Enough Said: Gophers' loss to North Carolina, Vikings season start, and Twins losing streak

[Music] unfortunately there were a lot of things that happened tonight um that are uncharacteristic of our football teams uh with some penalties of some crucial situations and uh a lot of them are hustle mistakes second and goal welcome back to the wide right edition of the enough said program on a beautiful day at the great Minnesota get together we have a an outstanding crowd they were not coached no that is all spontaneous and organic we love being out here for enough said my name is Dan barrero Justin guard of course with me as usual and Lori fiser out this week Natalie Briner here we go our our our most valuable utility player kind enough to join us for her first trip I think to the great Minnesota get together doing this show right now my big Fair debut yeah I love the fair though so you know I'm happy to be here Awesome by way apologies to all the Lorie fiser ex-boyfriends that are lined up behind us on Nelson the line is to the grand stand with guys from Bla St Cloud State who knows where else she's not here this week I think that's why she didn't want to run into all of you I think that's what happened all right up first you saw PJ Fleck the Gophers open their football season last night against North Carolina the game delayed by rain but it was of course right here on fox9 um Minnesota ended up losing 19- 17 um Dan Justin a sloppy game lots of ER it was um you know I think one of the comments from PJ was that you know you it was one of those games you didn't want to end I just because it's close doesn't necessarily mean it's good it was not a very wellplayed game I didn't think at all um and I think gy you were there but to me a very disappointing start because I don't think Carolina is great they lost of course their their their stud quarterback to the pros Drake may they lost their new quarterback Brad Johnson's kid with a bad injury during the game and the vi and and the and the Gopher still could not beat them with a guy who I didn't really think was all that ready to play they even gave up on a on a blown coverage a 30-yard pass that led to Y the game-winning field goal you had bad penalties you had an offense that to me no matter what we're talking we think we're doing that this is a new era looked very much like the offense as we've seen before and if I didn't know any better I'd say did CC Manis really leave cuz it it was to me it it it felt like the same kind of performance except for a little bit of juice obviously at the end yeah the juice at the end is what they have to draw and hopefully move forward with but disappointing is the word sloppy as Natalie described it was absolutely correct it was the penalties it was illegal formations on punts that stuff is not supposed to happen well holding defensive holding penalty kept their Carolina's touchdown driveit and that was early in the drive when they were I think backed up you think he got a strip sack you think he got a little bit of a momentum there um it was frustrating all around and why it's doubly frustrating at least from my view is as we know Vikings are about to start twins are going to be in the postseason here wolves and wild are about to start like you kind of lose the Casual fan around here in Minnesota when you drop a game against a good power like a power five team we'll see what North Carolina is I don't know if they're great I like you said they have some quarterback issues as well now you've got just a couple of weeks where you're kind of going to be on the back burner you're going to be on the back page before the Iowa and Michigan games at the end of the month and that's where it can hurt you a couple of different times at least in my view is you had an opportunity National audience with a good crowd despite all the rain to maybe take hold for a couple of weeks and get people interested and say this this is going to be something different and now you're going to you still have time to do it there's 11 games but you miss out on those couple opport there just was a sameness to it and and again to me it was really the start of the second half offensively that killed them they had I think their first three drives three and out three and out in a fumble yeah and to me that was a stretch where cuz they had shown a little off at the end of the half right okay maybe they figuring this thing they're it's 14-7 correct at the half and and you're feeling like okay maybe they have taken a little bit of control of this game but they didn't follow up with anything offensively um and and to me then you're playing you know you're playing that risky game of well can we make a last second field goal they didn't it was UNC now I don't know where you were when the kick was made y but it was Eerie to me because it looked true until it I mean it it knuckle ball to the right all of a sudden terribly and they're on the TV broadcast they were talking about why did you have the last running play moving the ball further to the right it usually is we're going to if we're going to do one more play we're going to make sure it's still going to be in the center it makes no sense I didn't understand it at all enough said well done pretty good one for one well done def by the way could get off the field in the third that's that's also true that's eight minute drive to start the third quarter yeah all right the C Manis thre three touchdown passes by the way yeah that's what I heard or maybe had two and one on a run I just said you listened and then you didn't listen sorry about that all right the Vikings season kicks off September 8th in New York against the Giants the game Fox N9 at noon the team is missing some key players due to injury including TJ hackinson but they also brought in a new number three quarterback well the you know finally it's here right that's the sort of at least we're getting enough it's close to it enough where we can stop obsessing over a lot of meaningless things that happened in the preseason I'm not as obsessed as a lot of people are about who's going to be our number three running back I understand Jones gets hurt a lot but I think we worry about the wrong things we still got to worry about the big things and when you throw in that Addison may not be ready hackinson is definitely not going to be ready to me it's all the more re and you have a new quarterback even though he's got a little bit of pedigree has really struggled in the league right to he's trying to save his career right so if you're the head coach you have to commit to what you say you're going to to commit a a more boring offense I hate to say it hand the ball off to Aaron Jones get the ball to him in space don't be afraid to take the little play don't worry about whether all of your plays are on sports center right just try to get first downs take a little pressure off your QB take a little pressure off the fact that you don't have all your skilled people at least the start of the season and to me that's the key to this thing if they can do those things and really commit to and have success on the ground in the short passing game then I think maybe they can live to tell something after a really difficult first half of the schedule well that's the key is we'll talk about in the 10 days leading up to this opener this opener not unlike the Gopher opener against North Carolina feels massive yes because of the schedule after that that includes I think Houston that includes I think San Francisco that obviously has Detroit you've got Aaron Rogers like they're going to be underdogs probably in seven of their first eight games their first n something like that you hate to put it all on one game a home opener for the New York Giants but the New York Giants are good right I mean their last good moment except against us in the playoffs was against the Vikings in that divisional round game a couple of years ago when the Vikings went 13 and four and lost the home game so this first game that's how their QB got his contract he got he got paid Daniel Jones loves us Daniel Jones loves us the Giants don't even like him but they're stuck with them no they are and that's why that first game feels weightier than it does now it's the NFL weird things happen every week I also want to see what this defense looks like the revamp defense with B flow brought in some guys to his liking it seems like in the free agent Market obviously viously Dallas Turner is a rookie that we never talked about because JJ McCarthy got all the headlines so uh to your point if they can play that complimentary football and the defense is better than a year ago maybe they can surprise some people here early but that first game just feels weightier than a home opener it should be but you're right I think it is and I mean you know again it's boring to discuss but the head coach has been drilling down on it so maybe he does understand it they've been really good about not turning the ball over in in the preseason can that translate it doesn't have to but it needs needs to be the message because that was a huge issue all kinds of leakage last year because I think we were second worst in terms of turnovers in the league right and I the the the Vikings whatever they are they don't have that kind of margin for error so that's two things it's offense not giving up the ball and to your point maybe it is you got some new interesting names defensively can they take the ball away which they did a decent amount again second and third stringers in the preseason are we ready we didn't even stop we didn't even stop yeah supposed to do it when we're still talking we're pausing yeah you guys know what to do now that was the mistake I think yeah all right well the twins dropped to Third and the American League Central they lost all three games to the Braves this week now they start a new series at home this weekend against the Blue Jays don't we just need the postseason here yeah I mean this was this was a bad week for you're assuming we're going to be in it well they they have had B down to three I know well and Boston that's true and Kansas City now is kind of surging a lot of people think we're not going to win the division that's all that's the missed opportunity from the last coup couple of weeks and we talked about it last week it's kind of been the same discussion with the twins all season long they're a decent team that has some good moments that you know plays in a division that's not great that has definitely gotten fat on the white socks who are chasing history I think they need 12 victories to not set the record there's no chance they get 12 victories next they're they're immortality of Badness of all time yeah so all the teams in the division have benefited from having Chicago but it's just that no one really wants to come up and take that final wild card spot even though as Dan mentioned Boston now is kind of lurking it's so it's it's a weird thing to discuss that it's obvious they're in a really good spot to make the postseason they're still dealing with some injuries they're still dealing with trying to get people back we don't know the status of when they're coming back or how good they're going to be trying to find you know a third and fourth pitcher if they need one the bullpen has not been very good here recently either so it's just kind of a a weird conversation that seems ongoing that we've continued really since the first couple of weeks of the Year well they as odd as this sounds they've got their two best starters going this weekend is it Toronto I think Toronto's in town and you know when you look at the rest of the rotation now which is because of injury and other issues you know not all that established I think these guys cuz this home stand's been a disaster so far they just got swept by Atlanta they they need their two pitch I mean if they like get swept this weekend or even lose two out of three then you worry that it's starting a snowball because there is no reason to think kareah is back soon none buckton maybe but then you're back to but what is he going to be right I mean the the the description of well his hip hurts him so bad that sometimes he just has to lay flat and you're going right what are we doing here I know the feeling well I know the feeling but I'm not counting on the play center I don't think so so you know it again there's only one team that could pass them in terms of the wild card it appears right now I don't know how you know what Boston has left in them but to I think now we even have to say it's not an we can't assume they're going to make the postseason if they're heading to a stretch where they're going to continue to play as poorly as they did bad base running actually the third base coach bad decision bad play in left field um not a fundamentally sound team right now well all that stuff gets magnified when you are trying to they were I think obviously trying to catch Cleveland to win the division a couple of weeks ago they let a couple go against them they let a couple of go the next week in Texas and all those things had the cumulative effect a little bit they they thought you were profound with that last statement obviously I agree yeah I think I really made a good point a really good point [Music] [Applause] us a better Ovation whether we deserve it or not pause for Applause is what it says in the camera right there so we're going to wait yeah go ahead all right well last May Minnesota lawmakers passed a bill requiring all schools to create a policy for student cell phone use some already had some um in effect but lots of them are trying to get them done now with the start of the school year the deadline isn't until March though but if you have a child in school or you work in a school you know cell phones can be such a huge distraction to learning we've talked about this a lot on the on the radio and maybe on on TV before but I thought it'd be kind of good giving the time to have a back to school segment dedicated to my daughter giovans who's in the audience today talking directly to her with her buddy Sarah and um I you know I don't know I I haven't really talked to her much about this issue but there's a part of me that says we're kidding ourselves thinking that we can create that kind of Separation to something that's become an appendage to most of us certainly including kids but every indication I have for for Education people I trust teachers I trust say if you have to find a way to whether you put them locked them lock them up in a desk or you have whatever system you have that the degree of distraction that is created with those phones is is incalculable we got another a number of other challenges but that this one is one you feel like you should be able to get a little bit of a handle on and you know let's let's throw the teachers out there a a little bit of a life preserver give them at least a shot at at at at keeping the attention of their kids now they still won't all the time but it's a start is it not it's got to happen it is and I can't my kids don't have phones yet they have the watches which I'm sure will also be a distraction I'm sure we'll probably keep those in the backpack but yes for the life of me can't believe this is even a discussion that we don't if you go to like a Chris Rock comedy show you have to put your phone in a bag you have to lock it up you turn it in you go get it at the end of the show if you go to the Masters if you're lucky enough to do that you have to put your phone away they don't allow them we have that same rule here for our audience we do they had they had to hand in all their phones happy we'll take pictures with them after we we check think how much more distracted they would be if they could continue to look down on their phones that's the thing I I I for me don't understand why this is even a discussion at all it doesn't mean you have to check them in at the front office at 7:30 when you get to school and pick it up at 2:30 but when you get to class put them somewhere keep them in your desk I don't even understand why it's even well you know what discuss I think parents are part of the problem and I don't get that because I think there are some parents who I got to get a hold of my kid call the office what if there's a bomb threat or whatever and look we we all you know want to be as careful and Vigilant as we can on those kind of issues they're still pretty damn rare but I do think that's some of the push back I want to have that but I if if if I call the office and I can't get a hold of anybody in a in a in a difficult circumstance I'm going to lose my mind and I want my kid I want to be able to connect with my kid so I think some of this is a parental issue I really do they still have hard lines at schools I believe and take it from someone who had uh well had to have the office call my parents multiple times throughout my academic career don't we know it we all know it it's very easy to get a hold of people if you need to get a hold of people they all got phones they've all got hard lines we don't need cell phones how much trouble did you get in not too much you're exg depends on the age depends on the age we're talking about all right some teachers might have to also worry about chat GPT this year um students have been using it this artificial intelligence to do papers or some other assignments teachers will have to decide now if the homework is original work well what's funny about the chat GPT thing that we talked about on the radio is that and we had a teacher join us here at the fair that talked about yes the students might be able to get away with chat GPT to write some papers but that doesn't mean they can just blankly type it in and have it all work purpose ly because teachers can also use chat GPT or the same type of AI to figure out who's using it and who's not this is crazy I to me I like the romance of having to look over the person's shoulder that was sitting next to you or borrowing someone who's in first hour second hour for their essay answer was a simpler time right and then you had to paraphrase it a little bit more did you have blue books in your day I loved blue books the blue book is they should bring back the blue book I think a lot of teachers have blue books for the essays and the the romance of that then you had the red ink when would correct it um but this was fascinating to me and it makes sense right because everyone's looking for the easy way out there's been cheating of forms in academics forever whether it's Cliff Notes whether it's borrowing notes whether it's this is another level but this is as you said you have the best story about this yeah the example we had was a teacher who said her the assignment that all her a bunch of her kids use chat gbt for was tell me a little bit about yourself it's like is that where we're at that was her point it's like theying we're in trouble they're not just using it as a tool they can't communicate so that was another reason why I wanted to talk about this today because I knew giovans was going to be in the the crowd you do not use chat gbt is that correct ever I needed to know she says no can I trust her I think her fingers were crossed it's tempting though right there's so many options that we probably don't even know the best ones we probably don't and and teachers probably don't even know about because they're always the cheaters are always two or three steps ahead whether it's drugs in terms of you know for for performance enhancing drugs or cheating on test just remember kids if it's s sounds smarter than you when you turn it in they're going to know like you have even if you use chat GPT you got to dumb it down a little bit take out some of the big words take out some of the syllables you can't just hand it in and expect because the teachers are paying attention to your personality and how you talk in all seriousness I think what a lot of teachers are doing is trying to go old school yeah on taking the eliminating the computer and we're going to write stuff out which I understand could be frustrating if you're so used to I the same way my pen my penmanship's terrible over cuz I'm always on the computer that's true well played that was a good enough said very well time exactly nicely done we're we're working on it we're getting better with each one right well the numbers have been up and down at the State Fair this year the first and second days breaking records and then on Monday the lowest number since the 80s now of course like the Heat and the rain and the flooding and the weather all had to do with that so we'll see how Labor Day weekend this final weekend of the fair shakes out well today is you know Friday is is already huge it's going to be huge all day and and tonight I'm sure when the show runs and Sunday if the if the weather terrorists are right about this one that's going to be the day right high of like 74 and no humidity y I mean it it's going to be packed and look it's it's always been coming here for decades doing shows and so it's always you know the part of it is the story Y is the weather right I mean it's just it's undeniable and just this this year we had that unusual blip where what the number was the lowest since what did you say 2007 2007 which suris 80,000 people does that mean we're just not very Hardy that was a hot hot hot hot that was over 100 degrees something like that I thought we you're the Minnesota and I thought you guys you know prided yourselves on nothing gets in the way of your commitment to the bit if it was cold we would make it we don't do well in the heat and humidity we seem to we seem to handle the the cold better than the heat maybe because we're used to it what's funny though if you talk to you know vendors like you said we've been coming out here for 20 30 years so you get to know people around the fair that that actually work here so when it's 100° and they're slinging fries or making food they're on the grind unlike us true they always talk about it's really the same number give or take you know 10,000 20,000 every single year it's just when they come that's true and and it is all weather dependent and so everyone's expecting if you haven't been to the fair yet you might want to sneak it in a little bit later today a little bit later tomorrow maybe even Monday you know when when things when things tighten up a little bit but the same number of people usually come we hit 2 million generally correct or is a little less than that right around there something I still when I tell I was on a radio show in Arizona and I and I tell people this and they're they're they're confounded and it's one of those phenomenons I really believe that you can't completely appreciate or understand unless you're here seriously I can't cuz I didn't understand it when I got here and and to try to translate it and to say yeah this is this is I mean this is there's something unique about this but that's how many close to two million people you're out of your mind just to go to the fair but here it's real I walked in with a couple of North Carolina fans today did you I just said buckle up you're not going to know what to expect you're in for they're so giddy with the high Victory they won't even I don't think they slept probably true all right time for lightning round first step kind of a downer First Step NHL player Johnny goodro and his brother Matthew were hit and killed while cycling last night in New Jersey they were in their Hometown for their sister's wedding Dan I I you don't even know where to begin on a story this unspeakably sad uh two and and it and a it appears a drunk driver shocker is involved trying in a two-lane road to get around another vehicle that was trying to give the cyclist room tries to come around the right side rather than the left and apparently then runs into the uh the the cyclist and on as you said they're preparing for what's today supposed to be the happiest day of their sister's life it's unspeakable unspeakable hor is the only word for it well every year politicians love to come to the fair and make the rounds we've seen a few this year but not Governor Tim Walls yet now the video we're going to be showing here is from a previous year obviously he's pretty busy on the campaign Trail this year but we'll see if he's going to come this weekend what do you think here's what I'll say to Governor walls coach here's what I'll say to coach you're not going to really call him that all right no I call him that factiously the national people love that traffic is already bad enough we do not need a secret service presence here at the Minnesota State Fair this year we don't you've got to come here forever you're one of us kind of even though you're from Nebraska you cuz you've been you know to events where Secret Service part Como's already backed up all right we don't need Secret Service coming around sun unless you're going to helicopter in behind the grand possible which I guess is possible that's when you're a VP candidate you can when you run for VP you give up your ability to just roll right into the fair maybe you could repel in like you never know all right well the fair is nearing an end this weekend um what's been your favorite part this year actually we have a part from the fair are we ready for this Natalie you don't even know about this and I don't even know if if you have the monitor oh we can't do it yet okay our favorite part is coming up later well I I will say uh I'm nervous for me it has to be I hate doing the stroller rant but the other day I'm behind two hugely wide strollers side by side and then the rest of the family members are on either side they were like 18 across and I'm saying have some respect for the other people around you n Go maybe single file impossible they were all the way across and they almost seem to be proud of it they almost seem to be challenging any but what are you going to do about it because the first one of the strollers looked like like a tank all right well the Upper Midwest Emmy nominations come out next Friday enough said it's been nominated several times but never w a statue thank you yes thank you this is it but we never win the Year this might be the year we're not nominated I'm worried about not being nominated alth the is it better to be not nominated and because if you keep losing no then it becomes a Susan Luchi situation and then people start pitying you I think they do that's why they're all here right now do we have my actual favorite part of the fair this year we have that here it is Natalie do you have the monitor I yeah baby wow with the firefighters that might have been my favorite no wonder Lorie fers got my goodness I'm sorry Ethan you're a mother Natalie what are we doing with this now that's unbelievable I I texted it to Ethan right away he knew is that going to be is that going to be your holiday card new profile pick I like it yeah where are those firefighters by the way just in case anybody else is interested maybe thanking them for their service they're here those guys are popular they tend to show up at the
