Were Williams wrong to drop Logan Sargeant + MONZA PREVIEW | Nailing The Apex

Tim rainy we are just it feels like minutes away from Monza although it's uh practice starts tomorrow uh we already have a car in the wall though and we'll talk about that in a second first though I I I wanted to say this I saw this on Twitter and I just thought you would find this kind of fun uh are you a fan of Star Wars uh okay but depends what Star Wars we're talking about here like original Star Wars yeah yeah yeah okay original Star Wars okay we're good to go there uh uh there was a uh a tweet today with Star Wars Outlaws video game launching today did you know that the Millennium Falcons complex surface is covered with and this is from Tamia UK uh Tamia kit parts from F1 cars tanks and aircraft Parts uh from a the Ferrari 312b and a McLaren F1 M23 we're a part we're a part of the uh the original Millennium Falcon that's awesome Isn't that cool I I was like holy I didn't know that that's great how the hell did they pull that off cuz like I wonder how they would get the the parts from those cars I know I don't know it could have been that they were pulling from them like after the season was over or something like that but I just thought uh I just thought that was neat that's awesome yeah like that that's incredible yeah no like I look I I love the Star Wars lore I guess uh you would call it I think like once we got to like the prologues I guess are called like you know the three episodes that happened before like original Star Wars Empire prequels yeah prequels prequels sorry yeah once we got to there I was like I'm out you you were out I didn't really find them like that that great you know what I mean like it I mean the last one obviously was was pretty cool I guess heer yeah where he becomes Vader but um I don't know man like I like the the first one was okay okay well if you like kind of cool Darth Maul was cool um uh those those those prequels were loved and then hated and now they're loved again and uh if you really want to throwback Star Wars feel you got to watch Rogue one yeah okay I liked Rogue one yeah I went to the theaters and saw that that that that felt like you know that feels like original Star Wars right yeah yeah and then are they making a movie like Andor is that the movie or TV show the Andor TV show is spectacular it's actually one of the best because it's about the Rebellion but it's raw and it's dark and it's not like lights sabery and explosions or whatever it's very um it's it's there are times where it's like a a bit of a a mental like the control that a government can have on its people kind of stuff it's like oh my there's a prison thing you got to see that um they're making a second season of it stellen Skarsgard is in the original and he's so good in it got a monologue that's so unbelievable and it's amazing and then um Andor season 2 is coming out and then they've got the Mandalorian series which I've actually really really enjoyed it's a little bit more of like a spaghetti western sort of feel and they are doing a movie on that okay so I've seen those they're great yeah um I've I haven't seen Andor yet I wanted to I have it saved on the the app but I never gotten around to watching it you'll like it you'll like it a lot all right I'll check it out I'll check it out there are there are some that are like I have to say the the the newest one which Disney I think is already distancing itself from the acolyte um there was some really good elements to it there okay it just I felt like the whole show should have been a side plot for a bigger story um you know sometimes like you watch something you're like this is a little thin that's how it felt to me but um but yeah so uh they they have some hits and misses that's there's no question um it's it's you know being a McLaren fan I know all about hits and misses uh being a Leaf's fan I know a lot about misses uh Star Wars they have some hits they have some misses so anyway uh uh so so Tim first first thing I want to talk to you about because you have driven this track Monza is Legend people love this track uh but uh today obviously we had a crash and it was the uh Aston Martin aramco safety car um and it was uh I guess Aston Martin is investigating the cause but confirmed that the driver and passenger are okay it's on they said it was at the Alberto Corner which was previously known I think as parabolica you've driven the track uh what's that quarter like what can happen to you there and how do how can you get a little squirely Adam it's parabolica to me and I I feel like it always will be parabolica like once you go in there on the limit it feels like par feels like it should be called parabolica yes cuz like you don't know what's going to happen on the way out but that's back in the day when there wasn't um as much runoff as there is now um there was a there was a ton of gravel used to be there and if you just dump a wheel and that was it forget about it there you know is some gravel there now but there is also like some pavement runoff but the FIA did actually message me before uh we went on to record um and they had said that Aston Martin is investigating the cause but they confirmed that both the drivers uh and passenger were fine additional safety car is an additional safety car at the circuit won't impact the weekend at all um I think just interesting to note that this is just a note simply that the drivers complained about uh some of the safety cars being too slow last year uh in years previous and so they've kind of Juiced up the cars a bit more um so they can Garner a bit more Pace uh adding over probably like over a 100 BHP to the cars but uh that being said uh you know it's good to see that both you know burn maer and whoever Bernard maer and whoever else was with him uh got out okay I mean I've seen some of the pictures of the car is absolutely destroyed oh yeah so happy that like everybody's all right and walked away from that one because that's a fast Corner ad I'm like it's really fast you're coming off of like a really long straightaway heading into like uh a I don't want to call it like you have to downshift for it um you have to break a bit as well but it's kind of like one of those things that you're doing it at such a high speed such a high level and there's not like a you don't really want to break hard like it's kind of like an ease break to get this sort of car just to rotate a bit into the turn and then you're kind of going down I don't know what they would be going down in the Aston Martin I remember it was like I think we were going from like 8 gear to seventh or sixth if I can remember correctly and so you were you doing stick uh both actually I had to do two different types of gear boxes for for that um not that weekend but throughout the time that I was there interesting stuff man oh yeah I think it's so cool that you drove that track Tim so that's so cool yeah yeah I I love this track it's one of my favorite just how the top speeds I think like one of the biggest things uh for me was probably the breaking zones and trying to like navigate how deep you can go before you're basically heading off track I think one of the fun things about the track that I really really loved is just like the curbs like curb hopping um at that track is was great I had so much fun uh and then also the chicane that's at the back of the track so just before parabolica that thing is badass man because it's fast trying to get the car trying to hustle the car through there and to watch an F1 car uh go through there is is like it's another another level it's incredible but it it's love it's crazy when you when you think about how fast that pace car is going because it looks so slow when you see compare it to the Formula 1 cars right you see it on TV and you're like man this guy's just got out for a pleasure cruise but he's really driving like those PA cars are no joke um so I guess they were warming up today and it just didn't go very well but I'm sure Aston Martin can lend them another yeah usually what happens with um Thursday's Adam is pace car medical car do a lot of like installation laps and hot laps uh to kind of make sure all of the FIA systems are working making sure all the timing and scoring is accurate um TV cameras as well everything is in the right place and then also like making sure the track and the safety parameters around it are are good I mean clearly they are here yeah but um yeah no it's uh I I just I think I I love the track so much because Adam because of its history right like there's just so much history there and if you've never been it is definitely a race that I I would recommend like going to and just trying to get out to the uh the banking that's out there I don't when you watch it on TV and you see the helicopter shot yeah you'll see that there's like like a circle like a half circle in the distance depending they're shooting it from mhm um but there are basically like ovals and Bings and like getting out there to like see that is was was so cool in the times in the time that I got to do it um and try to get to the top of the banking because the banking on him is just crazy how like honestly man it's hard to like run up it right of course oh man yeah I can't wait to I can't wait one day I'm going to go but just to think like how like the cars they used to race on that Banking and like oh man like if something were to happen like they probably did like unbelievable man absolutely absolutely now uh big news this week that that broke basically right after we released our last show which is just so freaking convenient is uh uh Williams Racing uh finally made the move this had been something uh with long Logan sergeant that had been um rumored for a long time and there were conversations about potentially uh Liam Lawson being lent uh there was possible um Alpine Mercedes driver uh MC Shumacher uh was potentially in there for that and we'll we talk a little about MC Shumacher a little bit later too but at the end of the day it made more sense apparently for Williams to go with the guy they did and that is Franco kapino uh of Argentina and I think it's perfect because uh Argentinian racing fans are bananas uh sometimes good sometimes not uh but the Williams blue matches it perfectly matches the flags perfectly so I'm sure they'll be thrilled about that what do you know about this driver Tim why did they go with him and not get like a Liam Lawson or Mick Shoemaker oh you know apparently like Lawson was sort of the first a driver they were interested in going for I think you know from my understanding and folks who I've talked to like Mick Schumacher was really pushed in there as well which is uh you know I that's a topic we can discuss in a in a bit as to like well why why go for Franco kapino when you had you know Mick Schumacher waiting in the wings who could have done it um I also think he had some scheduling conflicts as well at the same time but to to to talk about you know Franco kapino you know this driver who's part of the Williams driver Academy he's tested the car before you know Formula 2 right now he's okay he's doing okay um and then obviously had a you know decent you know rookie like Junior career like pretty decent I think there's also a bit of a financial situation with this one as well at the same time I think he's getting you know there is some backing from um Argentinian backers who are paying for some of this ride at Williams not like all the whole thing but I think there is some money involved um so it allows them to save real dollars yeah I can't really you know go out and confirm that that's what it is but that's what I've heard seen and read so I think having this young driver in the car at this moment if it's your best option I guess you kind of have to take it it is disappointing to see them move on from from Logan and maybe not allow him to finish the rest of the season I mean granted they don't want any car more car damage but and is that what did him in ah I think so I think it's just the amount of damage that he had caused over this season but I don't even like and then you got to think about well okay well how much damage did Alex cause too right he had a he bined a car like bined a car tubbed a car in Australia like tubbed it it was done so there's that I mean it's yeah it's a shame really Adam I think I would have liked to have seen them at least let Logan finish the season out but I mean if they feel that he's not getting the job done and they feel that Franco can do a better job then they've got to make that switch which which they have it'll be a good spot for for Franco to start off I wouldn't want to do this in like Baku or Singapore like those two races complicated tight tracks yeah roads courses you know and those two races are still to come so it's a good spot for him to get his feet wet to get an understanding I think for him it's going to be about building up into the weekend and that's going to be crucial for him so I think for Williams that has to be what his goals and objectives are each session just get a little bit quicker and then when it comes time to qualify and go and and see what you can do sorry I didn't mean to cut you off there I I um you know I think people forget with Logan sergeant that he was not James Val's pick this was a yast capito pick uh at the end of uh the season a couple of years ago22 yeah 2022 when when uh um Nicholas T was going to move on and I think the um I think it surprised a lot of people Logan sergeant and they you know it's interesting in the in the press release um they did say they will continue to support his racing career I don't think they said that to say like oh we're g to root him on like they're financially supporting he was a Williams young driver what do you think that Arrangement is that is stuff that none of us know I mean I would I can assume that maybe it's financially they pay out his deal I I don't know or that would be the only thing I could guess um I think for for Logan you know it that was a that was a big ask you know to get him into that car for 2023 I know where the car was in 2022 and like it wasn't it wasn't good like it that was a you know horrible car I mean stories that you know I've heard are just gosh I mean yeah anyways then you have James come onto the scene and you know like you had said Adam Logan wasn't his pick it was Yos capito's pick and I think it was just a little too early for him to make that step into Formula 1 but like we've said in this podcast before I mean when Formula 1 calls you got to you got to answer the Bell like it's there's only so many opportunities that you going to get and for Logan who knows that may have been his only opportunity he was ever going to get his F2 season was going quite well actually I think if he had a stuck in F2 for another season he would have been in contention for a championship there and then we would have seen right but it could have been like you know jugovic as well right like wins the F2 championship and then what he's not doing anything right now right he's a reserve driver for ason Martin so it's hard to say what would have happened for Logan if he had have stuck with Formula 2 for another season but I mean man like it's it's uh was a tough tough ask for sure to throw him in there put him up against Alex Alban with no formul one experience and yeah say keep up with this guy I mean and I also think it also never had the same car right like it was Alex got the upgrades right yeah exactly I mean I don't think Logan Logan didn't even have the same equipment that Alex did I think until probably I want to say and this isn't accurate Silverstone like it may not be a fact that it was Silverstone but from my understanding it was but even then still wasn't like the car still wasn't 100% the same as Alex's uh so you know that makes things difficult as well I mean it's uh yeah difficult position he was he was put in for sure I mean it's uh but that's formula one right I mean it is and I think it's something that William um which they are rightly taking on the chin right now I think it's something that they want to avoid in the future hence the Carlos signs signing yes uh signing Alex Alan long term the chaos has got to go it's been chaotic there for way too long and it's been like a decade of chaos like really really bad they haven't seen a pod except for George Russell's Podium you know they really haven't seen a a real raced Podium you know I think since vry Bolas like it's not uh that's right it's not a great it's not been great and so uh as much as this doesn't look good on them or people are mad or whatever it is and I think that Williams are trying to take the steps to be um a a steady uh racing outfit with a bright future and I think they're going to get there but I think we got to get to the end of the season right just think just been a disaster year you didn't have you know as you said Alban tubbed the car they didn't have a backup they had to take Logan's car like it's just you know bad stuff all the way around but I think these are the growing pains they have to go to to get to where they need to be yeah um so ultimately you know okay so they they bring in this guy and what do you expect from a guy like kapino like like what can you really expect from this guy the rest of the way no I think Adam you put everything quite well because it's what what are you expecting from him I mean he's a rookie he's not he's done like a free practice session done a bunch of sim work like is he going to outperform Logan like what what are we doing yeah exactly that's the thing right one of one of the other points I wanted to make was the fact that like is he going to be a step up from from Logan is he going to be able to get points where Logan couldn't I mean obviously Logan only had one point but like I mean let's be real like what what's this learning curve G to look like for Franco and is is he being put in the best position for him I think you're right in saying that this is basically going to be it and the next duration of this driver program and team is going to be under 100% James FS where it's Carlos SS Alex Alan getting your factory up to speed and getting this team back on the right track because uh I think in the same way you do with this team where it comes to um for James to just make it his own this is what he I guess this is the direction that he feels he has to go in but I think when we get to next season I mean this team I think is going to be really solid yeah I I agree I think they got a really bright future Tim I think especially with those Tech regulations changing in 26 I think they've they they figured out last year the straight line speed of that car uh it's still got balance issues it still doesn't Corner well but if they could figure out a little bit of that you know this coming season it might be nice for them to to be a mid pack finisher A fifth or a sixth next year and yeah you know they had that big upgrade that they brought to sort and hearing from Alex Alan on Thursday so today it sounds like they still have a few balance issues with the car and they don't necessarily have the straight line speed that they did last season uh the the upgrade that was introduced in xanor was to help with bringing more load to the car so more downforce but when you start to increase the downforce you start to inter interrupt the balance issues that the car can have because of that so they have another iteration of upgrades that will be coming uh in a few races time that'll help sort the balance issues with with the car in particular so I think they've I think they've like chipped away at this thing and have introduced uh a good upgrade I think they just need to start ironing it out finding the finer details and that'll set them up for a better 2025 right and and there's no there's never um there's never a silver bullet in these situations too right like the one time there was was Red Bull coming out you know flying after the first you know regulation change in a while right like there is no as we've seen with McLaren as we've seen as Mercedes has tried to claw their way back it just is it's like chipping away overtime month after month after month and that could be frustrating as a Formula 1 fan but it's also what makes the sport so compelling Adam what are you gonna think if like let's say colapinto qualifies albon or scores a point and Alex doesn't what what are you going to think I mean I'm going to I'm going to I I think hats off to him because I think there are a lot of people who are like is this guy just a paid driver right like there are people with that conversation and listen they're all paid drivers uh you got to have backing from somewhere um so it's not it's not like um it's not like this guy doesn't you know deserve a shot at some point it's not like this guy's not a talented driver I think it would be a phenomenal story Allah Nick Dees um and you know Nick also got kind of shafted a little bit by alphari so I I hope that Franco has I I hope he has that you know that beginner's luck where you don't even know what you don't know and you just go and have a great time at an amazing racetrack in front of probably the best fans on the circuit like it's h it's what a great way to jump into I think yeah I yeah I when I look at all this you know I I hope for kapino he has fun like first and foremost cuz he's only going to be in the car for the next nine races and I mean look he's he's most likely not going to be in Formula 1 next season just simply because of the lack of seats obviously and you know Red Bull has their thing going on and then salber AI I think they're working away on something with with volter whether or not that deal gets done remains to be seen But for kalap Pinto I mean if he can just learn have a great nine races um try and I mean if you score a point that'd be incredible I mean I would be I would be thoroughly impressed uh if he's able to do that for sure uh and try and set himself up for a positive uh year next year whether that be running wack full-time or who knows coming to indie car or maybe even trying to rerun Formula 2 which he can do for next next year as well which is something I'd probably do if I if I if he knew he had the backing um and could compete at a high level in F2 then go and do that I I would do that for sure try and get that Championship under your belt absolutely absolutely just keep going because you never know right like formula one's crazy you you it it can change in a heartbeat if he puts in a good little thing here and then goes back to F2 and has a great season it's like all of a sudden now everybody knows your name this is a good advertisement for him right y 100 so I think that's awesome now um you a little bit of Lando Norris talk from this morning obviously he won at xand bort he's he won another you know won his first race this year had to step out of the way for Oscar for another one but it seems like Lando's in a good spot but he revealed some interesting things this morning Tim specifically about his race day routine yeah well before we get to that I mean there was he had said something like pretty funny in the uh in the post race or sorry in the FIA uh Thursday press conference he had said that like on so after the Dutch Grand Prix he went back home so to Monaco um and went out for dinner with a friend and and I guess his car his car ended up breaking down on him yeah so him and his friend had to push the car back to his home I love that I love that I feel bad for the guy but it's funny he like you you go out you win a big race and you're like things are going good so you fly back home you get home you're like yeah I'm G to go for dinner with a buddy of mine your car breaks down you have to physically push the thing back and he's got a lot of classic cars I think he's got a Lamborghini mua cars man I I know which car it was that broke down he didn't say but like he's got some really cool cars he's he's got one of the original Lamborghinis I think where you know you open the doors and they you can see the Lamborghini horns like the bullhorns um I saw him in one of those I was like damn that is beautiful yeah he's got some great cars the other part that he had mentioned about and he was asked about um pressure and nerves and if he still sort of feels pressure and nerves and he it you know it was great to hear him open up Adam like it was actually learned learned a lot because I think for most people when you look at these athletes or just any athlete in general you never think that they are feeling pressure and nerves and how do they deal with it and what happens and blah blah blah I mean I had my own pressure and nerves things before races and stuff you know I my stomach used to get really upset uh sometimes you know like one time I almost threw up like it was an extreme circumstance I was throwing in the car at the last minute didn't have any testing at all I was on a street track I didn't know the car at all and I had to go out do practice session and try and understand and learn this thing on a street circuit and not put it into the wall uh so I was like really nervous that particular weekend for that particular race and I remember I almost like threw up everywhere because oh yeah yeah but like you know once you kind of get into the Rhythm into the routine and and start to understand and learn you those nerves start to calm down but you still get like the butterflies in the stomach and stuff like that but Lando was asked about all that and yeah I guess on Sundays he really struggles to eat and drink like his stomach again like just not able to kind of take it and sometimes he's got to force fluid down because he had learn lost two kilos after zenor that's a very physical physical race um and he doesn't use the drinks bottle in the car either and I was just kind of like wow I mean like I remember Qatar uh last year Adam and it's like you're not using the drinks bot and like in that type of physical stress plus heat all of that like and you're not using the drink bottle even though it probably tastes like crap and hot tea and whatever I mean that's man but int you know he he did go on to explain that he finds ways of getting nutrition in on the Sunday before a race like he mixes carbs through his you know fluids things of that nature but I understand where he's coming from like that's you know all drivers all athletes they all get nervous they all feel stressed and all totally like many different ways right and everyone has their own way of of dealing with it and that was just sort of Lando's way of of dealing with it and I think uh you know it's great that he opened up in that way you know he's um uh there's an ease about him uh since coming back from the break that I think going into the break I I I sensed a little bit of he was frazzled or frustrated or something it seemed like at xan vort obviously he won um but there seems to be a bit more of a okay I'm relaxed it probably has something to do with the fact that this is the best car he's ever had and they can win a they can win a a championship on both sides obviously one championship's more likely than the other but yeah you know I can understand why you know I'm glad they do the summer break uh because I think that it probably makes the drivers better and uh you want to have as much as you know there's Max fans there's Lando fans they're you know fighting on Twitter right now now the uh the reality is I want to see the athletes at their best and I want the best person to win and I think that so it's nice to see him kind of you know when he's being um open like that you can tell he's relaxed that was that's always been my sense with Lando um and I think that's the same with a lot of people now there is um there's a lot going on this weekend that is not happening at the racetrack and I think um you know this is something that I don't think a lot of outlets are paying attention to but I'm glad you are specific speically Tim because I didn't read this anywhere uh and it has to do with the Rena Factory now just some context before Tim gets into this because I want to tell you if you didn't already know Renault has been an engine supplier for at least 20 years and then they were before and then they left the sport and then they came back and they won World Championships and not just Rena the brand but also won it with Red Bull um with this in the Sebastian vetal years and so Renault uh may be moving moving away Alpine's parent company may be moving away from building power units uh there's a lot of competition the between the Ferrari the Mercedes Audi apparently is going to build their own um and they look at a team like McLaren and they go well they're running a Mercedes power unit and they can win um and you know uh Honda is supplying the power unit for Red Bull and it will be Ford in I believe 2026 um so do we really need to build a power unit anymore are we making money off it because they nobody's using a Rena power unit anymore they used to but nobody's using it Tim what's happening at the factory now because lots of rumors of a shutdown happening as in shutting it down forever what's happening yeah at the very base so this would be in France um the Rena employees at that F1 base are apparently going to go on strike uh tomorrow so Friday we're taping this on a Thursday in protest um to those plans to close the the F1 engine program after so next season so it would be to close the factory for 2026 uh apparently there's supposed to be a protest um at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend uh from folks in employees in the grand stands as well that coming from Andrew Benson um from the BBC so I think I mean we we obviously knew something was coming because we we had been talking about this now for the past few months and believe it was Jonathan Noble who had first broke the story of there being rumors of Alpine and Renault uh basically shutting down that Reno engine program and just sort of consolidating everything in the UK to build just the Formula 1 car and to transfer the you know a little bit of the money that they use to build the F1 engines over there as well Bruno famine uh essentially stepped down as team principal back you know at the end of July there before we went on summer break part of his job is to help facilitate moving folks from that F1 engine program over to the UK program over to the car program um so they can avoid things like people going on strike and all these other things so they can at least try and save as many jobs as they as they can now that's mying from from what was said uh during the Belgian Grand Prix from Bruno famine and then obviously you have Oliver Oaks who is who came in and he took over there last weekend at xan vort he's the new team principal moving forward uh and they don't want to sell the team according to Flavio briori um I think you know it's going to be one of those things it's going to be a buying your engines from you know the likes of Mercedes which for Mercedes I guess for 2026 would be a good thing because they're losing Aston Martin so they're losing a customer and if they can just take another customer and plug them in and I think for as for Mercedes that's great they get some cash and Alpine gets competitive engines and they don't have to worry about Building engines but again there's also an employee side of this thing there's people's jobs as well at stake so it's uh it it'll be interesting to see how all of this um sort of plays out Adam it's a shame really I kind of I like the fact of Renault building their own engines and jumping in here and being competitive I was a big fan of the Renault Fernando Alonzo days um winning championships for them I mean that's like when I you know I was younger watching that I was a that that's what really got me excited about uh Renault the the blue and the yellow and that car is one of my favorite you know both of those the 05 and the 06 cars are my favorite Formula 1 cars of all time so obviously a bit of a shame to see something like this start to happen but I mean yeah if you know the the OEM is not seeing a return on whatever that investment is then I guess they have to move on from Building engines for Formula 1 yeah yeah it's um it's a tough situation Tim and you you actually spoke quite eloquently it's the most fired up I've seen you this season about anything on this show uh was when that when that was first sort of talked about I I loved it I loved it raw timini um so it was it was nice and and I think um I think ultimately it's going to be a bummer to see that go yeah it will be and and I think Alpine really needs to and I I say Alpine Alpine's just a sticker it's Renault the corporation needs to figure out what the heck they want out of this Formula 1 team what are you here for because there's lots of great reasons to be in Formula 1 lots of great reasons why are you here what are you doing and I don't think I would even say the switch to Alpine I don't think that's done them any favors I think they should have kept it as it was it was a Rena team up until 3 four years ago I know Alpine's their luxury brand I don't know man I don't get it but there's a lot of head scratching moments with that team recently yeah and it's like I don't I don't want to take us too off topic when it comes to like Renault and Formula 1 power units and things of that nature like I I appreciate the technology that F1 has kind of gone through to kind of get to where they are with these units that they run now I think it's a shame that they weren't uh marketed more back in the day so like 2014 2015 2016 like the important sort of stages of all of that when teams were starting to you know get to grips with these power units and obviously Mercedes you know hit the ground running with with all of it but yeah I appreciate that and I appreciate what they're trying to do with the new hybrid power units that are coming on line here in 2026 and I like the fact that we're going to sustainable fuels which I think then opens up a ton of options for you know later on in the engine department and possibilities I mean Stephano deali has been quoted as talking about the you know the the old V8 engines and v10s and things of that nature and maybe that's something that they can look back on and maybe reimplement in the future if they find that sustainable fuels do work so then you have to take a look at your engine program Adam and say like okay well it doesn't cost us much to build a competitive you know V8 we've already done it before and so you know it's it's these types of things right that are these types of shifts in any sport any business that's just kind of like okay well you know it's it's it's fascinating technology it's great I mean but you know my personal faves obviously were the v10s a lot of other you know a lot of other people love the V I mean that's just the way it is I just missed the scream I missed the scream that they used to have that how how how loud they used to be and the other thing you know if if these fuels are turn out to be good it would be nice to see if assuming it wouldn't set the car on fire uh to see uh fuel play a role in in strategy again and obviously I it was y for sten's car I think that there's the one that's the really famous one that burst into flames while they were refueling him yes those those things that like after that I mean I mean I think the FIA did a great job in terms of safety to limit those scenarios happening I um I you know I'm I'm fine with not having refueling like I I really am like it's I know there are a lot of like diard fans out there who want uh refueling who want like the tire Wars and and all of those things and I have to kind of look back and think like was it I mean was it all that great and important I mean wouldn't you rather have battles like on the track because that's what I would rather have I would I don't care like obviously you need pit stops for the tires and stuff and that's fine but like if all I care about is seeing great racing on the track dicing hard racing pushing each other for positions pushing for victories um that's what that's what I want to see I I have to go back and sometimes like people are like say to me like oh you know I missed the tire Wars and all that kind of stuff and I'm like I mean it was cool but I'm like did we see better racing because of it yeah it might just be people being nostalgic about old things too maybe that's my fault no no I mean like I I hear this from so many F1 fans right like some are some don't care some like are really passionate about it some are Rea really passionate about bringing back refueling and all these sorts of things so my thing is is that if it helps the fight on the track and it helps make the racing closer um then you know I'm all for it this has been a great season that we've seen from Formula 1 so far it's the closest you know qualifying it's the closest in races that you know I think we have ever seen it's been fantastic and I just hope that you know that doesn't get upset right right now uh a team that needs to do well this weekend Tim really needs to do well this weekend be real good idea if they did well uh is Ferrari is a rumored big package upgrade coming yes uh what do we know what do we think could they surprise how are we feeling uh you know I'm not sure about the upgrade I don't know because at this moment I haven't received any of the as soon as I get the documents from the FIA that says this is what these guys got I never listen to the rumors on the thing and whatever I mean I know I I drive Tim Crazy by the way with rumors I send him rumors all day and he's like can you please who are these people stop it but like here's the thing though Adam with with with like the upgrades and everything though it's it's kind of like you know teams will say behind you know closed doors or they'll talk to you in the paddock you're like yeah yeah we're bringing some upgrades because in your head you're like they're bringing some upgrades but they didn't say how big they were and they didn't say it could be like a rear corner like flick on the back of like a break duct and that could be the upgrade and like you know what I mean someone's like oh there big upgrades coming this week weekend next you know it's like a beam wing and you're like what what are we talking about here right there's no big upgrade that's not a big upgrade Mclaren has the big upgrades they launched one back in xandor So if it's something like that the Ferrari's got coming to the track fantastic I haven't heard it's anything that big but I mean look if they've got something that they think is going to work uh this is the place to do it and I'll be fascinated to see what happens because if Ferrari ever were to win here uh I mean look out look out that would be very cool would be very cool as much as I want McClaren to win who what let's do a quick preview here while you know towards the end of this show because I think I want to know uh I want to talk a little bit about that and we we had something else we wanted to talk to oh we I do want to touch on Mick Schumacher as well but while we're on the subject of of the race itself what cars uh in the in the top four specifically Mercedes McLaren Ferrari Red Bull what do you think whose car is best suited for this track right now I still think Adam like mcclaren's going to be uh the stronger car coming coming out I think they' some of the the upgrades that they did make to their car for for xan vort uh I think are going to help here and then I think they also have a circuit specific rear wing coming for this weekend as well again just being smart in that development um that development route and having something specific for targeting you know your uh execution of trying to win this Constructor Championship so obvious excited to see what they what comes from them I think Red Bull obviously is going to be competitive here I think Red Bull obviously is going to be competitive you know wherever we go it's just what level of competition are we going to have from them I think they'll be quick here I really do I think they'll be they'll be quite fast uh and then it'll be interesting to see what happens with like Mercedes and and Ferrari yeah that'll be that for me is going to be really fascinating like we have new tarmac for this weekend and the entire yeah the entire track's been resurfaced something to like in Montreal Adam when we were at the Canadian Grand Prix that whole facility also got retar acted as well and they had done a really nice job with it the drivers really really liked um the grip level they liked the that they didn't change too much with the track they listened to the drivers and the layout and making sure that they didn't get rid of the curbing for Monza you know Dan Ricardo had said that he's not too sure about these uh about the curbing here now it looks a little different and it may not be that fun for the drivers to attack it right uh so that's going to be something to watch out for and then also the heat here with this new tarmac uh it looks like it can overheat the tire really easily so I remember Mercedes having difficulty with overheating Y and I remember like you know if we go to Canada that race was cooler qualifying was cooler so Silverstone was really cool that was definitely um so and they did well in those conditions so it would be interesting to see how they handle these conditions I mean Lis Hamilton didn't seem too worried about it but I don't know so maybe like a hard Tire like maybe hard Tire comp compound for the race yeah so I think essentially it will have to do with and we'll see in free practice like how does each team's Tire degrade over a long run is how they'll determine what is going to be the best TI to run in a race for Mercedes like and again I don't know if this has changed yet I don't believe it has but who knows they could have brought some things that uh may help with Tire temperatures but they do suffer from or did suffer from driving these cars in high temperatures and having the tires overheat quite a bit so I think for for them this could be it could be a difficult weekend but if it's not then that means they've kind of come to the they they've figured some things out with um Tire overheating in the race and things of that nature so well it's going to be an interesting one I'm I'm uh I'm very excited now I want to ask you about the mid pack a little bit here because there is you know we haven't paid attention because the top of the grid has been amazing awesome uh for the last it's hard to go back Adam it's hard to go back in the pack when you're just you have your teeth sunk into everything that's happening at the front agreed but there is a good little mid pack battle going on between Aston Martin uh hos and RB and I just want to know where do you think those three teams go in the next little bit here you would think Aston Martin will be the best of the three but it's not looking great they just seem to have I mean Fernando's still Fernando but what what do we think with those three teams in that battle uh there's it's a tough one because you know Aston martins's really Dro back like they really have the car is just that the updates that have been brought either have not worked or haven't Pro provided enough performance and I think they're I think they're on a bit of a recovery plan right now to try and Salvage some something from the season their driver lineup I mean it's been great like they've both Lance and Fernando have done a great job this season in handling a car that's been really trust me it is this is not a great car at the moment and these drivers are really flattering it for sure yeah the RB is in anting an interesting one Adam because like the the development execution from their side hasn't been great either but like the package that they have come to a consensus on is seems to be working but it's like some race weekends it's just you know it's not really there some race weekend you're kind of wondering okay well they really put that much effort into a qualifying slra performance or strictly race performance because when you go back to the xan vort and you see you know what's happened there with quali and Ricardo and then you see in the race I mean he had a great great Race So to me I'm kind of curious as to know okay well was the car mostly geared towards race conditions and not so much qualifying conditions and hoping that they're going to make the deficit up in the race which is very like you know You' you've got to be track position is in Paramount for for xanor um and then you know hos again they've done so well with updates so well they have man and hulkenberg again right difficult weekend in xanor but again just just right there almost scoring a point the car looks super quick um so I I think that battle between those three teams is just going to be really exciting the more we get into this season and and to see like who comes out on top for that sort of fifth place in the fifth sixth place in the Constructor standings yeah oh it's going to be great I'm excited um all right well Tim listen uh we've got a very exciting weekend of racing coming up and I'm really excited about it and long weekend here in Canada as well so that's nice oh yeah Adam I want to know like Mick schacher here so we got to yeah we got to talk about Mick real quick okay first of all I wanted I want to understand like what do you think like why when you when you look at taking Franco kapino over mix Schumacher for you what does that say I have I know the schacher name carries a lot of um a lot of value I know that um clearly in Germany it's a it's a factor um clearly uh in the sport with the F it's a factor and how could it not be his father was you know between him and Louis Hamilton the best drivers of all time was ER and Senna like you can debate right but they're great um Mick wasn't great at hos and you know people I think are upset because he won F4 he won F3 won F2 and then he was given a shitty hos car it was bad and and it was a bad team and oh Gunther Steiner was too hard on him or whatever it was uh and his uncle Ralph is you know vivly a Formula 1 racer as well is in the media constantly talking about him and I don't blame Ralph Schumacher for that if I had a nephew that I really believed in I would be in the media too you know beaking off about all these things but I have an issue with this idea that he somehow owed something my issue with Mick Schumacher is the way that it's portrayed and and it it came out this week I I sent Tim an article and and uh if you guys search for it you can find it um Jack Duhan being um uh signed up to be the new driver for Alpine next year to replace estan aan uh apparently there was a shootout in July and Ral scharer said well Mick raced earlier in the morning and Jack raced later and you know the track had heated up so of course Jack was faster and this and that um I have to say as silly as Alpine has been and I say silly because they've been silly I don't think Alpine is going to look at a lap time like that when there's a huge temperature change in the track and go that's the only thing where making our decision based on I think um alpes Engineers I think it's an insult to their to their team Engineers who are not stupid people uh and they're and and their strategy people and everybody behind the scenes there that isn't running the show uh it's an insult to think that that would be the only thing that they would judge it by and I think we have seen enough of Mick schacher uh in you know with regards to not getting the Mercedes job not getting the Alpine job I mean you know what would have been great Tim if if if if Mick schum marker was a a really great driver and he just needed a chance uh shouldn't he be George Russell's partner next year he's the reserve driver for Mercedes right yeah then the question could be why didn't Williams take him last year why didn't Williams take him last year why didn't they take him this year why did Alpine not take him at a certain point it's either he's got to go out and do more outside of the sport and I know he's done some stuff with whack and and I get that or he just doesn't have it and you know this whole thing about Williams and I'm talking specifically more about the Alpine situation than the Williams situation because of the Ralph schacher interview it's not that I don't likei Mick schacher it's that I don't like that it feels for some reason this guy is like this annointed person and yes he won all of the smaller circuits Formula 1 is not those circuits plenty of people come in and do nothing in Formula 1 that won those things including Nick de uh and and I would say that Nick D had a better run in his short run than than than MC did and I just I my frustration I think comes from the fact that this is not a sport where you're given something right if if you want that um you know those days are kind of done in Formula One for the most part right there are there were paid drivers absolutely but that's kind of going away because they've actually figured out a franchise value thing so it's going to make the the best drivers come through if Mick is this can't miss unbelievable Short Change driver that Toto wolf is coming out and talking about and I know why Toto's doing it Toto's doing it because he's trying to Big up his drivers it plays to their base in Germany I get it but please if he was that good why is Kimmy Antonelli who is 17 years old why is his name coming up more than mck Schumacher's name why are people mad at Alpine for not taking Mick mad at Williams for not taking Mick but they're not mad at Mercedes for it yeah I just this is not a this is not a reasonable reaction to this driver and he has hung around and he seems like a really nice guy this isn't a personal attack on him Tim I don't know that this guy has it and that's okay he's still among probably the top 50 drivers in the entire world he just may not be in the top 20 yeah it's it's whether or not um you know what Ralph had said is totally pinpoint it does do Mick a disservice when you know Ralph talks like that I would say I mean it's you it's hard to judge like a a shootout it it really is like you can't you can't take away everything that that Jack Duan has done at that team and how much work he's put in to uh getting that seat getting that drive uh how many other opportunities Jack may have put off just to you know stick it out as a reserve driver you know do all the simulator work that's you know required um only for a taste at some Tire testing and a few free practice sessions and you know the engineers Know Jack better than they probably know Mick at the F1 team because they've had to work with Jack with all the simulator duties that he's probably had to go on and then to help estabon and Pierre develop the car over the season and help them confirm things that they are feeling and so I think like it's tough to just go ahead and say okay yeah we're going to we're going to put Mick into the car um and not Jack and not have any real data behind why are you taking you know Mick over Jack where it's like there's a reason why it's not not only because of like shootouts and whatever and track temperature and yeah that's great but it's all the other stuff that Jack does behind the scenes it's all the other people that Jack works with it's the simulator work it's always being there it's listening it's working with the team it's you know grinding it out in a Sim session at 2: in the morning so you can help the team for the next day uh achieve something really good and achieve some points so there's a lot that you know I'm happy about with with alpine taking Jack do and it's and I had said it on podcast previous is that you know this guy deserves it he's worked for it he's put the time The Sweat Equity in he's been there never missed anything he's he's always been behind the scenes working away at it and you know I think it's it's a great opportunity for him and I think he's the right driver for that job for next season and I'm happy that a rookie is coming in and getting an opportunity and I'm happy it's Jack as well and so uh the Williams situation it's like okay well then why did Williams not take Mick to replace Logan and that's the interesting question for me that I would like to know for sure and and I've been asked about it a lot I I mean when you look at his time at at hos I mean there was a lot of Crash damage that was done there like a lot of money was spent on Crash damage maybe Williams had seen that in the past and maybe they're like yeah but we can't afford it like we can't afford crash damage anymore and then you got to make the argument of like okay what about Franco kapino I mean like he may have some crash damage on your hands there too right but but I also say Tim like it you know people always talk about the mazapan shoe marker year what about the Magnuson shoe marker year where Magnuson walked shoe Mar walked yeah it was yeah he he really yeah that was yeah Magnus was absolutely on it that year and that was a difficult season uh for Mick no question and I think the the the regulation of Carr may have also got to him as well it gets to other drivers as well it's just a different type of car needs a different type of driving style you need to adapt to it and that's really difficult so I mean when people are like okay well why didn't they take Mick and I'm like I'm always like look if they didn't take Mick for if Williams didn't take Mick for this season which they could have then they ain't GNA be taking him to replace Logan sergeant and then also factor in you know Mick also has his wck obligations as well y so would be interested to know like how much that factors into the decision at the same time because I believe Mick is yeah Mick is racing this weekend so that would have thrown a huge wrench into those racing programs as well so there's a little bit of stuff going on there and again we haven't had firm confirmation as to why I think James is going to be speaking later on this weekend so hopefully we'll get a little more information on that well I can't wait to find out I do I I I know it feels a little bit harsh I just feel like listen this is not a sport where anything is given anymore it's it is earned and and um maybe Mick does get back into the sport Tim maybe yeah for sure like it's not if he go if he goes and tears it up and wins a whole bunch of things and hell yeah bring him back it's just let's let's let him do that first yeah I think adum like you made a You made a really good point about um you know these being franchises now and taking the best drivers and making sure you're having the best talent uh in your car and and look like I I think like if we've seen it right his experience is so crucial now in Formula 1 it's just so important you I mean Williams going and and and really trying to get Carlos SS for as long as they did James vs was on Carlos SCS back in 2023 and Abu Dhabi trying to recruit him to the team like that speaks volumes not only at Carlos's talent but his experience as well and how much of it that he has and it's he's a trusted Pair of Hands that can get it done and win Grand Prix so this is what these teams are are really pushing for now right is is getting these drivers who have that experience on their team I mean good Steiner went out and blew the dust off of Niko hulkenberg and brought him back in and now look at what's happening with niiko hulkenberg yeah and he's been unbelievable yeah unbelievable there you go yeah so yeah okay well you know what Tim that that it just adds another wrinkle and I this is why we love the drama of Formula 1 too right it's it's a constant Yap Fest which I love it's so small in the racing so big on the words and and that's fantastic for us doing a podcast uh but listen uh I hope you enjoy the weekend uh it thankfully at a at a great time and I know that you're getting ready to travel here soon too so maybe next week we'll talk about that a little bit because uh Tim is going to be on site for a few races uh towards the end of the season and if you're going to be there too maybe you can look out for say hi for sure have a great weekend my friend thanks Adam appreciate it enjoy the race [Music]
