EA Sports [Music] welcome to Salt Lake city where the mighty Utah student section is ready ready to turn this place into a cauldron of noise bcle Stadium home to the Utah youths what a showdown we have in store a couple of Big 12 teams squaring off in what could prove to be a huge game as we'll see the Texas Tech Red Raiders taking on the 12th ranked team in the land the Utah youth for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis David Pollock and Jesse Palmer with me guys it's time to get it going [Applause] the Red Raiders will get us started with the opening kickoff he thought about bringing that out for a half second but he'll take a knee and they'll bring it to the 25 [Music] on first down here comes this offense he wants to throw they're trying to get to it snagged in the middle it's Bernard this is the kind of run that falls in the category of sanction VI Ence as he's up to the 31 well they knew it wasn't going to be easy against this defense throwing the football right they've got a pass rush this quarterback was going to be under duress he gets drilled but he gets his first completion on the opening drive of the game it's going to look like this for rest of the way and I don't care if I get it by two by 20 by 30 by 40 I just I just want to get the first down understanding the situation understanding where the sticks are doesn't have to be sexy but I got to make sure I get to that stick get to the first down Mark they've got it at the 36 it's a first and 10 to the air it's rising just a short pass to the tight end and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pickup ever since they invented the forward pass the tight ends have been running the drag and getting the first down I think it's because the tight ends so much versatility you know they can block and stay in the formation or they can rele and come out but either way if the quarterback's patient most of the time that drag route's going to come out that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there didn't get much on first down it's second and nine from the gun the running back has it that one did not go well tackled in the back field for a loss of six listen I know there are a lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put his face in the fan get close to the line of scrimmage and tackle and on the opening drive that he's out there he gets a huge tackle for loss early that is a statement play some third down conversions tougher than others this one a long one on third down from the 43 looking to throw and he needs a chunk play fires to the tight end pass the 45 on away he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down the you come to the line with a fresh set of downs the give to the running back from the shotgun he's knocked down at the 34 but they're sort of hitting them in the mouth with a sixy up there well it's plays like that that will help this offense stay in Rhythm all game long if you can have that kind of success on first down running the football it just opens up your entire Playbook moving forward to the air it's Ry firing to the right complete he's run out of bounds but he's got enough to move the sticks what's a great job by the quarterback there understanding you're being blitzed you know you're not going to be able to hold on to it very long so find the back get it into his hands quickly let him go pick up the first down to the 26 yd line and a first down they'll run it out of the shotgun and after the tackle that will bring us to the end of the first quarter first quter game we'll get this quarter going with a second down play on the ground it's Bernard able to make the stop after a gain of two to the 22 I like feeding my guy I like getting my running back touches feeding the ball so he can break some of those big runs but I'm also okay with these little ones set the tone stay [Applause] balanced already well within field goal range wonder how aggressive they'll be on Third and long from the 22 moving the running back trying to get the D to tip its hand feeling some heat grabbed in the middle it's Parks he's brought down but he's got him inside the 10 first and goal from the eight and that's a really good example of a quarterback and his intended target both being on the same page the timing was almost perfect on that play that's why they were able to convert the third down now setting up first and goal got it first down here with time for maybe one more play until the two-minute warning we'll take a quick break as we have reached the final two minutes of the first half and the youths are threatening on first and goal they'll try to get it in with the Run push down for the tackle the big defensive tackles in the middle they're not always the best pass rushers but they are strong and I say scra they put their hands on you you feel it they lock people out on the line of scrimmage they create separation they wrap running backs up and usually they don't get out of the midst of those big boyss and the defense holds firm no pick up at all on that play it's looking like they're going to have to try to throw this one into the end zone here on third down David quarterback's got to be careful can't get greedy because you know these windows they close fast extremely tight Windows find your big body guys that you know can win in contested situations here on third down third and goal and they'll try to pass it in and he's got it touch down well your opponent can't beat you if you don't give them the football and they were able to possess it throughout the entire first quarter and they finally cap it off with that impressive rushing [Applause] touchdown they'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point is good and it's seven nothing that is what they mean when they say ball control a 14 playay touchdown drive and they close the deal with the seven Y for the [Applause] score and they desperately wanted to attempt a return but decided not to instead they'll take the Touchback first down here for the offense quarterback making adjustments with his receivers they'll crank up this drive with the pass grabbed over the middle it's Brooks they make the stop trying to pick up just a little bit at a time to get to that first down marker looking to pass on second down the quick out he steps out of bounds but he's got enough for a first down throw him to the spot and that's EX exctly what he did to pick up the first down and that's so many hours of doing this together you know exactly when he's going to break on that out route you know what kind of speed he has cuz you've thrown it so many times nice Rhythm and timing and you could tell that was experience between receiver and quarterback excellent coverage and good use of the hands to knock it away listen a lot of time tips and Reflections are because you got great eyes and vision on the quarterback you see him release the football you break on it you tip that thing and make sure the receiver can't get it right back up top on second and 10 and he got smack just as he released the pass it's incomplete yeah and I'll give him toughness points he stood in there stared down the barrel got whacked but I won't give him smart points because he threw into the double coverage you got to make a better decision than that so try not to get walloped and definitely don't throw it another C they played that screen nicely he tried to find his way to the marker but it'll be fourth down oh a big decision here early as they leave the offense on the field in their own territory they want to keep this opening drive alive they're throwing for it on fourth down makes the grab and it's PL for the first down turns out to be an easy conversion for this offense as they move the chains on fourth down there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer and the Red Raiders come to the line with a new set of downs looking to pass it's [Applause] Wharton zings it complete to the right it's really nice when you're an offensive coach and you can basically attack the whole field when you got an arm like this and you can just boom put on a line unleashes one deep he's got it in the End Zone touchdown Red Raiders yeah and the passing game comes through man and we need more of that in the second half an extra point away from tying this football game you trailed a little bit in the first half stayed calm if this passing game can continue to heat up look out in the second half so here comes the kickoff after the touchdown and the last thing you need right before the half is to give up a big [Applause] return and he'll just take a knee in this drive will start at the 25 one more play before the teams head to the locker room he's looking to throw it unloads to the wide out got his Man Down field big Gator there that'll look good in the stat column but not quite enough to put any points on the board before more time EXP fires here in the first half first with the game we all locked up here in the third quarter as he set to kick it away and they thought about a return Then thought better of it they'll bring it out to the 25 Texas Tech ready to send the offense back onto the field first drive of the second half always fun to watch you see what type of tweaks were made at the half especially when you're locked up in a ball game like this one yeah and it's been a good game I mean it's been a little bit of back and forth in a feeling out process and now once you get in the second half who's going to get aggressive call who's going to take some shots try to make some plays and really go for it yeah it's interesting I think as play callers right now you learn a lot about these coaching staffs with respect to who does make the best adjustments there's a lot of coaches that believe we're just going to be who we are we're going to keep doing what we do we're just going to do it better but then there are others that tweak things a little bit on offense and on defense we're going to find out here and a great job by the offensive line if you're going to run the ball right at the middle you better control the line of scrimmage you can see the center the guard the tackles doing a good job getting on their guys just enough where this running back can get into space and make the big game now on first down from the 43 yd line quarterback will audible one back in the back field he gets the carry still on his feet at the 45 he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down first down you know you always want to establish the running game how about this offense nothing fancy run the football be physical get a big game now they've moved it just inside the 40 first and 10 from the 39 he's going to pass caught in the back field it's Douglas you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six I like the decision by the quarterback here just get the ball out of your hands get it to your playmaker a lot of times he'll dance and make even bigger plays than he did here but it was still a positive game across the 25 he's got room and the defense finally makes the stop after the sweet run and good gain you know you start day one of training camp running your base runs you need a few yards you run these plays you need a first down you run these plays rep them over and over and over again they're not sexy they're not pretty but in the end they're effective and they get you that new set of downs when you need them might as well run him until they stop him he's got it again they make the stop but you can't give up four yards a chunk on the ground down in this area of the field it's at the 18 after the productive first down play it's second and six an unforced error there they don't get the snap off in time offense took a little bit too much time at the line there and here comes play number six of the drive back to throw it's Morton makes the catch and steps out of bounds but short of the first down Mar well that's great time invite the quarterback and receiver on that out route if you're going to be running that against man coverage like they were there that ball has to be thrown early and it's got to be thrown out the front of the receiver and they execute it perfectly on Third and short they'll try to pick it up on the ground here the Red Raiders have enough for the first down [Applause] and the Red Raiders come to the line with a fresh set of downs they'll give it to him again and he runs it all the way down to the three yd line before he's finally knocked down it's all tied up this offensive line they want the pressure they want everything to go through them here they're saying look let's just run the ball let's get this thing down closer and closer to the goal line let's bleed some clock and put ourselves in position to win going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down give to the running back he's got it down to the one yd line right on the doorstep of per well they only needed one yard so no mystery there turn around hand it off and he finds a way to get it and now this offense on first and goal has a chance to break the tie late the receivers often will run their route based on a side adjustment he's drop behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three the clock stopped two minutes left to play in this one picked up some of what they needed on first down now it's second and goal from the five they'll switch it up here and look to throw takes a hit as he fires nowhere close on that one as he got drilled trying to deliver the football and now they face third down this whole red zone offense thing has been a little shaky they've been stopped twice already maybe they ought to try to score from Deep looking for the touchdown on Third and goal that pass not close as he got drilled trying to deliver it and it'll bring up fourth down well I know it hasn't been a tremendous day statistically for this quarterback but his decision making has been good enough to win this game hasn't thrown a lot of TD so far but when things aren't open he throws it away like on that play right there he's not putting his team in a bad SP spot and that's why they still have a shot and walk out of here with a dou they were able to get a field goal on the board and now they'll kick it away well the offense and special teams did their job right here late in the fourth quarter they put themselves now in position to win this game it all comes down to the defense can they deliver if they get the stop they win this game Utah has it back and the offense coming on to the field and in a low-scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just gets frustrating and you got to put that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful hmer now use it against him yeah David I think for a play caller this is tough right it's like you have to have the perfect play on just to get a first down in these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play breaks this tra man who says you can't run up the middle anymore right everybody thinks I got to make big plays I got to go way out to the left way out to the right way out in space nope right down the middle nice blocking how about the running back you could tell the speed the wheels does a great job getting down the field making a huge rushing play the offense getting set for a first down from the 45 dropping back it's rising it's complete to the left and he gets a Big Tuck of yardage to the 34 yd line well you're seeing the balance this offense has and how they can create explosive plays in a variety of ways we just saw one come in the Run game and now you see one coming in the passing game I'll tell you they've got this defense on their heels fires and picked off and he'll be marked down but what a play to come up with that interception and that just kind of caps off this day it's been a day with not a lot of rhythm not a lot of timing not a lot of guys on the same page and they weren't right there and the quarterback throws an INT and this one After Burner coming at the 30 he was Off to the Races and maybe another step or two and he would have scored but they get him at the 21 yd line less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter and they've got the lead so this is where you have to be able to run the football you can get a hat on a hat up front and just give these running backs a cre they can get you the yards necessary to end this game defense is about firing off getting offensive guys and staying in your gaps everybody knowing where they're supposed to be you could tell the defense everyone was right where they're supposed to be nowhere to run they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one they're facing a third down the give to the back that will be the final play as a clock strike zero here a little Sports history David upset is the only horse ever to defeat man of war and that's why we call games like this an upset I really had no clue that was a real thing but I do know what is an upset this team was unranked beat a ranked team but you out and got your respect you gained it now let's build on this throughout the season one win great win now let's go ahead and build some momentum in the future re some might say you're not a one trick pony with that reference and obviously this was the team the unranked team that had the horses to get this thing done too much Firepower just too much explosiveness on offense great defense what a tremendous win
