This New NFL Rule Could Be HUGE For The Cincinnati Bengals

[Music] Bengals fans what is going on Stone shields on hand for another edition of Bengals breakdown thank you so much for joining us here on a Monday a little bit kind of a different show today as we wait for the Bengals to cut down on their roster further obviously we talked about how last week the Bengals waved 11 players more transactions to come but as we're kind of in this period where we're waiting for the Bengals to announce what exactly those moves are we're going to break uh break down this new rule that the NFL implemented this year in regards to short-term IR so that's kind of going to be the focus of today's show we're going to list a few potential candidates for this new rule for the Cincinnati Bengals and that's going to be our focus of today's show here at Bengals breakdown but before we get into that I want to remind you guys about our August like battle against our Ravens Channel as you can see we do have a leag uh you know we've got some momentum here you know looks like we're going to be in a good position to kind of win this battle but let's finish strong here throughout the end of August help us out hit that thumbs up icon for us on today's video like you Ravens in this like battle in the month of August and like today's video for us right now all right so let's kind of dive into what this new rule is so now basically you can carry two extra players on the initial 53 man roster that you place on IR to return later in the season by later in the season I mean week five so if you place them on this short-term IR they are out for the first four weeks of the NFL season now the old R old rule you had to carry that injured player on your 53 man roster before placing them on IR obviously there was some drawbacks to that because you might have to cut a guy that you didn't want to cut and then that guy gets picked up on waivers by another team and you essentially lose that player but this year the NFL is letting uh teams keep up to two guys placing them um on the short-term IR to be out for those first four games that kind of gives you two extra roster spots in a way so if you got a guy that's banged up that's missed some time they are a perfect candidate for this list so we're going to break down some Bengals that I think would fit in that the Bengals are going to utilize on this short-term ir and again this will get announced tomorrow when they cut down their roster 253 guys They will announce if they do this with one or two players so here's kind of the list and we'll start from the top here with Bengals defensive end miles Murphy now it was reported that he was going to be out four to six weeks with that knee spraining that he suffered and um you know if he's going to be able to or if he's going to miss those first four games of of the Season he really makes a ton of sense to go on this short-term IR for Cincinnati and I think he's probably going to miss the first four games as unfortunate as that is for the Bengals I don't believe that he we will see him early on so he to me is a prime candidate for this list obviously miles Murphy Bengals uh first round draft pick last year had high expectations going into kind of training camp his role certainly going to increase especially with the season long injury that cam sample suffered his role goes up and it certainly uh gets increased but miles Murphy probably not going to be ready the first four weeks so I think he's the perfect guy to kind of go on this short-term ir and of course you're not going to wave miles Murphy being a first round pick from two years ago so I think he is really the perfect candidate to go on this list for Cincinnati which leads us to the pin comment of today's show will the Bengals Place Miles Murphy on short-term IR sound off for us in the comments section type why for yes or n for no at the pin comment of today's video another guy on this list the Bengals draft pick here in 2024 is McKinley Jackson McKinley Jackson's been banged up and we haven't gotten a ton of information onto what exactly um kind of is going on or I guess how serious his injury is Right remember seeing him out at the rehab field during Bengals training camp Bengals pick uh on the defensive line there the defensive tackle position out of Texas A&M Bengals have a lot of high hopes for McKinley Jackson in the future but we haven't really seen a ton of him through the preseason and training camp so I again don't know exactly how serious his injury is but if they don't think he's going to be out there for the first couple of weeks first four weeks he also is a prime candidate for this roster spot for Cincinnati and um looking at this defensive uh tackle uh depth chart here for the Bengals um he's kind of in that spot where you know he could potentially get a lot of playing time going forward when he's healthy again this room really worries me and I think he's a guy that the Bengals are going to look to to step up but certainly he's going to have to be healthy at some point this year in order to do that so again I do think he is a candidate to make this short-term IR list for the Bengals when that gets released tomorrow want to that could potentially be on that list for Cincinnati again we're talking about guys that could be placed on shortterm IR this new rule is allowing up to two guys to get placed on there um which essentially gives the Bengals two extra roster spots as opposed to last year where they would have to put guys that are banged up on the 53 men before putting them on IR potentially cutting someone that they would like to stick around ultimately Jake brownie backup quarterback for the Bengals dealing with that rib issue Um Zack Taylor really hasn't gone into detail too much about his injury just saying he's going to miss some time and we haven't really gotten an update about how serious that issue is for Jake Browning so if that rib issue is something that's going to sideline him for a decent period of time he also could be a guy that really fits the bill for this um you know new rule that the NFL has implemented Jake Browning also obviously filled in uh admirably for Joe burrow at that quarterback position last year taking a look at some of his numbers really kept the team of flatting they kind of were really in it till pretty much the end of the season trying to VI for a playoff spot so Jake Browning another guy that could potentially be a candidate for this list Bengals certainly hoping he will be ready to go week one but if it's a serious issue that they kind of haven't you know gone in too much detail with he could be a guy that finds himself on this list if the Bengals don't think he's going to be ready the first four weeks of the Season got to throw a s Mims on this list as well again Zack Taylor we're at the point of the Year where we don't really have a ton of information about these injuries right during the regular season we're going to have a lot more information on these guys and kind of understand what exactly is going on with their health but um amarius Mims we don't know too much we know he strained that pectoral um muscle and Zach Taylor said he wouldn't rule out the possibility of him being ready for week one if that injury is something that is a lot more serious than the Bengals are you know essentially saying at this point he could find himself on this list as well um again I think he really was going to compete with Trent Brown for that starting opening day spot I think he honestly had pulled ahead of him and the Bengals were looking forward to him starting week one against the Patriots but with this injury doesn't appear that that is going to happen I really hope he doesn't get placed on this list because again that would mean he is out for at least the first four weeks of the season but he's a guy that you have to monitor and you have to throw him on this list since he is banged up at this point right now for Cincinnati lastly we'll throw the punter on here Brad Robbins he's dealing with that hip flexer issue you might be thinking why would you you know waste this kind of spot on a punter well if things don't go well with Ryan Rico you might want to have Brad Robbins still uh back there even though he is dealing with that hip flexor issue right and it's not really just from a punting standpoint right obviously we know the inconsistencies that both the Bengals punter punters have Rico and but if Rico you know Rico played well in the preseason game but he did have that shank so it's like you can't deal with that inconsistency at the punter position if you're Darren Simmons Zack Taylor and the Cincinnati Bengals and also it's not just punting it's holding right so if there's an issue with Rico you want to have Robin still there because you know he has that experience holding for Evan mcferson you would hate to have bring in a guy that's never held for mcferson and um you know force him into action during the regular season for the Bengals so it could be um you know worth keeping a guy like Brad Robbins um you know on the short-term IR look I don't know what the market is like around the league for punters if anyone would even pick up Brad Robbins I really have no idea but again you just want to have that consistency you don't want to give Evan mcferson a new holder right when you know the important game start so he could be a guy to also be on this list but there you have it those are five potential candidates for this short-term IR again new rule this year that guys uh that teams can place two guys on this short-term IR um essentially giving them two extra roster spots as opposed to last year when um they would have to essentially put those guys on the 53 man roster
