2024 Preseason AP Top 25 Poll Released ! | 2024 College Football

Intro hey lifers Dustin here this is college football lifer where we talk about the past present and future of college football and a couple of days ago the pre-season AP Poll for 2024 was released and I want to go through that in this video not really saying whether a think teams are too high or too low we don't know that yet I personally don't really believe in a preseason poll though I appreciate it it gives us something to talk about it gives us rankings in the first week of games so I'm always a fan of it but I personally do not release a preseason poll because I we don't know you know Michigan was preseason 5 in 2007 and lost App State at home so we we really don't know but I do want to talk a little bit about the history of this in this video so we're going to start at the bottom with number 25 work our way up to number one which is Georgia is the preseason number one and I want to give a little bit of historical context for each team the preseason AP Top 25 Poll which debuted back in 1950 so a lot of these teams have made a lot of appearances in this poll some of them not as much and I just kind of think that's a little interesting so this is kind of a refresher so it's a little bit of a historical perspective on where these teams have started in the poll uh how they finished last season and their first opponent this year so let's get started with number 25 and I do want to apologize I don't know if you can hear it or not but my AC in my apartment just doesn't stop running uh even if I turn it off because my apartment complex sucks so they just haven't fixed it in 3 days so my AC is just going hopefully you can't hear it too much in the video but if the audio is off that's why Iowa starting off at number 25 the Iowa Hawkeyes 10-4 last year 7-2 in the Big 10 dropping one spot from the final uh AP postseason poll of 2023 they were the Big 10 West Champs lost the Citrus Bowl they are starting ranked for the sixth time in 9 years this is their 28th preseason AP ranking and they will be taking on Illinois State at noon eastern time on the Big 10 Network all the times I mentioned here are going to be eastern time and if I don't mention a specific day just kind of assume it is Saturday August 31st which is week one number 24 NC State NC State 9 and4 last year 6-2 in the ACC they dropped three spots they lost the Pop-Tarts Bowl to Kansas State this is their eighth preseason ranking but second in three years they will take on Western Carolina Thursday August 9th at 7:00 on the ACC Network number 23 USC 8 and5 last year 5-4 in the Pack 12 of course making the move to the Big 10 this year they move into the rankings uh noticeably absent in the final AP ranking last year they won the Holiday Bowl this is their 62nd preseason ranking third most in the country uh only missed the preseason rankings twice this Century in 2001 and 2019 they open up against number 13 LSU in Las Vegas 7:30 Sunday September 1st on ABC number Kansas 22 Kansas 9 and4 last year 5- four in the Big 12 moving up one spot from their final ranking last year what a world where Kansas debuts in the preseason AP poll in football ahead of USC wild times uh they won the Guaranteed Rate Bowl last year this is only their seventh preseason ranking and their first since 2009 so welcome back to the preseason rankings Jayhawks they open up the season against Lynden wood from the FCS Thursday August 29th at 8:00 on ESPN plus this game will be at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City Kansas as their stadium is being renovated this season number 21 is the Arizona Wildcats 10 and three last year 7-2 in the Pack 12 they dropped 10 spots from their number 11 final ranking last year of course moving to the Big 12 they beat Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl this is their 11th pre season ranking and their first trip into this poll at the beginning of the year since 2015 they take on New Mexico at 10:30 on ESPN number 20 Texas Texas AM A&M Aggie 7- six last year 4-4 in the SEC they did not finish the season ranked uh Texas A&M constantly ranked in the preseason poll I I don't understand it year after year after year a lot of expectations there and they especially under the Jimbo Fisher era did not follow through with that they lost the Texas Bowl this is their 35th top 25 ranking in sixth straight somehow they take on number seven Notre aame at 7:30 on ABC Miami number 19 the Miami Hurricane seven- six last year three and five in the ACC losing record in conference getting uh a number 19 spot in the AP pole here they were not ranked at the final poll last year they lost the Pinstripe Bowl this is their 34th preseason ranking but third and fourth year fourth years third and four years and they travel to Florida at 3:30 on ABC number 18 Kansas Kansas State State 9-4 last year 6 and3 in the Big 12 they won the Pop-Tarts Bowl they are also staying put uh they finished 18 last year start 18 this year this is their 14th preseason ranking and second straight they take on UT Martin at 7 o' on ESPN plus number 17 Oklahoma State Oklahoma State 10-4 last year 7-2 in the Big 12 dropping one spot they lost the Big 12 championship game but had a Texas Bowl win over Texas A&M this is their 12th preseason ranking they're ninth under Mike Gundy which is crazy uh to see how much history he has actually put in this uh University his Alma moer since he's taken over his head coach they open up the season and good luck to you Cowboys against number one South Dakota State at 2:00 on ESPN plus that game should absolutely be on broadcast television uh huge upset alert by the two-time defending FCS national champion Jack Rabbits just ahead of them like it Oklahoma always seems to be number 16 Oklahoma their bedum Rivals they went 10 and3 last year the Sooners did s-2 in the Big 12 dropping one spot they of course make the uh Monumental move to the SEC here this season they lost the Alamo Bowl this is their 66th preseason ranking second most in the country and 25th straight they have been in every single preseason AP Top 25 Poll since the year 2000 when they won their National Championship or their last National Championship that's the second longest streak in the country they open up the season Friday August 30th against Temple at 7:00 on ESPN number 15 the Tennessee Tennessee Volunteers 9-4 last year 4-4 in the SEC they move up two spots after winning the citus bowl over Iowa 35 to nothing this is their 44th preseason ranking and they open against instate FCS team Chattanooga at 12:45 on the SEC network Clemson number 14 Clemson 9 and4 last year 4-4 in the ACC they move up six spots they won the Gator Bowl against Kentucky in a thriller 3835 this is their 34th preseason ranking 13th straight which is all credit to the program that dbo has built in Clemson they open up the season against number one Georgia in Atlanta the highest ranked team Clemson has ever opened the season against that is ABC at noon they they will be playing in the mercedesbenz stadium the Falcons stadium LSU in Atlanta number 13 LSU 10-3 last year 6-2 in the the SEC they Dro one spot from their final ranking they did win the reliaquest bowl against Wisconsin 35-31 this is their 43rd preseason ranking the only year they have not been ranked in this preseason poll since 2001 was 2022 two years ago uh they open up against number 23 USC Las Vegas or in Las Vegas ABC 7:30 on Sunday the 1st Utah number 12 Utah 8 and5 5- four in the Pack 12 they move into the rankings uh with with some healthy people coming back into uh the lineup last year they lost the Las Vegas Bowl of course moving to the Big 12 this season this is only their eighth preseason ranking but their sixth straight they open up at home against Southern Utah on Thursday August 29th at 9:00 on ESPN plus number 11 Missouri Missouri with the best season in about 15 years last year uh they were 11-2 6-2 in the SEC they dropped three spot uh from their final ranking but they did beat Ohio State 14 to3 in the Cotton Bowl this is their 11th preseason ranking but first since 2015 they open up the season Thursday August 29th against Murray State at 8:00 on the SEC Florida State network moving into the top 10 now you have Florida State 13-1 last year 8-0 in the ACC pretty notably the ACC champions from last year did not make the playoff they did beat Louisville 16 to6 in the ACC Championship rather but lost the orange Bowl 63-3 against Georgia they kind of had a skeleton crew in that game they dropped four spots from their final ranking last year this is their 42nd preseason ranking and 26th in the top 10 this is the second straight year for both of those streaks to continue and they open the season on August 24th week zero at noon Eastern Time on ESPN against Georgia Tech that game in Dublin Michigan Ireland number nine Michigan you're defending national champions dropping all the way down to number nine dropping eight spots 15-0 9-0 in the Big 10 last year 10 if you count that win in the championship game over Iowa 26 to nothing they won the national championship against Washington and beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl this is their 54th preseason ranking and 38th in the top 10 third straight season they debut in the top 10 they take on Fresno State at 7:30 on NBC number eight Penn State Penn State 10 and3 last year 7-2 in the Big 10 they move up five spots in their final ranking last year they did lose the Peach Bowl but this is their 50th preseason ranking 28th debut in the top 10 second straight year for that and they travel to Morgantown to take on West Virginia at Big noon on Fox number Notre Dame seven Notre Dame 10 and three last year moving up seven spots from their final ranking they won the Sun Bowl against Oregon State this is their 61st preseason ranking and 37th debut in the top 10 seventh straight top 25 preseason ranking by the way and they open up the season season at number 20 Texas A&M at 7:30 on ABC number six Old Miss 11-2 last year great season All Things Considered six and2 in the SEC they move up three spots after their win in the Peach Bowl against Penn State 38-25 this is the rebels 21st preseason ranking and 12th debut in the top 10 this is their third straight uh preseason AP Top 25 ranking and their first debut in the top 10 since 2009 they host my Ferman paladins at 7:00 on the SEC network plus moving into the top Alabama five now and it's just familiar face after familiar face starting with the most familiar pH you have the Alabama Crimson Tide 12-2 last year 8-0 in the SEC they won the SEC Championship game against Georgia 27 to 24 before losing the semi-final in the Rose bold Michigan in overtime they stay put with their final five ranking from last year this is the TI's 58th preseason ranking 43rd in the top 10 and 34th in the top five the 16th straight season that the tide has debuted in the top five going all the way back to the first couple of Sav Seasons their number five debut ranking in this this season's poll is the lowest they've had since 2008 insane uh they take on Western Kentucky at 7:00 on ESPN and the Kalin dor era officially begins number four is a team that beat Alabama last year in the Texas Longhorns 12-2 8-1 in the Big 12 they dropped one spot of course moving to the SEC this year they beat Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship to win the league in their final season in it and lost to Washington in the Sugar Bowl semi-final game 37-31 this is the LongHorn's 57th preseason ranking 35th in the top 10 and 25th in the top five they open up the season against Colorado State at 3:30 on ESPN number three is the Oregon Ducks Oregon receiving one first place vote they were 12-2 last year 8-1 the Pack 12 moving up three spots uh they lost the Pack 12 championship game to Washington the only team to actually beat them last year they won the Fiesta Bal against Liberty 45-6 in their final year in the Pack 12 they moved to the Big 10 this year 21st preseason ranking eighth in the top 10 and just the fifth in the top five the first time they've done that since the Marcus Mariota years of 2014 they open up the season at home against Idaho at 7:30 on the Big 10 Network weird number Ohio State two is the Ohio State Buckeyes receiving 15 first place votes Buckeyes were 11-2 last year 8-1 in the Big 10 that lost being of course to Michigan a hump they can no longer seem to get over they move up eight spots from their final top 10 ranking last year after losing the Cotton Bowl this is their 71st preseason ranking the most in the country 49th top 10 ranking and 33rd in the top five they have been ranked in the top 25 preseason poll every single year since 1989 the last time the Buckeyes were not ranked was 1988 and there was only a top 20 back then that's how long it's been since they did not they did not debut in the AP Top 25 this is the Buckey's 12th straight top 10 debut and eighth straight in the top five they open up the season against akan at 3:30 on CBS Georgia and last but most I guess is the number one ranked Georgia Bulldogs coming in with 46 first place votes they were 13-1 last year 8-0 in the SEC moving up three spots in their final four ranking they did lose the SEC Championship game and probably should have gotten the playoff in a lot of people's eyes uh I certainly think they were probably one of the four best teams at least by ey test they beat Florida State 63 to3 in the Orange Bowl this is the Bulldog's 43rd preseason ranking 18th in the top 10 10th in the top five their 23rd straight season being ranked in this preseason poll that they are have been such a sneaky consistent team since 2002 their first year in this streak here this is their seventh straight debut in the top five and the top 10 they open up against number 14 Clemson at noon on ABC in Atlanta the teams dropping out of last year's final uh 2023 postseason poll is number two Washington number 19 Louisville number 22 SMU and number 25 Liberty Washington you know losing Michael pinnix and roma dun and kayin dor dropping from number two finishing as the runner up for the national championship and then dropping all the way out of the top 25 is a little crazy to me I think uh next five up as far as the five highest vote Getters were Louisville Virginia deck Boise State SMU and Iowa State uh interesting note here Wisconsin's seven-year preseason ranking streak is broken they did receive 15 votes in this poll but for the first time in eight years Wisconsin is not in the preseason top 20 as far as the conference breakdown you have the SEC leading all with nine the Big 10 with six the Big 12 with five the ACC with four and Notre Dame uh there's just less spots to go around here there is no group of five teams ranked in the preseason poll four of the first six are SEC teams and the Big 10 and the SEC make up eight of the top 10 uh it's just getting more and more crowded at the top here with the big two conferences and with the power four now for just a Historical Rankings little bit of historical analysis here if you want to look at the top 15 or so uh rankings here of the most appearances in the preseason AP pole by team in top five rankings Oklahoma has 39 that is the most if a team is green it means that they are active for this year so it actually ticked up one for this year the top five in the top five rankings is Oklahoma Alabama Ohio State Texas and USC with Michigan and Notre Dame just missing USC there uh with 20 votes VES Georgia moving up to number 12 to tie with LSU and then you have a three-way tie at number 14 there with auburn pin State and Tennessee as far as the Top 10 rankings Ohio state Alabama Michigan Notre Dame Texas Penn State and Florida State all moved up one Texas's top 10 ranking this year breaks a previous tie with Nebraska who just keeps sliding down this list here and the top 25 rankings you have the top eight all being included here again as well as number 10 Tennessee number 11 Georgia and LSU in a tie at 43 appearances and Florida State with 42 just Nebraska Auburn and Florida from that list not being ranked in this preseason poll so Outro there you have it the preseason AP poll is out here's some a little bit of historical analysis from that kind of get you caught up with where some of the teams finished last over the last 10 or 15 years an unranked team in the preseason Poll finished in the top 10 who do you think that could be this year last year it was Missouri I think so right Missouri finish so they
