just type it in the live chat on Facebook X or YouTube we'll get you involved at the conclusion of Hacksaw headlines okay we're going lots of different directions let's get started with the big story because it starts in essence tonight tomorrow and then Saturday we're talking college football here we go USC UCLA Lee all right let's talk about first of all Southern California situation USC opens on Sunday USC plays Las Vegas UCLA opens late Saturday night they go play Hawaii life after Caleb Williams for that head coach it's going to be very interesting to see what Trojan football will be like with the sixth year starter in Miller Moss the kid that threw six touchdown passes in his Lone Start in the Holiday Bowl after Caleb Williams had opted out he's got a tremendous wide receiver in Zachariah Branch they think they're really deep at wide receiver with some young pups that haven't really played they got what I tend to think might be the best defensive tackle in all college footballs name is bear Alexander had to do a lot of it by himself the last year and a half now he's got transfers and people around him including a big fellow defensive tackle who came in from Wyoming they've got nine transfers on the Trojan defens as Lincoln Riley's trying to fix what has been wrong for two years in a row but this schedule holy cow John this schedule is so rugged they open with Brian Kelly and LSU then over the first four weeks of the Season not only do they play the Bayou Bengals of LSU they play Michigan and they play Wisconsin all that in the first four weeks so they're going to have to Hit the Floor running however his Playbook last year 466 yards per game on offense however his defense gave up 432 but of all the recruits he brought in maybe the most important is Danton Lynn the defensive coordinator who came from UCLA so that's the storyline with the Trojans cross town UCLA plays Hawaii in Honolulu non-conference game to start their schedule and then they move into the teeth of the schedule just like that and it's really going to be hard I'm not sure that Deshawn Foster the incoming head coach is the biggest acquisition they made maybe the biggest acquisition is Eric benemy who came from the NFL after all those years as a playall caller and a coordinator Kansas City and with the Washington commanders Eric benemy will be under the glare of the spotlight to make this thing better there is no Chip Kelly that era of error is over Ethan garbers journeyman spotted a little bit last year played competitive he's going to be the guy he's going to have to be the guy because everybody else is really young uh J Michael Stant Big Time receiver now got to catch more than 35 passes if I'm going to use the word big time I mean he's got to be a 50 to 70 reception guy but he's been in the program at 6'4 he's about ready I like their running game I think TJ Harden Keegan Jones pretty dog on good and they return a pile of guys defensively but that being said LSU Oregan Penn State three weeks in a row starting next week their season could be over so John Riley I've given you the thumbnail Scot and report on USC Trojans UCLA Bruins and it's your turn to tell me tell everybody on live stream what you like what concerns you the most about Lincoln Riley's team and Deshawn Foster's crew well I'm I'm still trying to learn all the names and faces as they get this thing together the thing that I think about the most though is about Eric be enemy because he was in the NFL working with Andy Reid then he goes to Washington he was an offens offensive coordinator everyone thought he had the ability to be the next big-time NFL coach it seems like he's taken a step down and if UCLA really performs poorly is Eric benemy going to be getting the blame and suddenly his career is down the toilet either that or or maybe somebody wakes up and says maybe we made a mistake on DeShawn Foster you know coming out of the gate Foster didn't do very well uh in his public press conferences and it was really an embarrassment at the Big 10 media day where he just couldn't answer questions and he quote froze up and he's never been a coordinator much less a head coach anywhere so there's there's a volume of questions about him however benmy has coached under the really great one in Andy Reid benmy got a lot of credit for how hard he coaches players especially young players and I think he's coached UCLA which by the way has closed a lot of its practices they not gotten a lot of preseason Pub which I think is wrong I think you need to expose a new coach and the new coordinator to the fans and the alums Etc and they've kind of locked this thing off I've counted two UCLA football stories in the LA Times in about the last 15 days I don't think that's the way to conduct business but that being said I I think B carries a lot of credibility and I don't know if they have enough players but we'll find out starting week two three and four because that's that's just vicious who they have to play out of the gate well life is good when Southern California football is good exactly and now they're going to the big 10 and they're going to probably get their butts kicked around I mean I think if USC could finish in the top three of the Big 10 that would be a huge success wait a minute they were picked to finish 15th out of 18 teams John USC oh no no UCLA yeah UCLA is definitely bottom half if USC and Lincoln Riley can finish in the top three I would say that's a great accomplishment year one he put together a jigsaw puzzle roster last year with so many transfers around Caleb Williams and they did pretty well till they had injuries and they fell apart at the end defensively he's got another box of jigsaw puzzles he's going to put around Miller Moss he knows Talent he's gotten talent to come there schedule's rugged out of the gate for them just like it is for UCL La so fascinated to see what happens now I will say this as they play LSU on the weekend on Sunday in Vegas it's not in Baton Rouge it's in Vegas LSU does not have Jaden Daniels right so LSU is going with a 6the quarterback to and a bunch of young players because a lot of Brian Kelly's good guys went to the National Football League a few of them actually drifted into the transfer portal so we're starting SC UCLA you're a Trojan fan you're a brunes fan hey we must have somebody from Los Angeles that is part of our our podcast jump on board join us in the fans form chat box give us your thoughts on right head coach at UCLA wrong head coach Lincoln Riley disappointment or success two years into the mission at Heritage Hall feel free to jump on board we go from that we talk about the team in town here at San Diego State yeah talking about a team that doesn't shy away from the media they're doing a lot to get exposure for the coach and the players I like sea Lewis now Sean Lewis house to win it's going to be tough it's going to be tough after the opening game that is what came out of his Monday press briefing he wrapped it up with the statement who are we he doesn't know hell I wrote a column that you posted on the website you were laughing so hard you almost screwed it up trying to post it of course it was a good column I authored it I I wrote a column my one man's opinion column early in the week on San Diego State you can find it on the website I wrote a column in which for the first time in my life I admitted I don't know and I know everything about everything but I don't know how good San Diego State can be at this point in time new head coach new staff new playbook and a new roster 55 total new players including I want to say 42 transfers he's got them coming from everywhere and he started an 18-year-old quarterback Danny O'Neal in his first game against division onea used to be division 2 Texas A&M Commerce which used to be East Texas state where Ward Wilson and Dwight white went to school in the NFL oh really way back in the day when they were division two okay so we don't know how good San Diego State's going to be I would think based on this offense and just a lot of reps that they're probably gonna blow out what the hell's her name East Texas State it's not West Texas State it's not North Texas State not Texas L pass the Chamber of Commerce East Texas State Chamber of Commerce they're going to blow these guys out but they they just need reps but I don't know how good they're going to be and I will tell you week two they play Oregon State week three they play Cal so we're going to get a much better read by three weeks from now but this guy this guy's resumee is like neon lights they flash what he did at Kent State which was on the floor face down in the gutter when he got there by the time he left they were averaging 600 yards per game in the Mid-American Conference throwing the ball all over the place he could duplicate that here because this is a different level this is not where he was a year ago at Colorado in in the Pack 12 where everybody's got athletes and coordinators and lots of numbers to throw at you this is the Mountain West like it was in the MidAmerican conference and you just don't have enough players defensively to match what he's got at the line of scrimmage you don't enough time to prepare for what they're going to run you know they'll try to run three snaps in 60 seconds offensively because they go no huddle and with now the headset communication he'll he'll say lemon Oregon 22 and that quarterback gets it in his headset now with the communication and you know lemon describes run versus pass mhm Oregon describes short intermediate pass or down the- field pass and 22 is some form of blocking formation that's the language that will come through daniel' Neil's headset and they they will run a lot of plays you know we had a sneak preview you and I we watched Colorado last season must see TV at the beginning of the season I mean you were floored I was exhausted how many snaps they ran with shador Sanders at quarterback well I think Shawn Lewis can trigger that but he's doing it against Mountain West Conference defenses who don't have the numbers of athletes who can run and who can catch up to you so I'm fascinated there other other question in the argument is are they Tough Enough defensively because they a lot of players are gone and Brady hul and Rocky Long's resume was we will punch you in the mouth because we have cement tough defense well a lot of those guys are gone and we don't know how good this defense is going to be but offensively wow I it's it's going to be cool to watch in game one against East Texas State Chamber of Commerce whatever the hell their name is okay your thoughts on the stic I think this is going to be really exciting I mean imagine if he turns out to be very successful it'd be another one in a long line of innovative coaches that have been here in San Diego you know Don Corel and you even talk about Steve fiser and all these other great San Diego State coaches and pro coaches um but you know it's funny as article you wrote like I I I I don't know you were like stumped and it was a great article and I shared it on Facebook in a couple of the San Diego State Aztec uh football clubs and boy they had a field day with it because all of them were kind of expressing the same thing they're all excited but they have no idea what this gonna happen so they're all kind of hopeful that it's all going to work out and then then they started talking about you you know like hacksaw oh you know some of you remembering like you as the announcer back in the 90s and that Marsh F yeah yeah so that they think of you as a signature sound other people like no not hacksaw I like you know Uncle Teddy or I like this guy or that guy so it's just fun to see that debate but you got a lot of love in that post and there were a few out there that posted see I told you that dumbass doesn't know anything now he admits he doesn't know anything only about the Aztecs hey you're a San Diego State fan friend and Alum you need to be in the fans Forum chat box I we have not had an Aztec football respondent in the chat box on fans forum in a long time so feel free to jump on we need to create a kiss my Aztec chat box I got in trouble for that I came up with that idea doing talk show radio because I was just trying to ignite some response from the fans and we decided that we'd take the 10th phone line and that would be designated the kiss my Aztec line it lit up it work but you didn't get in trouble for that but I was always awesome when you were doing that was that the ladies line too to do d double duty yeah Raider fan be a man call the ladies line okay we go from that we're not done with college football because you got some other storylines here we want to talk about yeah let's get some of these top teams like Georgia number one maybe okay this is the ranking of the top six in college football and this is really important because there's another storyline that we're going to talk about momentarily Georgia's ranked number one Kirby Smart number one in the country in recruiting Carson Beck right now probably is the lead candidate with apologies to Deion Sanders quarterback son of col I think Carson Beck is probably the lead candidate uh for Heisman Trophy now georg's got some problems off the field wide receivers running back injuries players in trouble who've been suspended but Georgia is number one Ohio State Ryan day he's there brand new quarterback brand new offensive coordinator and Ryan day's really struggled to beat Michigan and there's there's a weird feel out there from Ohio State fans that I interact with that if this is not a championship season they got a head coach in Waiting Chip Kelly ah I don't want Chip Kelly to be a head coach again what he did to use CLA what he's done ever since he left Oregon doesn't qualify him to be a head coach any longer anywhere Chip Kelly is the offensive coordinator do have a new quarterback will Howard transfer Kansas State wrote every passing record at K State through 48 touchdowns in the last two years and they got trivan Henderson who I think is one of the best big running backs in college football so Ohio state is number two Oregon number three Dan Lanning lost a lot of players including B Knicks lost his running backs lost his wide receivers but they just replenish because they are one of the great Recruiters on the west coast he gets a sixthe transfer quarterback Dylan Gabriel comes in played at Central Florida transferred to Oklahoma and now is at Oregon he's thrown for all almost 14,900 yards in his career and 125 touchdowns he's a really good left-handed quarterback so Oregon you got to pay attention Texas this to me is one of the strangest fits of all time and it's really worked Steve sarisan who was from out here played at BYU head coach here in the Pack 12 was at the University of Washington got fired had alcohol issues went into rehab he was a man on the street kind of resus ated his career by going to Alabama to work for Nick sabbin Steve sarkeesian is the head coach at Texas and he's had really good success and he has just recruited the Daylights out of the Midlands the west coast and obviously the lonar state he's got two quarterbacks he's put them back on the map and by the way their mail is now being sent to the Southeastern Conference so Texas is that is going to be worth watching not just what he's done but what they're going to do where the programs landed Alabama is sitting there they are ranked five what will life be like after Nick Sabin pretty good coach a lot of surprise higher that he left the day after the season ended at Washington kayin debor takes over at Alabama has not missed a beat and he's got a quarterback that nobody's talking about that should be talking about because he played well at the end of last season Jaylen milroe over 3,300 allpurpose yards and he's a Heisman Trophy candidate probably in the same sentence with George's quarterback Carson Beck so bam is going to be good and the wild card in the whole thing connect the dots on all this ol Miss ol Miss coached by the guy that USC and the Raiders fired Lane kein Miss dominant recruiting Old Miss hauling in guys in the transfer portal all the time he's got a fourthe starting quarterback who's a former Trojan Jackson Dart he had almost four ,000 all purer yards last season had a good season last year faltered at the end didn't get there in the SEC Championship game but all these guys are back and all these newcomers from the portal are back and how's this for a rumor this going to be the final fall for lane kein at all Miss now there's no Pack 12 for him to go back to rumor is he'll cross the state line if he has a banner season and he'll go to the NFL he'll go to the New Orleans Saints who have a coach that's on the hot box hot seat and the Saints have not done well so there's all kinds of story lines down there uh in that Old Miss so we'll keep an eye on that so John those are the top six anybody else would have to be a surprise to put themselves in the upper R Shalon and and the one common denominator they all got hired guns at quarterback your turn my turn well it's nice to see Old Miss in that list you know it just that was the surprise old Lane kein and Lane kein gets a lot of crap from fans you know because he's had a checkered past but he still seems to always get a break you know he's always he gets the benefit of the doubt lands on his feet he land that's a good way to put it he lands on his feet like a cat with nine lives um but I just remember when he was the head coach of the Raiders he was like in his early 30s he was probably younger than a lot of the players then exactly you know but then I I look at these other teams you know Alabama's gonna be Alabama the oran quarterback um Dylan Gabriel I watched a lot of his play because my son finished up his college at Oklahoma and so we went to the games and Gabriel took over when Caleb Williams went to USC he's a good quarterback he can throw he reminds you of Steve Young as a lefty and he's a little bit stocky he's not a tall guy he's maybe only 51 six foot but I think Oregon should really like him and they recruit and they get all these transfers they got they they put so many skilled people around Bo Knicks last year and Bo Knicks made all the plays Gabriel has grown into it initially when he was at Central Florida he was a a Gunner and wild arm and through picks in Oklahoma they refined his game so he's got one year left and he's going to be with the Oregon Ducks so those are the Marquee teams if you got a comment about Heisman Trophy candidates life after Nick sabbin in bama Feel Free Jump into the fans Forum looking for college football fans to participate game day baby I mean we got a few games this evening we got obviously a flurry of Friday night games and then everybody's playing on Saturday let's just go conference by conference for a minute and just talk about some of the storylines SEC lost in all the conversation this year about all the expansion and how everybody went to the Big 10 and who the Big 12 picked up and the lawsuits in the Atlantic Coast Conference nobody's talking about the SEC nobody's talking about Texas and Oklahoma showing up and they are not going to knock on the door they're going to kick the damn door down I mean I think the whole scope of of SEC football is going to change because here come the Sooners and here come the Longhorns and they bring tradition and they recruit really well and obviously things have changed a little bit in the Southeastern Conference so pay attention to that big 10 story lines well Southern K and UCLA and Oregon and Washington awful lot of travel I think Oregon's going to do really well I'm just not so sure that USC is going to be dominant even though I think Lincoln Riley is a great coach and a great recruiter I think it's going to be a really hard season at UCLA and it's a massive rebuild season I think at the University of Washington the post U Michael penck era Big 12 yeah they got Oklahoma State and they got Iowa State and those are two pretty good programs I tell you what everybody that I network with who is covers college football that's their main job of the opinion Utah's going to show up and Utah is going to win that conference really Utah and you say you kidding me Salt Lake City those guys used to be in the Mountain West or the old white those guys well those guys did pretty well in the Pack 12 real well and did well on the national stage and in bowl games I don't know that Arizona State's got enough players Arizona's gone through now total change over they hired the San Jose State coach after their coach Jed fish went to the University Washington so Arizona's got changes and Colorado I'm I'm I don't know what to expect expect right now yes they have shador Sanders yes they back the truck up with the next group of guys from the transfer portal but I just wonder if all the firefighting going on between Dion Sanders local media National media and all the junk off the field with court cases is going to wind up being a big distraction Colorado goes into the Big 12 and I'll tell you because it happened last year and I projected a year ago this week it was going to happen and the Pack 12 teams are going to run up scores on him because they were pissed about what he did to all those players in the portal and I think the Big 12 coaches are going to do the exact same thing to Deion Sanders and he's not going to get benefit of Doubt from anybody in the media because he's dumped and pissed off all the media in Boulder in Denver announc become a true National story so I think Dion's got trouble in the Big 12 Atlanta Coast Conference they're not on anybody's radar and it's because Florida State and Clemson are trying to sue to get out of the conference they're trying to end what was a 20-year television deal that they agreed to because quote they're not getting enough money well flutter State ought to be concerned about the seminal on the on the football field because they got bashed by Georgia Tech in the first game played in in Ireland that's right last weekend yes so the you know there's a lot of infighting going on there and the other story is the college football playoffs and this is going to be interesting to watch you know they're going to 12 teams this year Riley and we're going to be arguing about that I'm sure all fall along great you're hard to get along with uh four Conference champions from the from the power four all qualify the fifth qualifier will be the best from the group of five that could be somebody from the Mountain West if they're highly ranked like a Boise State could be somebody from the MidAmerican conference maybe a Toledo or a Miami somebody from the group of five will get one team in so that means there'll be seven atlarge teams and everybody of the opinion is that Liberty of Virginia or Coastal Carolina guys that win 13-0 they're all going to get screwed because what what the committee is going to do because the committee has their own poll the committee will take the next seven highest rated teams from all the Big East right of course we might have half the Southeastern Conference in the tournament or a whole bunch from the Big 10 maybe an odd one or two uh from the ACC or the Big 12 so at the end of the day 12 teams seems exciting but is it exciting if half the 12 are from one conference and that could really happen so even if San Diego State were to go 11 and one or Coastal Carolina or Liberty be unbeaten I don't think these guys are going to get a chance to be an additional team from the group of five on the college plays so John conference road map where's your Ren MCN pull pull it out you got some opinions here about what I just said or the opinions about college football playoffs and who's going to get in and who's going to get short-ended yeah these are great storylines Lee and I I love the expanded college football playoff you know if it were up to me it would be more than 12 it' be 16 maybe even 32 I and and do it through the whole month of December you could use the Peach Bowl and the weed whacker bowl and all these other ones to be the quarterfinalist that would be that would work but you know the the group of five schools keep getting screwed over they make 12 spots open they'll be lucky to get one you know there's no way they're going to get one of the at llarge bids it's just like March Madness um going through the list here listening to you talk about you know coach Prime in Colorado is there like a NATO of sports journalists you know you attack one you therefore you attack us all you know because you're really kind of getting a little irritated with Coach Prime I'm tired of the act and and you know I'll give you an example he started this two weeks ago this firefight of criticism when he refused to answer questions from a reporter from a CBS affiliate because he's publicly feuding with CBS National about their reports about his kids being in trouble his sons being in trouble so he took it out on the CBS guy so the columnist immediately said that's unfair then he then he went after the columnist from the Boulder Daily Camera which is the hometown paper and that guy wrote a very critical column about just the way on is conducting his business and then lead columnist Denver Post who's been a constant critic of of Dion since the first transfer portal meeting that he had where he told everybody here's the transfer portal address get yourself in it he was running people out of there at his first press conference so then he stood up last week and said I am not taking any questions from you nobody in this program is going to talk to you and it's a lead columnist at The Denver Post then there was all kinds of National reaction from the national media and then there was a rumbling last week that all the media was going to boycott and not cover the team and not cover practices nor press conferences now they didn't follow through on that but there's just been a reaction that we got a right to do our job and Sean Keeler The Denver Post followed up after Dion made a big issue of I'm not taking any questions from you and no players are talking to you you can stand at practice by yourself you're a non- entity as far as we concerned and then Sean Keeler followed up with a column that's great so now got a 4-8 coach with a three and9 press conference of the way he's acted and he called him deposition Dion and he talked about his sons being in trouble with the law and it goes on and on and on and what did I tell you a week ago based on my experience as a talk show host who covers the stories with the information I have and I have a right to ask tough questions you don't get involved in a fight with a member of the media because a member of the media has got a right to do his job and that includes supporting you when you're sitting there at 8 And1 and critiquing and criticizing you when you're one in8 and we have a right to ask tough questions and you get in a fight with the media John Riley the media has the last bullet in the gun the columnist yeah the beat writer the editorial people talk show radio TV sports anchors what do you gain by inciting this war with a working media who's just trying to do its job that's where we are right now and that's that's why I have my public stance about Deion Sanders and I think Shan Keeler the last sentence he wrote in a column I think this past Sunday was when you don't win this year comma and you're not going to win this year you're going to get your ass fired and we're going to be there to cover that too okay so John Riley go ahead you tell me whether we're doing our job correctly or whether he's go right or wrong go ahead yeah the media always gets the final bullet I mean that's like such a hacksaw thing to say and it's great you're right but you're right you're right you know they're gonna get the last shot in I like coach Prime I agree he's not really conducting himself the way I like to see it but in general I like his Vibe I follow his Twitter account and it's fantastic the other comment want to make on these other teams is you know when when it was a power five thing with a Pack 12 they were still not really a a power five they were like a power four and a half or something you know they weren't taken as seriously except for the occasional Oregon SC that was really good for me I'm G to be rooting for all those Pack 12 teams that are going to the big 10 going to the big 12 to go out there and like stick it to these Midwest and East Coast journalists with the last bullet you know so I think it'll be ex now imagine this this just to kind of kind of brainstorm a bit we already know Oregon's going to be really good you know there's they're they're number three ranked they probably number two in the Big 10 they could win it imagine if Oregon got number one in the Big 10 and USC number two in the Big 10 that would be something well exactly but then if they're number two talking Trojans they deserve to be an at llarge team of course no if if you're good look how what Washington developed under Michael penck last nobody saw that coming so I I think the playoffs are going to be exciting to watch as or the season will be exciting to watch to see who elevates themselves to be in this playoff mix but the little guy he's really going to get short changed and then again there's also a undercurrent of feeling oh the top guy in a group of five you really think Boise state is going to be on the same par with Texas and hey you remember the the boisey state Oklahoma G game the Statue of Liberty the hook and ladder that was fantastic that was once in a lifetime we got to see it again yeah but you also remember a year ago when you were sales pitching me TCU and Max Dugen and all those guys and what they get beat 62 to7 in the playoffs yeah but they're a power Conference Team you know so you know I just like want to open it up give these other programs a chance okay fans forum is open if you are a Colorado fan friend and Alum if you like neon Dion and Coach Prime jump on board get in this discussion if you're just a college football fan do you like the 12 team playoffs is it too much or are you inviting too many 50 to7 blowouts or enough good college programs that could make the playoffs really special and of course the sidebar is how some of this impacts week one of the college football season just type it in the live chat Facebook YouTube or Twitter fans Forum coming up in just a couple of minutes now let's talk NFL football John because we are a week away from the start of the Season we are and I'll tell you what Lee you are a prognosticator on this first one okay wheeling and dealing you know roster trades free agent signings from other teams guys placed on injured reserve let's just screw through this laundry list here on the board the Chargers I said that they were going to need another quarterback they went and got another quarterback it was the quarterback I talked about last week they signed or they actually traded for Taylor heiki who came from the Atlanta Falcons this guy was a former starter for a brief time with Carolina he was a starter for the Washington commanders 12- 11 as a starting quarterback 39 touchdowns 28 interceptions as a back up to Justin Herbert I think he's really reliable the thing that's unique is what happened in the last 48 hours the new general manager of the Chargers Joe hortiz he's made more deals in 48 hours than the former general manager Tom Tesco Maiden his nine years he traded for I think a potential starting quarterback in molden he came from the Tennessee Titans they just made a deal to get Hassan Hawkins a former running back at Michigan who played for Jim Harbaugh unbelievable special teams Gunner and averaged almost 22 yards per kick return so those guys are coming in the front door they made some decisions on name players not to keep they cut the big 68 tight end Donald Parham he wound up signing almost immediately going to another team he was JT Woods's safety who they talked about a lot as flipping to a cornerback he got cut Isaiah Spiller former fourth round draft pick he got cut now he just got resigned and put back on the developmental Squad and Luis Perez the quarterback who done really well in Spring football a couple these different leagues Luis Perez he also got cut but the acquisition of hinei that to me is a really good insurance policy for the Chargers so we go from that to Kansas City and Kansas City really active uh at roster cutdown time they gave up on cadarius Tony the guy that made all the mistakes last year dropped passes lining up offs side always seemed to have an explanation or an excuse he just never grew as a wide receiver they cut Tony he's still unemployed at this hour they turned around and they went and got a backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes they got bayy zappy who had just been cut from New England he had started a bunch of games in The postt Brady era they signed him almost immediately when went on the waiver driver and they also picked up Sammy perin who's a really good and accomplished third down pass catching running back he had been with the Denver Broncos Denver wanted to bring him back put him on developmental he said no Broncos this is a really good acquisition uh they wound up getting Parham at tight end that's a big pass catching tight end who's going to catch some balls I think in Shawn Payton's offense one of the surprises is they cut Tim Patrick he had a really good preseason big six with four wide receivers had two years of injuries it's the first time in two years he was healthy he caught a bunch of balls in exhibition games he W up getting cut Dallas Cowboys now they did sign CD lamb we had talked about that they've yet to sign Dak Prescot I'm sure somewhere down the road that deal is going to get done but this I think is an impressive deal they went out and they signed ex- Minnesota Viking running back dvin cook he's got over 6,000 yards rushing 43 touchdowns he was kind of a cap casualty year ago in Minnesota had just a brief cup of coffee but it was really late in the season with the Jets didn't get resigned this guy can play and this guy will run it this guy will catch it this is a pretty good acquisition and then the Rams I wish I had an explanation as to why they did this but they're already without Aaron Donald who retired um the greatest modern day defensive tackle in the NFL now they cut the guy that lined up behind him their strong inside linebacker Ernest Jones who wanted a contract extension had a year left they cut him and actually they wound up trading him to Tennessee for a late round draft pick this guy had 145 tackles last season and that I know they've got a bunch of young linebackers who run they're going to have a very very young defense for Shawn McVey this year but Ernest Jones owed him one year on the contract and even though he wanted an extension they said no need you to play the season out he had 145 tackles he was everywhere and they traded him to the Tennessee Titans which means they're goingon to be really really young on the defensive side of the football and I was just shocked I was shocked that they hit the eject button on him and they didn't get very much for him which do make a bit of sense to me so the he was was asking money they didn't want to do it at this point in time he wasn't a distraction the guy was a football player was a gamer so John Riley's a lot of lot of news and notes Here starting with the Taylor haniki story with the Chargers finishing with the Ernest Jones trade uh with the LA Rams go ahead take the football run with it well the hinei thing was funny because like last night I texted you and it took me like two or three tries to get hinei into my cell phone because I kept trying to autocorrect it to hinin like the beer yeah and then you get it hinei and you right back know what I know you know so there you go hacksaw um I you know this NFL cut day has got to be so hard for the players and the coaches and when Parham gets cut and then he immediately gets picked up by the Broncos I'm not so much dish dissing on the Chargers there but it's just good for parm that you know he's gonna find a spot because for that with that coach sea pyton yeah exactly I mean it's a great opportunity but let's talk about Payton why did he keep all three quarterbacks that's that's a huge question there's a salary cap issue I mean they are stuck with they're they either if they cut Zach Wilson they have to pay Zach Wilson as he goes out the door if they cut stum who they gave a multi-year contract extension to which boggled my mind before the draft they're going to have to eat that contract too so maybe you keep all three now you're going keep all three on the active roster that's really surprising to me now maybe somebody gets hurt you know or maybe Nicks gets overwhelmed so you do have Zack Wilson who played well in preseason and you still have stum who seems like a smart guy who can manage games so it's strange there are a couple of other teams that are keeping three quarterbacks which is not the norm this might might have something to do with salary cap this might be some insurance policy in case Nicks can't handle what Nick is going to have to handle as a starter opening day fascinating to see the way he's doing business yeah that's kind of what I thought it was like just in case Nicks wasn't as good as we thought but the team it's a 53 man roster right plus 16 on developmental plus 16 on developmental but isn't there also the plus one for the third quarter back no that rule got taken away Players Association raised hell last week and the third active guy that's not going to be there ah okay sry right things change yeah which is kind of weird to me because of the injury Factor but in the union I think the union looked at it very differently with the opinion you can't jerk the third guy around because the third guy is on developmental makes minimum he's not on an NFL type contract and if he if he has to be called up then he gets a one-time payday that he'll get a game check ah okay I got you so it's a money thing it's a I think it's a money thing but at the end of the day three quarterbacks in a new tight end and I think Shawn Payton's had himself a really good preseason training camp with all his running backs are healthy all the wide receivers are healthy which kind of surprised me that they let Tim Patrick go because he was one of the veterans that had finally gotten healthy after back-to-back years of major injures I think I think Denver is going to be fun to to watch and what do you think about this running back going to the Dallas Cowboys I mean that guy's you talk about dvin cook he's got a track record yeah he does but then zika Elliott's still there too right yeah but he doesn't have a lot of gas left in the tank at least I don't think he does right so I mean the fact they got cook is good for them but remember Cook was on the Vikings and then didn't he switched to another team to the Jets the Jets got there late never really got to play Jets season was unraveling because of the Aaron Rogers injury they never brought him back I I think he's gonna be a surprise contributor to the Cowboys because I I he was a cap casualty because he was making monster money in Minnesota and didn't want to give money back and he got cut guy can still play good well good players deserve the play okay we go from that next topic on the table even though it was the opening of the NFL season in pen race baseball yeah and and we're this is shaping up to be a great September Le for the Padres the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks my whole life I always thought the worst place in the world for a pitcher was Coors Field Colorado thin air home run Dimensions ball flies I think I changed that this week I saw Dylan CE suffer 106 degree heat index and he went out there and he threw I want to say 70 plus pitches in three Innings and they finally had to go drag them off the mound in the fifth St Louis might be the worst place for a pitcher to pitch in the summer heat and humidity yeah I mean and this this four game series have had it's just been really hard on Padre pitching I mean they took the field today the heat index was 97 and you saw Musgrove struggle with it last night now the Padres have won some games and then lost some games so I think St Louis might be the worst place on the planet to pitch and the Padres are losing again to the Cardinals and the heat and humidity today however that being said Padres are hanging in this playoff Chase they have so many different ways to beat you you know we talked the other on Monday's program of the fact that they don't strike out they don't kill a lot of rallies with strikeouts they put the ball in play I mean you just look at the batting order that's how they have all these come from behind victories and all these eighth and ninth inning home run rallies they just got guys that put the ball in play and I I swear to you Lis arise has to be the best bad ball hitter in modern day baseball ever seen he hits stuff off his shoe tops not just home runs but he's spraying it all over the place and he God there's not there's not a pitch that he doesn't want to swing at including all the junk that's out of the strike zone and he's still hitting over 300 but balls in play bats on balls no strikeouts best bull p in baseball the best Bunch the bench Bunch now gets an addition with elas Diaz who comes from Colorado as a free agent he'll be put on the active roster as The rosters get expanded to 28 players on on September 1st and he can hit some home runs and the fact that campusano has has really had some bad stretches offensively and is struggling a little bit defensively with pass balls blocking the plate and all that he's going to go back to El because he has options available so I just I just like this and the fact the padr have done all this with nothing from you darish limited contribution from Musgrove and with tatis having been gone for such an extended period I'm just so impressed with just the composite of what Padre baseball is and in terms of the Dodgers I hold my breath on a night by Night basis I just don't know who they're going to trust in this rotation over the final four weeks of the season and then when we get to postseason now Yash Yamamoto last night threw one in in rehab game Oak City gave up one run one hit two strikeouts he was clocked at 95 I think he threw 31 strikes out of 45 pitches so he that at least that first good outing was really solid so you got Jack flare you got the kid Gavin Stone I don't know that you can trust TR berer I don't know from start to start what you're getting with Kershaw and we just have to wait over the final four weeks of the season to Wi Yamamoto gets here how good they're going to be but I just can't trust Dodger pitching as they go to postseason at this time so John left-hand demands did you talk about the Padres right-and demands your opinion on the Dodgers go ahead well first of all how about that Sho Otani first pitch with the dog that was pretty cool so Co and you're a dog guy so you love you must all that that was there's so much joy watching Otani play the game and how he acts then how he reacts and in the thing of last night with the fans I don't how do you send him out on X to go find the video if they've not seen otani's dog with a first pitch uh before the Dodger game last night it was that's one of the coolest things I've ever seen and the dog gave a high five at the end which was fantastic you know so last night the Padre's lost in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off by Aron which was disappointing but you loved higgy's home run in the eighth to bring him back like you say they can win in so many different ways um but how yeah arise was hit he had that base hit off his shoe top and just sort of flicked it over the third baseman and that was after that pitcher was thrown like 102 and so that was an amazing piece of heading th this you know you're talking about like all these other Dodger players are getting all their pitchers back still a lot of question marks but the pades are going to get back Darvish and tatis I mean two Allstars potentially two Hall of Famers I mean this September is going to be Bonkers I mean it's going to be really fun not just as a padre or Dodger fan but just as a baseball fan I was thinking about aise you know San Diego's got three area codes right the original 619 then the 760 now the 858 arise will swing at any pitcher any pitch in any of those three area codes and get a base hit he's just amazing yeah like I always think remember Vladimir Guerrero was good at that too but arise it's a magical wand that he uses up there it's different than gwy but it's just it's Artistry and that's you have to appreciate at that level but there's still a lot of Padre fans especially on Twitter that are bagging on a rise they're like he doesn't walk enough he doesn't hit for power his Ops is too low but still you know he puts the ball in play and that's how they're winning sideline to sideline there you go foul line to foul line yeah regardless of the area code the ball's in he's gonna go chase it he's it is a sprinkler it's really amazing okay Padre Dodger fans join us fans Forum chat box is open want you to be part of this big story not here in the states there's a big story that is developing John abroad in Japan this involves free agency his name is rooki Sasaki he's 22 years of age he's the next pitching Phenom to come out of Japan the union that represents players in the nipon league is negotiating with owners and they want a total change in the operation of baseball free agency if you're in Japan if your name was hon Nomo or di Matsu zaka you had to be in that League nine years before you become a true International free agent then you could sign now they're trying to change the nine-year rule for veteran free agents to match baseball MLB six-year free agency pitcher could leave player could leave after six years to start them if you're a high school and college player you could file for the baseball free agency here without going into the nipon league but you could only be signed like you were a high school draft pick or a college pick which meant you'd get a much lower salary much slower signing base the only other way a Japanese star can leave early is through the quote posting fee the way Japan worked it out with Major League Baseball that a guy could come here as a fourth or fifth or sixth year player in Japan you'd have to post a fee to get them but you would have to pay the team that lost them a huge amount of money based on the amount you paid that fourth fifth or sixth year free agent Japan wants that changed Yamamoto came after four great years in Japan to the Dodgers Dodgers are paying pay paid $31 million as a posting fee to the team that lost Yamamoto Japanese union says that's not fair to these guys you're limiting all these guys you're limiting them as a nine-year free agent you're limiting them as a 18-year-old High School star who wants to come play here and the posting fee for a Yamamoto star is unfair to the player so I don't know if there's going to be a player strike something is going to change as it relates to Japanese and Roki Sasaki is going to be the Jim Catfish Hunter of Japanese ball he's the one that they're going to hang the Hat on because catfish through all the lawsuits became a free agent with the Okland Athletics this is going to happen in Japan and this window to get more Japanese players here it's probably going to open up be very different once they get this deal done with the Union Union's raising a big issue in Sasaki is going to be the poster boy this is good you know let's open up the market free free up the market it sounds like right now it's like a trade war with tariffs and everything just the baseball version of it um so I I like this but imagine put the shoe on the other foot so imagine an American Soccer Star like Christian psic imagine if we prevented him from going to play for Bayern Munich or going out to play for Chelsea or wherever he played in Europe I mean that would be horribly unfair to pulisic and it would would be a bad look for the United States usually if if we have American soccer players go to Europe I encourage them and root for them and hope they're successful rather than trying to hoard him and keep them back home yeah icho Suzuki maybe the greatest modern-day Japanese player before otani's arrival yeah now he came here on a posting fee deal now Otani came here as a young player but he had to come here as a young player and play Under The International rules that baseball had for draft picks you know he signed a very affordable contract and he chose the Angels Sasaki wants the chance to come here but he doesn't want to be held up by posting limitations he doesn't want to stay there till nine years the new rule maybe the free agency comes after a sixth year but it's very it's a very complicated thing because there's three different layers now how you get players out of Japan well if you have to wait nine years your arm might be shot exactly and then you don't have a chance to make the big money in America so that's where we are there this this story is something we're going to have to track going into the off season to see how quickly it changes last topic on the table the ocanada network followers who want to join us for this hockey hotline here we go hockey hotline we had to kiss my ass techline here we go uh let's talk about the Vancouver Canucks you know their top goenda Thatcher Demco got hurt in the playoffs last year never came back on the ice thatr Demco has evidently got more complications post knee surgery is not going to come be ready for training camp he of course is a from scripts Ranch here in San Diego cool not for him he can't play so he's not going to be ready for the start of the season now Vancouver gets another setback the guy that replaced Demco and kind of carried the Canucks on his shoulders he's got knee problems he's in Lavia and he's might not be ready for the start of the season with the Canucks so now Vancouver does not have goal tender number one they're great veteran Stars making a lot of money thater Demco and may not have Arthur soffs who was the talk of the NHL playoffs last year so Vancouver's in scramble mode to go get another player hockey Toronto this story has just drifted All Summer Long Maple Leafs have massive salary cap problems Mitch mner is in their his final year one final year $10 million report as of this afternoon the Maple Leafs are talking about trading Mitch marter to the Pittsburgh Penguins led by Sydney Crosby and it they' probably take take on big draft picks lots of picks give up $10 million cap space and Marner would go to be on the first line with the Pittsburgh Penguins that's a fascinating story and the third story this really bothers me Chase Deo the captain of the San Diego goals has not been offered a contract by the Ducks he's evidently going to Russia he's going to sign in the KHL and this this guy never got much of a chance to play in the NHL but this guy's been a vested veteran 125 career goals in the American League and he's he's the leader of the San Diego goals I'm disappointed a because he's a good guy and a good player and he's been trustworthy as a leader I'm disappointed cuz the the ducks have not brought back any of the five top veteran players to the AHL team and they've not had a lot of success here in the last two to three years with GS hockey and now you're letting your captain go and he's going to Russia to play that's really disappointing and I just asked the question what is the blueprint I understand the rebuild that's going on in Anaheim with pad verbi and I know it's painful and takes time and they've got a lot of young players and they're Force feeding them all but this franchise is taking a terrible hit because none of the high draft picks that we thought were going to get here came here they wound up going to Anaheim and they wound up losing and losing and continue to lose and they've not signed anybody I me the Ducks are sitting here like 21 million beneath the salary cap they got 21 million in free agent money and they haven't brought anybody in and they haven't brought any veterans in to help the San Diego gos so I'd hate to see this be a third straight really substandard season here in San Diego but here's the example of Chase Deo is going to leave to go to Russia because the Ducks haven't offered one of the vested veteran players a contract to staya I don't understand anything but you want to talk Vancouver you want to talk about the May and Mitch mner going to Pittsburgh feel free well the Ducks thing as I remember you you were talking a lot about how they had those veterans with the GS that were like a triaa team and they can bring them up and they never did and I think yeah we were hoping the GS would be a decent team in the AHL and the Ducks would have a bright future so you're right I don't understand the blueprint but that guy going to play in Russia I mean that's not a good choice these days I mean Britney grinder got stuck in Russia you know you you don't know how that's going to unfold I mean that's like a desperate career move I worry about that guy you know well except that there's a lot of NHL veteran players and even AHL veterans that have taken contracts to go play in the KHL really it's it's very strange I I I concur with you wholeheartedly based on what's happened Russia Ukraine the war Putin and all that and the whole Britany GR or mistake but there's a bunch of guys that have played in the NHL that might be veterans at the at the end of their career or AHL veterans who've taken the paydays and have gone to play and I asked that question of somebody else in hockey and they said now those guys are treated like royalty over there really as long as they stay out of the the political venue yeah and then make sure you don't have any like recreational marijuana on you exactly which is I think what took grinder down uh the other comment I want to make is is that the Canucks um I love their logo I mean that whole artistic style that you see like with the Seahawks you know and it's that whole Northwestern America my my family we were in Vancouver a number of years ago had a great time really in a vibrant City oh great City and had a lot of San Francisco Vibes I remember while we were there but we were traveling through this park that's on the end of a peninsula on the city and they had these big totem poles that had that same style of artwork and you know that we also saw in Alaska so that whole vibe is kind of cool so good for Vancouver to have like a legit number one pro sports team because they lost the Grizzlies I like to see Vancouver have some something to love and not have either one of their goenda we're just weeks away from the start of training camp and there is no Thatcher Demco and now the story that broke at noon today about arur silvos who just saved him last season and back stopped them deep into the playoffs and now he's got a KN injury and he's back in laa and they don't think you'll be ready for the start of the Season either that's that's not good news so hockey hotline is open if you want to get involved our podcast is brought to you by Dixie Line Lumber and Home Centers there are nine locations to serve you in San Diego you got projects these are the people to do business worth just remember the name Dixie Line Lumber we are ready we are set it's time to go here comes the other popular segment of the show it's called fans Forum John this segment Belongs to You belongs to me well let's kick it off with Callen Callen always joins us just about every podcast afternoon jent Lee thoughts on the duck shifting from B to Victory plus alongside the Dallas Stars I'm eager to see how this works but thankfully it'll be free of charge in the San Diego Market well it'll be free uh up in LA and Orange County uh you know they they were all victimized I think there's 12 NHL teams that were hurt by The Diamond Sports bankruptcy and the whole ballet Sports Shenanigans uh and the ducks have decided to go but they're going to be on kcop Regional games I would assume that' be all the West Coast Rocky Mountain games will be on on free TV and then Victory Sports you'll be able to access it there uh I guess via streaming I'm not big on streaming John Riley does stream he subscribes to everything plus but not Victory I've never even heard of that one well that just that story just broke yesterday so Ducks fans will get a chance here to see their their games on free TV which will be cool and then obviously Victory Plus and I'll let you figure out how that works and you can explain it to me as I come over to have a beer watching some hockey well I remember it was uh Fox Sports San Diego that would oftentimes have Clippers games and then Ducks games and then it be ballet Sports yeah then it went to balet exactly so okay so this is the same kind of vibe so yeah it'd be great be able to catch those games on TV on we go next thing thanks Callum for being with us all right let's go to Greg H Greg says Lee what would your Mount Rushmore be for Chargers quarterbacks great show and bum there's no Dixie Li Lumber up here in Seattle we miss you up here by the way uh Greg I would have to say the the Mount Rushmore Charger quarterbacks has to start with Fouts and then it has to contain Philip Rivers and then I would I would tend to think back in the day and I remember the old AFL Chargers the John hadle Jack Kemp Chargers although Kemp had more success I guess in Buffalo with the AFL bills I would say those would be the the Mount Rushmore guys I don't know whether we put our Super Bowl quarterback oh you got it yeah what did led him to the Super Bowl I don't know I don't know if we one of the four well then you know but then you got Justin Herbert who's right there on the brink of greatness though it may be too early to put him up on on Mount Rushmore but yeah I would say Stan humph has to be part of that equation yeah I I think he hit all the big names but you know Justin Herbert is kind of in the on Deck Circle he might displace one of them but think about like like the opposite of amount Rushmore and all the quarterbacks that we've had here in San Diego Mark vasic you know and and Craig wheelahan and uh I mean you probably can name a bunch of them off the top of your head there were a whole pile of them back in the day when they didn't really have quarterbacks the Sha salsburys of the world and those guys but that let's not be negative here the the question was a a real legitimate positive about great quarterbacks for the San Diego CH no Ryan Leaf you gotta put Leaf up there he's on the back side of the mountain to quote to quote Dion Sanders why you being negative man right there you go okay okay you're right that's a good call next one all right just a quick ear from EXs Revolution bonjour do Canada Oh Canada oh hockey hotline fans are going crazy camps are opening in two weeks hockey fans are just beside themselves it's gonna be awesome man you the season getting started here's a long one here from David says hey um hey hacksaw nice to see your show I'm a longtime fan from Rancher Bernardo as the paralympic games begin what do you think of a show or segment weekly or daily with updates in the community of athletes in the disabled Community can include information about local programs including adaptive Sports programs the miracle leagues Asus for autism info on adaptive sporting equipment development Etc have a great three-day weekend coming up the paral Olympics are great you have to access peacock to watch the par Olympics Olympics I watched The Opening Ceremonies that was really cool in the stadium as they brought all the athletes some of them obviously wheelchair bound in with the American flag I mean it's just really neat now it doesn't get obviously the coverage uh that the normal Olympics got in Paris just you know a couple weeks ago but there there's a time and place to cover it it's really hard to cover it I I I've tried to search out access but we don't know the athletes that's I mean they're not household names it's not it's not the Michael phelps's and of the world so it's it's just really hard to cover it but they have their place and they they do have their recognition well you know it's interesting um for a couple of angles here because you do a great job hacksaw headlines covering the World of Sports which is a ton of information and yeah Paro Olympics might not be at the top of the list but the beauty of podcasting is such that you could right here David laid out a whole program here on how to dup the par Olympic podcast the beauty of podcasting is that you can identify a niche audience a target small audience and provide content that they're hungry for so maybe David should start a podcast talking about that because he probably knows a lot of the names and faces and there would be a huge loyal narrow but loyal audience for that I concur you know somebody wrote me a week ago and said how come you guys haven't done anything about the Little League World Series well there's only so much time in the in the day for me to cover certain things and I and he was barking at me how come you didn't do anything on TV on your sportscast on KUSI at at which point my response was who am I going to bump off from a Content standpoint Little League World Series is special what ESPN has done with the events and all the games broadcast that's really kind of special social media has done a great thing but there's only so many hours in the day that one person can do to cover and what do you delete if you're going to do something special there so it's just that's a hard call it really is and and now when you were doing the TV news I mean how long was your segment like s minutes seven minutes but that usually covers four topics over seven minutes because you're doing video and you're doing board it's just it's really hard to find the slot my my response is just go enjoy what ESPN's coverage looks like and what they do on ESPN one ESPN 2 and just enjoy that exactly next topic next topic okay here let's go to Michael he says Dion needs Carlton Fisk to tell him how to act as he did when they both played baseball Dion's act wore thin as a player in the NFL and will now as a coach well they're really bitter in Colorado now the CU alums and the fans they like what they're seeing that's great but that three and 0 start became a one and eight finish and then there was another truckload of players who were forced out of that program in the transfer portal and now there's this next wave of new guys that are coming in and you know Colorado opens their season tonight and I'm going to watch it because I want to see how different they are with shador Sanders who I think is a fine college quarterback but they're playing North Dakota State that's onea as good as North Dakota state is Colorado will mop up the floor with them you know just like San Diego State will probably do the same against Texas A&M Commerce but at the end of the day this whole season will spin on what kind of success they have going to the big 12 you know and will they be better or will defensive coordinators figure out everything that Dion and that staff is going to run and they'll defend him and they'll take them apart again and then coaches are runup scores because a lot of coaches Pack 12 and in the Big 12 are still irritated at what Dion did to all those kids that he forced into the transfer portal and he ran off uh will the story get old and stale you know if they sit there and go three and nine this season yeah he's going to have some problems keeping his job and there's just to me from a media perspective there's no reason for him to pick this fight with the media answer the questions let the media do their job and uncover the games and the product on the field well you know the transfer portals Going Bonkers with the Aztec too but it's maybe the players are choosing to leave it's just a weird dynamic I'm rooting for Coach Prime I want him to be successful not just because he's a Pack 12 Coach going to a new conference but I just i' like him and even with a little bit of the bravado sometimes he needs to turn it down a notch but overall like it the Carlton Fisk angle is interesting as I'm doing math on my head Dion played baseball for the Braves and the Yankees in the early 90s or mid 90s and was Carlton Fisk still playing for the white socks no no at that point but I think he's talking about how to handle celebrity status and and the accomplishments you think you're going to have or want to have Etc okay well the other catcher I associate with Dion is Tim McCarver sure and he got the ice dumped on him that's still classic and that relationship didn't work out very well but each had their own style they did okay here let's go uh here to Floyd and he says uh college football playoffs are too small FCS has 23 teams why can't cfp do 16 also all FBS conference championships need to be represented and seven at large births well they're not going to not going to let all the smaller conferences in they'll take the best team but the best team will be probably the only team it'll be the highest ranked champion from Mountain West Mid-American the American Athletic Conference things like that we're just not going to take everybody you know and put them in because then you're going to have 637 blowouts and I don't think that's good for the college football playoffs now the flip side does there have to be a better balance I mean we're going to take six SEC teams and maybe one extra from the Big 12 and the Big 10 is that how we're going to get the rest of those at llarge teams in is that going to really be good for college football I don't well you know even in that National Championship what was it it was the TCU and they got blown out it was like a 63 to7 yes that was against what Georgia was it um you know by the way I I get I I how do I say this the FBS versus FCS I always kind of confuse those in my head because I think of division one and division one doublea and how those are different but those are the new names for each of those right and so F so which is the one that's let's say for the the is that FBS or FCS do you get I it's it's mindling it is and like USD here in San Diego is I always think one doublea but it's one of those F ones exactly all right let's let's move on let's go to John as much as I'd rather be concentrating on the games in NCAA football the conference merrygoround is stealing attention from the games the ACU will start disintegrating like the Pack 12 after this season the Big 12 did some damage control but their Marquee schools have already left Nebraska Missouri Texas A&M Texas Oklahoma Kansas is looking elsewhere now the Big 12 will follow the AC Ian yeah is it AC or the ACC ACC the ACC and Pack 12 towards relegation leaving the SEC and Big 10 as the power two it's it's chaos I do think it'll probably change you know here's there's a sidebar story we haven't talked about the Big 12 met last week in Dallas with Yukon Yukon they want Yukon basketball but they have to take everybody else yukon's football program is face first down on the floor M nobody follows it nobody cares and they want Yukon Husky football to be part of the Big 12 you're kidding me yeah well it's so absurd there's a lot of perverse incentives going on right now because everyone's chasing the money you know and it sometimes it just doesn't make sense so there be there probably will be more changes there will be more schools that will defect and go other places but we may also have somebody waking up some morning at the end of next football season and saying Cal and Stanford Atlanta Coast Conference this doesn't make any sense and somebody's going to vacate where they went and go back so there'll be more changes coming but there aren't very many other schools out there to go steal and go get you know C Stanford they're not juggernauts of programs in the first place they're going to end up going these cross country trips and they're going to have like an 0 for season I mean it could be really ugly for those two guys I I project that this UCLA to the Big 10 is not going to work out and Cal Stanford in the Atlantic Coast Conference might not work out and those guys may come back and there'll be a rebirth or a different structure to the Pack 12 Conference it's not going to happen immediately but I think that's that's going to happen the Swami says hacksaw all right here we go let's go to Phillip and he says uh wouldn't you want to go to wouldn't want to go to Russia where they lock people up for the non-crime of just having a little herb on them well it's it's really weird because I asked this question about a year ago to an NHL assistant general manager I said why would these guys go there it's a Payday most of these guys that are going there are at the end of their career but I said it's a lifestyle thing he said but the athletes there are treated like royalty you know as long as you don't do something stupid like taking drugs on a plane and landing in Moscow or you don't do a political comment on social media I I feel bad because I like Chase Delo he's a hardworking honest guy I got to know him when he was in Winnipeg with the Winnipeg Jets and now I'm bothered because the ducks have not put a good product on the ice here in San Diego and they' they've kind of screwed up what was a really well-run franchise they used to draw 11 and 12,000 to home games at the sports arena and now those Crowds Are down to 455,000 and the product hasn't been very good they Haven been in a playoffs in a couple years I mean I don't know what they're going to put on the ice here especially if the Ducks are taking all those draft picks and they're still going to go to Anaheim rather than here they're I have a feel that the NHL team has a responsibility to the local Community to put a better product on the ice than we've seen the Ducks give the GS the last couple years yeah you bring up a number of points there the first thing I thought of was Winston Shepard when he played for the Aztecs and then he was a professional in Ukraine right when Russia invaded and I remember he had to hight tail it out of there and he was okay um but Sports in the middle of a war sounds really tricky the other comment I want or the question I want to ask you is you know you're talking about the Ducks you're talking about Pachanga Arena we haven't heard any real news on the new sports arena that they're planning on putting down there have you heard anything new I have not heard when the Chev of dirt supposed to be turned and what's going to happen to the tenants the goals most notably at that point in time the San Diego soccers are leaving they're going to their new private small Arena uh that would be up in Oceanside so but I don't think the thing is stalled maybe it's been Tangled in red tape about how crony is building it but I thought there had been a solution to the new sports arena because that sports arena is going to be renovation of a facility but it's also going to be housing business and entertainment stuff wrapped around on that parcel of land have not heard much about it lately but I I still think it's going forward yeah well I I could say this our sponsor Dixie Line they're there right next to the sports arena and I think the city owns their land so there's a lot of question marks about the leases and how that's going to be going the timeline seems to keep getting delayed on we go next question okay let's uh let's get some social media folks here involved a lot of good comments and questions here um oh we got to get this one in right here the the this is from Marco Antonio he says I'm from Tijana I love the Dodgers and 49ers but man this guy Lee hacksaw to me it's a legend as you can see here in Tijana in fact in Rosarito I couldn't get the signal from San Francisco or Los Angeles so when I was young I listened to this gentleman a mighty 690 great show 7 7,000 Watts from Baja to the Canadian Rockies and it came out of the tower on Rosarito Beach uh just most unique situation I think I've ever been involved and I had no knowledge when I came here of how Mexican radio worked you know I've told the story to John a couple times that when I was initially hired to come here to be the voice of the Chargers and a vice president called me from 690 and try introduced himself to me I got a phone call out of the glue Blue Sky sitting at my desk in Phoenix I worked at KTR I thought I was going to be there forever doing Arizona State and doing a Sports Talk Show and this gentleman called me and said I've represent Noble broadcast group we have the license for extra 690 our game plan is we' just secure the rights to the Chargers we want you to be the voice of the Chargers because we know what you've done with the sundevils and we know what you done with Sports Talk Radio and we want you to come here and then I asked him well explain to me what XT is da da da da and he said' we're a Mexican license station I said 'well I'm flattered that you consider me to be the voice of the Chargers and do Sports Talk Radio because I've done very well with that here but I don't speak Spanish and I thought I thought he wanted me to come do play byplay in Spanish and do Sports Talk Radio I didn't know I've been to San Diego once in my life or actually twice in my life actually we came over and played the Holiday Bowl Arizona State uh played Arkansas on the Holiday Bowl we had a great time so I had no knowledge what soever what he was making reference to and then they explained to me how the licensing worked the programming worked and their plans were we're going to build studios in San Diego and would be an English-speaking station on a Mexican license so that's that's my story of how I got here and I had no knowledge how Mexican radio is relationship with us broadcasting work but now I know well just the way radio is structured in America is all the stations on the west start with a k right and they start with what a w on the East right and then suddenly they're starting with an X you know here because of the Mexican stations but remember it was always like around midnight they'd play the Mexican national but then now I'm sure all those Mexican stations if they're doing sports radio which I know many of them aren't anymore but they if they are they're probably just 247 syndicated ESPN stuff some uh and and the whole landscape the advertising landscape has changed much harder now to do crossborder broadcasting there's very few stations that are on this side that are owned or licensed to Americans who are rent you rent the license you don't own the station it's you share crazy stories at extra about the engineers and how they'd have to connect to the the signal in Mexico and sometimes things went weird exactly we'll do that another time okay but Tiana great to have you on board tell all your friends South of the Border to join us on those podcast and also check my website okay let's uh get some charger fan comment from the two cent peanut gallery he says you get a thumbs down for regurgitating that 8-year-old joke from South Park about the ler fans in La when are you all going to get tired of regurg hating that same cowardly narrative it is cowardice to hate on a team just because you think they don't have many fans we're growing baby don't you remember the year after the Rams won the Super Bowl week in the 17 80% Chargers and Sofi yet you all haven't updated your fear of being outnumbered real ones from La like myself stay loyal to the only team in the NFL that has always stayed loyal to the SoCal soil you look good in powder blue don't agree with you but that's okay you look good wearing the lightning bolt uh at the end of the day uh I still think La is a Rams town until the Chargers become a playoff team and Justin Herbert has not won a playoff game yet I still think it's going to be a Rams toown can the bolts take control of the market yeah gotta win and you know let's let's also be realistic there is no bitterness in La you got the franchise there's a lot of bitterness this side of Camp Pendleton that we lost the franchise and a greedy owner you know turn is back on 55 years of loyalty I don't think that will ever change we do cover them I cover them I probably cover more of the Chargers than any other member of the media uh the the newspaper here the Union Tribune uses an LA writer and they they cut and paste their stories uh I don't know what kind of readership the Chargers have uh the TV stations will they'll go up and they'll they'll shoot some games and maybe they'll run some highlights but they don't cover it as much as I cover it and I I think I cover the NFL on the Chargers more than the Union Tribune knows and I know I cover it more than anybody on Sports Talk Radio and if I was doing Sports Talk Radio like this podcast we'd be doing Chargers and RAM stuff on an almost even Steven basis and then we'd cover the Raiders and the Denver Broncos and all the other NFL stores I do it differently than anybody else in the working media but there there is people to hear just this side of Camp Pendleton from Oceanside down cannot forgive them fans do watch the games U probably about half per half of what used to watch it when it was the San Diego Chargers they used to have TV ratings I want to say of 30 shares I think they probably have 15 shares now on the CBS affiliate down here um I don't know what of the 15 share that's watching I don't know if they're watching because they still love the team or they're watching because they hate the team and want to see them lose or they just watch because it's the NFL game that's on on town so that's the media perspective I'll let the fan John Riley from Le field give you his opinion well the fans a lot of them are still rightfully poed the San Diego fans yeah we have some friends that live up in um in La they're actually more like Huntington Beach actually but they're season ticket holders for the so at Sofi and they're excited about the Chargers but you know that that seems to be the exception to the rule but I can sense in San Diego that some of the fans are sort of getting over it you know now they're just want to follow the NFL and it's another southern California team but dude you you cover not just the Chargers you cover everything you are the hardest working man in sports journalism and you think about what you do when when you're writing your best 15 your one man's opinion all the other things that you post on the website the content on Twitter the podcast all the video clips and everything else that we're doing it's like a d a deluge of Hacksaw Sports content that nobody does anywhere in Southern California well thank you for the compliment I work hard at it I'm kind of addicted to it that's why I have the website you can't if you you've never checked the website you're really missing something so it's there every morning it's absolutely free I John I don't know anything in the world is freaking free right now really but it's free so check the website and of course we love doing the podcast and we just trying to cover the waterfront that's that's who I am that's how I act that's what I'm addicted to that's sales pitch so you can be upset at San Diego fan for being pissed off they have a right to be pissed off but uh we do follow it down here I do follow it I can't wait for the start of the season oh it's going to be great and by the way the charger followers on Instagram are unbelievable and whenever we post a video there they all go crazy so let's let's get one more comment here Angels let's talk a little LA Angels this is from childis cavillo and he says uh things are looking good after the owner made some costly mistakes the young players are looking good and we have some good prospects to look forward to also most of the best Pro Prospects are in doublea which is good everyone needs to chill otani's on the Dodgers nobody can change that r is probably going to get dropped in the offseason well it's been a tough finish of the season they really had a lousy last month of August uh we saw flashes where we saw zitto ohappy Chanel um to a degree monc and even Joe Adell they play well in spurts but they just have enough guys to play 162 games and now what's happened in August I mean they've been miserable I mean what's your record 54 and 79 right now I mean it's they're probably going to close to 100 losses the young players their Farm systems not highly rated they need volumes of young players they need not to make mistakes in free agency uh the pitching staff is Wafer thin um it's just not it's not a good look and it's sad on Arty Marino's watch this thing has just become a disaster and once you dig a hole it's tough to climb out of this hole and there's no guarantee that free agency because they've they've missed on 50% of the free agent acquisitions the free agency is the solution and sadly for Mike Trout he had what all these years of just being hurt and he can't stay on the field and he's the last Cornerstone of credibility they have from what was a good franchise Once Upon a Time so long road back I wish he'd sell it I wish he had better baseball people making the decision but he's elected to keep it and he's elected to keep the general manager there to continue to operate it and try to build it through the farm system but boy that that takes forever and I I wish I had a better answer for you I mean you can be optimistic and you can be hopeful and it's a it could be a great baseball Market could be a great hockey Market could be a great Market Orange County under itself is a market un itself and it it should have winners unfortunately doesn't have a winner in baseball doesn't have a winner in the NHL right now either John think about how long it's taken the Padres to kind of come back from the depths I mean it was it about 15 years ago was when they were owned by the owner that had them on layup away yeah right that had no resources and now they're filling the stadium up the angels are still a mystery to me but I want to here's just kind of an odd question which version of the Angels do you hold closest in your heart is it the California Angels the Anaheim Angels or the Anaheim Angels of Los Angeles it's the Darren urad Tim salmon Mark Langston Angels okay the Angels who went to the World Series it's the David exin of the world that's the angel franchise that I identify with and I guess they were the California Angels at that point in time I just call them the angels I don't care what the designation is California Anaheim or Los Angeles Angels I just I remember that group how great that group was and that's the last vestage of quality baseball those poor people in Orange County had to root for I from that era I remember the Thunder sticks yes you know and they were just overwhelming but to me it's California Angels it's Bobby grit you know back in that era well that's the AY Angels but boy that would that's a lot of fast balls ago yeah that's in the 70s and then you know even Reggie Jackson was there for a little while and made that appearance in that movie he was gonna shoot Queen Elizabeth so you know the the California Angels to me was cool because they wanted to represent the whole state you know kind of like the Golden State Warriors and I thought that was neat um when they went to Anaheim that's when they became disneyfied if I recall and then now they're the Arty Mareno LA Angels just I just like The Vibes of Nolan Ryan you know wearing that California Angels hat with the with the Halo above Ryan and Tanana and Tanana yeah and I mean that that was a good chunk of time in a different very far back era and then obviously the AY angels and the Disney angels and get to the World Series was electric and that's that's the more modern-day Angels but this unfortunately is terrible you know the prime example is all you need to do if you're in Orange county is just look down i5 and look at what pedco park has become and look at what you can do and this is a much smaller Market than what I think is a much bigger Market in the OC oh yeah look at what has happened here and that that's a commitment of ownership that's with leadership that's with scouting that's with drafting that's with the right free agents and unfortunately we haven't seen much of that in Orange County after the first couple of years when AR Mareno inherited it and they won and then it just it's gone off track it but unfortunately when you're down it takes forever to get it back I don't think they're coming back um if Ry Moreno Remains the owner and and Angel fan everywhere sell the team Ry that's what they all want to do they want to hit the reset button Hey listen we hope you have
