F1 Italian Grand Prix 2024 - RACE - Live Timing & Commentary

e e he for e e he for you ready for this everyone certainly hope so e could be a two-stop strategy who knows what is to come when lights go out in a few moments time here's the starting grid second week in a row the two sers have been slowest Joe gr at the back VY botash just ahead of him then comes Franco kapino in 18th making his formula one debut for Williams L Str missed out on Q two here for the third consecutive year ahead of them Yuki sonoda out in q1 twice in the last three races estan o on 15th and his teammate Pierre gazley has out qualified okon in consecutive races since the summer break Kevin Magnuson starts 13th ahead of these Daniel Ricardo first time he started outside the top 10 here since 2018 Fernando Alonzo just missed the top 10 he starts 11th n hulkenberg in the top 10 for the seventh time this year Alex albon starts ninth for Williams and then it's an all Red Bull row four Sergio Perez eighth Max vadon seventh third time he started seventh here he won from there two years ago Lewis Hamilton was very disappointed to qualify only sixth Carlos SE starts fifth on his 30th birthday for Ferrari for whom charl Clair starts fourth George Russell third on the grid he won the last time he started third and the front row is all papaya Oscar piastri who won from second in Hungary last time McLaren locked out the front row Lando Norris is on pole Martin brundle the fifth different poll sitter in the last five years here whisper it quietly don't tell Lando the previous four failed to win yeah the stats tell a story there and it's a long run down to the first Corner 476 M to be precise from pole position to the first Breaking Point uh and judging that breaking point is difficult when you've had a long run down there your breaks where they need to be nor your tire temperatures your rars are hotter of course because you pile a load of power into them to get off the grid and drive down there uh and it's so close at the front of the grid they know that there's a lot of peril down there in the first chicade but also a lot of opportunity it's hot out there in all of our briefings this morning cofy we didn't have anybody talk about rain but all of a sudden it's sort bubbling up here and there and they're saying now 40% chance which means a 60% chance it won't rain of course but Ferrari I think they fancy their chances with a bit less downfalls a bit better straight line speed if they get a slip stream the rear wing open the DRS open and a little bit of extra speed as well they could be quite handy uh in in close combat in the race they could be a threat Mercedes and George Russell could be a threat to the front row as well McLaren have looked at Team orders and are saying look if the situation calls for it we'll make the call at the time and we won't be afraid to make a the call does Oscar piastri need to drive today though to protect his teammate who is realistically the championship Challenger to Max I'm sure they've had that discussion um but you know unfortunately as Lando knows all too well when he lost out in a drag race with Daniel Ricardo down to the first Corner another russie it cost him the Grand Prix victory in some respects didn't it back here in 2021 y uh it was so um that's what it's all about but you've then just as Lando did last week what whatever happens at the start as long as he's got four wheels on his wagon it doesn't matter because then you got another 53 laps to try and sort it out I watched Lando's practice start in the pit Lane and it looked good it looked every bit as good as anybody else's excellent right hard tires on the Red Bull of Max for stappen also his teammate Sergio Perez hard tires for Aon Coda stroll and botas as well so they need to get to lap 30 to make a One Stop strategy work everybody else has gone on the medium Tire does it surprise you that Red Bull have gone different or do they have to try something I think because they're struggling with the handling they want to they want to try something I'm surprised that they've done that with both cars um and put pressure on the other teams because that is against expectation as you point out um they will struggle to get the cars off the line a little bit and warm up in the first few corners and through throughout the first lap but then if they stay out of trouble um they can go nice and long where that strategy will fall over is if there's a safety car say snap seven to 10 uh and those around them and in front of them get a cheap Pit Stop to put their hog compound tires on uh so everyone has saved two sets of new compound tires apart from The ason Martin who tend to put a heat treatment through theirs just do them for one lap and they think that gives them a bit of longevity but if you do make an extra pit stop here and you have to go to a two stop it's 24 to 25 seconds of your race time that you lose so expect a bit of time management today but is anyone going to start pushing and think a two stoper could be quicker uh I think they'll see how the tires react and drive to that and they'll have to commit relatively early to a tw- stopper de relation here tends to be quite low the wear rate but and a lot of it's is in a straight line of course but if you start graining up if we see that sort of shaded surface on the tires particularly the front tires then your weary goes through the roof basically and you're sliding around the more you slide the more you grain the more you grain the more you slide then you can't slow the car down you start locking your brakes and and you're into a spiral at that point they will make that decision but when you see Front Runners put on the white marked hard compound tires they're into new territory nobody as you said has run those uh so Lando Norris then first race back from the summer break and he made a statement 22.8 seconds the winning margin the largest winning margin of the season and we followed on to a completely different track and McLaren have the pace again now they're having to sit on the front of the grid for quite a long time uh and the problem they had last weekend is an they didn't get enough heat into their rare tires and and a long wait on the front row of the grid won't help that for McLaren yeah slotting into his place now Max for stappen Joe guu in the salba making his way to the back of the grid really really slowly to be honest probably needs to get a bit of a move on so yeah let's put some heat into those tires and get this race set we've got 53 laps to come for what is the 75th World Championship Italian Grand Prix the 74th to take place here at Monza the fastest race of the season this is taking too long I really need to talk the in the dri briefing about this it's too long for the back a row to line up yeah they will have a lot warmer tires by the time the lights go out than those that have been sat on the front row here for quite some time but we are ready In the Heat of Monza it's lights out and away we go piastri slightly quicker off the line Norris moves over to try and cover him here comes George Russell though Lando Norris leads pastri moves to the left to put pressure on George Russell into the first Corner Russell locks up Lando Norris leads from Oscar pastri the two Ferraris get slightly pinched Russell is going to have to concede places he took to the runoff area but they've got the and Lando Norris leads through C Grande very smart from the two McLaren drivers pastri tucked in Norris gave him the slipstream and then they didn't squabble too much in the first chicane they are in the second chicane squabbling and pastri takes the lead of the Italian Grand Prix and Norris under pressure and charlot Clair now comes through at the first lesmo so once again Lando Norris will not finish the opening lap of a race when starting on pole in the lead of that race I don't think Norris expected his teammate to do that it's really put him on his back foot I was just saying how smart they were down to the first chicade they gave each other space they gave each other a slipstream and they were working as a pair team play and then that happened team orders what team orders his two team mates going wheel to whe Kevin Magnus Ando hulberg who's had a Dreadful start and he's been overtaken as well by Pierre gazley down the back straight we go Norris under pressure from his mate and former teammate Carlos SS he's down in third place lead this race though as they cross the line to complete lap one it is Oscar pastri half a second clear as Charlotte Clair the I me I got the penalty for up so max complaining about an incident with L Hamilton he's up to six Sergio Perez up to seventh George Russell is down to eighth momentarily as Sergio Perez battles with him and the Mercedes and Russell has front wing damage something flapping around on the right side of his front Wing DRS now enabled the the first lap is over but that really cost McLaren in terms of being able to control the front of this race now they' got to settle down and look after their tires a little bit through this phase with heavy fuel load and only 610 of a second the difference between pastri andir you've got to be within a second to get that DRS Advantage andir is sticking to the McLaren you said it Martin Ferrari fancy their chances here this weekend and they are in a very good spot with charlot Clair making up two places already in this race into the escari chicane we go now through the dirt goes Oscar pastri someone's had a moment and he kicked up a whole load of dust it was the Hass wasn't it I think on the previous lap tangling but yeah luckily they got enough down for and grip to cope with that a lot of gravel on the racetrack and the Ferrari then with his trim Out Wings they think they're a little bit stronger in a straight line than those around them but pastri beginning to check out up front h the 16th he started in the top 10 Fernando alono moves into that top 10 and claiming the last points place currently let's see the speed of that Ferrari not making the impression charl Clair would have wanted on that particular occasion probably needs to be within about half a second going a lot of damage he's dous copy that so Perez trying to get in trying to get Russell black and orange flag to come in and change his car but but um yeah Russell then slotted back in seven between the two Red Bulls I think Red Bull will be pretty happy that they've ended up Sixth and eth at the end of the first lap in good position track position as well on those hard compound tires it could we well be right there lead out in front about 710 of a second team orders what team orders they were racing and did Oscar pastri take Lando Norris by surprise there and what is that going to mean then for the rest of this race still SS putting pressure on Lando Norris there's George Russell there's the damage on that front Wing the plate on the right hand side has completely disappeared and that's why Sergio Perez is saying it's dangerous they should be calling him in and telling him to change that front Wing I think the bit that's was dangerous is long gone by the looks of it but it'll be hurting George's front tires even more the trouble for George is that's a 12 second pit stop at least when he comes in to put a new front wing on so Ricardo and have been noted by race control for causing a collision Ricardo on hulkenberg hasn't been sent to the stewards yet but that explains why hulkenberg has dropped back and we're on board with Sergio Perez running in eighth place now behind George Russell who once again just dips a wheel on the dirt momentarily kicks up a puff of dust on that occasion okon gets past sonoda into the first Corner okon up to 14th in the Alpine and still shair sticking very much to the rear wing of osar pastri he's not dropping back he's not letting pastri get away and this the race start then we can look at once more and it was all all okay and everything cordial at McLaren into the first corner at least yeah and P then goes outside to uh protect that position and that's what caught George Russell out was piastri uh having to slow down a lot on the outside line so McLaren got it all covered at this point and I don't think Norris expected his teammate to pull that move and we're going to go on board with George Superstar and this is where you get the formation play with the two McLaren slipstreaming pastri will come over very quickly and then slows down and then George had to get so much break on to to avoid the back of the McLaren and fed back in eventually he was third I think if he if he have been able to duck in a bit harder a bit earlier he didn't need to give so much away here we go P late on the Norris gets back off the break pedal nearly drops it in the middle of the chicane and that is where lir comes through and really McLaren did not need that going on they had a collision on lap 24 last year they almost had a collision on lap one this year and that's where Char Clair seizes his opportunist moment and squeezes through to take second place tremendous camera work there I really I was driving that car now this is the incident between niik hulkenberg who yeah he was the one that got on the Dust Ricardo on his left hand side has been noted by race control yeah Danny Rick gave him a bit of a squeeze there in fact he gave him a lot of a squeeze that's not a bad save from niik hulberg could have been a lot worse for him so George Russell there's the damage on his car that front Wing plate has gone Bradley Lord is in the Mercedes garage man in the garage for us this weekend do you need to bring George in how much down force is he losing what's the situation Bradley he's bit lost a bit bit of Arrow balance handling balance with that um loss of the M plate but no the Wing's fine we've told him the Wing's fine so he'll just be pushing on and we'll look to make adjustments on his tools on the steering wheel and also when he boxes do I remember that you have to demonstrate to the FIA You' got enough Integrity in the rest of the wing that it's safe at this point yeah I think it's I think it's pretty clear that the wing is you know performing as it should and George is running competitively so I think there's some mischievous radio messages going out there but that's just all part of the game and I think the FIA wise to it as well and presumably you'll change that at the pit stop will you uh not necessarily it'll depend what the race picture looks like at that point I think Martin and talking of that race picture Bradley R you're watching the radar I'm sure are you all worried that we might get the need for intermediate tires at least well in a sort very engineering phrase they said there's a not zero chance so there's these cells of thunderstorms popping up or near the circuit but nothing yet um close to close enough to us to make us um think change our decision making thanks ever so much Bradley Nik hulberg has come in for a new front wing and we can see why this time he's behind Yuki sonoda as DRS goes for the move down into turn one locks up and then has a collision with soda so whilst Ricardo has been noted for causing a collision with hulkenberg hulkenberg's now been noted for running into the side pod of Yuki s I'm afraid I'm afraid for n that was kind of 100% guaranteed toen happen CU they were all going to turn into the corner and as soon as you crank any steering lock in it it makes the front tires want to lock up much more easily right Oscar piast 81 of a second ahead of charir leading on lap seven of this Italian Grand Prix Carlos science is now about a second just over a second behind Lando Norris so noris not under threat necessarily with that DRS Le Hamilton runs in ma for and George Russell and Sergio Perez albon and Alonso just dropping back from that top eight we can focus on Sergio Perez as he makes his through the curve of Grande and we can look at the battle between Alex and Fernando alono we don't see graining on any cars yet we think we need to get to at least Plan B Target lap to clear [Music] traffic so the one stopper then if they're not seeing graining uh that means they can keep pushing along they want to leave a load of uh grip back into pits when they make their Pit Stop they want to use that grip up while they're out there but at the same time you don't want to open up the surface of the tire the tires are performing better than anticipated and you have to say the hard compound tires on the red bulls look pretty handy too Kar Shand at Sky control for us this afternoon he is at Sky race control I Promise You Hell hello yes sorry I am at a sky race control um just listening into the radio there the drivers are all being told that the pace is quicker than they expected on the Friday they were down in the 25s [Music] 2 keep it there for the moment ven being told stay where you are let them push the medium hard and then this race might come to you in a little while T krait in the pit Lan just to back that up watching the McLaren pit wall they didn't seem too fast to which McLaren is in the lead might feel differently but the only uh instruction to the drivers was don't make life hard for each other in that regard cofty it was a fairly clean pass Lando might not have liked it but it was a fairly clean pass and they seem happy with piastri in his position at the moment as the drivers are clearly in some kind of Tire management pH that's a hard tired RB into the garage it looks like it is as you say enough damage picked up there potentially with a clash with hulkenberg to make Yuki soda our first race retirement yeah after the Dutch Grand Prix being the fourth this season to be completed without a single retirement that's a season record by the way we got our first retirement on lap eight yeah and uh well unfortunately just behind the side pods are a lot of Radiators and all sorts of devices that clearly one of them has been damaged so top three spreading out so that that message to V and Perez was look don't chase them they're in that mid to low one minute 24s let them do that on their medium let them go burn those medium tires out I don't know if they will or not as Daniel Ricardo takes a 5-sec Time penalty for squeezing Nik hooker um we're happy around 1 minute 25 uh let let them go and do that that's that's a brave decision we're on board here with the Alpine of estan Aon to his left was his teammate Pierre gazley behind him is his teammate Pierre gazley the Alpine swapping is there and moving up into 13th Place Fernando Alonzo still chasing after Alex alvon too you can he can get see him getting a little bit closer Daniel Ricardo has got DRS Advantage behind Alonzo and Nik hulkenberg after being squeezed by Daniel Ricardo has now got a 10-sec Time penalty himself for running into the side of Yuki Sona yeah as I said that was pretty much 100% guaranteed to happen and that means uh the would really quite a dim view of that to give him the 10c penalty uh they can also give him a driveth through or a 10 seconds stop and go which is which is going to cost you about 35 seconds so they've given him the second uh least painful penalty there Yuki Coda just before he gets out the car and takes his crash helmet off I'll say this in case he might hear it his record at Monza is now did not start in 2021 finished 14th in 2022 did not start in 2023 did not finish in 2024 got the feeling he's not going to be the biggest fan of his race track when he looks back on his career whenever it comes to an end yeah and it's not their home circuit that's Z but they are largely based in ity aren't they the team on board with Fernando Alonzo making his way towards the first chicane bit so hot so dry here in Northern Italy for quite some time every time you just go fractionally off the off the track lots of d then gets kicked up for the person behind you to run straight into we saw on Bo there with Fernando he he always has especially at the start a massive scan going on his work rate's enormous just scanning making sure nobody's lunging him and the man who used to be the ultimate lunger of course is right in his mirrors Daniel Ricardo he is that was a lung too late on that occasion from Daniel Ricardo going off the track rejoining after locking his tires and even Alex Al struggling a bit breaking into turn one two head down to you some action in the Alpine garage we understand that the reason gazley is dropping back is that he can feel something not quite right at the back of the car uh they're just readying the wheel gun so I don't know whether he's going to come in is this replay you need to do c no it's live and it's Sergio Perez who's catching George Russell and that damage to the front Wing is really starting to hurt George Russell's race here Perez is right on his tail and Max tapping in is have his teammate right behind him there goes Perez with DRS 10 km an hour extra speed down the street which has been lengthened this year by 100 meters and Sergio Perez very glad that the DRS Zone has been lengthened because it was just enough for him to get past Russell yeah Russell will have less front down force and what do we got going on Magnus and Ricardo Magnus making a move on Ricardo that was very nice indeed it was we saw Ricardo didn't we struggling on the previous lap across the run off here and that was sweet as you like from Kevin Magnus but yeah for George He he'll have more will be sliding across the track it'll damage his tires earlier and the car will be less efficient aerodynamically on one of the most critical circuits Ted is been told to come into the pits you can carry on talking about Pierre gazley first though uh Pierre gazley has been into the pits change tires and is out again and just to FL out radio and Oscar do you have an opinion on plan a versus Plan B yet I think play a so far stay on the one ster yeah the one stop so if they can make it to lap 19 they'll be doing well uh right that's this is Russell's it's it's it's okay this this stop for Russell yes it'll take another 10 seconds to change the front Wing but it's within the window to stay on a one stop here for George Russell so bad but not terrible yes who we know can make a One Stop work very well and can go for a long time and a set the hard tires and has promised that he's going to eat more pizza before the race this time around than he did before Spar he's not going to be underweight to come the end of it the tire Whisperer is going to have to do it again but this time around Martin bronley is going to be losing place after place after Place whilst he's in the pits for that much longer and they finally change that front wing for it yeah you're going have to be a tire shouter from there isn't he if he wants to get any decent points um andir just dropped 610 bag Kar race control telling me that he was told to recharge his batter they to keep it above a certain level so that's given piastra 1.8 second lead as you can see on your screen and Norris still still in um there he's where he needs to be still he's fine at at the moment there I think the thing with Lando norrris and what we have seen on many occasions this season is towards the end of a stint before the pit stops last five or six laps the McLaren looks after its tires andando knows when is the right to start pushing and is quite content to sit there and be patient until the time is right well let's hope so for him in that respect lir has agreed with Plan B in his car with the Ferrari pit so of course we don't know what the plans are and they probably change them around race to race so they don't give too much away over the radio what we do know is that Ferrari are hopeful after spending a lot of time money and effort to bring a substantial upgrade package to Monza for their home race they're very hopeful that that time and money and effort is going to be well spent and well worked they they feel they have a car that has a lot of potential here as Fernando Alonzo makes his Pit Stop gets onto the hard compound tires and will try and go to the end potentially on that but 40 laps it's a long long way to go are we seeing some having to convert to a two-stop strategy here and he comes out just in front of George which was clearly the plan there for Aon Martin they desperately need some upgrades which give them clear performance now don't they ason because running behind Alex albon as he was that makes them the the fourth out of four fastest four fastest team with the Mercedes power unit yeah Fernando said after zanol you know we are the the seventh fastest car at the moment and nobody seemed to disagree with him too much at the team on board with Lando Norris how are those front tires looking as he makes his through the parabolica and within touching distance here of charir and when I say within touching distance almost you know well he is now within that one second and he's got DRS as well so he started to gain a little bit on lir who we know's been told to drop back but even after a couple of laps from dropping back Norris has slowly but surely caught up with him a little bit more yeah 345 km perh Peak speed engine singing away in eighth gear wasn't it when we were on board with Norris and this is where he slid wide oh that takes a big old nibble out of the under floor as well um he's actually been reporting under steer on the the team radio absolutely so that's what it is you you commit to second lesmo with a certain amount of speed and uh the front axle just won't give you enough grip but it's coming back at him he certainly is he's got DRS as well down towards the escar shicane karun Chandler what you got for us remember how many times this year we've heard the McLaren driver saying free air is super important this is helping Oscar pastra he's still saying plan is good he's reiterated that point even on this last lap he's got free air last time round n910 quicker than lir Norris needs to clear sh as quickly as he can if he wants to get in this fight for the win he certainly does George Russell gets suggest we do box to over take on L cler box to he's coming into the pit Norris making his pit stop but oh I tell you what was in such an eager mood to get into the pits and slow down at the last possible second he collided with the Ballard I hope he did slow down enough as he crossed the the line Ted down there yeah they also added a couple of turns of front Wing so clearly Lando not happy with the uh setup with the balance of his car in that first stint so they have made an adjustment for the front Wing to help him out let's see how this undercut goes are Ferrari going to respond no sign of any mechanics out there yet quite it's a couple of laps early cofy I'd suggest for the one stop yeah it is a bit early and also he's come out right behind estan okon in the Alpine even with a 2.2 second Pit Stop he should get past okon through CER Grand here and will hopefully clear the Alpine by the time they get to the next chicane and does so otherwise that could have been a Wheel tohe battle that he really doesn't need on a fresh of tires yeah of course that's for position so he doesn't get any blue flag assistance but he's got enough power and grip and speed to cover it anyway and Aon knows it's not his battle today so it's the undercut on charl Clair but also on Oscar piastri who leads this race in a flip to what happened last year when pastri got the undercut on Lando Norris and the two McLaren clashed on lap 24 down at the first chicane and like you Martin I really hope he got down to 80 km an hour yeah absolutely it was it was that that board that he hit with the front locked up it just slewed sideways now in the come charir to respond into the pits comes Le Hamilton to respond to what's going on V STA and perz on the hard compound tires carry on p on the medium tires carry on 2.5 seconds for the Clair 310 McLaren were faster in the pit stop sideways Le Hamilton out of his box there 2.3 seconds good stop from them Lando Norris making his way down the main straight as you can see Norris behind Shir he comes out on to the track shair behind Lando Norris so the undercut has worked for McLaren and Lando Norris moves in the sixth place but crucially ahead of charl Clair yeah that worked a treat for them didn't it now they're going to have to cover it off with pastri as well because the undercuts a very powerful with the fresh set of tires and that will give Norris some fresh air to drive into for a little while as well he'll make his way but I tell you what I think Red Bull will be like yeah we thought so they've had to get rid of those tires earlier than they ideally wanted to because they were racing each other McLaren and F were racing each other so hard yeah this is a Red Bull without that straight line speed but this gu struggle to go to uh so who's he talking about these guys is that yeah I se those that have pitted already and scientist say no we're going to stay out as pastri now pits uh from the lead science takes over the lead of the race Musta and Perez go through making his way through parabolica now as you can see is Lando Norris Alex Al goes through and continues on his way piastri at 80 km an hour making his way out of the pit Lane now and he's still ahead of his teammate Lando Norris Here Comes Lando Norris with Alex albon in between the two McLaren but they're a lot closer than they were before Lando P yeah they really needed both McLaren's out front what was that where do we p if we under cuz he thinks they should have stayed out because it was no chance that he was going to come out ahead of Lando norrris so what was the point yeah so now he's he's uh lost track position to Norris and he's got to go long way on those tires yeah so I get his point completely kind of flipping around a bit from zanol last week where shl super first stint and second stint on that one and while his first intin ciled here and it's just put him on the back foot again Daniel Ricardo is under investigation by the way failing to serve a Time penalty correctly he might have to come into the pits again or to serve another time penalty or it gets added on to his race time at the end so Alex Al still running the medium tires he started with Lando Norris right behind him and ahead of these two Oscar pastri have the two McLarens been pushing too hard with charir as well is the race falling into the hands a little bit of the two it's likely we will have to cover with the other car it'll be papy [Music] rules cover for the other car it be Pap rules team orders and a potential second stop for McLaren or team ERS don't overtake [Music] it thinking it through exactly what that means and I don't want to guess I'll say nothing um but it'll play out won't it papaya rules so team team rules and Ricardo gets another penalty then for failing to serve the first penalty properly they clearly didn't wait 5 seconds before they touched the car yeah the stopwatch was not working properly decent move there Lewis Hamilton on L stroll Hamilton up into eighth stroll hasn't pitted yet which is why those two were battling on track botas hasn't pitted yet either a hasn't pitted yet science for staff and Perez the top three also haven't pitted car SS on his 30th birthday for Ferrari leads the Italian Grand PR and this is what happened to Dani Ricard yeah instant reaction from the mechanic just to touch the front Wing to stop the car but you're not allowed to do that no he touched it and he knew he knew yeah he he went to steady the car and that was enough to get them a 10c fastest lap for Oscar piastri on these hard tires which seem to be performing pretty well so far uh the difference hard Tire ven to pastre on that last lap 1.4 seconds old hard to new hard so nther McLaren have got DRS now obviously PS3 out front doesn't unless he comes across a back marker noris is too far behind at 2.2 seconds so they're dragging lir into to the picture with them they certainly are this is turning into a fascinating Italian Grand Prix here and when we have practice for first second and third practice you often see some some race runs on a on a hard Tire we haven't had that so far this weekend track is cooling we've gone from 54° nearly to about 47° now because the cloud cover is coming over that will help the hard tire and stop it overheating too much but no one really knows how long they're going to go for and is that Max for stappen suffering from steer and taking him wider than he would have wanted so the Ferrari drives been told we're seeing graining on the Red Bull and that's you can see Perez is pretty close isn't he to this happen uh an income science so after leading the Italian Grand Prix he now makes his Pit Stop lap 20 of this race for St and Perez continue on SS was running the medium Tire you'd imagine for a oneop strategy Carlos science is pitting at exactly the right time but he comes out in sixth place which is a net fourth currently but a fairway behind the the three that that will be leading the race when Red Bull pits and science comes out ahead of the Alp the bestan ofon and that is pretty crucial for him and also crucial that he's ahead of Lewis Hamilton is his main Challenger in this one Alon hasn't pitted yet must staford has a 2.1 second advantage over Sergio Perez Oscar pastri is at the moment round about 10 seconds behind Max for Stafford and laughing about a second faster on his hard tires that were put on just a few laps ago so here's the battle for sixth place then SS ahead of Hamilton how long does it take to warm up those hard compound tires and how's leis Hamilton got a slight Advantage because his tires are nicely warmed up because he's been running them for a couple of laps we'll see and he's got DRS as well has Hamilton on the run towards the escar scientist tires four laps younger around this circuit rip off there in the middle of the track looks or some Dey and Ted has more news right Martin uh while you've been talking I've had a further think about papaya rules and asked around at McLaren uh it's so it's just it's a message not a verbal message the staff the staff have been told he just go a little bit faster if you want okay so the papaya rules are not uh only cut them open when they're nice and juicy uh it is actually the rules M between the two drivers and like we saw in Hungary do you remember when when one had to give the place back to the other so it's it's the Rules of Engagement the fairness between the two drivers and I think unfortunately for Lando what will Joseph is saying there C you need to do this uh this is Russell making his way from the back up to Ninth Place unfortunately for Lando I think what will Joseph is saying is that I'm afraid we're going to have to do some things to protect past's lead with the Ferraris that's my interpretation McLaren aren't telling me uh exactly what that mean what what the order will be but that's my interpretation that we're going to have to cover for the other car pastri who is the net leader really of this race when the two Reed's pit he'll take over the lead an Australian starting second for McLaren at Monza last time that happened 2021 Daniel Ricardo went on to win the race yeah I would imagine Norris is seeding about that second chicane in I think he thought he got that one covered but this is Kevin Magnus and Pierre gazley Magnus on the inside into the chicane did he leave his breaking too late did he cause a collision race control might pass that on to the Stewarts yeah he was out of control when he arrived he was in he was in the right place uh in terms of he he he deserved some space on the corner but he wasn't under control yeah this papaya rules business I wonder if anyone's told Lando nor he's just at fastest lap of the race gaining a bit on his teammate Oscar piastri maybe the rules there he he he might want to sort that out himself as I say VRI Bas hasn't pitted yet he has Fernando Alonzo behind him but not for long and Fernando Alonzo makes his way past twice a former winner here V botas former Podium sitter here and up into 10th Place box box Max ven is being told he and his teammate Sergio Perez running one and two in this race first time Sergio Perez has running the top two here for for quite some time it has to be said I think since since the early stages of the Season China in April so they're fed up with those hard compound tires after just 22 Laps on the Red Bull with full tanks of fuel and it suggests they won't get to the end of the race doesn't it they' got to do now 31 Laps on a set of so even with the fuel burning down and putting less stress on the tires I wonder if we're going to this is an indication here Mar that we're heading for a two stop race I think we are heading for a two stop race and Lando has been on the radio saying as much and that's probably why the two McLaren are pumping some fast lap times in now because again they may as well use all the grip up if they're going to stop again 6.2 seconds Max waspp was station in his pit box hard tires again so he's got a pit again yes that's a two stoer for Max as he comes out onto the RAC track behind estan oon in eighth place his teammate Sergio you allowed to race Oscar papy rules so that is papy rules then you are allowed to race and that then makes a lot of sense as to why Lando Norris was pushing to get closer to him and why Oscar piastri has now picked up his Pace to try and avoid this as well they'll be right on to presum they'll P Perez shortly as well at red right rear wouldn't come off very easily took quite a few goals that's why Max was lost six seconds so red looking looking good in the early stages and and a lot of their good work undone by losing four seconds at the pit stop and they're normally the pit stop meisters aren't they uh and that is why then when he came out uh he wasn't very far ahead of George Russell who had obviously a nose change on the pit stop yeah Max wasapp not been happy all weekend long he certainly won't be happy with that here comes Sergio Perez to make his Pit Stop pastry takes over the lead once again of this race and he's one and a half seconds clear of his teammate Lando Norris I'm just going to put Perez ahead of Ven you would think so wouldn't you ven uh will get some DRS to help his Pace down the main straight Perez making his way out of the pit Lane ven just passes the commentary box down the main streets towards turn one and he is Ahad of his teamate Sergio we do this then uh we just get on now Max so yeah V and perz just a few car length between what did that radio message mean just go flat out just go for it now you know all that management have we seen them yeah you're right did St ahead of Perez I thought ven's long Pit Stop might have might have made the difference there but uh it didn't and he stays ahead but it's like right all the all the uh cunning plans early on and managing tires yeah forget all that just go for it just go for it that's what we want to see anyway Kar see who what do McLaren do now cofy because they're saying Plan B is where they're heading they've been telling Lando about this he says yep I confirm we should do plan B which we think is a two stop do they un allow Norris to undercut piastri do they play the team order in the pit stop with the strategy and get Norris in front for the world championship battle good question and I don't know the answers Martin as we see Kevin Magnuson who's had quite the race it has to be said making his move on Pierre gazley yeah gazley was having to charge his battery up but we're starting to see a lot of marbles discarded rubber on the side there it is on the right corner of your screen that will come into play later on if we need to get some overtaking done offline looks like it could be even dirtier at that point and Sergio Perez makes his way past estan Aon who is still trying a One Stop strategy in this race Alex albor gets past vry botas who is trying to do the same thing and I think everyone else is committing here to push hard and go for a two stoer Ted down to you well we'll see we'll see uh could could have a safety car crafting haven't had one for a while mylander is working part time at the moment we haven't had a safety car for the last six SC three since Canada is that right but yeah just confirmation from McLaren uh Team rules what they are papaya rules clear rules as to how Lando and Oscar race each other but they are allowed to race within those agreed parameters I wonder if that applied to the way they did on the first lap I think it must have done because as we've said before it was fair play foros wasn't it it certainly was I'm sure there will be plenty of debate about that between now and the next race in Baku and I'm sure niik rosbo have a few things to say about it to this race with Simon Len In The Paddock pastri leads 1.8 seconds the gap between himself and Lando Norris shair runs in third it's a McLaren one two currently Lando Norris lost a place to sh declair on the opening lap got it back by stopping earlier at the first we think first round of pit stops Carlos SS is a bit of a distant fourth currently and Kevin Magnus who has a 10-sec Time penalty for causing a collision is the charge once again and this time it's B botas with an easier overtake Magnus stopped already in this race botas hasn't yeah if Magus doesn't stop again they'll obviously add that to his elapse time at the end of the Grand Prix so again we saw him plowing didn't he with his front axle lock um they've been in the wars haven't they H so they both had a penalty early on hulberg actually was on the receiving end of a driver who was penalized Hing straight forward you feel a bit for Nik hulkenberg he's down in 18 kind of fancied a chance at fringes of the points shall we say they can they can turn so much coming out of parabolica they're not hanging on to the desperate edge of the racetrack they sort of turn it in now and and take a shorter line and save a meter or two as it stands in the championship at the moment uh Red Bull will end this race on 448 points McLaren this race on 448 points McLaren currently have a fastest lap bonus and if they keep that fastest lap bonus uh that will might just give them I think the uh the championship lead by a point but a long way to go yet in in that one down the main straight with Fernando Alonzo estan running his own race at the moment and watching a lot of other cars uh passing by but he'll get all that time back when they stop again and he only stops what he's hoping yeah it's cost Red Bull quite dearly hasn't it we go down the inside this is Daniel Ricardo into the first chican as the Alpine of Pierre gazley still ahead of him good defending that by Pierre gazley but Ricardo is going to carry this fight on a little bit his teammate Yuki soda the only retirement in this Grand so far Ricardo trying to put on a show switches right to left and still can't find a way past but gazley then locks up goes straight over the run off area and gives the place to Ricardo which was the sensible option there before the Stewart got involved yeah so he kept position and which they look at more and more now he kept positioned by running off the track fair enough is flying out front isn't he so the McLaren's pace is beginning to really show up now and Ven and Perez are over a pit stop behind now um the two McLarens which is painful for them Mercedes the pace in this race I thought they would um although this phase looks better for them and you'd have to say Ferrari had probably been a little bit quicker than we expected just talk my calculations uh with that fastest lap bonus it does put Red Bull and McLaren level on points going into uh the next race in Baku and red will continue to lead the Constructor Championship by virtue of having won more races this season but given that they were what 115 points clear at one stage a lot tighter than many were expecting but McLaren can't relax on that llar SS is sitting there pretty uh into with for Ferrari with Pace SS of course pitted quite a bit later than those around him on lap 19 Russell on lap 11 for example Norris 14 so um scci has got you know 10% of the race distance less use of in his tires at the moment so we'll keep an eye on him as to whether he thinks he can One Stop from there but lir keeping the two McLaren very honest we're 29 out of 53 here with all this pushing that's going on and a lack of Tire management if the clock stops at under 1 hour 14 minutes 19.83% but we're looking for anything less than that 1 hour 14.9 Ted I hope you got your stopwatch on you I have but I didn't write it down can you say it for me again 1 hour 1499 so 1 hour 14 minutes 19. 838 seconds 838 seconds got it thank you very much remember that everybody um it's this Bas who's the only one apart from es not to stop yet being overt by Dan estan and Val botas having the I PID for my tires myself uh uh award and yeah neither of them in yet maybe sort of goal hanging for a safety C but all of a sudden Cy and towards what you're saying is this is a very quick race that happened very quickly is that we're already in on the next lap into the window for the second stops comes around sounding more exciting well you know but I'm not convinced that the McLaren have to make a second stop those tires look okay at the moment they'll all be part of a computational uh computational comp that will be going on on the pit wall that do make any sense got sit down the glass of water you're overheating said what we do know is that the Red Bulls do have to stop again started on hards running on hards currently and then they've got the option when do they stop again do they put the soft tires on for a dart to the line or the medium tires and they might get a fastest lap with that but they've got a they've got George Russell sitting there as well on the ti of Sergio Perez having made his way back up after the front nose being changed and front Wing so um in terms of the Constructor Championship I'm thinking of there debut today for Franco kapino we're riding on board at the moment this might be the first overtake we see of this young Argentine youngest driver on the grid 21 years old and 97 days he's got Pierre gazley in his sights he's going will to whe down into turn one Franco kapino gets past Pierre gazley a very nice overtake indeed to take 15th Place yeah was clean clean enough yeah he'll have enjoyed that and I think his longest run was eight laps in a form one C the start of this race so he's Way Beyond that of course pastri now into the 1 minute 22s with the new fastest lab of the Grand Prix that was some 710 faster than Lando Nores on the previous tour we know the E and flow a little bit with the batteries let's go to Ru sky race control Thanks Martin let's noris starting to struggle this is when Red Bull starting to have graining around lap 15 in the stin yeah just on that point I'm just thinking back to Budapest because think of the fact that in that on that occasion they use Norris to pit first to to protect behind the car behind lir is getting closer George Russell is getting closer too on Sergio Perez and they're going through willto whe into the first chicane Russell comes out but he had to go off the track to do it so he should let Sergio Perez pass him and is's doing so but they avoided contact Perez now does get ahead of George Russell and is he free to go for the overtake has he given enough of that Advantage back again is he going for the overtake no he just slots in behind Perez through to the the next chicane and Lando Norris has just made a mistake on this lap and as you can see has charir right behind him and ready to pounce yeah turn four had an incident that's the second chicane and Norris then presumably went down the Escape road we going a replay of that and that's really dropped him away from piastri and put him in under a lot of pressure from charl lir yeah he's managed to survive into turn one this time around but this is a battle that McLaren probably did not need for their man to be having at this stage of the race Kar CH we go back to you at race control just to finish the point Cy about pastri the reason he's been pushing is setting those fastest lap he doesn't want to be undercut by Norris and be in that position where they have to do that awkward swapping off the places that's why he's been pushing to open the C of over 3 seconds and this mistake which we're about to see cost Lando 1.7 to piastri uh so into turn four should be nice and easy but if you're struggling for grip it isn't yeah he sensed the lock up was coming and that is you know pastries look faster anyway it must be said and uh this is where we saw Russell and Perez Perez didn't leave him a whole lot of space there but George Russell giving that place back what is he doing she G me the position and she raise me he didn't overtake you though Sergio so it's not like he go gain an advantage a lasting Advantage yeah I don't think I don't think Russell did anything wrong there Lando Norris is pitting so after the mistake at turn four once again L Norris is going to pit here the second McLaren is pitting ahead of the lead McLaren but there is a big difference in terms of time on track in between the te mlar and that was quite a slow pit stop a second slower than it was for Lando Norris at the first pit stopping is going to come out here very very level with Max BPP happen you can just see on your screen there disappearing in a turn one Norris comes out ahead of Sergio Perez and George Russell and that battle that's going on yeah stpp out of position there really he's got to stop again because he's only used two lots of Hard compound and once again George Russell having an adventure or two down in the first chicane but Norris then really that that's released piastri now pastri they can work at will and I think when Clair PS that'll uh that'll be challenging Norris again for track position so Norris needs to use his tires get a couple of at least one good outlab in there and make up for the deficit of that poor stop slow Pit Stop Ted krait was watching it oh yeah me can anything else go wrong for for Lando Norris today so the problem was the front right it was actually slow coming off all the other tires had gone on the front again but thean well they need to find out because he's going to be vulnerable in the latter stages of this race and then the the mechanic went on for a second stab just to make sure the front right was done up but lost the time let's wait and see if Ferrari respond and Mercedes are out in the pit Lane as well when will Oscar come in well if he feels his tires are okay he'll carry on I think for at least another four laps or so someone is coming into the pits in the background there hulkenberg a had stop George Russell is pitting again so that race witho Perez will stop for a while but this might give Mercedes the undercut oh I say that it's a slow stop the undercut on Sergio Perez and he's lost at least a couple of seconds there and that could be crucial in their undercut attempt on the Red Bull it's OD isn't it this time of the year they're all so into racing pit stops and we've seen some some difficult ones you get a lot of heat in the axle the wheel nuts the wheel sort of thing which can be a challenge on this circuit especially with such heavy breaking but we've seen an unusually high number of uh kind of ordinary pit yeah we have uh Norris is pushing hard his teammate Oscar P he's just done a 1231 it was a 10th of a second clear of Shir the Gap five and a half seconds between piastri and lir we are on board at the moment with Lance stroll in the Aston Martin he's right behind Franco kapino in the Williams behind lir and and a long way behind lir is the other Ferrari of caros ss here's George Russell is this the incident we're going to see with Sergio Perez once again I think it is he just dipped it's a second but he dipped a tire into the dust and that might have prompted the the call to bring him into the pits yeah he got a little bit wide on the way in didn't he it's it's been a tough one for George hasn't it especially down there Kevin Magnus but in more overtakes in this race Kevin magnon than I think he has in the last five or six races put together that was Alex Al that time around Magnus currently running in 10th Place extraordinary much of the gravel we could hear from magnuson's car wasn't it and Al having to go off into the Escape Route right rear it was the nuts getting stuck wasn't it the whe gun just not engaging on that right rear sticking nuts will nut a bit of a problem here today but like you say Martin it is tremendously hot for a Formula One race and we often get bit stop problems when it's hot you do it adds to the problem as I say in these heavy breaking zones as well generates incredible temperature down the spindle and the wheel n the wheel so Ted let's head back down to you so you mentioned Alex Al fighting with Kevin Magnus he's been reminded Albert's been reminded by his Engineers that Magnus has a 10-sec penalty still to be served uh and mag Alin saiding what do you want me to do race him or just stay here I could probably get onto Alonso in p8 alin's in quite strong on the radio cofy accusing the team of being indecisive once again that's something we've heard before from isn't it but yeah case of I used to be decisive but now I'm not so sure at Williams Sergio Perez pitting doesn't surprise me this medium tires going on he had to make another pit stop he's doing this I think to protect himself against George R is just making his way around the parabolic now as Perez at 80 km an hour trumbl down the pit Lane we're watching Perez's teammate Max was Staffing as well as Perez comes out onto the RAC trck proper is he ahead of George Russell he is only just ahead of George Russell who you can't see at the moment but is right there in close contention yeah it's quite a l pit Lane but also your time loss on to those going down the pit straights High because so top the top speed all the way past the pit is very high and that's what makes it an extra penalty really uh for stop this why ideally a one stop that quite George Russell had to stop early had front wing damage after contact on the opening lap and that's rather forced him into a two stop race but he's back right behind Sergio Perez as you can see the Gap about a second at the moment perz on the medium Tire Russell on the hard Tire could that be a bit of a difference maxen is going to have to go on to the medium Tire to and might that not be the one you want to be on at the end of this when it's possible to defend you want me to race him yes please yeah and him being Lando Norris who as you can see is gaining sector by sector lap by lap on maxen and has brought that gap down to just under 1.4 seconds yeah that's an interesting call isn't it it's basically like how much of our race do we want to compromise fighting Lando imagine Lando should if he gets a DRS down the pit R be had to sail past well with Red Bull being the slowest in the speed trap and qualifying you're absolutely right Sergio Perez makes a move on Alex Alon into the first chicane ALB once again gets out of the way this time George Russell gets past Alex albon as well and that's two laps in a row that Al's been into the gravel and seen the car go past him and he finds himself back down place now and is rather ruining at his race currently stroll into the pits for what is his second stop in the race and let's look at the top four here Martin Le Hamilton gaining on Carlos SS here we haven't really talked about Le Hamilton a lot in this osc do you think there's any chance we can one stop I don't think so is pretty pretty dead understood and Hamilton pitting now and I just wonder if they fancy a chance of getting at Carlo sence in this race when science has to stop again yeah so it's been a better second phase for Mercedes there's no doubt about that and Lewis is kind of there or there about isn't he but at the moment uh McLaren have enough Pace to cover this off OS saying that and and they're both complaining now about left front tire orando saying earlier on I just don't know what I'm doing wrong because I'm I'm upsetting my my front I think it's the lack of data as here goes George Russell and he's forced onto the grass there wasn't the car's to try and get past he does get past Sergio Perez just about hangs on to the edge of the track and does make the move George Russell up e that was naughty from Perez that was too late day late in a dollar short and he's got that place back momentarily he's got a front Wing ahead of Russ's going to get the inside line going into the next chicane under breaking manages to squeeze that Mercedes pass the Red Bull but I'm not sure that's the last you're going to hear of that incident as into the pits comes Oscar pastri Ted to you another slow stop I think pastri might have run over someone's foot there was a little bit of a wobble as he squared up he didn't lose too much time did we get a total time on it it felt like 2.8 seconds 2.9 but he was certainly slow slow in we'll get a replay in a bit no we didn't But Here Comes Max was Tappen and Lando Norris and you can see how much slower that pit stop was by the between pastri and Ven and pastri and Norris vasta's got to stop again but that slow stop has brought Lando Norris back into play I think here a little bit although because he's got staing in the way at the moment and therefore in the dirty air of the Red Bull and sliding around and probably hurting his tires a little bit more but again will science think he can get through with a one stopper he might be taking some pain in the final few laps at the moment Carlos SS in second place Shir in first place uh Shir has only pitted once as as caros SS could Ferrari be going to the end and when everyone else has gone and committed to this this strategy could they be about to Spring the ultimate surprise let's have a look at this from the head on Martin Perez reacts late there yeah George already started the move so uh that was uh a little bit scary George Well to keep his fo in and then of course uh was compromised through the exit and serg came straight back out in it's all happening the Italian Grand Prix and it might be that Lando Norris is about to overtake Max ven ven leading the championship Norris is his nearest Challenger Norris wants to try and get pasta and he's got DRS Vera forces in the long way round and that means that Lando Norris might just have to be content to sit behind the rear wing of that red bull for just couple of Corners more and try once again going into the next shic through the curve of Grande we go now speed increasing all the time you can see the harvesting going on on that Red Bull but not so much that he can't defend and Norris well will be a little less content to head into that second chicane still behind the championship leader yeah he might well be there until the pit straight again Mindy and we see Max charging his battery up presumably for a good defense down the pit straight and this is hurting Norr race certainly is he's got DRS once again but it's because of the the skinnier rear wings that they run here you don't dump off so much drag in the drag reduction zones with the drag reduction system it's only about 10 km an hour so you don't get that bigger harm shall we say to shove you forward that you get at places like zamort last week yeah no DRS down this straight uh into parabolica but he's got to have a better chance this time of streaming and then dsing and decent straight line speed this is Norris's chance he should get this one done it's his time and he's going to have to take it as pastri sets a new fastest lap dando Norris pulls out from behind the Red Bull and gets past Max for stappen who locks up into the bargain trying to defend Norris then up into fourth it's the Ferraris that the leading one two it's pastri in third Lando Norris currently fourth but team m is in the box seat in terms of the McLaren battle are Ferrari trying to go to the end and can they make it to the end and make this a historic win for them this weekend because McLaren by committing to a two-stop strategy might still find that when the checker flag comes out there's a couple of cars ahead of him here yeah they're going to have to if they do that mlar going to have to overtake to win this race they need a lot of pace now to undo that extra stop against the Ferraris in front of them and uh well suddenly it's starting to really come alive karon yeah Ferrari are I think going to go to the end and certainly McLaren thinks so that's why they were pushing Norris to get a move on and get past for staff and that's why past's done a new fastest lap as we see this replay cofy fairly standard move but so basically state of play 16 seconds between Oscar piastri and charl Clair 11 laps to go this is this is a great opportunity for Ferrari to the win here 16 seconds 11 laps to go one and a half seconds Pi quicker than sh Clair on that last lap as L stroll goes into the kitty litter and Max foren gets the fresh pair of medium boots onto his car and he's going to come out behind Lewis Hamilton in sixth place and of course what Ferrari have got is a rear gunner in Carlos s sitting there in second place as well to try to arrest the progress of piastri and maybe Norris too so at the moment then Ferrari appear to have rolled the dice for a one stoer and they're commanding the race at this phase they certainly are that's George Russell making his move past Kevin Magnus and up into seven five years ago today the pr are going to try one they think it's difficult but they might as well try so this is qualifying now in the words of Stew just try first there you go well said stew as they say five years ago today Belgium 2019 charl lir won for Ferrari he repeated that didn't he with a win at Monza in 2019 as well Carlos SS trying to become the third driver ever to win on his birthday third driver driving for Ferrari on his birthday they are currently the one two battle for seconds sees Oscar piastri arriving on the scene with Carlos SS in a couple of laps yeah birthday boy sence got a great Jance here to arrest the progress of the McLaren to help his teammate out but I'm going to imagine the Ferrari be a little bit gripless in the final lap or two charlot Clair put his tires on what four laps before caros SS as well so you'd imagine he'll start to struggle a bit more than his teammate even though he's got the the Clean Air in front of him a little bit sooner as down the straet we go Sergio Perez behind Kevin Magnus is in Ninth Place Magnus looking in his mirrors to see where he is but he's a bit too far back to make the overtake and while they go through the first chicane and Oscar pastri makes his way to the escari chicane Ted Kravitz in the pit Lane what you got well I'm looking at one pit wall Gantry and that's the back of Fred B's head and everybody else on the Ferrari pit wall wow if they can pull off this one stop that would be incredible and the toosi just twigging on as they was kind of well where there is there we go a replay no we're looking at the state of char Clair's tires if you like Stripes They're lovely a few grains of rubber on there aren't they cofy I'll leave you to explain again what ti graining is but the toos twigging when they didn't see a Ferrari stop that what they're going to try and do and it's well it's tired death or Grand Prix glory for Ferrari today but uh well they're doing the lap times I suppose after being publicly outed for getting undercut with charir earlier on with the McLaren then uh they're thinking well why not try this I love what Ferrari have done today Martin whether it's whether it's glory or it's glorious failure at the last they've done something different and they have taken the race to McLaren and they've put down a challenge here and it it's this is going to be absolutely thrilling and while this is going on with pastri hunting down SS ven is also hunting down Lewis Hamilton after making his pit stop yeah and at the moment with Hamilton 31 seconds behind lir lair's got a free pit stop any so that's the that's the what they're saying they got nothing to lose have they they can stretch it out and stay ahead of the McLaren if science can hold pastri and Norris up for a while they've got they' got a chance and and if not they've lost nothing they'll be third and fourth anyway providing they don't drop off a cliff of grip and they do something about it soon enough and if you look at the bigger picture in the driver's Championship Lando Norr is currently scoring 12 points Max mustaf scoring eight points there only a four point in Lando's favor that's how things have not worked out for him so far today Oscar pastri has DRS down the straet so does Carlos SS because Pier GLE was about to Beed but there's just a couple of car L between Ferrari and cop that's he'll try and as as he can that could make the difference with laps running out between his teammate winning or his teammate just falling at the final hurdle and yeah keeps ahead of pastri into the next chicane and all the while this is helping shair yeah smile P there he could have had a little bit of a look or a lung and he lost himself some time just patience and he knows he'll get it done down the pit straight and Ferrari then complaining but yeah science science's tires went on on lap 19 the clear 15 Oscar pastri pulls out from behind the rear wing of the Ferrari of caros and moves into second place a very important move did it under DRS but he did it as soon as he possibly could now on lap 45 of 53 and lapping round about a second a lap faster than Char Clair the race leader he needs about half a second a lap more Pace to try and get anywhere near that Ferrari and these tires Martin once they get to the edge of their performance life they drop off pretty quickly yeah we got we got an exciting end if ifir sticks with this we've got a very exciting end noris two and a half seconds behind sights as well in the 1 minute 22s on that lap and but Hamilton's charging along there as well so that that'll cat Ferrari's attention because if they if they get too bold with it all um and and they fail llar and SS will fall behind Hamilton that's very true and the more Hamilton chares P stop that you were talking about rather rather disappears well an end to the race we're going to get here fando Norris he's he's got the pace advantage over Carlos SS he hasn't got the pace advantage over his teammate Oscar piastri there will be questions I'm sure in the debrief today as to what happens on the first lap with piastri overtaking Norris and whether that was the the right thing to do and it probably was in terms of racing and both drivers being free to race well after hungry it's more points that Lando's lost to his teammate at that time it wasn't the right thing for the team because I think they could have worked with each other and and got themselves a bit of breathing space absolutely the right thing for Oscar piastri but I think on balance so far you have to say past's been the faster package anyway through this gr he has the Clean Air that he had by leading the race for so long really help the pace as well Carlo s's pace is absolutely dropping off here as Norr a little look but like his teammate beforehand has to settle for going through the first chicane behind the Ferrari now he's got much much better traction coming out of that chicane and he's got much much better traction going through the curve of Grande curve of Grande as I'm told it should be pronounced has he got enough under breaking to squeeze p no he hasn't presumably the team will have told him and break balance plus one leave me alone with this if I don't do things to ask don't ask good fun that's a fair point isn't it so presumably McLaren will have told Norris that piastri got through here and this is the place to do it well it's he's a little bit further back in Oscar pastri and he's not going to do it on this occasion he's not no DRS down the next straight either so maybe SS of was having learned his lesson first time got a bit smarter with his b in defense here he comes no DRS but he's getting the slipstream isando Norris and he's going to stick as close as he can to the Ferrari through the parabolic that looks like he's close enough now with the DRS Zone and it being 100 me longer to mount the challenge down this straight there goes Lando Norris that's the easy move that he was hoping for maybe a lap ago but he is up now into third and this is so so important for Norris in that champ challenge because now it's 15 points for him today and it's eight points for Max Musta so it's a seveno swing and we come down to a 63 point lead going to Baku as it stands at the moment make that 64 points because V obviously has the fastest lap in this race and that put having to wait to get past s has put Norris four and a half seconds of drift doesn't he of P this is that move on Lando Norris on caros I'm just just going to ask the question Martin because I'm sure there are a lot of lown norrris fans that will be asking this question if charlot Clair in the last couple of laps looks like he's going to hold on and win this race should McLaren for Norris's driver Championship challenge say to piastri let your teammate buy because it's another it's another three points isn't it yeah uh strictly speaking they should but I I don't think they're minded to do that the tires are looking a little bit nasty look at the you can see the the duller patch on his right front there's a bit of a passenger that right front in many of these Corners um so he is now 11.9 ahead of Norris and eight ahead of piastri but crucially Hamilton is getting very close toa's Pit Stop can people in the background please be awake I know this is position but uh it's important yes copy that Max I I wonder if Max is a bit concerned about George Russell behind him as well because Russell's got a little bit more Pace um I'm not sure he's 15 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton but Russell is is reducing that Gap I know it's four and a half seconds but it is important and he senses that importance every point is precious yeah well he's starting to see his world championship lead eing away a little bit and great shot of Oscar pastri who driven a very fine race can he now take the victory Ted what have you got for us that squares that uh that message from ven can everyone in the background please stay awake I want to keep my position squares with what Russell's being told on his team radio can you hear can you hear every time micophone every time now you know what I saying the toos have tweaked what's going on with with the death and Glory lir Pit Stop strategy every time lir comes by they're thinking can make a chance the Tios want theair they're powering him on to try and get this keep this tire alive can tires here cofy can they hear the toosi scream only if you whisper yeah come on well he is going to have to whisper them but they're trying to the toosi trying to scream Char Clair to Victory but yeah Russell has been told by his engineer on the last lap or two he thinks they can get past the St and uh this is a bit like George Russell did in Spar isn't it sort of a counter strategy didn't look possible suddenly that's uh Char Clair's brother Arthur's also a race driver of course um yeah and pastri only took half a second out of him on the previous tour pastri in a little bit of traffic now he's got clear a Char Clair goes through the escari chican Oscar pastri halfway down the straight going under the banking as the Clair makes his exit through that chicane started fourth Ferrari fancied their chances here today they a Sur with a counter strategy to the two McLarens and it is working very very well for at the moment and don't forget they think they're in the hunt for the Constructor Championship to and so they should be because there'll only be 40 points behind Red Bull come the end of this race and red bu will hold on to the lead by 10 points as it stands and the toosi are ready for the biggest garden party the Royal Gardens and the Royal parks at Monza have had in quite some time pest is not making enough Paces s seconds to go you've got three laps including this one which means he needs thick end of two seconds a lap doesn't he yeah to uh to catchair let alone pass him that's a tall order the big upgrade package that came here to Monza why do you spend all that time and effort to bring a big upgrade package to Monza will you do it if your Ferrari because winning here is absolutely everything for the and a team that is the deao national Italian team in Formula 1 and we are on lap 51 and there's just over six seconds between lir Ferrari and the toos celebration for victory Norris is not making the impression on his teammate he's going to have to settle for third place as it stands here currently caros SE down in fourth Lewis Hamilton comfortable in fifth ahead of Max VPP who is watching George Russell because Russell's now just over seconds behind and that Gap has come down once again the day that was going to be all about McLaren and a potential one two they've been usurped a little bit by Ferrari here but we're not at the finish yet are we and that's the difference between piastri and Lando Norris who can easily see his teammate down the main straight yeah 1.1 seconds fast to piastri he needs at least two per lap and that that's not doable I don't think that's doable unless lir absolutely runs out a grip in the next few miles he's got it covered leave me alone I know what I'm doing is what Kimmy Reen once said we kind of have the charl version a few laps ago and he definitely does know what he's doing here however his tires are starting to go and we are still a lap and a half away from the checker flag it's not over until it's over but he is the race leader and on course Ferrari to be the third different conru to win in the last three races and none of those are called Red Bull that is how this season has transformed and come alive my goodness what a Podium this is going to be the best podium in the world as well to boot a Ferrari leads into the final lap and here in Monza wow tremendous he's going to come down the main streight now with a Lap to go let's have a listen to the Roar and I hope you can hear that on the world feed and on the effects microphone cuz we can not only hear it in a commentary box we can feel it in the commentary box three and a half miles to go for shair who knows for well what it's like to win for Ferrari at moner and he's about to do it for the second time so P took 1.8 out of him on the previous lab and uh that means he'll be kind of to near him at then down okon you know actually more one stopped than two stopped in that race um and it's certainly uh it certainly worked out for charir it certainly hasir pulls in in a few seconds time to P1 what a season you're a Ferrari driver from Monaco you want to win in Monaco you desperately want to win here as well pastan Norris The Joint top scorers now the last five gr pre with 85 Points each what we expected came true and the basic itan extends to P Martin but I think he was thaning the strategy Department there he wasn't ordering a quatro St that's for sure yeah I is probably thinking about the call he made earlier on in the race of why did you do this to me and of course it's worked out well but he had to keep those tires intact they look pretty ugly at the end but they'll do just fine he might have had a little bit more Wing just to help protect those tires than Carlos SS the tires with a pickup now to to help add just a little bit of extra weight because the cars as we found out a spark always always uh get a way to make sure that they they are legal during the uh during the Grand Prix itself uh I've got a translation for you uh from sh Clair's race engineer you make me dream he said to sh declair what a season what a season sh declair responded what a season he wins in Monaco he wins in Monza Freddy verer Monaco and Monza wow sh Clair responded with this season is a heart attack how good are the highs thanks to the factory here at home again like in 2019 you are Mega this is going to be wild isn't it with the crowd underneath that Podium podiums halfway across the track I don't care who you root for in Formula 1 who cheer on and support you you should never and I'm sure you are never uh fail to be impressed by Italian celebrations Ferrari celebrations at the you say to Diego in our meeting this morning so how you going to win this race then and he looked at me because it's a standard question we ask him and he looked at me and for once didn't say we're not he said well let me tell you Al didn't tell us that they were going to do a One-Stop strategy but he did hint that it was between a one and a two and he had to take things as they come mlar will be licking their wounds from that one but I I I don't know could the big question McLaren is could they have one stopped y should they have one stopped as Zack Brown and Fred rer known each other for many many years share the congratulations the big questions at McLaren will be what happened on the first lap should Oscar have gone for it did that then hurt our strategy did we push too hard yeah in that opening strategy so that we then had to commit to a two stop yeah because we de clear in the middle of them as as it ended up it it meant they had to you know they had to cover that off they they didn't get out front and then control the race because they had the the championship Challenger as it were even though Lando is trying to play Down talk of a championship challenge he was the one behind yeah and he was the one pushing his teammate Oscar piastri there there's a lot to talk about after this race and I I have no idea how long it took and I don't know whether we got near to that 1 hour 14 minutes and 19 seconds it felt like a quick one yeah and I think we've got confirmation there that piastri has zero interest in l Us's World Championship Nico rosberg he knows what it's like to win here did it in 2016 he's hosting the post race interviews this could be noisy Formula One at its very very best it's completely unpredictable at the moment Ferrari catching that surprise win here today Lando um I'm sure we have to start with that turn four overtake that Oscar did on you right after the start did he catch you by surprise uh of course cuz he got past but um yeah I don't know I don't know what I should have done differently there if I break one meter later uh we probably would have crashed so um something we'll look at but uh I mean Ferrari just drove a better race today especially Charles he uh he did a very good job so just had off today did you ever was the one stop ever a possibility for you and you're chatting with your engineers or something was never considered uh I mean we considered it the whole race but uh not possible with um with the amount of graining that I had so uh yeah um um it's a tough one we knew it would be tied but just with our car and some of the limitations we have it wasn't possible today so we uh we knew it we knew that could be a possibility so um I we disappointed of course but uh um yeah frow did a better job they had a better car today and that's H off to them in order to fight for staffen for the championship you really need all the points all the time and and now there's Oscar you know who's kind of in between there and taking points away from you as well what's your thoughts on that but on to him he did a good job he got past me and he deserves it right thank you very much Lando congrats anyways on uh on third place there's the Stampede heading under the podium for the celebrations Oscar that was a great race from you um definitely I think you did all you could but I'm sure you're still very very disappointed with that end result yeah it hurts I'm not going to lie it hurts aot a lot um did a lot of things right today you know there was a lot of question marks on the strategy going into the race um yeah from the position we were in with the the tires looking like they did doing a One Stop seemed like a very risky call and in the end it was right so uh yeah very very happy with uh with the pace with the race that I managed to achieve um just when you finish second at hurs the team had asked you hey do you want try that one stop or not do you think in hindsight you should have gone for it or actually really that tire was just gone uh in hindsight yes but uh it's you know everyone's a legend on Monday after the race or or you know at the checker flag um and today unfortunately we got it a bit wrong and and you know myself being a big part of that um you know we we had everything to lose from being in the lead of the race Charles could could try something a bit different uh he was going to finish third either way and um um yeah picked the picked the right gamble today you know the mediums were were getting destroyed and even the hards on the Red Bull at the start looked pretty dead and uh my front left was was pretty heavily grained just uh we didn't didn't expect it to clear back up again which uh which it did so yeah painful thank you very much Oscar great drive anyways today and there's always next race out to try and get that win again and now we will welcome the winner [Applause] the Charles you are the king of Italy right now I mean wow wow wow that is just so awesome it's an incredible feeling uh actually I thought that the first time will uh just felt like this and then the second time if there was a second time wouldn't feel as special but my got the emotions in the last few laps exactly the same like in 2019 just watching the grand stand inside of the track which is tricky but uh yeah incredible I mean Monaco and Monza are the two races that I want to win every year obviously I want to win as many races as possible and the world championship as soon as possible but uh these are the two most important races of the season and I managed to win them this year so it's uh so so special I mean I wish everybody at home could feel the atmosphere here at the moment you know it's just off the chart and could you feel the Tios carrying you there in the last couple of laps [Music] [Applause] so I'll just translate quickly that of course you say the T4 are just unbelievable and the power the power they give you you know is just so so special um you brought a lot of upgrades here to the car it seems to be working really so much better do you think you can keep challenging for WIS now even if we go to a different track like Baku next I don't know I don't know because uh I think uh our package was working pretty well on a track like Monza whether it will be the same for the rest of the of the season I doubt so I still think McLaren are the favorites but we have done a step forward that's for sure and uh Baku is a pretty nice track for me I quite like this track and I've been quite competitive in the past so who knows maybe we can achieve something special again there so I'm wishing you a spectacular party tonight and to all the Tios as well I hope you go crazy you all deserve it and see you all out next time in Baku wherever he goes tonight he's going to be followed on mass by the toosi and there they are good time to head for the airport Martin if we need to get out because I think everyone is gathered under the podium here in Monza currently third different Constructor to win in the last three races none of which are called Red Bull this this season has been ignited and well what a performance today that was and once again Paul said not winning the race in fact from ritters didn't win the race five years in the yeah five years in a row now that the PO sitter has not won at bza that is what it meant to shair as he crossed the line that's what it meant to those that work tirelessly to put his car together and to run it and that's what it meant to those that come here and invest their their passion in the sport of Formula One and their love the Ferrari and yeah they just adore don't they a formation finish like that and in the Constructors Championship then it's 39 points between Red Bull and Ferrari and it is now in between that McLaren just eight points behinds at Red Bull the dri Championship 62 points maxan has over Lando Norris who got the fastest lap of the race and we should also say congratulations because we didn't mention it at the time to George Russell seventh Sergio Perez who was 54 seconds off the lead and eight in the second Red Bull Alex Alor picks up his third Ninth Place finish of the season and Kevin Magnuson who hung on to 10th place and Franco kapino finishes his first race in 12th I was very I wasn't surprised he stayed out but I was surprised he survived cuz my front left was not looking very good I mean it was still going okay but we're going like what 81 slower I think yeah and then yeah was I thought I thought I will if I was locking up I was I was Destroy you yes is an easy race to that and Norris fairly quiet in the uh the cool down room as he reflects and looks at some of the replays I mentioned Kevin Magnuson survives to to hold on to 10th Place his first point at Monza for 10 years uh by the way but if uh if he gets any penalty points Magnuson could be on the fringes of missing a race very near that 12o limit he did well there because he he got it obviously they applied his 10c penalty and he ended at 0.1 ahead of Alonzo for that final world championship point he had a few Adventures Kevin mson but my goodness he was going for it wasn't he his fans had a few Adventures as well comes home to take a Podium third place for Lando Norris to be followed out by his teammates as for only the second time this season both McLaren finishing on the podium their run of Podium finishes extends now to 12 races charl Clair who said well you know I remember the first time I won here and I really enjoyed that and the second time feels just as special his second victory at Monza for Ferrari here he comes for his second victory of the Season Two couldn't happen to a nicer young man he is he's everything you [Applause] imagine e [Applause] e hear e we could talk tires we could talk about those that might have missed out but let's just say wow that was something special and that's something special as too as through the smoke Char Clair lifts the trophy high above his head they rolled a double six and it paid off beautifully he gets a medal as well from the the FIA quite the trophy as well that has been designed for this Italian Grand Prix quite the strategy they pulled off today team and Driver working very much in harmony Diego LNO their sporting director this will mean a lot to him as well Fred was uh tasting Victory as a Ferrari team principal once more I thoroughly enjoyed that race and do you know what you can't knock a Ferrari win in Italy can you no I enjoyed it I wondered if we might mid race it sort of a little bit calm wasn't it but then it just came alive Ferrari made it come alive at the beginning and then very much at the end Norris not looking overly pleased with how his day went started on pole finished on the podium but is that more points lost here in Monza today and the speediest of them all was the Prancing horse and shair who wins in Monza what a day for e for e e e e he e he
