Rapid Reactions | Texas bullies Michigan | Steve Sarkisian Coaching Clinic | Quinn Ewers | SEC

welcome to on Texas football it's Sunday morning it's time for a little rapid reactions action uh from our friend Adam Loy is the sponsor over at Loy law firm uh Jerry Hamilton CJ Vogal myself Bobby burton all joining together here basking in the glow of a longhorn Victory on a Sunday morning uh before anybody gets going uh guys I tell you what uh the Longhorns played a whale of a game yesterday uh no no doubt about it and we got several different pieces that we want to get to from a rapid reaction standpoint uh I want to get y'all's first comment about the game uh yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon yeah I think my my main takeaway was look you knew what Michigan's strengths were you knew what they had to do offensively that they were G to have success and you knew what Texas needed to do they need to win the battle on the perimeter they need to win uh with their speed uh because teams are certainly respecting we've seen now Michigan do that as well expecting the speed of Texas on the perimeter uh but I think the biggest take away from this game for me was Quinn obviously that was I know he's had better statistical games that he's played at Texas I thought that was the smartest most intelligent quarterback game he's played at Texas so I want to get that out of the way and we'll talk about that but it was the offensive line winning up front in the Run game starting Midway through the first quarter against Michigan that was the thing that I'm taking from this game that travels throughout the SEC because we've talked all year uh all summer which was a long summer where is Texas gonna have to where are they going to be tested early against Michigan what is that going to show you for the SEC when Georgia and Kentucky who wants to run the football I'm not saying they have the Personnel at Michigan does but some teams are going to want to run the football and you the physicality of the league well Michigan has a top one two or three defensive front Texas will see all season and Texas certainly passed that test and then some and when you see an offensive lineman like cam Williams his first start on the road he had the Jitters uh but watch him come back from that and show the adversity the intestinal fortitude uh the right side of the Texas offensive line are tremendous in the Run game guys tremendous I got to say this uh a couple things that that you comment before pitching over to C J who was in The Press Box for us yesterday um The Run game it was functional at the very least it was not to your point it wasn't they weren't like wiping out huge holes yes Trey Weiser had a nice run and Jared Gibson but it was functional it was that it was that run efficiency that Brian Irwin talked about Jerry that you're latching on to and I could not agree more uh that that's we'll talk about the running backs in a little bit because CJ wanted to brief on that the other thing I'll tell you about Quinn ers this is the kind of game where he ends up in New York for the Heisman for I'm not saying he'll win it this isn't necessarily the game that'll win it but this puts him seriously in the convers I guarantee the people in Vegas uh later this afternoon when they redo those odds Quinn's odds go straight through the roof CJ what were your first takeaways from uh from the game yesterday yeah and it's kind of been a continuation from a year ago right I mean I I don't think there's an environment or situation to too big for this Texas team you know you go into Tusa last year you win that game you win the Big 12 Championship you go on the road again this year you play in N Arbor and you come away with a I don't want to call it easy but I mean they sure made it look easy right I mean it it was a almost a a smooth sailing second half it was hey it was decisive it was it abolutely the game was not in doubt Midway through the third quarter it was decisive it it was it was rather remarkable I mean we could talk about you know that defense for Texas right now one touchdown through two games I they looked incredible yesterday uh three turnovers another turnover on Downs really four takeaways from the Michigan side uh Michigan offense I mean that's going to travel and when you go on the road into the SEC and maybe it's not just this year but moving forward because you talk about how that culture and that mindset trickles down into the youngsters that means a lot for Texas going into the SEC when that conference play starts up more importantly maybe than anything else Bobby and Jerry but that that mentality is going to mean a whole lot whenever they go into college station at the end of the year I can tell you that right now all right let's get into some P particulars but before I say that you guys both said something similar that will travel that means we think Texas is gonna have pretty good season I think that the big the big preseason game kind of out of the way now get your C legs right get ready for conference play uh I think those are those are big things all right let's start with this we got a couple different things we want to talk about uh another rapid reaction that we had was sar's game plan because I thought it was terrific before we go there I want to say thank you to our sponsor our sponsor is Adam Loy of the Loy Law Firm Adam and his group have been helping injured Texans for more than two decades now uh Adam and his group uh basically help you if you've been injured a car wreck a truck wreck automobile accident of any type visit L lawfirm.com again 20 plus years of experience they give you a free consultation no strings attached if you've been injured in a car wreck all right guys sar's game plan who wants to talk about this masterpiece first it was tremendous yesterday tremendous did kept the Michigan defensive line at Bay got M got Jaden blue in Space the use of Gunner Helm give me a break I mean and and they exe to to the team's benefit they executed but I mean Steve sarkeesian versus Chiron Moore did not look Fair on Saturday in my no no the the uh you know SARS he's showing he starts a lot with the horizontal passing game right he's working the perimeter he wants linebackers to Chase he wants defensive lineman to turn down the line of scrimmage and have to play with uh motor and Chase ability right and get those guys moving but you don't run straight at them necessarily you make them turn and Chase get off a block because what do what do all these defensive coaches preach gang tackle run to the football gang tackle run to the football these guys have been doing it since they were 10 years old so it's not like they throw a perimeter pass and a defensive lineman's just going to stop and take a knee right they're going to turn any movement they make is movement that you want early in the game and I think Sark is doing a great job of setting up the Run game and the mid in the intermediate passing game through the horizontal passing game to start I thought that was great I thought I thought sark's bet is crazy as it sounds I thought his best play call was the Red Zone at the end of the half he moved the pocket where he moved the pocket he he did he there was not going to be a sack and a seven yard loss on that play there wasn't GNA be some strip sack and you fumble the football Quinn wasn't gonna have to pick three different guys which guy do you throw it to this was a play call that was perfect at the situation because at worse you got to feel goal at best you got a touchdown and the only guy that was going to catch the football in that play was Matthew golden and and that I thought that was sark's best play Call of the day and I think that that is showing again some differences we're going to see with Texas Red Zone success this year CJ I I tell you what he he mentioned that Sark was masterful in the I mean just masterful in the first half but Jerry brought up the Red Zone yeah on on Saturday Texas finished three of four in touchdowns in the Red Zone uh kicking only one field goal on a Red Zone what what did you see from sar's game plan that you liked in particular well I saw a lot of execution I thought right you know and you can kind of pin that back to hey Jen Blue Goes Down And what did Texas do on that next Drive well they ran the ball six times for 40 yards and a touchdown because they trusted that offensive line and I thought even more so towards the red zone that offensive line gave you some pretty good push you know jerck Gibson found some success Quinn his ability to create you know he had the the long touchdown on the run to Matthew golden that was called back but then you saw it again later on almost a very similar play to Gunner Helm and you're sitting there thinking hold on that looked pretty similar and it's again not a play in which we've seen Quinn ERS make on the run like that all that much but it was a very impressive throw and 100% a very impressive play as well all right we had to cut away for a second there had to reass re reposition himself where he staying they're just getting up and going here CJ I want to mention this and ask you your thoughts on uh and about uh Quinn ERS in his performance because we talked about him stepping up in that pocket to those two throws one to Moore and the other to to Gunner Helm but he just looked more in command uh on Saturday than any uh time I remember other than maybe last year late in the year or Andor against Alabama very similar performance eerily similar almost to that Alabama performance but he didn't have the Deep balls on Saturday you see that at times with quarterbacks when the game feels like it starts to slow down Bobby it looked like that game was very slow for Quinn and again you look back at you know that first half for the Longhorns what did you have you had Quin in the offense moving down the field and they did it every single drive in that first half field goal attempt touchdown touchdown field goal touchdown I would take that in the first half against a team that wants to control the time of possession all the time Quinn was in command he was accurate and sarkeesian pointed out very well uh in his postgame presser he said you know that there wasn't a time in which I thought Quinn put the ball in danger and that against a team like Michigan it's so important and for a veteran quarterback to have a game like that so important for Texas on the road in those big games the other thing to me and we've talked about this last year Quinn needed to put on the cape Rod babers talks about it all the time time and you know he has a point you know there were six games a year ago in which Quinn ERS only had one passing touchdown he was a big part of the offense and the the scoring obviously but you wanted him to take over football games that first half it was all Quinn ERS and I thought 100% at some point in that first half I'm looking around saying there's not a player on this field at the same level of Quinn that I'm watching right now it was really really import impressive uh Jerry what did you think about Quinn's maturation uh Euro over year yeah so I think the big thing for me was you know this wasn't the big statistical game but it was a great timing game uh for him and and to your point Bobby this can get you to New York because the statistical Games should come on the schedule this was a big game from a standpoint of showing you've taken the next step not turning it over on the road in a really big game being in command of a team that is now going to be ranked out of know three in the country right there's still three top three in the country for a while hopefully right and have his chance at two depending on how all these games go um in the future but I mean and we step and we go a little farther than the Heisman talk this was a strong NFL draft game for Quinn because the throws he made to Gunner Helm I mean how many how many deep shots are there really in the NFL how many I mean there's you know versus how many intermediate iate throws when you have to throw off platform when you have to move a little bit in the pocket to release the ball when you have to find uh that tied end uh on a cross find the matchup I thought he played with great control you know what two of the biggest plays Quinn made maybe were when he took a knee when the running back went the wrong direction he didn't try to do too much he didn't put the ball and the possession in Jeopardy that's growth because just remember last week a ball that was intercepted for him he should have just got down got two yards and taken the field goal and if a guy with his talent makes the correct play you end up in New York and you end up in the first round of the draft couldn't have said it better yeah I Jerry you're so right on uh with those comments all right circling back to what happened on Saturday okay I I've said that the sar's game plan was masterful I'm wrapping that part up right now because Quinn and the players to to CJ's Point did execute it well these halftime stats are just eye opening 15 first downs for Texas four to to to migan 15 to four third down conversions eight of 10 for Texas one of five for Michigan that's in the first half total yards 279 to Texas 88 for Michigan um th this is the one that even shocks me even more time of possession for a team that Michigan on Saturday that literally guys did not snap the ball before five seconds left on the clock I don't think all day time of possession for Texas in the first half 1906 to 1054 Texas ran 45 plays in the first half to 21 for Michigan that's so Bobby what you're saying is with the total opposite way of what Michigan wanted 100% and the other thing I would add to it Jerry that that's important is I think it's and why I brought it up I think Stark's game plan played into it he knew what they wanted to do took the ball out of the hands took the ball first as well that's some mentality piece there that we talked about all right uh Hey CJ one of the things we talked pre pre uh doing this show you want to talk about the running backs and what they brought to the table because I think that you know Quinn the receivers all those guys are all going to get their flowers so so are the uh offensive line but you thought the running backs played a key note in this win yeah it did and it started from the get-go you know we saw a lot of two back Pony package on the field in the first drive and I I was maybe a little surprised by that I don't know if I was expecting start to go to that well that quickly with the running backs but more so than you know Jaden blue and his impact I know statistically it might have been a quieter game but for Texas again for Trey Weisner to come in and to have the impact that he did after blue went down with the tweet and then Jerick Gibson to have his impact near the goal line I don't know what more you could have asked for for the both of them right you know and they combined for 18 18 total carries uh combined you know the three of them uh the three running backs nine carries 10 carries eight carries I mean very very balanced approach by this Texas running back group uh jarro Gibson very hard Runner I I continue to be impressed by the way in which he runs with his Pad level and his patience yet he he gets the ball and in of just going straight for the hole hey he lets it kind of fizzle out in front of him and he finds that cut Trey Wiis I thought made some NFL level runs there were times where his cuts and his his vision man it was impressive from that kind of aerial view in which I had up in the box man I I was so impressed by him specifically on that drive right after Jaden blue went down that was a a full-fledged approach by that running back room and Choice can't say it enough but his impact with this team has been I mean ins it's it's tremendous Jerry what' you think I I felt like J Jared Gibson added a punch in the uh uh in the Red Zone I also felt like Sark on that one play call he just I know that that the Texas players have to execute but I kind of give that to to Sark and his game plan yeah look and I would say this the 28 Touches for 143 yards yesterday against Michigan is a huge win for Steve sarkeesian and this offensive line in this Texas football team because if you can do that against Michigan save Georgia you can do that plus against anybody else you play and that's another big takeaway but look Jarrett Gibson Jared Gibson's gonna be he's got to be loving this by the way he came in when this offensive Line's three years into it and they're all grown up F so great timing for Jarrett Gibson way to stay in high school but look the other thing I would say is he's going to get better and better as the season moves along and as Texas gains more trust in him in pass Pro and all the little things at the running back position then watch out because I think we'll see more of Jarrett Gibson running the ball downhill but yet here's the thing they still don't have the same downhill running back they had prior to the season with CED Ben uh baxer going down as the season moves along jerck Gibson's going to give them even more than he is right now and that's a really good compliment again Texas could work back it's going to take him longer to that Trio of running backs where you have that really good scheme fit between the tackles Runner you have a slasher and Weisner and you have the guy in blue you can move all over the field so that's falling into place for Steve sarkeesian and that's why recruiting multiple running backs to this scheme and this run game scheme are so key uh for Sark moving forward and it's also why he says he never likes to recruit two of the same running back in the same class by the way two types yeah great great point Jerry and CJ I want to say one other thing uh here as as it relates to those running backs I I felt they ran hard they weren't perfect but they they played hard all right uh we got last thing I want to mention and we haven't even mentioned in Rapid reactions here the defense what a game uh what a great game plan from Pete uh Pete Kowski and Johnny nanson and then those turnovers from the secondary they were just on it from the get-go guys what Derek Williams interception Andrew makuba interception Jade Baron fumble recovery what what do you what else do you guys want they several different contested passes I mean look they they look it's daylight and dark from a year ago now Michigan is not a great passing team so don't nobody's going to say that but the secondary I thought looked terrific yeah it the safety position is very improved and we talked about this before the season drik Williams in year two those guys make big jumps and and he's making a big jump right now um he's gonna grow in confidence from this game Michael Taff returns Andrew makuba massive offseason uh addition out of the portal but because look he may not test as well in a combine saying is Keaton Crawford but he plays the safety position in a more athletic manner with better timing Texas got so much more athletic and I want to say this and I talk I mentioned this to Rod yesterday on The Telecast um I watch with us galani McDonald looks like he's improving at a pretty good clip right now guys he he was out there in key situations Texas even lined him up at nickel and I'm like whoa if they're expanding his role you only do that if this guy's getting it up here to go with all the athletic y yeah I mean so that safety position is just going to keep getting better and we can say that about a lot I'll tell you again CJ CJ's guy to watch on defense before the game was Baron cell and while Baron cell won't blow you away in if you look at the tackles and sacks and tackles for loss in this game he had three quarterback hurries in this game he was credited with and he continues to be maybe the most consistent Texas player on the roster he always shows up and plays really well without stuffing a box score and that'll probably put him on an NFL roster for a while I couldn't agree more there I just one more thing on the secondary I know this is looking ahead but real quick if you look at that Texas schedule I know they open up in Mississippi State right right after you got Oklahoma I think that's where you'll really start to see that secondary tested with the vertical passing ability by both of those schools and to have them back to back that is huge for this secondary to have two straight weeks of basic basically a similar style offense to game plan against also one last thing on the secondary in these two weeks that we've seen in the seasons thus far I I don't have the numbers in front of me and I'm sure this isn't right but it feels like there's just been so many more aggressive plays on the ball with the ball in the air than what we saw the entire entirety of 2023 it's been a a revelation almost CJ Bobby to CJ's Point real quick here's a play that is big in in that Trey Moore drops in the coverage I believe it was in the third quarter he reroutes coulston Loveland right into Andrew makuba and makuba makes a nice solid hit for a pbu those are the play smarter football players guys that is two really experienced smart football players combining treymore drops does his job turns C reroutes lovelin to the inside makuba being a veteran player sees that he's in the right spot dislodges the football you're seeing more plays like that from the Texas defense people talk about the J Baron interception and they talk about the turnovers you get but watch those plays that dislodge from the football the CJ's point Y another thing that I would add I I think that is important as it relates to that secondary yards after catch and number of I mean did you did you see a missed tackle today very early I did yall see a missed tackle at all on on Saturday I mean my very early Bobby it was in that first round go for an ankle but yes that was it I mean if you didn't that they are tackling better Jerry and and CJ I really believe that and that too is g to pay dividends because you and this is one of the things that PK talked about in the off season he wanted to limit yards after catch because they got burned a year ago with it in several big games and so I look I I look at it they're more athletic on the back end uh I think they're faster on the back end and to y'all's point they're making more plays on the ball I mean to to I I agree with CJ We're Not Gonna know probably until late September early October whether it Mississippi State and Oklahoma and what they against Texas throwing the ball but what we will what we do know already I think this secondary is light years ahead of where they were a year ago that's but yeah I want I want to say something too I want to throw the question to y'all to end to end with I think Bobby is the speed of this Texas team we talked all off season um I I can't remember when I started in on this but we got going with it this was going to be the fastest team sarks had and people are like whoa worthy and Mitchell I'm not talking about one one player or two players I'm I'm talking about one through 85 as a roster that is clear the first two weeks this is the fastest team SARS had at Texas and maybe the fastest team since' 05 in Austin and and it's it's ball get off of a Colin Simmons you're starting to see that come through it's an Andrew makuba not we're not talking about combine testing we're talking about playing fast there's different ways to have teams feed and Texas is showing all of it but I'm here to tell tell you guys this Texas starts DeAndre Moore and Matthew golden along with Isaiah Bond and Jaden blue if 10.80 is your fastest slowest guy in the 100 meters of that group people have to respect your speed and if they respect your speed what happened today with Gunner Helm what's gonna happen later in the season is s gets NL mixed into this with Gunner Helm Texas is and Ryan Wingo starts mixing on outside and Silas starts mixing in more outside what we've seen from Texas has been really impressive so far I don't even think they're close to maximizing what they can do offensively Midway through the year and the rest of the way Gunner Helms faster than JT Sanders yeah uh just putting that out there uh we'll see what all this means but uh hey look guys uh before we get going with rapid rackers I want to mention another thing uh Texas got a little lucky yesterday in my opinion okay and not in the way not in the football game a little lucky because of what happened to Notre Dame yesterday afternoon yeah uh Notre Dame losing to Northern Illinois in my opinion is a big boom to the Texas Longhorns not because it looks bad on the agies I'm not not talking the recruiting angle of that because that does look bad I'm actually talking about the fact that now Steve sarkeesian says remember did you see what happened over in South Ben on on last Saturday he has a talking point as Texas heads and plays UTSA schedule for next Saturday well and and Bobby what that also did that knocked an independent out of the college football playoff there's another spot for a nine and three team now Notre Dame's toast I don't care if they win out they won't get in the playoff off of this loss that opens it up for another in uh somebody else from the SEC or Big 10 with three losses is what it's going to end up doing man that has to false hope are that any any kind of hope that A&M had that they actually played a good team just gave them false hope uh as well all right that'll do it for Rapid reactions I want to say thank you to our sponsor Adam Loy of the Loy Law Firm he's been helping injured Texans for 20 plus year he and his firm again injured in a car wreck truck wreck automobile accident ATV anything and think you might be due compensation give Adam
