Offense Grades | Texas vs Colorado St. | Quinn Ewers | Jaydon Blue | Matthew Golden | Texas Football

welcome to on Texas football I'm Bobby Burton your host joined by Jerry Hamilton it's time for offensive grades this morning Jerry uh we watched the Longhorns yesterday uh annihilate uh Colorado State pretty much wipe the floor with them 52 to nothing a big offensive showing 52 points a big one for the Longhorns game not really in doubt after the second quarter uh but you know we need to dish out some grades we're going to be hard in some areas and Easy in others and just talk about it from that perspective but uh anytime uh you put up 545 yards of offense score 52 points uh 26 first downs it's a pretty good overall performance for the long horns no it really is and I mean look it's uh uh put up more points on Colorado State than Washington state did last year under cam Ward Put up 50 and gave up 24 I think Colorado G had 40 three or 45 against them last year power five opponent so I know it's not always apples the apples comparisons but uh Texas did what they needed to do and they played after the first quarter played a really clean game offensively that's a good way to put it other than outside of the snap mishandled by Hayden Connor snapping it into to Juan Davis I thought they played excessively clean from the second quarter on no matter who the quarterback was Etc that's we'll come back to that and give them their overall offensive grade l later let's start with Quinn Urus though in the quarterback spot Jerry uh 20 of 27 260 yards three touchdowns one interception that was Ill advised uh but I tell you what the young man out of south lake had a really good first game I was talking to uh rod and Brian Rob Robinson in the postgame uh on Saturday afternoon Jerry I asked them what they saw differently in his third year I'm interested to see what you have to say about how you saw and what you saw differently from Quinn from one year one to now year three even what you saw different from last year yeah I thought there was a couple of times in the pocket where he moved his feet quicker and felt the pressure a little bit earlier and that's all you want to see from Quinn this year is feel that pressure earlier get those feet moving a little quicker move in the pocket a little better because once it gets the ball out of hand I mean he's tremendous right I mean colar state was playing 12 yards off in some instances they weren't going to let Texas go over the top on them they were going to play everything in front of them uh Quinn and playing everything in front of Texas is interesting because I think that's an interesting tactic to take because Quinn is so good in the in in the intermediate passing game it's almost like we're gonna play off we're scared of the Texas Speed but why didn't you try to force a right side throw down the field or a left side throw down the field not the Middle where your safeties are so it was was interesting the way tactically Colorado State worked against Texas but I thought Quinn the plays that run front of him he did very well in he had the one ill advised throw you don't want to see that one again this season that's a play where he just needs to take two yards get down and take take the points and move on uh but I I thought he he moved a little better in the pocket and that's kind of what we wanted to see from quen all also Arch Manning comes in and has a really nice day five of six the the only inom completion his last one had a really nice throw to jonte cook to set him up in the Red Zone then follows that up with a a nice shuffle pass out of a scramble drill almost to Silas Bolden young man from Oregon state gets his first touchdown as Longhorn and then he leads him on another scoring drive and the second time ends up with a one- yard scoring run you don't see that very often a Texas quarterback sneake we haven't seen that much with Quinn years but it was effective uh Arch I thought felt and looked like he was in command of the game when he was in there his only incompletion Parker Livingstone slipped on the route and hit the deck I mean so that was it that wasn't that was a probably a completion as well uh boy he looked good in the RPO game now I mean and obviously when you throw it the Ryan wingo and he gets going on the open field you're gonna look good after a completion uh but yeah I'll go ahead and throw my grade out overall both quarterbacks combined I'm going to go a minus a minus or a You could argue either way Quinn also had three passes dropped yes I mean and I know Isaiah bond that would have been a tough catch um Jaden blue the the one down the field maybe a tough catch but anytime receivers get both hands on the football that's a drop I don't care if you have to adjust the your body in the uh in the air to the football I mean that's those a lot of guys come down with that pass so um and the one the bomb was probably most difficult because it was in there was a really good throw between three Defenders by the way but it's one where if Bon has to leave his feet you're into danger zone I I'll give a minus but because the interception was probably an ill advv it was an ill-advised play um so I'm gonna go a minus which we got a great heart we're grading we're grading these guys on Quinn is a top 15 potential pick right Bobby no I think it's part of part of his expect I'm with you on AES and to your point I think it's part of it his expectation level 100% yeah I mean if if we were talking about Quinn ERS two years ago we probably be saying a to A+ on this game A+ yeah exactly and so but overall Texas quarterbacks 25 of 33 for 355 yards four touchdowns one interception 14 yards per completion is healthy especially when teams are playing you deep uh 7.4 yards per play overall for the offense uh let's go to running backs we said a minus quarterbacks running backs again expectation level plays into this I went with a B+ same thing I did because the Dr I'll tell you why Jade blue and Trey Weiser do look the part they they they're gonna play that piece of this jerck Gibson is that guy as far as moving the chains though yeah blue and Weisner uh I even think Weisner came in on short yardage which was very surprising to me personally that means they they think a lot of his ball protection uh skills Jerry and then J jerck Gibson comes along uh that all in total I think J Gibson 10 for 67 Blue 11 for 57 Weisner five of 22 one of the reasons why I kind of dinged him a little bit those two drops you mentioned by Jaden blue out of the back field but still productive 37 yards receivings we had 94 uh total offense of yards it was a good one I don't know that it was an A or even an A minus though overall again expectation levels maybe a little higher what what what are your thoughts on how the the Running Backs play I'm going B+ with an excited about this season though I wan I want to say this I W to preface that by saying I'm very excited about what I saw as the season moves along Jared Gibson gonna be really good he is built for the SEC running the football and between the tackles he's a tremendous scheme fit the way Sark wants to run the ball when he's continues to pick up Blitz pickup continues to do all the other little things um but he can help this team running the football as the season moves along and I and I'll throw another one out there he doesn't even know much of the Playbook yet Velton Gardner is gonna and that's gonna end up being a key late edition because he also I do believe will be able to help this team as the season moves along carries off of blue he's very similar to Jaden blue as running so just to take some carries off of Jaden blue at times yet still give them that speed to the outside that's what I thought Gardner had he's not very good up the middle I didn't think in the one carry we saw him try to do that or two carries but the outside different dude now and look there were no ball protection issues no no no catastrophic plays but that was Jarrett Gibson's first game that's Trey weiser's first real action at running back in a meaningful game early in the game belon Garner bar barely knows The Playbook I really like where these guys can go as the season moves along and they get experience that's my big takeaway is we know what Jaden blue is now you've seen a little bit more what Trey Weisner could be and then you see what Jarrett Gibson can be and as these guys continue to grow I I think Texas has a has a pretty solid room there no turnovers of that group which was something we were looking for after that Washington performance where not only did Cedric Baxter fumble but also Jaden blue all right before we go to the wide receiver room I want to say thank you to our newest sponsor get in the game football season is here Underdog fantasy is the best where where is Sark GNA find the ball for all of these different guys how's he going to get everybody involved and I'm looking at the list right now five catches isaah Bond four for Ryan Wingo three jonte cook three uh um Matthew Golden One Silas Balden he kind of got it he kind of spread it around he did more than maybe I expected on Saturday uh Bond the leading receiver with h five catches one touchdown golden had two nice catches in the uh Red Zone for touchdowns and then Wingo LED all receivers in receiving yardage with 70 yards uh that one in the fourth quarter fantastic like Roy Williams Roy Williams or whoever you want to say I I told you man that that guy is just a a really good player Jerry and then jontan cook I thought had a solid day as well yeah yeah I look I was I walked away really excited about the receivers really excited because again it's like running backs but a little different because guys have more experience but jonte cook is the only wide receiver that even re had caught a pass as a receiver at Texas I don't think DeAndre Moore caught one last year unless I'm mistaken he's the only guy of those six that caught a had caught a pass as a Texas Longhorn had played in the offense really in games and it wasn't much this was a green green Green unit in SAR scheme where are they going to be by midseason that was my takeaway Bobby how good is this group going to be even before midseason by the Mississippi State game when SEC play starts if I if I was teams on the schedule I'd be looking at that saying O sark's got some real dudes like Silas Balon he hadn't even you know he didn't want in the action as much as I thought he was and you know he's gonna be as the season moves along Wingo will just keep pushing Isaiah Bond will get more comfortable I mean this this Seer core has got a chance toh rock and roll this season man they can hurt you from just about everywhere that that's the the reality of it that and the numbers prove it I will say this I'd add this to you Jerry and and say this as it relates to what we're talking about here uh no drops uh on Saturday well oh yeah Bond Bond had that one that was a tough catch uh but I would add this part maybe I should grade Quinn ERS higher than what we gave him because he developed enough of a rapport with those guys I G I gave the wide receivers an A minus I I think that's I could have easily given him an a uh but they didn't make the big big play but they made the routine play which I think is huge for Texas I think the other thing the other to do there the other thing to me is um there were no blown routes where Quinn actually delivered the ball where it turned out to be an interception because the guy ran ran the wrong way cut the route off right uh didn't read the play right and Quinn was thinking one thing and the receiver was thinking the other and ends up being an easy interception so that's a pretty good showing by quarterback qb1 and a wide receiver core first game playing together truly uh tight end let's talk about those guys uh four catches between them two for gunner Helm uh 42 yards on that one for Amari nblack one for Juan Davis Juan Davis on Saturday was involved in the game plan from the start we had talked about that and a lot of people said he maybe not well definitely involved from the get-go NL was less involved than maybe we anticipated perhaps he has a a coming out party against Michigan or later this year I tell you what gun hel looked pretty good to me Jerry on that one reception with some Nifty feet in the open field eluded a tackler uh and kept on running he looked pretty darn good the tight ends as a whole I think they've got some functional pieces to the puzzle more than maybe most people would uh say I do worry still a little bit about inline blocking and how that plays a role in the Texas Run game because I did not see a dominant Run game even with five returning offensive line starters or for returning offens starters we we'll really be able to grade the tight ends in the Run game next week because Michigan's Josiah Stewart's a bad mofo coming off the edge and Michigan's got a couple of them right so we're going to get a true grade on them in the Run game where they're at next week but again I look at tight end like I'm a broken record like running back and like wide receiver Amari nlock hadn't even really become a fixture yet and you know he will be more as the season moves along Juan Davis first true meaningful game action so look that's what makes Texas a really really dangerous football team is last year going into the Alabama game and going into the season Sanders third year in in the system Whittington worthy and then Mitchell comes in from a national with two national championship rings that was a super experienced offensive skill group this year in Sark system it's not except for gunner Helm let's see how much this group improves again I'm going a for tight ends I thought they did their job well obviously from a blocking standpoint we're going to grade them against Michigan more so but I just love where this offense is going to go because they had 52 points they put up 546 yards and they are even close to where they're going to be in by week five and six and Beyond I went with a B+ for the tight ends uh because of the Run game I do think they have to be more successful and help more in that so I on the perimeter block gunel made good PLS on the perimeter but the your point inside the tackle boxes yeah tough tough fling in there and Texas should have been able to move the ball a little bit better against uh against them on Saturday all right offensive line uh this is a one that I think we could sit here and uh nitpick to death and the reason I say that is the false starts by Jake Majors I think it was and maybe one by Hayden Connor or the the flub snap from Hayden Connor when he went in for Jake Majors uh DJ cell uh didn't look all that great Cole Hudson came in at start and played it both right guard and left guard uh during early in the game uh cam Williams I thought looked terrific Jerry his first full game action other than Kansas State a year ago and Kelvin Banks looked like Kelvin Banks but still the Longhorns gave up one sack other than that they kept the pocket pretty clean overall uh what would you give them as a grade uh for their performance on Saturday first team offensive line game in balance or into they started really substituting beyond the first six I'll go B I'll go b i I think look Colorado state does not have a good defensive front if we R start ranking the defensive front on the Texas schedule they may be 10th or 11th so they did not go up against the defensive fronts they're going to see the rest of the season save U Monroe so to not be able to get the push early in the Run game I is is that potentially going to be an issue down the line we'll see um they haven't been tested from a pass rush standpoint that's coming next week when that zero Josiah Stewart's blazing off the edge uh so they haven't really been tested by Colorado State so because of the pre- snaps couple of blown assignments early Quin had too much pressure on him against Colorado State early in the game I'm going to go with a solid B uh but I think as a whole I really like that from Brandon Baker he's got a bright future when he came into the game um I I I think Cole Hudson healthy is a big difference for Texas um so I I I'm looking at it from earlier in the game versus the entire game the first six guys first two quarters of the game I'm going to go solid B I move it to B+ with the whole sum of the parts for the entire game yeah they had had some young guys get their first extensive action Trevor guby you mentioned Brandon Baker was in there NATO was in there quite a bit as well Conor Robertson played a lot at Center in the fourth quarter as well I you know what because of the expectations being so high I gave the unit a b yeah because I don't think they really moved Colorado State off the ball very often no Sark did it a little bit with smoke and mirrors I thought uh in the in the Run game he was successful but that's where I went with with a B hey by the way Bobby can I add something yeah I know Jake major had the pre- snap penalty but I want to give him an A plus for effort whenever Center's pulling and his ass to try to block in space on a second level a plus for effort for Jake Majors today yeah that mean that me he he may he played perfect he had the pre- snap penalty but man whenever you're asking a center to pull and he's having to make key blocks yeah that's that takes a hell of an effort all right uh let's talk about uh let's grade the offense overall uh we had a lot of discussion this offseason Jerry about one big thing scoring better in the Red Zone what if I told you on Saturday that the Longhorns were seven of seven on touchdowns in the Red Zone that's the start Texas wanted on offense overall they gained 545 yards I mentioned that earlier 26 first downs they got what 12 different players the football at one point or another in football game uh maybe 13 holy cow my my thinking here is about the only thing I wish I could have seen a little bit better is third down performance they were six of 12 on Saturday but I mean that is nitpicking when you talk about overall performance you put 52 points up on the board Jerry um in Colorado State you can say what you want they may have given up a bunch to some other teams Texas did what they were supposed to do on offense no they weren't per perfect run in the football maybe that's the one Bugaboo but other than that Quinn looked relatively sharp Arch looked sharp uh the running game did get going on outside runs and those receivers were turning guys around and and when I say receivers I'm not just talking about wide receivers Jaden blue Trey Weiser they turned some guys too uh and had what four catches between them as well I thought all overall the offense deserves an a this is where where a situation where I think the sum of the parts uh actually exceeded the individual effort and maybe that's a little bit of what Sark was talking about you know in the preseason where hey we got to get to a point where we're holding each other to a standard and everybody is dragging everybody else along personally I I went with an a overall I I just thought that the offense itself uh you know when you only punt once that's I don't care if you're playing little sister the poor that's pretty good yeah so I'm G to go a minus because I'm gonna go off what the SAR grading scale may be but I see if we were doing this for Oregon right now they'd be getting the C minus to S so Texas played really well but we're we're looking at a standard here of where Texas football program is and where they want to be that's the key so look they had the pre- snaps early um they didn't create maybe the Run Lanes early had too many blown assignments um had a couple of Jaden blue had a couple of drops Isaiah Bond the ball you know you'd like to see him come down with right so you I can't give them a perfect grade I can't even go A+ but I will say this I'm not being too hard on Texas I do think they're going to get A+ grades on offense this season because I think that's where this offense is going to go uh but it's a but it's a young offense in the skill position and and at running back and with NL at tight end because they just haven't played in this scheme so maybe I'm being a little hard on them but like I said I'm going a minus um but Oregon would be getting a d right now to be clear yeah I get I keep going down the more I think about Oregon right now well so be it uh who who you know couldn't happen to a better guy in Dan Lany all right uh hey look I I look at it right now Jerry Longhorn score 52 points I went with an a overall I just think that that Texas had a whale of a day overall it was a great start to the 2024 season for the offense they got so many receivers the ball that they proved that they should get some buy in for those guys to keep improving the rest of the year that is so key to me both on from jerck Gibson at running back uh to jonte cook and Matthew golden at receiver they got guys the football and things happened uh good things happened for Texas on Saturday all right that's going to do it uh for this grades offensive grades we'll come back a little bit later today Jerry and I will and do the defensive grades as well uh thank you so much also to our sponsor uh Underdog fantasy if you get a chance make sure you check out Underdog fantasy all you have to do is download the app use promo code on Texas uh for a first deposit offer of up to $1,000 for seven in the Red Zone like I talked about big change from a year ago now what are they going to do next week against a much much better Michigan defense for Jerry I'm Bobby y'all have a good one hook them
