Tony Cascarino QUESTIONS Whether Lee Carsley CAN IMPROVE England After Gareth Southgate's Success

uh right let's get to the papers shall we because lots of stories for us to get through and delighted to say talk sports very own um gurav is with us to do that how are you I'm very well thank you L to see you guys lovely to see you too um lots of the papers clearly dominated by what we uh heard and saw yesterday in Dublin um and there was building up to it a lot of focus on Lee carsley and the national anthem and all that HOA or what's been said about him today well as you'd imagine generally been quite a positive reaction as you say all be those caveats of kind of talking about how poor Ireland were particularly in the first half and then England not necessarily being at their best in the second half plenty of nods to Dean rice and Jack greish kind of as you say being it had to be them who scored but yeah this kind of forar over the national anthem B has been put to one side Arley Ping's kind of getting all these jibes about sitting on the wrong bench um yes all these little idiosyncrasies that he seems to have about kind of laying out the cones an hour before wearing the track suit he's come out of it a lot of analysis on him a lot of eyes on him but you have to say given all of that he's come out of it quite well bold tactics that's in the telegraph um The Observer says how comments that he's let players make all the right noises in a smooth opening audition that's Jacob steinburg there but basically just commenting that he's actually let this England sign qu find quite a good balance on his opening game we'll see what happens on Tuesday I suppose but given how tough the job he had to do an impossible task it's been called um he did quite well I think didn't he well what what did he do he played Trenton right back and he had involvement in both goals Anthony Gordon on the left was a big difference he's direct running um and you could put jack GES playing the 10 roll which obviously scored so there was lots of good things um there ding forward de driving forward yeah um look there's way bigger tests down the road um that's clear you know it's really easy for 45 minutes for England yesterday I mean there's also this comparison coming to Gareth Southgate and kind of that creativity that he seems to have brought in which I think is highlighted more because of what happened at EUR 2024 and with Southgate do you think he's actually benefiting from kind of coming in after Southgate and having such a different style because there's that stigma now around oh Southgate didn't do this and he's just basically completely I suppose part of it it's hindsight and people saying oh if only South Gate had done this and but you know playing people like Anthony Gordon Jack relish who getting a lot OFA in the as well will come on to Trent in a second but yeah how much of that is just kind of doing something completely different and being brave well I wouldn't say it's Brave um because to me it's quite simplistic with England you got loads of good players you have to organize them the right way and you can get a hell of a side out you can field a great England team that can cause even the very best and one of the biggest downfalls with GTH was that public and the view was that he didn't get the very best out of them even though they went really deep in a tournament and I totally respect that side of it but some people will look at they fell short because of how much talent they've got I suppose the only issue is is the the first and second half were so contrasting but for England and and why did they tail off again why did they not go on kick on in that second half that's what you hoped to see and I don't really still don't understand that it was given away though wasn't it by the words that Ali Carley said he wants controlled football and what you saw in the second half was controlled football with no risk and really so comfortable in a game but I still don't get that when you've got a team like in the first half with Ireland who were there for the taking why not punish them further why sit back why not try and convince the public this is going to be a different England I don't know if that's a mentality thing I just don't understand that you've hit the nail on the head because that would be the $644,000 question further down the line is when England will have to go for the jugular can they can they switch to that team because yesterday was a prime example of a team that just saw out the 90 minutes by the end of it yeah and substitutions happen so you sort of devalue some of the things that goes on but that's going to be the ultimate test because he kept using the word and the players even used it yesterday controlled football well controlled football means basically you're doing everything you want on the pitch without the opposition affecting you at all yeah that's true um what about Trent then what's been said about him today well he's come out of the papers pretty well to today Andy dun in the mirror says under a new boss Trent looks like he might just get a real chance obviously we'll see now what his role is kind of going forward but this role that he's played pick picking up on that one ball that he played through to Anthony Gordon that eventually led to Dean Rice's goal Andy D says it was a thing of wondering that no other English footballer could have played a pass like that obviously Trent had only picked up 29 International caps under Southgate which when you look at his Liverpool record and what he does there is actually a relative L small number I suppose but now moving forward with this role that he has played yesterday under carsley is that going to be a permanent role for him obviously you know part of that was dependent on Kyle Walker but looking at him that energy that he brought kind of being able to capitalize on the Midfield and the defensive qualities that he has do you prefer him there well he is an unbelievably gifted footballer we all know that the biggest test will will be when you play the biggest and the best nations in the world when you come up against venis junr and mbappe or I know he's retired now but Eden AAR that type of Winger that is going to be if if Trent loses that battle if he's not dominating the game and the other player that's up against him dominates the battle then England going have a big problem and that goes back to the defensive side of if you're benefiting it's great but if it's costing you that's another isue I mean we saw it yesterday he was able to come inside quite a fair bit and that ball came about from doing exactly that so uh but when you afforded that time that space that luxury we are going to see the greatness of him and you know he's what 25 years old something like that walk another 10 years older than him roughly again you'd like to think he's got a long future obviously with England T could Trent could have played there for another three hours yesterday too easy it was so easying say didn't break a sweat well I mean he he actually got a little bit lazy in the second half he misplaced a few passes and what but I just thought the game was so easy for him cuz he he was doing little tricks and touches and and he is a wonderful footballer I don't deny that so yeah um we are going to have to take a break um but when you return I know there's lots more for us to get through maybe we'll get to this James Madison story about can he break into back into the England team or is it all over for him that's one of the stories in the papers for us to reflect on a little
