Will Michigan Football Be Able To OVERCOME Their Roster Turnover?

Joey we continue on these deep Dives today we go to the national champion the reigning defending national champion with the Michigan Wolverines and and look I am I have gone back and forth a lot on this and a lot on them we have actually talked about them a lot considering in reference to how we talk about uh other teams I will just say that there are things for me that are non-negotiables for any team I think that what made a guy like Nick sa so great stay with me is that he didn't have to rebuild he just reloaded and what made him so great was the situation in the scenario that he just reloaded Jo when I look at the Michigan Wolverines whose over over under win total is eight and a half I look at these games and say yeah I think that Michigan's gonna be very competitive in that game if they might not even win it I can see them winning a lot of these games the issue that I come to with the Michigan Wolverines though is that just how much this turnover bother you this season with a whole new staff and then and look Joe we can make the argument but you got a you know your number one running back is gone you got offensive line gone and look say what you want about JJ McCarthy he's not there anymore there is a lot of turnover on this team that I just don't know that you can just put on the back burner and say well Michigan recruited really well so So you you're you're getting to my thoughts on Michigan pretty pretty effectively here I actually where the biggest talking point has been this off season where it's going to continue to be is Alex orgy and I actually don't think that that is going to be the thing that holds them back if he's not as good as he needs to be for them to be to to be competitive because last year JJ McCarthy albeit made some important throws in some games wasn't the reason why they moved the ball as successfully as they did did it was their offensive line and where I'm actually legitimately concerned I think that Alex orgy they can figure out a way for him and Donovan Edwards to be a really effective pairing and I think that the Run game is actually going to be potentially more dynamic because orgy is going to get carries that J.J McCarthy wouldn't have gotten last year they're they're going to continue to probably use him the way that they did when orgy was coming on in the field in those sub packages but the fact that they had I believe six offensive linemen invited to the NFL combine they had so many good offensive line prospects last year that the NFL wanted to see their sixth offensive lineman at the combine they had 13 draft picks and just a put this into full context here for for folks is a little bit verbose for me to do this but last draft they had JJ McCarthy Chris Jenkins Mike Sanders still Junior Coulson Blake corm Roman Wilson Zack CER AJ Barner Trevor Keegan Michael Barrett larius Henderson Jaylen Harold and Cornelius Johnson that is a lot of guys to replace I think defensively they're going to be fine but what will hold them back is probably their offensive line as we said this with Oklahoma as well as you can recruit at that position trying to replace a whole offensive line which not happening for a lot of teams this year in college football trying to replace a whole o line unit is going to cause problems and it's going to cause problems early they have to play Texas early and I wonder if that's going to be a real sobering moment for them and could be a make or break situation where if they play well it could be a galvanizing confidence point but that is going to be a tough test early for them to know if that offensive line can be up to par and could be as good uh as they needed to be for the Run game to be effective enough to lead them I fully agree with you I I just don't know if I see a scenario early like you got to play Texas like you mentioned Texas line I I mean in the interior they got they went in the portal and got excuse me four different defensive linemen you you you have a really good uhh Edge presence I mean defensively maybe they're secondary we'll have to see they were in the hundreds last year was Texas and and passing yards allowed I agree with you though that Alex zorie it comes down to that now the o line I mean and Joe to not to defend him I I mean look they're trying to figure out and get a cohesive unit up there just as much as he's learning the position and and being the the first time starter which is a tough mix which is a very tough mix so I look at them and say I do think that they've developed and coached really well but I've also seen head coaches okay in scenarios where when a head coach has taken the position over for the head coach that he was under like the look Ryan day is an example Joe I mean look after CJ Stroud what have they looked like at quarterback like we've had a lot of discussions about Ohio State at quarterback mhm position group that he coached Ryan day has started to take a little bit of a backseat in reference to like look man you went from CJ stra to who and now you have will Howard like that is the comparison that they have the offensive line though I I think is a different beast when you when you're talking about a head coach look Jo I've seen head coaches that are o line o line guys that will go through the Run game and they will develop I just think it's way too much to replace offensively and look I I when you can't do what you did a year ago and being downhilling that physical okay then you're going to have to rely with the guys on the outside and you're going to have to rely on a quarterback that can throw the football all over the place my question becomes could Alex Orie even do that now doesn't mean you can't be creative doesn't mean that you cannot do some things I Joe I just think that there's a question mark now the biggest what if would Joe is can they beat some of these teams that are on paper more talented than them and look I like Chiron Moore we talked about Chiron Moore a lot okay when when he was the head or he was being announced that he was gonna be the next head coach Joey's gonna have to learn on the job and I understand a year ago that he was the interim head coach but anybody can be an interim head coach for a team like that okay like I I I understand all that but when it comes down to nut cutting time uh he doesn't have the EXP experience of being a head coach and I got to be real with you I don't know if if like who does he lean on is it marale I mean like who on that staff gonna lean on I would say it' be marale that he would lean on has College head coaching experience so those are the the the questions that I have Joe I gotta be honest defensively I have no issues really I mean they might be they were're bringing in a defensive coordinator who's known for being extremely aggressive and he's got well take take Martell out of it take Martell out of it why would we take him out of it I think he's important for the for the conversation one second though okay take him out of the equation Joe on paper there's not a I mean when you look at their defense the talent there is unreal so even if regardless I mean you're going to be able to do so so Joe me and you could be there DC so this is why this is important as we're talking about them I for anyone who's hoping this and I'm sure that Ohio State fans are the floor will not fall out at all at Michigan it's not going to they're not going to have a a tumultuous down year it's just not going to happen for what you just said they have potentially two first round picks in Mason Graham and will Johnson and then they went and added Jon bam who's a linebacker from Maryland who is a kid who caught my eye last year a really good athlete who I think steps into that defense and if he can work on a couple of things with his instincts could be a really impactful player in that linebacking core that is starting fresh replacing Junior Coulson and Michael Barrett so what you're talking about they're gonna blow their way through the back end of their schedule the the crappy teams on their schedule they're going to blow their they're going to beat up the crappy teams on their schedule and I think that they're good enough to beat teams like USC like Washington but what it comes down to and why I think that we're caught at this N9 and3 inflection point I don't know if they can beat Texas because it's so early on in the season when you've got so many new guys that you're trying to figure out offensively Oregon is going to be a tossup and if Ohio State loses to Michigan again RNE is getting fired for first of all but I I would be absolutely stunned if at Ohio State with every everything that Ohio State's coming back they are the opposite version of what Michigan had last year where they deliberately brought back most of their important offensive and defensive linemen so that is probably going to be a loss for Michigan so I keep seeing nine and three and I think that's a really realistic thing for them to get to I don't think Michigan fans are irrational in assuming that they're going to get right back to the National Championship I have not gotten that pulse on them but nine and three I think is realistic and N9 and three could get you to the playoff I I'm not going to agree with you there I don't think any nine and three team is going to get in the playoff I'm not saying it's a lock but it you know they might be one of the first teams out kind of thing now Les push Les auson in the chat said rafino honestly do do know I mean if you're gonna send his comments you need to spell better um but says Michigan's o line dep because last year you gave a lot of hot takes and Nate Crow at the end of the season what what hot takes um Joe I'm going to disagree with you on one thing thing I I think there does come a situation where when you can't move the ball offensively defense will get worse just by just by the Numbers alone because once you get the you know what it could be can I tell you the the the way I Envision it Joe it feels like Penn State remember last year when Penn State had was really good defensively but their offenses offensive ineptitude okay was so bad that it bro the defense eventually broke are you a th% sure that you're sold on Alex orgy to move the football against any of these but this is but this is what I said earlier I I don't think Alex orgy needs to be more than average I I really don't I think that they offensive I know that they're replacing then what they're replacing a full offensive line unit which is going to be tough for them but I they don't need him to to throw the ball 25 plus times a game they did that with JJ McCarthy last year and they ran the ball really effectively Donovan Edwards is a more Dynamic explosive athlete but they got bailed out because they could Joe let's not misremember that they were in a game versus Penn State and ran the ball 30 something plus times in a row yeah they're not they're obviously not going to be able to do that but they're going to be able to run the ball effectively enough where he doesn't need to step up and make huge third down throws he's I willing to bet he's not going to be callede with that in every of in every big game that you you mean to tell me that there's not going to be a critical third down that Alex orgy is not going to have to throw the ball against obviously that there's those situations are going to arise but it's not going to be contingent on them winning they're gonna V their offensive line my point or not offensive line my point is is that their offense isn't going to completely collapse and fall apart it's going to take a step back I think it is but Joe you can't run the ball that that much and 30 times to win a game Jo there's gonna be critical you know how I Envision a game like Texas they can't run the football and Alex orgy it it's on his shoulders to get things going so yes I do think that there are Joe are you a th% sold that Texas can't walk in Ann Arbor with the front seven that we saw them produce a year ago which Joe they're bunch of those kids are gone a bunch of those kids right now if you if you the on the edge they have Anthony Hill Jr who's moving the linebacker the big guys in the middle that were important for them are gone Joe they went and got four the I think of the top six they got four the top defensive lineman in the portal I'm telling you right now when we do the Texas preview it's been a talking point that I have seen consistently a lot with Texas and in some of the pods that I've listened to from Texas folks that have said the biggest question mark on their roster is their defensive line it's not the same defensive line and so they got a bunch of average dudes compared to the Behemoth they last hold on hold on let's act if you're right then you got to apply that same exact thing to Michigan they have Mason Graham coming back they they have two them no no jo you have to apply the same thing on the offensive line it's a bigger deal what Michigan is trying to recreate along the offensive line that what Texas is doing because here's the truth Texas reloaded and recruited better at that position to reload and you came here about a month ago talking about how Alex sgy is not looking the part and there's a lot of discussion Joe there's going to be critical Parts in games you cannot run the football with this unit or we don't think that you can at the current moment with this unit that Joe we're talking about the nine win mark how do you get above that you're going to have to be able to throw the football in today's League to get over that they didn't need to do it last year and what's being brought up in the comments is the really good point what's being brought up in the comments is that their depth is better than we're giving them credit for I my only concern is that it's a whole new unit that needs to cohesively gel together that's all my concern is so you mean like Alabama did a year ago they had four five stars along their offensive line and didn't get better until they got more a more cohesive unit offensive line is not a position that you can just say Plug and Play you just provided a good example of why they could by the end of the season be in a much better Rhythm because they've got talented guys talking about and you know what they both lost to te they both play Texas and Alabama lost to him but on one sideline I had Sabin and the other one I had Chiron Moore yeah are we gonna act like the beginning of the season for Alabama it wasn't an issue it was an issue and that's why I brought up the Texas game is probably going to be a game that they lose but as I see the the rest of the schedule come down the line I could I could totally see them surprising Oregon that's what I'm trying to get at they're going to run the ball a lot better than you're giving credit for and if Alex or or were GNA be anemic you you made it seem like that if JJ McCarthy didn't have to throw the damn ball last year okay say something where I compareed them to be anemic in running the football please explain to me you you didn't say that but you made it seem like that against Tas well explain to me then how I did that what did I say I said you can't go into a game versus a defense or team like Penn State and run the ball 30 times you don't have the same offensive line and there Joe here's the thing I see I'm getting ridic killed by Michigan people in the comments you don't [ __ ] know either there's the truth because when you have a fiveman unit that's getting replaced there's not by the way you got absolutely abused in your spring game and running the football let's go talk about that too now let's not act like those things didn't happen because you're going up against one of the best defensive lines in the country like of course they're going to get their asses kicked in the spring game Joe you cannot run the ball 30 you can't L miles obviously obviously they're not going to be able to run the ball 30 times but I just don't think I said okay I just don't think game based off of you being able to run the football 30 times because your pretty preppy boy haired quarterback couldn't throw the football because he had an ankle injury all I'm trying to say is I don't think that suddenly Alex org is gonna be called on to do things that JJ McCarthy didn't do last year I I don't think anything gange every quarterback where you w to get Joe if in the games that they want to win I'm not talking about Rudy PCH that they have in week six six what I'm talking now I don't I don't know who they play in week six so okay I hope it's not Oregon okay all I all I am saying is is that he's always GNA be in those situations always are we are we are we so easily to to forget in 2022 when JJ McCarthy was out there throwing dimes in the second half what do you mean that they weren't that they didn't ask him to throw the football to win games there there were very few instances and I'm not okay you're misunderstanding what I'm saying I'm not sitting here saying Alex orgy needs to you know step up and have Heisman moments and and that J.J McCarthy wasn't asked to throw the ball but their offense was predicated off of running the football opening up the passing attack by running the football effectively there are games on their schedule yes that are going to make it hard for them to move the ball on the ground which is why I don't think that they can beat Ohio state that one's a pretty easy one for me to pick and say so then what are you disagreeing with my take on for then I'm disagreeing with you because I don't believe that you're I don't think that Alex orgy needs to to to be a a prominent important piece of this offense and needs to be the most important player on this offense I see Donovan Edwards and I see Colston Loveland and I see options for them to be the the football who gets I'm not implying that Alex orgy is just going to air mail every single pass though that's not what I'm implying all I'm saying is that he's got enough things to lean on that he doesn't need to be a 35 Plus passing attempt guy that has to put the team on his back in these game situations I think that they're going to when when they play against uh Oregon for example or if they are playing against Texas and they're they're behind and they need to get caught up I don't think that chirom Moore is the type of offensive coordinator that is going to say all right screw it we're just going to start throwing the football they have and as they've done in the past in close games they've still try to establish the run and I think eventually they can do that they have the depth and they have recruited well the cohesiveness is going to be tough to overcome but I think that their run game could get potentially more dynamic because Donovan Edwards is a better athlete than Blake corm was he's more explosive we saw what he did when he took over for Blake corm a couple years ago and what he did in the national championship game this year and on top of this Alex orgy is a far better Runner than JJ McCarthy so if they're creative and aggressive enough there could be a lot of read option that they're implementing into this offense I I think that there are going to be levels of this offense that we haven't seen before that could be potentially harder to scheme against J.J McCarthy couldn't run the ball the way that Alex orgy can and orgy can't throw it the way that McCarthy did so you're in an influx I still don't I still stand by I don't think JJ was as good of a passer as anyone wants to give him credit for I just don't mediocre okay you're talking about McCarthy versus the field I'm talking about orgy versus McCarthy I mean I am I I mean bottom line is I can't believe that you're coming in here and Joe how do you know that their offensive line that has to replace five dudes I don't okay so that's my point we're not talking about on their schedule the Rudy poo teams that they would need to play to win I agree with you running the football and defense I fine I I expect them to win those games that's not where we're talking about them here Joe last year remember in the beginning of the season they played nobodies nobodies and we never knew what we had in Michigan until the end of the season okay there could be you're GNA find out in week two what you have in this team and I think that people are vastly overlooking the very common thing in college football are just football in general Joe when you replace an entire line of scage I don't disagree with it's a okay so I don't know with every bit of the turnover that they have had that they can I I don't know I mean that you can't have that much turnover in one side of the football and say to me oh I think they're going to be okay we don't know Joe we don't know what what orgy is going to be able to do on third down we don't know what Chiron Moore with not harball over him is going to do in critical situations you know I I I I look at this and say like I've seen a lot of Michigan people saying oh we have the depth okay cool you have the depth as someone who played the position religiously Joe it's going to take halfway through the season for them to get yes yes so I look at that who are the two big teams that they play halfway through their schedule Oregon and in Ohio State later on no Texas and Oregon Texas and Oregon and I look at those two teams and I look at those two games and say to myself Joe you're not going to be able to recreate what you did a year ago I just can't see that you can recreate it no they're they're they're not going to and to reiterate what I said at the beginning 9 and three I think 9 and three is a really good season for them coming off of all of the losses that they have and this is what I was trying to paint this picture but we got lost in the argument there is not a world for me that I think that that we could as as many would hope for as many Ohio State fans would hope for that the floor falls out and Chiron Moore falls in his face I don't think that that happens at all and I think that he's a great coach and that nine and three is an easily accomplishable thing for them because they're vastly better than the middle to back end of the the quality of teams on their schedule that are not great in the Big 10 and outside of Texas which is going to be a really difficult game they're going to knock around USC they're going to knock around Washington those are easily winnable games for them because of the way that they're structured and the deficiencies of those rosters not having the bodies on their o and D lines to compete with the physicality of the teams or the physicality of of what Michigan brings to the table and I think ultimately they could maybe shock Oregon but they're probably going to lose to Oregon and Ohio state would be again sorry Michigan fans but if you beat Ohio state that would be potentially one of the the the bigger upsets in that rivalry if that happens and Ryan day will absolutely get fired I don't see that being very likely nine and three is very accomplishable and the third loss the third loss Texas Oregon Ohio state would be the three losses okay here is the here's the thing that I look at them though too at Washington at Illinois October 5th and then they have a bye and then October the 19th I don't think that that's a big deal because you have a bye in between that and but Joe there there does come A Part in that stretch with SC Minnesota and Washington that Joe I I gotta be honest I I think that people are looking at Michigan and saying to themselves okay there's not any room that they could have a hiccup in anyone of those games I will remind you Michigan fans I will remind you Harbaugh had that same situation too in the beginning of his career against teams where he had losses that he had no business or teams that he lost to that they had no business to Jo I mean I'm there was only really one season with Harbaugh where they had lost there were multiple there were multiple that he had the sh sh Patterson error they lost games that they had no business losing but Joe we're talking the 8 and a half n Win total I I mean maybe they don't slip up anywhere else but I don't think that they have the talent offensively and I think there's been way too much turnover for them to be able to beat Texas like you mentioned Ohio State in Oregon like you mentioned those are the three games so what are we what do we what are we saying about Michigan at the current moment so Joe they can beat the lower level teams in their conference but when it comes to all the other dudes they're not good enough so that I mean that's basically in a in a nutshell what we're trying to say what here okay here's where I disagree with you I don't like the phrasing of saying that they're not good enough I just think that they're too green at those position groups that they're they're going to run into walls going up against more experienced teams which that was my whole point about in the very beginning of all this saying too much turnover is going to beat them it doesn't matter how good you are defensively Joe there are times where you're going to break I mean it just is and I got to be real with you I know you're going to hate what I'm about to say God forbid they have a bad offensive performance against USC God forbid I don't think it's gonna happen who who on that defensive Line's gonna SL sure sure I don't disagree I think that they beat SC I'm not disagreeing with you but Joe what if they do get in a situation where you had a lot of tough battles in the beginning of your season where you're coming off a Texas game maybe you do have injury maybe you don't I mean but it was a tough game I I mean Joe what if Texas exposes something that LE and Riley can exploit right like what if there is something on another boundary that they can exp I I'm I'm just making scenarios at the current moment I'm just saying it's not always easy it's not going to be easy no no season is easy but I just think when that was my whole point in reference to when you had that much turn Joe you had a first round quarterback you had a running back that got drafted your tire offensive Line's gone in their leaning receivers gone I mean Joe let me ask you this question before we we move on if I came to you and said let me let me explain them all one side of the football they're replacing a firstr quarterback their entire offensive Line's gone their leading rushers gone their leading receivers gone what would you say off the top what's their depth like okay outside of the depth because they haven't recruited like everybody else has recruited they just haven't they haven't recruited they've been around a top 10 to top 15 team that's recruited if I would tell you all of those teams or all of those things excuse me what would you come in here and say about any other team I don't like doing I don't like doing this exercise because it is there are exceptions in these situations and the exception is is that the exception in the situation is that the head coach that is taking over this team is the position coach for the most important position on the roster that is being heavily replaced and he's developed and he has recruited and worked with guys that aren't the five stars but are lowend four stars three star guys and I feel pretty good about that and I also think one guy that we've completely overlooked in talking about any of this stuff Josh pre who they got from Northwestern last 10 or so minutes of the show but the my whole argument here is that the cohesion will lead to problems early on in the season but I wouldn't be surprised if Midway through we're not sitting here talking about how Michigan's o line is one of the better ones in the Big 10 I could see them being nine and three I also can see them losing a game that they're not supposed to because they're so green that's just that's where we that's the only spot that I think we disagree is that I just don't see the the scenario where they have a stupid l lo I don't think that there's a marshall situation
