49ers RB Jordan Mason relishes opportunity vs Jets

you're listening to the 49 carats podcast a 49ers Gold Mine production with Stephanie [Music] Sanchez what's going on everyone welcome to another edition of the for9 cares podcast I'm your host Steph it is Tuesday September 10th um and I landed safe food back in Colorado just some hours ago after witnessing the 49ers bully the Jets on national television and and we don't always do Tuesday night shows around here but obviously no player of the week show yesterday so me and my usual co-host of Monday Weston took a rain check and uh we're here today for you guys saving you from the uh presidential debate in case you were just watching that and anyway I I'm so glad that we did Today's Show because we have a performance that I think is very much deserved ing of player of the week but let's not get too ahead of ourselves here Weston how you doing today man Victory Tuesday staff um Tuesday it is late here on the East Coast but don't feel bad too bad for me because if it was a Thursday night game a Sunday night game a Monday night game this is roughly about the start of the fourth quarter in terms of East Coast time for for NFL so late night last night late night tonight but all worthwhile and can't wait to talk more about some of these players in these games but how about a round of applause for the hardest working person in 49ers Showbiz Steph was there did one show today he's doing another one today she's committed to y'all oh yeah definitely committed uh appreciate everyone that's tuning in as well and committed to viewing and listening to the channel always appreciate you guys and yes it's so great to be in the swing of the Season again we now have an actual regular season game to talk about and it was a win right one and0 the 49ers start their season off and everyone got to see it in Prime Time won we had a lot of questions about this team obviously and i' have to say I think a good number of them got answered in this game and and I feel pretty freaking confident about this team yeah so here's my conundrum right now is my entire family is asleep right now and I want to be screaming my excitement but I have to temper some of it or I'll never get to bed tonight by waking the children but yeah we had so many questions there was so much uncertainty about just this team and how they would Jael and all the distractions in the off season and look it wasn't perfect last night but you never expect week one to to look Flawless but gosh that it was pretty darn close right I would say it did I ever expect them to lose to the New York Jets no CU where I'm from we know that the Jets are the Jets and they're always going to be the Jets but a lot of hype around that team a lot you know manto man some really good talent up and down that that roster I expected to be a tight sloppy week one Monday night game right that Aman and buck would be pulling their hair out because they had to call it and didn't want to deal with it but the reality is like saw the complete opposite I saw a team that was vibing clicking um having fun out there like you would never have thought they just lost the Super Bowl six and a half months ago like I would I look week one is a liar I don't care what anybody says week one is the biggest liar in the National Football League we still don't we can feel significantly more confident that our team remains right um but we still don't know you know I think some of those things are are still going to be left unanswered but I I was thrilled with the performance because it was not what I expected yeah and you have to consider too the 49ers didn't have a lot of key pieces in in this game obviously we knew Drake green law not going to be in this game telleno funga you know still unavailable but even on the offensive side yeah had Christian mcaffrey um announced as an inactive about 90 minutes before the game that was a shocker uh to most of us right it seems like maybe maybe the 49ers had an inkling of some sort ah Hadad of time although I don't want to speculate um but yeah I mean not having those guys Trent Williams not really at 100% right obviously didn't participate in training camp same with Brandon iuk you're not really sure how those guys are going to look got a rookie have Right Guard all those things like showed out and and worked out for the 49ers I'd say in this game and and even with those missing pieces they still looked really good they still looked dominant even in a game where not everything was clicking perfectly in place I mean that that's kind of obvious too like they but they still got 32 points they still had eight straight scoring drives in this game that that is insane that is impressive and I gotta imagine for opposing teams that is a scary scary thought um that this team isn't even at full strength and they're looking like this yeah I I mean the other the names that you mentioned we were all aware of I think Chris mcaffrey like was the the biggest surprise so much of a surprise I had a buddy reach out on a group chat and be like hey what what so the 49ers is gonna win tonight without Christian mcaffry I was like what are you talking about he's playing and then I like I was like maybe I should investigate that for a second as I'm getting ready for the game and I look down at like my notifications on my phone I'm like what just happened like yeah you know we I mean you heard Christian himself say earlier in the pre if this was a game I'd be playing like if this was a regular season game so clearly that was concerning again goes back to the good defense coming in I'm not a big believer in the NFL script I do think it's funny like I do like talking about it but I don't actually subscribe to The Conspiracy Theory but in my brain I'm like Aaron roders is back the NFL loves Aaron Rodgers he's a poster child at least from the League's perspective they're traveling in it's Monday night it's a year since he last got like it just felt like all the even in the pregame you like watch the pregame you thought it was like I thought it was a Jets home game like it wasn't much about the the ners if I'm being realistic so um but the Christian mcaffry one right like offensive player of the year arguably the league MVP you're like and self- admittedly the offense goes through him every snap and you we know what we had in in Jordan Mason right but like right gosh we've never had to see the full workload of that against this touted defensive line like you didn't know how that was going to go so my long-winded way of agreeing with you Steph in the sense of like holy crap still looked pretty crisp and sharp considering that you know not all the spokes to the wheel were present yeah and also I I must say that Nick Sorenson's first game as defensive coordinator um I mean sure pre-season you can maybe count but like you're not game planning against people um and you're not really making adjustments in preseason games so this was the first true test for him and I think he passed and he passed pretty early in this game for me because you had that drive where Aaron Rodgers was targeting Garrett Wilson looking his way every single snap converted three uh third Downs with Garett Wilson and you think man they got to make some adjustments now I I think they made those uh and rather quickly my my ripe with some of the past defensive coordinators of the 49ers and this probably true with a lot of defensive coordinators right is that they wait until halftime to make all of their adjustments for like the big like and I get it I I get the reason for that um but if there's something like low hanging through like that that you know could be an issue in this game going into it why not have like an idea of what what to do what to adjust um before halftime comes I I feel like the 49ers Nick senson defense nip that in the butt pretty quickly and once they you know try to take Garrett Wilson out of the game um I mean it all kind of fell into place then for the defense and things became a little bit easier in that sense but yeah I was I was impressed with Nick sson I was impressed with some of the new pieces on the defensive line I think Millie Collins uh looked great I think the run defense looked improved so definitely a lot of encouraging signs for me what's so cool about the Nick senson thing too because I I would a th% agree of just like the making the adjustments on the Fly and not waiting till halftime and I think what I like about Nick is that he's not a 30-year defensive coordinator in the league right like I think he's of this younger generation where he's open to the change he's open to conversation with the players it's not his way or the highway and you can't make those in game and by in game I mean like not waiting till halftime changes without the cooperation of of your leaders and your captains right so you know that's influenced by Fred Warner coming over and be like coach I'm seeing this I'm seeing this we didn't see that on tape right okay let's talk about it let's talk about it right now and it helps that you're offense is going on Long sustained drive so you have more time to talk about it that's why it usually waits till half timee because you need a little bit of a window and get but to me that means he's communicating with his players he's communicating with his coaches um and communication goes a real long way in the National Football League and I think that's going to set him up for success and oh by the way it doesn't hurt that he has talent at all three levels to adopt to those changes as well yeah it definitely does not hurt but as we've seen uh you could still make this defense look bad if if you you're taking them out of what they do best as we saw last season but now it looks like they're returning to that 49ers defense 49ers football that we're all pretty familiar with so yeah uh uh I was gonna call you Mason Weston as I take that compliment yeah I mean at this point like that's not too bad right at this point though definitely have to talk about some of these play of the week nominees because like I said I think there's feels like there's an obvious choice um but the there were more than just one you know player that did well in this game and I want to make sure that we have a chance to highlight all of those players and and what they did well in this one um so I'll I'll start with you um Weston um what do you got all right so I'm not taking the most obvious right now because I want I was kind of hoping you wouldn't because I want to talk about it too um so I'm going to start with the person who I could literally not take my eyes off during the game so much to the point where I had to I've never done this live during a 49ers game where I was pausing and rewinding because I was missing snap like the what was actually ha well not entirely but missing what I'm watching for because I couldn't take my eyes off of this player and the name's not going to come as a shock but like what it did to me on Monday night I have no Fred Warner All Pro Fred my God he is just a heat sinking heat seeking missile out there like he is just 150 miles an hour every single snap he is Johnny on the spot every cliche that you can think of about what you want your middle linebacker to be and your defensive captain to be he embodies it is out of this world and it showed up really early we all know as Niners fans he does such a tremendous job not just punching the ball out but doing it while tackling right like he's still so if he misses he's still making a tackle it's not like going for the strip and letting that guy get away but he led the team in tackles a lot of those solo is his I think I think I'd have to pull back up but I remember seeing he was the highest rated defensive player by by PFF I think he was 90 plus like 92 or something like that which is 2.6 a a crazy score for a defensive player but you can't go back and watch this game and tell me that he is not the best football player on the field um I don't know like we've always I feel spoiled that we get to watch this guy play and I know he does this every week and we can put his name up every week but there was just some I don't know if it was just because the Jitters of like week one but he just like I Steph I couldn't I don't have a sexy stat like I just couldn't take my eyes off the guy which tells me that he's involved in everything and the best part about Fred and we can say this about every about him is he does it all the right way like he leads by example he for all accounts of the the standup guy like he the hard worker like you know I'm just thrilled for that young man like he is I know it's the nickname Hall of Fame Fred and I hope we win a Super Bowl for him and not do him dirty like we did P Willie but he is a Hall of Fame football player he is by far in a way the best linebacker in the entire NFL I actually did see a couple people after this game you know mention Fred Warner in the same sentence as Hall of Fame right and I I don't think that's that's far off right for for Fred and I think just based on what he's done what he continues to do like I I put out a tweet I was like and it was pretty early in the game because I saw him flying out there and I was like hey Fred is still that guy pal like he is still he is still that guy he's just so good the way he flies to the ball his Rec his play recognition is among the best in the league you could just tell he does his homework it always feels like he he brings his best games against Aaron Rodgers um and I know some years back Aaron Rogers you know called him the best linebacker and I think he he really took that to heart and so I feel like he always plays extra hard against Rogers for that reason but even still like I I think man he's just the perfect example of what I think everyone wants this defense to embody right and I think especially because you don't have Dre green law out there you know you had DeAndre Campbell you had Demetrius Flanigan fouls as the two other linebackers in this game Fred's gonna outshine everyone I mean and that's that's not even a knock on those guys but like yeah if if you're not green law yeah you're definitely gonna get outshined by by Fred and yeah it was definitely a good performance 92.6 PFF great as I mentioned 9 2.9 coverage grade um for him um and I think let's see so ESPN had him with seven total tackles in this game and he was targeted twice allowed one catch for just three yards so yeah he was all over the place and that's what we come to know and expect from Fred Warner so I I'm definitely not mad at this one right here uh and any time that we can give Fred his flowers is a good week for me I'm just telling you it was just something like it was to me it was like just mesmerizing and it wasn't like again statistically dominating he wasn't a middle linebacker had 18 tackles in a game or did one of his typical Fred running up the middle and you know picked the quarterback off who's thinks he's got his tight end it was just God he is everywhere at aund like and it's just a trail of d behind him it's it was it was insane he's a he's a wrecker man yeah he is a wrecker always always after the ball and he had the peanut punch I we didn't even mention that but yeah that was and that was a perfect peanut punch um in a key part of the it was early in the game it it felt like it took some momentum I guess like I don't even think the CHS had any moment wind out of sales yeah no that's but that's awesome like and I think also that speaks to what we know Nick senson preaches as well it's all about the ball you got to go out and get it that was teach tape on a peanut punch right there so Gotta Give Fred his props for that one all right let's get to the obvious one right Jordan Mason I mean how how more obvious could this one be all right Jordan Mason thrust into the starting role with Christian mcaffrey out and I think everything we heard heard players say about it after the fact rank true like everyone was expecting this out of Jordan Mason because they've seen it right like they've seen it in practice I think us 49er fans were even expecting this but we'd never seen it in like a full game right so I guess we didn't know the extent of it but we we knew if he we 49 fans say a lot like Jordan Mason would be starting on 31 other teams in the NFL we got we got to see what it looked like if he was starting and I think we could safely say we were right about that right so really happy for Jordan Mason that he got that opportunity and it's not like he's he's taking Christian McCaffrey's job like no no one can do that but at the very least like he definitely earned himself more snaps in this offense I think he's going to continue to to get opportunities with the type of performance that he put up um after week one he he leads the league in Miss tackles forced according to nextg Stats that's five more than the next closest Ball Carrier his 28 carries were the most he's had since high school which is crazy and 28 uh carries by players is the most uh since Kyle Shanahan became head coach of the 49ers too which is that one's surprising because you think like khaan loves to run the football and he's had games where they've ran it 30 plus times several games right yeah and so that one was a little surprising to me but I think it just showed Jordan Mason the trust this team has in him and also game script was favorable but he dictated the game script he got rolling it's like all right right we got this and we're going to keep rolling with it and this is the crazy part won the Jets had a stacked box on I believe over 50% of his carries yep still he still was able to do 147 yards on the ground his feet don't stop moving I just I love everything about this kid and I'm I'm just so happy he got that chance and I'm so happy that you know he he was able to do it in front of National audience I know his family was there as well just really big moment for him so yeah and N almost a 100 of those yards were after contact too right so the physicality I mean you've heard the national pundit talking about it today of like they felt it was obvious watching the Jets that these guys literally did not want to tackle this guy at the end of the game that enough's enough I mean they accused players of intentionally running into the blocker so that they didn't have to tackle Jordan Mason like this is like like professional people crucifying players over this former players crucifying current players saying Jordan Mason basically took their will out of them and he did um again we we've known once been there I understand the the logic right when I mean I think they even asked Kyle like hey does this change how you use Christian I think he did everything in his power to not flat out be like what are you [ __ ] n sorry what are you what are you sorry sorry Steph what are you nuts you know what I mean because I agree with that like if Christian mcaffrey is healthy and breathing and is suited up for the game like why would I not have him on the field he's the best at what he does for a reason but wow what a nice consolation prize for an already stacked team and here's here's where I wanted to talk about this you've been seeing me look down on my phone because I just didn't want to lose this so uh just to prove that there in what I'm reading hey hey Wes Christian mcaffry is not playing WTF man that's that sucks not good man not good it's going to be a tough coming out party for the 49ers I said no it isn't but the world about to learn but the world about to learn Jordan Mason's name at 7:10 PM Eastern Standard Time the world learned Jordan Mason's name and how do I know the world because it was ESPN's largest second largest televised Monday Night Football game um with what averaging 20 and a half million viewers so let's just round up and say 21 million people were introduced to Jordan Mason last night which is crazy good for that young man yeah um absolutely happy for him happy for him because we know we've seen we we heard last year's story you know with I think I believe it was his niece right that was just like such a silent story that only like the team really knew about it and you didn't really learn about it until it got later into the season and it was like this ongoing season like just what a what a good young man who's just working his tail off and gets his opportunity and what's better in all of sports than watching somebody be prepared for an opportunity and take advantage of it that's like that's why I tune in for this story exactly right I I definitely love that for him and I love it for us as well because man it it just underlines the embarrassment of riches that the 49ers have um across the board but yeah you you feel good about that running back room for sure um even Isaac greno was out there not as involved as I thought he would be but hey like I said you got a Jordan Mason uh I don't think you really need much else if Christian mcaffry is not playing so yeah definitely happy for him he's um definitely deserving of our nomination here tonight now Weston what do you got for us next I I think I know I don't know if you you do but you do um I'm staying defensive here oh okay so you don't okay all right right I'm going with deodor Lenor um another one just talk about an embarrassment of riches right like I I know PFF had him I I looked at that and almost like scoffed you know I was like I can't ever use this as a a resource again because they had him graded low coverage and I understand right I think it was like 10 targets like seven receptions blah blah blah but this man played outside played the slot was like third on the team in tackles in this game he's just gritty he's just grimy and he gets better every game I said it I said it step loud and clear he is the best defensive back on this football team and like I stand by that like he did nothing I mean charves didn't even really get an opportunity they didn't even bother like throwing to his side of the field whatsoever but in that pass breakout Quint cenal what di what what Deo does like he's just in your hit pocket all the time like he's rarely out of position even the one catch that Wilson made on that that big drive on third down I mean he was blanketed demo blanketed him you know like Advantage tall wide receiver in that particular play kids a stud um I don't I don't really like to use this term often because I feel like it it always gets overused but he's a dog like he's just flat out like I don't know um and he just proved it again and again if I go back to that pass break up though like that that was a momentum changing play as well right especially like hey the Jets needed that drive right they needed points right there and what does your defense do you you take the ball away so I just feel like big becoming a big time player showing up in Big Time moments for the team to be rewarded here with the 49k player of the week yeah absolutely and I do hope he gets rewarded this offseason as well that would by us let's be clear on that yes yes yes yes thank you thank you for that I definitely hope the 49ers make him a rich man after this season cuz I have a feeling it's just week one right but I have a feeling he's going to be an all pro uh this year and week one was the first step right that that's the the first uh bit that we got to see of of 2024 yeah Brick by Brick week by week and so I'd say it was a pretty good week for dador Lenor and I think already he's showing why he is one of the best corners in the league much was said about the Jets DBS you know for good reason you know you got SAS Gard you got um what's the other guy Michael Carter DJ Reed 49 Legend great group yeah great group of Corners right there I think the 49ers are very much up there as well with booney Ward and Lenor and like I said Lenor is on the up and up and on the other and like it doesn't look like Mooney Ward is you know missing a step either at his older age now um Garrett Wilson obviously is a really tough cover and and you said it he got the better of him on on that one and maybe a couple of throws as well I think we expected that he was gonna get his because it's Garrett Wilson and you have one of the best quarterbacks um that has ever played the game throwing to him know we make a lot of fun about Aaron Rogers on the show and of course uh and of course his history of of games against the 49ers like yes we we're still gonna um make make fun of him for that but I mean let's be honest he's still one of the best quarterbacks and so you did see Aaron Rogers make some throws that it's like okay he could he still has those throws in him like that only he can make only some of the best quarterbacks can make and you can't defend and that one that I think the same one we're talking about that one was right where only Garrett Wilson can get it sticky as hell coverage I don't think any other quarterback even attempts that throw like in that situation U so no no fault of Lenor there um but I just wanted to point this out right because Lenor also playing inside and outside which continues to be a huge asset to the 49ers Garrett Wilson was in the slot um 12 times and I assume in all of those 12 uh Lenor was covering him and know he was split out wide 37 times 20 on the left side 17 on the right dador Lenor um was in the slot 35 times in this game and then he was on the right side 10 times so Garrett Wilson kind of split his time between left and right almost pretty evenly um and so it wasn't always Garrett Wilson and that says too like Mooney Ward also saw Garrett Wilson a number of times and I think like it this is almost inspiring me won to nominate Mooney Ward because I don't know if if you saw the the nextg stats chart of Aaron Rogers like his passing chart right he didn't throw the ball he did not he did not Target Mooney Ward like he didn't throw right once and that's that is a Mooney Ward Stat or that that says a lot about Wy Ward right there so yes I I love Leno's performance and I love Lenor but it you nominating Lenor inspired me to give some flowers here to Mooney Ward who wasn't targeted once in this game and I think that says a lot about him yeah I yeah I I mean that's all you want from your shut down corner is just take the field away like make make that side of the field an afterthought and it it clearly was but understanding that the heavy concentration was going to go to yium and wherever demo was like you mentioned it against um Garrett Wilson he was targeted six times against Garett Wilson four receptions 38 yards I'd live with that all day long against a top tier wide receiv receiver in the NFL right I mean that yeah all right I digress Theodor Lenor all right well I like I said I I gave my second nomination uh to Mooney Ward and so who is your next one now now I'm going to predict that I know who this is it has to be it has to be who I'm thinking Jake Moody how how is it not so long how is it not the um he was unbeliev listen another question mark right like he had moments last year he wasn't the epitome of consistency especially in the playoffs and you know what do you go six he made he went six for six with a long of 53 that's insane insane um I think he had three over 50 right I think he had like a 51 a 52 and a 5 if I'm not mistake or or maybe I'm trying to remember exactly what the the breakdown was but six of six difficult field goals Monday Night opening week you know are those those Jitters there I mean George KD joked about it after the game but his Michigan team did get spanked by Northern Illinois right these guys they carry heavy hearts and he went out there and he totally redeemed himself um and said that kick this is a big week for a couple kickers by the way if you're a fantasy football player player by any means couple ones but this was incredible I and and you saw it from every distance and none of it was hairy none of it was really like shaky oh well you did have the one he hit the post and went back in but um all right by then he was like he was already on a he yeah it does even matter yeah Jake Moody man Jake Moody um definitely a great performance from him so yes I was expecting you to mention his name a lot earlier because I know any chance you get to nominate him for 49k player of the week you do it and somebody has to validate the third round pick and I've made it my mission even though I don't agree with it and I would never picked the kicker in the third round I'm bearing that cross for us St all right and this time I do agree with you I mean six six for six he accounted for 20 points of this 32o outing for the 49ers like that's that's nothing small man and also he won me one of my fantasy matchups that I thought I was like done with you know like I I checked when he was five for five because I was like no that like at one point I didn't even think there was any chance I was going to win this matchup and then I I realized he's five for five and I'm like wait I have moody in a league let me go check if if I actually was able to or actually let's see second did he win me two matchups no it just the one but um yeah still still big so he has a a place in my heart now uh for for winning me that week one matchup appreciate it buddy and yeah Jake Moody man I I don't know if I want more performances like that right because it means the 49ers aren't punching some in uh but it it's great to know that he showed a lot of confidence yesterday in the 49ers of course continue to show confidence in him so great for I think to your point that like opening the show right is yeah we put up 32 points but imagine what that would look like if three of those six drives didn't stall out and led to touchdowns right and that's what you expect to see as the season gets deeper is converting on those third downs I'm a little I'm a little shocked not shocked disappointed that did not go for that one fourth down like when it was just going to end up being a 20 because you made a two possession game A two Poss easy conversion yeah like the way you're running the football right now like just line up and even if you don't get it okay you're still up 13 points so it's still two possessions the long way right still two touchdowns and for one of those they're going to have to go the length of the field right to me I just felt like we give them a lot of a lot of crap for like not being aggressive in those moments moment and that was like an easy one for him to take to turn around be like I go for it on fourth down what are you guys what are you Knuckleheads talking about you know my my only thought as to why he didn't go for it because I agree I think it was an easy one Jordan Mason was averaging four was it four and a half or five and a half yards per carry um so that was easy money right there to just gain a yard I think it it was the solid thing like okay man like we already beat you like out of respect I'm just I'm not gonna I'm not gonna rub it in all right I'm just gonna kick the field goal uh because yeah otherwise I think it would have been so easy to do that and maybe any other team he would have but but I want him to like learn that you know what I mean learn like dude in this league I I know you want to be buddy buddy you got to stop on some people's throats because they'll do it to you they'll do it to you whether you want to believe it or not which K Shanahan is the same coach who says that he will not take players out too early of a regular season game even when they are blowing out the other team because he knows that anything could happen and a team can come right back you know how you avoid that you go for it on fourth down you you try to get the as many points as you can um and so I yeah it's a little contradictory in in my opinion um but you know he he listens to Analytics here and there so maybe I got to imagine analytics were telling him to go for that one though so again I I got to imagine it was the out of respect for salid thing so I I'll I'll take that as an acceptable answer that might be the only acceptable answer right we'll revisit it next time uh they're facing a fourth in one uh well into enemy territory but won do you have any other nominees to make because I well I could make more but I have like I could let's be very honest with ourselves here Steph this is a win the wins are the easy ones we talked about this all the time right the losses are the ones that we struggle finding the the Silver Lining I think I'll say that I definitely have some like flowers and Kudos that I want to give and it's to groups of people not necessarily or just an acknowledgement but it was a really good football game for the San Francisco 49ers you come out and we saw this against Pittsburgh last year in week one just a team that looked humming yeah and they had all the weapons but we talked about it yeah yeah Trent Williams played 60 plus snaps who hasn't even practiced right like self- admittedly he's like I have to get in football shape I'm not in you had to go get an IV right like I mean I mean not uncommon for offensive lineman and especially this time of the year when it's a little hotter Brandon auk I mean really wasn't even part of the game plan right like and we didn't even get into to that like what is what is that open up I mean this this game was literally about Jordan Mason Debo Samuel Jawan Jennings right like that was the the offense everybody else was kind of just an afterthought and they were fortunate enough to impose their will running the ball but I feel like you get Trent back in the football shape right auk a little bit more motivated now that he's the $30 million man and understands that hey we don't care if you drop that ball in the back of the end zone when you're only making 12 million a year but if you're making 30 million a year dude you better you better catch it and I better see the best touchdown Sally I've ever seen after the fact like those are the expectations but um it's hard it's hard to temper the excitement based on what my expectations were for that game and what I saw yeah no that's fair so we'll we'll keep it at the the number of guys we have which I think is a very healthy number uh Five Guys that we are nominating for 49k player of the week this week let me just set that up put it up on the screen and we will get to voting as always make sure you guys vote in the live chat in the meantime Weston and I will put some guys on well no before we put guys on notice let's give some guys some flowers right some honorable mentions as we do um because yes a a win there's always a little bit more than you know the guys that we nominate that did well I want to make sure those guys get flowers so won I'm gonna start off with Dominic puny um I think he definitely deserves flowers in this game his first NFL start I know the leadup to this has been great for puny I think we've come to expect that he was going to look good in this game but even I mean we know that expectations don't always um fall in our favor this time it looks very much like it has like puny looks like an absolute steal and I know he was a third round pick but even still like there are guys who were picked in the first round that did not look half as good as Dominic puny has looked and looked in week one and mind you he was going up against former 49ers um Javon kinla he had a few snaps against Quinn Williams and he held up really freaking well man uh one pressure one hurry allowed in his I believe it was 37 pass blocking snaps excuse me 36 so puny had a hell of a game against a really tough Jets defense and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does for the 49ers this season I think it's going to really help solidify the right side of that line this might actually mean the 49ers could run to the right you know uh so yeah definitely got to give that man puny some flowers it's funny because I remember during the game yes yes yes and yes to Dominic puny by the way he's just his Arrow just continues to point up I bet literally the epitome of getting better every single time we see him which bodess very well for us um but I remember watching this game in early I didn't even look at the stats I wish I wish I did and maybe you have step but I feel like they were running the ball lot to the right and I felt like and it was hard to tell because they kept whether it was Jordan Mason or Debo back there if you notice they kept um offsetting them right so he would they were kind of lined up like in between like guard tackle and that was just it's all it's all spacing it's all creating Lanes it's all you know leading Defenders into your blocking versus your blocking having to go get them it's it's cat and mouse basically but I I feel like Dominic puny adds adds that element where you know last year it was a mix of berford Feliciano like all these different people and then we would you know destroy col and mckivitz but sometimes when you have a good player right next to you it helps you up your play too because you're only then worried about your responsibility your guy versus everything else and what I love about Dominic puny is there are multiple examples go watch baldi's breakdowns right or go watch um you know Brad's right I thought I think he does a great job of breaking down what these offensive linemen do um and obviously he's super high on puny but multiple examples where he's already engaged in a block and there's just a Defender that's trying to like sniff past him and he's just arm out right like it's just like has this mentality of like have you ever seen the movie unnecessary roughness stuff no I not okay you need to first of all you will love this movie it's an old school football movie it's fantastic Kathy irelands and it's great it's a great sin bad it's it's unbelievable um it's comedy it is a comedy just so but there's a scene in it Jason bait's in it it's great um where one of the offensive lineman like gives a pound to the quarterback and he says Mr Blake they will not touch you and like that's like this mentality I feel like puny has like they won't touch you dude like I am gonna do everything in my power and if you're 22 years old 23 years old playing with that mentality a week into your professional career my goodness what are you going to look like when you get even more confidence yeah absolutely so Dominic puny definitely deserving of some flowers do you have anyone else that you'd like to to give a couple flowers to I was gonna say the whole offensive line and I know that's a cop out pun was a huge part of that but for what I expected in week one with Trent being gone all Camp Banks barely participating in Camp right the only glimmer of hope was puny right brandle steady you know mckivitz you just know what he is but I thought they actually played a heck of a game um Brock had a lot of time back there he when you can see that he's a real student of the game when he especially when he has that time because he's not panicking he's just sitting there and he's like I know one of my reads will will come open I don't even have to like move around here and I just thought they played a they exceeded my expectations everybody I mean even when Banks went out and berford bumped back in I mean he was leveling dudes you know that's probably the better spot for berford being that swing guard or that subg guard or you need to give somebody a spill like the kid's plenty capable but hasn't been able to put together a full game yet in like my opinion but I thought the offensive line collectively played played really well um I'll include KD and use in that conversation because obviously they're an intrical part about um you know in the blocking game for for the Run game but yeah thought they played well if I had to pick a player I'd go defense again I say Malik Collins just because what a I would say Javon harra has underwhelmed in terms of being a stalworth against the Run we know he's a good pass rusher up the middle but I had better expect I saw him perform better for Philadelphia and stopping the Run uh but Malik Williams looks like that guy that we haven't had candidly since like DJ Jones a guy who's just an animal in the middle eats up double teams can still fight through it um we saw it on display in the final preseason game and we saw it on on display again here um nice piece a really nice piece for what a seventh round pick sixth round pick seventh round pick they traded for him yeah I believe it was a seventh yeah yep God that's good math that's and he looks business he he looks great man he he really does um so far the early Returns on on the new guys for this team have have been pretty positive um also if I may I I thought Eric saber looked great as well um blocking and I love that I I love that he already looks like a really strong piece that K shanan is going to use to impose uh further impose their will especially in the Run game and as you were talking Weston I did look it up the 49ers run direction tendency uh So based on week one 6 4% of runs to the right 35 to the left that is definitely uh a difference than what we've seen in the past in fact I'm going to just really quickly look up what it was for the 49ers in 2023 so in 2023 it was 58% to the left and 41% to the right literally the least in the league they they ran it to the right the least out of any team in the league last season and in week one they were among the top running it to the right so that tells you they have some confidence in in what puny has shown so far that has to the kid yeah one that has to do with one player one player only and I feel good about that and it's no coincidence again if you looked at the numbers I guarantee my eyes are right here they didn't really run the ball out outside all that much right maybe a Jet Sweep here there everything was between the tackles right like and okay we feel really good about 77 and we feel really good about 65 and 71 right so like let's just right off their rears right like start start skinny and then break it out when you get to to the second level and that's what you saw a lot of now I did notice some gimmicks uh typical Kyle Shanahan stuff when they were running right um a lot of it was counters and traps where you're having you know Banks more often than not is pulling around or whether it was sber or KD you know going in motion like they're going across the field in One Direction and at the snap they bolting right here leaving that defensive end unblocked and that's their guy right that's who they're going to pick up to clear out so it was a little gimmicky to the right but I couldn't help while watching the game like like we used to be allergic to running the ball like to the right you know and I'm like this is am I like something wrong with me like am I eyes lying to me like God we and there you go right what' you say 6 64% of the time right I mean that's twoth thirds of your running plays went off your rookie Ray guard right yeah good stuff for the 49ers I'm really excited about the offensive line this year something I never thought I'd say like I said or like how you said I think that has to do with one player that we're all really excited about that is Dominic puny um before we get our votes in for 49k player of the week want to remind everyone to continue to vote in the live chat really appreciate all of you but I have a player I want to put on notice Weston I don't know if you do as well and it's not like a it's not like my normal on notice right it's more so a I I don't know I'm just going to say who the player is for me on notice this week it's B auk and I think it's just the on notice hey man I think you know what's what was going to happen if you didn't perform to the standard of a a top five wide receiver in this game or this season in general and that did happen yesterday right he was Rusty think we all saw I think his conditioning obviously wasn't ready up to par for for the regular season and I think it's because obviously he didn't he didn't participate in training camp Al I mean Trent Williams dealt with the same thing right but Trent Williams didn't um allow any pressures in this game Brandon auk Had A Drop In The End Zone on a perfectly placed Brock pie ball that might add and so yeah the the fan reaction was one that you would expect um of that and it's not going to go away until you play like the wide receiver you were paid to be so that's just kind of like my I guess a warning of just like what what to expect from fans and I'm not saying it's right or wrong I I'm just saying that I wasn't surprised at all by the the fan reaction right um I I don't kick people when they're down but just he's not down he's 70 something million dollars up right definely not down I'm down bad but he's not yeah he's not losing sleep over a game but I didn't have a player but I I like this this this talk line because yeah like you you know hey we're putting you on notice because I don't know if you noticed but we dealt with all of your nonsense all off seon and that's all we talked about and you got what you wanted out of this now we want what we want and I think it's a fair expectation you know from the fans like you like yeah ex you see did I I I don't watch this during Monday Night Football even when my team's not playing um but the uh Payton Eli when they they do it on like yes 2 or whatever did you see Payton's reaction about when when he dropped the ball and belich was on there I I I think that's the standard now right and that's going to be the standard reaction like hey dude you make a lot of money all eyes are on you guess what the scrutiny never goes away there is a threshold when you are compensated above a threshold for your position the expectations become insane that is not saying they're right but that's what you are paid to do and it will never go away because the minute you have a bad game it's we pay this bumb $30 million a year that's the life the life of a fan versus the life um of a player but yeah the notice is is simple for me too for for auk is like better have a good week of practice homie it's that simple a lot of a lot of catching up to do uh for Brandon luk that's for sure but I have no doubt he's he's going to get there conspiracy theory for you step if you're down all right I'm putting my hat on do you think Kyle strategically left him out of the majority of the game plan to prove his own Point knowing how arrogant our head coach and I love his arrogance mind you I'm not this is not a flaw it's a compliment for him from me but do you think that's a possibility I don't I don't um I I like your your tinf foil hat moment I respect it it's one I respect but no I I don't think so and I only say that because when I saw Brandon iuk in this like he he did look pretty winded out there a play would finish and this dude was walking to the to the Huddle you know sometimes you do the light jog back he was trying to conserve every bit of energy he had uh for his plays in this game and we saw quite a bit of uh Chris Conley out there so I think it was genuine that Brandon iuk was tired and and not up to conditioning standards and and I don't think it it was purposeful for K Shanah hend trying to make a point but hey I I respect uh I respect the the story there listen let's not put that past Kyle though right let's not act like he's above all that he's Petty we know he's Petty all right well Weston let's get our votes for 49k player of the weekend who are you voting for tonight uh no slight on any of the players that I nominated but there's really only one correct answer to this and it's Jordan Mason I say Jordan Mason as well and again I know Moody put up 20 points for this team like that's that's not nothing right um I think had it been any other week we'd probably be saying moody right now but I think Jordan Mason just had the type of performance that is definitely deserving of 49k player of the week like I said being thrown into the starting role he's never started um a game in his life or sorry not in his life well you know NFL game NFL game is is what I mean so I think this was huge for him he definitely delivered he did what we all expected him to do and like we said earlier really happy for him so 49k player of the week goes to Jordan Mason for week one exciting riveting stuff Weston so happy we're talking about a win today again Victory Tuesday 49ers play on a short week Sunday against the Vikings Weston and I will be back on Monday a regular day
