welcome in on a Friday everybody I'm Reed cow all right Planes Trains and Automobiles and your holiday weekend plans expected to break records plus campaign Clash the day after KLA Harris and Tim Walls answered questions on national television team Trump tries to reignite the cultural battles over education this is CBS news 24/7 let's go okay he right off the top our video monitors take us to Dallas during a time of prayer and mourning after a shooting last night left one police officer dead and two others wounded CBS News correspondent Omar vranka he's live now from Police Headquarters Omar set the scene for us well right now we're at Dallas Police Headquarters let me step out of the way so you can see what's behind me uh they have their flags at half staff and there's a a police unit here and people will end up bringing flowers to pay tribute three officers shot one has passed away uh we just received word and and we Dallas Morning News is basically saying that Darren Burks a 46-year-old is the officer who was shot and killed last night two others were injured uh one is in critical other stable that's the last we heard let me set set the scene on basically what happened you mentioned last night 10:00 in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas is in South Dallas there was a call of an officer shot in a vehicle other officers respond getting to a gunfight with the suspect that leads to a chase that goes about 20 mil to a town called Lewisville just north of Dallas and that's where officers again stop the suspect and he pulls out a long gun a rifle and they shoot and killed the suspect we do not have the suspect's name and we don't know the names of the other two officers who were injured but right now Dallas Police and the community here AR shocked shocked in a nation hoping for the officers to survive still fighting for their lives Omar thank you for that update live from Dallas okay let's talk about the race to the White House vice president kamla Harris she's back in Washington today after wrapping a two-day bus tour through the state of Georgia meantime we heard this morning from the wife of VP nominee Tim Walls we're talking about Gwen walls she's a career educator herself and she headlined her first solo campaign event in Virginia there she focused on education however she also address Donald Trump's running mate Senator JD Vance listen I read that JD Vance said he was really disturbed by teachers who don't have bi ological children well really well for a long time Tim and I were teachers who struggled with infertility and we were only able to start a family because of fertility treatments so this is really personal for me and I think it is for millions of Americans we do not take kindly to Folk folks like JD Vance telling us when or how to start our [Music] [Applause] families so let me use my teacher [Applause] [Music] voice English teachers you know what these babies are for okay here's my Mr Vance how about you mind your own business meanwhile voters got to hear KLA Harris and Tim Walls defend their plans for the nation on National Television Harris defended her Evolution on policies like fracking and immigration listen no and I made that clear on the debate stage in 2020 that I would not ban fracking as vice president I did not ban fracking as president I will not ban fracking we have laws that have to be followed and enforced that address and deal with people who cross our border illegally Harris also continues messaging about wanting to strengthen the middle class but didn't really specify how she would do that there was one news makak item to report Harris says if elected she will appoint a republican to her cabinet if she wins the election now meanwhile team Trump they're on the campaign Trail as well they have stops in Pennsylvania and in Washington CBS News campaign reporter tan small joins us live now from Pennsylvania tan so let's begin here with the Harris walls interview National Television if we had a sense from Team Trump or even Donald Trump himself in reaction to that interview yeah from what I'm hearing from Trump staffers they were largely unimpressed by that interview a lot of them pointed out that there were very little headlines to come out of that set down and of course over the past couple of weeks both Trump and Vance have been very critical about uh kamla Harris being hesitant to sit down before the press or even in a gaggle setting so this did not change their minds and their minds and they're also looking to have more scrutiny from the media on uh Harris moving forward well we just heard uh Gwen walls out of Minnesota at that campaign event talk about Reproductive Rights IVF as well uh former president Donald Trump has had a lot to say about maybe even having insurance companies or the government pay for those plans but he didn't say how they would be paid for how he would make the government or insurance companies do that do we expect this to be an emerging theme there on the campaign Trail as you follow Republicans absolutely which is probably part of the reason why we he didn't necessarily give uh details on how he was going to get that covered uh but it was especially notable news because his senior advisers came out before the speech to say pay attention to Trump what he says about IVF he believed that uh it's going to make major news the reason why we're seeing Trump move to the center here is because for the past weeks both at the DNC but also on the trail from Harris and walls we've seen attacks on Trump on Reproductive Rights uh walls especially has been uh pretty targeted in his attacks on Vance and uh Donald Trump saying that they're going to take away access to reproductive care like IVF so this is Trump's way of countering that the question though moving forward is how would this play along uh Trump's base uh with uh Evangelical Republicans Christian conservatives how would they react to that how would they react to his silence on the Florida abortion ban which he'll eventually have to vote for but he has not made clear yet where he stands on that issue all right torian small thank you so much CBS News campaign reporter once again following the Trump campaign we appreciate you hey when we come back we're going to be talking to another member of our CBS team live in New Jersey of course we know you are packing to get away for the Labor Day Hol holiday we have some news you can use as you go out and experience the travel records it's going to be a huge weekend for travel we'll be right back sports fans taking a deep breath for this one a tragedy in the Sports World Columbus Blue Jackets Winger Johnny Gad and his brother Matthew they were killed while riding bicycles in New Jersey today both hit by the same car police say the driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol faces charges today adding to the tragic news G and his brother were in that area for their sister's wedding scheduled for today in Philadelphia in a statement on social media the Blue Jackets called the deaths an unimaginable tragedy listen up True Crimes podcast fans a major case that powered that podcast back in the headlines again the Maryland Supreme Court reinstated the murder conviction against odan sad convicted in 2000 of killing his high school ex-girlfriend that State's high court ordered another Court to redo a hearing that cleared saad's name two years ago he's been out of prison since 2022 there he is walking out of court Baltimore judge overturned that conviction after prosecutors found flaws in the evidence let's jump the map to New York in another high-profile court case we have new information about this one it's Donald Trump's hush money case Trump's attorneys want the feds to take up the case while why his attorneys argue Trump is entitled to a federal review in the wake of the Supreme Court's recent decision on presidential immunity now while we await the response to this request remember if the case remains in that state court Donald Trump is scheduled to be sentenced next month just weeks before the general election let's go to California now where lawmakers there cracking down on flaming hot Cheetos and twinky so here's the backstory in this lawmakers there voted to ban schools from serving the snack saying they can contain food additives linked to behavior issues in kids who have ADHD the bill is on Governor Gavin Newsome's desk for signing so far no word on whether Nome will actually sign it well millions of you across the country likely packing up and getting out for one last summer vacation this Labor Day holiday weekend at the airport the TSA expects this to be its busiest Labor Day weekend on record with most people choosing to fly out today in fact take a look at this map this shows you just the sheer volume of airplanes in the air right now this is from fly to where every one of those planes over your heads right now no matter what you're doing coast to coast and from northsouth east and west here in these United States safe traveling to all of them CBS News National correspondent roxan Saar she's live now from New York Liberty Airport New Jersey okay roxan take the temperature of Travelers today for us hi Reed well here in Newark we've met some Travelers who were in kind of grumpy moods a couple said that they couldn't get home because they miss a connecting flight and all the other flights are packed so they're trying to get on a new flight to get home another couple were relieved that they got here because they almost missed their flight this morning they didn't accommodate enough time because of the extra crowds to get through security so we're feel in a bunch of different moods here uh a lot of people are just ready to get the holiday weekend started people we spoke to are among the millions who are planning to squeeze out the last Bits Of Summer this weekend by taking to the skies the TSA is preparing to screen about 2.86 million people today alone it is the Peak Travel day for TSA during this holiday weekend the major US carriers also expect to fly a record number of passengers for United that's nearly 500,000 passengers a day this weekend a spokesperson there told us the airlines adding around 1500 flights a day to accommodate the high demand Reed roxan I talked to somebody at a ticket counter recently and they said I am part ticket counter agent and part therapist for people who are coming through stressful days do you have any news you can use for travelers who are out there taking to the friendly skies and hoping they are friendly exactly yeah everybody is hoping they're friendly well uh Travel Experts say over the next couple of days if you are flying it's better to try to get uh going in the afternoon uh because they're mostly busy the airports before 1 pm but the international hubs like JFK in New York or here in Newark are busier in the evenings now the top three busiest US airports over Labor Day weekend will be Atlanta Chicago O'Hare and Dallas for worth uh a few personal tips which many of you already know you could try to check in on the app or online and save yourself some time at the airport Reed good magazine good book maybe a bag of chips that's the way I like to do it Roxanna thank you so much safe travels to you as well well you know the airport where things are not easygoing Seattle in fact that City's airport still reeling from a Cyber attack in fact people flying on some Airlines and even international flights there seeing longer than expected wait times especially when checking bags that's why you're seeing a lot of bags piling up there listen today I had to come very early and now I'm standing in this long queue we're looking for someone to help us an agent there's supposed to be agents down here supposedly there's nothing they can do about it nothing I can do about it so I hold no grudges be patient all right well yesterday CAC had to write on whiteboards the departing flight information you see those screens there they went dark but by today they say the systems are in test phase they're trying to get them back up and running well if you're go to Pennsylvania listen up widespread flooding may be a part of your travel story this is video from the Volunteer Fire Company there this is the McClure Volunteer Fire Company and this is their reality they're walking into businesses flooded streets flooded and a lot of homeowners also flooded the storm's also forcing several of the roads to shut down which affects First Responders ability to get in and get out Jess Pennsylvania a soggy mess today it is a soggy mess today as they clean that up gearing up for a long weekend ahead and they're expecting more rain right around the corner let's start off with future cast we have a line of storms starting to build over Indiana all the way over into Ohio and back into Pennsylvania as we head into the next 24 hours starting off today alone the system is slowly building its way over Missouri bringing in some localized localized flooding and then as we continue to watch the storm track off closer to Detroit there's also some other issues just besides rain I'll get to that in a second this continues to move its way over into New York and Pennsylvania though where a severe weather outlook kind of stops right at the brim of it this stretches all the way back into Missouri a marginal risk right now a slight risk directly over the city of Detroit so we keep a close eye on travel forecast especially in that region all the way down into the Carolinas too northern southern Carolina Northern South Carolina as well as all of North Carolina is under a damaging wind threat as we head into the evening hours tonight we can also see some active weather into the overnight hours early morning hours tomorrow all the way up into Indiana stretching over into Detroit and right back down into Columbus Ohio with a large hail possible in that region too from that exact same system now as we take a look at today's travel forecast all throughout the states it's looking sunny and warm over in Denver it's nice and cool over into areas like New York however there's thunderstorm activity down in Texas close to Houston we're also seeing some thunderstorm afternoon showers build really in the city of Atlanta let's take a look at the floor map real fast as we head into the coming days as well we're still holding on tight to Triple digit weather down into the Southwest in areas like Las Vegas stretching over into Phoenix so it is going to be a Hot Weekend there for Labor Day all the way over into areas like Kansas City 70s in the forecast we still are breaking records in communities like Louisville and Cincinnati and the upper 90s today but the feels like temperature is even hotter thanks to all the relative humidity that read that's why we have pools the last on Labor Day weekend Jess thank you so much hey when we come back word of a pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas children are the reason why we'll go live to that region when we return to the Middle East now Israel and Hamas have agreed to pause fighting in Gaza to get polio vaccines to thousands of children CBS News correspondent MTS tab joins us now live he is in East Jerusalem all right so the children of Gaza they have gone through unimaginable Horrors how long will this pause last and will it be enough to get enough kids vaccinated during this time yeah good to be with you Reed well what we understand is that there will be three 3-day pauses in the fighting in Gaza in order for health workers to administer around 600 or rather administer vaccine doses to around 640,000 children across Gaza now Israel has some caveats here which is to say that areas where vaccinations are not happening could still be targeted in Israeli strikes and Israel has made it clear that this decision for these pauses does not mean a ceasefire with Hamas which the US has been uh trying to get uh both sides to agree to for many months now with incredibly intense diplomacy uh is not part of this uh whatever the case uh uh the situation in Gaza especially when it comes to the fear or the Spectre of polio is incred L rare in fact we this week reported on the story of a 10-month-old boy who was gaza's first recorded case of polio in a quarter Century he's paralyzed in the leg down and the fear is that there could be a massive outbreak of polio across the devastated Gaza Strip but Israeli officials have told us that part of the reason they came to this decision is because of fears that if there was an outbreak of polio in Gaza there would be one in Israel too affecting Israeli children as well something Israel said that they will pause the fighting despite many many months of violence for this one reason re I guess one of the questions I have you know we've talked about infrastructure taking so many hits there where this fighting is played out do hospitals even have the infrastructure the capability to store the vaccine to keep it the way it needs to be kept so it remains it remains so that it keeps its efficacy yeah that's an incredibly important question and one that health workers are asking themselves as well and to just give you a sense of the scale of Destruction in Gaza Israel has dropped around 25,000 tons of explosive material on Gaza over the last nearly 11 months of fighting that is the equivalent of two atomic bombs on an area of land which is only around 18 square miles and so you can imagine Aid agencies and Aid workers are saying that just contemplating how to roll out this vaccination plan is really perhaps going to be one of the largest mass vaccination plans in one of the most complex places on Earth to do something like that but very quickly I should add one of the concerns is the vaccine itself when it comes to the polio vaccine it requires Cold Storage you need a cold storage supply chain in order to get it from uh the areas uh where the vaccines are distributed to those who most desperately need it and so to get it to people in badly bombed out areas is going to require this cold storage chain and that is something that the UN the World Health Organization and others are saying they're going to find incredibly difficult to do read CBS News correspondent MTS tyup thank you so much for that update we wish only the best for all the children caught up in this conflict video to our monitors take us now to Ecuador families on the run from this raging Wildfire we want to show it to you so far when you see this video you're going to know why we have report three people injured they were running from the Flames this fire broke out 6 days ago it charred 10,000 acres it is not contained people are still counting the Acres damaged and so we'll continue watching this one as well we've talked about wildfires in Greece we've talked about wildfires there and elsewhere it is a theme on planet Earth now also let's look at Mother Nature's Fury in Japan that powerful storm continues to lash Southern Japan rain and strong winds to talk about there in fact three people dead as tropical storm from shanan made landfall yesterday when it hit it was a typhoon also air travel impacted in fact we understand several planes had to just get up in the sky and then put the plane right back down AB boarding their Landings because of wind gusts Ferry and rail services are also suspended and J we know rail services are so crucial to travel there in Japan it really is and as we continue to keep a close eye on the tropics not only impacting them but for back back here in the states It's relatively calm right now over in the Atlantic and it's relatively calm now closer to Hawaii where we did have some tropical storms that were a concern just this week alone we've been forecasting that but now there's some changes as we head into next week and we'll have more on the tropics in a bit let's take a look at our daytime highs though gearing up for a travel weekend the good news is is temperatures are right around average along the west coast of course a lot hotter in areas like Phoenix and Las Vegas still sitting in the triple digits and as we gear up for this weekend's forecast another hot spot it's closer to Cincinnati stretching over no Lille where relative humidity really adds to those daytime highs where they will be dealing with record-breaking numbers today sitting in the upper 90s near Louisville as well as Cincinnati 70s expected up near Boston where just earlier this week we were also talking about record-breaking heat now as we take a look behind me our heat risk map is going to show that hot spot directly over Kentucky stretching up in Indiana just along that borderline as we head into the coming days and stretching out just a little bit more Saturday is starting to look a lot more mild but still warm especially for our friends down in the South anywhere from Jacksonville down into Miami it's going to be be a warm weekend for all those Labor Day activities here's what's happening as we head into the next 6 to 10 days our temperature Outlook issued by the climate Prediction Center showing below normal conditions stretched all throughout that area so there is some good relief in sight right around the corner still staying warm down at the tip of Miami and of course off into the West Coast where daytime Highs are going to reach right back up into the triple digits even for areas close to the Bay Area over in California we'll have more on that in a bit but for now over to your re Jess this you've got to see this is video to our monitors and look at that it shows the seen in Iceland as the northern light shine while at the same time lava spews from an erupting volcano this eruption from a new fissure started last week following a series of strong earthquakes this event drawing visitors to pull out their phones and get video from all around the world amazing the color of it was really amazing and I thought that it was Inc it felt like we were being drawn in by um yeah the fire the fire it felt like we were on a trek through Lord of the Rings Lord of the Rings glad they're a little far away from where that lava flows at one point visitors did have to be evacuated from the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal Spa that is by the way and if you've traveled there you know this one of Iceland's biggest tourist attractions however we're glad to tell you it is open once again hey when we come back we're going to be talking about Mother Nature's impact on the Midwest Through The Eyes of some of our team members with CBS News we'll take you to Minnesota when we come back we've got an update on that Dallas shooting that left one police officer dead here is your headline the Dallas Morning News reporting the officer's families identify that officer killed as 46-year-old Darren Burks they say Burks is a former teacher who just completed his police officer training two other officers were injured last night following a shootout with the suspect that suspect killed by police after leading officers on quite a long Chase on roadways flags at all Dallas Municipal facilities are flown at half staff today one of the doctors facing charges in connection with the death of friend star Matthew Perry facing a judge today in a Los Angeles courtroom CBS News correspondent Adam Yamaguchi is live on the stream right now Adam do we expect a plea today uh yes we are expecting to hear a guilty plea from Dr Mark Chavez he's one of the two doctors that's been charged in connection uh with the uh fatal overdose uh that took Matthew Perry's life earli uh last year I should say now he's one of three people at this point who have reached plea deals with the doj as the doj helps to build its case against uh two of the big fish one of the other doctors as well as the drug dealer who's supplied the the very fatal dose so let me just rewind a little bit and dig into some of the details of the indictment so uh Matthew Perry's uh intermediaries reached out to Dr uh Placencia who was the the other doctor in this case Dr Placencia then reached out to Mark Chavez who again is going to be uh in court this afternoon uh to source that ketamine and so he reached out to his former Clinic as well as a wholesaler using falsified prescriptions was able to obtain that he then sold that to the other doctor who then sold the ketamine vials over to do uh to Matthew Perry's intermediaries and uh all of this told U the Dr Mar uh Mar Chavez is expected again in court and he faces a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison lot of details to chase there and we're glad you're able to spell them out for us another question I have you know you talk about the big fish in this case is that to say that there are some little fish that police could be still chasing and that there could be more people charged in this um you know no one is ruling that out at this point but it it seems as though uh the doj is confident in in its case as it stands right now uh these three um leave behind uh you know quite a bit of of Paper Trail the digital Trail I should say of text messages uh in in kind of revealing the inner workings of how all of this played out and again these three will play a critical role in helping build that case against again those two big fish Dr uh p as he's known Dr Salvador Placencia as well as Jasmine S who is accused of having run a Drug Emporium out of her North Hollywood apartment and who ultimately sold the the Fatal doses to Matthew Perry CBS News correspondent Adam Yamaguchi thank you so much for that update one guilty plea and we appreciate knowing that is yet to come today all right so to politics now Vice President KLA Harris and running mate Tim Walls they are sitting for their first joint interview that aired in Prime Time on CNN likely you saw it Harris says one of her first priorities is to strengthen the middle class however she didn't really specify how she would accomplish that CBS News political director Finn Gomez joins us now okay so Finn Labor Day sort of marks a turning point in the race to the White House can we expect to see campaign's change strategy going into the debates uh maybe not changing strategy but really focusing on the issues that they know will appear appeal to their base and also to the center so read like if you look at Labor Day on the Harris side Harris will be appearing in both uh Pennsylvania and Michigan key uh swing states that are also known as Rust Belt states where there's a big there's a lot of Union voters sort of blue collar voters and she will be appearing with President Biden in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania uh of course this will be the first time that these two will will appear uh in a joint campaign event since uh the president dropped off the ticket and she moved to the top of the ticket Donald Trump will also be hitting some key swing States next week including North Carolina uh and so what we're seeing in these final sort of just just about 60 we're at 67 days now Labor Day will be 64 days until the November 5th election it's really this last final stretch traditionally where they just hit the hit the trail running and and really focusing on the key areas that they think will best appeal to voters well Donald Trump is facing some back today from conservative over comments that he made on abortion what is that reaction that reaction is been pretty Fierce from some really key uh core constituency groups that make up Donald Trump Trump's base after his comments in an NBC interview yesterday where he spoke about uh sort of did did not back the the the six week uh excuse me the the six week posal that that that uh that um government of santis in Florida had proposed and has not has not decided on whether he would he would how he would vote on Florida's abortion ballot initiative uh some social conservatives including those representing uh anti-abortion uh rights groups like uh SBA have said have been critical of it stance be because again these are these are important voters uh Reed who need to turn out especially in some of these Battleground States we've been talking about all cycle that where you're seeing these razor thin margins uh where he needs his base turn out so um both candidates read I thought with vice president Harris's uh interview with CNN and with Donald Trump's interview with uh NBC were really appealing to the center really appealing to appealing trying to appeal to those moderate voters but at the same time you know especially on the Donald on the Republican side it seemed to irk that that crucial base that he needs Finn Gomez thank you so much on a Friday for always making us smarter taking it apart and helping us to understand thank you so did you have one more thing re can I just just one real quick I I love your Labor Day fit it's really great I really I really have to emulate it next time we meet listen I'm on your Instagram All the Time Finn Gomez I'm checking out your glasses game but this is my son's so I may get home and he may say you're you're you're trying to look a little too young dad try again Finn Gomez I'm all for I'm all for it Reed always a joy to have you and keeping me correct and yes the tie is better I agree video out of Virginia right now showing us a sec AR of Defense Lloyd Austin meeting with Ukraine's defense minister uh Shoring up us support of Ukraine's fight against Russia an important meeting it comes as Russia hit the hometown of Ukraine's president vadir zalinski following Ukraine taking that territory on the Russian side of its border with Ukraine so let's move on the map to the Midwest right now just north of Minneapolis uh where Crews work to repair damaged power lines you can see right here this is a situation that so many people are living with in these United States in fact it's just a small slice of the damage across that state here's CBS News Minnesota's Shayla Reeves right now we're about 10 miles Southeast of the city of St Paul in a community called Cottage Grove I'm going to show you what folks are waking up to here this is the west side of the city off of Highway 61 and just in one neighborhood we're seeing this tree uprooted and toppled onto the roadway it's blocking half of the road folks leaving home this morning trying to get around uh debris just like this the mayor of Cottage Grove telling us that people are urged at this time to stay off the roads on the city's West Side we want to show you a look from above stories like this playing out across the community the mayor had a chance to actually visit some of those hardest hit areas in a Facebook post he initially described seeing numerous roads flooded numerous power lines down numerous people waking up without power City staff remains in contact with XL Energy as Crews work to restore service at this hour we caught up with someone a short time ago said they've been without power now for several hours the mayor of Cottage Grove urging people to report their damage to Insurance despite the challenges though he said he has been witnessing neighbors working together helping neighbors as folks work to get cleaned up he said at moments like this events like this is when we see the best in each of us back to you CBS News in your communities where you live your lives and now let's go to Pennsylvania where sinko swallowed a truck look at that after heavy rainfall and widespread flooding the camera having to zoom in that truck is so far down in that sinkhole luckily you don't see anybody in that truck they got out got the help that they needed but this is just the power of Mother Nature we're just glad to report Jess that nobody was injured in this case lots of flooding in that region just within the past 24 hours they're cing a break right now and getting some fresh air before they gear up for more storms that are coming within the next 24 hours this next line of storms comes as we kick off the Labor Day weekend currently just over Michigan stretching all the way down into areas like Missouri it's starting to strengthen though into the overnight hours the storm will continue to bring in heavy rain potential hail in a lot of other issues too when it comes to damaging winds all throughout that region so gear up for this as we head into the coming days let's see for your weather outlook right now not only hiding that highlighting that region but North Carolina as well as as well as Northern South Carolina with a marginal risk and a slight risk directly over the city of Detroit so if you are planning on traveling there within the next 24 hours keep in mind damaging winds are possible in that region as well as a localized isolated hail storms too this can happen anywhere from Indianapolis right back down over into Illinois too so our travel forecast today well all throughout the states it's looking a little different for everyone upper 80s today in Denver we're expecting 70s in New York St Louis having a little bit of thunderstorm activity that we just mentioned and as we take a look at our floor map right below me heading into into the coming days we are expecting daytime highs to still hold on tight to the triple digits in Las Vegas stretching over into communities near Phoenix Albuquerque today in the 80s now we are still breaking some records for heat and that's closer to Cincinnati all the way over into louville that Community right there dealing with some extreme heat right now which I'll have on I'll have more coming up in just a bit but Reed it's the weekend it's the long weekend too so many people out there traveling and gearing up for what's to come yep and kids out of school they'll be so happy for that let's talk about kids out of school you see what I got in my hand my cell phone here should a cell phone be allowed in a classroom that's the issue one of our correspondents is tackling in our eye on America when we come back headlines across the country and a tragedy at that in the Sports World Columbus Blue Jackets Winger John mro and his brother Matthew killed while riding bicycles in New Jersey today both of them hit by the same car uh police say the driver ISS ected of being under the influence of alcohol faces charges only adding to that tragic news cadro and his brother were in that area for their sister's wedding scheduled for today in Philadelphia in a statement on social media the Blue Jackets called the deaths an unimaginable tragedy listen up True Crimes podcast fans a major case that powered that podcast back in headlines the Maryland Supreme Court reinstated the murder conviction against Adnan sad convicted in 2000 of killing his high school ex-girlfriend that State's high court ordered another Court to redo a hearing that cleared sayed's name two years ago he has been out of prison since 2022 there he is walking a free man right after a Baltimore judge overturned his conviction after prosecutors found flaws in the evidence well that typhoon that blasted Southern Japan now dumping massive amounts of rain on Tokyo disrupting flights across the country and causing those taxi cabs to just drive in a lot of water there in fact gusts of up to 112 mph this look at that plane wobbling there forced a lot of Pilots to just put the planes down AB boarding Landings that storm blame for several deaths dozens injured driver is in fact stranded at the foot of mountains where landslides happen uh a lot of services are paralyzed right now in the southwest part of Japan in fact some American tourists like Leah from New York can't even get a flight home I mean I'm concerned because I obviously do not want to miss our flights back to New York on September 2nd so if the power failures really continue to go on for the next couple of days we'll be stuck here a little bit longer well the storm cut power to hundreds of thousands of people and forecasters say the typhoon is weaken but it's not moving much raising the risk of more widespread damage and that's why what Jessica does is so important to warn us and get us navigated through this I appreciate it Reed now the tropics have been very active over there it has been active this week over near Hawaii too but now it's starting to calm down we're keeping a close eye on the at Atlantic though as we head into the coming weeks where we are starting to see some activity just well offshore that's going to be the big weather story probably late next week but as we take a look at temperatures all the way down in the South we're expecting 90s today near Jacksonville we talked about the heat all the way off near Cincinnati and Louisville today where they are expected to break records this afternoon in the upper 90s but the feels like temperatures even warmer due to relative humidity you add about 5 to 10 degrees just to those numbers in that region now it's a lot drier but still a lot hotter over into Las Vegas and Phoenix today in the triple digits 60s here San Francisco 70s into Los Angeles let's take a look at those hot spots especially close to Kentucky all the way up along the border in Indiana this is the big concern for our Travelers today in that region and luckily as we head into our Saturday forecast we start to see a little bit of relief the good news is taking a look at the next six to 10 days that whole area where we saw record-breaking numbers close to Philadelphia this week they're finally getting that much needed to cool down our temperature Outlook issued by the climate Prediction Center showing below normal conditions stretching from Texas all the way up to main as we head into next week [Music] Reed CBS News I in America Keeps Us rooted in stories from your communities and you know one of the hottest debates raging right now in classrooms is whether students should have access to cell phones in the palm of their hands during class well you know this is a conversation in many legislative bodies lawmakers in 12 states banned or even incentivized bans on phones in class CBS News correspondent me Oliver reports one of those States is Virginia where Republican governor Glen yunan just signed an executive order on cell phones in class set to take effect in the New Year good morning everyone each morning these middle schoolers begin their day with a lesson in Restraint I'm not worried about the notifications I'm getting and who's texting me or what's going on on social media that must be a nice break yeah definitely Jasmine and is an eighth grader at Martin Luther King Jr Middle School in Richmond they're piloting Yonder pouches to lock up cell phones and store them in a supervised backpack Jasmine armastad teaches eighth grade English when you first started this you put the phone in the pouch and you gave it back to the student yes how did that work it didn't didn't work no it it it didn't really work because they were always messing with the pouch trying to open it trying to open it trying to break in it because again they're teenagers principal Annette Dabney says removing phones from the hands of her 500 students is the only solution the engagement is up um so test scores are up which is fantastic um disruption the classes are down teachers are able to teach a recent study found that 95% of teens own a cell phone and kids can receive up to 500 notifications a day many during school hours and more than half of students spend at least 43 minutes on their phone at school roughly the same amount of time as a class period we were going to do something Virginia's Glenn yunan is the latest Governor to issue an executive order he's requiring districts to limit or ban cell phones by January 1 many are already piloting programs as a parent did you ever text any of your kids when they were in high school or did your wife I'm sure we did guilty I'm sure we did and I think this is part of meeting some of parents concerns I mean the basic concern that a pickup time has changed or a doctor's appointment has changed those are the kinds of I think very practical concerns that need to be put in place how many snaps do you typically get during the school day a million cell phones are going in the pouch at hugenot high school across town they're taking a different less restrictive approach students turn their phones in during class but can use them between periods and at lunch it feels much better because I at least I can like see my phone and if I like really need I could just go up and get it last year the school tried Yonder pouches but ran into problems and switched to this plant with input from students it just feels like almost refreshing being able to just not have a worry of like friends texting you just being able to focus on the teacher and what they're teaching Michael Massa is the principal here why not take the phones away for the entire school day give them a break to learn that is something that we have found really uh disregulated our students some people are going to look at this and say you're too soft what do you say to that I think that saying that you're soft or hard on on something is um not really helpful in education what we are is we're Mindful and we lead with love in our school and we want to make sure first and foremost that our students are prepared and equipped to learn a lesson and law everyone is learning to live with foran America me Oliver Richmond Virginia well our live feeds giving us a look at Reagan Airport in Virginia where many of you are leaving for the busy Labor Day weekend we know it's going to be busy out there so we are where you are our CBS News team's covering this story from east to west on the national map let's go this morning Millions across the country are packing Planes Trains and Automobiles getting one final destination in before summer is over and O'Hare Airport here is certainly no different take a look at the security line here at the United terminal this could be record-breaking for O'Hare with 1.4 million people expected to pass through this airport making it one of the busiest travel days in the airport's history things are looking pretty busy here at the airport right now uh TSA predicts that there's going to be more than 4,000 people screened just today compared to the last two days here at Pittsburgh International Airport and just take a look at these lines right now you can see that this line the main checkpoint line is going all the way to the parking lot well let's go ahead and add a Labor Day weekend to the list of record-breaking weekends here at DIA from August 29th until September 3rd 4445 people are expected to make their way through TSA and that's up more than 5% compared to this time last year we've just been seeing waves of people it started pretty early at about 6:30 is when we saw lots of crowds and that didn't die down until about almost 8:00 things have been so busy not only inside of the airport at arrivals but also right now there's some action going on outside because you also have the teamsters who are picketing out here outside of terminal 3 so just kind of making for a very busy morning out here in San Francisco at the airport all right that's it for us CBS News 247 we want to leave you with live cameras and we have them on our monitors all over the country you're looking at Los Angeles Seattle Atlanta and Newark record travel this Labor Day weekend just be patient be kind take a deep breath you'll get through it and when you get to your
