1993 Pharaohs Rally Raid - Stage 7 - Citroen ZX - Mitsubishi Pajero - Eurosport

[Music] [Music] well good evening welcome to Upper Egypt this is day six special stage seven of the 12 FOH rally round five of the FIA World cross country cup and these are the temples of fi close to the Aswan Dam at the top of Lake NASA the greatest man-made lake in the world this is elephantine Island 3,000 years old one of the first settlements in this part of Upper Egypt cave tombs temples and this Blended Beauty of ancient Egypt backdrop to the rally this is Lake NASA 500 km long formed by the Aswan High Dam which opened in 1971 a dam that's 40 m High almost a kilometer wide with 12 turbines that generate 21 million KW of power a lot of problems when the lake flooded the valley back in the 70s 60,000 people had to be evacuated a lot of temples including those at a swan and at Abu simol had to be moved up but now a home for wildlife otter crocodiles water snakes and of course [Music] fishermen so so much for the scenery what's happened in the rally today well it's been another of these days where everything has changed dramatically six stages run now the first of those starting on Sunday from Alexandria and alamain Teo Sal of citon and ryar of Egypt the two winners schleser and arons winning day two alh hadri and arons also on day two day three Oro and Pico winning day four Sal and arons day five Oriel and arons so J the arons of Spain the most winning drive with moment these are today's rally leaders hubor we just saw in the citon this is s alh hadri for Mitsubishi so citran and Mitsubishi fighting hard all through the rally but disaster then for Oriel he tries to take a shortcut through a ridge in the mountains and this is what happens so hubor the man who's been leading for the last 3 days out of the rally the car irretrievably stuck and very for fortunate for him and co- drivers your peard not to fall over this 10 m drop so that Citron is there tonight for the taking and if you can get out there quickly so Hub Orel absolutely distraught about this Oriel the man 19 92 Parry d m you're telling us that there's nothing I can really say it's not bad luck it's really uh punishment for trying to take a shortcut we went off the piece wanted to get back onto the piece and we realized that we couldn't get through it a big problem for us we got through this Gap in the Rocks we realized it was a slippery slope there and there's no way we could get back up it someone had already gone over the top there and we assumed it was okay so we started to follow when we arrived on the other side there was a steep slope sand and black rocks and we realized we were trapped impossible to move forward or to reverse we asked if he thought he was going to fall he said not really because we' stopped and we controlled the car that's why I'm upset we didn't do anything stupid anything foolish I made a mistake I shouldn't have gone where we went it's such a small thing to have happened and such a big result we're out of the rally I could never guess what was going to happen if it was a navigation mistake he said no he said J car has done a great job on this it's a decision we both took try and take a shortcut it's our fault I drive the car it's my decision in the end soft sand ston really bad ground you just can't imagine how bad it was you couldn't stand up on it car started sliding when we tried to move the car it got stuck again firmly wedged on top of these rocks we was he worried about falling out himself now he said I just let myself roll down the slope once I got out but we couldn't move the car I tried everything but that was it it's all over so disaster for citon today but while orel's just telling us the rest of the story the news today from pts P to sport of which citen is a part is that P will their engines to McLaren Formula 1 next year so probably better luck for pts next year all this of course playing into the hands of side alhad does print the man from qar who takes the lead for Mitsubishi now it's the rate he won in 1985 for rothman's Porsche he is now leading today for rothman's Mitsubishi at the expense of this man hub Oro Mr Africa the man who was born born in Ethiopia and has come to love and win in Africa so s Al hadri arriving at the swan at the final [Music] checkpoint just a few kilometers into the bivak lake NASA in the background as always and this is the halfway stage of the rally today as we look at Al hadri the desert Prince the man who started rallying in 1978 he won the phoh in 85 second on the atlas rally last year co- driver Henry Mana of France he's been a daker since 1982 and a man who's won a lot as well he won 1990 Australian Safari with k kiru shizuka for Mitsubishi and he won the Tunisian and Atlas rallies in 1990 with P artig fada so pushing the rothman's Mitsubishi Pajero on 320 horsepower 2 L turbocharger permanent four-wheel drive formul 1 car of the desert this is the T3 prototype leading the rally now and leading it by almost 1 hour passing these old temples all the way up the Nile Valley this part of which obviously is now Lake NASA 20 km wide in some places and 500 km long as we said last night one of the only two man made features that can be seen from the Moon the other being the Great Wall of China side Al hadri and Henry man pushing on now very confident indeed we had a chance to talk to alh hadri about his success today Al yesterday you are so disappointed today you are a leader uh yes I mean for the from the beginning of the race always uh I Tred to be safe and quick uh yesterday we've been really trying very hard uh to lead the rally but we have uh benchers not good but it's okay for me yesterday but today uh we pushed really from the beginning very hard and uh uh no problem for me in the stage stage being very rough also not easy today and orol the S win he's I think lost or somewhere he's go right I go left and I come to the Finish he's not there and I know I win the stage and I leave the rally now yeah when did you know that Orel was out um uh somewhere in the middle of the stage because I don't see his truck in front of me and before I am behind him in his dust and after I lost his uh dust I don't see his dust anymore and I don't see his uh truck in front of me just the motorbike and I know he's maybe lost or he s different way I don't know but I got def finish I make sure he's not there I don't know what happened to him when you know that it was completely out what did you think I mean this is the race it's always like this somebody will go out somebody will lead and you don't know the race still also long way to go and from me for myself for my cars my Navigators everybody work 100% uh to try to win the race or at least do a will you know and uh this the answer always come good and a long way indeed day six today and another five to go in conditions just as tough of this this man at the moment fourth overall Teo salinan second fastest on the stage today salinan the 1985 World Rally Champion for perso now driving for the same manufacturer partner citon won the 85 World Rally Championship by winning rallies in Portugal Greece New Zealand Argentina and Finland the only World Rally champion who wears spectacles and the only driver to ever ever won four consecutive World Championship rallies went on afterwards to win the RAC in Britain in 86 enduring himself to British fans W in Finland the same year and in 1987 gave Mazda one of their few rally victories in Sweden his co-driver of course Fred Gallagher from Britain man who won the 8 5 Safari rally the 86 Safari rally and the 89 Safari rally every time with Toyota first time with Canan second two times of vard and also twice won the Ivory Coast rally as a navigator so these two pushing on hard but yesterday of course we [Music] lost Bruno Sai the man who'd been pushing them very hard with engine failure in his mid toishi this is Jean L ler third on the stage today Johan l schleser in his Rena powered buggy third overall now after the demise of oriel one of the true great characters in racing today and he's made the move from sports car racing into the desert French Formula 3 champion 1988 he drove for Williams in Formula 1 World Sports Car Champion twice in 90 and 91 for Mercedes and he won the faroh rally last year driving single-handed a similar buggy became the first single-handed winner ever of a rally raid and also the Cole on day six of the ferah rally looking at these old pylons of the temples of Upper Egypt 3,000 and more years years old the temple safe above the flooded Nile which is N Lake NASA as we're following still the car section of the rally cars and trucks just saw Jean schleser third today driving with Philip M incidentally the another single-handed man single-handed round the world Sailor who won the Parry Cape Town rally in 92 with hoor this is jum Rivier and his duuk Zed buggy the buggy in fact that schleser raced himself two years ago on the Parry Cape Town this is Porsche engined peria having a lot of problems he is in 21st Place one of the most colorful entries on the [Music] rally so Rivier having raced Toyotas and Range Rovers in the past a long time daer longtime pharoh rally Runner but still like most of the people here looking for those elusive first wins in rally rating sponsored by Duke Dey one of the biggest chicken manufacturers in [Music] France here the sound of that glorious Porsche engine getting across the desert floor this is font je Pi font the man who has moved into the lead of T2 which is the modified production section 36 years old he's a mechanic with son Auto RAR the people who prepare these cars best result in rallying 91 he was third on the paridi car so this car with slightly less power 240 horsepower than the prototypes doing a great job font in fact today moving up into sixth place overall right behind Pierre LTE chasing L hard he was seventh on the stage and he has got a safe run now I think because Michel Gambon of Nissan is out with a broken turbo in his Patrol and DTE G is also of Nissan in his torano is out today so his two principal Challengers have gone we had a chance to talk to font when he arrived in Aswan he said I don't worry about the overall classifications I'm uh six tonight it's okay what I'm fighting for is the t2 category at the beginning it was fun there were some attacks from the Nissan but now we've just got to keep going there's no competition really at the moment the shame is that we're only halfway through the rally I wish we could get more forward we're going have to try try to uh Drive gently to reach the arrival six days of this he said it's hell i' got four hours of my closest opponent It's never enough but gives me time to take care and drive gently I'm not fighting for first place now I'm just doing my own race really against the terrain racing myself so great performance by font as we see Salvador Seria also for Mitsubishi this man leading T1 which is the completely standard section of the rally said well yes we are leading T1 overall as well today it's great I'm very happy it's been difficult and complex today the second part today was very hard to win the World Championship in this T1 category sador Seria of Spain again one of the most experienced of the Run there's a chance to see the tracks tonight this is biche bonvan and Andre in their Mercedes they are tonight first in the track section the tracks really promenading rather than racing but it's uh hard work they're servicing cars and bikes on the way too this in third place having one today stage is the rothman's truck Mercedes of Vero Bonet and Casio and as we look at the standings today Al Hadrian brino SCH Sal L we're going to take a short break here sport this is marcole looking at day six of the Pharaohs round Egypt rally this was the action today and this was the start of this morning's 189 km competitive stage start of the Valley of the Lions all today totaling 404 km but there was a mass start similar to those we used to have on the par car in the T desert y Klein Schmid of Germany the BMW Rider who is sixth overall at the moment looking at everyone getting ready story at the moment that Jordi arons Eddie orioli and Franco Pico two Kaja Riders and the KTM Rider dominating the rally arons has won three stages thus far and everyone lining up for the MTH start 31 car started this morning and 22 bikes these are they as farway the rally organizer has the flare ready they're lined up to charge into the desert on the Valley of the land stage all the world looking like a motocross round a Motocross of a difference 189 km ahead of of them they off and Jordi Aron Ed orioli are immediately out front there with Franco Pico on the left hand side streaming out there as well but the story of the stage today is a familiar one now as they head out between this sand and wind sculpted scenery heading north back up the side of Lake nassa we pick up Jord Aarons of Spain and Eddie Oro of Italy riding together as they have done the last 3 days they Kaja teammates and these Kaja 750s these bikes incidentally with the big off-road ducatti engines both of them prototypes not the sort of bike who can go into a local bike shop and buy and arons is first today oreli second and tonight they are just 3 minutes 57 Seconds Apart first and second in the rally number three there on the Lucky Strike bike is arons number two behind him or alongside him most of the time following him Wheel tracks this man Eddie orol of Italy on the albatross Kaja he won the parar in 1988 he woned to gain in 1990 and last year he tried the phoh rally to Mercedes and this is the first problem AR bronze has had the whole rally his foot rest has come loose but it's not a problem because at the time control he simply puts a elastic bungee around it and holds it up and if that's the worst problem his Spaniard is going to have on this rally then he has got no problems at all he was second in 1990 on the farz rally on Kiva this year he did the par car on a Yamaha 850 finishing third in the bite section behind Stephan fans G the vict Lake nassa in the background so we look for Franco Pico on the number one KTM the thean dentist third today as he has been all the [Music] rally Here Comes Pico on the KTM 600 [Music] this dust and rocks always have problem for the bikes but the bikes surprisingly few punches this year we've had I think only three reported over the last 6 days whereas the cars have been absolutely plagued by them citen in particular suffering a lot of rear punchers although they use the same tires as mitsubish is the same Mand the weight distribution is different in the cars and it's put a lot of pressure on the back of the cars this is Yota Klein Schmid BMW racer who has all herself tried car racing she raced at spa in the 24 hours of a BMW last year some success finishing the race in the BMW but here on the rally she is riding not a BMW but a KTM LC 4600 got a big wobble on there on the sand that's the sort of conditions this DUS can make today but she's riding into it not backing off getting through there obiously bit worried she was going to get stuck she took a short cut across what what looked like Quicks sand and had to keep the power on to get through it she's learned a lot over the years in 1992 you may remember she finished the Paris Cape Town rally with two broken B and one of her legs Ro much of the rally with Patricia [Music] Smith the other German lady in desert raiding as we're looking now at Eric belad Paris X Formula 3 driver he's on his first bike race this year in the F's rally riding a Honda yra locking up there he's got a bit of a problem thought there was a bit of a drop there stalls the bike a good kick to get it going again off he goes perhaps a little bit over cautious as we said it's his first bike ride on a competitive event lasted six days so far no reason he won't make the next five Jordi Aron's leading in orioli Pico montebelli and moli coming up next r b of Egypt on his Honda XR 650 passing through the man who won the first stage on Sunday at the moment running in 12th Place overall this man is rayan wazo on a BMW 100 RS you can tell by the noise he's a Paris policeman and he's been raiding for years he assisted Hub orial and Gaston Ryan their winning days in the parak car johanny mlti of Italy on a Kawasaki KL x650 one of the last in the classification so that is the bike story today no change at the top but the cars as we saw a very very dramatic day indeed so everyone safely
