Jarrett Stidham QB1 over Bo Nix? Sean Payton on Denver Broncos depth chart OK training camp practice

Start and here's what you should do with it crumple it burn it rip it up sea Peyton doesn't care about it but there might be something to read into this James Palmer and myself are going to be talking about The Unofficial jear tell you about practice is bonx continuing to pull away with his job what do the Broncos do with Zach Wilson we're breaking it down starting now [Music] [Applause] [Music] Intro it's death chart day baby we've got the unofficial death chart I thought he a death chart day death chart James what show is this so we brought in James Palmer to be death chart yeah what what would you be you would be our uh playing at the multiplex death chart executor yeah yeah what's that called when oh sacrificial media member yeah who would that be I'm not going to make you say it who do we want to bump off out of the group oh wow let me check my notes I was thinking about this long list of people and welcome into the dmvr Broncos podcast we're going to break down the depth chart we're going to talk about Zack Wilson's future of course we're going to break down today's practice with Sean Payton was not happy about and let's get into that after I give a shout out to the Toyota you're talking about these tan knees that's what I thought you were talking about did you get those on uh mountain biking or what no these are Camp knes man M that's true but mountain biking too probably so James were you just as mad about practice as Sean was I should say disappointed about practice no uh because I think a lot of Bad Practice what he's upset about we don't see like a lot of it were mental errors uh in his opinion A lot of it were mental mistakes let's be honest we we break down every practice and we're all watching I got the you know you you I forgot him at at practice and Zach brought him back for me uh my binoculars with my huge strap I look like a professional bird watcher and we're zoned in on everything we still don't know 40% of what's actually happening on the field when there's a mental error from this guy or from this specific player or they're not all glaring the coaching staff knows nobody watching is knowing you know what some of these mistakes are so no it wasn't um i' like your opinion too but it wasn't as jarring right as Shawn as it was to Shawn as it was to us watching right right 100% okay so um I think they were due for a day like this the way that he has been working them I mean um these practices have been as as long as every minute of the CBA has allowed them to have um the gassers at the end of practice like as physical as they've been and as much as he wants his team callous it might be his most frequently used word during training camp is callous and so uh I think they were do for just a just a a day where it's just like man A lot of times mental mistakes happen when what is happening you're physically exhausted yeah so I think that's probably part of it um but you know I think I think one of the biggest things you need is when things go wrong you need to see how players react especially when you got position battles and especially when you have a rookie quarterback when things don't go right with the offense I'm assuming there's mental errors on that side of the ball y let's see how bonick bounces back cuz I want mistakes y does that sound crazy guys I want mistakes in practice no and you told us last week about how the Chiefs and other teams approach practice ners a lot of these other teams are like push the ball push the ball a little bit try to find a way to you know try to fit a ball into a spot and then see if you can make that play and if it gets picked oh well I guess we found out we can't do that we're going to cross that one off on the game sheet exactly and then with a rookie quarterback it's when you make that mistake what what do you do then right like how do you bounce back that's one of the major things they're evaluating right now so let's see how bonck looks tomorrow I think that's going to be exciting cuz when things go wrong coaching staff suely young players want to see what you do the next day and what is Sean keeps saying about this roster it's young it's energetic it's hungry but it's young and so he wants to see how this team responds those other teams you mentioned teams that have been to the Super Bowl recently I maybe Kyle Shanahan and Andy Reid push him a little bit but he doesn't really need to see the mental makeup um of a George KD of a Patrick Mahomes of a Travis C no that's a totally different team and Shawn is putting them through the grind James they just wrapped up the 12th practice a training camp but more importantly they just wrapped up their eighth practice in 9 days where all but two have been in pads and the only reason those weren't in pads because the CBA say putad but the one was before their pad day SC on scrimmage Saturday which was pseudo scrimmage all of us thought as long as that walkthrough was in the beginning I'm like oh this going to be a shorter practice this is going to be some mental reps then we're really going to get after on Saturday they're banging out there for 2 and 1 half hours like they you know so I I think every corner where we thought maybe he he cuts it a little bit Shawn pyton hasn't done it so I wasn't surprised that there' be a day that didn't live up to Shawn standards uh mentally and you know what if I told Shawn Payton okay Sean you're going to you're going to have 11 oh he he'll love this you're going to have 11 good practices mental practices to start the 12th one you're you're going to just say he's okay I think he'd sign up for that right away I think he might yeah I mean but I also look at it and go like a lot today was a lot of situational football which you have to have down but it's a lot up here for yard is is very precise um so also their uh criteria today was probably more mentally driven than a lot of other plays in football so that could play a part in it as well and there are teams around the league that I've been with where it's like when you get into really heavy situational football like you tone down the pace a little bit you want to make sure that everybody gets it so a little bit more of like a simulated walkr or it's like slown down a little bit or it's not like they went like full speed in some of these situational moments so like that's also testing them mentally but there's probably a greater chance for a mistake too yeah that's a really good point and I wonder James so uh Sean told us yesterday it was short yardage third and one fourth and one in the very first team period that they did all the Broncos did when jarson was a quarterback was around the ball all the Broncos did when bonck was a quarterback was run the ball that was a run period exactly exactly Zack Wilson comes up Sling It Baby slinging it what if he audibled at the line how pissed would Shawn be now I don't think Zach did that Defense dominated but when I first saw that I was like oh Zach saying I'm going to throw the ball but a reason why maybe I think Shawn was a little upset with the way practice went in that period where it was run focused the defense dominated I mean nearly every single play was a tackle at the line of scrimmage or a tackle for a loss now the defense has the upper hand because they're told this is a run period period so you know what the they're running over to that field knowing this a run they're not they're not caring about covering that wide receiver out there the outside linebackers aren't worried for a guy coming out of the back field um but do you think in Shawn Peyton's mind if the offense has a better day he's going to be a little happier if the offense has the worst day he's going to be a little more upset he's running the offense so I mean that's he has a little bit of stake in the game on that sense uh from a competitive standpoint obviously he wants everybody to come out and and and win um but obviously that's not going to happen um what stood out to me though with that and we should talk about a little bit like I think and I've talked to some guys on the offensive line like Zack looks really good monster um and they think and I had more than one offensive L me tell me this like DJ Jones looks like a different player and I think that's allow he's allowed to play I think a little bit more what works for him this year compared to being forced because of the situation that they were in to do some things that probably were not his biggest strengths I think you know Myers I think is a big part of that probably in the middle of this defense I think the D Line's going to be solid if they stay healthy like I I don't really have a whole lot of concerns about that group up there right now especially when I'm hearing kind of things about both those guys and Allen just keeps going man if I can be like JJ Watt who I played with in Arizona that's he references all the time apparently I'm told um hey man that's a good guy to strive for it's a great gu but the it's it's noticeable what the group is doing up front defensively specifically obviously they're pinning their ears back in a run period like they they're right there they know what you know the ball's coming between the tackles but I will say the one guy what's the who's the guy that flashes for you let's just use today run period in running the football out of this back field oh uh audre ese yeah yeah Ju Just an absolute tank dude's got dude's got a roll already oh you can tell and here's the thing about estimate and Sean brought it up a little bit ago um but he's not going to be the fastest guy on the field in fact he's the bronos slowest running back in terms of 40 time and you saw even when he ran his F 4 the most like 15 yard plus runs in college football last year that's it and when you look at his 10 yard split he takes off in those first 10 yards and we saw that on one run play today where good thing this was not a game because I think legitimately a linebacker would have been ran over and then right after that a safety would have been ran over because when ese hits the hole which is where everyone is he is going down hill and so he's going to be he's he's always going to fall forward I I mean I think gavon has looked really really good so I I obviously he's he's their starting running back yep but when I say ese has a role I go back to when we were standing at the podium I think this was I don't know what day this was they're all running together by now um somebody's like you're short Red Zone yardage uh you're short Red Zone you guys weren't um where you want to be and he Sean just goes we're we're awful y like that's one of the spots I guarantee he's going to be really important it's the short red zone where two three yards is a big deal Y and he's going to get that and I think that's going to be a role we're going to see uh down in that area because what does that also do for your offense maybe limiting in a confined space the number of throws your quarterback has to make y uh rookie quarterback out there or if it's Jared stum like you you want to limit chances for mistakes specifically in the Red Zone never take points off the board right if you can run the ball well down there that's going to help everything and I think that's going to be one of est's roles like he's he po he's one of those players I have like a list of like five or six guys where I'm like every day there's like a play probably two of this group um and he is in that group yeah and I think the coaches are trusting him and that's going to be absolutely huge and James there might even be a third down roll that's open because samj and we'll talk about the depth chart samaj is listed as a number two running back on this team not a lot of people are convinced that he has a lock to make this team right now and if you don't have samaj he played a massive role with the Broncos last year in the two-minute situation whether whether it was in the first half or the second half where he was just catching the ball five yards down the field and we heard Sean talk about it yeah you have to bring the chains out to see if you got the first down but every time you got the first down he did like I it is funny because he like second half of the year was like it was like the ball always was going to samaj third down it was the check and then you're right it'd be like third and six he'd catch like a four- yard pass and find two yards get a first down and now everybody's like I don't know he's gonna make the team what do you think I I wouldn't be surprised if he's the guy they shop if they're like somebody has because I I I think he's valuable in the league for sure when he was in Cincinnati and I would talk to those people uh on that coaching staff they were like they loved sasi Pon yeah loved him specifically you remember when uh Mixon went out during that stretch after he was uh I think he went out for a series of games and smj P was like incredible like Joe burrow was like raving about him he can play um if you want to get younger and you want to kind of flip the flip the position group maybe that's somebody you're like hey somebody goes down somewhere in the league and you're like hey we have some Aon if you're interested but also like I'm not kicking him out the door um this is a tough position group to evaluate because Jal also offers something the other three were talking about don't without a doubt so you need that chains of pace guy uh oh there's four yep Burton and then Burton I always say throws things for a loop Y and it's funny with Burton because like I'm always like well just put Lucas croll in that like hybrid put your tight end in the back field sometimes like so many teams in this league do and then Burton like lays like a monster block or he made like a one-handed catch the other day and I'm like oh God he just show showing me every time that he should be on the field and then you hear Sean talk about him and you're like he's making the te yeah 100% 100% so it's it's an interesting position group for sure it is but let's say you do let's say someone does offer you let's say the Bengals they love samaj they want him back they offer you something you ship them out you got a wide open third down position for you maybe that could yeah and I wouldn't like kind of you know teams do this all the time like hinted out there like hey you know we might be interested if anybody's interested in samaji I wouldn't do that at all if somebody hasn't shown me that they can step into that third down spot right right and I the way that I think I think javante picks up the picks everything up Blitz wise really really well I think he's getting better as a pass catcher that would be your like ideal situation I think he's getting better catching the football I think he picks everything up uh in terms of protections but you better make sure that you're in good shape with a rookie quarterback that whoever's that third down back is picking stuff up because you know he's not going to really miss much no at all no not not at all and that is uh that was Shawn pton safety net last year um and James let's move on to today's practice with the quarterbacks okay after I tell you about you've heard Ready Set just I was laughing while you're doing your little your little reads there um thinking about the history of swoop yeah uh was B swoop today B was good yeah B's good okay what number would you give him b a Bo Nix's day six a six okay okay I thought you were going to be lower on him and so we're kind of right around there I went for bow I gave him a seven today which might seven you thought I'd be lower than yeah I thought you'd be low cuz when we were walking out we were just chitchatting and uh and I thought you were low on B but you thought he was a little bit above average today and Henry also gave him a six so you guys were in lock step look at us we didn't even talk about this Henry disappeared after practice I don't know where he went I he's okay yeah no idea don't think was atess he was there one minute and his body disappeared it disappeared I turned around don't know I'm happy he didn't steal your uh binoculars oh that's heavy that's heavy stuff I know it really is Henry if you're in the chat say hi or text me back yeah they did they did end a game like minute 30 on the clock Bo got him field goal range got a field goal if I remember correctly he did yeah Will whats uh yeah barely got them into field goal range but did but did but did um so the situation was a minute 38 left on the clock on the defense's 38 yd line each team had one timeout tie game fourth quarter yep so you need any points here he did a decent job he did a decent job um he moved the ball a little bit uh it's just it's it's I want more shots and I was excited because I was watching the receivers work out early in practice when the individual periods and I heard from the field I don't know if for allow to report this stuff but I'm going saying anyways be a bad boy some shots today and I was like oh let's go there's going to be some deep shots today I'm going to see some balls get down the field I'm see some eyes get up and look downfield it's not named Zack Wilson and it didn't happen really that much it happened a little bit seven on seven of course y uh a little bit easier time to do that um but what I think is a difference and this is kind of an interesting thing um you get conservative in that uh to an extent in that type of setting yeah you obviously don't want to turn the ball over it's tied right um and you're trying to get points this has happened multiple times when they do two minute either the first or second play usually the first stum comes out and guns it downfield why do you think why do you think he tries to go big play hunting early to uh have other shots behind him I don't I don't know I think it's because in this situation when you're in that type of spot on the field you're getting your most traditional look from the defense right your most normal look cuz once you pin yourself into a corner it's third and whatever and they're like they know they need to get here it's end the game they need to get to this spot and then defenses start obviously catering a lot to time on the clock distance that you have towards field goal all this stuff I I really love that stum has like he you he's he's thrown like a like a 25 30 yard pass early in these because he's taking advantage of that more Trad you kind of get pigeon into where you are in the situation of the twoin I think that's kind of a cool veteran move where he's like yeah and it's helped him like it helped he did the same thing today didn't he a big big play was it the first play of the drive I think was the very first play Drive see this is went for 19 yards this is like a little stum thing like that he does where it's like well and I think it's kind of smart to go out there and and it's be aggressive in the early portion of it because you're getting probably the most traditional look from the defense so uh there was also another s thing that he did let's give our grades for SDM now that we're talking about him James where are you going you know what I'm going to give a tie for today I'm going to say six as well okay I like that cuz there were I neither one flashed over the other one today and neither one played as well as I think they played yesterday that's fair that that's totally fair and I think I went right around there I wenton with a six hry with a five and a half so we're all kind of around the same area for stum and you're exactly right so SDM started with that deep shot for 19 yards which almost gets the Broncos into field goal range like could push it but it doesn't really matter you Jarrett Stidham's day have a minute 20 left you still have a timeout you got plenty of time to get 10 more yards to get into safe field goal range but then he faced another stum scenario incomplete incomplete and then Scramble for three so it's Fourth and seven from the offens is 40 57 yd field goal do you punt the ball do you go for it I think in a what do you do in a game it's it's tied there's like 51 seconds left if there was that amount of time would you have thrown thrown thrown and you had your time out still no because at that point I think you might try to get a couple yards and burn some clock so that if you don't get in better field goal range I don't think you would have put yourself clock management wise and Sean's very good at this this isn't like some past head coaches uh he's he can p Gallery um I don't think he would have left himself with that decision with that amount of time on the clock I don't think Sean would have done that if this was actual game so don't you practice how you play isn't that what Sean told us about seven on sevens and true but I think I think there is an aspect and I think maybe I should ask him this tomorrow like you're going to adjust some things just to see certain things right like let's see let's see if Jerry can just throw it yep us into it you know what I mean yep it's a little bit different I'm curious if that happens I'm not saying it does but I would assume it does well and I think there's two re scenarios here that showed us that Sean just wanted to see how the team reacted how things went because on Fourth and seven well what are you doing if it's Fourth and seven from the 40 with 50 seconds left are you punting no you going for it going for it if you don't get it though yeah tell VJ guess what let your boys go out there and make a play okay I like that well that's what Sean did so maybe this was game like scenario and stum not only converts he hits a 32 yard pass to courland Sutton and something happened on defense either they were so caught off guard they were only playing to the sticks there was a miscommunication cuz courland was wide open and stum did the smart thing the veteran thing here he didn't try to lead him into the end zone for a walk-off touchdown he threw the ball short courland Dove for it short just to make sure that he was going to catch the ball get the completion yep because then the Broncos are first and goal from the e and you know what Sean said at that point with 51 seconds left he said we're done I don't need to see how this finishes the offense is going to win that's what he did what do you think of that I've just watched all these practices if that was Bose's Drive do you think they play it into the end zone absolutely yeah okay just Cur I'm just curious so you think that means Shawn has more trust in stom wants to see how Bo handles a 50-second situation that's what you're saying that's what you saying I see look that's not what I'm saying at all that is not what what are you saying I'm saying W is it what you're saying it's like you said earlier like oh maybe it won't like would they really throw three times in a row like Bo got an extra down the other day during the two minut you saying there was a neutral Z infraction there was that one and then there was another just free down so like I think we can adjust some things if we'd like to is what I'm saying ohome I I see what you're saying I'm picking up what you're putting down so stom completes that one um where obviously completes I mean they would have been able to easily get the field goal there and then Bose's turn not as very check down yeah very check Downy and then uh here's the other I'm going to bring that up very check yeah very check Downy very Robert check Downy but isn't that supposed to be steady situm isn't he supposed to be Mr checkdown I don't know man no balls are going downfield yeah outside of Zach you're right outside of Zach um and then so at the very end of Bose they're in second and 10 from the offense's 34 yd line so 51 yd field goal or so right here 26 seconds left they have a timeout keep that in mind they have a timeout B hits a short completion for a couple of yards so now they're within 50 yards uh easy field goal 20 seconds left on the clock instead of calling a timeout kicked it Sean goes hurricane so which means the the Special Teams runs out so clearly Shan was trying to see if we're in this sit back to your point where you said yeah don't you want it to be game like right he just changing it's game like you're calling the timeout you're giving willut time what you do you change stuff up to see certain things yeah and then will Lut comes in and Nails the 50 yard field goal so stum and B complete that um and I think they were both like pretty equal throughout the rest of practice both had a touchdown and seven on seven um and what else stood out to you about those guys James I'm looking at my notes here um look at you you go old school just like Hank what do you mean with the uh the paper pen and paper I just got iPhone you go old school with you know the pen and paper that that is old school James your kids probably don't even know what like pen and paper is yeah do they write cursive my son is an artist wow okay paper all the time does he do art paper pills through the roof he doesn't do art on an iPad that's not where the art that's no it's like three that's like uh it's like he does graphic art and 3D art on on the iPad yeah he crushes at all man that is impressive uh I don't watch James Palmer and Terrell Davis draw the Broncos logo together uh and get him compared that's coming up on broncos.com in a little while oh was this inspired from bonck no this was inspired due to detour if you've ever seen his work around the city which he is incredible he had that great mural of Yoki and uh Jamal Murray remember that one he did that one he did all the murals inside mile high Y if you ever see the one that's in there that's amazing of all the uh Hall of Famers yep it's incredible that's incredible so he we did it right there and he judged us on our drawings my son did was there a winner oh it was easy it was a clearcut win well the way you're talking about uh your abilities I'm going to take uh TD on that one Bingo Bago um I thought uh I thought there were a couple um deep into the progression plays by uh STM today that they've jumped out a couple of times lately where it's I got to get to the four lead and gets to it quick enough to where that's the the you know usually a back leaking out and he's done that pretty well I think I think Bo had a couple couple pretty decent balls today I don't think they were helped by their receivers as a whole yeah today kind of back to back let me look uh the one to oh STM had the great deep shot it should have been a touchdown and hit Josh Reynolds in the chest oh my goodness pretty decent coverage yeah Chris abam drain yeah like yeah which was interesting uh decent coverage but think you got to catch that ball that was a good ball it was almost like he started to play defense on it but trr was was in a great position to defend the pass but not to intercept it but it Josh only like it hit him right in the chest like you said he was only using one hand it it was weird yeah that should have been a touchdown yeah um and then I I I still keep seeing B having a lot of like retreating like there's a lot of balls thrown backpedaling um he gets the ball out quick he does um but in some of those it's a little that's a scary thing in the league because if you're not going forward and you don't have Patrick Mahomes Josh Allen arm Talent like backpedaling and throwing is a dangerous game in the NFL what why don't you say if you don't have Zack Wilson armed Talent well you could probably throw that in there actually guys got a hose um but yeah he does have a tendency to to backpedal when you see him not do that and he go drops back sets comes for like he's on time he's he's he's accurate he's a good quarterback in that sense and I'm kind of curious what CH maybe we'll ask him that too we write that down Zack man you got a lot of questions let's ask him yeah let's ask some questions tomorrow you think you can get a one-on-one with him yeah yeah there you go um and yeah one of one of the in seven on S he had two great passes and that was probably the Highlight for Bo outside of making into field goal range he had a pass to Lucas croll for about 20 yards got down to the 5 yard line maybe Lucas would have scored he acted as if he definitely would have scored spiked the ball in seven seven seven yeah can't talk about that it was not a good run it was just like the play just kind of fizzled out uh you can't yeah and then he had a touchdown to Tim Patrick for uh what was that or no was it Tim um it was uh yeah to Tim Patrick 20 yards Tim Patrick was wide open and he did the veteran move there of throwing it short just so Tim could make sure he caught it and then he just runs into the end zone but oh yeah um so I would say between those two yeah pretty even day between those guys but let's talk about Zach with Wilson not only his day today if he's trending up if he's trending down and James what his role is because he might be the most interesting backup in the league at least the depth chart says he's a backup is that going to be running downhill with the football at his size like you don't want to tackle him no like he's he's incredible with Bo Nix arm strength the ball in his hands now he doesn't when he's throwing it know exactly where it's going some the times but I don't think the other guy does either so can't believe you said that about in Ohio State the Ohio State quarterback well he he was good at Ohio State and he's he's a good he's a great athlete he's still you know hopefully learning the quarterback position but there's there a window right now for him for sure yeah uh with Russ having some time on the sidelines man him and Nai Harris just going downhill burning clock what if they got Brandon iok then oh man they had him and Pickins and and apparently Steelers are back on the back in it what do you mean back in it back well yesterday it seemed like they were out of the Brandon iuk opportunity now it seems like they're back in it it's completely I don't know where we're going with this but it it's it would be completely out of their organizational Trends to go get Brandon I they just never have done it they just they they groom their own receivers that's what they do they don't really go out big game at the receiver spot they've never done it really in the history of their franchise so I'm not saying they won't do it I'm just saying if you look at their track record as an organization that has only had like three head coaches ever uh which is insane Broncos had three in the past what four years yeah something like that and uh it's just not what they do they don't really do it that's fair so where does he go I don't know I I still think there's a chance he goes back I really do the Debo stuff got very contentious last year and he came back yeah um this is just really hard because you got to do two things at the same time you got to negotiate the trade and then negotiate the contract right so you got to like there's a lot that has to happen for the trade to occur and they could essentially keep him three years he's in the last year of his deal and they can tag him twice y if they wanted to and if he starts holding out that's a lot of money that's a lot of money Brandon but he's a one like there's enough people I've talked to around the league think he's a number one receiver yeah I mean 1300 yards last year Broncos would take a 1300 yard he's got three this the ones about B Nick's arm strength there's like what's that one one's in zero right and then go there's one and then there's one further down too about how like where this narrative come from about us saying that he doesn't have Elite armed Talent there's one yeah so many off platform throws past 30 yards no you're right there yeah all that stuff like it's insane that we're saying this like that he doesn't have Elite arm Talent like you know who believes he doesn't have Elite arm Talent who almost every single quarterback evaluator in the NFL and guess what you can be a good quarterback without Elite arm Talent yeah like that's fine like you can be I'm not here claiming to be like you know a quarterback Whisperer but I think I know the right people to call you definitely do around the league I I've seen who you talk to when it comes to quarterbacks and they they unanimously believe it's not a lead arm talent but that's not that's fine guess what he's really good in some other things like it's not a lead armed Talent did uh Drew Brees have a lead art Talent no no did pton Manning least his time now he can't even have a catch with his kid with his arm like barely works wow yeah poor guy he's doing okay yeah he fine he's doing just fine pton never really had like Elite arm tal at least in Denver he certainly did not Denver definitely didn't but he never really had like elite elite arm Talent there's plenty of guys in this league that have been unbelievably successful go look at the money Philip Rivers made and the games that he won with like nowhere near Elite armed Talent like you can win games and you can be a really really good quarterback in this league without Elite armed Talent right 100% and vice versa you can have a great arm especially in this offense Y and that's it drew bre Shawn pton like that's the other part like he actually doesn't really need it in this offense right my that's my small R about fast decision making it's about decision making it's about accuracy like I think Shawn makes a great point that like you can uh you can be inaccurate on deep throws there's a little more wiggle room right in his offense where it's a quick passing game a lot of the stuff is tight like Zach's really I mean uh B's really good at that mhm he is he's really accurate and that's what fits the system so if he fits the system and fits what they want him to do yes the elite arm Talent awesome would you rather have him have Elite arm Talent OR Elite accuracy right now for this system Elite accuracy okay honestly for any system I'd rather have that and that is what B has yeah I mean here's the one thing like and this is the one when I talk to all these evaluators there's two things that come out one a lot of people believe it is very very difficult to improve your accuracy if you're an accurate quarterback you're just probably an accurate quarterback you can get better but it's it's tough you can get stronger you you I I there's definitely enough people in this league that do believe you can get your arm strength up look at the pipes Brock P's got going on right now if you checked out 49ers camp yeah like you can increase your arm strength for sure as you get older and develop and and things like that and there's ways to do it I think accuracy is a harder thing to attain and I think Bo has that and that's one of the things that just made Josh all such an anomaly yeah he's the outlier time he's 100% the outlier and that was a conversation that a lot of Broncos country had with Drew lockwell Josh Allen did it so can't Drew lock do it there's really only one Josh Allen rued for everybody he really did yep just the hope that people have it's going to be interesting to see with Anthony Richardson he was not accurate at Florida and the Broncos played them late in the season so that'll be an interesting one um all right so speaking of lead arm Talent yeah he's this guy's Zach Wilson's day and future got it Zach Wilson's got it what grade would you give him to today then let's talk big picture I think we're going to be off on this one I'm going to say five wow we are not off on this one I went four and a half on this one and I was going to go five but then just because Zach wasn't able to lead the team at the end of the period to success knocked it down to a four and a half Henry really low on him at a 3.25 anything it stand out about Zach Wilson's day uh yeah and I want to make this a little more broad picture not just today cuz I don't think I I said you and leing practice I'm like I don't think we talk about Zack enough like you guys do this every day we don't talk about me enough what's my future James because he's Zach is he Zach yeah I'm Zach wait you only like Zac right that's it what do you think about the Zac cks um like Zach Morris yeah that's weird that one's weird it's a little too different the Zac is weird too that's just Zach yeah the you guys all got um I I I think as a whole Camp has been better for Zack Wilson than I thought it was going to be I also believe uh it's better for him than probably people in the building thought it was going to be um and I think that's pretty interesting not saying he's going to go out there and win the job week one right now even though he hasn't been told he's out of the competition yet we're all seeing a little bit of how the Reps and and and things are being divided up um I do believe that they're pleasantly surpris surprised with where he's at this is a Reclamation project uh of a kid that probably had a lot of things uh he has to get right uh in quarterback rehab before he gets himself back right I think it's a good spot to be in um for him and for the Broncos I think this has been a quietly decent camp for for Zack Wilson I think that's a great step in the right direction and it's been quiet because he's kind of followed the exact same trajectory I hate these chairs not comfortable um yeah no I slide down in them and I feel so posture looks bad oh man your middle looks I feel like it looks all not yours you chicken wings in the middle yeah it um it's been quiet because he's had the exact same trajectory that B knck has had but everyone's going to talk about B Nick's trajectory the very first week for B knck and Zach Wilson eh what did you expect at least in training camp I think Bo was like fine Zack Wilson was also maybe a little under not under because the expectations weren't high but a little below Bo last week Bo really trended up Zack Wilson trended up and our scores also reflect that this week kind of the same thing Zach Wilson has been uh on an upward trajectory and isn't that all the Broncos could ask for right now Z progress is what you're looking for um we know where this was we know the situation that he was put through in New York um and that's hard on any quarterback which really quick James I know know inside the building the Broncos building they think there's no place that would have been uh worse to go for Zach than New York o I'm trying to think if there would have been so that's the situation they think Zach was in yeah it was tough it was really tough so this is and he knows he needs to get kind of like back on track um and I think he's worked his butt off like I think he's quietly gone about it like the right way and the reason I think this is a great situation for the Broncos is like Shawn Payton's getting a bite of the Apple twice M I have my 12th overall pick that I want a groom I think has a lot of the traits that I think can be successful in this uh system and I handpicked him in the draft uh then I got a number two overall type talent that has some things that we need to figure out um but what if we do uh and a lot of those things are figured out I got to got like two young talented first round quarterbacks in my Camp right now that I can kind of see how they're molding and growing and I think that's really interesting for Shawn Payton to sit there and go through both these guys like I I hope they keep Zach Wilson you know put him on the practice squad maybe you can call them up every single week with the new rule uh so you can literally just drop them bring them up every single day I mean every single week um and let him be around joha pyton let him be around Davis web let him be around this group uh that knows offensive football really really well and see what it becomes I mean I think that's kind of cool because if you develop him like I don't know best case scenario it's like all a sudden that armed Talent it comes together with all this other things and I mean a lot of people around the league are like I don't know if all that's happening but he becomes your starter that's amazing that's like probably not going to happen but that's Pie in the Sky part yeah what if you develop him to be a really good backup what if you develop him that all of a sudden the rest of the league is like hm and somebody trades form what' you go up to get him a less than a seventh round pick and you trade for like a fourth form oh be incredible be incredible like and that who's to say that's not like that's not possible if the if if the rumor comes around the league like man Zach Wilson's really starting to like look pretty decent in Camp like look pretty decent during the season feels like he's bouncing back all of a sudden next preseason he has like a really great preseason you flip him like I just think this is a a kind of an interesting cool situation the Bron are in with Zach Wilson being in their camp and it reminds me so much of Sam darnold and James Sam darnold was a free agent this past offseason but after that football rehab year with Kyle Shanahan let's say he was under contract with the 49ers again you think teams are calling the 49ers to trade for Sam darnold not for a first round pick but for something I mean the Vikings went out and paid him $10 million that tells me there was a market for some sort of trade I think it's such a similar situation both guys come from the Jets both guys what top three picks in the draft um and so I completely agree and one of the things that Shawn pton knows about there's I'm going to mess this up just a little bit but there's something like six good precursor six quarterbacks in NFL history that have failed with their first team either first or second round draft picks that have failed with their first team and then gone to another team and made it to the playoffs taken them to the playoffs I can't think of them off the top of my head but Shawn Payton's been involved with three of them and so Shawn is Teddy part of that Teddy like do you put him in that he only played a stretch but that team went to the postseason I don't think Teddy was part of that uh Drew yeah because he I mean yeah because he played those five games when Drew was out I think he went 5 and0 and I think he made the B season that year but that's not like he wasn't the team's quarterback yeah I don't think it but I mean Sean would take that as like a half one oh Ted yeah he loves Teddy yeah Sean loves Tedd she loves Teddy and how can you not I mean unless you really hated him for not making the tackle in that game yeah okay so I need you to pull your phone out I got it set up because this is what you you ually your phone all the time give me the first round quarterbacks we can probably do this off the top of our head too um let's look at the let's see what was it two years ago so the 2021 class 2022 2022 yeah 2022 class no let's yeah let's do 21 first like the was that Trevor Lawrence I think that he was yeah I think he was 21 here we go I got it right here it um it was Trevor Lawrence yep okay Trevor Lawrence Zack Wilson number two okay give me give me all the first- round quarterbacks okay Trevor Lawrence Zack Wilson Trey Lance um then Justin Fields M Jones uhuh one is on the same team that drafted him yep from that 2021 draft class y everybody else is on a new team right yep all right go to the next year's draft okay 2022 uhhuh all right you quarterback first round quarterback first round quarterbacks you're looking at oh this was a tough one this one was just Kenny picket and he's not on the team anymore oh no no they chose Russell Wilson and Justin Fields over him wait you mean canny pick he wasn't the only quarterback taken in the first round yeah oh yeah it was a historically all right so then go the year behind uh okay so 2020 law we're looking at first overall pick Joe burrow okay um we're looking at Tua we're looking at Justin Herbert we're looking at was that it this year no Jordan love at the end of the draft so that one actually that was pretty good hit hit hit hit so like my point is it's kind of a crapshoot so why not protect yourself with the Zach Wilson move to add another first round talent because look at that's just one year apart one year hits one one year nobody hits yeah and there's still some people that are like Trevor Lawrence hasn't probably lived up to what we thought he was going to be uh as one of those like Premier first overall picks so why not like do what the Broncos are doing and overprotect yourself with essentially two first round picks in your Camp right now James unless you have the quarterback position figured out you should be always you should be swinging um nobody has it figured out the Chiefs do you know they there te they don't have it figured out they have a great one what else have they done at the position no I'm saying right now fig say I thought I thought you meant like teams that like figured out how to draft I see what you're talking about maybe Packers yeah maybe the Packers maybe the Packers figured out what three decades we do it just doing that yeah but James there's one other thing that you that you touched on with Zach Wilson and I don't think he's making the final 53 man roster but I also don't think another team's going to be going out there look the Broncos traded less than a seventh round pick for Zack so I don't think another team's going to go out there to make him their quarterback to their backup right now and so the exctly so why would a team bring him in to be their three or make a move to grab him to be their three and start all over like right I think he's just going to stay and then also there's a little bit of loyalty from Zach because working with Shawn Payton that's going to help his image moving forward like you said Davis Webb is viewed as one of the upand cominging guys maybe he gets an offensive coordinator job next year and bring Zach along with him in that role but then also when the Broncos traded for Zach Wilson the big deal here was they they said we'll pay $2.5 million of his $5 million guarantee so the Broncos are giving him 2.5 million whether he makes this roster or not so the Broncos are paying him too and they would say it in a way of Zack we'll also give you that roster bump every single week by bringing you up to the 53 man roster for game days and on top of that he could Sean could say Zack we have a long-term plan with you you're our backup quarterback next year and if if you develop well and Bo doesn't you could be in play for our starter because Jared stood I fully believe is going to be the backup behind B Knicks in front of Zack Wilson but Jared st's a free agent after this year the Broncos got a deal for Jared STM at 5 million a year he could go out there and probably get 10 million a year to be a backup so seven and a half million somewhere um but the Broncos 10 but yeah the Broncos might not want to pay Jared stum to remain their backup quarterback if bonick develops into the starter for next year and so they could say look Zach we've got a great role for you next year to be our backup yeah so like everything we're pointing at is like this is not a bad position that the Broncos have put themselves in right and it's not a bad position Zach Wilson's put himself in either um there's obviously a risk but I don't think there's a whole lot of like what's the word for it like consequences to taking this risk no not at all so I kind of like it I kind of I kind of think it's been fun to watch honestly yeah I do too and something else that was fun to watch was Shawn Payton on the podium talking about the to do um you know obviously massive mentor to Shawn um and this Sean's not alone in the early part of camp for that first preseason game really not caring about dep chart at all yep there are some head coaches that have had their head of PR fill out the dep chart for the first preseason game y over the years I've been told that like shows you how much they care about the depth chart um well didn't we hear Sean maybe say that's what happened today yeah he was like I just want to spend five minutes uh with Patrick uh instead of 40 yeah um it it really isn't something that that they care about announcements during Camp matter he is now our starter like that's important um but these dep charts it really doesn't matter at all and I don't even think it's going to be entirely how reps go reps could be varied off of that he just puts rookies as third string and that's what Bill parcel's did and you know we can overanalyze it all we'd like um I know people are going oh it's deari matys and Riley Moss yeah up there tied for one I believe and Levi W or and then Levi Wallace uh there on the two so I do think they took a little more time if they're going to put an ore on there either or on first team I need put a little more time in the 5 minutes probably yep and there were a little there was a couple interesting things like I thought for every position battle it was going to be or I thought the quarterbacks were going to be Zack Wilson or Jared SDM or bonx they didn't do that but it's because he wants to the rookie to earn it or honestly he just doesn't want to spend 40 minutes on it he only wants to spend five minutes on it um but then there was the center competition that's one that's wide open mhm Luke wattenberg is named the first team Center on there but Sean said no we like what we've seen from Luke but that's still a very competitive position there so wanted to give zero interest in the depth chart saying don't read into this it's something we had to do by 2 p.m. today to get it out there for our first preseason game so you're going to see a lot of hot takes out there about looking in the depth chart with bonck being third that tells you all you need to know bonck is not the third quarterback on this team he puts rookies at the end and I think he spent about as much time on the quarterback depth chart as he did with the rest of the depth chart yeah when I me interested about is I believe there was a quote today where Shawn did say Zach's going to be with I mean uh Jarrett's going to be with the ones and we'll see how the other guys get with the ones yep did he say something of that nature he he said Jarrett's going to uh have some time with the starters or with the ones and we'll see about the other guys because that that was interesting it is but also it's probably a little bit of how many reps are those starters going to play what are those first couple D if the first drive they March down the field and they get a touchdown probably a lot of those starters are out right then it's just like from a from a from a rep standpoint and drive standpoint the the other ones just didn't get an opportunity with the ones just because that's what ended up happening because you got to worry about all these other guys and the Reps that they're getting as well that are starters for your team so that probably plays a little bit into what he's saying but I think is that more or less him saying Jarett starting this preseason game 100% that's exactly what he said there Jared stum he did not say this but it's pretty clear STM is going to start this first preseason game but also James we knew that before today because who started the first day of OTAs STM who started the first day of training camp STM so if Shawn were to break that Trend and go with B for the first training camp game or the first preseason game I think that would that would mean something to me I would say B knck has the started without a doubt that's a good point and so he's leaning in with that Trend it's going to be SDM who was second who got the second day in training camp it was Bo Bo so who's going to get the second preseason game B it's going to be B well I I've been saying this here too I didn't think they'd make a decision until after the second preseason game um because I don't think you're going to make a decision after Bo has a chance to not run with the ones you're going to have this preseason game against the Colts he's not going to run with the ones and you're go think I've seen enough the starter like didn't play with the starters no so I always thought and my understanding was that it was going to be after the second preseason game is when they'd like to make the decision y um and that seems like that's still where it's shaping out to go yep 100% And especially because it's pretty clear this is now a two-man competition they don't need way to third preseason game to let Zach go and they might not even play the starters in that third preseason game since now it's the last preseason game so I think that's exactly how it's going to go and then James I do expect that Wednesday I think is when we're going to see bonick name the official starter of the Broncos that's that's how I think this is all going to shake out um but I do think it's pretty clear that tomorrow Thursday Sean's going to tell us Jared's the starter yeah for the first I was about to say oh I was like I stopped paying attention I was like he means the first pre right yeah right yeah that would throw a wrench in everything so um that's that's everything today anything you want to throw out there James yeah jquan McMillan makes a play every single day Y at the line of scrimmage or behind the line of scrimmage that so this isn't really like uh in coverage where he's very good this is Smarts this is instincts this is he has surprised the offense a couple of times coming on like a corner Blitz um this is a lot of talent and mental ability at the line of scrimmage uh with some of these plays it's been every single day yep um I think it's super fun to watch a really instinctive nickel Corner yeah uh that playing on the inside because you can really do a lot of different things yeah um I I have a fascination with the with the position um on our show at NFL Network last season we were always having nickel corners on the show because I think they're so valuable to defenses now with tight ends and guys that play number ones play inside and outside so frequently your ability to play kind of like a linebacker tackler type of like just it's a really tough position but it's super important and if you have a really good one it changes your defense we saw Chris Harris and how dominant he was and how great he was uh as part of the no-fly zone in this Broncos team uh when that defense is one of the best or if not the best in football for a stretch he he makes like those type of plays y uh every single day y it's been really fun to watch and what was it he became the first Corner in Broncos history to have backto back to back sacks or games with back to back to back sacks and just insane you know when he got his first sack last year of his in in his life he got his first act last year so he's still developing that and he's doing it at a exponential rate so I think that's a great person to bring up watch He's fun to watch he is fun to watch and I think that is going to be a weapon for Vance Joseph on the defense all right before we get out of here let's hop into the Super chats first one for Mason Bates who says could we see a Super Chats sitt trade with a pre-season showcase unless there's like a major yeah injury situation uh where somebody's in desperate need of somebody that can probably come in and learn a system pretty quickly and be that guy um I don't know how much you're offering but I don't I don't see it happening but and I don't think the Broncos are going to give SDM away because one of the things sha P's made very clear he doesn't really care about the numbers game like ah is it going to be we have to only have four running backs if there's five good running backs he's going to keep five good running backs and so he's made it all about getting the right 53 the best 53 STM is clearly one of the two best quarterbacks on this team so and at the quarterback position especially when you have a young guy I don't think you're moving on from stum unless it's for an offer that just blows you over yeah unless there's just a rash of quarterback injuries which hey that happened last year if you remember yeah I mean I think more quarterbacks played last year than any other season ever yeah so if something like that happens again uh there's a team that could be in need you just go hey Zach Wilson is uh you know far enough along that we'd trust him for a stretch as the backup right let's take this sixth round pick or something that would be wild that would be wild I don't see last one coming in from our friend Brion Troy who says what Defensive Rookie in training camp is catching your eye more and more every day get my roster out Defensive Rookie go Jonah ell no Thomas and [ __ ] oh yeah he's another guy every day there's something well some days it's a fight but uh he he makes a play every day yep like he's he's in that group um Sean said it about uh B today right yep I got to find ways to get him some more reps yeah because he's flashes every day yep uh the rookie I think this is the kid on the other side of the ball that it's like I we'll put more that rotation a little bit more cuz every day there's a play um where he gets into the back field he there's been 12 training camp practices I guarantee he has at least 12 sacks I mean he has been a monster in Camp so far and what do you do I mean if sha Barrett as a rookie seconde guys flashing do you just say ah he's undrafted no you keep playing him you keep playing and you see if he can play against the big boys and the more reps he's gotten with first team the more he just continues to have the exact same production and V is a guy I think he's a lock to make the roster really yep he's been very good
