Thoughts on the 49ers 53-man roster and final pre-season game

hello again 49er faithful it's your favorite people Ryan Thomas and Mark we're here to talk to you on this podcast about the uh recent pregame preseason game against the Raiders and of course what today's news is is the final roster cut so with that we're going to kick things off welcome back everyone to the Niner station podcast Ryan and Mark how are you today doing good Tommy what's up Mark nice to see yall again exciting news for 49er fans excited to dig into this roster a little bit more and excited to hear your guys's thoughts cuz there were some some pretty big moves that were made today but Mark how was your day how was uh coaching I know you always coach right before we record these podcasts yeah we had a good practice today um good to see you guys uh it was Defensive day we got a byee this week actually um just kind of dialing in the things getting them ready for next week overall pretty good day preseason is behind us now in the NFL and we're I think like 15 days away from week one against the Jets and we can kind of focus in on what this team looks like after cuss today see who's going to be part of this um quest for six which I think we've been saying since we were in college together so I'm excited to see what the season's going to give us and then what these guys are going to do um it's going to be a hard bounceback but we'll get into that right now let's let's start off with the preseason game we can get to the roster real quick we don't to spend much time on it who do you guys think stood out in the preseason the last finale against the Raiders I'm going to take the easy route here and go with some someone that I will admitting I will admit that I made a mistake I thought that this guy was another Kyle Shanahan bust running back draft pick Isaac gendo show that he's got potential not only can he carry the ball pretty well for someone that's literally playing his first game and I don't know how long and he didn't do most of the preseason so Isaac randoo is now getting his like first touches if you think about it as a running back and what really sparked obviously was the 93 yard return where I think that if he was in football shape he would have made the touchdown but again he just started playing tackle football he just came off an injury so I think he stood out the most for me gendo was really fun to see out there out in the final game of the preseason we've been anticipating waiting to see how he would do like Tommy he's been saying the past couple weeks as he AB bust as he not but it's it was just awesome to see that okay this guy has a lot of juice and you saw them out on the kickoff returns and I'm excited to see what gendo does and we'll probably talk about it more when we talk about the roster Cuts but he has a pretty unique opportunity ahead of him making this team obviously we have mcaffrey but someone that really stood out to me again is another running back that we've been talking about is Jordan Mason and it seems like he's been a consistent theme just impressing us every single week it started with him buying that jugs machine he had a few great catches scored another touchdown via puny push I think as well so all in all great day for the running back room Mark who who did you see out there that you like well first off I agree with both of you guys Jordan Mason again proved that he should be getting quite a quite a good amount of carries this year I mean I know mcaffry is the guy but he's he's proved this preseason that he deserves more of a load than he's gotten in the past which is only going to help the ners be better mcaffry is going to stay healthier and he just brings a different level of impact and then Thomas gindo you could tell Shanahan was like hey you've been out all preseason we're really gonna see what you got go out there on special teams make an impact we're going to feed you the rock on offense prove that you can be productive and if you do that you're going to make the team and based off what we found out today it seems like he made that impact and our guy Cody Shader is probably going to be headed to the practice but I still think he can develop but for me a guy that stood out and he's kind of stood out last week too coming back off the injury was uh Jacob coing he proved that he can get open again the Raiders weren't playing anybody I think they didn't start really any of their starters but Co just proved you know that he knows how to run the right routes he's going to be where he needs to be and when the ball is thrown his way he will make a play even that touchdown catch it looked relatively simple but there was a guy flashing right in front of him before he caught that so you've seen guys in the NFL drop that in those situations and he proved that he's the moment's not too big for him so I think Jacob Coen came away in his last two preseason games coming off the injury looking really good and like he's going to make an impact on this team maybe more so than our first round pick at wide receiver so we'll see how that goes but for me Jacob coing proved that he's going to be a playmaker for us I really it's a good it's a blessing and a curse for the ners to be able to continually do this thing where we draft someone in the first second or third round and someone we take in the fourth fifth sixth undrafted is better it's a theme for the ners and it's almost like they use it as an excuse like yeah we fumble our first second and third round draft picks every year but look who we got in the fourth round look who we got in the fifth round right at the end of the day you want your draft to produce starters for the future and the blessing and the curse side of this is I mean we're getting people at a cheaper rate they might be not signed as long but if you're a fourth to six seventh undrafted Brock p is the cheapest quarterback in the NFL he makes all his money off endorsements for John Deere tractor in Alaska Airlines so I mean yeah we're getting guys Jacob coing wow what a good choice I don't know why I didn't say that instead I took the easy road with gendo but in his little amount of work I did talk about him last week or the week before about what Kyle Shanahan might want to do with something with his skill set he actually showed that that's a possibility I mean he's pretty quick and his separation of ability is going to show I think even against NFL starters right he's not going against the Raiders starters he wasn't going against saints starters if I remember correctly but I think in a game it's going to be the same kind of result so and then of course Dominic puny I've been a Dominic Poney fan since we drafted him this is one hell of an offensive lineman in a mer and we talked about him replacing Aaron Banks I think the Niners listed him as a starter so because Feliciano's out so that just shows that Kyle shanam might be breaking his I don't trust rookies starting kind of mold and maybe he'll let cowing play is where I'm going with that right if we let Dominic puny play maybe we'll let counting play especially because piol is more than likely um not going to play his shoulder injury is supposedly like a separation not a separation a dislocation and it's like a partial dislocation it's not fully dislocated in my mind I'd play with that but at the NFL level you're looking at the longevity of your first round draft pick so there obviously playing it safe if he ends up having surgery and Counting plays I think we're okay what's your guys's opinion on the rookie class that's kind of what my overall take from the last preseason game too was I think overall our rookie class looked well so I mean look look like they performed well they didn't look like they were overmatched um I mean even Kingston and the center we brought in from Michigan even those two guys undrafted Newen even they played well Renardo green played well Mustafa played well like you said puny played well gindo played well I think Sher probably performed the the least out of all of them but I think overall a rookie class proved to be a very solid class overall so I'm curious to think hear what you guys think about their rookie class after the preseason this is probably one of the better rookie classes we've had in a long time and I think after the roster Cuts today I'm pretty sure all but one of the rookie class made the the roster cut as of today so that just shows the confidence that the coaches have in each and every one of the draes from from this most recent class but you know it's been nothing but good news from the past preseason games and it's coming at a great time where so many contract conversations are going on obviously with the big dogs with Trent Williams Brandon iuk but also we have the looming BR uh Brock pie contract which is going to be huge so to have young bodies young rookies contributing like this at different spots it's it's coming at a really good time Mark long answer short I'm really happy with this rookie class there's a lot of studs in there and it's just coming at a great time it's hard to think about this roster being the last I I mean it's almost a guarantee based off the cap salary next year we're projected I think 30 million over um with how it stands and that's without Brock pie having an extension without Trent Williams having an ex extension without Bren auk having an extension so this is kind of the Last Dance for this group and I think that the supplement of the rookies is going to push the veterans to make a case for who are the Niners going to keep because it's only going to be one or two of them right Aaron Banks's probably gone J Lenor is probably staying travarius Ward might be gone he could be pushed out so there's a lot of things with Renardo green right Malik Mustafa could push out taleno hanga who again apparently is coming back on the roster you know transitioning from the preseason game to the roster will'll just go right into the safety group talanova fongo was on the roster because the Niners did not designate him for pup return so that means that he's likely to play in the first four games because if he wasn't he would have been designated injury return so that means that we're going to get a fonga back to a defense that already has a secondary that can hat so I don't know what you guys thought let's start with the safety group I think it's the quickest one to go through because it's kind of uh a guarantee I think for most gonna pull it up Ryan uh do you want me to I could yeah if you can yeah one sec but Mark what do you think I mean I think the safety group was the only one we didn't really have questions on yeah I think the safety group looks like it's going to be really solid you have Mustafa there I think Jer Brown's going to have a breakout second year personally Odin look good and huanga like you said huanga is probably going to be coming back relatively soon if they didn't designate him like you said and I think also too I think Mahoney um is going to be on the practice squad ay that didn't make the team which we'll talk about later and I think he's another young guy that if he got in the game could make an impact so I think the safety room actually looks pretty solid in my opinion very young other than odm but also a lot of guys that have flashed they have the potential to make an impact yeah totally agree I mean like I said let's just start with the safety group is this most simple thing obviously special teams is not really worth going over Jake Moody wishnowski tab pepper now it does suck Percy Harvin's kid I'm kidding Harvin III was a really solid punter that was one thing we saw in the preseason games I mean he was coughin cornering it multiple times he had a lot of kicks land I mean we don't want to have to punt very often and Mitch wisnowski is pretty solid but that was another player that it kind of sucks to let go I mean he's probably going to end up though on a 53 man roster someone somewhere else because everyone needs a good punter yeah I agree Taber pepper obviously most Snapper in the game best one in the game for sure he's been there for a while Long Snapper is the best position like if you can be good at that you can make a good living for a long time he's he's big enough yep yep you're gonna get vested Ryan what do you think about the cornerback room we kind of talked about the safeties I think we're all kind of in the same in the same ballpark with what we think about the safeties the cornerbacks are interesting so I'm curious on there's there's a name on there so I'm curious to hear what you think about the cornerback room when I first saw that Samuel wack and Rocky sin was was not making the roster that was one of the things that first shocked me when I first read the headline but obviously Renardo green was going to make it he was one of the rookies that really stood out this past preseason this whole offseason and in the preseason games but Ambry Thomas was one that was pretty shocking one for me too especially given his recent injury curious to hear what your guys' thoughts are and really fast before Tommy you want to give quick Citation for what this article is I think you sent me this it's Niner Nation from Bleacher Report yeah so we're looking today we're showing uh through Bleacher Report I thought this had the easiest breakdown by position with a little bit of an opinion by the writer for the Niner Nation not minor station this isn't us we don't publicize yet but this is through Bleacher Report I actually saw this when I was getting off work and I thought this might be the easiest way for us to break it down because it does talk about in each of the paragraphs here about who was cut so I think that Amry Thomas made the team solely because they can designate him for for injury to return later and get the 53 man roster spot the thing that shocked me was the person that they cut was Rocky sin who showed that he could be an NFL starter I don't think he clears waivers I think what the niners did here is they had the conversation with him as a veteran they said hey we're going to bring you back to the roster tomorrow I you can take a deal if you want but we're going to bring you back here if you want to win a Super Bowl and that's maybe how they get him to stay but I think he might end up somewhere else because he might he could easily be a starter on a lot of rosters yeah rockon was a shocker to me I thought he was going to make the team um and I think you're right Ambry Thomas is gonna be designated I think on IR because there's only a certain number that you can do going into the season so we'll see if Rock outon does come back and they had that conversation on the side that' be a huge addition and that'd be a really deep cornerback room probably the best cornerback room in the Kyle Shanahan John Lynch era in my opinion you got players like Isaac yanam as your death and Renardo green as your death guy we've never had stuff like that before darl looter is pretty solid I think that for whatever reason they thought that the bigger risk in loss was Rocky Asen over Daryl lutter is probably age darl lutter was a rookie last season didn't really play much until the end of the season and I think that Rocky Asin obviously being a journeyman cornerback they probably felt was not the long-term option and darl losing darl looter like they lost Reed to the Seahawks Reed Jr um couple years back he went to the Jets and now he's starting as one of the top number two corners in the league and they saw darl lutter as someone that grew up playing press man as too big of a risk Rocky sin is gone I'm hoping like I said they had that veteran conversation saying hey we're cutting you for one day we're going to bring you back tomorrow don't sign with someone but if you do it's your op it's your choice it's your prerogative to pursue your best option in your career because you might get paid few hundred, more on another team right you might I think for the Niners he'll probably get like one or two million for another team might get three or three and a half and that million and a half might make the difference so it's really just up in the air we'll see what happens in the next 24 hours because roster Cuts happened what 12 hours ago nine hours ago so we're not even in the first 20 I don't know when they're able to resign people but in the morning if we see Rocky sin signed back with the ners I wouldn't be surprised the crazy thing with our defense as of as of today heading into this season we're so used to the defense line being the miner staple of the defense our strong point our bread and butter but it seems like there's a shift a little bit like we have a lot of depth a lot of strength in the corner position which is a weird feeling for our 49er defense yeah that's definitely going off script and you could argue the Steve wils the xdb would have Lov to have this team to run his scheme right maybe a year too late for wils but it it is weird to have the defensive back field being the strength of this defense and as we look at into like the more of the Interior part of this defense the linebacker is going to have a different look right with green LW being out there's a name missing from this list that I'm looking at it says Fred Warner Devon DeAndre Campell Winters fenan fouls Curtis Robinson bethume I thought for sure Jaylen Graham was goingon to make it over Flanigan fowls um I know FL fowls is kind of like the veteran in the in the clubhouse there it's him and Fred F has been around for a while but I was shocked to see Jaylen Graham didn't make it going with a younger guy more potential especially since you had Devon Campbell in here as a veteran I would like to see Jaylen Graham in there but the linebacker room is going to be different this year and I'm also happy to see Bethune make the team so what do you guys think about the linebacker room for this year is going to look a little different without green law well in a perfect world green law has only gone for what six seven weeks eight weeks 10 weeks I think they looked at it like I think yeah 10 12 13 I think playoffs would be great Jaylen Graham is more of a mic than a will or at least than a will that they want to have I think the will they want to have is someone like d winers that just plays fast I don't think Jaylen Graham is that linebacker he's more of like your value version of Fred Warner pretty good at coverage quick good size but I didn't see him pop enough and that's why Bethune I think they thought would not clear kind of that roster politics move where beun was all over the field that guy has a nose for the football yes it's against your second and third string players right he's not doing that against NFL starters but I think they looked at it like who's probably going to be gone I don't think Jaylen Graham showed enough on film in preseason to where another team would take them cuz they probably have similar players just like that on their roster uh that's one of the things that was interesting about this roster breakdown right is the linebackers we knew that Fred Warner was going to make it I assumed D winners Flanigan fouls like you said Mark I didn't think he would make it though I didn't he must have it in with the special teams coach because I didn't think that he showed enough as a player versus Curtis Robinson I thought was a Sho in he showed plenty in the pre season film to make me think that we were so lucky to be able to get him back we should never have gotten rid of him in the first place but planning in fouls I don't think he really earned the roster spot I think he's there for special teams and I also don't see the value there over Jaylen Graham kind of to Mark's Point like he said like compared to Jaylen Graham and going in Flanigan fouls direction do you think maybe just because they wanted another veteran presence in the locker room for the linebacker group since green law is going to be out for how many weeks that they wanted some stability there that's kind of the rationale behind that decision or do you think it's something else I think I think for sure right because the whole reason they brought in Sorenson to run the defense is to have that kind of unity and stuff and when you look at that list right Fred Warner's obviously been there forever but everyone else d winner second year dandre Campbell first year the system yes he's a veteran Robinson it's his like first and a half year because he got cut from the Niners a few years ago so he kind of knows a system and then bethune's a rookie fouls is the only other guy in that group that knows the defense probably inside and out so I think that is probably a big factor on why he did make the team over Jaylen Graham the only thing about the veteran presence argument that I would argue against strongly is you almost have to assume guys like d winers Curtis Robinson and Tatum Bethune were all captains of the defense in Prior you know College High School you name it so you're not really losing that presence because everyone knows exactly what it is like to fall in line behind Fred Warner be a captain and support the team and they they know football to play linebacker at the NFL level you must have a high NFL IQ and I High football IQ at the NFL level and I mean obviously I do not have anything close to that experience but you almost have to assume where is the gap what is Demetrius planing in fouls really providing I still think it must be a special teams thing I just don't know how he's better at special teams and Jaylen Graham but you know all right let's move on here so defensive line obviously with the recent injuries to Leonard Floyd and yurr Mos I think they're both supposedly going to be healthy for week one we'll find out I think the Niners are going to make a move in the defensive end World Robert B Jr can't anchor and you have an upset ad here that none of us have ever talked about on Niner station so first time Sam I'm not going to say your last name I was thinking the same thing I was going to call him Sam I'm like I'm not trying to say that at work today I listened to Brian peacock and Eric Crocker talk about this and Eric crooger talked about how he's not going to pronounce his last name and call him Sam until he can figure it out so that's where I stole that from that is not an original statement unfortunately but you got to think about here that a guy does get the defensive line coach and defensive coordinator behind him must be pretty decent to make the team I've heard about his story he grew up out of the country moved here played in high school had a stop for grades played his senior year went to Maryland um I think he might have transferred after that he was drafted by the Titans as a little bit of a background but Sam apparently can play ball I'm just curious to see if Sam is a is a is a day one roster or a final roster I don't know if he'll be a final roster but I've also Al heard good things about him and obviously ceric was in the ear of Shanahan and Lynch saying hey I think this guy deserves a shot Robert Beal I understand why he made the team because he's kind of like a last man standing at defensive end but I've really tried to watch him this year when he was in the game in the preseason because he has all the measurables right height speed strength all of that in the weight room but I've been very underwhelmed from what I've seen and obviously I'm not watching game film I don't know the defensive play call or what his assignment is but I feel like he doesn't set the Edge well like you said Thomas and for a guy that has the speed that he does in the 40 yard dash I feel like I see quarterbacks scrambled away from him guys get the edge and he just can't get out there um and make a play so I was very underwhelmed with him and Floyd and GMOs those guys getting hurt in that last game really depleted our ad depth so I think you could see a guy like Randy Gregory maybe getting a call saying hey we need some you played with us last year you just got cut do you still want to play play coming for a vet minimum um I think they're going to start reaching out for guys to to bring some depth in at the defensive line and for the first time I think in this Lyn Shanahan era that's probably the weak link of our defense I'm excited to see what happens these next few weeks like you said Tommy if we do end up making a pretty big move or if we go the veteran minimum route and pull someone else on the roster but looking at this defensive end group you guys pretty much captured everything pretty solid group but I'm starting to wonder now if we do want to make it to the Super Bowl and have Super Bowl aspirations having you know those two injury scares in the third preseason game last week you know really opened our eyes a little bit so really hoping for the best with this group but hope they stay healthy one last caveat though when we focused obviously initially on the defensive end group but I do think that we're stronger this year for defensive line I think uh was it Jordan the video Jordan Elliot spit team but the one that Jordan Elliott split in the double team was the best football video I've SE ever seen I think it was amazing he splits one he takes on one block in the double team sheds it takes on the second guy sheds it and T makes a tackle at the line of scrimmage maybe behind the line of scrimmage that was something that most people can't really do I think Aaron Donald could do that yeah but he did a different way aren't doing it you know he got out of his stood his ground in the Gap against two NFL linemen boom boom tackle like that that was a man's play right there no offense to Javon kinlaw but as a first round draft Pi we didn't see that once the last time we saw anyone do anything similar was to Forest Buckner yeah I don't even think armet ever really even did that so no that yeah that was a the man move that yeah that is Gap control that is text but Gap control I mean that's literally the best you could possibly do in that situation you take on a double team shed both and make the tackle at the line I'm actually willing to say this week every NFL and college team has seen that exact clip in the defensive line meeting room every defensive line coach in the league in the in high maybe even high school has pulled that clip up and said hey when I say you got B Gap control this is what I mean and this is how you fight a double team and make the tackle don't tell me it can't get done even though we all know that's very hard to do it was a beautiful thing to see that's nerd football talk though so I don't know how many people people I don't think a lot of people understand that that is such an incredible play I mean to shed a double team and make the tackle at the line of scrimmage maybe to shed a double team and get Pursuit yeah but at the line of scrimmage that's like that we're talking about a very small percentage of people that can ever do that but yeah totally agree Robert beld Jr again all the measurables in the combine but the game film doesn't show the same performance in and that's why you can never really truly trust a defensive lineman's Combine results right they could have 40 45 you know or 30 to 40 you know bench press 225 run a 44 like Robert Beal and they get out there and they don't move people like Jordan Elliott now they're playing different positions but I also think Robert B is a little undersized but yeah I did see you know obviously we have Kevin given too for depth so again this is the first year where behind hardgrave I do feel like hardgrave and Malle Collins are probably going to start but our next rotation is going to be Elliot and given that's pretty solid most years we're getting beat up the middle and it looks like with the addition of Jordan Elliott and Malik Collins now we actually have that depth to more consistently stop that up the- Middle Run and I think that's going to make waves across the defense but we'll find out right I mean again we got the strong safety and DV group that we talked about earlier obviously we're deep at linebacker so the defense as a whole I think we can round it out there looks pretty solid obviously we have Nick Bosa still we have for those following Along on video we're kind of going ascending order so bear with us yeah we're we're going backwards through the Bleacher Report from easiest position to go over the safety group and special teams upwards through defense and then on to offense now now so obviously let's start with the offensive line without Trent Williams we're looking a little depleted in my opinion left tackle is going to be jayen Moore if Trent Williams doesn't sign and I don't know about you guys but that's a huge risk but as we go through the rest of the group I mean we have people like Dominic pun at guard that's going to fill a big gap we're going to be able to run up the middle a lot better to the right side I think that's where he's going to start Aaron banks will probably be left guard um and then Colton mckivitz is going to be a better player with someone like puny next to him kind of like how Aaron Banks is a better player next to Trent Williams but we don't really have tackle depth and we also decided to keep Nick zakel solely because he used to be Brock P's roommate um what do you guys think about the o line I would like to think that Nick SEL you know kind of been earning his spot and not solely attributed to being Brock P's old room but yeah it's it's been wild to watch especially with this whole Trent Williams news and the backdrop we keep harping on it on it but Dominic puny really has been a godsend for us this season imagine all the conversations we would have had about the 49ers offensive line if we didn't get Dominic Poney I'm curious to see like the the the lack of tackle depth is is what really scares me as well and who knows what Trent William decides to do but if he's not out there it's going to be really really ugly for us yeah this is the scariest um position group I think overall on the team this is the one position group that stood out to me in the preseason whether it was the first series or the last series that was like this is not a good thing right now our quarterbacks are continually running I think that's why dos look better than Allen cuz dos can run and he just brings that like hey if you're going to have this offensive line you need a guy that can be athletic um I think actually with banks and puny like we're pretty solid in the middle right but we're looking at this list and there's no Trent Williams and Trent Williams does not sound like he's gonna come back unless we pay him the first thing is pay him um we need him second thing is is if we don't have Trent Williams I don't know if we get 17 Gam out of Brock P this year based off what I'm seeing on this list like you said puny is a godsend if if we didn't draft him we'd be in big trouble I think zakel made the roster over nent as Center because zakel can play guard and I think he can actually play tackle in a pinch like if you needed it where nen is strictly a center I don't think he can play guard so I think that's why zakel made it and you know py might have been in the year too but I think that's mainly the reason why he made it I'm not very confident in the offensive line this year and I think depending on how this year goes they might need to look at the way they structure this team and say hey maybe we spend a little less money on the skill guys kind of like the Chiefs did right letting Tyreek Hill go and guys like that and we just focus on building this line behind our quarterback because we have an offensive coordinator that's supposed to be able to get Guys open and get looks and so this this the group scares me the most on this team this year I mean for anyone to get looks you need there to be time and I fully agree with you that without Trent Williams we don't see 17 games from Brock p as someone that's drafted Brock py quite a bit in best ball in the ninth 10th 11th round I would love to see Brock pie play a full season I mean totally agree godsend is almost an understatement for Dominic puny I think of the last decent or good offensive lineman we drafted it was probably Mike mcglinchy in the first round of the eighth pick so we had to use that kind of draft Capital to get someone compared able to the production we're hoping puny can give us and I I'm worried I mean this offense is great we got skill positions at every level offense and defense but without an offensive line doesn't matter we don't score points you're gonna have Chris mcaffrey Deo Samuel zuk oh wait KD we do we have all those people we have Pro Bowl level players at every position as a skill position for the offense plus depth but we don't have an offensive line right now we really don't I was kind of shocked that was it Kingston yep or Kingston didn't make the roster I think he'll be PR well I hope he clears waivers because I he's a guy that could play tackle and that's where I'm worried the most is is you know knock on wood we're all Niner fans here we know the injury bug tends to bite the Niners quite a bit and with things like the rest differential that we have with Trent Williams potentially not playing week one I no longer count the Jets game Monday Night Football as a win without Trent I think it's 50/50 so yeah I'm most worried about the offensive line but the offensive line is tandem with our tight end group so we'll lead us into that so what's interesting here and this is the first time I'm going to use that word today because the ners did something they'd never done before they kept two tight ends and they kept George KD and tongs tones tones think from Cal he a c now he's decent but in the past we've had guys like Ross delli and we've he we've had tight ends that we Charlie Warner that we thought could you know block and make maybe catch passes I don't think if KD gets hurt tonas can fill any of that void maybe they had the veteran conversation that I talked about earlier with Rocky sin with Troutman tman sober sorry Adam sober whatever his name is he's a very mediocre tight end but he actually looked pretty decent in our system we cut Cameron LW to again third round bus not a running back but follows the trend of the four gosh we should literally just take our first three picks and trade them for veterans every year yeah I mean when you look at that list Thomas I mean look you have Cam latu and Braden Willis two guys that we drafted last year right is draft Capital down the drain so as good as this draft was this year at least it looks like in the pre-season everything could change in the regular season as good as this one looks like it's going to be last year's draft just wasn't it when you're looking at the tight end group you you spent two picks on guys that literally were cut probably one of them one of them will be on the practice squad I think and then you know Mason P I think too another guy that I thought might make this list so the ti the tight end room to me is very um underwhelming I think obviously there's something gonna they're going to have to have three tight ends I was listening to a podcast and they're like they can't have two because they do two tight end sets like quite freak frequently and you can't have your entire position group on the field at once is just not good to have right unless they're planning on use Che being tight end three type of thing I don't know but the tight end room is is interesting in my opinion yeah it's just interesting that if anything we went down to two tight ends but the hurtful thing was seeing like you guys said draft Capital just going down the drain I thought thought that if anything this past preseason maybe latu and Braden Willis did just enough to maybe make the roster for depth purposes and because they've been in the offense have some more experience but apparently it just wasn't enough uh hopefully KD has another healthy year ahead of him and um he could produce because we are certainly going to need him shout out to Jake tonas he is ultimate local kid coming out of loc's high school as well and hey Cal that's awesome but two tight ends that'll be interesting to to follow as well I bet you he's living at home with his parents and losg commuting he's a living saving that money he's the 2024 DeVito there you go yeah is he I used to work in it's not a bad place to be cut is his mom making cutlets for after practice no I yeah maybe he doesn't have a problem bulking up for the NFL we can put it that way but yeah this is just a weird group I think that with again with the injury designations with Feliciano and Amry thas looming for tomorrow I think a tight end is inevitable I just think that we need me uh we need more defensive line depth and a tackle so if they decide to roll into week one with two tight ends that'll be the first time I think any team has done that I don't think any team roster is just two tight ends so it's just you know again like Mark mentioned we run two tiend Personnel more than any NFL team so if we have the entire position group on the field and one goes down that whole entire Playbook is gone like no teams fallen for use check get tight end but maybe that might be a blessing in disguise though maybe you can do more than these people and that's what they were thinking they were like okay well worst case scenario Braden Willam was a terrible fullback I think we can all admit that that guy couldn't blow up a single hole to save his life and we realize that he is not that was what their I think that's what their argument was to keeping Bron Willis and the film showed the exact opposite they said that he could play fullback in a pin if H Che is hurt he went out there and played fullback for against the second and third stringers and couldn't blow up a single hole proving that usek is actually worth the money something that i' haven't thought I would ever say but yek is definitely worth the money because he's one of the last remaining fullbacks that can blow up a hole and catch passes and he can run the ball and a pinch so yeah this was surprising we kept two I think we're going to get a third tomorrow um I just who that's going to be I don't think it's going to be Bren Wills though and I don't think it's going to be lotu I think it's going to be someone from the outside um I think it's Logan but Logan Thomas can't blow up a hole so we'll find out yeah the Logan Thomas the that's true he can catch he can catch that guy can catch speaking of catching what do you guys think about the wide receiver room you threw that fast ball there had to take it out of the park Tommy what a good transition thank you sir that that was a beautiful transition butan Scrolls up yeah as he Scrolls up yeah um I like the look of it that was the one that we talked about there were a lot of guys that were going to be on the bubble and it looked like looks like Ronnie Bell made that bubble I'm glad Chris Conley made the team Jacob Co like we were talking about and then those first four obviously were going to make the team so what do you guys think about the wide receiver room our guy Ba's on there too so that's a good sign I was pleased to see Chris Conley out there he's a nine-year veteran he has been making plays this offseason preseason and carrying to last season too so not too surprised as proud of Chris connley if anything continuing to put in work and being that veteran in our wide receiver room even though Debo auk Jennings are pretty much considered veterans you know this guy is a 9-year veteran with lot lots of knowledge on the in the league and sure he can help these young receivers and speaking of young receivers it was also great to see Ronnie Bell make the team again I wasn't sure he was one of the bubble guys for me even though he was on the team last year it seems like he did make an improvement in different areas in his game especially with the blocking which is really nice to see he made a lot of great catches in preseason so really happy to see Ronnie Bell hopefully we'll get to see what he does in the season and Brandon I peol those two guys are going to be big question marks as of today heading into next week into week one still I'm not even sure how Brandon auk status is going to be let alone how productive he's going to be week one in the the early weeks um and peaw we'll have to wait and see still not a lot of info on him he was in the blue jersey this past week so I think we just need to see more but obviously the coaches believe in him we draft we invest did a lot into him so fingers crossed on peaw but overall I like this wide receiver group even better if we have aayu get it too IU comes back I think Ricky peaw get surgery on his uh his shoulder and they designate him for IR for next year and we get an extra roster spot the person here that I'm most surprised about is Ronnie Bell making it he didn't he improved like you said Ryan in some areas but for whatever reason this year he had popcorn before the game he couldn't catch anything last year he was you know the he was the rookie Phenom man this guy might you know actually get some snaps behind our deep wide receiver room this year I totally agree with you mark Chris Conley absolutely deserved a roster spot he looked like he could go out there and any game start against a first team defense and still put up numbers I mean to fill the gap for iuk I called those the iuk routes essentially it's a 15 to 20 yard over the-middle uh receiver route I think Conley can do it Tay Martin tried Ronnie Bell tried and that's where I thought that Ronnie Bell wasn't gonna make it because I thought that because of the emergence of gendo and coing in the in the return game right kickoff return and punt return Ronnie Bell's extra roster you know ability or his ability to fill extra roster spots or roles I should say kind of was depleted I thought Trent Taylor was actually going to make this team over Ronnie Bell because I saw enough from Trent Taylor to see that if we were to actually get in that situation where we're starting our wide receiver five or six Trent Taylor can do a lot of the intermediate stuff like he did back in the day with Jimmy Garoppolo with a better quarterback like Brock py I think Trent Taylor is actually pretty decent out there I mean his ability to separate hasn't hasn't like gone away but Ronnie Bell and his Butterfingers he made the roster because I think the Niners thought roster politics he's not going to clear waivers so we have to keep Ronnie Bell but the rest of the group I think is pretty understanding the one thing I am happy about is we finally cut Danny gray nothing against say I don't know I be happy about cutting but yeah happy that he's gone because I just thought he was like not as good as Dante Pettis he was just faster he's gonna go to the Chiefs and go off watch no I'm just kidding um R okay they're good they don't need a receiver I think Ronnie Bell made the team for simply for the fact like you said he's gonna he wouldn't clear waivers another team would pick him up I think Trent T Taylor with how old he is how long he's been in the league he could Pro possibly not C clear waivers or clear waivers and they can pick him up on the practice squad so I think that's what that was and then Thomas if if your prediction is right and peol is iard for the entire season that to have your two first round picks in the last four years and you spin them on Trey Lance and Ricky peaw both of whom literally have no impact on your football team ever in the history of what you're trying to accomplish in winning a Super Bowl I mean to fall into Brock pie in the seventh round and then now if Jacob coing can produce like we think and then Jacob coing in the third or fourth whatever round it was to cover up for the fact that you're literal first round picks the past two times at the same position groups right to be able to do that would be an all time like are you serious like you should be fired because that is Terri able execution of a first round pick so if that does happen that's going to be a big conversation if this season does not end in a Super Bowl that's all I got to say if you have two first round picks in four four years that are not contributing that is terrible and we wonder why we have cap problems coming into next year under I think we're 30 35 million at least over the cap without any extensions yeah I think what would be our last impactful our last impactful first- round pick would be Brandon auk and asking for the money 2019 that bag we we made fun of the Rams for trading all their first round picks for these old guys and here we are we should we have nothing from our first round picks so we could have had jayen Ramsey we could have had like all all these other guys you know I don't know don't should have could would us because we can go down that rapit hole for another hour just saying if that does happen that's terrible well what's left Ryan what do you think running backs all right so we'll let's do this really quick running backs was obviously kind of a an assumption just like a lot of a couple other player groups right I mean obviously CMC number 23 who I'm rocking right now that was a bad job I don't think the camera could see it but my screen's minimized right now because of the screen share Jordan Mason who we've talked about for a couple years on the podcast I think since our first couple podcast post draft when he was drafted or when he was picked up as an undrafted I can't remember one of the two I've been Jordan Mason fan since the get-go Isaac gendo again showed like I said in the opening that 93 yard kickoff return I think earned him a spot alone but I think he was going to get one regardless because Kyle shanam was not willing to Adit that he up again on early draft running back and then you get Patrick Taylor Jr surprised I thought we were going to keep braa over him to be honest with you guys um because I thought bra actually showed that he still got some juice and Patrick Taylor is good but braa has succeeded for the ners and I thought he was going to get the roster spot Sol because of the history um y cheek obviously he's going to be on the team because again we don't have a fullback that can you know this is probably an easy position group did you guys see any Shockers here I think the Shocker for me was seeing a good running back for us the last couple years Elijah Mitchell seeing him get placed on the IR his injuries must be really bad for him to be placed on season ending ir and for guys like Patrick Taylor to take his place so I'm sure we'll he we'll hear more about like the reasoning and what exactly is going on but for me that was the big shocker Elijah Mitchell yeah hearing that news it was just like man like he it you feel bad for a guy right who clearly has a talent but like he just lives up to the like if he could stay healthy if he could stay healthy if he could it's the same conversation every year he like Jason verret at running back yeah exactly that's a perfect comp that's a perfect comp it's like when this guy's Heth Corner yeah when he's healthy he's a top 10 running back but he's healthy one to two weeks a year so like it's like well great that's awesome um but maybe he'll be on the flag football Olympic team where you're not hitting people in four years but that was a a disappointment I think that's going to be the bow tie on his career as a Niner Thomas I think you said before the PO it was kind of like a courtesy we'll just put you on the IR you've done a lot for this organization you can make the money instead of just being cut from the IR I'm sure you get paid something but that was sad for me to see overall though with him being out this is probably who would make the team because Sher didn't show anything worthy of making the team over Patrick Taylor and this running back room I think is pretty solid overall so I'm excited to see it and then the quarterback room right up there next after the running backs was probably what we all thought was going to happen they're going to keep all three and go with I would say dobs is probably going to be the number two quarterback on game day in my opinion but I like the quarterback room overall I think we all know as football fans though if qb1 goes down Super Bowl chances probably go out the window so let's hope that we don't have to watch the other two guys for extended period of time yeah I mean and what world do we think that we're going to bring home a championship against the chiefs with someone that's not Brock pie back to the running back room really quick yeah absolutely I think that Elijah Mitchell got that courtesy you've done a a lot of work for our team wouldn't be here if you were if you weren't here type treatment where he's going to essentially get paid this year instead of being cut at the full value that we were going to pay him and if we win this year knock on wood he gets a ring because he's on the IR so he's technically a part of the team moving to the quarterback room 100% agree that this is not necessarily crazy I thought it was kind of funny Kyle shanan the interview said that we haven't really discussed who the second stram quarterback is but I agree it might be Josh dos over brilin Allen I actually do think it depends on the team we're playing maybe that's why Kyle Shanahan said that because if the team has a good pass rush you want a Scrambler Josh dos team doesn't have that good of a pass rush and offensive line looks good you might want bran Allen because you can call more plays in your system so maybe he feels more confident that bran Allen's a better choice but the person that I actually was I'm hoping fingers crossed clears waivers is Tanner morai that was the first deep ball I've ever seen Hail Mary type situation in the ners where we actually completed yes it was a tip pass but Jimmy Garoppolo couldn't do that Alex Smith I don't really remember him ever doing it the only time you ever see a Hail Mary pass completed is like Aaron Rogers right on a highlight on ESPN top 10 we saw Tanner morai do it and I'm hoping that other teams didn't watch the fourth quarter but I think ESPN showed it so Will Tanner morai clear waivers and the Niners can bring him back on the practice squad trade Josh dos Tino hats or uh Brandon Allen right to a quarterback needy team because knock on wood I don't want to talk about injuries but it's an evitable across the NFL 32 teams that first string or second string quarterback gets hurt it's already Happ with JJ m it could happen any time with any quarterback in any game and some team's going to be looking for depth and we have two very NFL respectable backups they're not starters Josh jobs and Allen are not starters in any sense of the word but in a in a pinch if you needed a backup Niners actually have a pretty decent backup situation so I would love for us to trade for a fifth or sixth round given our history for Josh jobs but if we don't and Taran morai ends up on the practice squad because he wants to stay because he realizes that long term we're not keeping Allen and we're not keeping dos and you'll be number two behind perie for the forers moving forward as of next year basically maybe he stays right again it's Those Behind the Scenes conversations that we have no idea what's going on I'm just thinking from my background in sales that I would sell more Kion staying with the ners as a practice squad player versus making a 53 man roster that in one year you're were going to be the backup for Brock birie so that's just my thoughts I agree with those thoughts I was his agent or person advising him I would paint that same scenario that Josh jobs Brandon Allen are not the long-term backup solution and for all we know just given the NFL es and flows the high rate of injury that teams will be in need of of a quarterback and we all remember the pasta from last year and people yeah people will be in need so I think that'll just take some time but until that does happen it's nice to know that we do have solid QB room heading into the season we have our guy Brock and it's it's a big it's going to be a big season for Brock if if all goes according to plan and what we hope for him to do to take us to the Super Bowl he could be one of the highest or if not the highest paid quarterback in the league so a lot can happen in this year for Brock pie for our QB room so I can't wait to see it yeah with backup quarterbacks you're just looking for guys honestly that are going to help the quarterback break down film understand what the defense is trying to to do that can communicate on the sidelines right what they're seeing from the sidelines a different point of view and just help him be a better player and that can step in and win a game or two ultimately like pery spray the ankle he's out for a week or two can you go in there and win a game and Thomas I like your idea too of depending on the opponent you might have a different qb2 to set up for those situations but overall I think this roster is pretty stacked I think we're NFC favorites obviously call us Homer whatever you want to call us but when you look at the depth of this team and the the history and what they've done the past four years they've got to go out and take advantage of this like you said Thomas last dance with this group of guys because it's going to be a completely different looking team next year so it's going to be fun to watch what this team can do if they can put all those haters away that say oh you can't come back from a Super Bowl loss we'll see they're they're going to be going to be hungry and man Tao thinks that they can't they're emotionally drained or whatever and was it de someone someone tweeted back a a comment that I'm not going to stay on air but if you guys want to look it up it was a pretty good clapback if you're from our generation and know the story of mantio um but we'll see what they do this year the Niners I'm I'm expecting big things let's just say mantio isn't the person I'm taking advice from on anything but no obviously yeah I totally agree this is a it's a differently built Rock roster than what we usually see right we usually see overwhelming depth at DN and D line we don't see the same kind of depth at DB we've always kind of talked about how beyond the first string starters at DB we don't have the same depth running back wise we've never really been worried because the whoever is the running back is someone that produces o line has been a consistent issue because we don't invest in it and that's something that if you're a ner fan you're well aware of right I mean we have to go outside sign Trent Williams we don't do that we don't replace Joe Staley Niners fall apart so I do have optimism for this year again Mark you're right I do think we're going to still end up being the NFC favorites we'll find out in the first couple weeks we went over a little bit today do you guys have anything else you want to talk about or should we close this out no I think we're good awesome well if you haven't already
