Brandon Lee Gowton REACTS to Eagles' Devin White Being OUT for Opener & Previewing Packers Game

welcome back in everybody to birds 365 a Wednesday Edition breaking news just came down Devin white is out for the Friday night game at vers the Packers in South Pao Brazil joined Now by Brandon Lee gon of bleeding green Nation blg welcome to the show man how you doing on this Wednesday excited for Friday can't wait week one finally here first of all apologies from me plg that is a terrible I'm going to blame it on fat fingers normally you're on at 92 I I must have hit uh so I apologize uh off the bat I thank you for being um for being the great human being you are willing to move back an hour Al also while we're doing this in the break Patrick ceran fouryear 96 million extension 77 a half million of that guaranteed uh resetting the cornerback Market that's a player the Eagles had a lot of interest in uh back in the day um and I guess uh we'll start with Dean white a on your I want you to put your uh uh tin wall hat on on your conspiracy theory I think we've all kind of seen nicoe Dean over the past two three weeks the last two three weeks of training camp look to me tell me if from you think differently look to me like the best linebacker on this team um it's just a way to save base and get them on the field or is Devon white really hurt uh uh blg conspiracy theory time well even with you know Isaiah Rogers too it's kind of funny it's like you have these like kind of placeholder sort of vets um and Isaiah Rogers looks like you know he's limited he might still play but it's kind of funny to me that like both Devon white and Isaiah Rogers show up in the injury report when presumably there's like potentially you know younger players behind them who could be more long-term pieces um um and uh that I would think the front office might want to see potentially more than the coaching staff necessarily so yeah that's interesting um I believe I saw a tweet here from Jeff mccan as we're just kind of you know going live here that noobe Dean was slated to be the starting linebacker uh even before this uh at Mike before this Devon White injury and certainly the Eagles own team issued depth chart still has the you know Devon White whereas you know Zack bond is just by himself by contrast so I thought that was interesting but yeah I mean I think I think noobe had the highest highs uh of any Eagles linebacker in Trend Camp he also had some low lows especially more so earlier in Camp and Vic fangio even really admitted that but yeah I'm intrigued to see what noobi can do on Friday night yeah I'm glad Jeff tweeted that because um yeah I think it was becoming clear as we got down um now I didn't expect this and I did see Devon in the locker room yesterday was you know seemed to be moving around fine was um Eagles had a bunch of takeout food they were getting he was interested in that more than anything else but he didn't seem like a guy who was going to be ruled out today um yeah I think this has a lot to do with Jeremiah troter Jr as well you know because I was starting to think and I do think Cooper Dee will be a inactive I I I was starting to think Trotter would be inactive as well because if you think about building that game day roster blg now you have Ben banser great special teams player and Orin Burks you're able to get him back on the roster great special teams player whereas troter is probably not going to help you but now Trotter's your your mean backup so I think it has something to do with him as well get both of those guys sort of in the mix ncoe and shrer yeah and then just some more follow up here we have Albert Breer saying that there were murmur that the Eagles could trade Devon white before the cut Eagles cut down from 90 to 5 I'm going be spiking the football on this one oh my I'm gonna present you with a bouquet of flowers a steak dinner all on the viewers because they've been crushing Johnny Mack all off season on the Devin white stuff oh he got Ben last year you know he barely played and John is just given you know the truth and people don't want to hear that people want to hear that he's going to change the linebackers for the Eagles and uh it doesn't look like that's going to happen but we'll see I I'd still think you know assuming he does get healthy here and he's not you know dealing with his injury uh for a long time I think you know he's still gonna I think Devon White's gonna play at some point I don't think it's going to be as simple as only noobe Dean and Zack Bond playing 100% of the snaps the entire game and I do think Devon white has probably the most you know pure like athleticism the the most explosive ability of any Eagles linebacker yeah if it were the El piic you know the to cathlon I'd be all Devon whites all the time uh tremendous athlete um but I do think and and by the way and I've said it I before you came on be I mean now nco's got to perform it's not like it ends but if he does perform he's going to be the starting Mike linebacker and I think it's but it's a very difficult test I think if you're looking at it from Matt laflor perspective and your game planning against that Eagles defense I'm trying to attack the middle of the field with Kobe Dean and Zach Bon and pan Mitchell playing the slot I mean if I were Matt laflor is that where you would go blg yeah uh absolutely what's it um Luke Musgrave a big mus crave game maybe uh yeah for as good as Noob Dean did look at times especially later in Camp again like I said the struggles were when he was dropping back into coverage when you get ncoe Dean flying downhill as a Blitzer and run defense even in coverage when he's kind of reading and reacting to what's in front of him we saw good things there but when you're asking him to drop back and uh make plays you know in coverage like that that is that is that part remains to be seen and you know let's go back to what Vic fio said even earlier this week where he said ideally you know you want to settle on two linebackers there but he also acknowledged like this isn't or at least admitted like this is an ongoing battle still yeah and I remember way back he was talking about uh different position he was talking about cornerbacks at the time but B made that comment you might have remembered uh blg um it will become obvious at some point and it it became obvious with quinan Mitchell it did not become obvious at linebacker because they kept rolling out Devin white and Zack B and I kept saying to myself well it's pretty obvious to me that ncoe Dean's the best linebacker and um I I even said to Xander I said I'd be disappointed if Vic vano didn't see what I saw to be honest um but he did so I'm thrilled uh that Vic uh has gone in that direction thank you uh big banio uh but uh breaking news on that standpoint we'll we'll be interesting to see um how things shake out because Devon white is still a part of this team there's no guarantee that nicoe de is going to stay healthy number one and then play consistently so you're probably going to see Devin uh White at some point this season uh or maybe even Jeremiah trudder Jr but I mentioned Cooper Dee as well uh at practice on I hate these weeks because I I don't even know what day it is uh Brandon so at practice on Monday mhh um all of a sudden Jan Dotson was the second team punt returner and I said to myself that that is not a good sign because Cooper Dee since he got healthy had been taking on that role you need a backup Britain Cubby's going to be the punt returner it's got nothing to do with the actual punt returning but it gave me an indication that maybe Cooper de is not going to be active for this game and that's why they're giving dots in those reps um in case something goes wrong with Britain cubby again tin foil am I going too far with that no I mean I think that's possible I mean you looked at Vic fangio's comments about Cooper earlier this week and he not so many words said that he he doesn't think he's really ready and I that makes sense he missed a ton of time in training camp he only played in that preseason finale thought he he kind of up and down in that game did some nice things um as you know run Defender tackling that in coverage you know looked a little bit uh not up fully up to speed yet which again to be expected maybe for a guy who missed a lot of time in training camp and that was his first ever NFL preseason uh action so yeah I thought that was interesting and also you know eag was added another punt returner kind of guy to their practice squad on Tuesday with Kyle Phillips so yeah yeah and I haven't mentioned by the way Jack Driscoll's back we were in the locker room yesterday B and Jack Driscoll walks by me I'm like what's going on here um very similar to one Jim Bob cter just showed up oh yeah Nick said hey there's Jim Bob um and Jack Driscoll comes down he says hey how you doing gives me the the hello and uh recently got married uh so congratulations Jack Driscoll is back on the practice squad uh as you mentioned they also signed another receiver who's got some punt return ability more of a Shifty slot type uh in in Kyle Phillips um and yeah so the churn on the practice squad continues but boy it's nice to get Jack Driscoll out I mean that's a pretty good backup player uh and I'm a little bit concerned with with the depth on the offensive line as a whole uh to get a a guy who started games and and and plays a bunch of different positions um those stman guys man it runs deep with them if there's an opport poor sua tore his ACL I think he might be back if he didn't tear his ACL uh he likes his guys and um no negative for Jack Driscoll being back and from that standpoint agree or disagree absolutely I mean he has 17 starts 54 career games played he's played it both guard and Tackle you know had kind of a rough game filling in for Lane Johnson uh when price off yeah exactly and and the Jets last year but then he he had that like rough start to the Bills game I think he gave up like a pressure like in the first snap or whatever it was but then really settled in and obviously the Eagles won that game after that so he wasn't a total liability didn't wreck the game um definitely worse offensive line options that you can have on your practice squad than a guy with like legitimate starting experience and uh and versatility like Jack just and he and he made it's not like he just like the Dolphins cut him because he stunk out loud like he made the Dolphins initial roster it's just they cut him because they wanted to make the waiver claim yeah and they were trying by the way I I was talking they were trying to play him at Center as well so it was a little bit uh you know something he was learning um and you have to do that as a backup uh offensive lineman but that's not easy to do that's the one position he didn't play um and they were trying to teach him that so you know maybe some issues there but yeah I I think it's uh a a smart move by The Eagles I think it's a good move by the Eagles and who knows I could see him being elevated to the 53 pretty quickly um uh if things get back going uh Green Bay though um very good team we've talked about this in the past I do not like this game from the Eagles perspective of I would have fought for Cleveland now the easiest way to stop that narrative because I think it's going to continue all season blg if they lose this game because I think this is going to be one of the other really good teams in the NFC and it could be uh tiebreaker down the road and the fact that that game's not at Lincoln Financial Field I'm I'm a little bit surprised cheffrey lurry didn't fight for Cleveland a little bit more but there's an easier way there's an easy way to stop that and that's win the game can they win this game blg or is this just a tough matchup because it's a really good offense against a young evolving defense yeah I always like seeing like a division game in week one for the sake of like there's there is the pressure of like hey you need to start the season off on the right foot some people might think of it like well you don't want to be in that 0 and one hole well then good don't lose like but that you know make sure you win it's important to show who you are early on especially coming off of that um uh disastrous collapse that the Eagles just did and I think it would be a real confidence booster to beat this Packers team that finished the season red hot last year kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum over the Eagles were and I know they lost to the 49ers but I thought kind of outplayed the 49ers in that I thought they did yeah so like I think this Packers team is really good I have them number two in the power rankings I did for bleeding green Nation just only behind the Chiefs like this is a really young Team Jordan love I know he's been inconsistent but I think that consistency I started to see more of that late last season as that young team started to really grow into themselves and there were times last year where like Jordan love looked like Aaron Rogers just how he played it was like scary similar and then just even like the the me some of the mechanics and all of it it was really uncanny um so uh yeah I think this is a really good young team and Matt he's average 11.8 wins per season this this is a coach who's really good too uh so yeah I think this is a really good to turn I gotta be honest with you a full disclosure I I was not a big Matt lefl guy I I you know kind of dismissed he had Aaron Rodgers it was 131313 with Aaron Rodgers and then you don't get over the top and it's like well Aaron's running the freaking show um how much you credit you're going to give to Matt laflor and then they had the one Bad season eight wins not bad but eight wins they only had nine wins with Jordan love but they were great down the stretch um and they seem to be getting better but yeah I mean honestly the same thing's going to happen to me this year with the Jets like I'm giving Robert Salah no credit right off the bat if they turn into and I think the Jets will be a Super Bowl Contender as funny as that sounds if Aaron Rogers is healthy um and we have to see I mean that's a big injury for an old guy so same thing with Kirt cousins in in the NFC um that's a difficult injury I imagine at that stage of the game but over the past two years I've he's only had eight nine wins but I've given him more credit um and I think he is i' I've started to turn and say well maybe Matt laflor is pretty good um so I don't know if he deserved all the credit early because I think you and I could have coached that team and got 13 wins um but the last couple years I'm pretty impressed by what he's been able to do even though the numbers haven't been as good win wins wise yeah I think at the very least you can say like he's not getting in the way right he's not like sinking he's not bringing the team down um he might not be doing the most but he at the very least he is facilit ating the success um especially offensively you know obviously they've had defensive issues and it seems like you know I don't know if they're making the right defensive coordinator hires or if it's a person yeah I I don't know about that one that one's off the off the radar for me Jeff Hatley although he was a DBS coach in the NFL for a long time before he went back to college um so maybe part of it is that but boy it's crazy we always talk about Andy Reid's 1999 coaching staff locally um ever see that Washington I guess 2013 coaching staff my God it is unbelievable um must feel great if you're a Washington fan yeah I know well and they didn't have any real success but they were okay back then I mean it was still it was still Mike Shanahan so they were okay but I mean the assistance on that staff I I gotta pull it up it's crazy um boy K well obviously Kyle Mike Mike was the Mike was the head coach Kyle was the offensive coordinate Matt llor was the quarterback's coach Mike McDaniel was the tight ends coach Shawn McVey uh Shawn McVey was the tight ends coach Mike was the uh wide receivers coach um and then have other big name guys Jim Haslett was on that stab uh Bob slowick who became a head coach Raheem Morris who's a head coach it's unbelievable it's and it it's really you know Kyle Matt laflor Mike McDaniel Shawn McBay but um and they're all close and they all run the same style of offense it's all the Shanahan kubak offense and that's sort of like the Vic fangio offense that's like the offense that everybody wants to run sort of like big banjo's defense was the defense everybody wanted to run but it's pretty amazing coaching staff um I tangent but uh when you when you talk about that Packers offense um and all the young Playmakers at receiver any concern about I found it funny that big fangio was really and let's press pause on jayen Carter like he knows how good jayen Carter is but he's playing it very I think he wants to light a fire under him sure and with quinon he's like yes yes he's ready and he's is he is he gonna be successful yes um why do you think why do you think he's taking those two tacks with those two players um maybe there's a little bit of like humbling that he feels like could go into it for a second-year player who's kind of you know shown already has done some good things things it's not like Jay Carter needs the confidence boost he's pretty confident enough whereas you know quinan a rookie and especially at a position two where we always talk about like confidence is extremely maybe the most important of any position at quarterback maybe kind feeding that confidence and uh you know quon's as we know is a kind of a he's confident from what we can tell he's also kind of a quiet guy so maybe there's something going into that uh some reassurance that kind of will kind of feed that a little bit and go a longer way for him but yeah I mean two I mean both of those players are I I think so was doing an exercise um uh where like you know trying to determine like the second most you know like valuable player on the Eagles defense obviously number one you're going to say Jaylen Carter this year but like who is that second player and I don't think it's a no-brainer I don't think it jumps out at you I think it could be quinan though I think quinan um and that's that's a lot of pressure to put on a rookie quarterback who you know players at that position don't always just come in or typically do not come in and light the world on fire right away but everything we've seen from him everything coaches say about him everything his teammates say about him I mean there's just it's very encouraging yeah it really is I it's interesting question number two I would say Jordan Davis right next to it but yeah you can make an argument for quinan you can make an argument for slle make an argument for DJ I think um has a playmaking uh safy hopefully uh gets back to what he was um yeah that's an interesting uh I gotta think I gotta mul that one always uh plg gives me good ideas uh and I appreciate that Jordan because if you lose Jordan that entire defense changes the way it looks yeah but also like I think it's also like going for like you know confidence LEL of like who you know who would almost be the second best player and I think he's important but I don't I don't have like the confidence yet that Jordan that guy yeah and quinon the thing about quinan is like if you're gonna take Vic at face value which I think everybody does because he's so brutally honest on all the other players I'm gonna take him at face value on quinan and he seems to be very happy with what Quan's done yeah which is good enough for me as a guy who's not at practice you know to to have some confidence in him coming into the season I mean the actions you know speak the loudest and the fact we're assuming you know he follows through and quinan plays 100% of the snaps in week one that's I think that's incredibly impressive um for a rookie quarterback and you know probably helps that what he was one of the was he the first defensive player taken or if not like second UCLA guyu yeah okay but like first defensive back um so you know I guess that makes more sense maybe than another years's but uh and for relative to where he was drafted but yeah I mean yeah I think Turner uh Turner may have went before him to he would have been but he was the first Corner um he he was definitely the first Corner um and I think Turner um yeah I think Minnesota trade it up to get him um but it's still pretty impressive and I and I think we all looked at that draft and said man when is a defensive player coming off Turner was supposed to be you know right on the cby being a top 10 guy um and guys kept falling and falling and falling and I I think the Eagles were very surprised that quinan Mitchell was there at number 22 and I think it's shown that way early that he probably should have come off the board a little bit early you see we just talked about Patrick ceran his contract if you hit on one of these young Corners s Gardner's been that way um even JC horn a player when he's been Healy on a bad team has been a really good player um yeah I mean that could solve a serious issue for the Eagles moving forward uh it's G to be interesting with Isaiah Rogers though um at Brandon gon uh make sure you follow uh blg on X uh the xplatform read them at bleeding green.com each and every day um I guess all end it there with with Isaiah Rogers in this uh thought process of of quinan playing 100% of the snaps and it it it looks like he's going to start outside move inside um and I've asked you this before but now that we're close and we're on the cusp of it so you just keep them outside and not mess with it and be cheese mine I think I go back to what they said or Vic said specifically Aly and it's just about you know getting your the most talented your best players on the field as much as you possibly can and you know I think obviously there has to come a point where you parse through that and it might not be the most conducive if you're switching roles and whatnot and but I think that's that's okay to try at least early in the season I think this is the time to try it as opposed to obviously when you're getting down to the the most important meaningful games late in the year in the playoffs and whatnot if you're going to try it I think it's fair to try it now see how much quinan can handle he is very good I also like the matchup with some of those you know it's not like um I I think the players that the Packers have at receiver and how they rotate their guys and how the target distribution is really spread out I think it's okay to have quinon playing in different spots and you might want to match him up on different guys um or conversely have him follow someone if you really feel like that there's a lot of different options and flexibility I think now my my one concern with that thought which I get it I understand it and Christian Watkins to me uh Watson sorry um to me is the best of the pack like nobody knows it because he's always hurt but in those short windows when he's healthy he's like a size speed measurables freak that nobody can deal with um and he's six4 he might be 6'5 I don't know what he is how's Isaiah Rogers dealing with that yeah that's I mean Eagles saw this firsthand right when they played the Packers back in 2022 I mean would Watson have at least one big play or one big touchdown against them in that game man he's never out there he's always hurt but when he's out there he just makes plays and plays and plays yeah the ceiling the Christian Watson ceiling is very high it can be very high the floor can also be a little low but the floor can be or the ceiling can be high yeah blg A lot's been made of the offense this off season Kell Moore new offensive coordinator they're bring and saquon Barkley what's your expectation for this offense coming into week one and how different will it look from last year yeah that's the big question right I mean I think we're going to see differences in terms of more pre- snap motion than the least in the NFL um especially that lines up with what we saw in training camp we were seeing that on a pretty regular basis I think we're going to see more Devonte Smith in the slot I think that's going to be you know more of a factor we've heard that from you know the players even noticing Devonte Moore on the inside there um um and the S La show is coming well we'll see we'll see we'll see just how often he's used I you I would guess it's a lot but uh Kenny gainwell doesn't seem to be a total non-factor right that's you would agree with that John I'm guessing yeah so um I think it's G to be I mean when I just look at the talent I have high expectation and Jaylen her's coming off of what I feel like is his best training camp I mean there's there's incredibly high expectations for this offense um I think they're going to be there's no reason to think they shouldn't be top 10 by the way have you gotten a lot of I forgot to ask you have you gotten a lot of from Eagles fans Josh Jacobs is washed don't worry about him this week which they may be right from my standpoint I'm like he he coming off a terrible year I didn't understand the Packers move off Aaron Jones other than he's had his own injury issues but I think he's a better fit for their offense um and they may completely be right but then I say to myself Josh Jacobs is a year younger than S he's got less touches in his career than saquon Barkley I mean you got to look in the mirror if you say one guy's washed you might say I ask you these every week but it's a different way to frame it I don't um play Fantasy Football just because I feel like it's too much of a Time suck for me personally in the season I can't but I I keep tabs on it and I you know have friends who play and you know I like to weigh in sometimes or advice or I was helping someone manage a team last year I can do that if someone can do the heavy lifting I can you know weigh in here and there but this year um kind of just based on what I've been reading and seeing I thought Josh Jacob seem like underrated and undervalued in some of these fantasy discussions so I haven't seen like Eagle s specifically you know saying that you know they're not afraid of him but I've seen like I think the fantasy football or a lot of the you know just casually at least I think you get the Articles like actually Josh Jacobs could be a really a steal and a good value and I kind of lean more towards that way I think he could bounce back after bad year last year and be like a really nice player I don't know for how long after this season but at least this year I think he could be a really nice piece in this offense um interesting that the Packers are fairly banged up at running back here because um yeah they don't have no AJ Dylan either no Dylan yeah marshan Lloyd miss practice on Tuesday um their third string running back I forget name but he was on the injury report too so they are a little banged up there um so that'll be interesting to see I think you might want Lloyd out there cuz he is a fumbling machine if I remember from college so um that might help the Eagles but uh yeah it'll probably be a lot of Josh Jacobs from a a running back standpoint for the Packers and it'll be interesting because there's a ton of Playmakers on both sides so are you predicting a shootout blg yeah I do think it'll be exciting high-scoring game I think the NFL would certainly not mind that in a Friday night Spotlight and Brazil International I think they uh I would think they're not rooting for a defensive struggle like it's a 10 to three kind of game um so maybe the officiating kind of works in that way too uh who knows uh yeah Ron torbert by the way I saw is your referee if you're a referee guy Ron torbert okay is it torbert torbert I think torbert yeah yeah anyway if you're a referee guy uh be pretty good preview uh defense has a tall task Johnny Mack I think coming into this game that's uh what I continue to think about this I think both defenses do I think you know yeah I do too but I mean specifically talking about the Eagles I think they have an uphill battle on the defensive side of the ball but I mean Green Bays I don't I don't like their higher you know that actually I'm in the I'm in it can't be much worse than it was with John Barry so but I I didn't understand the hire with their defensive coordinator bringing back a college coach although he does have some NFL experience as a DBS coach um Eric Wilson I I don't like is they're starting they have a very good front but I think that's strength versus strength um in in with the Eagles offensive line so maybe that kind of um exes each other out um Cher Alexander very good player but again I I don't I know I like the AJ brown match up against anybody uh including a player like that um savier mckin so they have some good players but they have a tough time I imagine Jeff hapley is not sleeping on the plane to Brazil trying to figure out you know where to start with the Eagles offense yeah no doubt about that good stuff there John I do have one I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna prepare you for this Johnny Mac I have a super chat for you you're not going to like it no it's not the first won't be the last rich not thank you for your 10 bucks man we appreciate your Super Chat uh even if Johnny Mack pushes back on you he says been bothering me JM has been a PFF fad but laughed at Madden rankings what's the difference EA uses an analytics extensively approach educate me Johnny well I hey I don't dislike that I mean I I I don't know what mad does to do their rankings but I I know 32 NFL teams aren't clients of theirs uh when it comes to uh analytics and proprietary information I know 32 NFL teams subscribe uh to pro football focuses work and I know X NFL Scouts great film at at PFF I don't know what Madden does um and I think it's just a bunch of of and I'm sure it when it's become more popular I'm sure they've gotten uh a little bit more involved and a little more little bit more legitimate so I'm sure it's gotten better over the years um but yeah my my take on is the Players take it so seriously and the players take it so seriously because they play a lot of video games and to them it's important and they want to show up and be successful and Madden but then I think you look at the rankings and some of the rankings are brutal so that's what it and I always say about PFF it's not gospel you don't have to like him there's a ton of context number one you have to understand what they're trying to do I always try to explain that you know they're grading every play and they're grading the responsibilities on every play play some of the things they're not giving more credit to that they probably should when you boil it down to a number is Splash plays for instance well Splash plays have more of an impact on the game explosive plays as coaches will tell you than just doing your job consistently every play so I've always said like the five tool player in baseball is not as important as the gu is going to crack the three-run Home Run and he might strike out the three other times he's up the plate but he might win the game on the four ter it's big impact on the game so there's a lot of context to it but what I describe at PFF if they say somebody's playing well they're playing well if they say somebody's playing poorly they're playing poorly and people don't like it when their favorites they say they're playing poorly but they love when they say they're playing great so with Eagles fans I always get well Lane Johnson is great you know and PFF tells you is good stuff John let's put your recap on today's episode Devon white is out that was the breaking news of the episode and we got into a pretty good preview of the game with our two guests um how you feeling as we get closer and closer to this Friday night game Johnny Mack um yeah I I hasn't shipped I I thought noobi would be out there he's going to be out there I didn't know that they were not going to travel Devin white so that part's new to me but I expected uh ncoe Dean to be the starting middle linebacker um and he's going to be so that part isn't surprising to me I I think that's positive for the Eagles standpoint I think he's their best linebacker anybody who's listened to the show for the past three four weeks understands that um so that hasn't shifted things dramatically for me um I am I was a little bit concerned um about a week ago if Vic was going to keep going down that route when I said you know it's become obvious to me I'd be dis appointed if it hasn't come obvious to Beck but over the last week it was kind of clear behind the scenes that the Kobe was going to be the starter um and that's the way it should be so that part hasn't changed and I I do think what we just talked about with h blg it's going to be a shootout so I don't think either of these defenses are equipped to deal with what they're going to face um in Brazil no doubt Johnny M good show
