ANGEL GOMES UNITED RETURN IN JAN? The New Scholes? Manchester United Transfer News

welcome back to United TV hopefully everything's working okay and if it does just let me know as soon as the stream starts so I can get involved to make sure it's going going okay um one of the things I want to talk about today a little bit changed from talking about ten hog talking about the infrastructure of the club and talking about all the things that aren't very positive I wanted to F sh on something that is a positive ex Manchester United player Gomez is going to be making his full England International debut but before we go into all the sort of background about that in terms of why Gomez left Manchester United what he's done since he left Manchester United and why Manchester United might be interested in and why this might work out for the player and the club we'll go into that for but I want to start off with Angel Gomez as a lot of Manchester United fans will know very highly reg regarded player he he worked his way all the way through the youth and was on The Fringe of being a first team player then decided to leave Manchester United and I think a lot of Manchester United fans at that time were were quite disappointed with har Pand out he he was destined to be one of the the future stars for Manchester United it didn't quite go that way and just um if you're watching do you think this is one that I've made this point a few times where you look at X play usually I look at it think I would rather say if you're Manchester United and you got an opportunity like Memphis toie it didn't work out angle Gomez didn't really get going at Manchester United at Manchester United he played under Allon solar made his debut then the next season he only got two opportunities so with that in mind you got a choice at Manchester United do you want to just stick around maybe not get many opportunities at all you're effectively wasting one or two years of what could be important development time for a young player so what he did he took the opportunity he decided he refused to sign a contract he left he went to Le and he's been there a few years and since then he's been pretty much on an upward trajectory first team player I think last season he might have played 45 games so he's know he's he's made the right decision you can't question what he's done in terms of the right decision I think a lot of people are just wondering like how good is he like how well has he done and I'm looking at the Manchester United Team at the moment thinking is he a player that would fit what man United want I know Manchester United at the moment they're they're really trying to work out how they can improve Midfield agat has yet to actually play for Manchester United so there's a question mark of whether we even know where agat is going to play is he going to play as a defensive midfielder which a lot of people are thinking but talking to other people recently that have watched him and they're they're thinking that maybe his strength would actually be playing more as an eight which again throws up the question of who's going to play that role but if you got any points or any comments you've got on him now let me know because I think it's an interesting one he is a great player and it's recently been a bit more in the news because of his England debut so there's a few quotes from ex players as well talking about Gomez and one of the descriptions of him in terms of a player is that he is quite versatile so in terms of Manchester United looking for flexibility Ang Gomez could be one that tis quite a few boxes just um before I go into more detail want like say shout out to York cowboy and hope you're doing well and Mark as well hope you're doing well and one of the one of the questions will be also is is the current setup at Manchester United an attractive Prospect for Gomez because one of the stories that has been in the news the last last probably couple of days because of the England callup was is Manchester United a good option for Gomez at this stage of his career he's had a lot of success at Lil he's done very well in the end of 21 Springland he's going to finally play for the first team we're going to see what sort of player he is at International level which I think is going to be quite exciting for football fans in general anyway but does he look at Manchester United is an attractive place to develop and it's a skill set what actually Manchester United require so these are the things as well like sh shout out to Andrew as well as someone saying that Gomez was brilliant from England under 21 one of the things that I've read recently and it's quite interesting to know what ex players think and players that have been around the team and one of the things that they said in terms of Gomez this is from a Manchester United graduate Danny Weber he's saying that Gomez like Andrew said in the comments Gomez is physically quite small so I think it's like 5 fo five 5' six it's a physically quite small player what they're saying in terms of in terms of how he sees the game and how he impacts the game he's one of these players that's highly regarded in terms of Harry Reed's game intelligence and it's one of those things that it's a difficult it's difficult to differentiate between players once they get a similar level of understanding I think with Gomez he got this level of understanding at quite a young age so the way they're comparing him they're comparing him to someone like Paul skulls and Paul skoles if you're talking about elite football players like Paul skulls is right at the top of elite football players if you're talking about players like that as the ball's approaching Paul skulls Paul skulls already knows exactly what he wants to do he knows exactly what's happening on the pitch he knows exactly where he wants to put that pass and if you look at someone like Gomez the way they're describing him in terms of Paul skulls isn't necessarily his range of passing his ability Al that has been is been quite talked up about recently is the way he sees the game the way he can make the correct decisions and he's getting a lot of Praise more as attacking midfielder something that Manchester United you look at a if AAR comes in I don't know how it's going to work out but nobody really knows exactly how it's going to work out is he going to play as a holding midfielder is he going to need people in front of him is it going to help that camir can play further forward is someone like Gomez possibly going to be one of those players we were linked to rabio and for me rabio is a is a it feels a bit like an emergency option that if there's not a better option rabio might be the player you go for but someone like Gomez would feel a bit more in line with Manchester United's current strategy so from Manchester United's club's point of view I think Gomez would be a more attractive signing you've got a player there that's sort of approaching some of the peak years of his career each year he's making progression each year he's improving he's obviously ambitious because he was willing to leave Manchester United go abroad to try and further his career he'd been at Manchester United since the age of six so this wasn't a decision he just suddenly decided to turn on Manchester United he looked at his career saw it wasn't going to go anywhere if he didn't get opportunities at United and has done the the best thing that he he could have done so looking at this in terms of how they describe him say he can control a game he's been played know a lot as a left midfielder Center forward he's played different positions but he been played more the a central midfielder and one of the things he's really good at is setting up play dictating play and that's something that do Manchester United have someone that can do that and I think in terms of what how how good he is on the ball is he going to be one that you can rely on a bit more and so that's like Bruno will get the criticism because of how he gives the ball away I think you look at Gomez ball retention is a lot lot better so I'm I'm going to go for a few comments I think some people are making some very good points and Andrew said he likes him but we have to start improving the physicality of our team I I would say I used the word balance quite a lot last night and some people don't like it but you look at it and go agar could come in and do some phys know physical stuff in Midfield but you look at Manchester United's team now if someone like Bruno was to leave and people think okay maybe Bruno is approaching the end of his career as a Manchester United player or as a player at the very top level if you make that argument and there's reasons why you might think that who actually comes in to replace him whether someone like Gomez can can step up to that level we're we're going to find out over the next few years how good Gomez can be but at the moment you look at Gomez he's an attractive option in terms of someone that can actually play that further up the pitch so I'm looking at this and thinking Manchester United at the moment might have to try and sell the project to Gomez and looking at the way things are going a lot might depend on who's in charge at the time if T's still in charge I know some people on social media are questioning whether he gets the best out of players that might be a factor as well but I think in also going to be looking at this and I know that a lot of people behind the scenes will be thinking that changes might be in place pretty quickly I wanted to look at the comments here in terms of like Jules is saying Gomez has been compared to Frankie dong and we know this Saga about Frankie dong Frankie dong has a lot of other baggage as well in terms of like he wanted to stay at Barcelona he was owed a lot of money by Barcelona Gomez is a younger player I think Gomez is someone that it's probably one of these things that when people looked at understanding what Manchester United is all about Gomez knows 100% what it's all about and he left probably at the right time for him because the way the club was being run by the people at the top it was not it was not going to work out too well in your scenario I put a lot of things in place even yesterday I think they signed another executive so they're putting more and more people in place they're going to carry on doing this until everything improves I mean you can't keep making these decisions at board level putting in more and more experienced people that have got a good track record and not eventually start turning things around now the players have almost got a new team in the last couple couple of Seasons we're going to be doing more business in January because of the high-profile High salary players our budget has gone if you look at the amount of money spent on salaries that's gone down a huge amount so I think we're creating a lot of flexibility for January and next summer so for me Gomez could certainly be the there's no reason why Manchester United couldn't offer him a good deal if they wanted to and as an alternative to Frankie D young I think it makes sense it's at the moment it's a maybe a question of how good is Gomez and I think you are you are paying you might be paying a price in terms of like giving him big contract because you're you're hoping that he's going to develop into the player that Frankie Jong is now or you're hoping he going to develop into somewhat of a player that skulls was that that's a a big shout those are two EX good players so you're taking a bit of a punch but with you're refusing to sign a contract at Li I don't think it's going to be a crazy amount of money you can have to spend to get him they're going to I don't know how much money they're asking for but I think this is going to be not an expensive player to buy and I think the salary demands would not be expensive either so for me it seems like quite a good deal for United I don't know what people think in the comments so I'll just go if you got if you got strong views either way let me know and um I'll go for some of the comments Anthony good to see you Anthony it's been a while I hope you're doing well he says big up rich hope you're well and do you think United should keep T hog he's won two trophies in three seasons what are your thoughts so I was I was trying to avoid about t hog I think the issue is now that Manchester United they've won two trophies but what we really want to do is to see Manchester unit climbing up the league finishing now finishing eight is nowhere near good enough and your argument about the trophy is great but Wigan won the FA Cup and got relegated so in terms of improving week in week out Manchester United need to be more consistent on the pitch in that case turn hog has got some time in your son sacked him over the summer when they could have after finishing e they've given him some time they giving him some new players so I think if Manchester United start turning things around in the next couple of months everything will be fine but ten hugs got a chance to save his job and Matty said we're only talking about Gomez but good good point Matthew we're only talking about Gomez returning to United because he's got an England call up and this was actually they they're asking him about potential returns to the Premier League Gomez said in an interview that he's been offered returns to the Premier League but what he's doing really is he's trying to do what is right for him so when he left Manchester United it was a good thing for him to go to the French league it was a good thing to for him to be a first team player and now what he's going to look at is what would be a good fit for him at the next stage of his career when it comes to January like a lot can happen in football we we could be looking at Manchester United beating Southampton beating Barnsley beating Spurs and Villa and talking about okay look we're we're back we're playing much better football the new signings work out the's amazing Midfield this could happen we we could be discussing about a very different Manchester United in a couple months time or or the the worst case scenario for tenh is that we we don't win any of those games we struggle he gets sacked a new manager comes in so there's two extremes at the moment it really could go either way I couldn't actually make a prediction which way it's going to go and York Sho says not for him in terms of signing too long in a poor League this is talking about the French league well we're going to see though we're going to see him at International level and see what he can do then against top quality players so we might get a bit more of an idea at the moment it's still a punt but he says um mctom did pretty well at International level as well you look at mbappe mbappe's um gone to more difficult league so we're going to see but I think mbappe he's a World Cup winner he's a great International player Andrew said Newcastle would be a good fit which is is potential Newcastle their budgets are been a bit less recently they were trying to get gain but couldn't afford him so maybe newcastle's a good option as well he would fit in there I think he'd be a first team player there as well and Manchester United what I like about is thinking if you go at g in we do need a bit more depth and I think if you if the question was would you rather sign Gomez or sign rabio what would be the answer to then actually I'll put a poll in for that quickly because I'll be interested to get opinion so this is the poll for people in the chat like if you had an option here also tonko hope you're doing well mate it's great to see you in the comments I know we we spoke a lot on on Twitter but um he said and this is a this is something I actually agree on the huge hole in Midfield and if you watch Manchester United against Liverpool it was most apparent if you watch manchest United a lot last season it's it's always there it the the worry I've got regarding our our Midfield is that we will end up replacing every single player on the pitch and we'll have a completely different 11 to what we had two years ago and we will still have the whole in Midfield because you have to separate the system from the individual players and you have to look at it and say players follow instruction largely you can't have 10 different combinations of midfields you can't have different combinations of forwards you can't have 11 different players on the pitch and see exactly the same problem and blame each individual player for two years you you have at some point you have to look at it and go this system does not work and if we don't change the system and it gets more and more exploited then we're going to have a different manager with a different system and then we can come see if that makes a difference because that's the way I'm looking at it if people will agree with that I'm not sure I don't blindly black the manager in same way I don't blindly back players but I do think you get given a fair chance this is the third season there's a lot of transfers coming in I think Christmas is where you look at it and go Christmas time you played half a season the team is largely the players you wanted we signed the goalkeeper you wanted we signed a lot of the players on the pitch the players you wanted the only players you didn't really sign are probably Bruno who got given a new contract so you have to imagine they must back him and then the only players really got got odalo and rashford so you've got at least eight or nine starters that are players that signed in the last couple of Seasons so I think I think excuses are running a bit thin now and Billy hope you're doing well Billy Billy's got another question as well Billy I can't really talk about Anana too much today because it'll be a long stream otherwise but I think um in terms of like Jan not January transfer window but in terms of next summer transfer window I think Manchester need to seriously look at if we see another another season like we saw last season I think you have to look and say there's other goalkeepers out there that can do more and I think it's it's one of the things it wasn't the most PRI urgent priority at this window I think the most urgent priority was clearly about reducing the squad numbers and I think if you look at that the amount of squad members that have gone out either they're players that don't play much they were players that were running down the contracts or the players that had come through the youth and would deemed not good enough what whatever the reason is for multiple different reasons Manchester United lost I think it's 17 players and they signed I think seven came in if you take first team players and youth players so we're 10 less than we were so the the squad is somewhat a lot smaller there's a lot fewer options and the salaries have gone down quite a lot the biggest biggest salaries are are off the books aren't they from DAV last season was on a big salary they're trying to move on casemiro I don't know if it's salary related or other reasons but Marshall went veran left so Sal salaries have gone down a lot and that's one that's one of ino's strategies there's a question about what goalkeepers right there and that's a good point as well I I have to check that and if anyone's got any suggestions there'll definitely be some goalkeepers out there I think that in terms of like trying to attract goalkeepers to United I don't think they'll have a problem but I'm going to put a poll in the chat which um we can quickly go through and this is going to be a straight question of if you had the choice who would you sign so let me put this in quickly at the moment I would start a different keeper over an Anor I've said that before I think you have to actually say look to Anana your your position on the team and people have said this about and anony Sancho martial rashford every single player on the pitch you look at this and go Nana if he put us in another disappointing performance I think he needs to be taken out of the team just to just to say that you can't have an argument where players have to earn their position on the pitch and have the same goalkeeper for the whole season so this is going to be a poll now about about an option about who would you rather sign it'd be an interesting one you got two players here where you're looking at one that's is about potential and one where it's maybe about longevity so people are going to have the abuse on rabio because of you know potential baggage and also what's his reason for joining Manchester United you look at Gomez and think know what again it's a bit more it's a bit more of an unknown quantity isn't it with Gomez because we know what rabo can do so it would feel like a a safer option maybe maybe less exciting with Gomez it's it's a bit difficult what's Gomez is ceiling it's it's really difficult to call but um Harry Potter saying we have a a keeper with T-Rex arms I would say we have a keeper that that dives after the ball hits the back of the net sometimes and I don't think it matters about that I mean he definitely didn't have T-Rex arms when he was punching a a wolves player in the head instead of getting the ball so I don't think that's the the issue I think there's a there's um deeper lying issues than that so the situation with rabio which we discussed briefly yesterday and um so I know I know there's some fans of rabio let's put a picture of rabio up for the rabio rabio fans I'm not going to say anything too negative about rabio so the situation with rabio out of contract I believe he wants these figures I don't know how accurate they are but I believe he wants 40 million over three years so I haven't got time to work out how much money that is I think it's a lot of cash but people that don't want rabio say mercenary and it's it's difficult isn't it I think with rabio rabio is playing for the French national team something which I'm pretty sure he wants to carry on doing the only way he does that is to get himself in a good club play regular football and the risk he's got is having if he had a bad season at Manchester United he might be done internationally so I think with that it's it's a difficult one so I'm I'm expecting this will be a close poll I'm not actually 100% sure which I would prefer so I think it's quite exciting to talk about a player that could potentially have a long career at Manchester United and with like Gomez people are people are comparing him to skulls which you look at that and think okay I need to actually look at this player a bit more because if people start comparing him to Paul skulls then that's um a difficult one to live up to so Gomez has actually said himself and this is a quote from him that he would he would say he would describe himself as just a midfielder saying he can play as a deep line playmaker he can play as an eight he can play as a 10 so one of the one of the keys with Gomez and this is it from his own words as well that is flexibility but Yorkshire Cowboy is saying in terms like rabio rabio COPE in the Premier League and Yorkshire is comparing him like you have to look at these players and say do they displace players in our Squad do they improve our Squad and one of the things you can look at is that is he an improvement over Erikson and you say the way we want to play you'd have to say he is an improvement over Erikson because we've seen that ER Ericson if he stays and doesn't leave in the transfer window and the transfer window in other club other countries hasn't shut he's actually not going to play many games ravier would come in and definitely play games um y saying he thinks it's 275k a week for rabio I'm sure it's not going to be that much I don't think rabu could possibly get anywhere near that if he tried um y says rabio okay on on the free market as a transfer would ravu actually cost 60 million like Yi suggesting like what would be a realistic transfer value for rabio I would I would suggest that towards his stage of his career I think transfer fees are going down I know we spent a crazy amount of money like we spent 50 plus on Anana we spent 50 plus on Martinez we spent 80 plus on Anthony but look at the transfers this this year why would rabio cost more than delit and mazari combined why would he cost more than nte I I would think that a realistic transfer you got to look more like not half of that but maybe maybe like 30 million I don't think 60 million would be realistic price for rabio but we'll go for a few comments um no not rabio Billy people are not saying that Rab's Paul skulls people are saying that Gomez they're comparing Gomez to Paul skulls and the reason they're comparing Gomez to Paul skulls is that his ability to read the game his ability to make decisions his ability Intelligence on the pitch so they're comparing Gomez to Paul skulls rabio I'm not seeing comparisons to he's not being compared to anybody so the story was that Gomez people that have worked with him in the the Academy I think Nanny actually there's a quote from Nanny saying that he didn't want to teach him too much he was too good so I'm not sure exactly what Nanny was referring to but he's he's highly regarded that's the thing and bil saying Gomez is nowhere near skulls I watch the England match if he plays I think to compare someone to Paul skulls is pretty much setting them up for failure because I've made it clear myself that Paul go for me is possibly the greatest midfielder in Manchester United have had since I've been watching Manchester United in terms of ability to read the game ability to pick out a pass ability to control a game I've sat in the stretford end and watched skulls completely control every single game he played and it and it's it's quite of ridiculous when you watch a team that had Rooney Ronaldo TZ bov but if you got someone that skulls actually pulling all the strings and dictating everything it's if you compare someone with him it's to me it's it's crazy but we'll see how he can get on if anyone can like let me know how long the stream's been going I probably need to wrap up in about five minutes I just wanted to really just discuss a bit more positive than than the manager if anyone's got any final questions I'll say just get them in really quickly and I'll try and go through them as fast as I can I know there's a bit of a stream delay but I'll try and try and get involved so question from Mark hi Mark Mark says does tonog need sacking yesterday um thoughts on Thomas Frank from from what I've seen of Thomas Frank it's interesting you mention him because someone I reg to do podcasts with it was quite a big fan of Thomas Frank although Manchester United fans don't like him because of the things he said about players I can't remember who it was now but the Thomas Frank tactically seems to have done probably about as well as he can with brenford there are now team that they don't have anywhere near the resources Manchester United do I don't forget they did Hammer us 4-0 so in terms of like trying to play pressing style Thomas Frank's done really well he's he's a manager that's done really well with the resources he had at his disposal he's lost Tony still did a good performance last week he's um aggressive winning the ball back as well brenford just they're a massive problem for play teams trying to play out from the back and if everyone's trying to play out from the back I think Thomas Franks got a good way of playing against them so I think he's a he's a strong candidate for a lot of vacancies I'm surprised he's still at brenford to be honest so 27 minutes okay so I'll go I'll stay live for another five um yeah Frank has got good football actually um anyone anyone got any questions then we can quickly go through um a bit of posit ity about rabio from Elite baller so he's a strong experienced he's got a good shot on him even if wages are high I'm sure anyos would come to an agreement if they really want him and I think if they really want him they can definitely work out a deal which works out like both ways maybe there'll be some incentives if certain Milestones get hit I think with rabio he wants to play for big teams I don't know what happened with the a Milan situation because it did look at one point he was going to sign for AC Milan and I think that that's would have been a pretty good move I mean interesting one to leave Juventus and go to AC Milan two big clubs but it seems like a bit strange that that it hasn't worked out from so far I don't know whether he's just trying to get a bit too much money and maybe that's put some people off and people are looking other other options um York saying that in terms of systems and you could you can say that that the different clubs had different systems and Mark says why is rashford still playing first team football who would you put in his place and if Yorkshire is talking about style of football I think what's um what concerns me a little bit about ten hug and you can have your own views on this what concerns me a bit is I'm seeing the the way that if you question ten hug system he's getting incredibly defensive instead of explaining it or trying to talk about positives or even like coming out and saying look this is what we're trying to work on this is trying what we're trying to do I think it get he gets quite negative quite quick quite defensive so if people are questioning whether he's under pressure I think it's you you can tell he's under pressure there there's a lot of pressure at United Yorkshire says Erton hug is defensively naive I think if you look at if you look at playing attacking football and Manchester United fans want attacking football there has to be a measure of control in terms of like you can't go crazy gung-ho football where you want to play 31 six or whatever it is you can't throw people forward like that and you can look at it I seen marginal improvements possibly but I think the Liverpool One felt like a few steps back so I thought we saw improvements in the first two games and if if we don't have the Liverpool result it suddenly looks like a different story so we're still well as a fan I'm trying not to be too reactive but I was I was so disappointed by the Liverpool game and the thing that disappointed me most was not the 3-nil result it was that it could have been five and it was that Liverpool came out after and said it was easy and their manager said oh we knew what to do it was easy and I saw a few Clips after where this just looks like a training exercise where they just passed around then no one's sprinting they just pass it around and it was it was frankly embarrassing and we didn't manage to change it and our response to try to improve things was taking off one player and just putting on a player from the youth and I think that was that was disappointing so when that happened and I think there's a combination of factors that is making me think that things are going to have to change I I said last night on my podcast went on a long time because someone I knew joined and this is my current view if you're a Manchester United fan things are going to definitely improve because what's going to happen is either ten hug adapts plays a different style of football and it's going to be a successful brand of football or he gets replaced and somebody else comes in and the players we've signed are good enough to definitely play a lot better football and with the changes we made behind the scenes the changes in recruitment Manchester United are going to have a better window in January a better window next summer and the team just going to improve so if you're a Manchester United fan don't get worried just um try try and write it out better than I am because I'm I'm getting a bit um a bit negative about the team because I'm just I'm just thinking it when they say it's going to get worse it it possibly will get worse but if it gets worse then I think changes will happen quite quickly but any any final questions um t thanks for joining again and he said I'm I'm kind of with the same thing I think it might be that I want to see I want to see the manager succeed in the same way that I want to see rashford banging 30 goals I want to see Bruno playing like he did when he first signed I want to see defensive solid solidity I want to see Anana make some world class saves but I'm not sure what it's going to happen and if it doesn't happen before I wrap up let's just go through the poll and see this is like really close and I thought it would be wow okay it was um I think it wasn't quite 50/50 when I I clicked end but who would you rather sign so Manchester United fans you spoken 50% would take rabio 50% would take Gomez let's put Gomez back so 50% take rabio 50% take Gomez I guess it depends on what you look at and think ra rabio is a good player he's he would add to the squad no doubt he would definitely strength forness and for me the only issue against him is possibly it's a short-term signing Gomez fits kind of the the new approach Let's get someone that's young but if we get someone that's young and I'm going to end on this point if we get in young players we got yoro we've got we we haven't got BR fight but he was a player linked heavily we've got xery we've got holand in the team we've got Co Mayo coming through we've got granach coming through maybe Kia's coming through and a player like Gomez if you put all those players into the team there's now responsibility on the manager the coaches everyone at Manchester United there's a responsibility to develop these players and create the environment these players can become the very best they can in their careers because you look at Manchester United that's something that needs to happen you can sign players with all the ability but you need to get them to reach their potential and that's the the concern that we're not going to go the galactico approach we're not going to buy a player that's mid 20 mid soorry late 20s the finished article we're not going to do a real Madrid and go right San Figo Beckham and do that approach we're going to do something which is more sustainable more long term but can we actually do that and that's that's I think that's a big challenge if we can I think the the sky a limit for Manchester United because I think the the academy stock with Talent the team's going to be a very young team so that's the positive I'm holding on to and I'm going to see how this develops if people like watching you and things and if you have ever any stories or interesting things follow me on social media one point Billy I agree with you 100% agarte is the player profile we should have signed when OE had Fred and mctom running things in Midfield if you had those legs in with a quality Central defensive midfielder behind them someone that can just stabilize the team I think we were really close at that point this is a different team now it's a different rebuild and I think we're on the right l but
