situations where it's very easy to read and react and shut down some of these underneath passes um that is the only really other big bright spot Darius Slayton three out of four for 26 yards everything kept in front of you no deep shots here Theo Johnson we to talk about him only one catch and down the line you go while Devon Singletary caught four passes remember that early first drive one which lost them seven yards he only put it together for 15 yards so there's not a lot to speak of here when we talk about where success came in the past game though notable that Devin single ter it's such a one with all the loss yardage he had 32 yards after the catch even though he only had 15 yards that's the way it goes when you're the New York football Giants and then you had 22 yards after the catch from the league neighbors so some good opportunities there for him as well coming back on the other side let's give the injury update around key players darus Slayton is among them Carter Coughlin is a part of that group as well and what the conversation is going forward here this week and then we will of course also take a look at the early line for the Giants as they prepare to go on the road in week number two and take on the division rival excuse me Washington commanders back in just one moment all right first let's go ahead and take a look at a couple of the injes that came out now we're going to talk about tomorrow Brian dable because it mostly focused on the defensive side of the ball and decision making around reps it's notable about mcfaden and what he was dealing with and maybe being on a snap count the decision around um Isaiah Simmons still leaves more to be questioned about but from an injury standpoint coming out of this one you had Slayton going into uh concussion protocol because he was filling in for the punt return game obviously then you have gunar oesi he's going to be having the reinjured groin injury so we're talking about out for weeks with him that's going to be an interesting uh possibility about going to ir and what the Giants are going to do already having players in this week to try to fill that return void and this is something we talked about even in having in adori Jackson they said oh could they use him in some special teams in return possibilities yeah sure but just like putting Darius Slayton back there and having him get injured this is now a problem why is one of you know right now Jaylen hayatt is still trying to figure out his offensive game we'll talk about quotes from dble on him tomorrow as well if you're going to have that be the case then your third wide receiver really should not be getting involved in there we also talk about Nick McLoud excuse me as I have a little bit of a tickle um if you're watching on YouTube if you're listening you can't tell that but but it is happening uh cornerback Nick McLoud knee injury obviously so he went out we'll talk more about how the adjustment was made in game and what that means for the Giants going forward relative to what we saw from Cordell flat um from Drew Phillips from adori Jackson Etc and then last but not least we also had Carter Coughlin he suffered a pictorial injury he's going to be out for months now whatever you thought he's a special teams contributor he was on the practice squad I think or they filtered him through to there so now you're going to have to see what's going to come this week in terms of the depth chart and how the Giants make some of those adjustments so those are the quick hits on the injury updates for the J into the tight end room here for a second because this was the last notable thing that I thought came out of this game now we may mentioned this in our post game saying we're Andy and I wrong in terms of where uh Daniel Bellinger was in this game from a rep share count so I mentioned uh manh Herz there he performed well to what he's supposed to perform well in pass blocking 77.6 now here's the problem he was in there for 20 snaps four of them were pass Six were past blocking that's where you get the great score from the Run blocking grade was a 61.9 I'm not even going to scof at that I still think it's a quality grade out of your blocking tight end position he played to a 63.2 overall excellent his pass grade was terrible nobody expects him to catch passes but that's 20 Reps for him Theo Johnson now again is this game script a little bit he's a rookie but he's supposed to be a pass catching tight end first and another weapon for the offense and Brian dable well he plays 61 reps on Sunday 40 pass reps 80 pass blocking 13 run blocking now none of the grades are particularly good he is a rookie 46.6 in the pass 47.9 in pass blocking and you give him credit for making the effort a 33.6 in run blocking what the heck happened to Daniel Bellinger Daniel Bellinger saw 16 reps in this game eight passing one pass blocking seven run blocking now pass blocking a 69.6 on one rep 54.6 in the pass game overall and then a 57. seven in the Run blocking so does he have value of course are you playing from behind yes you are as well but what this tells you at least on its surface right now the what the watch for is if we're talking about the Giants needing to play from behind at least on Sunday offensively Brian dble told us we're going to make sure that we keep manherz in to help with the pass blocking to make sure that our blocking is sound and then if we want to have that weapon we're going to be going with Theo Johnson it just creates this new pecking order of where okay um you know Jack of all but master of none for Daniel Bellinger he's pretty good in different areas but if you're not going to get enough opportunities for him what is the value of having him on the field versus having neighbors having W Robinson if healthy having a player like Darius slayen having Jaylen hayatt but when you're disc you're making the discrepancy between 12 Personnel versus 11 and how you want to work the formations I think we're talking about potentially seeing some 12 person flexing Theo Johnson out off the line at times moving W Del Robinson and Malik neighbors around I just it's going to be interesting to see how offensively this team prepares itself going forward but incredibly notable now the grade wasn't great so will that change going forward now the grade wasn't great but the offense had to go in a very specific Direction trailing early in this game so much of this is kind of listing the questions and then seeing where it goes from there but but inside of all this as I said back at the top I'm talking about Malik neighbors having a nice performance to start I thought you know wand Del Robinson getting the ball in his hands making a couple players miss you know 44 yards a big chunk of that is after the catch on one play offensive line mostly positive returns let's let's try to build on that right so overall it's positive things but there these little snap wrinkles when we look at reps and who was on the field offensively you just want to keep an eye on more than anything else so I find that interesting we'll see how they talk about it again Brian dble in these quotes really defensively focused and an area that phase of this team that we knew was going to be interesting coming of the year that was going to be fluid we'll find out as we work into week number two if it stabilizes like he suggested but more on that tomorrow as we'll go into the snap count on that side of the football in Greater detail last thing that we want to mention here of course looking forward to the Washington commanders the Giants are on the road they're plus two and a half so usually it's a three-point going that way means neutral sight they'd be a slight favorite over under is set as 43 and a half over with our friends on FanDuel you come out from a week ago where Jaden Daniels excuse me on Sunday but this past week you'll be looking at Jaden Daniels who in his rookie debut 17 of 24 completed over 70% of his passes tried to be risk adverse no touchdowns no interceptions took a couple sacks came out with a 93-1 rating had a long of 32 184 yards he also rushed 16 times for 88 yards right so they're trying to keep it consistent don't too far behind see if Jaden Daniels can give you some razzled dazzle and go from there now they lost that game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3720 and Baker Mayfield look like the next coming of Johnny Unitus but that's where these teams are right so you go back and you think about the Eagles taking on Green Bay you think about Dallas taking on Cleveland you think about Washington in Tampa and you think about the Giants at home against the Vikings guess what the division spread itself out after week one kind of the way we thought it would but this game matters if you want to wipe away the Vikings and move forward to Washington and get a win and get a division win depending on the fashion in which you do it it'll at least calm you down a little bit it's not going to look perfect Daniel Jones is not going to turn around and play the best game of his career after playing maybe the worst game of his career it's just not going to happen but it doesn't mean the team overall can't be better and frankly after a week one performance like that from the Giants it's only because you're playing the commanders that that that line is just plus two and a half I can't imagine if you talked about well Cleveland's interesting they had a bad game but they're still a better team but Dallas yeah I don't know even want to think about what that Line's going to be we've seen some large ones it was plus n and a half for the Patriots they went outright in their week one uh I think Cincinnati was laying nine and a half in their game as well so there's a lot of instances in week one where it got close to double digits I don't know if we'll see depending on how the Giants play this upcoming week what that line could look like over the next two and three games for them but that hey that's for another day as it stands right now early line out 43 and a half being the number I mean honestly how could you think about that any other way than potentially talking about a team that put up 20 points against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers you know are we living in another 27- 10 27 to maybe 14 if we want to Dream a Little Dream for the Giants or is there ways for them to be successful so we'll start to break that down when we get into Thursday and Friday matchups that we want to attack for the Giants as we look forward to that game but as it stands right now we knew they would be underdogs they're going to be underdogs now probably the rest of the way shy of the Carolina game as it stands right now and we'll just have to see how they prepare and then how they ultimately play on Sunday that being the case guys we're gonna come back in tomorrow talk about defensive snaps get into those quotes from Brian dable why did they do what they chose to do pick up the notes about who's being brought in who's getting some tryouts who's getting some run is anybody automatically getting elevated from the practice squad we'll take a look at that as well for the New York football Giants and then we'll start to focus in on in the trenches how can the Giants win those battles against the Washington commanders and where are some of the key matchups in the wide receiver room in the secondary that we think the Giants are going to need work hard to shut down and also make the effort to expose to have some success you get us over on YouTube at one giant podcast you pick up up pick us up pick up us pick us up over on the podcast feed please please please go
