spot on this roster today a big day for him Craig rollad our referee during their return holding receiving team number 20 half the distance the goal first down so that'll set the Cowboys back and Trey Lance at quarterback making the start this time his first preseason start with the Cowboys of course he played the bulk of the uh first two preseason games against the Rams and then last week in Las Vegas his numbers this preseason rank right up there at the top of the league correction number 19 and number 19 Trey Lance is at quarterback for last year first down pickup of 10 yards for the Cowboys on that pass and right up the middle that's Malik Davis and that's a nice pickup of about five yards Isaiah I'll take that all day long and I know that the Dallas Cowboys offense will well as well this runningback room is going to be one that you need to keep an eye on this uh in this preseason game in particular because we know that Ezekiel Ellie is going to be on the squad we know that Hunter liy on a squad we also know that Rico D's there but are they going to keep a third running back are they going to keep a fourth running back we'll see tonight second and five for Trey Lance with two backs behind him this time and he looks left side and wide open receiver for another first down up near the 34 yd line and that is Tyron Billy Johnson on the receiving end Tyron Billy Johnson out here on the left side of your screen you guys see him he's had a really good training camp he just hasn't had the opportunities in this season you see him trying to get out there and make something happen up there at the top of his St boom puts his foot in the ground now he want to try to find some way to get to the sideline and the inside that's where all the Big Fellas are Bill you don't want to go that way first down at the 33 as the Cowboys work out of a hole here early against the Chargers they bring the Blitz and off to the left side out of bounds there's Jaylen Cropper as simple of a play as that is a quick little speed out that was good into ipation by Tre Lance that's what I have my eyes peeled on today in regards to number 19 he's been improving every single week but he has not been pulling the trigger before guys get out of their route that was his first opportunity to show that today he was right on the spot see the numbers for Cropper this preseason it's also been a kick returner and punt returner for the Cowboys and Running Room for Malik Davis another first down third first down for Dallas they're inside the Chargers into of the field hey Malik I see you getting in there trying to get some positive yardage with one thing that you did not see was number 18 Mr Ryan floi coming down here and cracking down here on the end is what allows for him to get to the outside boom puts his foot in the ground and now you have a chance to get North get you a first down move the chains good play by everybody playing their role to make sure that the offense has a successful play linois with a block on the safety AJ Finley helping Malik Davis get free for a pick up of 18 yards not much that time though Dean Leonard comes up to make the stop on Davis that's a good tackle coming up and making sure that you stop him at the line of scrimmage there but again Trey Lance working through his reads working through his progressions one two come down here and hit your running back that's just a good play so for the first time working behind the chains here is Dre Lance Duce Von the running back and on the give it's going to set up a third and about seven dubon of course drafted last year here and really showed something last week he was injured early in training camp was dealing with a hamstring injury but really showed the juice last week against the Raiders Isaiah and he has the juice too and so often you know you see him do these things in practice you're like well would he have broken that tackle well last week you guys had opportunity to see it firsthand he is Shifty he's hard to find and when you do find him well usually it's the D getting loose so third and seven here Lance with time fires deep downfield as a man tyon Billy Johnson inside the 25 yd line fourth first down of this opening possession for the Cowboys and Bill that is what we call a dime has a really good job by this man right here Mr trand finding the hole in in the cover two safety right here there's a hole right between the cornerback and the safety he knows that he understands that he finds that weak spot and hits him for 25 yds from the 22 Von page it took every opportunity to try to get Dre Lance more reps during practice in Oxnard but you still can't duplicate what the Dak and the first teamers are getting by any means towards the end offensive line is going to have a lot of good film to watch in terms of their ability to go ahead and communicate and pick up these blitzes by by the Chargers that's what Jesse Min the defensive up from his injury last year now moving into a healthy season again he's been the voice of V reason in that cornerback room and they're going to need him even more so now that Don bland is out for at least 6 to 8 weeks all right thanks Kyle there's a late flag coming in after the short gain by Royce Freeman the Veteran running back for the Cowboys who has look good this preseason holding Defense number 91 that penalty's five yards from the end of the Run automatic first down penalty goes against Christopher Hinton and add some yardage there son of the former pro bowl offensive tackle Chris Hinton well the donon Bland injury just look at what he did last nine interceptions he's rolling out his Lance and a short pickup but even before that his rookie season it was when Jordan Lewis went down with the injury Duron Bland came through in a very big way playing as a slot corner for Jordan Lewis at that point and that was not his natural position we found out later on that he had never played slot prior to that and he just went ahead and filled a void at the Dallas Cowboys had he went out there made nothing but plays had a handful of interceptions and then obviously comes back last year and just puts the world on notice and go ahead and go ahead and secure that all pro this dude's Mr consistency they I don't know that they understood what they had when they picked him up but now they do and he's going to be Sly missed well and the other thing about it is of course Trayvon Diggs went down in the second game of the season last year with his ACL injury and so the Cowboys were so looking forward to having those two pro bowl corners on either side Trayvon Diggs and donon Bland and now we're going to have to wait on that we have to wait again back to back years we've been waiting for these guys to hit on the hit the field at the same time and you know just want to wish him a quick recovery and as uh there's Running Room for Freeman past the 40 he still wants to go the big FAL run 6' 238 lbs that's what he's listed as Bill I call him 640 but the Big Fellas are taking care of business up front got double teams going at the line of scrimmage good job by TJ bass is letting off don't get the holding call and Royce Freeman is always going to get downhill that's not the man you want to see one-on-one in the hole nice pick up for Freeman on that play Ryan flenoy here boy Freeman makes it even more interesting the uh running back sit situation for the Cowboys with the the size that Zeke has and Rico D is another guy who can run between the tackles and Freeman and that's what causes a little bit of confusion when it comes to this decision this is not going to be an easy decision by this front office you have Ezekiel ellot and Rico D who are both physical running backs they they both get downhill they both want to run somebody over and Royce Freeman is really the same style of back so if you're looking at it yes he's a really consistent running back he's going to get positive yardage for you but if you're going to keep a third man at the running back position not the fullback but at the running back position do you want somebody who shares the same characteristics as your other two that you're going to keep or do you want to somebody who has a change of pace so that's the decision that this front office has to make more of Royce Freeman or a change of pace back like uh like a a sorry Duce Von Lance fires right side and it's Tony Jefferson coming up with it down the sideline once again Tony Jefferson making a play for the Chargers he was in scouting now he was in scouting he was five interceptions four in the NFL only one at North Dakota State but Tony Jefferson comes up with the pick right there Tre Lance has been really good by 57 so you're seeing a lot of the same body types they're going to be rotating in into those interior defensive line positions and you're going to have an opportunity to see these linebackers on display who can make tackles in the open field these guys are all bigger linebackers than what we experienced last year last year we had safeties Mars Bale coming down leading the team in tackles playing out of position but now you have true linebackers that can run around and hit you in your mouth well what did Jordan love the Packers quarterback say to michah Parsons during the podcast we looked over and saw number 14 playing linebacker well now Maris Bell is playing safety which is his natural position Mar Bell had a terrific season for the Cowboys Easton stick has the first down all I think that's the most important thing a lot of those jumps of course underneath the tutelage of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer what's it been like learning under him and uh having the first D coordinator change of your career you know Zim's good cuz he got a bunch of different variations of defenses and schemes and different uh combinations between one through eight you know you know different coverages and I you know the thing is uh I think he has a great eye for what's happening and I remember uh one day you know me and him was practicing going over play calls at practice he was like I was like maybe you should call this he was like they're going to come out in 3x1 I was like are you sure and sure enough they came out in 3x1 he was like you just got to understand the Tendencies and things like that so his mind is so interesting on the field inom complete pass now you're going into a part of your career where you're now considered a veteran has that gone by quickly to this point and the fact that you've had three successful seasons in the NFL now and now you're going into year four with a lot of expectation yeah man I it went by too fast man me and Tre was talking about I can't believe you know I'm already going into year four um coming in here in 2021 man it's a great honor it's a kind of great honor to be a veteran you know people usually don't last and people don't usually start so well but you know I think that's what make the great ones consistency and I just want to be as consistent as possible you talk about that consistency how do you get there and take that next step as already an elite Edge rusher in the NFL but a chance to to move forward oh you got to move smarter you got to learn more you got to always try to be better you always got to find different ways to get better your work ethic has to get better so each year you know I just find a ways to work harder and find something more challenging for myself you know almost in the gin's mindset just always finding new ways to find pain and when you feel it out here it's almost nothing it's like you've been there before so um so interesting and so much fun this K taking off another a really good throw by Trey Lance had an opportunity run a nice little stem Corner route K take it in take it back up and then get back to the corner good ball location good grab like this going no huddle too Snoop Conor on the carry a little Tempo going back to your point bill that's it's a crazy stat line in terms of guys that that were not on teams last year and want people to remember that following today's game obviously on Tuesday as final cut down there going to be 37 guys that are going to be looking for opport unities now obviously Cowboys have opportunity to bring back 16 guys on the practice squad but there's going to be over 1500 players dropped in a bucket all the same day so The Scouting department has a lot of work to do in terms of scouring for their last little holes they want to feel about that let the first down inside the 45 yd line move the chains again going to continue to give a lot of props to Trey Lance there's a lot of quarterbacks in in this league who are unwilling to sit in a pocket with pressure in their face he's a he's he's a man of of large stature 64 20 what 20 lb 30 lb he's solid but just because you're big doesn't mean that you're willing to take a hit he has been sitting in there amongst pressure through all these different changes in the offensive line and throwing good balls and eludes the rush this time a little fake and got back to the line of scrimmage anyway that's one thing that I've been really impressed by obviously he's had a handful of turnovers today in form of interceptions but prior to to those decisions he had one they both went to the same player but one of them was one heck of a play another one was a bad decision but he has over these three preseason games collectively taken care of the ball even amongst a lot of pressure again when you're rotating through different offensive lines tend to get a lot of pressure in your face down inside the 40 yd line cam Johnson that flag down holding 79 offense 10 yd penalty repeat second down it's Matt wetco it's interesting for the Cowboys at the the swing tackle position you talk about the injuries that occur C for the Cowboys during Camp one of them on the offensive line a couple on the offensive line with chuma edoga as well as Earl Bostic who was on the practice squad last year ioga was on the 53 man roster was a swing tackle last year and the Cowboys looking for a swing tackle to Tyler gon your starter at left tackle and Terence steel at right tackle it's cam Johnson down inside the 40 there is oh we've got the issue I've with the work that I put in this offseason with Dak obviously and then just continuing to build every aspect of a wide receiver uh my confidence is through the roof and so just going out and knowing that you know I'm that guy and just continuing to build on that so that was one of my biggest steps that I took this uh this past offseason that I brought the camp with me and it seems like there's a lot of confidence in the passing game as a whole does that start with Dak does it start with the play caller is it a little bit of everything I mean where does that confidence stem from initially uh honestly everything you you you hit the nail on the head uh obviously Dak is a outstanding quarterback outstanding leader and so when you have a guy like that that's throwing you the ball and leading your offense uh whatever coach wants him to do he's going to get it done and so uh I think that he has confidence in Dak as well and Dak has confidence and all the guys that's around him and so uh just Contin to go out and find ways to get better and challenge oursel to grow each and every day no matter what it may be now it feels like just yesterday you were fighting for snaps you were fighting for the depth chart and now we're getting an opportunity to see some young receivers take that step as well what have you seen from the guys around you in their step forward uh man it's special to see because uh I talk to them all the time and obviously everybody kind of knows how my rookie year went and so I try to give them a little piece of information that maybe I could have used used or could have done differently and just to help them grow and help them build and so uh having all these young guys around uh it challenges me to keep going as well and you know like you said jayen Brooks is is doing an outstanding job we got Flo who's been making plays keep he's coming each and every day just continuing to get better you got crop you know you got a handful of guys that just keep keep chipping away they keep building keep coming to practice every day with the right attitude right mindset and so it's special to see them grow and then like I say uh it's it's good to work off them uh use their use their work as my work and continue to grow and continue to find ways to add to my game or you know maybe build off of what they've done and vice versa so uh it's special to be in a be in a group like that you now you made the change from number 18 to number one this past off season what was the reasoning behind that and then also what's your number one goal going into the year uh the reasoning behind it uh always wanted a single digit and then uh one came open so uh it just reminds me you know just find a way to get 1% better every day uh and I keep I always tell myself be one of one whatever I can do to be one of one do it and uh my goal for this this season is to go show that I'm a playmaker go show that I'm a wide receiver one two three whatever it may be season at the Cleveland Browns a 325 kickoff and back here to host Orleans and Baltimore then a Thursday night game at the New York Giants followed by a game at Pittsburgh that's your start to the season with the bye coming after six games it's imperative for the te Cowboys to get off to a strong start this season of course Mike McCarthy in the final year of his contract many of the coaches on this team the quarterbacks as well out of training camp more so than going into training camp with the Improvement that they made and the additions to the roster so forth they made tremendous strives and shout out to this entire front office will mlay and his entire scouting Department you know Cowboys Nation seemingly is always looking for the Big Splash and free agency but they always do a really good job in terms of in the holes in this roster not always the way theid the way the fans want it to happen but they always feel the void and make sure they put a competitive team out there how about the this is the NFC East last year of course the Cowboys win the division it's been now 20 years since we've had a repeat winner in the NFC East going all the way back to 2004 and um the Cowboys and the Eagles a lot of people think it's a battle between those two but I know Isaiah you like uh what's the Washington has done of course they have Jaden Daniels at quarterback and you look at it as a wideopen race it's going to be a very competitive NFC East this year no doubt about it the Cowboys are always taking care of business and putting themselves at the top of that list but it's not going to be easy not by any means Philadelphia continues to find ways to improve their roster we all know the impact that Dan Quinn has on the culture of a team so he'll turn that a complete 180 out there in Washington and you never know what you're going to get with the Giants but they I'm sure they'll put out a good outfit as well we're under four minutes to play here and Tre Lance and the Cowboys down a touchdown and Tre Lance gets out of bounds has the first down using his feet again his Lance is up around 90 yards rushing on the afternoon now gets the first down and stops the clock doing you don't have to use your your timeouts obviously Dallas has three to have a few to spare there but why use it if you don't have to it's good play by Trey Lance just moving the chains 11 carries for 90 yards Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush quarterbacks one and two on the roster Jerry Jones did say this week that uh Trey Lance will be on the 53 but he wanted to see more of them he's getting an opportunity in this game to do that brevan span Ford the tight end out of Minnesota with the catch brevan span Ford you ever heard His Name a lot in this preseason but I got to tell you he had a really good training camp the coaches loved him so much so they gave him a pocket full of money and free agency to make sure that he came to Dallas so he's somebody that you have to keep an eye out for as they continue to solidify this roster on Tuesday um he's a big big fell 67 what 250 lbs somewhere around there 260 no disrespect there but they I know that Linda Wells tight ends coach loves him and what he can bring to the table again just another one of those guys who hasn't had opportunity to show what he's capable of in these games short completion there that's Alec holler another one of those tight ends a college free agent out of Central Florida Central Florida making an impact on this game yeah they are again another positive play know it's not the most exciting thing in the world but guess what the chains are moving in the right direction find your in a third and short situation the entire Playbook is open when you have this down in distance Lo down around 220 to play now a third down play Under Pressure fires downfield 50/50 ball and the Chargers come up with it and that is Matt henkins out of Iowa and Flower Mound Marcus High School right here in the Metroplex and Chargers brought more pressure again in a third and short situation they don't want to give Tre Lance opportunity to use his leg so they bring pressure Trey gives his man cam Johnson a and cam Johnson out of bounds you know the first team offense Dak Pres SC and crew they work on this every single day in practice absolutely you could play a great game a great game Bill and you get down to two minute and and and lay a egg then it was all for nothing so you have to make sure that this portion of the game is sealed tight Trey Lance is having his opportunity to show that he's capable of converting on these as well and over the middle brev span Ford that's a first down hold on to the football 44 yd line I told you that's a big dude bill that's a big man right there and the biggest difference too for the guys out there right now with a third string quarterback is the number of reps they've gotten in the two-minute offense is about yeah slim to none 199th of what the first team has got and there's nobody coming to get you to give you a breath from the sideline unless you get in goes incomplete let's go down to the sideline and Kyle y Kyle standing right in front of me at that last part I don't know if you guys heard the first part of that but Dak Prescott was just standing in front of me a moment ago he looked right back and he said he's winning it talking about Trey Lance and the confidence that he has in this moment in a two-minute drill to drive down the field all right Isaiah stanback said he he looked looked at me and said he's winning it too so he's having a really good drive right now they're already on opposite side of the 50 yard line with 40 seconds left and a timeout in their pocket now you don't want to waste too much time here get the guys at the line of scrimmage get the next play off third and three over the middle Alec holler mov the chains again and timeout called that's the Cowboys last timeout with 27 seconds left oh it's getting good bill I told you these coaches are going head to-head with the situational football good job this's just an uncovered route here in the slot right they vacate the hole you give it to them right there no need to sit back drop back go through your reads if he's open now give him the ball now get as many yards as you can get down so we can get this timeout call stop the clock now you have 27 seconds left no timeouts right but you're on the thir 30 Y Line 34 y4 yd line so look for the offense to try to work the sideline a little bit they're going to try to run some Corner routes most likely so you can catch the ball and get out of bounds the last thing you want to do is catch the ball and be inside inbounds because the clock keeps running from the 34 yd line L in trouble gets away now he'll throw it downfield and it's complete inbounds inside the 20 yd line to Snoop Conor got to spike it got to spike it gets to the line of scrimmage and Spike It 13 seconds 11 10 and Spike it at 7 seconds left nope you got enough time for two plays here okay if you're going to have a chance to catch the ball out of the shotgun take a shot at the end zone but understanding that the defense knows that as well so what are they going to do they're going to drop back in coverage and give up any play underneath okay A lot of times you'll come out again we might see it here where Defenders will put their heels along the goal line all the defensive backs will literally put their heels at the goal line and say hey anything in front of me is a win don't allow anybody behind me 7 seconds left from the 20yd line you see how far off the defensive backs are playing right now whistle before the snap timeout Los Angeles that is their second charge time out of a half 30 second timeout now they might have saw exactly what I was just talking about Bill right typically teams like to line up with their heels on the goal line so that they can keep everything in front of them they were not that far back so Jim Harbaugh might have saw it and say whoa whoa whoa you guys are playing too close to the line of scrimmage somebody can get behind you for the touchdown and ultimately put you in a situation where you might lose the ball game Mike McCarthy Brian shoten Heimer Scott tozen again tozen the quarterback coach has been calling plays throughout the day Cowboys Brain Trust though coming up with the plan here Trey Lance cannot hold the ball here he has to be very decisive with whatever he decides to do decision has to be made quickly they're going to give free releases they're going to back up and let these guys run off the line of scrimmage quickly down towards the end zone and it's picked off in the end zone and he had his man he had his man wide open right there cam Johnson it was just a he was looking for a hole into what we call the cover for defense once cam Johnson got up to the second level it's your man right here that you looking he's just going to try to run right across the middle here and the hole is right there that's the hole just a bad ball by Trey Lance they had it matth up the way they wanted to had the right route against the right coverage bad
