there but yeah Jeff Garcia of course de Garcia most famous San Jose State I remember I remember when he came out of nowhere they were trashing team 52 to 17 to beat Stanford like what the hell's going on out there yeah was this guy I mean they had a great run for a little bit I feel like it's unfortunate in a way if you're a fan of San Jose State like that era was Prett like cable for the most part you know for smaller conferences so like no one got to see when Daryl Rogers took over in 73 and and you know from him to to Len styles to Jack Elway John Elway's dad to to Claude Gilbert all the way to Terry Shay and Ron Turner they were winning a lot of games and you you you would just hope that they could capture that now in this era because in this era you know you don't have to look that that uh that far back to a win winning success Mike McIntyre also won 11 games in 2012 Brent Brennan just got hired Away by Arizona he had won seven games you know back-to-back Seasons also you know in 2020 they would have played in the if they had the 12 team playoff in 2020 San Jose State would have been in which which I think is a a fascinating thing because even though they are breaking in a brand new head coach I and Ken monolo I do think that's something very interesting to talk about is California always has a [ __ ] ton of talent um and and keny monolo you know I think is someone that might be able to capitalize he was at UCLA with Chip Kelly so he's probably familiar with some recruiting grounds there and then uh he's from Hawaii you always see a lot of those California teams uh load up on on Hawaiian players so you know not only kontal from Hawaii he played quarterback for Hawaii and won a lot of games at Hawaii so uh what do you what do you of that higher I mean actually actually wait before I before I I dive into that I want to tell you folks out there that uh you are listening to the college football experience part of the sports gambling podcast Network and make early for the National Football League uh keny matolo this is a big uh Army fan right don't you love Army I could I side with Army in the uh yearly debate in Philadelphia yeah the think terrible then huh no he was great he was great coaching Navy and and as they'll be the first ones to point out he they didn't just hire a football coach when you get Ken you get a leader of men dundy Neil M who coached the Naval Academy in the Hawaiian lei and brings his style I'm kind of upet he's not bringing that option with him now he's just bringing not bringing the triple option let's go but he he'll bring a leader of men he'll make them better husbands and better fathers and better workers just citizens of this planet yeah I'm I'm very disappointed too because I I have longed me and Petty C have longed for a California school to run the triple option again because calp was the last team to do it in the FCS and guess what they've been ass ever since they ditched it but um yeah I was looking forward to it I I kind of think like I I really believe like 40 teams in college football FBS should be running triple option yeah I think you can make the case that San Jose State maybe shouldn't just because they're in California like yeah but you know what I mean like they would run a they would run a fun one though a Veer kind of motion you know what I mean well why why change that when you look at you know he's Kenya mono played quarterback for Paul Johnson who was the OC at Hawaii he then follows him to Navy uh and they have great success there I understand the last three years he had some losing Seasons yeah but and and the rule changes but like Troy Calhoun said you know what are we supposed to do well Troy kahun just said I'm gonna make them call it and he's and he's rattling off nine 10 win Seasons every year uh at Air Force I am surprised on why he would do that because you look at his success first off it's hard to recruit at Navy than San Jose State so I understand the logic well that's why we run the triple option but I would also argue that you can't get the type of speed you can get at San Jose you know at Navy with San Jose State and that would make your option even better this guy won 11 games in 2019 and by the way in 2015 he won 11 2016 he won nine 20131 19 2009 110 they would have made the playoffs had we had the 12 team playoffs multiple years and can you imagine Navy in the playoffs or any of those service academies I think would be great for the sport but I I do think he should run the triple option but I still think like San Jose State is one you look at Fresno and Jeff Tedford they get such great speed and like they they just they're like a factory for putting NFL wide outs in you know whether it's uh Devonte Adams or Bernard Barry or Henry Ellard and stuff like they just go back on just and I'm forgetting a bunch David Dunn but in California I don't know that you have to do that but I also think that could be your Edge because you're playing all these other California schools that that a hardly ever go up go up against it Air Force would be the only games where they would go up against it so he's going run and shoot no not going red and shoot they're going spread and Shred my friend I love that you Craig statsman OC coming in running the old spread and Shred I like it I like that name but yeah I'd rather them run the option that's for sure uh people don't want to go to the option too either that's we talking about California California recruits everyone's not jumping excited to go run the option because it doesn't have the future out of him it doesn't not gonna get them ready for the league you know they keep telling me this and look Tommy Frasier never has to pay for a [ __ ] drink in Lincoln Nebraska right yeah yeah but how much is a drink in Lincoln Nebraska 45 but I I'm saying like Okay well tell me tell me what it's not like Colt Brennan and Timmy J Chang and Nick rovic were were NFL quarterbacks no so it's like what what do you I I don't buy into that thing that they're selling of like oh no it wants to do that no I guarantee you you put a you put an athlete there like Michael Bishop still getting getting uh love all throughout Manhattan Kansas and he could throw the ball better they didn't run the the fullon option with him but I'm just saying like I think there's still a path for that I still I I refuse to believe that no one would just want to dominate college football especially in this day and age like Tommy Fraser he would be a millionaire in this day and age because Nebraska would say wait let's just keep paying this guy right well now with the nil for sure absolutely him and Corey slesinger would run this damn Town need how's cor slesinger not a senator or something but I don't know what's going on out there he's definitely a bartender but uh look right he he also he also does have to pay for a drink in Lincoln Nebraska because he slings them keny monolo is 109 83 and 15 Seasons at Navy uh three double digit win Seasons 10 winning seasons at Navy uh the OC hired was Craig stman coming over from Texas State spread and Shred Spread spread and Shred I like this DC he retained DC Derek Odin which I thought was interesting yeah suris interesting with Brennan to Arizona but uh I think maybe that was Arizona's DC remained I think if memory SS me correct but that was that's a good retaining that that happened there because their defense was pretty damn good last year uh let's jump into this action and I don't forget this program scored some big wins since the year 2000 all right I and they need to go back to that retro logo by the way youtube.com gonna say it's on the C it's on Captain canvas's um layout that's for sure as the graphic wizard uh strikes again dund day with the canva captain old school San Jose spy logo look at that let's go and look they have multiple wins over Stanford and guess what Stanford's on the schedule this year uh since the year 2000 they won at Arkansas just a couple years ago they dude they almost won at Auburn too they they kind of they had that game and let it slip away uh multiple wins against SMU they've beaten TCU Illinois BYU all at home so this program I know uh you know you think a lot of people I think the narrative is like oh they don't really care about Santa State football and maybe there's a little truth to that but I think Kenny and monolo could be the guy to really get this thing going back up again I think he's that good of a coach I think so um and you could make the case even though I'm a Brent Brennan guy I almost feel like Brent Brennan told them they should hire a Brent Brennan went to UCLA but he's also related to Colt Brenan he's he's you know dick Tomy he coached under dick Tomy uh at multiple stops well dick Tomy guess where dick Tomy coached Hawaii Arizona San Jose State uh so I almost feel like they kept it in house as far as you know the Hawaiian football culture I feel like everyone knows everybody so uh maybe that had something to do with it but I I you can make the argument that neam monela is a better football coach than Brent Brennan I like Brent Brennan so but uh anyway let's jump into this offense from a year ago because it was pretty damn good 34th in the nation in scoring offense fourth in the Mountain West 49th in yards fifth in the Mountain West 70th in passing which was seventh in the Mountain West and 31st in Rush rushing fifth in the Mountain West um going to be hard to duplicate that with such little little returning starters what's your what's your thoughts are you surprised by any of those numbers no they had a decent offense last year they said they um whatever they're may they they're what they've been known for is staple but like you said um they lost a lot on both sides of the ball so this is going to be this is going to be tough sledding I think this might this is do an overall before we get take a deep dive um I think this is definitely a rebuilding year obviously for Coach Ken there and uh you're GNA have G GNA have to throw not thr one away but you know allow allow a little grace period yeah and look the three returning starters one of these ones I clearly my computer was messing up when I uh just hit the keyboard and obviously you're seeing that Right Guard his name is really not mfix but the last name's correct the last name is correct yeah did the cat jump on the keyboard at that point or did but uh yeah I was say old muddy waters Chase Chase a rabbit or something that jumped across your keyboard I think that perhaps happened but they do return two uh receivers Nick Nash who I thought played really well last year and Malachi Miller uh Nick Nash former quarterback you know converted to wide out uh excited to see them in the offense but yes they've lost a ton of pieces so you know losing eight guys yeah three of their top four receivers are going Nash not nash being that fourth one in there well and you know how it is with with the transfer portal these days if a Coach leaves so Brett Brennan leaves and he brings four guys with quarterback Anthony Garcia yeah does that name ring a bell Anthony Garcia Tony Garcia son of Garcia yes def Garcia's sonw Conley who really was a stud last year coming over from Utah Tech now he heads to Arizona following coach Brennan uh Ryan Stewart also their one of their better offensive lineman also Fernando Carman Arkansas came in even before brandan you know came in there and uh tight end Sam Olson also goes to Arizona Dominic mazad to UMass Charles Ross who was a stud for them last year I I played the hell out of him in DFS he's now at USC and Keenan Higgins heading to Colorado State as well a lot of losses there and I believe even one other one Jake Steel coming into Boise that's in conference um yeah so I mean that's your entire that's like almost all the meat on the bone yeah I mean they you know they lost seven defensive starters and they lost uh nine uh Offensive start that's 16 start that's not good you know I mean it's it's and like you say they're key key positions um so we'll see but I was intrigued with what they did in the portal they brought in quarterback EMT Brown from Washington State and Xavier Ward from Sam Houston State H uh also a Georgia running back hey they they they've never produced great running backs right uh Floyd chalk all right the fourth Floyd shock the fourth Bulldog uh wide outs Tran hurry coming in from Weber State and they they just raided we poor poor Weber State both their uh two offensive lineman petti uh lauha and Tyler Chen and uh Tran hurry all coming into San Jose State and then they went out and got soy deerman from Alabama at the white out spot they're bringing in guys from Georgia and B all right uh also tight end Grant Norberg look Naked Gun reference here I I will play there we go Grant Norberg um that is OJ Simpson's character so they're channeling their their inner OJ will they kill it yeah I just recently watch it the other day because of George Kennedy pass but Norberg and uh because of OJ dying and uh still great I can separate the art from the artists you know what I mean I watch Naked Gun and I laugh at OJ and laugh at Norberg he's great in it even though he once stole sports memorabilia from a hotel in Las Vegas one time so just because he done that doesn't mean he you know he served the time did the crime serve the time that's true I'm more offended by number three and that that uh you know Penny stealing [ __ ] and a Nicole Smith the final insult 33 and the third like a blind man in in an orgy I was gonna have to feel my way out all right uh and that's that's what San Jose State's gonna have to do in year one way to bring it per game last year fifth best in the Mountain West they gave up 25.6 points per game and the reason why that stands out to me is I actually think they're better than their numbers because they always schedule super aggressively in the noncon to their like if anything that would be an argument that they don't care about football would be like that much would be like they're normally playing a ridiculous noncon it's not as ridiculous this year but some of the other years it's been really ridiculous uh 42nd in yards 353 point2 yards per game they were giving up second best in the Mountain West second best pass defense in the Mountain West 16th best overall they were 99th against the run though they got to get better against the Run uh that was 10th best in the Mountain West um but overall pretty pretty damn good defense and they have five returning starters uh nose guard son uh TOA is back and same with linebackers Jordan Pard and tanella latu uh in the secondary DJ Harvey the former Virginia Tech hokei and quarterback Michael danir you know is back so Five Guys back on the defensive side of the ball kicker Kyler haverson is back as well what do you make of just I mean they're going to be the stronger unit with five back compared to three but right which also isn't great I mean they lost and they're running the same scheme on defense yeah that helps they did lose seven of their nine leading tacklers that's not going to yeah help any means and let's let's talk about where they went because yeah I they go nowadays you have that you have that when a coach leaves all of a sudden everyone's calling all these Players let's get the get the [ __ ] out of there uh jerus uh I'm sorry jarus uh satel satel yes or sat it could be try another try a third option yeah SA yeah I think it is uh he's off I'm not sure we got his first name right either but let's just go with it uh he goes to Fresno State what is this b battle of the valley going to the rivals yeah what's going on there the old V the old uh vajala yeah somehow I have Justin ekan on here twice glad to see how I killed it there but just wanted to hammer that one yeah that's that's how important that loss was also Trey Smith heading out to Arizona following Brett Brenan and by uh bam parm to Washington um they did lose some key pieces there and they added a couple going out to the Flaming Libs of Liberty getting Robert Ry rahimi rahimi I think it is uh also a Texas safety Larry Turner Gooden no relation to Doc um linebacker Neri Danielson coming in from BYU and quarterback Amir wers from San Diego you think they won or lost the transfer portal in uh 2024 they lost I don't yeah they lost but but I'm intrigued they lost hell they lost they got they lost one guy twice I mean that's how bad they lost thing with the boys of State well what they brought in man you still brought in some guys from Texas Alabama and Georgia I don't think it's every year that San Jose State brings in guys from Texas Alabama and Georgia so no you're right something to consider there no I think yeah no absolutely I think it's an N effect he's going to bring in some good guy people are going to want to play for him you know he he's he's a leader of men as I said people gravitate towards him um so yeah I think it's I think it's uh the future will be good just not the immediate future sounds like you're already on the under folks uh I haven't looked at the schedule yet I haven't gone but if I'm leaning already yeah I'm going under I think we're looking at a well let's just go into it not good season new hires in the Mountain West um we talked about uh you know Bronco menal goes to New Mexico Ken neam montoo to San Jose State sha Lewis to San Diego State Jeff Cho who is a very good coach at Montana state is at Nevada coach Cho and then Jay salel takes over uh he was the DC at Wyoming he's now the head coach after Craig Bow reti tiers and then Spencer Danielson who was technically Boise State's interim head coach for four games last year but went three- one uh Pro might have went four and0 had their quarterbacks been healthy for the bowl game but um where do you put Ken neam montoo in that like in that Pantheon yeah um I wouldn't break it by numbers but he's definitely um to the Middle top for sure upper the better than good kind of that uh you know his track record speeds for itself I think it's time just wore out at Navy I mean those numbers you put out they were uh still over five years ago and then you know the service cies are some of the most patient uh institutions when it comes to coaches they'll allow you to fail there and then you know they did them dirty though like they fired him right after they like they should have won that game against Army it was like a 20 to 17 overtime game where the guy fumbles at the one yard line oh yeah and you know he beat a top 25 UCF the game before that you know that those team I think were a lot closer you go back and look at uh you know what he did those final years when they're 4- eight and stuff like that like you go back you're like okay they got a seven-point loss to Delaware Delaware is like a really good FCS three-point loss to a 10- win Air Force Team you know what I mean Sixpoint loss to a to a nine- win SMU team you know uh three-point loss to Notre Dame in Baltimore so I mean like that team was better than their record man I thought they did him a little dirty in my opinion like I thought he sure still be their head coach yeah he's a great coach San Jose State's lucky to have him that's what you want me to say but but I but I wish they were run a triple option me too uh one 1,000% there um all right let's look at this win total set at five surprised by that number that's that's a high number y plus 5,000 to to win the Mountain West Championship I mean prayer yeah what did they what I mean didn't they have five wins last year final uh no they had seven oh they're seven and five not five and seven yeah uh oh seven and six I'm sorry six and two in the conference yeah I have it right in front of me um so you you just you see that and you laugh you say you're all over the under um well I say this overall I know their schedule's difficult it lines up okay but the teams on itself's not great they do avoid Hawaii New Mexico San Diego State which is Big Utah State even so that helps they don't have any backtack road games also helpful but the ones they have they're tough yeah they're I mean it's it's going to be uh it's going to be it's going to be a test so um looking at it before we even dive into it five um I'd like the hook but I still like that's going to be a tough number to get for me to get get two for these guys I'll tell you this man and I I was a little surprised at that number too I thought it' be more like four yeah I was thinking four four and a half but they're an interesting team to me because them retaining the DC the defense was good last year it was a pretty good unit so I know they lose a ton but it's not like you're changing scheme does that give you a leg up and then uh they're kind of one of these M like each conference kind of has like one or two mystery teams and I find it so hard these days you know preview and teams five six years ago you just look at returning starters but now it's like back in the day like you would always have multiple teams like a [ __ ] ton of teams with you know double digit returning starters now because of the transfer portal you go through previewing these and there's a lot of teams like San Jose State you know what I mean so within their own conference I'm doing the Mountain West right now I you know and you go through all those teams that just hired new coaches but also some of the other teams Air Force only returns five people you know what I mean so you're just sitting there like okay uh it's it's harder to forecast in my opinion than it was six seven years ago uh diving into the schedule okay week one watch out by the way week week one what did they do to to Stanford last year they [ __ ] up Stanford last year do you remember that sack State saak state's a FCS playoff team man and if you go back and look I want to say they put it on Stanford I'm trying to quickly pull that up right now um I want to say though they they let me I got it right here as long as my computer can uh compute um compute compute yeah so last year saak State beat Stanford 23 or 30 to 23 at Stanford Stadium okay and I do love this game Fresno plays saak day too I love the regionality there that is college football but this is a dangerous if your team is not ready with your brand new coach makes me paranoid Andy Thompson keeps a good program there in sack State um are you saying this is a for sure win I'm saying it better be if you want to get anywhere near a five win total uh you better beat Sacramento State to open up the season uh it might be tougher like you said new coach new roster basically new everything um far some solidary in the schedules I mean the scheduled the systems um but I I have to I have to think they would get this win saak state in 2022 so saak State beat Stanford last year in 2022 they beat Colorado State at Colorado state by 31 wow they they went they they went 11 no they went 12- one in 22 last season regressed a little bit eight and5 but they still finished number 13 in the nation in the FCS it's a dangerous ass game uh I'll I'll lean San Jose State but not by much I would not be surprised at all sacks they won this game yeah I mean I like you make compelling argument for him they did regress a little bit last year uh Stanford as we'll get to them as they play them coming up but uh and folks if you're wondering the number on the right that is uh I power ranked these tell the folks tell the folks at home about the dunde power ranking schedules I think the the one to 12 the easiest game being Kennesaw State uh and and I like that they get Kennesaw State right after Air Force so they play a triple option Air Force then they get triple option kennell state right after um but yeah that that and I I have sax state is a tougher game than kenesa and Nevada so you have number 10 third third eest but also a little difficult little challenge so don't be surprised let's not lay a huge number that's for sure but I hope they I hope they can get this win so I'll give them the win here it's not many FCS teams where you can say they've won two straight FBS games right you know um I'll give them the win two one and0 now they head to Colorado Springs to take on Troy coun and the Falcons now I did the Air Force preview Rick bomb who who was you know affiliated with the university for a long time still there going to practices I've been doing that show with Rick for about four or five years now this is the first time he ever went on the under with Air Force and he just told me he told me off air when we got done with the episode he was like they're not there yet yeah they're not there yet I'm in practice all the time and and he's like the brand new o line and everything but Troy coun did give me a dud last year when I interviewed him he said they're going to be horrible he said with the rules changes we're going to be horrible I know that rule change was a little bit bit overblown yeah um I got Air Force winning it was that rule change was only made to make the dundes live it at the world to get them coming in hot yeah yeah but yeah of course I got Air Force One in this game that I mean it it's it's it's it is very ironical that they don't bring in the triple option here from Navy and they're going to run this spread and shred and then they're going to first big loss will be first Air Force option then they got kenesa State's option right I almost hope that Air Force to kenesa beat him and then near mon at the end year like you know what [ __ ] this let's go back to uh let's go back to we are absolutely um you got kennol winning it though no I don't I I I I like what you I like your point they'll have a week to prepare for the option with the Air Force so it won't be such a shock to the system um yeah they better win this one K State at home versus Air Force Air Force is a loss so I got at two and one though let's go yeah two- one and then they head to Martin Stadium pulman Washington uh not a chance there that's yeah two and two they got a byee uh then they're home to Nevada now this is very winnable I actually favor them to win this actually I got them three and two because I think I think their roster better than Nevadas right now I agree I think this is a winnable game I think at home off the buy this is a game you going to have to lock in on Focus up and uh because schedule gets tough after this I like the beating Nevada and then they head to Fort Collins uh to take on Jay norell and Matt mummy and Company with the the Rams all right this is a loss to me I got him back to three and three yep we went we went through the Colorado State schedule on their roster we we're high on them this year um yeah they they're not going there and winning now they're home to the wyom and cowboys they're breaking in a new head coach but they you know he's their former DC J SEL um I think it's possible it's POS possible that they can get this one I think it's very key for your over but I still I think I favor Wyoming I still because they're not radically changing the offense like San Jose State is I favor Wyoming but not by much you yeah yeah I mean it's coin toss I definitely Sun Belt you know yes theoretically on the final rankings when it didn't matter but I think they would have put a Mountain West team because that's more money so um that's what I think would have happened but um A1 athletes what's up no I like a hypothetical argument for sure so you prove I'll prove you wrong with my hypothetical playoff well well let this is like the Liberty thing though if Liberty goes undefeated this year do you think they're going to take Liberty or you think they're going to take a two- loss Mountain West champ I guarantee you the way Liberty just got whooped in that bowl game they're going to take the two Lost Mountain West champ if I had to exactly and uh Liberty will go undefeated Again by the way I think they probably will um so uh yeah anyway after the second or after the Wyoming Game so you have them winning that or losing that I have them losing to Wyoming definitely losing to Fresno yeah I got him losing to Fresno too I I I lean Wyoming too but I still think that Wyoming Game might come down to their their season right there for bowling because uh it's it's winable and and right so right now going into the second byy week remember every team's got two buys double this year um I got him with three wins you have them with three wins as well right so three and five yeah we're same then they head to corval this is take on Oregon State another new head coach they're get they do get a [ __ ] ton of new head coaches on this schedule but um Eileen beavers rezer Stadium's a great HomeField Advantage uh I'll take the beaves but it wouldn't shock me because I don't know what to expect with them their whole [ __ ] team and staff went to Michigan State um what are you doing here in corales off the Buy on a losing streak U that this going to be this is will be a surprise game for sure I don't know if I can get there as far as having him win this game um like I said I just think it's going to be a rebuilding SC but the a rebuilding season um a lot of them did move over but Oran state Washington State the the remaining two they're going to be tough there there I mean on the road I I I that that's GNA take a lot for him to get that win yeah Seth in the chat shout out to Seth goes I know I'm jumping ahead and yes I'd pencil it in as a loss but the modern history with San uh San Jose Fresno yes the the battle of the valley is more unpredictable due to that rivalry Fair yeah Fair agree agree on that one uh San Jose I think put him put it on Fresno last year but yeah I still think Fresno's in a better spot Fresno had lost a lot last year this year spot yeah they return a bunch uh Boise state is coming to San Jose California I got Boise so I still got him at three wins I got yeah this schedule's tough to be honest with the end of this schedule's tough soon as you get this second buy starts off the Fresno into the buy Oregon State's lost Boise's a loss and then we're coming around the corner here UNLV on the on November 23rd followed by Stanford face they're hosting Stanford yeah uh so they they finish a season with three home games they're going to get one of those oh they're getting Stanford I'm telling you right now they're gonna get one of those teams neam monolo because another thing is I love first year coaches to take as a dog in November yeah and to me like they I know that that's a brutal schedule all four teams you know that's a power five and three or two power fives and uh and two like what the two teams that played the Mountain West champ a year ago right so so it is a brutal schedule but I just think they'll get somebody uh he's too good of a coach I got them yeah give me the Stanford game give me the Stanford game as a win they lose I like Stanford's a win so that puts at four Stanford's a listless program right now too [ __ ] the [ __ ] is that that's a flaccid ass [ __ ] uh so that puts them at four we're on the under look if they be Wyoming 5 but the the over and and I I should say that it is Juiced a little bit towards the under it is minus 135 under five to get the six wins though is tough that's I was gon to say in order to lose your bet they have to win six and that is very ambitious with this schedule and I can see the Wyoming making five wins and uh you know possibly possibly UNLV possibly you know I don't know possibly maybe they upset Air Force with all those players but and I mean neam monolo probably does know how to defend the triple option better than most coaches right because he coached it for [ __ ] 40 years but um I I think it's a pretty decent play the that's a solid bet just because it t if you can get that number five because it takes six games to for you to lose and sax St could beat them in the opener what better time to catch a first year coach cashier ticket if that happen they open up with a loss of SE eight cash should give out cash out options uh but like I said Neo's First Year everyone left to return they they have to you know lost nine starters on offense seven or what four starters returning on defense um yeah it's going to be a tough rebuilding year but they're building a those going to build change a culture build a culture and lead some men this is not their year I think the under's a pretty decent play too so uh I like the Seth says the other thing he's going to throw out there is San Jose States 21 and six and one historically against UNLV they did whoop unlv's ass last year and they should have played in the Mountain West Championship they got completely robbed they didn't get Robb it should have been San Jose
