UCLA vs Hawaii | College Football Week 1 Early Game Preview

[Music] good gracious uh Saturday night of week one we get a Prime Time CBS nonconference matchup as UCLA travels to Hawaii for a 7:30 p p.m. eastern time kickoff in Honolulu for Deshawn wat excuse me I was want to say DeShawn Watson it's DeShawn Foster it's his first game as head coach of the Bruins and their first game as a member of the Big 10 UCLA opened as an 18 and 1 Half Point favorite that number is is currently down to 13 at bet us with a total of 55 A2 all right let's do this best helmet here Parker you first then Kyle I know I've been going for classic helmets the entire time but you gota you got to go with the Warriors man you got to go with Hawaii and what it represents of watching late night on a Saturday I love it Kyle what about you like both of these I'm gonna go with UCLA but I think these are both great helmets I have always liked UCLA's gold helmets so give me the Bruins in this one it is classic there's just something about that that baby blue whatever uh with the gold on it I mean it's just oh so good so good all right Trends UCLA 7-2 against the spread in their last nine as a road favorite Hawaii is 6 and3 against the spread in their last nine as a home dog so both teams pretty good at covering in these respective roles here I'm going to start us off this one is incredibly intriguing one because of the line movement but also You've Got Talent with very little returning production in UCLA against a team with less talent but one of the most experienced teams in the country in Hawaii like I I want to know what New UCLA offensive coordinator Eric benmy can do with uh with the quarterback Ethan garbers the running back TJ Harden I'm also curious if this is when we're going to see a turnaround for Hawaii coach Timmy changen right the Warriors are number six in adjusted returning production I've got UCLA as a 13 and a half Point favorite here so you know it right around the number so when this thing opened 18 and a half I was like there's my number cannot be right but it has moved that far uh and I didn't bet it and I feel like an idiot because I should have when it was 18 and a half but I I just thought I must be missing something uh but it has moved significantly down um I would lean Hawaii I think but not strongly I mean there's obviously a reason the numbers move so much but uh but UCLA got a lot of talent just the new coaching staff Etc I think it's going to take some time Kyle talk to me about this one I mean CBS prime time spot for Hawaii experience against tent home on the island you know what are you looking for all right so I am kind of kicking myself that I didn't bet Hawaii earlier kind of like Gary was saying that was too big of a number to start with um I think Hawaii is better than some people think U obviously things happen it's summer you know I'm focusing on baseball as well and I don't want to bet anything too early you never know what can happen in the offseason in college football so I'm not crazy about betting things way ahead of time but I think I should have bet Hawaii here in this game Hawaii was minus 10 turn over margin last year uh I think Braden Shaker is underrated I mean if you look at Shaker and his numbers from last year 77.7 PFF grade 28 Big Time throws 30 drops last year so hopefully they can start catching the football a little bit better um I think the wide receivers do kind of go from a question mark to a relative strength second year of run and shoot I think that helps the offensive line quite a bit I think Hawaii moves the ball well uh throughout the course of this year the Hawaii defense Thurman the new V defensive coordinator um I think they're probably a little bit better than they were last year but kind of limited upside they're not going to be a great defense in any way um UCLA's defense lost a ton guys you guys know Lynn was fantastic he did a great job here and the defensive line lost like everybody they lost their top five guys from last year 43 sacks last year you're going to be way down this year and I think the secondary um their numbers are going to drop quite a bit because they're not going to be getting the same kind of pass Rush um on the other side for UCLA I mean what do we think of garbers I mean he's kind of taking good care of the football uh but only four big time throws last year he must not take those big chances I don't feel his ceiling is as high as most of the Big 10 quarterbacks and it feels weird to say big 10 at UCLA but I think he has some pretty good uh wide receivers to work with um UCLA kind of assists him in flux right now they lose their head coach at a talent disadvantage compared to most teams in the Big 10 they won't be in this game but uh I think benmy as an OC is a great start to try to uh get a splash from the beginning I think Hawaii uh Hawaii plus 13 still definitely my lean here in this one I think they moved the ball quite a bit uh I think Hawaii could be sneaky pretty decent against the spread this year Parker over to you lots of changes in Westwood but with Hawaii you know you've got some of the coaching staff is different uh tell me what your numbers are seeing here yeah I mean I obviously Hawaii needs to do some work they're 122nd andet EPA last year and even with some offensive potential like Kyle mentioned with the drops um it's really hard to play consistently like that in an offense where you need to get those reps you need to run the tempo and you need to to take those big shots do like the consistency bringing back quarterback and then you know both tackles uh does does really help you out and four of five starters in the secondary for Hawaii they were you know bottom 30 in EPA uh last last year on defense but I do think that you know some talent and abilities there can can really um or experience there can can help them out I'm excited see what Hawaii can kind of do in the Timmy Chang experiment saying like hey is this finally working that being said with UCLA I mean obvious motivation issues at the end of the season last year um but that defense and I'll be brief here is uh was really reliant on Lau latu last year um who who you know had a disproportionate share of their tackles really drove that defense that was excellent overall but really helped everyone around him so that loss of that first round pick is really really tough on this defense especially having to kind of reshape your whole identity top to bottom so uh I do I do like Hawaii and and the logic behind it just from the standpoint of they will score the ball UCLA doesn't have that much Firepower on offense with garbers back there um and and so I I think what you guys are saying is making a ton of sense here yeah it's going to be a very very interesting ball game
