College Football Season Previews With Kyle Kirms - San Jose State

um Brent Brennon is gone after seven years nealo takes over and that's the guy he's been he was at Navy for like 20 years he was at Navy forever um he's he's he just lost the Navy job they moved on to Newberry what that two years ago so this is he was with with navy for like 18 years or something um so now he takes over the San Jose State Job um they bring in stutsman the new OC I don't really know much about him he was with Texas State he was with Washington State um and but they uh they brought in a new head coach kept the defensive coordinator Derek Odum is still there at DC um 131st in returning production just seven returning starters for the Spartans um the most important one that's gone is Cordo their quarterback last year probably was their best player um in fact I I read some last year that was saying Cordo uh had a good chance of winning Mountain Plus West player of the year which obviously didn't happen but he they he was good their quarterback was good um EMT Brown is gonna come in and play quarterback this year he was cam Ward's backup at Washington State correct yes yes he was so yeah EMT Brown's going to come in and play quarterback not a ton of experience but he he was uh the backup to cam Ward at Washington State last year as far as the rest of the offense I mean both running backs are gone they brought in a kid from Grambling State who was an rb1 last year and he has experience but no question there's a drop off at running back they lost their top receiver they lost their tight end uh they did Brak out bring back a few receiving weapons though um offensive line gutted four starters on the offensive line gone I don't know how what what can you say positive about the San Jose State offense anything yeah this offense is a complete question to me with um like you said I call him Coach Ken because I'm not g to mess with his name but Coach Ken he coach the Navy forever and we all know how Navy plays um they run the ball they're the option team and he was asked about it he said that he didn't plan on fully bringing the option over but go look at all their transfer additions EMT Brown if you look he's an improviser he's a guy who can run he runs the football better than he throws the football I know he hasn't played much but that's how he's listed as that's what everybody's saying he is so he's a running guy so they upgraded in in that spot or running the ball right they're not going to throw the ball as much because cero is gone now they lost their two backs but then they brought in gramlings running back a number one running back so clearly they're still going to run the ball at time and they're going to run it a lot so that's just kind of I I need the committing he he seems not to be committed to fully running the option but I mean with all his moves it seems like they're going to run the football a hell of a lot so yeah I mean I don't disagree with that and then losing all those offensive lineman too I don't know how successful it's it's going to be at least in year one that's another thing you different style offensive lineman I would assume he brought in as well cuz when you have you know you lose all these guys and you're a team that threw the ball a lot and they were a team that had a quarterback that could throw now they have a guy that obviously isn't as much of a thrower probably different style offensive linemen too guys that are more equipped to run block than they are a pass block so I the reason this team is such a question is this offense I have no idea week one week two what we're going to see them do I really don't know how they're going to run their system and what what he's going to do cuz he went 18 years or so or whatever he was at Navy running the exact same system and now he's going to coach a different way at his age at this point I I don't see it I think they're going to be a team that runs the ball probably top 10 in frequency at end of the year and that's just not not necessarily what you expect so especially in the Mountain West other than Air Force hear you all right uh defense lost a couple linebackers lost a few Dbacks the defensive line actually looks okay but this wasn't a good defense last year so I mean maybe the defense takes a small step forward but as a whole I anything you want to say on the defense basic yeah the way that I looked at it is this team um basically they were solid against the uh out against the pass but they couldn't stop the run last year um they need to be improved I mean this is a different coaching St same same DC meaning um the guys that returned they were good at stopping the run so I still expect them to be good at that um but you have to be good against the pass in this in this conference and I don't I don't see them all full wholesale changing that at this point so yeah I I don't love this defense either so there's just a ton of question marks with San Jose State which is weird because I mean I feel like when when it was Brennan and I know I believe he's at Arizona now um you you kind of went into the season knowing what this team was going to do now they're a complete wild card they could they could be really bad or everything get hit and and nobody expects it and they could be really good so they're they're a real wild card team here well I was you you said that the uh the P defense was okay and the run defense sucked last year they did bring back a lot of their defensive line if there's one unit on San Jose State where they retained it would be the defensive line so maybe the run defense is a little better and in turn the defense improves a little bit so maybe uh but still like you said brand new offense brand new pieces I don't know how you could expect there to be success there so let's get to the schedule yeah oh I should had it open it's an easy I I will say the non-conference is it's easy on paper so that helps it's easy on paper he says because I'm not sure what we're getting from Washington State I don't know what Oregon State's going to be cuz they're glorified Mountain West teams at this point I mean hell they have Washington State who would have been their starting quarterback they have their guy so uh so Sacramento State loss I mean win win I'm sorry win Air Force I mean I think that everyone expects that to be a loss but I I H if there's no offense though but if the run defense isn't let's call that question mark but I mean there probably should be a loss they but they're two- one after beating kenesa lose to Washington State beat Nevada that's three lose to Colorado State you sure yeah yeah I think that's a loss all right lose to Fresno lose to Oregon State lose to Boise lose to UNLV wow so after start so so to get over four and a half they're going to have to win the Air Force game and they're going to have to win the Wyoming Game yeah and I don't think they're beating Wyoming I think Wyoming will be able to throw the ball on him yeah under yeah under for SOS they stay real like I said I said it I think three times wild card team they are going to be I I'll be tuned in week two for that game because I think that game will probably be an interesting one because there two teams that we really don't know much about against Air Force and we'll kind of that'll kind of give us like will this team be an easy win for everybody else in the Mountain West or what style this team is going to play so that'll be interesting right next team please prop Beaver next team is Colorado State and I know you like this Colorado State team I do uh so norvell's back for his third season at head coach same defensive coordinator they don't really have an OC because norell runs the offense um they bring back a ton of production 14 returning
