offense the averaged almost five yards per carry in the preseason but that was preseason exactly exactly but you're talking about the the worst Rush offense in the NFL the last two seasons so nowhere to go but up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and I like the approach that Liam Cohen brings in everything is going to look the same that is going to help Baker Mayfield in the play action pass component as well you'll hear a lot of comparisons to the Rams offense with this Buccaneers offense as Liam Cohen a sha McVey disciple out on the edge white tiptoeing down the sideline got a little extra yardage as he walked the tight rope near the 39 yd line Mike S is still knocks him out just a quick little screen you can see the three Re catcher for a running back third in the NFL last year as far as running backs with 549 receiving yards on Third and one off the play action Mayfield steps up and he overshoots Jaylen McMillan the rookie had a step but there is a flag down in the back field himself on that one he had an opportunity with Jaylen McMillan for a big play right there one-on-one coverage he's on top and just sailed it a little bit too far Jaylen McMillan that young rookie from Washington the Tampa Bay took in the third round they have been really excited about what they've seen from him in Camp and in the preseason from the 44 yd line on first down Godwin motioning Mayfield the check at the line commanders Rush five Mayfield finds the open man it's Godwin checked into the right play and Chris Godwin has a first down Benjamin St ju on the tackle the other big component about this offense from the Washington 45 on first down Mayfield the hand to White and Rashad white down to the 40 y line for this Washington defense they're looking for strength at each level from the defensive line to the linebackers and back to that safety spot yeah I know that we talk about the game in the NFL today as being played out on the edges out in space but the one thing here about this Washington defense you talk about strength down the middle it it is a clinic here Duron Payne Jonathan Allen inside Bobby Wagner a huge addition here for the commanders you're going to make sure that everybody's lined up a familiarity with Dan Quinn in the system from his days in Seattle even though which changed quite a bit and then Jeremy chin the safety on the back end he'll be up inside playing a lot of different positions former Carolina Panther coming over in free agency this year pitch play to White trying to get the edge he does a little toe tap and a good tackle around the ankles that's Quan Martin the other safety out there to make the tackle Tampa Bay on the move with a third and three coming up and this is something that Liam Cohen's hoping to break 20 consecutive games without an opening dve Drive touchdown the longest active streak in the NFL it makes things so hard when you don't get off to a good start and and your defense is always playing you know from behind it doesn't allow Todd BS to do the things that he wants to do defensively so it's kind of that double-edged sword where it gets you both ways where your offense is struggling and it puts your defense in a tough spot empty back field on Third and three commanders Rush four Mayfield targeting the sideline off the fingertips of Jaylen McMillan it would have been a walk-in touchdown instead McMillan can't snare it and it's Fourth and three yeah a couple of opportunities here on this opening drive for Baker Mayfield and Jaylen McMillan the first one's going to be on Baker he's making up for it here lays it out perfectly right there for Jaylen McMillan but he just can't complete the catch oh and McMillan knows it his first NFL touchdown just a fingertip away and now Chase mlin on for Johnston the first moments of Jaden Daniels NFL career in the regular season I am really excited to to see how he Embraces this day I mean you only get just wants your opportunity to start as a quarterback in the NFL you've heard everybody talk about it I I thought the conversation with Dan Quinn and getting to know the man I already saw the football player I got a good feel for what he's like as a football player but what is he going to be like as a man and you talk about the work ethic the leadership from a quarterback position you know the ability to process and see see those things develop I think those were the things that made Dan Quinn and the Washington commanders move him into that starting spot very quickly during the course of training camp Lade zakus in motion Daniels behind Robinson about backwards pass and Robinson will tip it out of bounds and it goes out at the 17 yd line Zion McCullum was in the area and Robinson just batted it out of bounds but a loss on the play of all the way back to the 17 yd line you can see Brian Robinson coming down the line definitely a backwards pass he's going towards the eight it's back or the 22 it's back to the 21 so and un ceremony his first play for Jaden Daniels to start his career mark it at the 15 yd line a loss on the playback of 15 yds mcaffrey out of the back field the toss to Robinson the running back out near the 19 yd line and let's talk about this Washington offense when you look at this offense we obviously talk about Jaden Daniels but Terry mclen you know is the number one ride receiver he's as consistent as it gets where do you find number two and number three in that one that's the big question and with offensive coordinator cliff kingsberry and the offense that he wants you're going to need multiple receivers so who steps forward and takes that number two spot during the course of the Season we'll have to wait and see there third down and 21 fourman pressure Daniels can run can he run for 21 no he cannot ushered out of bounds by Jamal Dean and the errant backwards pass threw off the entire tener of that opening drive yeah I I think it's a fine line that you walk you know Cliff kingsberry said I I want to get him off to a comfortable start give him some easy completions to start the game and that that first play is exactly that it's just a little swing pass that should be an easy completion it turns into a backward pass put you behind the eightball on your opening drive so a three and out for walk Washington trese to punt it away to Trey Palmer Palmer sizes it up at the different is is that position right there there's not been an EXT receiver in that system that has the skills that Mike Evans has it's going to be really fun to watch him and see how of he's in one-on ones here's Rashad white looks up and sees a lot of commanders jerseys and a defense that was the worst defense in the NFL last year does a good job Heming up white throws him for a one- yard loss well that was definitely not going to be the case this year there there's no way that Joe wit and Dan Quin are going to allow this defense to play at the level they played at last season and and in a lot of those those rankings they really really struggle points being the worst in in the NFL so a lot of change it's going to be different and and these guys have really embraced it I mean the guys that that have been there in the past that are now working in this new system have really enjoyed have been very vocal about the enthusiasm that all the coaches bring to practice that Dan Quinn defense in Dallas last three years top 10 each year in scoring defense Mayfield to the sideline almost intercepted Benjamin St juice full extension looking for his first pick of the Season really nice job with your eyes on the quarterback Benjamin St juice right here lot of cushion right there he's just going to watch that develop as soon as he sees Trey Palmer break to the outside he's jumping that route did everything perfect except finishing it with the catch had 17 pass defenses a year ago a career high off to a good start today and on Third and 11 a stoppage and a flag 12 men defense 5yd penalty still third down unforced error turns third and 11 into third and six yeah even though it's week one those are penalties that you shouldn't have here that that that's something that Joe wit Dan Quinn they're they're not going to be happy with a situation like that mistakes within your own control regardless it's it's week one or not and you're kind of still getting some of the the things sorted out that that's just basic fundamental football right there you should know when you got 11 or 12 on the field second Washington penalty already on third down today first one gave Tampa Bay a first third and six Mayfield pocket collap in late but he finds his favorite Target Mike Evans first Down and Out of Bounds at the Washington 21 yd line again it's just going to be fun to watch Mike Evans in this offense and this is a great throw you clear it out down through you can see the player running through there that leaves that outside of the field opened up he beats Quan Martin to the [Applause] outside two catches 37 yds already for Evans first and 10 at the 21 we're good we're good McMillan in motion and the give is to cam Johnson and Johnson out of Barton College making his NFL debut the rookie from division 2 Barton and they are really high on this young man who found out he made the 53 man roster Daryl when he was on Twitter now known as X and saw wasn't on the cut list I'm not cut that means I must have a spot and I think probably you know the greatest compliment that I've heard so far about Cameron Johnson and what he could become is from Tom Moore the longtime coach in the NFL day two he saw him in practice that that kid is special there's Godwin with blockers in front shrugs off contact flag is down as Godwin is down all the way to the Washington 7 but what about the flag will it be backing the Buccaneers up B vidovich our referee during the Run holding office number 10 10yd penalty repeat second down Trey Palmer backing up the Buccaneers there's Trey Palmer right there in your screen hands on the outside but you're good right there now as that player starts to break you got to let him go you got to let him go now you can see the arm extended so even though you're kind of outside the framework of the body you were okay at the beginning of that but as soon as you start to lose that player just got to let him go second down and 15 after the penalty back to the 26 yd line of [Applause] Washington Mayfield pressure up the middle in trouble able to break free Baker Mayfield on the scr and he gets positive yardage a two yd gain on the play as Bobby Wagner there to finish him off donon Payne almost had it here's donon Payne right here up front he's the one that's going to win real quick against Cody ma right there coming right up the middle that that's the hardest thing for a quarterback right you're going through your steps and you drop you want to put that back foot down and get ready to throw and here comes D pay number 94 right into your face he been as steady as you can get as a as a start in Washington since 2019 third down and 13 Mayfield pocket collapsing again breaks free once more Mayfield room to run Baker Mayfield in space and tossed down his former teammate for the 5 minutes he was with the Rams drops him down at the 16 yd line with the tackle yeah so again it it's just the pressure that that this Washington front is bringing on Baker Maybe it's been impressive here to start the game and again this is an offensive line that for Tampa Bay they could they worked on it they they brought in some guys to to beef up especially you talk about the interior and that's going to be the big matchup here today when you're talking about Ben Brenson Graham Barton and Cody ma inside against Jonathan Allen and Don pay chase mclin looking for his second field goal of the day this one from 34 and he's two for two in this young season a 6 nothing lead for the that's one of the reasons that Baker Mayfield was so excited about this offense there wasn't the learning curve you normally have when a new OC comes in he knew what Liam Cohen was looking for even though he' had just a short taste of it in his time in Los Angeles and now Jaden Daniels to work his second series the first one of forgettable series for the rookie quarterback Yami Brown in motion and the hand off up the middle that's Brian Robinson pushing it the pile to the 32 yd line and for the first time in 2024 at least for us we get the check in for a game break with Carissa Thompson thanks keev well guess what Dak Prescott's having a good day on and off the field now the highest paid player in the NFL finds Brandon Cooks for his first touchdown of the day Cowboys on top 73 over the Browns ke good start for Dak Prescott all the way around second down at eight Daniels going to run and he can do this just fine Daniels scrambling for his first first down as an NF FL quarterback Anquan Winfield there to track him down yeah and I thought it was it was funny it's one of the biggest question marks about Jaden Daniels game is this play right here is he going to slide is he going to take on the defender and he's going to be smart enough to know when is the right time to try and take on a Defender do I do I have an opportunity to get the first down am I going to be able to extend the drive get a touchdown he's going to be very selective when he opts to finish the run you see right there it's not comfortable for him at all he he does not slide well and you know that was one of the big things you go back to LSU last season and he took a couple of big hits and Robinson on first down going nowhere let's check in downstairs with Laura Oakman and Terry mcclaren's excited to see Jaden Daniels in his backfield we're going to continue what Daryl was talking about because Terry told me it's his 10th quarterback and he said it's natural intuition for these quarterbacks to come in and want to put on the cape He said Each guy comes in they want to light the world on fire which is why building a team around round Jaden is so important saying if we don't make him feel it has to carry the whole load it allows him to continue to grow more reps more reps and critical situations let the maturation develop naturally Don't Force It On Second and 11 good toss to one of those guys that can help him the tight end Zack hers his 124th consecutive game with a catch but it's been the injury bug the last two years only 17 games the last two years for SS and that'll be the big question mark through the course of the season for Zack SS and for the commanders can he stay healthy and you know hopefully that's in the rearview mirror because I I think he's ideal it it sounds cliche but to have a guy like Zack her is a rookie quarterback with Jaden Daniels and if you can build that chemistry and develop that and know exactly how he sees things he's a great opportunity for you to get out of trouble when the play breaks down really a great security blanket to have that veteran of tight end third and four Daniels pumps field is open he will take it running for a first down into Tampa territory tiptoeing on the sidelines and he caught the sideline Out of Bounds at the Tampa 36 17 yd Scamper ymy brown right there Austin Eckler out of the back field they set it up for maccaffrey blockers in front of the screen but well defended by Tampa Bay Zion McCollum just broke through all those blockers to bring down the rice rookie Luke mcaffrey that's saw that speed that Todd BS was excited about his defense he said he's never seen his defense this fast since he he's been here in Tampa Bay and a lot of that has to do nice job by Zion McCollum right there breaking up that play and one of the areas they struggled against last year was against the pass so if they compare a good pass defense with what's been an excellent run defense look out speaking of that run defense Robinson picks his way for a couple and there's one of the more prolific tacklers in the history of the National Football League first time we've gotten to call the name of lante David Bobby Wagner Levante David two leading tacklers right now in the NFL same draft class Senior Bowl roommates when they went down to mobile good friends you know they're competing against each other on their SS everything starts there third down Daniels floats it out on the sideline open is Robinson he's got a first down spins off contct the flag is down as so Robinson goes down at the 11 yd line McCollum had a chance at him Washington that dates back to about 2021 can he be the guy York's field goal is no good wide to the right and the commanders it it's it's Paramount and you look around the league you look at the teams that have a good kicker and you're Crossing Midfield when you have a big leg kicker that's got that accuracy and it's something that the commanders have struggled with for years now at Le since they released Dustin Hopkins back in 2021 midseason First Carry for Bucky Irving highly touted rookie from Oregon they picked him up in the fourth round and at the 45 yd line he's tripped ush shington off
