zone down for a touch back the trojans have got a guy at quarterback that is a true leader we fighting this week as you and i prepared for this game finding out that he called a players only meeting without any of the coaches just to get this team focused and let them understand what it takes to go on the road and to win this kind of game when you have that kind of leadership you get a real chance to be able to go on the road and win this guy has that innate ability to get just enough distance from a defender to make a completion possible you don't see it from every receiver but this guy's got it [Applause] from their own 41-yard line first down and he's taken down the 37-yard line well you think about receivers coming over the middle taking shots from the safety but a runner who's still in the backfield this guy just flies all over the field here we go [Applause] third down now and they need to get it inside the 49. he goes out of bounds right around the 44-yard line [Applause] knocked out of bounds right around the 28-yard line now the offense gets ready to take their first crack at it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] throws quick to the receiver and it falls incomplete he put a little bit too much mustard on that throw and it got away from it from their own 28 yard line it's second down [Applause] [Applause] and he's level the 39-yard line i credit the quarterback on that pass he made a great read and delivered a very nice pass for the first down [Applause] he gets it out to about the 47-yard line it's second and two ball on the 47-yard line [Applause] [Music] right around the 46-yard line wilson gains around seven yards with a catch and that's good for a first down nice protection a good pass even a better catch you can't ask for much more than that and i think it was the quick throw by the quarterback that filed up the defense on that one got the corner it's a fumble picked up by the defense [Applause] and that's exactly what this defense was looking for yeah that fumble gives these guys some added life now let's see if they can capitalize off of it they're going to review this fumble and i've got to tell you i think he was down before the ball popped loose i don't know about this one brad they called it a fumble on the field and they need indisputable video evidence to overturn this call [Applause] [Music] well after seeing the replay it was apparent that his knee was down before he lost the ball yep those guys in the booth aren't perfect but they got it right this time [Applause] passes it to the middle of the field he is such a reliable target you throw it anywhere near him and this guy's gonna get his hands on it to make a catch first down 10 yards to go while on the 30-yard line moves up in the pocket fires incomplete he was looking for the tight end [Music] [Applause] the halfback picks up maybe five yards on the draw play from the 25-yard line it's third down fires quick he's got another one and he hits him hard at the 24-yard line that play was designed to pick up a first down but they didn't do it it looks like the receiver just lost track of where he was on the field stanford is looking to go up by three [Applause] kicks away and he just drilled it from long range and he's got to be happy about that kick oh no question this kid is just a solid kicker three nothing stanford nice kick plenty of distance [Applause] he's to the 20. tackle at the 27-yard line stanford's looking awfully impressive right now on defense but we are in the first quarter yeah this is about a dominant and first quarter that we have seen in a long time but let's see if they can continue to play this well throughout the rest of the ball game you never like to have to play from behind but a deficit this manageable shouldn't be in the front of their minds they just need to go out there and play good outside run there williams gains about five yards on the option play we've got a second and five ball on the 32. throws complete he's got room to work and he's tackled around the 44-yard line [Music] [Applause] he's going to try and scramble he keeps it three maybe four yards on the scramble [Applause] it's second down six yards to go ball on their own 48. hands off and not much room there as they try to work the left side [Applause] this one will fall incomplete was the intended target that'll make it fourth down and they're gonna have to point great hold by the defense they were expecting the pass play and they defended it very well [Applause] well this has really been stingy by both of these defenses and the question is can they keep this pace up though i think that's a big challenge for them to be able to continue to play like this right now the emotion of the game is favoring the two defenses but i get a feeling it's a matter of time until one of these offenses starts clicking last drive resulted in a field goal and the offense will come back out looking to do one better tackle after a decent run up the gut second and five ball on the six stanford has a three-point lead [Applause] row's complete and he's hit right away [Applause] he gets out to about the 12-yard line [Applause] the punting teams got to give their kicker some time [Applause] they get this one off and it's a beauty and he's taken down at the 46-yard line stanford's defense really came to play early in this football game well they've done a good job here early but you know eventually this offense is going to start clicking let's see if this defense can sustain this for the rest of the game and while they are behind they know they can knock things up in a heartbeat it's way too early to change your game plan [Applause] it's caught first down and he's out of bounds guys i really like what the offensive coordinator is doing here throwing it on first and second down will keep the defense guessing [Applause] first down 10 to go ball on the 36. he's on the run and down he goes around the 32-yard line caught with room to work tackle around the 11-yard line [Applause] [Music] from the 11 yard line first down and he just gets rid of it fakes the handoff defense coming he's taken down at the 10-yard line [Applause] it's third and nine ten yards to the end zone they come out in a five wide set [Applause] finds a man touchdown [Applause] [Music] he splits the uprights with the extra point a sixth play 47-yard drive and it's good for seven points so the score now 7-3 usc to kick [Music] he'll return it from the one [Music] [Applause] you never like to have to play from usc leads it 7-3 [Music] and we're ready for more football here in quarter number two [Applause] they go to the back and he's hit immediately in the backfield so it's third down now and they're gonna need about four [Music] he's hit and taken down [Music] this is the tenth play of this drive [Music] nearly intercepted terrific coverage and when you clog up passing lanes like that you can force a quarterback to make some poor decisions almost got themselves a turnover too second down 10 to go ball on the 27-yard line again with the run makes his way out to about the 15. we're at the 12th play of the drive [Applause] [Music] and he's tackled after positive yardage from the 11-yard line hit second down [Applause] now he pitches it gets to about the 11-yard line [Applause] this is the 14th play of this drive [Applause] gained six yards with a short completion it's fourth down and the offense is getting set to go for it defense stacked in tight they'll here him down around the four yard line this is the 16th play of this drive [Applause] hit second and goal ball on the two they've got their goal line sets on the field this might be a good time for play action [Applause] touchdown stanford [Applause] and a nice call by the coach there just give it to your main man anytime you're near the goal line you knew that that touchdown was going to be won or lost in the trenches trying to go up by three they'll kick the extra point and he converts the extra point stanford is ready to kick it away excellent kick and it goes into the end zone down for a touchback well this is a very competitive game just when you think one team has gained the advantage or the momentum the other team comes fighting back and it's going back and forth this is almost like a basketball game with one quarter down i really haven't seen too much separation between these two squads might be neck and neck the whole way [Applause] it out in a hurry got it complete he's out of bounds from their own 48-yard line first [Applause] he down have a chance he steps out right around the 36-yard line [Applause] [Applause] stays in bounds to make a nice catch [Applause] from the 19-yard line first down [Applause] and that one's incomplete he threw that ball so hard i don't think anybody wanted to catch it now he tries to buy some time and they got it sometimes it's just a relentless pass rush that results in a set that's what happened there it's third down and 14 yards to go now after that setback by the sack over the middle to his tailback and he's tackled right around the 12-yard line wow a long game but still not enough for the first the offense hurt themselves by digging themselves into a hole on first and second down so the defense didn't really have to put too much thought in how to defend on that third down kicks away and the field goal is good usc kick this one off [Music] sends it sailing downfield this one's going to be down in the end zone for a touchback this is the point in the game where you don't want to make any mistakes that give the other guys a reason to feel more confident going into half time [Applause] he makes it out maybe to the 26 yard line [Applause] fires that quickly incomplete boy brad this guy drops an interception what's ironic about that from going to the meetings the other day is that this guy's been telling the coaches he wants to play some wide receiver you wonder why you're not playing wide receiver because you can't catch the ball as a defensive back good open field tackle from their own 37-yard line it's first down toss left and he's tackled for a loss they need to get back to some hard nose north and south running and try not to get to the outside so much the defense just has too much speed for that [Applause] mike number mckean sets up the play action looks for the tight end but they can't hook up there's one the quarterback would like to rewind because he has a wide open receiver and he just misfires and so it's another third down upcoming here [Music] got it but he's gonna lose yards here they get a one-yard loss on that one pretty good stand there they weren't fooled at all by the offensive play called [Applause] [Applause] the defense looks like they're going to send in the cavalry on this one [Applause] tackle made at the 38-yard line you always want to go in the locker room with momentum so as we get closer to halftime i think we'll see more and more attempts to create big plays scrambling around here he goes he's at the 40. and now the ball is loose [Applause] from the 30-yard line first down quick strike to the receiver and down he goes right around the 20. [Applause] he guns it left side almost intercepted it's third down and they're about the length of the football away from the first down marker got the corner they'll give it off here tackled after a decent pickup [Applause] takes it up the middle for a nice run second and five ball on the 10-yard line and he carries the ball for a nice game [Applause] [Music] [Applause] tackle at the four yard line from the four yard line second down touchdown southern cal [Applause] [Music] he really plowed his way into the end zone there great looking touchdown once you get inside the 10 yard line this halfback is automatic [Music] and he adds the extra point [Music] the kicker looks like he's ready to kick this one off he really got a hold of that kick he's to the 20. in a game that's this close you can't afford to waste possessions he's taken down around the 23-yard line stanford's gonna use their first time out of the half here and there's two minutes remaining in the half and he is drilled at the 16. brad not only do they give up a sack here but their quarterback just got hit and hit hard if i'm an offensive coordinator especially an offensive line coach i'm getting a hold of my offensive line making sure these guys are on the same page and they've got to take more pride in taking care of their quarterback than that play right there the trojans are going to call their second timeout sanborn to punt [Applause] tackle at the 41. the trojans right now are getting the play out of their quarterback that they expected maybe even better than they expected and now as we get near halftime there's going to have to be some adjustments made on the other side of the ball well the defense has got to be happy we're getting close to halftime so they can go back to the drawing board and try to figure out a way to slow down this quarterback uh i think that more often than not you look back in the first half and you think about okay let's eliminate this this fires quickly and it's kicked off and he hits him hard at the 22-yard line not only did he demonstrate his leaping effort but he also has the hands to be able to pull the ball in great job first and ten ball on their own 22. [Applause] here's the throne it's almost picked [Music] [Applause] quick strike and he drops it from their own 22-yard line it's third down [Applause] caught and he's hit immediately three yards there on the play was a nice catch by the sophomore but it was well played by the defense to stop him for a minimal game sanborn is the punter it's away and it's a booming punt and down he goes the 33-yard line momentum swings have been fairly even and with so little separation this game can be drastically changed on just one or two plays usc is up a score fires that quickly to the tailback and he's taken down at the 40. [Applause] [Music] he heaves it deep the defender had his hands on it but it's incomplete they need about three yards to get the first down here on third down throws it in a hurry he's tackled at the 42-yard line really a nicely thrown ball and a good job by the receiver to run right under gets rid of it quickly he catches another one steps out of bounds around the 26 yard line this guy has that innate ability to get just enough distance from a defender to make a completion possible you don't see it from every receiver but this guy's got it [Applause] from the 26-yard line first down a quarterback in the gun with five receivers [Applause] pressure coming deep pass to the end zone oh he had a shot at the pitch that makes sense [Applause] usc is up seven and he stops the clock with a spike second down and goal ball on the three-yard line touchdown trojans [Applause] [Music] no need to pitch it as the quarterback's able to run it in i'll tell you what when you're a quarterback and a goal line is right there it's pretty hard to pitch the ball when you think you can get in that's a smart decision to keep it for the score he makes the p-a-t [Music] and it looks like they're ready for the kickoff he sends this one deep he's taken down at the 29. and here we go with the offense ready to get things going again he makes it out to maybe the 29-yard line and the halfback's got nowhere to go from their own 29-yard line it's second down got it and brought down immediately [Music] throwing right very stern effort there by the defense they weren't giving up anything on that series [Applause] sanborn awaits the snap he's tackled at the 40-yard line we've still got a half of football remaining usc's in front by 14. [Music] we played 30 minutes glad to have you with us on the ea sports ncaa football 14 halftime show presented by nissan innovation that excites david pollock and i here in the studio to break down everything that just happened in your game all week long when i would think about this game i thought that we were going to have a nip and tuck affair from start to finish now you look up the margin is a couple of possessions couple of scores it's a great opportunity for this team to come out in the second half and put this thing away yeah you knew it was going to be a close game and you feel fortunate to be on the right side of making some big plays and you don't necessarily know rhys if that's going to happen in the second half so you've got to take advantage of this lead make sure that you don't squander make sure you don't make mistakes in the second half but if you're looking at it right now you're going i'm pretty excited i'm up two scores and everything's going in the right direction i can only hope that nesswear and herb street will bring the same type of intensity to their call of the second half that david and i brought to the halftime show of course they always do that's it for us here in the studio time to get you back out to the guys for the second half [Music] and we welcome you back to the action here just about set for the second half nice kick plenty of distance he's to the 20. he makes it out to maybe the 20-yard line usc is continuing to play extremely tough defense this has been impressive it's just been impressive to watch them play with such an attitude almost a chip on their shoulder with the energy that they're playing with i think it's going to require that kind of effort to be able to win this game there's got to be some sense of urgency to this offense right now they don't have the luxury of wasting drives if they want to get back in the game setting up the play action passes to the back incomplete second down 10 to go ball on their own 20. [Applause] [Music] throws quickly and it's almost intercepted [Applause] third down [Applause] pulls it in and he's in the open field and they're coming after this putter he gets it away and this is a really nice punt they'll bring him down at the 46. well the guys are chomping at the bit down there waiting for the game to start back up [Music] and he's tackled around the 44-yard line [Applause] from the 44-yard line it's first down brought down at the 36th [Music] [Applause] so the halfback gets some decent yards and a first down he got seven but it looks like for a second he could have broken it for even more good call [Applause] from the 29-yard line first down [Applause] and they make the stop at the 32 when this guy gets his arms around the ball carrier i don't care who it is he's not getting away [Applause] tackled for a loss [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] third down and they need to get it to the 19. [Music] [Applause] he goes out of bounds [Applause] it's up and he nails the long field goal [Music] usc is lining up to kick this one off sends it sailing downfield he's to the 20. and he's tackled at the 28-yard line williams's play so far in this football game he's really the definition of just being a solid competitor every week yeah i mean you and i've been watching him and just every week he's impressed us and then be able to sit down and talk with him i think that's the thing that really i took away from our meeting is not just is this guy a talented player but how competitive he is ball is loose and that's exactly what this defense was looking for yeah that fumble gives these guys some added life now let's see if they can capitalize off of it [Music] well the last drive was good for three but i'm sure in this one they'll be looking to double that [Applause] on the ground and he won't get back to the line [Applause] it's second and 13. ball on the 40. and the fullback plows ahead for maybe a yard yeah there's not much room there for the ball carrier the safety did a nice job of stepping up from the secondary and made a good stop before he could get many yards throws it to the outside and down he goes at the nine this is a great pitch and catch combination and they hook up here for a big time game it's first down and they'll be looking for six points here they'll bring him down at about the nine yard line back to the line of scrimmage and that's it there was really just nowhere for the wide receiver to go after he made the catch great coverage on the play that brings up a second and goal nine yards to the goal line he's going to try and scramble and they bring him down for a sack on the play it's third and goal from the 10. they'll probably look to the air here dumps it complete to the halfback over the middle tackle made around the 11 yard line not a lot on that one nice grab there by the tailback to at least move the ball forward for some positive yards he gets it up and it's good [Applause] [Music] looks like they're ready for the kick and he got all of this one great kick this one's going to be down in the end zone for a touch back stanford's getting stomped right now they're unable to get anything going here in the third quarter well i think what they have to do at this point is they've got to get into a little bit more of a hurry up mode a little bit more urgency score and hope that the defense can come up with a stop and hope you can get the ball back and put more points up he's taken down at about the 27-yard line [Applause] hit second down eight to go ball on the 27. he makes it to the 28-yard line [Applause] [Applause] throws to the tight end and that falls incomplete and that'll make it fourth down yeah they just couldn't connect on a pass there that was a very good stand by this defense certainly they don't have the return on here he's got the corner [Applause] brought down at the 46-yard line a scoring drive the last time out for this offense and they'll huddle up for this drive [Music] [Applause] [Music] there he goes tackle at the 42. [Applause] brought down after a nice run up the middle [Applause] quick out to his receiver and he's level at the 34-yard line he made a good read here to find his teammate that's sound decision-making [Music] so it's third down and they've got about two yards to go [Music] short [Applause] the kick is up it's got the distance and it's good [Applause] [Music] everyone's all lined up and ready for the kickoff excellent kick and it goes into the end zone down for a touch back [Applause] not a lot of success for this offense on their last trip out if they're gonna make a comeback in this game it's gonna have to start now this offense has to get rolling they bring them down in the backfield [Applause] from their own 24-yard line second down [Applause] smith on the give he's tackled around the 24-yard line [Music] [Applause] incomplete broken up [Applause] the defense has everybody on the line i think they're going to come after this one it's away and it's a booming punt he makes it to the 45-yard line [Applause] so you wonder what kind of excitement we'll see this time around [Music] [Applause] and he's taken down at the 48-yard line [Applause] from their own 48-yard line second down let's go there he goes he's at the 40. makes it to the 37. they go with the option and pick up the first down yeah and that was a situation where the quarterback knew he could pick up the first down if he kept it himself that's a good decision [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here's a screen pass gets it to the back and he's tackled right around the 36 yard line [Applause] second and nine ball on the 36. [Music] they'll knock him down for a loss [Applause] [Music] [Applause] a nice looking play that time well the defense was blitzing here and again great recognition by the quarterback to find the hot receiver [Applause] so they're going to try to determine if the receiver had possession and was inbounds or not they call it a catch but the booth signaled down to the referee that they'd like to take another peek at this man as i see this play again it really looks like he made the correct call on the field after review the ruling on the field will stand he caught it the only thing left to say about this play is that was an excellent catch from the 22-yard line first down [Applause] and he tackles him hard at the 21. [Applause] that's three down and one to go usc's up by 23. [Music] back in this very pivotal fourth quarter [Applause] they'll drop in for a loss and once again they'll come to the line trying to convert on third down [Music] [Applause] quick strike tight end and that's a touchdown [Applause] you gotta give each of these guys credit for getting in sync really fighting to create that touchdown [Music] and he adds the extra point they line up to kick this one away he sends this one deep he's to the 20. tackle made at the 25. usc's defense has really been impressive especially his last couple of drives well now you start to think about how this team has played defensively and what it's done is set up their own offense with really good field position to give them a chance to be able to extend this lead and it'll be interesting to see how much fight this team has left in them this has been a brutal game [Applause] from their own 27-yard line second down [Applause] just throws this one away [Applause] he makes his way out to about the 35. [Applause] from their own 35-yard line it's first down [Applause] he's at midfield makes the catch and gets out of bounds [Applause] [Music] from the 50. first down [Music] and he hits him hard at the 42-yard line [Applause] defense looking for another sack in the second down and long situation he stopped immediately [Applause] flips it middle to the running back around the 48-yard line looks like the defense was in man coverage there fellas and that's why they stopped that screen yeah and when the secondary isn't dropping back into zone it makes it difficult to have success with that kind of screenplay everybody up close it looks like they're coming after this kick the trojans came out from the opening kick and they just imposed their will in this game just a complete effort you can look at the numbers you can see that the stats show the offense has put up the numbers the defense has done their job it's about as good as you could hope for they moved the ball very effectively on their last drive which ended with a touchdown the defense has been talking it over on the sideline trying to make some corrections let's see if they can stop them this time they just seem like they've been in the end zone time and time again there's not much negative you can say about this performance from their own 42-yard line first down usc looking to put this game away if they score here and they make the stop around the 43-yard line [Applause] and they get nice yardage on that run [Applause] they're about four yards away here on third down [Applause] he's wrapped up for the sack [Applause] he gets it away and this is a really nice punt and he's shoved out of bounds at the 26. i don't expect any once in a lifetime rallies here but that being said we could still see some exciting plays fires quickly and he's got his man he gets hit out of bounds around the 44-yard line first and ten all on the 44-yard line catches it and he's looking for more he steps out at about the 49. [Music] [Applause] he's got it with room to run [Applause] first down 10 yards to go ball on the 45-yard line straight run here and he's got nowhere to go all right quick after the receiver and he can't make the grab third down and they need to get it down to the 35. [Music] they'll bring him down to 36. and he carries the ball for a nice game [Applause] we've got a first and ten on the 29. [Music] [Applause] hauls it in as he's pushed out of bounds [Applause] this is the ninth play of this drive [Music] hand off on the counter nice run there it's second and six ball on the 11-yard line he fights forward to about the 10. [Applause] and this is the 11th play of the current drive less than three minutes in the game fires quickly touchdown [Applause] and did that play ever develop nicely well it's all about the receiver on this plate he beat his man off the line and then ran a perfect round all he had to do after that was make the catch and he hits the p-a-t [Applause] [Music] [Applause] tackle the 39-yard line well the guys are chomping at the bit down there waiting for the game to start back up [Applause] tackle made at about the 43-yard line the option can be really tough to defend at that time it was well played by the defense [Applause] second down 14 coming up here ball on the 43. five guys will be out in the pattern as they're in the shotgun [Applause] handoff and he's met in the backfield uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he fights forward to about the 43. big kick here to try to pin the offense deep in their own territory okay this punt goes over the goal line and this will be a touch back and here comes the offense again they'll try to make it two touchdowns in two possessions you know when this defense went over to the sideline based on the way they've been playing so far this defense coordinator is going to be livid he's got to get into the face he's got to challenge them he's got to get their emotions going because when you play defense it's not just about x's and o's it's about attitude and playing with a lot of confidence he is such a reliable target you throw it anywhere near him and this guy's going to get his hands on it to make a catch from their own 30-yard line it's first down tackled after a decent run up the gut smith gains about four yards on the play stanford just took their first timeout tackle around the 35-yard line the running back picks up a yard on the counter stanford's gonna have to use their second time out of the half [Music] takes it up the middle for a nice run [Applause] from their own 42-yard line first down and they hit him in the backfield you know looked to me like he should have made the pitch but he kept it instead and wound up going backwards [Applause] he gets another carry he's tackled at the 41-yard line and this one's all but wrapped up with the final score usc 40 stanford 17. for ea sports and kirk herb street this is brad nessler saying thanks for tuning in and we'll see you next time [Music] [Music] [Music] you
