what [Music] [Music] Adam how's it going man yo am I am I audible can you hear me are we alive hi hear you loud and clear dude Hey listen two games are we alive still is everybody good out there I just want to check on everyone man oh my God man that was that was um thank God that's over right that was rough that was probably the would you say that's the the the roughest interm cycle we've had if you want to even call it that it's the roughest interm cycle that that we've had for sure I mean you know if you consider that we've you know it's gone sarkin right Hudson uh Mikey or or uh BJ and then Mikey you know that's kind of the modern era of interims I would say and that's I mean it was shortlived it was two games and out and it was rough and it looked real rough man so um hey good hey good ridd I'm gonna listen cheers to you brother we're really here we're really here for one reason tonight celebration man celebration I listen we he about a mon ago when all the te Leeves were pointing in the right direction and everybody was in the comments like you're jumping the gun you're jumping the gun and the next day well man was like six hours later Fab you know confirmed the rumors and I think we all thought cool in the next three four days we'll have a new manager and here we are a month later getting our man though I'll tell you what it was a long ride it was a nerve nerve-wracking Journey there for a bit but we got him and we turned the p will and uh it's a new day and it's a new era we don't really have to think much about this New Zealand friendly even though I'm sure we'll talk about it a bit we don't don't have to think much about it moving forward well also too it's just like kind of like what you just said it's hard to believe it's it was a month ago we did that emergency stream talking about uh the announcement of pettino and we've just been kind of waiting and seeing what's happened is it gonna happen why is it delayed what's the hold up and I I think I told you this off camera uh but but as far as I know the the main reason why it took so long to hire pettino was because he had to work out his buyout with Chelsea and pettino doesn't have an agent he does all his deals himself so it makes a little bit more complicated Happ to uh negotiate with the US soccer Federation and also negotiate with Chelsea try to get that worked out um that that definitely is a you know complicated process and here wanted to play this too real quick Adam I wanted to play this brief message by pettino um you know his first message after being announced it's a small clip you know but I just wanted to play this little message he had uh about him being announced as the US MNT manager let me try to find this real quick uh I think they posted it like right before the game started okay here we go all right let's see I think this is the one in English let me share this real quick present here we go hi everyone it is Macio pettino I am so excited to become the new head coach us men national team massive opportunity ahead wish all the best for the boy tonight on Cincinnati everyone that is beautiful man that is beautiful I know it's I know it's simple nothing crazy obviously he's just you know just a generic message but hey we got our guy man the new era is officially beginning the Greg Balter era is a is finally behind us it's done with it's you know that is in the rearview mirror it's pettino time um he you know I think uh Panama was it's I think it's October 12th is that is the will probably be his first game uh so that will be the most anticipated match for the usn in a long time most anticipated match you know that outside of a World Cup or cop America that there's been honestly for sure and I see my guy Zach Casey in the comments and uh yeah I agree with Zach's comment Clean Slate right and I was with I was I was with Zach like my expectations were so low will you and I were texting a bit about it it's like yeah like this game kind of is what it is right I kind of wanted to see the guys just take some internal pride and you know it wasn't going to be because of coaching right now that guys would play harder it would be because like somebody would like say something you know in the group and guys would just take a little bit more pride and I actually thought they did I mean we still look like chickens with our heads cut off and disorganized in a lot of ways and then Zach's points are a legit one right missing a lot of guys missing a lot of guys so like sure but it's also the 94th ranked team in the world like it's a bad like that New Zealand team is bad like their rank lower than new beckan and Oman and those teams we played last year you know and like so I can't overstate how bad that result is and you know when it was z00 well I was texting you I was like we're kind of I was like I feel like we're you know we could be up one or two nil but we also were kind of Lucky we're not down one nil like you know and it seemed actually like a kind of a fair result based on the game like New Zealand set back and countered and got some decent stuff on the counter you know we created an okay you know not really but we created a couple chances here and there it was a boring game that was a really boring game to watch and God just the guy I don't know there's just like a lack of in the first game it was like just a lack of effort but I think that stems from a lack of confidence and a lack of belief and a lack of and that's the thing like if you played Sports at a high level and I've coached enough teams that have seen this go different directions when you get a team that really starts believing in each other and believing in you as a coach and believing in like their system it kind of increases confidence which increases effort I know that seems weird right but they really are tied together like in a crazy way and it's not saying as as a coach you can't hold guys accountable for playing hard if they aren't as confident you can but they just are tied right and oftentimes when confidence goes down belief in the system goes down you know you you're not 100% sure what you're doing or where you're going it really bleeds into effort at times without sometimes without know knowing it or even trying right I don't think the players are trying to not play hard I really don't I don't think anybody you know on Saturday was like F this I think Canada just like took away every everything we were trying to do and just had us like in the mixer and I think guys were like oh crap and it just led to this like malaise across the team and there's no leadership internally there's no leadership from the sideline there's no there's like no leadership right and so I don't know what did you think about like that first game and the effort you know I know we talked about that but how do you think that kind of translated into this game kind of turning it around well I thought the first half wasn't too bad right just a little bit of Misfortune you know I told you I thought Pepe looked pretty good he's just cursed he can't score he's got like this this this uh just burden on his back where he just can't find the back the net in a usmnt jersey uh and he also you know he was unlucky with the with the goal being called off um you know so I I think that there's there's just a like you said there's a confidence uh deficiency right now I think that these these players really need someone in there that can kind of build them up um which kind of sucks right because last game we thought there was a there was low effort very sloppy they weren't doing very well and you know they got they lost two to one uh this game they do play really well against a lesser opponent than Canada and it didn't really it wasn't any better right they still they drew it they they had a draw so it's 1-1 um and I text you and said you you text me said New Zealand's a bad team you just said that you know a second ago as well but um this is a team that you think you're at least beating three four nil like this is a team that you should be dominating this isn't a team you should be drawing with or not being able to score uh or or giving up a fluky goal like that which you know that's our luck right to have have a deflection goal like that and and you know the what was it the 83rd minute or something like no was it the 83rd minute it was something like that I think it was like 83rd 84th minute um so it's just a lot of Misfortune I think that perfectly encapsulates the Greg Balta era where there's a lot of uh disappointment a lot of underachieving um and it it really I think um like it way down to the players as well and hopefully this is a turn uh you know a turn of the page where we can see his players believe more and I I'll get flak on this got a lot of comments too we'll probably need to hit those in a second um now Jurgen Clansman obviously have this numerous times at him a lot of people don't think very favorably of his tenure but one of the things I did admire about him is he had a lot of these guys you know a lot of these MLS guys you know that was what a lot of our starters were made up of was MLS guys playing and punching above their weight and I just think to myself what what if pettino gets these more talented players that's what we say right golden generation this is the most talented pool of players we've had what if he's able to get them to punch above their weight like J Clansman was able to do with these MLS guys then we're going to be able to beat the Spains the Germany the englands that's the teams we're going to be able to compete with um so hopefully that's what he does uh but this team just man it needs to be completely rebuilt this confidence is an all-time low um and and one thing I want to get to would love to get your feedback and even the chat is Nico Ker's uh comments earlier about that we need to lower our expectations I thought that was we'll play that clip too that is just insane man that we need to low our expectations like what the hell does he want us to do I mean what what is what does he think our expectations should be are we not all trying to win a World Cup whether we achieve it or not isn't that what everybody's goal is what the hell is the point of playing that's not your goal I don't I can't even imagine I mean I think what he's probably getting at is he's he's imagining a world where we all think we're GNA win the world cup and like we don't like maybe that's an edge opinion I don't I I've don't talk to anyone serious who says we should win the World Cup the only thing I hear out there is like quarterfinals if we get the right draw hopefully we could potentially win a win a game in the quarterfinals and get to the semis if everything broke perfect right that's what I keep hearing is like simmies would be like in perfect run like we maximize and we you know maximize the team we get a good draw kind of you know we get some luck we're have to get some luck to get there too so like I don't know like is it unrealistic to think a team that made the round of 16 with a U23 roster returns all those guys and four years later can do a little better like I don't know is that really a crazy expectation I get that it seems like that if you only put the last two years in isolation but a lot of people aren't putting that isol that isolated two years in context we hired a manager who was a pretty average manager who in the first cycle act I think you can argue got decent results right the end of it if he just leaves you probably go cool job done got some dual knats five years right even me who was a big critic of his I said I said I can't argue anymore that this cycle hasn't been a success I like that's mine I other people argue it and I don't you know it's fine but like that was my argument I was like listen at the end of the day the results are the results it wasn't perfect it wasn't done the way I want it there were a lot of guys involved that I didn't think should be involved but at the end of the day we like made it out of the group with a really young team we you know we did qualify barely but we qualified we won some trophies we elevated the program from where it was in 2017 I was there in 2017 I teered up in 2017 right and was just like distraught for for a week in terms of sports you know my sports fandom was just distraught for a week straight and I was there like to take us from there to where we were in 2022 whether you give Greg credit for it or not that's good and he was at the helm when all that happened and so thumbs up right the disaster is he was an average coach who couldn't push us beyond that and that was really clear I thought to anyone with half a brain sorry if anyone out there I offend anyone out there who did like that that rehire but like I don't know it's just like I think he's kind of reached the brink with this team like International two cycles are tough anyways for like good managers and this guy's kind of a a marginal average manager you can maybe argue above average I don't I don't see it but anyway so that's kind of it right will like of course we're not going to be good because we went into a second cycle with an average manager and you shouldn't do that ever and like it immediately started going wrong and everybody ignored it oh we got the result you got the results I mean the 90th minute or in the 83rd minute against Trinidad and Tobago playing with 10 men like what are we talking about like like like and that's what I'm saying like every stop raising your standards so what do you expect us to do we got a red card against Panama I don't know man tie the game like it happens all the time like what are we talking about I see people TI games all the time with 10 men like against an inferior opponent like so I don't know the to I wanted to Circle it back to the expectations thing which is just like people's expectations are really low right now because we look terrible but we look terrible because of a lot of mismanagement in my opinion that has bled into like poor player performance poor player effort poor player Pride like and just really gross stuff that like reflects really bad on the players and you know I want to talk about psik his leadership I want to talk about some other players but like at the end of the day I start at the top in any organ organization that fails I go to the top right and the top for me isn't even like you know the the board and all of that like it is but like it starts with the coach when it comes to just the team unit right and we haven't been well coached man well it also too I the more I look back on the Greg berhalter tenure I think the first cycle he did so well because well there's a lot a lot of context here that needs to be addressed there was a lot of teams that were down and I think that all these players that we talk about that we expect so much from uh played pretty well for through his first cycle the mckinnes the politics you know they played really well in that first cycle um and then I think when he got rehired and they kind of felt like they had this control over the soccer Federation because obviously in most situa situations with everything going against bur halter uh you know I consider a disappointing performance in the World Cup the obviously gioa uh Saga and and the claudo rea Saga and him being out of cont ra that normally would not result into being rehired but the fact that they were able to rehire him because the player influence these players probably thought they had significant pull with the Federation that they kind of were running the show that almost if bur halter was a figurehead like he was the manager but they were kind of running the show so I think that that bred more complacency from these players to where they didn't really feel like there was um you know an urgency or anybody pushing them atam there wasn't because they're running the show they're picking the coach so I think that's why the bur halter second tenure crashed and burned so hard compared to the first one just because he's just a figurehead the the players were running the show they got to do what they want you heard numerous players Tyler Adams ptic say that bur halter is the guy they can come to and talk about real life problems which you know that's okay but like it was just the tone of the way they said it like he's the guy they're grabbing a beer with and talking about their girl issues like he's not the guy who's making them better players on the pitch or or helping them off the pitch to be a better player so I think that that is a big reason of why he crashed and burned and I hope pettino does the opposite like we see him constantly challenging these players to make them better every time that they have a camp you know like that we see some some growth some some uh results um and you know it's going to be kind of hard because I think you and I agree that the Kap is still down pretty bad Mexico is not very good Canada they they overperform but we should be beating them like I don't think anybody thinks they're more talented than us I mean just being honest so I the biggest test for Pino is going to be that first friendly against a big nation a big big country right whether that's a Germany and Argentina and England you know whoever it may be that is honestly going to be his first test to me we've been winning conaf I want to see what we're doing against these big Nations that we got to take down in the World Cup yeah hey can you pull up the I think it's a second comment 9:30 God Kong snake put I he he had a comment that was kind of similar to this um which uh I like that God K sake when calling him mediocre is an insult to mediocre that's totally fair man I don't think he's mediocre but I'll just I'll just play it in the middle of the road no it's like way up at the top it's like uh the second comment should PC take responsibility yeah so this is interesting right because and I think it touches on a couple things that I wanted to talk about tonight I put a thread out there about my disappointment in pulik for his leadership not his play think he always brings it wasn't shocked he came in and scored tonight dude plays you know hard plays with fire typically right you can critique some things that he does on the field for sure but like I can't critique his like you know he's got that old school love for the badge willing to put it on the line I agree with that what I critiqued was his leadership right and what I think God Kong is you know pulling up here should he take responsib should he you know have to take some responsibility and accountability for you know being one of the guys who backr right I think that's an interesting topic I'll give you guys my take a lot of people don't like my take on it um because I think they want me to like you know say yes you know fire at the Players I players have really weird relationships with coaches guys right like they feel I had a CO I'll give you guys an example my college basketball coach was not a good basketball coach right sorry if you're listening out there coach wood but no just wasn't n great at coaching basketball that's just a fact like didn't have practice plans didn't do scouting reports you know would roll in 15 minutes late to practice and be like all right let's do these basic drills that we all did in seventh grade right like we ran two plays you know it was like crazy but we loved him will we loved the dude had us over to his house on Sunday you know bought us pizza we watched football together like and great at connecting the human and made him a good recruiter too he got some good players CU he was able to connect with us on a human level and we really loved him and like even though we all knew right what we needed our senior year which was we needed to like go hard to the ad and be like we can't do this we've been underperforming for two years now right and it's time we just need a different voice a different leader none of us would have even considered doing that because we loved him and if you asked us do you back coach wood we' been like yes we back him right and like it's just weird there's too much personal connection to expect neutrality with players and honestly they're young like these guys are kids man like I know some of you guys are probably as young as that but like if somebody who's 40 now and has coached a bunch of 18 to 22 year olds they're just young like it's not even your fault you just don't know what you don't know and like I don't know so I don't blame them as much I don't like go ah screw you man like you back the coach like I I blame the Federation for that like what do you guys listening to 22y old players for like you know that's like my kid tells me every night they want you know a second helping of ice cream you I'm not like oh okay because you told me you want that right coach wood been fired for like coach would got fired I actually was his assistant coach the year after and he got fired the year after that for not showing up to practice but anyway yeah and he will not be listening to this guys you know what I'm saying like I don't know I just I just can't lean on the players too much like like be the be the adults in the room Federation be the adults in the room it's your call it is not the players call right when I was on like search committees uh in our athletic department we would consult the players right have them meet some candidates and take their input we never hired based on their decision ever ever ever ever and if we were GNA get rid of someone we didn't go to the players and go what do you guys think you know like no like we're making the hard call here this is not the person for the job anymore players would sometimes be sad about that disappointed angry be the adult in the room right and I just want to touch briefly on on my P ack right p man I like lit some people's Fire Man people love PC which I love to see but like all I did was critique the dude's leadership and his leadership stinks and there were a lot of people who fairly said well he he's not a leader and he's not expected to lead that's a fair argument right I think it's a personally I think it's a dumb argument he's a 20 he's almost 26 turning 26 he's the best player on our team will right he's like our Bannerman he's the poster boy for our for our organization if we were a franchise he's the face of it do you agree with all that 100 per. so like okay I get that man people put this in my comments right like Roy Keane didn't have to lead at man united Roy Keane was surrounded by literally worldclass players who were good leaders if we had that I agree psic doesn't need a lead PS is the best player on a team that has a bunch of inconsistent dudes that are leaders like some people like Wes mckenny is a leader I'm like weson mckenny is one of the most inconsistent dudes on the team like I hope we're not relying on him for leadership that's a mess Tyler Adams is a leader cool like how much is Tyler Adams played soccer in the last two years so like are we lean are we leaning on Adams to 100% be there in two years and if he's not is pul gonna say well I'm just I'm not a leader I'm not a leader I'm 28 I got a team in the world cup and I'm just not a leader guys sorry can't hold guys accountable and I heard a lot of other people say well he shouldn't be the captain I'm not saying he should be the captain if if he's not a captain that's fine but there have to be multiple layers of leadership on a team will it can't just be like Tyler Adams leads everybody else shut up like you have to have guys who are integral pieces leading holding each other accountable having tough conversations when something like Saturday happens and I hope maybe he did right maybe he went to the locker room and was lit lighting guys up that's what what I'm asking for what I saw on the field wasn't that I saw whining I saw complaining I saw like H kind of a victim mentality right and maybe that's not what's happening in the dressing room but I've never heard about Christian pic being really vocal right from anybody that we know with inside sources it's always been yeah p is kind of like to himself and it's my point is it's just time for that to change man you're 26 I I developed leadership in players as do most great coaches and I'm not a great coach but like most coaches are like having intentional development of leaders because people at 18 don't know how to lead I hate like the he's born with it no he's not man some people are born outgoing but outgoing doesn't always mean you're a good leader the some of the best leaders I had were more introverted dudes who when they did say something it carried weight and to me that's it he's not gonna be rah rah he's not gonna be saying stuff all the time but I expect him to be somebody that like one leads by example isn't like whiny complainy and two is able to like rally dudes in a game like that be like this is substandard you know like this is below our standard how you vocalize that how much you talk that's up to each different dude but so that's that's my rant that's my take um I just don't I was amazed it was a hot take to say our best player who doesn't lead much should lead more man I I just think about um our our you know previous teams right historic teams like just take the 2010 through 2014 cycle just all those players man they all had grit Adam they all had grit like imagine if you took this Talent with that team's dog and grit they had in them you know what what if ptic was like had that mentality that Landon Donovan had put it on the field be that leader man like imagine if you took those two players and combined them you know and and people like I think these players are very similar obviously ptic is definitely more talented um than than Landon Donovan especially you know the further his careers went on but it feels like ptic is I hate to use this word too too many times man but it just feels like this team is on cruise control like ptic is just he gives me Vibes of a player okay so Adam this is the case in many sports right your your Prime is probably between the age of 24 to probably 28 or 29 and then then you start probably going the down spir you're starting to decline as a player right when you hit the 30s I just want to interject this one thing CU you're spot on and usually at the in the early stage you're not quite there mentally with all your leadership stuff and in the middle of it which is 26 you start to develop some of that stuff keep keep going sorry that's just so so ptic is like ideally at the best spot he's supposed to be in mentally physically quality he's supposed to be in the prime of his career and I just feel like he just hasn't developed mentally and honestly Adam I I maybe I'm completely wrong I would love for you to interject and anybody the the chat to tell me if I'm wrong polistic gives me the Vibes of one of these players who who starts to decline as a player earlier than he should like he's kind of he's kind of stalled out in his progression as a player and I just feel like maybe it's because he started so young uh it's maybe a different circumstance see I'll disagree I'll disagree with that and here's why because I watched 75% of his games for AC Milan last year and I thought that was I was I was really blown away I knew he had it in him it's kind of how I feel about our national team right now like I know we have it in us we need the right guy in the right environment and the right conditions to bring it out right and I thought that was brought out in him at AC Milan last year I really did I thought it was like to somebody's you know point in the chat like he I think somebody said if you could find it somebody said like I feel bad for him I think it was God Kong snake he said you know a couple chat couple chats ago yeah I kind of feel bad for this is a good one I kind of feel bad for pck in other countries he wouldn't need to be a leader I agree right I agree and with AC Milan he doesn't really need to be a leader to be honest right like especially in year one he didn't need to go lead he just needed to go play and I think he doesn't have that burst that he had as a u22 in my opinion anymore and what I loved is that he was able to use his mind right and I think he has a sense for the game now a feel for positioning uh ability to connect that he didn't have early in his career that he does now combined play um a knack for like runs and being in the right spot at the right time so those are all the places I've seen him develop as a player right and when he's on AC Milan last year the fact that he doesn't lead really actually doesn't matter at all they weren't asking him to at all the problem is with our national team right like I don't I don't know if he's had to lead yet but I think if we want to think about maximizing who we are I just can tell you this like it's a coaching cliche you know if you're best players your best leader you have the best chance to be great your best players the best leader you have the best chance to be great right if your best player is an average leader you know it's just going to be me and if your best player is a bad leader or a non-leader not even a bad leader just a non-leader it's gonna be harder right it just is like you better have guys to pick him up so I'm looking around will and I'm like who's picking him up like who are we is everything just on like Tyler Adams the magical Tyler Adams like who were the leaders can we talk about that like and I chat like who are the leaders on this team Tim ree at 30 49 like well like cool but he's not going to be there it's like who are the leaders Chris Richards got the armband tonight who are the leaders like Gio like okay let's go through the guys who aren't here Gio no like Wes like he's got some fire in him like if he gets more consistent like day in day out I think he can actually be a good leader but he's just so inconsistent like Camp to Camp the dude's inconsistent like so okay maybe Wes Adams I think has good leadership traits and has done a good job being a leader who else who am I missing I I don't like when you just name all these players I I don't want to say they're timid but like it just feels like none of these guys have that grit man like nobody is capable of being a leader you look at the teams that we had you don't think Adams does no I don't think he does honestly I I don't I don't think he does I don't think that he had the grit and the the tenacity that uh Bradley had that Dempsey had I mean hell even Josie alador had grit like literally that whole team was the definition of grit all of them were they like Tim Howard had grit I mean they all had grit here and here's the problem right like this is how Team Dynamics work you can have a great freshman I saw somebody put in like you know you could see Morris being that leader right somebody could actually say I could see Chris Richards being that leader down the road right I could see another young player being that leader Gio I don't think that but like like anyone else you name that's young the way that teams work is it's really hard for a 22y old to lead 27 year olds it just is it's really hard to be like hey this 22y old's our leader guys buck up like they have to be so freaking Dynamic like you know psick was actually good enough at 22 right he could have led a team of older guys in our national team environment there so I I would take everybody out who's 23 and under right so now we're literally just looking at like that older generation Jedi d uh uh trying to think of the other center backs at that age I just don't think there's another Center back who's going to lead unless we bring Brooks in or something yeah so then it becomes Adams Wes you know mo is 21 right 22 so he's 22 so pul ack right arenson I guess is probably around that age now like the list is just small man like and to say like when you look at that and you really think about the 26 World Cup and you're like yeah the Vets are going to be those guys I just named those are the vets there's no 32-year-old walking through the door really like maybe somebody crazy but like so like we need that group to lead forget just pull us like we need that group to be our leaders and PCH let's let's think about PCH now right poch's first job is who is my who's my core group of vets that's always somebody's first job who are these guys I need to get to know them I need to watch them I need to scout them I need to learn their Tendencies I need to talk to them I need to like figure out you know what each of these guys do well what they don't do well and then I need to put them in the right role and I need to coach him up on the things that I need each of them to do better on right and to me like one of the first things as a coach I would walk in the door and want to do is figure out you know like what's our leadership tra trajectory right here you know like who in this unit can lead and who do I need to like light a fire on under to do more and honestly Christian pulic would be my like day one would be challenging him in a lot of different ways and helping him figure out and giving him support in that because he's not a natural born leader I agree with that but would give him support in like what he can do what he can say the times he can lead right that's that's that's job one for poch man is like develop a core of leaders that you can lean on yeah and I like talking about it I thinking about those teams uh you had a couple guys that were in their 30s which I do think you can that that's good to have it just feels like this cycle is just building up and maybe it won't be to the 2030 uh World Cup till we like you know have these 30-year-olds who can be more of a leader um we're just building the cycle from scratch right I mean these core guys like you said are 26 or under right now um so that is an interesting point and I guess pisk might not be the age but he's got the experience he's been playing on this team since 2016 this is his eighth year with the national team uh he's the vet you know just by experience uh maybe not by age but uh we need more out of him and he should take the Reigns he should be the leader this team needs he should be Captain America which is how many times has he been he been coined that that term right um we need to see more out of him um and and look I I think a lot of people have thought this as well Adam is we'll go as far as he'll take us is he gonna put this team on his back improve the quality player he is and hold these guys accountable somebody has to do it and I I think Greg berhalter was also timid I think that a lot of this team was timid and he really wasn't holding these players accountable like he should uh for not being leaders I think pettino especially with what he's seen man we're talking about a guy who who helped develop Harry Kane we're talking about a guy who helped develop Christian Erikson uh Deli Ali obviously coach Messi he's done so many different things that that most uh fans would dream their national team coach would have on the resume right so I think having that experience is going to position him to hold polistic accountable he's going to go in there and say hey look Christian you're our best player man we need you you need to hold you you need to lead on the field you need to lead off the field and you need to make your teammates better not just by setting them up and and putting in positions but also telling them what to do but you you know I'm not saying like being like control I'm just saying like help them out you know like you think Kobe Bryant wasn't telling his teammates what to do on the court where to be where to go how to do this what to watch out for or Tom Brady or you know Messi's telling people which runs to make I mean all the greats do this it's like it's it's it goes without saying right ptic needs to do that he needs to put more on his plate and that's what's a part of that's that's uh that's the part of being the the guy right is that you have to take on these extra responsibilities and we need to see him do it man I wanna I want to touch on the Tottenham time but but first if you can bring up um Zach's comment from 10:01 pm he said I want to go back to your grit point because I I have a couple things I want to touch on with that because I think it's an interesting conversation so Zach said some of these guys have grit they just got get Exile from the team if you talk back John Brooks the players look scared to be brave out of concern of their place in the squad I think it's a legit What Zach is saying is a legit it's a theory I think right like I don't think it's fact but I think it's a legit Theory right which is like all we can do is hypothesize unless anybody out there has real inside Intel I don't all we can do is watch the team see different things hear some inside stories here and there and then kind of like build our opinions and hypothesis of how it's gone down and I agree with what Zach's saying I think that how this thing's gone down is I think guys I think John Brooks did what we're asking I think he tried to hold Greg Balter accountable I think he was yelling at guys in the locker room and I think that made Greg really uncomfortable and that that's the case with a lot of coaches and a lot of people that kind of like very direct leadership makes people makes a lot of people uncomfortable I think it makes you better right if you can build relationships with guys enough that you get past that discomfort right great T I've like never seen great or heard of great teams that didn't have like fights you know fights in the locker room fights in practice guys yelling at each other at times right like that's a part of greatness it really is like if you're not doing that you're not going to be great in my opinion if you're Kumbaya all the time like either one you're ignoring stuff right which is probably what's happening or two you're like so good nothing bad ever happens right which is just not realistic and like we've had the I think like a Kumbaya right environment that's my hypothesis it's been this kind of you know Love Fest of you know camps are a Love Fest and we're all boys and family and that's cool but like you got to give guys the tools to understand how to have accountability conversations right that's something that like I learned from a couple of my coaching mentors that I didn't know I I was never taught that as a player but like how do you actually talk to someone to hold them accountable right you can do it sternly and you might need to do that with certain guys you might need to do it a little bit less sternly with other guys and you got to kind of understand that and I think our guys have grit I think a little I agree with Zack I think a little bit of that grit has been kind of taken out of them and I the one place I would do agree with you though uh will is that like these guys have a different sort of grit than the old school guys I think the old school guys either because of coaching or because of whatever factors were definitely willing to like yell at each other when needed or like get on each other or like get Fiery with each other right I don't see that in this group playing grit like think psik has grit as a player I think Adams has grit as a player right I think and and I think like McKenna when he's on has grit as a player right I think Aronson has grit as a player I think WEA has some grit as a player I think Jedi has some grit as a player like I think we got some guys who have some traits that are gritty and I think there's something about this environment they've been in with our team that's kind of taken a little bit of that out of them and hasn't built it up in the group to be like this is what we are guys dig in on this get after each other get after other teams like like this is what we have to be to win you know we're not going to be this fancy pass through you possessed through you Ticky taka that's just not that's not who we are like sure like everybody has to possess at times I get I'm not saying never possessed but like just what's the identity right all we ever heard for bur halter was like disorganize you with the ball and I'm like really like that's usmnt's identity now we're gonna disorganize you with the ball and go to a semi-final of a World Cup like I don't know man I don't see it against I don't see it against the top nations in a quarterfinal I don't see it well well also too I want to point this out um you know maybe you could make an argument there is some grit but I think this is the more important part or point that I want to make is that and we talked about this on the last episode um this team doesn't play with a chip on their shoulder they a lot of these guys think they've arrived just because the Club they play with like like pisk playing in at Milan or when he made it to Chelsea or mcken playing for UV or WEA playing at at UV Musa playing at at Milan they made it to they've done things that other national team players have never done and it kind of makes them feel like they're in an upper ealon of of of usmnt history or player and I think that when you're playing MLS when you're playing for a mid-table team uh or a lower table team in the Premier League like Fulham what Dempsey did you have this chip on your shoulder that you have to prove your wor that you are good that you do belong and I think that that is probably more of what I mean than just grit it's the chip on your shoulder that you're proving the world wrong every time you play I don't feel like this this team is out there to prove the world wrong when they play I think they believe they've already made it like they hey who do I have to prove my worth to I play for Milan I play for juuve I play for um you know Manchester United or Manchester City you know or Arsenal who do I need to prove myself to I've made it I play for a top club when you got when you're when your central when your your defensive midfielders playing for Tonto FC or Real Salt Lake or your goalkeeper playing for Everton which Everton was a little bit more respectable during Howard's days but they were never winning the Premier League you had this this this uh this mindset that you had to prove yourself every time you were on the pitch especially when you're playing for the national team because people didn't respect the US soccer so so so here in lies the question right and I'm going to pose it to you and I want you to answer I think you might be getting there how do we get back the grittiness right like John I see John Terry's comment grittiness on the field is not leadership right I agree two separate combos talking about leadership and talking about that like grit on the field are two different things but I do think there's also like I don't know if grittiness is the right word but there's like a an accountability that great teams have that come with like a directness that our team doesn't have that's the leadership piece that I would like put into like a grittiness as well but like how do we now will because you made some good points right right like when our team was made up of a bunch of chip on the shoulder guys oh you don't think I'm good enough to play in Europe ah like you don't think you think because I'm MLS I'm gonna suck oh you think like we're all just Americans who aren't good at soccer right like that team that's like builtin chip on the shoulder you know what I'm saying it's like hard to not have a chip on the shoulder right now we have all these guys who are the opposite they've been told they're great since they're 16 they've been you know basically lined up to go to like European Academy or clubs or you know you know at 20 go over and all of them have kind of known that from a young age right it's not like surprising and it's like I know I'm a prospect right and really a lot of the guys like aren't even that good in all honesty like they're not nearly as good as they probably think they are in a lot of cases right and so but they are good they are better than our past Generations on the whole as prospects that doesn't mean they're actually better right but like certainly they're better a bunch of guys who are better at 20 now what does that actually mean when you put him on the field at 28 nothing but like that's the case and we do if you go player for player we have enough Talent certainly to get the kind of results we got a decade plus ago we do I we just do but your point is a good one which is we are missing something very key that got that group to where they got we're not going to just in my opinion I don't think the answer is let's just go bring in eight MLS guys who have it I just don't think that's the answer so like how does a coach how do how would you go about instilling this and getting this chip on the shoulder from our best players who we know we need two years from now I think some egos are going to have to be put in check I think some egos are gonna have to be hurt I think that maybe you might have to take a captain's armband away make it clear that it's up for grabs that it's not just given a pic because he is the best player uh there's one story that sticks with me it's a football uh NFL uh reference so there I'm a huge Tennessee Titans fan you can see my bucket hat behind me uh God have mercy on my soul sorry about Sunday and sorry about this year but it's it's tough it's tough uh it's really rough out here um but Taylor lean who's a very popular figure with busting with the boy very popular guy now he told a story about how in 2015 uh under a previous coaching uh regime Ken wizen Hunt he was a captain he was elected a captain for the team there's like four captains on the NFL team and he was one of them well the new coach Mike Malarkey who was a coach an assistant coach on the previous staff didn't think that he was up to par to be a captain so he called him in his offense he said Hey Taylor listen uh we appreciate what you do with your team but you know you're gonna have your captain status removed like you're not gonna be a captain on the team anymore and he said that that was a real ego check and that kind of really like shook him like he's like wow like what am I doing wrong to where he doesn't think I'm captain uh I'm not worthy of being Captain anymore and he says that's one thing that really like stuck with him for the rest of his career because he's like what did I do wrong to I wasn't living up to that standard and he said it put a chip on a shoulder because he felt like he had to prove himself all over again uh because his coach came in there or asked him to come to his office and told him hey you're not good enough to be a captain anymore you're not you do not fit the mold so I think that that's what we have to replicate on this team he's gonna have to start checking some people hurting some Egos and saying hey look you pic man you're a great player you're not Captain right now Captain's up in the air right now I I'm going to make a determination who's going to be the captain we'll play around we'll probably give the B we'll give the armband to a couple different people uh but you're not it's not a certainty that you're gonna be captain we're going to see who earns the captain armed band it needs to be earned not given and I think that you got to hold these players hey mckenny you're having a bad game you're not starting hey Tyler Adams you were hurt you had a bad game you're not playing Matt Turner you gave up how many goals you're not playing like holding these guys accountable G was Notorious for to for pinning guys in not pencil pinning guys in permanent marker hey it doesn't matter if you're bad if you're injured uh well I mean if you're injured but coming off an injury uh these guys were guaranteed to play right I think poo needs to blow it all up he needs to make every person on this team earn it I don't care if you're playing for Real Madrid and you're leading the Golden Boot race in La Liga you have to earn your spot with the national team hey pull out my guy icy's comments from 1016 there because I think it it this is like I think agreeing with you right like got to set standards leave people off the roster if we want to see grit instead of some players thinking they have confirmed spots and like I agree right and what that looks like exactly I don't nobody knows except for poch but I think like what poach is gonna come in and do is he's going to evaluate this roster and figure out very quickly right I said leadership first and then second is like where the guys stand and how can I motivate them right like and what's going to motivate each guy because what's going to motivate each guy is going to be different right like some guys are going to need that they're going to need like hey you're not coming with us in in November sorry you know stay home for the Nations League uh you know uh qualifier and there's gonna be a couple guys if he does that to him it's it's a big wakeup call and it's intentional it's not you're banned for the rest of time it's intentional I'm leaving this guy off because I know when he comes back in March we're gonna get a different guy right and that what's tough is he doesn't have much time to figure out who these guys are right so that kind of task is tough in a short span but hopefully he can kind of you know surmise that kind of figure that kind of thing out but I agree with ic's comment which is like it's got to be some relatively extreme stuff it can't just be same old same old no can't be and here's the thing we're gonna get we were talking about bur Halter's first tenure before like the reason I think bur halter was able to get a lot out of guys or certainly more out of guys than he got this cycle from 2020 to 22 is everybody was kind of new like he was still new to everyone we had a lot of guys making their debut and trying to prove themselves so there was kind of a chip on the children naturally because it was like Hey we're a young team hey I'm new to this roster right and then all of a sudden it just like you kind of this Malay set in when it was like hey these 15 guys are like non-negotiable and hand up I'm guilty as a fan I think I said that multiple times right and it's not my fault I'm a fan right I'm not coaching the team but it feels like that was kind of like the attitude from a coaching perspective as well which I think I lauded and separ celebrated in a way not not directly but I was like yeah cool we've got a core 15 and like we know but like in that process the coaches internally need to be like driving guys motivationally forward right you can't let complacency set in and you might even have to do some stuff that I as a fan I'm not going to understand and I might critique on my Twitter account who gives a crap right like but like as a coach you do things that's why like the actual coaching decisions and fan opinions are so different right like and I've always known that right but I'm still gonna give my opinion but like you have to make some hard calls and you got to make some hard calls that like the players aren't going to like the teammates might not like the fans might not like but this move has a long-term purpose right and it's not to ban John Brooks for good that's stupid it's a guy who can help you can you figure out how to get him back in the mix if you're gonna like not let him come the next Camp can we figure out how to get him back he could freaking help us and so you can't do that you can't ban Weston McKenna because you don't like what he does in the first camp but I don't know maybe he doesn't come the second Camp because something happens in that first camp and you don't like it right he's too Goofy and not working hard in training or whatever he's doing I'm just making stuff up right but guys are doing the same stuff that led to this current state of tying freaking New Zealand and getting bounced in the Copa as the host for the first time ever like like Trend setting stuff and we need Extreme Action to icy's point could be leaving guys home um and I think you know Marcus made a point like don't think any of these players are good enough to be Captain to be honest like I kind of agree like I I don't know where the captain is right now Marcus I agree with you so we haven't found him yet we we haven't found him and and you know one of the ego cheing now this was later in the tenure right but one ego checking moment that uh Jurgen clintsman infamously did right was leaving Landon Donovan off the World Cup roster in favor of Julian green a young Prospect who was playing on Bayern Munich's second team right but that was an ego check right that kind of got everybody like who whoa you're taking who over Landon Donovan arguably the best player in national team history and not to mention look at the other guys he took over he took over Julian green uh he took over Chris walowski I mean some guys that you would never I hated that move wowski freaking hated leaving Landon Donovan off don't know how everybody else felt but I freaking hated it just giving you my fan opinion once again wasn't in the doors don't know the real reason uh yeah anyway especially now that we know that Julian green never panned out to really amount to anything for the national team right I mean hey scored a nice goal in that World Cup though he did he did but that was that was it right that was it like Julian green you honestly it's kind of funny it's like Julian green was supposed to be like what polistic became right he was supposed to be like that young hot shot who was supposed to turn into something special for the national team that's why we uh Focus so heavily on recruiting him and make sure he committed to us and and bringing him to the World Cup um and it resulted it wasn't it wasn't a good result obviously um uh but you know that that was kind of like an ego Che to say like hey I don't care that you're the all-time leading goal scorer in national team history I don't care that you're the all-time appearance leader actually I think Co Kobe Jones is actually the all-time appearance leader but nonetheless I don't care that you're a national team Legend I don't think which we both agree was delusional I don't think you're the right person to bring on this 23 man roster and that putut people in check that you know the players were like damn dude Lon Donovan didn't come what how is LIN Donovan 32 years old you don't bring him to the World Cup in 2020 uh or sorry 2014 that just had a lot of people like head on a swivel right like whoa what's going on um I don't really know what you would I guess you would say John Brooks was um would be uh uh Greg berhalter's kind of like ego Che moment but like you said he banned him from the team man like that's kind of crazy even Lon Donovan got a farewell game after the world cup with Jurgen Clansman before he retired so I I think I think you have to do an ego Che move but don't burn any Bridges just kind of like put people in check put them on notice like don't burn a bridge though like try to just let people know they're gonna be held accountable and if they don't live up to your standard they're not going to play and I think patino will do that honestly I don't think you have the success in the Player Development he had at Tottenham unless you're good at handling Egos and handling how to approach player in certain situations um and you know what's interesting too is the you know being a a a club manager is interesting just because you have all these players from all over the world so you have all these different cultures different beliefs different personalities that's really hard to manage right you know now obviously we have some dual Nats that are you know from different cultures but um I think that that probably would be easier for him to manage than managing a team with all kinds of different types of people uh so hopefully he's able I I think he will succeed in managing all these different types of personalities especially because of his resume um and I'll be interested to see there is going to be a moment Adam I'm saying it right now September 10th 2024 there's going to be a moment where we're like wow this dude's holding these guys accountable finally finally like things are status quo's out the window you you're gonna you're gonna have to prove yourself you're going to have to hold we're going to hold a high standard you're not going to be able to just cruise control um or go through the motions on this team anymore ptic or McKenna you've had a cycle of five six bad games you're not gonna start man you're not gonna hell we're not gonna call you up if you have run like that again you're gonna get P Aiden Morris is gonna get called up uh and and Johnny card Johnny cardoso or Luca Del T to De laor is gonna play or or just somebody right someone's gonna take your spot and then Aiden Morris is gonna get the backup position that's what's got to happen that's what's got to happen and um I I'm I'm excited and thing too I want to ask you as we were kind of winding down I kind of have a hard out around like probably I probably have 10 more minutes cool um so now that it's official poo right we're gonna we're gonna do several videos and we're gonna it's gonna be exciting okay so Pan's coming up we got a month to prepare for it um what exactly are you wanting to see out of this this um these games like what what what do you think patino what would you be satisfied with seeing in patino's first appearance as us te manager yeah good question I I think first of all and a lot of people I'm going to get this hate and I'm prepared for it totally fine with it and a lot of people who have followed me for a couple years are going to be like you know are going to think I am inconsistent that I you know am not holding Potch to the same standard that I held burh halter but I'm GNA make it very clear if you followed me most of you guys didn't I didn't have very many followers in 2019 but in 2019 I you I've got the proof I've got the record I got the arguments there were a lot of people who were like hating on bur halter hard in 2019 and I didn't agree with a lot of what he was doing I was like man will trap like H fascinating right man Jackson U is getting a lot of run like maybe I just I'm not seeing what the coach is seeing a professional soccer coach is seeing man this guy must have some potential like I'm not a professional soccer coach I will give a professional soccer coach a lot of leeway to go make their decisions without critiquing them now I might question or be like huh that's interesting but at the end of the day with Balter like I didn't really start critiquing him hard until around the Panama World Cup qualifier to be honest because I was like very committed just like giving him time to be in his process figure this figure the team out right like I wasn't judging every call up we lost to Canada for the first time in like I don't know decades or something like that I don't know if you remember that in that Nations League game I think or it was a Nations League game back then I don't know whatever it was I think so yeah I think it was too and it was like oh my people were panicking I was like I don't know guys like we're in like camp three like we'll we'll get there I gave bur halter a lot of leeway and I am gonna give poch the same because I think any good any good coach isn't coming in like I've got to win this friendly like this friendly is what it's all about right a great coach is going the World Cup 26 is what it's all about right and I heard somebody say this earlier I thought it sounds right we have like 20ish games until the World Cup right so do I care a lot about the results in games one and two now the second game is against Mexico it's going to be hard to not care about that result right just naturally but do I care about the results in these two games right away I don't I care about him establishing you know the culture that he needs which may take some sacrifice in terms of things we've talked about having to leave certain guys out mixing up rosters making sure guys we're not just putting our best 11 on the pitch you might have to leave five off because he wants to set a set a make a make a statement of some sort I don't know right like but I'm GNA kind of give a lot of leeway in the first eight to 10 games of his tenure right leading up to the Gold Cup I think Nations League will be like I'm sure he's gonna see Nations league as a first Benchmark because it is a competition in region and I'll probably take that same approach um but I would imagine he's still kind of experimenting come Nations League that's only going to be as one two three four like Fifth and six game in charge or something like that you know Nations League semis and finals knock on wood if we get there so it's still tough in games five and six to expect it to be a finished product of some sort right like no coach is a miracle worker and is going to come in and get a team to play drastically different especially if they're in the state we are like that I mean I'm not saying no coach will you see it all the time with like new manager bump so maybe but if it doesn't I'm not going to be like alarmed personally right like my first true measuring stick will is next summer it's like man if we're like five camps in and 10 12 games in and we look crappy I'll be alarmed you know um if we look crappy in the Nations like really bad I'll be alarmed too to be honest right like so I'm looking out for reading reading the te leaves and reading through the lines of like how is he building leadership how is he building accountability and to your point I think we're going to have conversations and be like man that was it that's the moment we talked about a coule months back like I think that's what he's doing here um and those will be fun conversations to have but um results I'm not obsessed with here in this first Camp process I am like how does he want to play what formations do we see you know what kind of differences do we see in terms of how we're you know you know possessing either pressing do we have a pressing system like those kind of things are going to be really fun to see as well because we've seen similar version of the same stuff for a lot of years you know with with a couple mixups here and there yeah and I I'll be curious to see like you know if he goes to the 4231 is he going to go with a 433 um I think I know he played with a 4231 at Tottenham and then he played with a 4-33 with um with play him three at the back at Tottenham at times play him three in the back with tot be interesting which that you know I think that when D eventually gets healthy and when uh Jedi gets healthy uh you know five in the back well you know two Wing backs that could be interesting you know because I think that that could be very interesting to see how that would would would play out uh because I think that they do have some potential in the attack and obviously their speed is a is a as a weapon um but I you know it I'm like I'm like you I'm not looking for a clear-cut hey you have to go two and two- 0 or one in one or like a record I just it's like it's when I see it I'll know you know like when I watch him play and I just see the competent you know being competent putting players in positions to succeed a confidence the grit the chip on our shoulder I just want to see something different than we've seen the last six years and and you'll know if you see it different like you will know if you're watching the Greg uh uh burh halter ball or if you're watching poch work his magic and dude dude if we tie Mexico your timeline will be flooded with Greg berhalter would never flooded oh yeah sure flooded and I'm calling it right now and it very well could happen Mexico is going to be up for that game and if poch is treating it like a friendly like an experimental friendly very well we could tie if they're like all in and he's subbing and trying things out so you know just mark my words right now everybody will be in all your comments everybody will be on the timeline like oh my God we're regressing like no no no let's check it out in the Nations League that'll be the real to me first check mark of like you know where are we in a competitive match that he's going to win a trophy in want to win a trophy in so I just thought of this by reading a comment this guy uh John Terry said formations are fluid much more interested to see how we play in possession uh and out of possession but I something I agree with well for for formations are that to me right a formation isn't like oh he set up in a 4-33 it's like oh wow in buildup we have two in the back right in buildup here's how you know our six is interacting with our eight right or if we're in a double pivot once again once again fluid very fluid right but like what does that look like what does the middle of the park look like are we you know is there a clear emphasis on faster ball movement which I thought was always a struggle with burh halter really slow ball movement not quick decision- making right like simple things like that how far are we playing with two Wing backs or two uh fullbacks pressed up right we have a stay-at-home like there's all sorts of stuff I agree with what what John's saying right which is like the formation stuff that you should be interested in is what do you look like in possession out of possession and than in transition which isn't a formation but there's a lot of coaching emphasis on how you play in transition right are you going to you know press when you turn the ball over are you going to look to get back to your shell right and transition offense are you going to be a team that kind of passes back and looks to build you know kind of build are you going to look to get direct when you turn the ball when you turn the other team over so I agree with John those are the things that fascinate me though is like all of those moments right not just like oh he's in a 4-33 which is what you hear a lot but doesn't mean anything bur 433 and it's like what the hell does that mean like showing me in the game where whatever looks like our guys are in a 433 right like it's the Nuance that I think is really fun in soccer well let me let me ask you this because I just thought about this just for me the questions okay do you remember uh in the cleans air or tenure right when he did that weird experiment when he tried to make Michael Bradley like a 10 when he's clearly a six maybe an eight but he's he's he's a six and they try to make him a 10 a playmaker and that was just totally out of place right he just he doesn't have the creativity or the speed or or the vision to be a true playmaking number 10 what if Adam what if this is thinking out of the box a little bit what if poch does something we're not expecting what if these positions we see players playing he changes it up like you know Christian plays a Winger for AC Milan he plays a Winger for the usmt What If instead of Gio or Malik what if he plays ptic underneath or P or Sergeant what if he plays underneath because if I'm not mistaken it's not what Christian was playing mostly in his earlier days was playing more underneath he's done that some at Milan this year yeah exactly in the middle of the park this year at Milan some and yeah yeah no for sure we could definitely see that right he could have a totally different view on player profiles and like what he wants to do with guys he could be obsessed with Musa right Musa could be a non-negotiable guy for him and he could be Allin and just believe that he can coach Musa into something he's never been to could totally see that right and this kind of builds in well first of all I want to give a count another shout out to my guy God Kong just throwing a basketball comp out there you're like a man of my heart if you're throwing a basketball comp out there the Jason kid to Mike buholzer uh comp I feel like that is like not even as Extreme as as this will be I feel like this is like going from like uh I don't know like I'd have to name a really bad coach to be appropriate but yeah I mean we're going to like I can't overstate this enough man we have Emma Hayes coaching the women's team who is probably the best women's manager in the world and we have Macio Pino coaching the freaking Men's National Team who's not the best manager in the world but he's certainly in an upper echelon over the last decade he is in the top tier of managers in the last decade and I I'm I'm sure I'm going to be in the argument all my same arguments about his PSG in Chelsea era that I was in for like two weeks after the rumor was confirmed I'm like committed to staying out of those I've like said my piece about him I do want to say this because I know you have to go I've been holding this back the whole time here's what I most excited about at Tottenham I said this a month ago too and most of these people probably haven't heard of it I'm heard it but I'm gonna say it again the most exciting thing is we've seen poch build a team one time one time he basically got a year at PSG a little bit more he got a year at Chelsea he was at Southampton I think one year before he got plucked right so we have in his coaching tenure right post you know Post South or since he went to Southampton right he obviously has a resume before that but in like the modern era of poach last 10 years what we've seen is Tottenham is the one place he got to establish build his leadership Player Development full system development integration enough time to do it right and I get that like you don't have that much time with a national team but you have years right it has to be done in different ways you're not going to have as much Camp time or practice time Etc but he has a lot of time now he's going to have to spend a lot of that time in Europe right like going to meet with guys talking with guys like doing things in between camps that you know can progress you know stuff but what I'm most excited about is in that Tottenham run if you take a look at it right like Kane was a young guy who was not really kind of shy kind of awkward not known as a leader right Christian Erikson same way early in his career not like a boisterous outgoing guy Sunny couldn't even speak English right like all of these guys you can go across the board were not like none of them were known as like leaders or like Future Leaders of soccer teams and all of those guys within that Tottenham team figured out how to lead what their very clear definition what is your role right and then once again in Cup competitions right we saw him lead a team to a Champions League final in a cup competition doesn't mean it's going to happen all the time but but we know it's in the bank we know we can build a team and build leaders and build belief and build confidence and build a system strong enough to bring Tottenham freaking Hotspur to a Champions League final which is nuts which is nuts if you look at the history of it I don't remember exactly I did it before our last time they made like one or two Champions Leagues or you know whatever it was called before the Champions League ever in their history ever and he got them to like three straight in a final you know same thing like they very rarely finished in the top four right and he went you know whatever it was two three two two but do you remember who they s but this is another important piece right what player did they sell right before he came there when they thought if they get rid of this player this team is going to crumble and fall into shambles of course I do Gareth Bale Gareth Bale and right it's a great note though right like Gareth Bale was like the Savior like he was Way Way Beyond Kane before Kane in terms of what people thought about him at that age like he was like you know he went to freaking Real Madrid right like it's not under I can't understate it like so that's a great point they lose Bale and he's able to build this team up with this kind of awkward crew of dudes I remember like our soccer coach who's a massive EPL and Tottenham fan I remember like playing FIFA with Tottenham and Harry Kane being on the team was like a 77 and being like I talked to our soccer coach daily one of my one of my boys what do you think of Kane man like I was I was playing FIFA with him last night he's like n he's kind of like a marginal Striker probably won't be on Tottenham long probably end up mid-table I was like that's what you know he's a legit soccer mind but that is what Kane was as a prospect he was not some like can't miss erling Holland he just wasn't and like it was underp that all those things happened Sunny became Sunny Kane became Kane Erikson fully fleshed himself out Deli Ali who's like you know people say Gio is kind of a little bit of an oddball right a little different like Deli Ali is not like a bad com for Gio in terms of just how people talk about both of them right like oh I don't know deli's weird like and he was able to get the best out of a player like Deli who sense po like can somebody remind me of what happened to Deli like barely heard of the guy right but like yeah so this is a guy that can maximize Player Development he can maximize who players are he can build confidence in a unit is it per is his resume perfect no no coach we would get is it going to be perfect but man I'm pumped to see him put a little bit of that Tottenham touch onto this group over the next two years 20 games 10 camps right and everything in between it's going to be fun man and I'm really like I'm more optimistic for this team than I have been since maybe 2021 like I feel more optimism more excitement than I have in three years honestly United States hot Yanks right that's what they are man the hot Yanks that that hey might catch on a little bit but yeah I mean I'm excited just to see what happens I mean um we're gonna get a lot of answers and pettino he might be imperfect but I think our national team's imperfect so I think it's a imperfect couple making a perfect match if that makes any sense and I think that having a guy i i people like to think that if Pep Guardiola came to this team it was going to solve all issues man look Pep's good but he coaches the best team at every stop he has it's he's not coaching with the 20th well I'd probably say top I don't know where you would rank us like actual talent wise compared to other national teams somewhere between 15 and 20 I would say but he's never he's never went coached the 15th or the 20th uh between 15 and 20 in the EPL or La Liga or Syria you know so it's just a whole different standard whereas patino has taken Tottenham a team that has traditionally been a mid-table team and like you said built them from the ground up competed went to a Champions League final keep in mind Champions League final during the Pep Guardiola era at Manchester City and played the Super team version uh Liverpool that Jurgen klopp had built what in his time there and nearly lost so yeah man they were always and people are gonna freak out in the comments when I say this because they're going to misrepresent it probably but I'll try and be as clear as I can they were always a second tier Club in Europe they were never considered a top tier Club at the end when he left it was a big six in England right it was never a big sick go back to 99 there no Tottenham in a big six in England right like that was like definitely they had some nice years before that in terms of Player Development but he's the guy that got the results right and like but that's why I wanted to preface this it's not about we we're Tottenham 2015 we're not we don't have those players I get it but like we are well positioned in World Soccer we are very clearly a second tier Nation right there is a whole tier of Nations that can really win a World Cup and then there's a second tier that have been like okay and made round of 16 and like we're somewhere in that tier you can argue about where but like we're in a we're a tier down from the top and that's kind of where Tottenham was and he was able to elevate them is he going to be able to do the same with us and bring us to a World Cup final I don't know I I mean I we can dream but like is he going to elevate us I am very confident will I just am I'm really confident we're going to see elevation and then how that plays out in the actual knockout 20s we're in you know some luck in that and there's some draw in that but I think we're going to be well positioned as well positioned as we can expect to be to make a run in two years I I really confidently believe that and I'm really excited to see this just play out man and to see our guys play soccer with passion and fun again because it's been a while well listen I can't wait until we get to John Terry says come on Adam we're not in the second tier man we're in the third at best most likely well how big are your tiers like my tiers are like more than four teams right I would say like 10 to 12 or in like some version of a tier one like I don't know I agree with that how many teams can win a World Cup like in any given year I feel like eish like there's i' say eight maximum 10 maybe so I don't know like where like like I it's just a weird argument right like we literally made The Knockout rounds in like 94 02 10 14 like we're making the round of 16 like it's hard to argue we're not if you want to say three I'm fine but we're like a tiar down for sure right yeah like look at Tottenham Seasons 20 years before poach got there they were not tier two a lot of those years they were like struggling some of those years so once again like we can argue over the specifics here but like it it is what it is right Hey listen hey God Kong says that you need make a tier list I don't want to get into it man there's I hate those arguments so much BR you have us7 at 18 I have them at 14 no way I have them at 22 and I'm like all right like all right all right bro we're splitting hairs at that point right we're splitting whatever like we're we're not in the tier of team that can win we're in this the other tier I mean we're also not like I don't know go look at 30 to 40 30 to 50 in the FIFA rankings like those aren't very good teams I like I don't know we're not those guys guys we shouldn't be we've been worse than I mean hell we just drew 94 so maybe we're not in the top 100 when PCH takes us over but I have confidence he's gonna get us there well okay so Adam will be back we're going to do probably a video breaking down the roster because I think that's one thing we're going to be very excited about to see we think that poch maybe had some influence of this roster but we don't not for sure but when that Panama Mexico uh cycle comes out or um you know group of of friendlies we're going to know who patino rates or who he wants to see first right that first cop of players he brings in uh so we'll probably do a break a breakdown of that in some fashion Adam which I'm looking forward to doing and then we'll obviously give some feedback on what we think uh his first game in the performance um I appreciate you coming on man make sure you like this video subscribe to the channel hit that little bell notification so you never miss a video also follow my friend Adam stand usmnt for some great great usmnt coverage and also some other good coverage you know not just usmnt other soccer takes hell maybe even some basketball takes occasionally right it's the coach coming out of you co uh coming out of him uh so make sure you give him a follow um and is there any departing thoughts you have anything you'd like to close with holler out to the guys in the chat it's been fun wish we could you know throw you guys in here with us to debate and chat but uh it's been real and uh man I just good times ahead like at least you know the fun thing like this is what we said a month ago goes like no matter what there's going to be like EXC unless it just goes real sideways which knock gun would I don't think that happens like we're gonna be excited for the next year as this happens right at least I am like I'm G to be excited and optimistic and I know there's going to be ups and downs it's not going to be growth isn't this right I'm not expecting that there's gonna yeah there's going to be some waves and pulls but you know the hope is that by next summer we see a different team than we saw this summer right and if and if there's growth from Summer the summer to me that's like a really good sign that with another year right we could see you know another big leap which is what we want to see we want to see two leaps we're at the bottom of the barrel right now as low as I've been since Kua and it's like can we go leap leap summer to summer we got a guy who can get us there will so hey we can't complain about the manager anymore we've got a really good one and now we got to turn it over to him and let us do his thing let's ride can't wait to see what happens until next time guys I'll see you all soon
