space is empty top of the eight Francis wi the O2 swing in a flyball shallow left at low peredo who makes the catch and we go to the bottom of the eigh two nothing Blue Jays still no hits for the Angels we all know how Bowen is he's very present and he's very uh meticulous with his thoughts and his routine he was great when I went out there you know looked right in my eyes and I said hey just stay present right now and as part of this day kind of enjoy what you're about to hear from the crowd um and hopefully he did that that was manager John Schneider talking about Bowen Francis who nearly became the second blue J to ever throw no hitter instead the day September 2nd 1990 will stand on its own still as the lone Blue Jays no hitter thrown by Dave Steve Francis put in a valiant effort though Chris in what was another great game in a really entertaining series for the Blue Jays yeah and typical balen Francis style didn't really react to the crowd walking off the field he gave a little bit of a peace sign as he entered the Dugout I like that really kind of capped off what an incredible day I can't tell you how many people just walking around the ballpark today looked at me and said how exciting was yesterday and I looked at them dead in the eye and I said that was probably one of the more exciting days that I've ever had at the baseball stadium on the field in the broadcast Booth bden Francis really pitched his butt off a lot of good pitches I don't really care what Taylor Ward says not every pitch was hitable a lot of good fast balls a lot of good split fingers and then he really mixed in that curveball which I loved that's Chris Laro I'm Ben Schulman welcome back to Rogers Center game four about to get set between the Blue Jays and the angels Blue Jays looking for a sweep before we get to this game though let's look at the bet 365 standings at bet 365 you can watch thousands of live games build your own bet and can even make a bet while the his 100th career win is ready Kevin Gosman that is exactly right Kevin Gosman is looking for a milestone today of course he has pitched for a long time 12 seasons in the major leagues this is his 285th start in 324th career game and he sits with a record of 99 and 100 so he can get to 100 and 100 with a win today the Blue Jays can get a sweep with a win today and Toronto just standing on the edge of the Dugout right now Third Base side getting ready to trot out onto the field for Kevin gsman this season it'll be his 26th start 11-9 with a 424 earned run out average 131 strikeouts to 43 walks for the right-hander who's thrown 144 and a third Innings pitched he steps onto the mound now as the Blue Jays get out on the field Toronto wearing their baby blue uniforms today Jersey and pants on the other side the Angels go back to the All gry Uniform that they had in night one of this series with gray uniforms and gray pants with red lettering on the front and the back first inning today was brought to you by Armstrong bird food bring nature to your backyard with Armstrong feeding blue Jas since 1986 visit Armstrong bird food.com and with Gosman getting set to face Taylor Ward Zack Netto and Kevin polar we may as well get to what you were talking about with Taylor Ward and what he said before he steps up if you didn't see it yesterday after bow and Francis flirted with a no hitter that Taylor Ward did break up with a home run in the ninth inning Ward was quoted by mlb.com's Julia CZ saying that she asked what was so tough about Francis and he said quote I really don't know you know I thought that everything was hitable maybe to other guys he made better pitches a lot of guys were talking about his splitter and that being on but personally I didn't think it was anything special end quote your thoughts Chris Lura well I I tend to disagree with Taylor Ward I know where he's coming from obviously you have to be confident as a professional athlete and maybe think that that every pitch is pable because you have so much confidence in your ability but with that being said Bowen Francis made a ton of good pitches yesterday I specifically loved the fast ball yes he threw some some some split fingers in the middle of the plate that were quote unquote hitable but he was keeping the Angels off of those floating split fingers because the fastball was so good because he was locating that fast ball so well so yes I disagree with what Taylor Ward said Taylor Ward will step into the box now as we're getting ready to go in this ball game Kevin Gosman rocking back and forth on the rubber stops kicks and delivers and the first pitch is hit foul back into the screen 0 and one time the first pitch today 1:40 p.m. Eastern it's an even better day today in downtown Toronto than it was yesterday how about 26° and a perfectly blue Sunny Sky 01 up and in with a fast ball a ball and a strike it's your kind of day Ben no sweatshirt no chill in the air I'm loving it a little bit of wind blowing the banners out in center field toward right field but nothing too crazy gosman's 1-1 swing and a shallow Fly ball right field racing in is the right fielder andison Barger he'll make the catch one out Kevin gosman's got his good fastball today that first fast ball of the day was 95 we've seen him so often this season start off the game 91 9 2 maybe 93 but today he's been 94 95 in the first inning that's a pretty good sign four seam fast ball Sinker splitter and slider for Kevin Gosman right on right now a battle with Zach Netto the pitch strike one home PL up today is Gabe Morales Edwin jenez at first Ryan Addison at second and the crew chief Doug eding Manning third base a one miss down stairs with the splitter a ball in a strike dark blue sleeves for the 6'2 right-hander Kevin Gosman they Peak out of the bright blue uniform one-1 Pitch hit on the ground foul one and two Bosman ahead now of Zach Netto who took a walk across the plate now for time n will take a practice swing now he's got red sleeves peing out of the gray Jersey and smeared eye black kind of like the Bryce Harper look smeared the eye black all across his cheeks he's staring at it gsman who set at the bellt the kick in the onew swing and a bouncer foul behind the batter Netto I tell you what I don't know if you've seen a little league player or a high school player recently but almost every single player in high school has the smeared eye black look I think it was Harper that made it popular I could be wrong but that's who I remember first doing it one two again just below the knees with the splitter really good take there by Netto I mean you obviously weren't when you were a pitcher but were you ever an ey black guy prior to that no I didn't like the feeling of it on my face two two just off the plate down with a fast ball it's a full count but I get it though I get the look it looks kind of cool but I just I just never like the feeling what about you every once in a while 3-2 pitch swing and a bouncer to short picked up by Jimenez a Crow Hop and throw on to first to get Neto who was running hard and there are two outs that was the Sinker right there from Kevin Gosman you don't really see many of those but a lot of movement a lot of downward action to that thing 93.8 milph pretty good pitch what situation do you want to see him use that pitch like when do you think it's best well when you're trying to conserve pitches early in ball games as we hear the Applause for for Kevin polar but I think that when you're trying to conserve pitches when you're trying to induce a double play but when you're trying to get that heater up in the zone you want to see a for seamer Gosman delivers to Polar and it's a high for steamer foul tipped into the glove of Kirk going one Kevin po has played in every game of this series came on as a substitute Midway through the opener and then started the next three including today 01 fouled back nothing and two playing Left Field today is polar center field the last few days he's batting 259 on the season with 16 doubles and seven homers between the angels and white socks he struck out four times yesterday and three of those strikeouts were on Awkward looking swings wasn't very comfortable yesterday against balen Francis 02 and he swats a high fast ball over the netting and into the seats foul even that fast ball there you could see the awkward swing he was definitely expecting something down in the zone probably a split finger Kevin gsman coming up above that Strike Zone at 95 milph another 02 misses down through the Sinker again at the bottom of the Zone but it just dropped below the knees parlar back in the Box Standing close to the plate one two fouled Over The netting again Gosman threw him a splitter actually left it a little bit up but polar just sliced it into the seats yeah that kind of had change up action to it where it kind of just floated in the heart of the play but you want to see that that violent action down in the strike zone let's see if he throws another one here 1 two swing in a Miss strike three gets more on top of that splitter and gets Bard to swing over top of it and that's a one two three top of the first for gosin no score Blue Jays and Angels back in a moment you're listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local back strikeout on sportset 590 the fan and the sportset radio network welcome back to Rogers Center bottom of the first inning I'm Ben scholman to my left is Chris Laro no score Blue Jays and Angels Tyler Anderson the Lefty on the mound for the Halos winds and delivers to George Springer first pitch up top ball one for Anderson it's his 26th starting the year out and out the Ace of this staff he's 10 and 11 with a 340 ra 1 high two and0 pretty interesting pitcher and and we have to start at the thing that when you're watching him in person sticks out right away really funky delivery for the left-hander Anderson his 2- swing and a bouncing ball foul two and one he brings that heel up to almost the hamstring not quite all the way up but about three times before he starts his delivery really really funky he kicks outward with that right leg one two three times kind of like fake pump faking you that he's going to start striding toward the plate 2-1 swing and a bouncer on the ground to third picked up by the third baseman Drury who throws across the diamond for the first out but he has been good throughout throughout his career he's been incredibly consistent for this Angels team this season outside of the last couple of starts where he's walked six guys he's been a very very solid pitcher for this Angel's team yeah he is coming off some rough ones four earned in six Innings at Kansas City and then the Blue Jays put seven on him in Anaheim on the 14th his pitch to Joey L peredo is hooked foul on the ground 0 and one welcome to the timbermart broadcast Booth Chris and Ben also our host show Ali producer Nick Blackmore and our technical directors Andrew Adams and Tom young left on left the 01 swing in a Miss got him to chase a non fast ball in the dirt that was the cutter down and Away nothing and two pretty much three pitches for the Lefty a high 80s for seamer a change up which is a a big pitch for him and then a cutter Lefty WI and delivers bounced it down in a away went back to the cutter two balls two strikes I think the most impressive thing about Tyler Anderson is is yes he has below average stuff and he's had incredible success in the big leagues but he'll throw that change up at any point 3 0 2 10 22 any time during any at bat his onew has bounced down and Away really throwing this cutter a lot right now two and two and he also mixes in that cutter especially to lefties he's going to throw the cutter to lefties more than he's going to throw his for seamer but when righties come up it's a lot of for seam change two two swing and a foul ball hit the foot of low peredo and rolls past the mound toward Short Stop still two balls two stuck and there was that change right there left on left change you really don't see it all that often from left-handed pitchers they tend to shy away from the left on left change up just because it becomes a very hitable BP fast ball if not located properly obviously Tyler Anderson believes in that pitch another 2- two and this one is hit in the air out to left field racing back polar near the corner leaps and he can't bring it in it does land foul but that's a new feature of the ballpark that polar's not used to despite the games that he's played not just in center but left in Toronto he was running toward the corner where that wall now ramps up very high and he just ran out of room yeah maybe in the old configuration he would have made that play actually I don't know if he does that's a tough play even for Kevin polar but you're right he's probably not used to that configuration where did this come from all of a sudden another pitch to low peredo inside ball three and this is turning into quite the at bat for low peredo fouled off a couple pitches and he's seen seven overall one out base is empty the 3-2 swing and a foul ball spoiled back behind the [Music] plate low peredo hitting in the 240s on the season mostly with Houston but also a couple weeks now with Toronto eight doubles four triples and four home runs and he takes up top Ball Four a nine pitch walk taken by L pero Pretty Good At Bat right there from Joey L pero we had the chance to talk to him last night after the game and mentioned that he's been working hard on his mechanics with Matt heg and and working in the batting cage and and I tend to to see the results on the field I mean he's been a completely different guy the approach the swing path I think he's going to be a great player got a lot of speed too big lead off first in the pitch to Vladimir Guerrero Jr strike one scoreless ball game bottom of the first one out and a run on on first Guerrero hitting 318 27 homers the 01 swing and a miss over top of the change up there that was well located and it's nothing in two yeah that had a lot of tumble to it and that's that's the the big factor with Tyler Anderson's change up has a lot of downward movement Anderson staring at first base kicks and delivers and bounc it to the plate Guerrero putting his palm up to the sky to hold up low peredo as oapp blocked that one clean off the I always wonder why hitters do that there's no chance that anybody at first base is looking at the guy in the Batters box seeing if they approve of whether they should go to second base or not I think if it's like caught up in feet you know if it skips by maybe then cuz they have a good view onew swinging a foul back another change up this one right on the outside corner and Guerrero leaned forward just to spoil it away [Music] what a day it was for Vlad yesterday four plate appearances produced two hits in a walk a double that scored a run and a solo Homer another onew swing and a pop up behind the first basem kavadis second baseman stonic on the right field Turf brings it in and there are two outs that's a pretty good sequence right there two change ups that were down in the zone vad was out in front of that change up and then Tyler Anderson came back with a a very average fast ball at 90 mph right at the hands and Vlad couldn't get the barrel to it and just hit a weak popup to second base but that just proves that Tyler Anderson knows exactly what he's doing out there left-hander in his ninth Major League season most of it spent with the Colorado Rockies his pitch to Alejandro Kirk with two outs and low peredo on first strike one for Anderson the angels are actually his sixth team since 2019 first the Rockies then some brief stints with the Giants the Pirates the Mariners a year with the Dodgers oh one pitch off the plate away one and one signed a two-year deal coming off of a great Dodgers season signed a two-year deal with the angels struggled last year but back on form this season 1-1 just off the plate High two balls and one strike it's always better to have a good year your the second year of that contract than the first year absolutely he's doing it right I mean you'd love good years both years but if you had to pick 2-1 pitch swing in a bouncing ball left side on the Run picked up by Drury he'll throw the short way to first and get low peredo pardon me to second he gets low peredo on a fielder's choice to end the inning a walk for the Blue Jays no hits no runs they leave one on and no score Blue Jays and Angels after an inning you're listening to Blue J's baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Ross play responsibly Ontario only Joe Adell stepping in for the Angels no score Toronto in Los Angeles here at Rogers Center Kevin gsman back at the top of the hill comes set at the belt looking in at the right-handed hitter Adele here's the pitch check swing pitch was low ball one I'm Ben Schulman alongside Chris laru last of the home stand for the Blue Jays before they go to Boston for five games in four days 1 inside 2 and0 you looking forward to that double header tomorrow oh yeah oh yeah history is going to be made history will be made in a very nerdy type way that I enjoy but it will be made two swing in a Fly ball shallow right Barger racing in looking into the Sun and he makes the catch off to his left a little awkward there but he makes the play one out yeah Addison Barger was looking directly at the sun you could see him shading his eyes with that glove while he was trying to catch it and the shadow is right behind him so that just tells you that that sun is right in his face quick out though for gsman after missing with the first two pitches here's Mickey moniac batting for the Angels the center fielder comes up with one out third baseman Clement on the turf watching a bunt and the pitch strike one you mentioned though the double header tomorrow and this is all in a jam-packed stretch for the Blue Jays 18 games in 17 days this is game 10 of that stretch here's the 01 just low a ball and a strike what what was it like for players and I know you weren't technically an everyday player but a reliever is pitching in a lot of days what are these stretches kind of like physically and mentally well I think it's obviously harder on everyday guys one-1 Pitch hit foul one and two that's why you saw Vlad get the off day a couple days ago welld deserved off day especially right in the middle of a long stretch of games but I think the hardest thing that people don't don't really realize is just the day-to-day grind you have to wake up come to the field work out play the game it's just onew hit on the ground up the Middle where the short stop him in as his position picks it up throws the first two down the baseball schedule schedule in general is very rough and you obviously know this as a broadcaster it's a very similar lifestyle very similar schedule but I always say that those off days are so important just to absolutely do nothing kind of recharge mentally recharge physically and with 18 days and or sorry 18 games in 17 days it's almost impossible to ever recharge the pitch to Logan Oh Hoy misses outside ball one no score two out spacers empty top of the second off days are Big laundry days well that too I forgot to say that meal prep a little bit 1 oh swing and a miss one and one ohpp the young catcher hitting 251 17 home runs and a bit of a slide this month had a tough day yesterday 0 for three swings and hits the ball on the ground to Third diving stop by Clement gets up throws on to First and makes a very nice play to end the top of the second six up six down so far for Gosman with the help of his defense and it's still scoreless middle of the second inning you're listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you Rogers Center scoreless ball game Blue Jays and Angels it'll be 567 for Toronto batting this inning Ernie Clement will Wagner and Leo Jimenez as Toronto tries to get on the board first funky left-hander Tyler Anderson back on the mound the Lefty wines and deliver home called strike [Music] one Anderson the 20th overall pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2011 01 swing and a miss nothing and two was selected in the first round out of Oregon in part because he's the all-time Oregon Duck strikeout leader struck out almost 300 in his college career 02 check swing liner foul [Music] and had had a bit of an up and down career in Colorado but it's almost hard not to have an up and down career as a starting pitcher for a long time with the Rockies 02 Clement just sticks the bat out and pokes it foul over the screen to stay alive did you pitch much in Colorado I pitched once how was it it it was snowing oh yeah man it was an interesting interesting inning I walked the bases loaded then got out of it 02 pitch High one and two while it was snowing which is pretty cool all right I mean all well that ends well you know so that's not too bad L Mana asks for time steps out of the box 268 hitter back in now 17 doubles 10 home runs for Ernie CL one two swing and a popup just back of second base Michael stepanic makes a two-handed catch on the turf and there's one out such a tough cutter from Tyler Anderson that thing looks like a fast ball 86 mph and then Just Darts in to righties away from lefties that one got in on Ernie Clement hit a little weak Fly ball to the second baseman but such a tough pitch to go along with that change up and that pretty average fast ball another left on left matchup now here's will Wagner with one out first pitch hit on the ground sofly to Second picked up by stonic and two quick outs as stonic throws over to first we are just hours away from jayc's 5050 G prize draw and one lucky fan will be taking home over $470,000 imagine what you outs the pitch strike one it just went up from 471 to 472 we could be looking at 500k by 10 p.m. Eastern you know what I would uh happily accept 472 or [Laughter] 500 01 swinging a foul off 0 [Applause] and2 imagine the number will go up from some of the fans in the ballpark today too it is absolutely loaded in here at Rogers Center very few empty sheets even in the upper levels of the ballpark scoreless game bottom of two two strikes and two outs the pitch to Leo Jimenez high ball one yeah it's an incredible day to be at the Ballpark obviously there's some Buzz around the city Friday night the back-to-back homers to to walk off the angels and then last night B in Francis with such an incredible outing on the Mound one two swing and a miss by Jimenez strike three the first K today I'm Ben Schulman alongside Chris Laro Brandon jury leads off with a foul tip into the glove of Alejandro Kirk and it's 0 and one smooth sailing so far for Kevin Gosman has retired all six batters he's faced gets the bottom third now of the Angel order a one pitch missed just high on the slider one ball one strike well Kevin Gosman has looked like vintage Kevin Gosman that mid90s fast ball the sharp slider and the pretty good split finger to go along with it 1-1 called strike heater at the bottom of the Zone it's nothing and two or it's one and two pardon me durur the batter hitting 155 on the season has missed some time it's his 74th game onew check swing High fast ball two balls and two strikes after Drury it'll be niik kades and then Michael stefanic for the angels two two pitch fast ball Frozen strike three looking for seamer on the outer third for gosman's second strikeout of the start and that's just a pitch that he's really been inconsistent with all season long locating that pitch that four seamer throwing throwing it with some velocity we've seen a lot of low 90s for seamers this season that one right there was absolutely perfect so one out now and the infield moves to pull for the Lefty hitter Niko kavadis that fouls it back ow and one bases are empty no base runners yet for the Angels Short Stop Leo Jimenez is playing right up the middle for the Blue Jays Ernie Clement the third baseman almost playing short 01 at the knees with a fast ball at 96 and it's nothing in two it's ironic that Ernie is is shaded so far towards second base because kavadas hit a home run earlier on in this series two left field his only major league hit one for 21 in seven games 02 check swing fast ball just missed away he is really feeling that fast ball today just used it to strike out Brandon Drury onew went back to the splitter and bounced it off the plate we've actually seen some starts this season where the split finger is 85 86 today it's 89 88 his arm is obviously feeling good today Gosman stretches out that right arm steps onto the rubber rocking back and forth now the 2 two swinging a popup foul into the seats really how much is the difference between 9293 and 95 96 to a hitter I think it all depends on location obviously watching Kevin Gosman today the location has been pretty good he's locating down and away he's locating up 93 down the middle 96 down the middle there's no difference it's down the middle 96 at the top of the zone and a swing in a Miss by niik kavadis Kevin Gosman strikes him out and there are two down but 96 at the top of the zone and 93 at the top of the zone or down and Away 96 and 93 they're very different pitches it all it all depends on location it all depends on how how difficult the location is to hit two outs now and Gosman faces Michael stefanic a right-handed hitter pitch home strike one and we actually talked about that yesterday it's it's I always believe and this is from a a guy who threw 91 93 milph his whole career location always trumps velocity the1 swing and a bouncer up the middle On The Run picked up by Jimenez slings over to first and that's another quick inning for gsman another 1 two three as he's retired all nine he's faced so far no score middle of the third you're listening to Blue J's baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rust Control Center Russ today find your local family-owned Crown at crown Canada's number one rust protection no score bottom of the third David Schneider takes the first pitch for strike [Music] one Schneider Barger Springer for the Blue Jays Tyler Anderson's next pitch bounces is a ball in strike it's been a tough couple months well publicized for David Schneider batting one 98 now on the season 18 doubles and 10 home runs 1-1 check swing change up right on the outside corner for strike two Schneider brings the bat to his right shoulder the onew pitch bounce to the plate shneer getting back to- back starts was at second base yesterday plays Left Field today for the Blue Jays 22 swing in a chopper foul still two and two and maybe that could be a bit of a recipe if he's in a little bit more cuz feels like over the last couple weeks he's stuck in this tough cycle that a lot of guys get into where you don't hit very well and then you play less and then that makes it harder to improve upon your [Applause] hitting 22 high ball three and then I think on top of that is is he's under this microscope because he set the bar so high initially when he first got to the big leagues that everybody expects him to continue on and and have that 3-2 pitch in the dirt Paul four the same results and that's just not realistic so the the fact that he's under this microscope trying to fight the mechanical issues that he's having the mental issues that he's having and then on top of that he's doing that in front of 40,000 people at the major league level it's it's it's kind of a recipe for disaster honestly good plate appearance there though to lead it off with a walk second Blue Jays base runner today now the pitch to Addison Barger and he bunts it down the third Baseline but it just veers foul not afraid to bunt it there with Brandon jury playing in and that wasn't really a sacrifice he got the barrel out there relatively late not something we've seen very often from the pretty big muscular power hitter and Addison barer thrown a bunt down yeah and if that was about 2 or three feet to the right he would have had himself a base hit and the Blue Jays would have had Runners on first and second and nobody out that's a pretty good thought from such a young player it wasn't a bad bunt I mean it probably went 50 ft maybe 55 ft before it ended up rolling foul 01 swing in a line drive center field sinking and down for a base hit turning around second Schneider will hold up there it's the first hit for either side today and the Blue Jays have first and second nobody out thanks to Addison Barger well that wasn't a bad pitch from Tyler Anderson it was a cutter off the plate away but like we've seen so often from Addison Barger over the last week or two his approach is just better doesn't try to pull that pitch stays on it gets it off the end of the bat just dumps it in into center field for a base hit now a big opportunity to break the ice in this game George Springer in the top of the order up to the plate Schneider on second Barger on first no outs Anderson looks at second delivers and hits the top of the Zone with a cutter for strike [Music] one Anderson leaning forward now sets glove at his chest the pitch fouled back nothing and [Music] two these two faced each other a bit this is the 13th potential at bat for Springer against Anderson Springer did Homer off Anderson last year 02 swing and a miss strike three good change up gets Springer and there's one out yeah that's a tough one right there it looked like a strike it looked like it could just Nick the outside of that Strike Zone and then just faded away and George Springer was way out in front a little bit fooled right there by that change up so Springer down and the runners hold at first and second now Joey L peredo tries to drive in David Schneider from second base left on left the pitch check swing pitch was low one and0 low pero was the first base runner of the day he walked back in the first Inning on a nine pitch at bat 1 oh swing in a Miss don't see low peredo walk very often that was only his 10th walk of the season and now his 57th game pitch home down an in ball two Tyler Anderson actually drops that arm angle on that Sinker he threw that one 87 mph a little bit of sink to it but little bit of deception there on that fast ball you don't really see it that often 21 goes over the top and L perfo hits it on the ground to First picked up by kavadas his only play is to go to the first base bag for the out both Runners will advance Barger to Second and to third but there are two down Anderson asking for a new baseball and he's not going to throw it to the next scheduled hitter Vladimir Guerrero Jr intentionally walked before he even got up to the plate to load the bases so the Baton is passed here to Alejandro Kirk second intentional pass to Vlad in as many days yeah and it's it's obviously disappointed that the fans don't get to see Vlad hit with with two runners in scoring position but if I'm Ron Washington that's a no-brainer right there 100 times out of a 100 pitch to Alejandro Kirk inside ball one the one thing it does do is put the pressure on Anderson to throw strikes and if you exclude the intentional walk Anderson has still walked two other guys today 10 low ball two and now things get precarious yeah Tyler Anderson doesn't have incredible command he's walked 58 guys this season in in just over 150 Innings so that's about a walk every three Innings so that's I wouldn't say that's great command he still has okay command but in a situation like this you're right it's a it's a precarious situation for a guy like that two out Bases Loaded the 2-0 Kirk takes a crazy call for a strike to be honest with you that pitch was way up in in but somehow called a strike and it's two and one and I mean that is a life ref to Tyler Anderson if ever needed one well John Schneider was immediately barking at Gabe Morales about that one the worst part about that was Logan Oh Hoppy's frame job 2-1 pitch off the plate away that was actually a pretty close one they do call it a ball and now it's three and one although still Kirk should be at first right now and it should be one nothing Blue Jays well that pitch was about a ball off the plate Logan o hoppy caught that baseball and brought his glove to the middle of the plate such a I mean whatever 3-1 called strike that one actually hit the zone and now it's a full count Schneider's on third base barger's on second and Guerrero's on first no score bottom of the third Full Count and two outs Runners get the Head Start here's the pitch to Kirk up top ball four and the Blue Jays Take the Lead one nothing on the RBI walk by Alejandro Kirk and that's the risk you take if you're Ron Ron Washington you have an open base you put Vladimir Guerrero J junor on now there's nowhere to put Alejandro Kirk and Tyler Anderson unfortunately if you're if you're in that Angel's Dugout he walks Kirk and and forces in in a run that's going to prompt a mound visit from Barry enrite I mean I don't think it was for the lack of confidence in pitches it really just looked like Anderson was spraying the ball all over the place yeah and he actually got a uh the benefit of a terrible call too from gamer Alis so they'll regroup on the mound and by the way welcome to the timbermart broadcast Booth when Home Improvement projects are throwing you a curveball talk to the folks at timbermart before you begin your next job they've got the material and know how to make sure you have all your bases covered timbermart Canada's Building Center Gabe Morales now will go out and break up that mound meeting bar inright in the whole infield including the catcher Logan Oh hoppy went out to the mound everyone returning to their positions before Ernie Clement hits still Bas is loaded still two outs one- nothing Blue Jays bottom of the third left on right the pitch to Clement in the dirt ball one if you include that intentional walk Tyler Anderson now has four walks in just two and 2/3 inning for a guy that Prides himself in control and command of his pitches that is a ton of walks this is what he did against the Blue Jays when they saw him in anahe he walked four guys in that start 10 high ball two that that fast ball was nowhere near the strike zone out about the head level of Ernie Clement you took the thought right out of my head I don't know if you're swinging here if you're Clement until you get a strike two- pitch top of the Zone strike threw the change up up there and it's two and one I was actually thinking though that fast ball at the at about eye level is a pitch that Ernie CL likes to hit now the 2-1 damn it just off the plate down in away a little bit of frustration it's three and one Anderson didn't like the call and he he might be right on that one I mean he got a crazy call in the last plate appearance but that did look like it caught the zone base is loaded two down the 3-1 pitch swing and a fly Ball Deep left field hooking toward the corner and it's going to go foul absolutely destroyed a fan bucket of popcorn as it landed into the seats all the way in the left field Corner we're up behind the plate we could see the popcorn flying in the air and it's a near Miss for Ernie Clement as well at a grand slam and you can hear the fans reaction too they might have been louder on that on that fan losing to popcorn than if Ernie CL hit a grand slam right there well the guy went up with both hands to catch it with the bucket in his right hand just not paying enough attention to to what's going on Full Count two outs Runners will have the head starts from every base the pitch to Clement swing and a bouncer foul would have been Ball Four it was below the Zone but Ernie in swing mode Taps it off to the left yeah he's still protecting right there it wasn't a wasn't a terrible pitch from Tyler Anderson a cutter down and in just below that Strike Zone a good good protection swing from Ernie Clement runners go back to their bases Barger on third Guerrero on second Kirk on first one- nothing and the 3-2 to Clement popped up right side foul slicing and that will head out of play hits the netting just above the first base dugout are really driving the pitch count up of Tyler Anderson over 60 here with two outs in the third here's the eighth pitch of the plate appearance to Ernie Clement swing in a popup foul Third Base side behind the plate oh hoppy moving toward the third basee Dugout but that just gets it's out of play bouncing on the concrete just beside the third base Dugout it looked like Brandon jury had a beat on it just for a second Logan o hopp looked like he had a beat on it at as well and the wind just kept pushing it and pushing it and pushing it and it ended up just going over that netting Ernie was kind of hunched over staring at it waiting to see if it would get out of play and it did so he continues to work here in the third another pitch where all three runners will have a head start Anderson kicks and fires and Clement pops this one up into Fair territory stonic thei baseman on the right center field Turf makes a two-handed catch and ends the inning Blue Jay score one run on one hit three walks in the inning and three left on base it's one- nothing Toronto after three you're listening to Blue Jays baseball today's baseball odds and find out why it's never ordinary at bet 365 19 plus play responsibly Ontario only Taylor Ward back up to the plate for the Angels second time through now for Kevin gsmid who pitches in the top of the fourth inning one- nothing Toronto and the pitch home Ward takes a fast ball for strike one nine up nine Downs so far for Kevin Gosman three strikeouts got Ward to fly out in the first a0 one pitch off the plate away threw the slider for one of the first times today hasn't thrown in a ton yet it's one and one Cosman bouncing on that front left foot comes still in the one-1 hit in the air sends low peredo back to the wall leaping up and it bounces off the wall and rolls away from the center fielder W around second he's trying for third he'll get there with a slide it's a leadoff triple for Taylor Ward well it looked like Joey lero had that ball in his glove and then crashed into that TD sign out there in right center and it ended up coming out of his glove Addison Barger runs over and picks that thing up but Taylor Ward ends up with a triple looked like it just hit the top of the glove of L peredo as he went back into the wall almost brought it in but instead it's the first Angels hit of the day and they're 90 ft away from tying this game up one- nothing Blue Jays infield in Zack Neto swings at the first pitch and it's a soft liner to left that'll get down for a base hit and Ward jogs home RBI sing s Le Zack Netto and it's 1-1 in the top of the fourth actually not a bad pitch right there Zack Netto does a good job just musing that thing in front of Davis Schneider and left field a sinker in on the hands blew him up and I think he just got lucky there with that one for Netto his 64th RBI of the Season really impressive campaign for the 23-year-old shortstop he's the RBI leader on this Angels team Kevin polar up now no nobody out runner on First and the first pitch is called Low I believe it looked pretty good but it's one and0 the interesting thing about that approach is the infield was in Toronto had the infield in you could tell he was really trying to lift that baseball that's what you want to do when the infields in nto now leaning towards second and the one to Polar called strike yeah cuz Gosman on the other hand he threw the Sinker he was was trying to get nto to hit something down into the ground hopefully at one of his infielders 1-1 swing and a Fly ball slicing toward foul territory right field and that's going to get out of play and we actually we actually talked about that earlier on in the ball game you asked me when do you want to throw that Sinker that situation right there is a perfect example Kevin Gosman threw the Sinker he didn't quite get it down enough I think if he gets it down in the The Zone a little bit lower in the zone nto would have hit a ground ball potentially at Short Stop and they would have stopped Taylor Ward from scoring instead though Ward came in on the RBI single and it's 1-1 no outs top of the fourth Gosman rocks and delivers swinging a bouncer foul left side polar steps out of the dirt Circle for a sec and P the next pitch these two have seen each other a lot 40 at bats Kevin polar has had against Kevin Gosman by far the most of any angel in the lineup today onew Neto takes off from first swing in a foul ball and Neto will have to retreat as Polar hit it over the netting into the seats I couldn't imagine facing somebody 40 times I was a reliever for most of my career so I don't really get those those many chances to to face up the same batter but what do you do I mean that batter knows every single pitch that you throw although he is a very different guy probably than than the guy that polar saw as a Baltimore orial as Polar hits the onew foul again to the right still one and two although if you watch this at bad Kevin PO is fouling off some tough pitches that one was a little more center cut but it looks like a guy who's seen Kevin Gosman work before yeah I mean that the velocity is a little bit down he's definitely more of a pitcher now than he used to be obviously when he was with Baltimore he was a little bit more of a thrower High Velocity guy onew pitch swing in a Miss strike three gets him to chase the fast ball away and for the second time today gsman Strikes Out Po and Kevin polar now has struck out six straight at bats he is really going through it right now as not been his best series and what could be his final series at Rogers Center one out now in this inning after the back-to-back base hits played to run throw over to First and Zack Netto Dives back in safely Joe Adell up to the plate for the Angels we'll take a sec we'll take a look at the other toown scoreboard in a sec as well and the Blue Jays look like they're going to think about reviewing this they are the throw over to first it was a close dive back by nto and the call was safe on the field but Toronto wants to challenge what did you think Chris well I saw the the the replay immediately it definitely the safe call at first base it definitely looks like they may have gotten him but again we go back to the the fact that the call in the field is safe is there definitive evidence in this replay I tend to say no and I think the call is going to stand I mean what do you what do you think you just saw it it's really close the angle that we're looking at right now is almost shot from the first base Dugout out toward left center field and you can't exactly tell when the sliding Mitten gets back into the bag but it was definitely close call on the field of course like Chris said is safe so for now Netto is still at first with one out should they overturn this though that would be big for Gosman it would be two outs and the base is empty yeah as soon as Vlad put the tag on Netto you can see him quickly spin around and turn to John Schneider and kind of motion after review the call stands the runner safe Toronto loses this challenge I think you were on it just a little bit too close to call there it's kind of an odd one if I'm John Schneider I'm probably not reviewing that call just because it's so close and and like we've seen so many times this season when the call in the field is safe and the and the the evidence really isn't great they're not going to overturn it although project for me going forward a little bit I will say John Shiner never sees the review right so I'm going to try and get into the intricacies over the next couple weeks of who makes those decisions first pitch to Joe Adell low ball one obviously I don't think but I don't know Kilim is on the phone with someone in the video room so John schiner obviously ultimately makes the decision but only based off the confidence of what other people are saying to him he never looks at it one oh Runner takes off from first swing and a miss and the ball pops out of the bare hand of Kirk so no throw Netto swipes his 23rd bag of the year and there's a runner on second now with one out if Kirk didn't Bobble that baseball I think they would have had a pretty good chance at Netto Gosman was quick to the plate it was an easy pitch to throw on I think Alejandro Kirk tried to be a little bit too quick and just bobbled that baseball nto stands at second base 1-1 count after the swing and miss the pitch low two and one a run in this inning for the angels on two hits 1-1 ball game Zack Netto at second base being held close by the second baseman will Wagner turn and throw over to first n back standing do you know and and and there was no replay when I was when I was playing so I don't know like you said the intricacies of it but does Gil Kim say to John Schneider it's really close what do you think like something like that right this is part of my project I'm going to find out oh so you don't even know that I don't know well that's what I'm trying to find out 2-1 swing and a miss two and two I'm not getting fired over this what do you think cuz I don't know gilim could just be getting a straight yes or no right right from someone in another room two two swing and a miss strike three gets him on the splitter two down pretty good split finger right there he threw a couple of good fast balls and then he threw that split finger in on the hands and it kind of dipped underneath the bat of Joe Adell another good split finger he is he is really on point today fifth strikeout for gsman trying to get through the fourth inning here with just one run allowed batter in his way is the left-handed hitter Mickey monia pitch from Gosman moniac shows bunt and Pops it up foul into the netting behind the plate o and [Music] one for Mickey moniac he started game one of this series in center field but was hit by a pitch from Ryan Yarbro kind of on the underside of the elbow on his left arm 01 swing and a foul ball hit High into the seats left side nothing in two that hit by pitch caused moniac to leave the game right after that offensive inning he could still see stitches visible on his arm the next day sat out yesterday but now back in for the Halos today 02 called strike through gets him with the splitter on the outside corner and after giving up the two hits in a run to start the frame three straight strikeouts for Kevin Gosman to keep us tied 1-1 middle of the fourth you're listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your the bottom of the fourth inning will Wagner Leo Jimenez and Davis Schneider scheduled to hit for the Blue Jays against Lefty Tyler Anderson the pitch to Wagner fast ball strike one Wagner 11 for 33 A 333 average in now 11 Major League games 01 check swing called strike on a pitch that looked inside nothing in two and you could actually hear Tyler Anderson Tyler Anderson saying yeah he did making the call himself himself out there on that pitching mound although I believe Gabe Morales called it a called strike and not a swinging strike the 02 is hooked on the ground to First picked up by kavadis he'll race the first base and step on it there one out let's go to the out of town scoreboard brought to you by St Louis barring Grill devilishly good since Toronto first raised the trophy in 92 rib sanity is on now until September 8th all you can eat ribs for just 2799 visit St Louis wis.com for more details always devilishly good before we look around baseball here in Toronto it's 1-1 blue jays and Angels base is empty one out bottom of the fourth Tyler Anderson brings the glove up to his face winds and deals to Leo Jimenez high ball one looking around the major leagues Boston Red Sox off to a quick start against the Arizona Diamondbacks 4 nothing the Red Sox lead 10 oh swing and a one hopper to third off the glove of Drury and into left field Jimenez around first ends up going back to the bag and I think that'll go down as a single for Leo Jimenez yeah I think that'll be a a single that was a tough play for Brandon jury over there at third base a hanging change up Leo Jimenez rips it on a one half one hop just past jury at third base pretty good swing right there from Leo Jimenez second hit of the day for the Blue Jays we've had good production so far today from the bottom third of the order including Davis Schneider who bats now Schneider with a walk and a run in the third first pitch from Anderson is hammered foul down the left field line and into the Press Box in the left field Corner o and one Anderson leaning forward dangling his left arm sets at his chest a look at jenez and the 01 swing in a liner caught at Short by Netto rifle throw to first bounces away and Jimenez gets up and races for second and he'll get there without a throw nto trying to double off him menz ends up throwing it away E6 and the Blue Jays get a runner in scoring position yeah nto I I like the thought I just I just think that he rushed that throw didn't really have a good grip on that baseball trying to get Lao running back to first base it actually hit Lao in the hamstring and bounced away now the Blue Jays have a runner in scoring position with two outs in this inning and Addison Barger stepping up to the plate who has one of the two Toronto hits line the ball to center field last inning left on left the pitch home check swing called strike 0 and one Elsewhere on the St Louis bar in girl out of town scoreboard 4-2 the Yankees are leading the Rockies in the fourth in the Bronx and Aaron judge has left the yard for his 50th Homer of the Season 01 swing and a miss and the back swing hit oh hoppy The Catcher in the head Barger checking on him it's 0 and2 I'm sure a lot of people are wondering and asking themselves why do they keep pitching to Aaron judge pretty good question although it's cuz Juan sto's on first every time they try to do it so they they know where to put him 02 swing in a chopper foul judge with that home run now has 350 Homer Seasons a feat that a small handful of major leakers have ever pulled off you're looking at at Ruth Sosa Maguire Alex Rodriguez and Aaron judge next pitch to Barger is hit on a hop to short picked up by Netto throws overhand to First and ends the inning a hit for the Blue Jays an error but no down the left field line hooking foul oh hoppy thought he got it for a second I don't blame him he missed a home run by maybe 10 ft it almost hit that popcorn guy too the guy that lost his popcorn earlier in the ball game almost got another baseball the good thing is he really had no more popcorn to spill I mean you you couldn't have spilled more popcorn like a comedic amount of popcorn was spilled the first time Gosman ahead nothing and two got happy to bounce out to Third and the second two strike pitch inside ball one now the onew oh happppy pops it up a mile high behind the first baseman Guerrero who backs up onto the turf and makes the catch kind of angling his body diagonally to avoid the sun yeah that's a tough play but a guy that's made that play a lot looking at the sun he really wasn't even using his bare hand or his glove to Shield his eyes I was pretty surprised looking directly at that sun makes an easy play down that right field line sunglasses on for Guerrero flip them up into non sunglass mode he actually has the old school flip on yeah probably the same ones as Dad War well it's like the mustaches you know it takes a certain amount of time and then everything comes back in style eventually pitch to Brandon Drury check swing on a pitch low appeal to first he did go around it's 0 and one Drury the former blue jay stepping up 0 for one today with a strikeout looking oh1 swing and a bouncer foul nothing in two Blue Jays acquired Drury in 2018 when they traded jpp over to the Yankees and got Drury and Billy mckin in exchange he played a little bit in 18 but was the blue jay's main third baseman for much of 2019 played a handful of games in 2020 02 swing in a Miss strike three 97 just above the zone and the seventh strikeout for gsman today yeah his fast ball is really good today not just the V the location Alejandro Kirk wanted that thing just above the strike zone and Kevin Gosman delivered an elevated fastball blowing it by Drury so two down now nobody on and Niko kavadis the number eight hitter is up left-handed hitter Stands Tall almost still like a statue at the plate pitch from gsman fouled off the m Mas of Kirk going one quick peek at the St Louis bar in grill out of town scoreboard Red Sox were up for nothing on the Diamond Backs going into the fifth but Arizona put up three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it all new Serius xmf sportset radio network bottom of the fifth inning 1-1 angels and blue jays thanks so much for joining us on a sunny day at Rogers Center the top of the order hits for the Blue Jays Tyler Anderson pitches to Springer who takes strike one welcome to the timbermart broadcast Booth I'm Ben Schulman to my left is Chris Laro the wind and the 01 in the dirt feels like if the Blue Jays are going to get to Anderson this might be the time two hits for Toronto and one run so far but they have Springer low peredo and Guerrero coming up for the third time in the game one-1 pitch swing and a ground ball foul one and two yeah and Tyler Anderson really hasn't looked like himself he's been really consistent all season long but the last two starts he's been erratic and then today he's been extremely erratic three three walks one of those intentionally to Vlad but still he's been spraying those pitches all around the strike zone onew down and in two balls and two strikes Lefty's 80th pitch of the day swing and a Fly ball hit very high but way off to the right foul that'll drop into the deep reaches of the 100 level still two and two [Music] another two- two pitch broken bat liner to left field down for a base hit ball lands in left the barrel slams off The netting behind home plate and Falls near the on Deck Circle but George Springer will take it it's a lead off single Tyler Anderson really hesitated with that leg lift kind of held it paused at the top thought that that might mess with George Springer's timing but George Springer drills that thing to the left field shatters that bat [Music] that's the first hit today by a blue jay in the top six of their order only three hits for Toronto the previous two had come from seven through nine pitch to Joey low peredo called strike Low peredo batting in the top thir of the order for the first time since August 6th hitting second today with Dalton varo having a day off 01 swing and a miss got him out in front on the Sinker it's nothing in two and this is where I Envision low pero probably second even even a a leadoff hitter he's such a good athlete that he's almost necessary at the top of this lineup I love low pero I love the profile and most importantly I love the athleticism 0 for one today with a walk the 02 down on the away ball one he has been so so good recently for the Blue Jays as Joey ler fedo 12 for 27 with seven extra base hits in the last eight games that includes a pair of homers and a pair of triples onew swing and a miss strike three went back to that Sinker again yeah it was a it it was a good Sinker again he dropped that arm angle kind of dipped underneath the bat of Joey LFO pretty good pitch right there Vladimir Guerrero Jr coming up now for the Blue Jays one out runner on first one-1 ball game bottom of the fifth Vlad for one popped out in the first and was intentionally walked in the third takes the first pitch down low ball one action in the bullpen in right field veteran Hunter Strickland is warming up right now for the Angels Tyler Anderson staring at Springer kicks and delivers Guerrero takes inside ball two now the 2-0 on the outside corner strike one blad didn't like that call but that is such a good pitch you've heard me talk about that so often this season a two change up is the best pitch in baseball especially if you have confidence in it 2-1 swing in a Miss threw a really good change there started at the knees and bounced behind the plate it's two and [Music] two Guerrero has surpassed his home run total from last year when he hit his 27th yesterday throw over to First Springer gets back and it looks like unless something goes way left that Guerrero will have his third 30 Homer season in the last four years two two swing in a fly Ball Deep left field polar racing back that one's off the wall and bouncing into the left center field Gap Springer getting the way of around third he'll come in to score it's an RBI double for vadir Guerrero Jr and the Blue Jays Take the Lead back two to one and that just shows just how strong Vladimir Guerrero Jr is he was way out in front of that change up kept the barrel back and just flipped it and he almost got it out of here hitting it off that wall in left field it's a pretty incredible swing right there way out in front of that change up but but was still able to get it that deep he has been the absolute driver of this offense and that continues today Guerrero on second Alejandro Kirk up who drove in the first blue J run first pitch is hit in the air left field line and deep but foul speaking of Vlad matching some previous year's numbers that double was his 35th of the Season which matches the most he's ever hit in a season he hit 35 doubles in 2022 01 High one ball and one strike Guerrero peing behind him as he leads off second stonic the second baseman tapping his glove 1-1 to Kirk in the dirt ball two Tyler Anderson is now on 93 pitches I would imagine his day is almost done with Hunter Strickland out there in that Bullpen and right field 93 was the exact number of pitches that Anderson threw in his last start trying to get through five here the pitch Kirk takes up top ball three 2-1 Blue Jays one out bottom of the fifth inning Guerrero on second after the RBI double and the 3-1 pitch to Alejandro Kirk swing and a miss threw another good change up in a fast ball count and it's three and two yeah it's almost like when Tyler Anderson is behind you can almost expect that change up you can expect the cutter in on the hands just refuses to give in and throw a fast ball in a count like that Lefty set and the pitch swing and a roller to third picked up by Brandon Drury he Peaks at Guerrero and throws over to first two outs this injury report is brought to you by bergmanis Pereira personal injury lawyers if life has thrown you a curveball and you're striking out with your insurance company get ahead of the count call bermis pra personal injury lawyers you thing if you missed it from earlier in the week is coming up tomorrow when the Blue Jays are in Boston Bo bashet will rejoin the team he will not be active but bashet will return from Florida to be with the team to get more into his routine now and start to rehab under a bit more of a microscope of the Blue Jays which signals that he's getting closer to a rehab appearance and then potentially returning to the Blue Jays for the last couple weeks so that's the main injury update right now Ron Washington went out to talk to Tyler Anderson long visit decides not to pull his starter he's always keeping us on our toes is Ron Washington who will walk back to the mound well like I said yesterday Ron Washington needs a pitch count he needs hischer a sorry a pitch timer he needs a he needs a uh a visit timer it is funny if all the things that have timers that doesn't the it's just the um walking out there yeah to decide when the meeting is over meeting is done now Ernie Clement batting and the pitch is line to right field Adele backing up moving to the corner makes the catch and ends the inning the Blue Jays get one on two hits it's an RBI double from Vladimir Guerrero Jr that gives Toronto Jays up 2-1 thanks to Vladimir Guerrero Jr's RBI double 10 fast ball in there strike one Kevin Gosman just threw his 70th pitch of the ball game 50 strikes pretty good ratio that's why his pitch count is so low as he starts the sixth inning 1-1 pitch outside two and one [Music] hasn't been any action in the Blue Jays pen at any point today Angels did have guys warming up last inning 2-1 pitch from Gosman on the outer third strike two stepanic asks for time steps out and now right back in 22 swing and a soft roller to Second picked up by Wagner he'll toss it to first one out on the St Louis bar and grill out of town scoreboard the Diamondbacks have come all the way back to take the lead over the Red Sox who at one point we're leading 4 nothing but now Arizona has a 6-4 lead on Boston that three-run fifth and then in the sixth aeno Suarez with a three-run homer makes it 6-4 Arizona over Boston first pitch to Taylor Ward a career Angel takes strike one also the Rockies are threatening a come back on the Yankees they were down 4-1 it's now 43 in the fifth in the Bronx 01 Ward takes low alliver out of town scores brought to you again by St Louis Bar and Grill go been set the one-1 bounced foul Third Base side toward the Dugout One and Two infield playing to the pull for the right-handed hitter one-w pitch swing in a Miss strike three slider at the top of the Zone gets Ward and for Gosman strikeout number eight yeah a little bit of a spinner I'm I'm I'm almost certain that that's not where Kevin Gosman wanted to throw that pitch was a backup slider probably wanted that down and away but pretty good result if you're Kevin Gosman keeping that pitch count down in another strike out Gosman has now retired the last eight he's faced here's Zack Netto the pitch swing and a miss strike one Netto one for two today knocked in the lone Angels run on his RBI single in the fourth it's 2-1 Blue Jays top of the six two out SPAC is empty the pitch swing in a high popup just behind the shortstop him menz he backs up throws his arms in the air to call for it and makes the catch on the turf to end the inning nine in a row retired by Kevin Gosman who's allowed only one run in six you back to Rogers Center for the bottom of the sixth inning 2-1 Blue Jays over the angels and it's Hunter Strickland on the mound now the right-hander takes over for LA ending the start of Tyler Anderson [Music] Strickland enters to face 678 in the blue J order will Wagner Lao Jimenez and Davis Schneider righty set from the stretch the pitch Wagner takes up top ball one welcome to the Timber Mart broadcast Booth I'm Ben scholman to my left Chris Laro show Ali our host Nick Blackmore our producer Andrew Adams Tom young our technical directors 10 in there strike one 58th appearance of the year for Hunter Strickland three and a half AR righ is 1-1 slider in there for strike two sliders the lead pitch for Strickland throws it almost half the time for seamer Sinker cutter and change as well is one-w offering check swing fast ball was high appeal to third no swing says dou Doug edings and it's two balls and two strikes it's interesting that he throws that slider so often because he still has a pretty solid fast ball 35 years old 95 to 97 mph his 2-2 in the dirt with the slider ball [Music] three Strickland's been around for a while now debuted for the 2014 Giants that ended up winning the World Series in pitch for San Francisco for a number of years 3-2 swing in a popup sprayed to the left side and into the seats foul and if you don't remember Hunter Strickland I'm sure you'll remember when he faced off with Bryce Harper I was going to say it's actually the the main thing that comes to my mind is when he fought Bryce har in 2017 I believe Harper threw his helmet at Strickland charge in the mound 3-2 swinging a foul off to the left so Hunter Strickland came up with the Pirates and I remember him in the waight room when I was there as well and I don't know him at all but he was in I think he was in high a or double A when I was when I was there and all I remember is that he would squat like 550 lb so when they squared off 32 pitch lined foul still three and two I immediately medely thought oh Bryce is messing with the wrong dude Bryce I think if Bryce is is winning stuff like that it's a little more on on Spirit you know I don't think that he's stepping up with the uh the better measurables now another 3-2 from stricklin outside Ball Four pretty good ab right there for will Wagner hasn't had his best series but he works a nine pitch walk to start this inning yeah well he's a pro he knows exactly what he's doing up there he has the approach and yes he might not get a base hit every single time up but he's going to give you a good at bat a lot like Spencer Horwitz Wagner on first fifth walk that the Blue Jays have taken today and now Leo Jimenez up Strickland's pitch slider hit in the air down the right field line long run Joe Adell nearing the corner reaches out and makes the catch in foul territory tagging from first Wagner will advance to second with a head first ey smart play by Will Wagner saw Adele sprinting into the corner and Adell caught it his momentum carried him into the sidewall so Wagner takes 90 ft yeah that was a great a great heads up play from will Wagner but a pretty good throw from Joe Adell too deep in that corner almost got Wagner at second base diving head first they rulle that that was actually caught in Fair territory for those who might be scoring at home and it looks like the blue J here are going to go with a pinch hitter a late introduction to the new batter Spencer Horwitz who comes on now in replacement of David Schneider to get that platoon Advantage left-handed batter now against the righty reliever in Hunter Strickland yeah I mean this is kind of a no-brainer it's just a better matchup Spencer horo it's a left-handed hitter against the right-handed throwing Hunter Strickland would have been a tough match up for David Schneider runner on second one out Strickland pitch home fast ball outside ball [Music] one orwitz enters this ball game with a 261 average high 700s on base plus slugging 10 check swing pitch inside appeal to third no swing says Doug edings two and0 single likely extends the blue jay lead decent speed on second and will Wagner 2- swing in a high popup Third Base side shortstop Netto way out into left field called off there by Kevin po who brings it in for the second out well I'll tell you what if Kevin polar calls you off you get out of the way Zach Netto put on the brakes and got out of there quickly as soon as Kevin polar started yelling I got it I got it pretty good play from Neta po very comfortable in that left field that's where he came up as a blue J played all of his 2013 appearances in left field moved to center field mid 2014 pitch to Addison Barger with two outs and he hammers it deep to right field Adele Turning Around see you later second home run of the series for Addison Barger Blue Jays take a 4-1 lead just a hanging slider from Hunter Strickland Addison Barger has been so good recently hitting hanging pitches hit a hanging change up the other night for a game winner and then no different there that hanging change up just absolutely drills it over the bullpen in right field fifth home run of the season for Barger and now the Blue Jays extend their Homer streak to 14 straight games with a home run no one else entered today with more than seven games in a row George Springer back up checks his swing on a pitch away appeal to first he did not swing it's one and0 seems like he's getting pretty comfy putting on that home run jacket he is he is I like that 1 off the plate away two and know I asked him about his home run pimping skills or lack thereof today he told me he's never really done it he's not sure that he would like doing it anyway not really his style but he said if he did do it he would be bad at it anyway 20 pitch swinging a miss two and one I wonder if it if if that comes naturally or if that's a if that's something that you can practice in your hotel room in front of that tall mirror I don't know I was never a home run hit or what I was in college so I don't know either 2-1 pitch is hit in the air right center field and deep going back to the track Joe Adell settles up and makes the catch to end the inning Blue Jays add to their lead two runs on one hit the walk and then the big blast by Addison Barger has the score at 4-1 Toronto after six you're listening to Blue Jays baseball Kevin Gosman gets a swing and a miss by Kevin parlar 0 and one blue jays just doubled their run total on Addison Burgers two run Homer 01 swing and a miss nothing in two and Chris just stringing hits together is still a big part of baseball walking stealing bases hitting doubles but boy does it look a lot easier to score runs when you hit balls out of the yard yeah baseball's fun when you're hitting homers when you're stealing bags and when you're hitting triples those are probably the three most exciting things in all of baseball Blue Jays with home runs now in 14 straight 02 in the dirt one ball and two strikes tied now for the sixth longest streak in Blue Jay's franchise history last time they had a streak this long was 2019 did it in 15 straight games surprisingly The Donaldson Bautista and Carion teams never had a streak like this as Polar who was obviously a part of those teams hits it foul to the right still one and two cl's down in this count he's struck out six straight times he's looking it's looking like he's about to get his seven gosman's onew swing and bounce foul to the [Music] [Music] left po announcing in early July that likely this will be his final season didn't totally close the door onew swing and a pop up to the right into the seats fouled parar did reach 10 years of service time in the major leagues of this year year for any player that's a pretty big accomplishment for a 30second rounder even more so onew swing in a popup middle of the diamond will Wagner the second baseman racing in makes the catch and there's one out Lao Jimenez crossed over him they almost collided it is Leo's Authority but also Wagner was camped under that in about a second yeah the popup was on the second base side of the bag that doesn't really matter like you said the shortstop is the guy out there that makes all final decisions but will Wagner was camped underneath that baseball Leo H menz I thought for a split second would run into will Wagner luckily he didn't first pitch to Joe Adell called strike one those two actually haven't played together much at all because Wagner got to Buffalo after Lao was called up Lao did have that little spell that his knee was a bit sore to as the next pitch misses down in the way one ball one strike to Adele so they're probably still feeling each other out a little bit Kevin Gosman approaching 90 pitches one out top of the seventh his 1-1 swing and a miss one and two still has 95 yeah we've seen we've seen him carry that vlo deep into ball games we've seen a lot of 97s in the six seventh inning I mean today is no different that that fast ball is alive right now now through the Zone onew misses low with the splitter his velocity is a little bit up today about half a mile per hour above average that's on his fast balls way up on his splitter 22 swing in a Miss strike three gets him to go around on a splitter in the dirt Kirk applies the tag and that's gosman's ninth strike out yeah yes yes I'm I'm impressed with the today I'm impressed with the the command and the location of that fast ball but I'm most impressed with the split finger I think today is his best day this season we've seen that thing kind of pretty erratic in terms of v in terms of movement but today it's kind of all coming together with both of those things gosin now faces Mickey moniac first pitch foul tipped 0 and one Cosman today is getting slightly better than average vertical break on his splitter oh one pitch cut on and Miss backto back fast balls demoniac and quickly it's nothing in two so I'm I'm right with my assessment there you go Cosman looking for a 10th strike out of the day kicks and delivers swing in a Miss strike three 96 mph fast ball gets moniac it's double digit strikeouts for gsman and seven of the seventh inning in downtown Toronto meet of the blue J order coming up Joey L perfo Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Alejandro Kirk will bat for the Blue Jays thank you so much for joining us today sunny beautiful day in downtown Toronto and it's been a good one for the Blue Jays so far it's blue jays for Angels one new pitcher into the game is the Lefty relever Matt Moore he's on for the first time in the series his to Joey L peredo hit back foul 0 and one long bearded Lefty Moore is pitching for the 51st time this season ER in the high fours 01 L perfo takes a heater down the middle strike two and Tommy Nance is now warming up in that blue jays Bullpen out in left field I don't know if that means that Kevin Gosman is done for the day he's at 94 pitches but it definitely means that he's pretty close 02 pitch way up and in ball one more there missed with the curveball he throws a for seamer a change up and a curve Lefty kicks delivers and low peredo chops the curveball foul to the right still one and two more hunched over kicks and delivers and L perfo laces the ball foul Over The netting into the seats on the same Le bar and grill out of town scoreboard coming up later today Orioles stay tuned in on the sports at radio network Sunday Night Baseball will play that game going at 710 Eastern more kicks and delivers Guerrero takes in the dirt ball two another big day for Vlad in just a huge couple months for the right-handed hitter today he's got a double and a walk plus an RBI 2-1 pitch outside ball three Guerrero entered today with 15% of the Blue Jays hits on the entire season only Bobby wit Jr has a higher portion of his team's hits wit has 16% of the Royals hits and vlad's going to take a second intentional walk of the day down 3-1 in the count Ron Washington doesn't want to take any chances that's the third time he's been intentionally walked in the series nobody on one out in the inning you're down by three I don't really understand that logic I know that Ron Washington is has been around the game a long time and and I tend to agree with most everything he does but I just don't understand that first pitch to Alejandro Kirk up high ball one why don't you just throw a pitch maybe maybe a a a a pitch down in the strike zone maybe out of the strike zone see if he gets himself out next pitch is inside two and0 and if he doesn't offer at it he walks anyways that's the I just don't understand the logic of giving somebody a free bag with nobody on base Kirk Taps the plate one out runner on first 4-1 Blue Jays bottom of the seven The 2-0 Swinging a chop back [Music] foul I'll hit you with the Devil's Advocate just try just to try to get in the head of Ron Wasington Matt Moore has given up as a reliever 10 home runs this year and maybe there isn't the trust there to even deliver that kind of intentional ball Kirk swings at the 2-1 hammers it out to left H going back he's run out of room two run Homer Alejandro Kirk in the blue J have blown it open it's 61 Toronto man do I love that you intentionally walk one of the best hitters in baseball to get to Alejandro Kirk and he absolutely smashes a home run makes you pay for that for that intentional walk that's got to feel good for him what were you saying Ben well I was saying that Matt Moore gives up a lot of home runs it just turns out that doesn't wash away if you walk one guy you still might give up a lot of home runs to another guy but yeah it's a tough one for me 61 Blue Jays over the angels and a foul tip on the first swing by Ernie Clement 0 and one for Alejandro Kirk that's his fifth home run of the season third home run in this month had two homers going into August and has more than doubled his season [Music] total Logan hopp is going to go out to the mound and talk to Matt Moore maybe seeing something out of Moore that he doesn't like even though he got a swinging strike off Ernie Clement on the first pitch he threw yeah this is kind of a strange one ahead in the count 0 and one Logan ohappy goes out there to talk to M more I couldn't imagine what they're talking about maybe you're right maybe he saw something that he didn't like maybe he's just saying hey calm down I don't know more the veteran for former starter for the Rays now reliever for the Angels pitches home and misses outside one and one blue jays extended the home run streak but why not add on they've been the best home run hitting team in baseball over the last couple weeks Clement again takes outside two and one if you go back to August 11th the Blue Jays have more home runs now 26 and a higher slugging percentage now over 500 they have more of that than anyone in baseball CL swings at the 2-1 hits it back foul two and two and now Mike frostad the trainer and Ron Washington are going to go out to the mound and this starts to color in the lines of maybe what Logan ohappy was doing yeah something might not be right right now with Matt Mo yeah obviously Logan o hoppy saw something Ron Washington is out with his training staff everybody's around him and I think you hit the nail on the head you you said that Logan a hoppy saw something that he didn't like and Ron Washington is is out there trying to figure it out as well Ryan zephan right now is warming up in the right field pen for the Angels potentially to make his debut and the home plate umpire Gabe Morales is pointing out toward right field I think indicating that they're going to have to make a pitching change well Matt Moore isn't coming off the field yet he's probably fighting to stay out there but they're going to take him out of this ball game so more out of the game presumably for health related reasons in the middle of a 2-2 count against ery Clement that means it's a pitching change Ryan zephron coming on and let's go over to today's host here show Ali thank you very much guys and before we check the out of town scoreboard brought to you by St Louis Bar and Grill don't forget we do have Jace talk I have a solo edition of the postgame show just me so I will take your calls and text after the final out 590590 name and location that is the people's text line we can talk about alandro Kirk we can talk about certainly Addison Barger get to Vladimir Guerrero Jr still lots to come so we'll have Jayce talk once this game is in the books all right let's check the out of town scoreboard brought to you by St Louis Bar and Grill and why don't we start in the NFL some preseason action going on right now the Titans are up 13-10 on the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans lots of starters playing in that game including Calvin Ridley and Tony Pard for the Titans we'll also have Cardinals at Broncos at 4:30 Eastern so that's in just under an hour uh the last preseason game for any teams before the season gets underway next Thursday it'll be Patriots at commanders which goes 8 8 Eastern 5 Pacific we're still waiting on a few starting quarterback decisions including for those Patriots who will play tonight but Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin saying yesterday he's also not ready to make his decision on the starting quarterback the candidates are Russell Wilson and Justin Fields Tomlin saying he'll decide between Wilson and Fields by the end of the work week which sounds pretty familiar uh I know people are fans of footy we had the football updates here are some footy updates from the other side of the Atlantic lots of finals from the Premier League earlier today AFC burnmouth and Newcastle played to a 1-1 draw Chelsea laying the beat down on the Wolves Chelsea winning 6-2 and Liverpool blanking brenford 2 N from yesterday West H blanked Crystal Palace 2-0 Fulham beat Lester City 2 to1 Man City thumping the recently promoted IP switch 4 to1 Nottingham Forest edging Southampton 1 n and Tottenham breezing by Everton 4-0 the last result as well Brighton beating Manu 21 the final score there I thought this was pretty cool a jersey worn by Babe Ruth has sold for a record-breaking sum it's the Jersey he wore when he famously called his shot during the 1932 World Series sold for 24.12 million at auction becoming the most expensive item of sports memorabilia ever sold at auction the BBC says the sale dwarfs the previous record song 12.6 million paid in 2022 for a 1952 pops baseball card featuring Mickey Mantle that's a quick check of the St Louis bar girl out of town scoreboard back to the action here's Ben shman and Chris Laro thank you show Ryan zephron is on for his major league debut and he starts in a 2-2 count against dernie Clement one out right-hander kicks and delivers and Clement swings and misses strike three so one pitch and a strike out for zephron and now two outs in the bottom of the seven yeah he's got some he's got some good V that last fast ball 98 up above the strike zone Z John acquired at the deadline from Boston by the angels in the same trade that brought Nik kavadas and two other prospects over Luis Garcia the reliever went the other way two outs now and the righty deals to will Wagner inside ball one I have to say though if there's a piece of baseball memorabilia that I would want it's probably that Jersey the bayu Jersey it is a good one is a good one 1 outside 2 and0 zepher John in the miners this year 30 appearances of 333 erra was a little bit up and down in terms of his performance with triple A Worcester in the Red Sox system but since the trade was really good with the Salt Lake Bees in the angel system 2 is ripped at and missed two and one [Applause] and while he was in Worcester you could see the the reason for the high erra he walked 17 guys in just over 24 Innings throws a hard fast ball a cutter and a sweeper two one hit foul off to the left another 98 at the top of the zone and it's two and two yeah but you got to you got to love the V though 98 mph life through the zone you can fix the command issues but you can't can't get a fast ball like that 2 two check swing he went around strike three Wagner Strikes Out Zephyr John strikes out a pair in his major league debut and walks off the mound as we go to the eighth inning Blue Jays had two in the frame on the Alejandro Kirk Homer and leads 6 to one as we go to the E Tommy Nance on the mound next you're listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rust Control Center year long is SiriusXM NBA radio channel 86 and the SiriusXM app just search NBA radio radio [Music] network welcome back to Rogers Center for the top of the eighth inning the Blue Jays leading the Angels 6 to one I'm Ben Schulman alongside Chris Laro new pitcher for the Blue Jays is the righty Tommy Nance first reliever out of John Schneider's P he kicks and delivers Logan ohappy swings and misses strike one second appearance of the series for Nance pitched at the end of game one of this series on Thursday a one swing and a foul ball nothing and two that outing had ups and downs Nance struck out the side in the eighth inning in that one came out for the ninth got two outs pretty quickly but then allowed a double a walk and a home run before closing out the win 02 missed up top and that outing certainly doesn't take away from the stuff from the the way I feel about him yes he gave up a three-run home run and yes he still does have a small sample size but he's got a very good fast ball and an incredible slider one two swing in a Miss strike three put the slider P Logan o hoppy and a strikeout for the first out of the e that's what you have to do as a reliever I know he was disappointed that he gave up that three-run home run it really inflated that erra but you have to kind of Turn the Page forget about that and come out today and dominate eighth appearance as a blue jay for Nance four earned runs and now eight and two3 innings Brandon Drury up right on right the pitch from Nance high ball one Kevin Gosman with a great day today his start done after seven Innings gives up only two hits and one run did not walk a batter and struck out 10 1 called strike one and one and realistically he could have come out for the eighth inning I mean we've seen him throw 110 pitches 115 pitches this year only 94 pitches today for Gosman 1- Miss is way up and in Drury ducking out of the way stumbles back in somersaults two and one yeah on that Gosman note you know I think if it's a different situation if their wins and losses are flipped and they're in a race you probably do see them come back out but I wouldn't be shocked of over the last couple weeks of the Season Blue Jays pitchers have a bit of a scaling back of workload especially some of the veterans 2-1 bounce foul two and two yeah priority number one for the Blue Jays right now because although not mathematically out of the playoffs they realistically are coming to spring training with all of your starting rotation pieces in perfect health and then go from there and Kevin Gosman when this season is done he's going to have thrown over 1,700 career Innings so you definitely want to make sure that you don't overuse him at this point of this year 2 two Pitch hit foul off to the right still two and two and you hope that you can push him next year because you're in a race and and wanting seven eight innings in August September yeah that's the goal I mean that's the goal if you're John Schneider if you're Ross Atkins I'm sure they've had a internal discussions about all that already another two- two swing and a bouncer hooked foul down the left field line that was part of why starters got pushed back to begin this series could be part of why the Blue Jays may go to a six-man rotation in [Music] September 2-2 hit well deep left field going back steuart baroa turns around and that ball's in the bullpen a home run slider left over the middle of the plate jury reached down for it and hit it out for just his second home run of the Season yeah BR and jury's had a a tough season so far but he has shown some power over the course of his career a hanging slider from Tommy n and he just drilled it into that Bullpen and left field second run of the day for the Angels it's now 62 Blue Jays baroa gave it a look broa in there substituting after Spencer Horwitz pinch hit for David Schneider but no play to be made as that one dropped into the pen pitch to Niko kavadis now is hitting the air left centner racing back low peredo into the Gap calls off peroa and makes the catch two [Applause] [Music] outs so Tommy NS one out away from getting back to the Dugout here and sending the Blue Jays up to hit in the bottom of the eight right now it's the top of the eighth inning it's 62 Toronto with two outs in the Bas is empty the pitch to Michael phic fast ball outside one and0 Zack pop is now warming up in that Bullpen out in left field as well four-run game perhaps he'd take the ninth inning 10 oh swinging a soft liner right side of the infield Guerrero reaches down and Scoops it up before it hits the dirt a Sho string catch in the truest sense to end the inning Angels do get a run on the solo Homer by former blue jay Brandon jury but that's all the Blue Jays will take a 6-2 lead to the bottom of the eth you're listening to Blue Jays baseball brought to you by your local family-owned Crown Rust Control Center streaming at sportsnet.ca and the Sportsnet swinging a Miss strike three got up to chase the back foot slider at the strikeout for pop on sportset 590 the fan and the sportset radio network [Music] bottom of the eighth inning in Toronto 62 the Blue Jays lead the Angels Ryan zepher John back out on the mound for Los Angeles delivers a first pitch strike to Leo Jimenez 0 and one blue jays trying to sweep a four game series over Los Angeles here's the 01 and it hit him on the back breaking ball just clipped to menz who lightly jogs out of the dirt Circle for a sec running off the pain and we'll now head down to First yeah just a little slider That Got Away from zeph John he's shown that big fast ball we really haven't seen many off speed pitches from him that one right there just a little spinner got Leo Jimenez in the elbow so jenez on first he's on for the second time today here's Stuart baroa batting for the first time right on left the pitch pass ball strike one blue jays haven't swept a four game series in over two years you have to go back to late May May 26 to 29 2022 Blue Jays were playing the angels in Anaheim peroa takes outside ball one and they ended up sweeping the angels as part of an eight or nine game win streak that they' put on to really get their record in a good spot that year 1-1 called strike one and two yeah baseball is one of those unique Sports where it's really hard to win four games in a row especially against the same team and the Blue Jays I mean this year they're about to be if they if they win this ball game they're going to be S and0 against the Los Angeles Angels that is very hard to do they've already secured their best ever season series against the Angels even if they lose today one two swing and a miss strike three beaten by a 100 just off the plate away that's a third strikeout for Zephyr John in his major league debut yeah three three KS I mean when you're throwing 98 to 100 miles an hour it's pretty impressive and then coming out striking out three of the first four batters that you face in your major league debut that's also pretty impressive is dealing with a runner on after he hit Leo Jimenez to start the inning one out the pitch to Addison Barger high ball one we have to find out how many pitchers in Major League history have gotten their first Major League strikeout on one pitch that is a good one that is a good one that's more of an after the game project than something I can do in between Innings 1 called strike one and one blue jay six angels two Addison Barger a big part of that hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning also had a single in the third 1-1 swing and a miss one and two arger asks for time and takes a step out of the box just adjusts the batting gloves for a second and walk back in it's half of the plate points his Bat up toward the sky and now Wheels it around over his left shoulder one two high and outside two balls two strikes I actually like this match up right here zephan throws a lot of fast balls his fast ball is pretty straight and Addison Barger does damage on Fast balls two2 outside ball three it really is a power on power match as well when you have 100 coming out of the right hand of zephron and huge hacks from barer Full Count one out bottom of the eighth zephron kicks releases and misses high ball four fifth walk of the season for Addison Barger and that pushes Leo Jimenez into scoring position with one out pretty good ab right there early on in his career this season you see him get antsy with two strikes you see him get antsy on breaking balls and right there he looked pretty good stayed back on that cutter that was up or that slider that was up on a 3-2 count really didn't react to it I like that approach arger on for the third time Jimenez on second base and George Springer up one for four the pitch off the plate away ball one infield plays the double play depth slightly to pull for the righty hitter 10 oh up and in Springer down right now on his back he was dodging that 98 mph fast ball that was close to the chin that was the definition of Chin Music 98 right around the chin George Springer jumped back fell on his backside that's a scary situation right there that's going to prompt Barry Enright the pitching coach to go out to the mound and talk to the righty Ryan zephron good time to let you know that this copyrighted broadcast is presented by authority of Rogers Blue Jays baseball partnership and may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form and the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent of Rogers Blue Jays baseball partnership or the sportset radio network Springer up in chuckin right now he's doing all right we've seen a lot from Ryan ZR johon in this may Major League debut a lot of why he could be so promising for the angels and a little bit of why the numbers haven't always matched up with the stuff yeah 20 pitches today obviously those three strikeouts but just 10 strikes it's not a good ratio has hit a batter and walked batter in this inning 2 finds the Zone with a cutter for strike one generally speaking pretty effective pitchers are about at about 65% good pitchers 70% strike to ball ratio 2-1 check swing sweeper was down and Away appeal to First no swing and Springer in the driver seat a three ball one strike count nobody up in the pen and right field for the angels zephan with a breath and the pitch down and Away Ball Four that'll be a second walk in a row and now the bases are loaded with one out [Music] [Applause] [Music] Joey L peredo up to the plate hitless today does have a walk and he's batting in a big spot Bases Loaded one out 62 Blue Jays bottom of the eight first pitch is hit high but foul into the 500 levels seats off to the left o and one and this game's not Out Of Reach a four-run game I mean theoretically you bring in Chad green you shut this game down but four runs is not Out Of Reach 01 swing and a soft roller picked up by the first baseman kavadas goes to Second for one and that's the only out they'll get in to score is Leo Jimenez Barger safe at third low peredo safe at first with an RBI fielders choice and now with a five run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning you like to think that five runs is Out Of Reach but still vadder that's a big run standing on on third base Addison Barger out there it's a big big RBI situation for Vladimir guo Jr here 72 the bluejs are leading the angels I wondered for a second here if they think about the intentional walk they've done it twice today second base is open rather than first base although with the relative Command right now of zephyr John probably not in the cards they'll pitch to Guerrero here is the pitch swing in a Miss strike one Guerrero swings out of his shoes at 98 you think they'd mess around with Kirk again no but I also think you know they got burned on the first intentional walk too by loading the bases and Zephyr John has not shown consistent command a one inside one ball one strike and like we said earlier zephron walked 17 guys in Worcester Triple A uh Boston 17 guys in just over 24 Innings that's a lot of walks one1 swing and a flare out to shallow right center field coming in moniac it's down in front of him for a base hit and to score Barger all the way around to third low perfo and Guerrero's got the mest touch right now it doesn't matter if he it's it hard or soft everything is dropping he bloop singles the Blue Jays to an 82 lead yeah that was about as bloop as it gets right off the end of the bat a good pitch from zephron Little slider and Vlad just sticks the the Bat Out hits it off the end and Addison Barger scores for the Blue Jays and they're up six runs now still first and third Alejandro Kirk is up and the pitch swing and a miss strike one Kirk with the two-run Homer is last time up also a walk today and his overall season numbers are starting to Trend toward being about a League average hitter 01 swinging a foul back nothing in two obviously that is not at the level that he hit at when he won his Silver Slugger in 2022 and was an All-Star but if you just look at it in a vacuum most teams would take a League average hitter at catcher that's above average for the average catcher and that's a guy that is is a great defender as well so if you're an average hitter and you're a great defender I'll take that all day long 02 swinging a foul ball rolls into the back stop and I've talked about at length this season just how important um Alejandro Kirk is to the pitching staff he's an incredible framer he blocks most of the balls he's supposed to block he's a pretty good he has a pretty good arm he throws out a decent amount of base runners I mean that's a guy that you want as your starting catcher I I personally think I would want him as my starting catcher what is interesting with a lot of the talk especially early in the year around fatigue with Kirk he's played almost every day now and he's actually in one of his best runs of the season so it doesn't seem to be the case anymore 02 foul tip into the glove strike three Kirk goes down and that will do it for the bottom of the eighth inning the Blue Jays though add on two more runs low peredo RBI fielders choice and a Vladimir Guerrero Jr RBI single it's 82 Toronto we go to the ninth Zack pop about to come on the Blue Schulman alongside Chris Laro show Ali our host and blue jays talk host today Nick Blackmore our producer Andrew Adams and Tom young our technical directors top of the ninth 82 blue jay Zack pops pitch misses inside to Taylor Ward 1 and0 Toronto trying to put the finishing touches on a 4 game sweep of the Angels it would be their first four game sweep in over two years 1 called strike one and one the last time we saw Zack pop against Cincinnati on a August 21st he gave up a run he gave up a run on one hit struck out three but his stuff was the best I have ever seen it I really hope he continues that righty's 1 is a swinging bunt up the third Baseline that's going to roll foul 47th appearance for pop earned run averag is right around six but it's the stuff then it's the stuff that keeps me going keeps me up at night how does a guy with this great stuff have a six plus ER and I'm sure it keeps Pete Walker up at night as well [Music] one two called strike three plants a sinker on the outside edge for route number one in the top of the nine and that's it right there that's what it's just those glimpses into what Zack pop could be that fast ball right there a sinker that started off the plate at 97 and then sunk back over the out outside part of the the plate to kind of steal a strike there I mean that stuff is just nasty Zach Neto up now backs out of the way the first pitch one and0 pop pitching in his fourth Major League season third with the Blue Jays acquired Midway through 2022 1 misses inside again 2 [Music] and0 Sinker slider cutter for pop right-hander works from the first base side 2-0 called strike and he's back in the count at two and one blue jays with runs early and often today 2-1 pitch chopped foul two and two broke open the scoring in the third but added on in the fifth and sixth and the seventh had two more in the eighth inning and all the while Kevin Gosman just rolled along in the game gave up two hits they both came in one inning as he looks like he's on his way to his 100th career Major League win pop set and the two- two swing and a bouncer to short picked up face High by Jimenez he throws to first and there are two [Applause] [Applause] outs final chance for the Angels is a fitting one it's Kevin po up and potentially his final game at Rogers Center the pitch in there strike one almost 700 games as a blue J for Polar he swings at the 01 no he takes but it's a called strike anyway and now the Angels only have one strike to play with here it's nothing in [Applause] two a pack toet Rogers Center on their feet pop in the set looking at pong and the O2 swing and a foul [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ball F back in the Box Taps the plate and looks out at P tall slender right-hander is ready to go another 02 check swing pitch down and Away ball [Music] one the clap starts again at Roger Center Pop Rocks back and releases and misses down and Away went with the slider to try to get polar to chase two and two Paris Sliders in a row maybe he goes back to the Sinker here two two pitch swing and a foul tip held on to by Kirk strike three a scoreless top of the ninth for Zack pop and the Blue Jays win the game 8 to2 sweeping the angels in this four game set at home well that was an incredible game an incredible series Zack po finishing it off there with a 98 mph Sinker to strike out Kevin polar for the seventh time in the last two games but Kevin gsman today was arguably as good as Bal and Francis yesterday walking nobody striking out 10 going seven Innings I tell you what the last three games this blue jays team has played is kind of a glimpse into what it could be what it can be next year if they get the right pieces Blue Jays Homer a couple times great pitching like Chris mentioned and they take the game today 8 to2 we're going to take a quick step aside when we come back we will wrap this one up and get you over to a winning edition of blue jays talk again 82 Blue Jays is the final score Community early on in the ball game from Pitch number one I think his first pitch of the ball game was 95 milph and that's something that I was excited about and then you said we talked about it during the broadcast but that split finger velocity was 2 or 3 mes hour more than it normally is or has been at times this season and just the tumbling action of it the rise of that four seam fastball and then he mixed in the slider he he mixed in that that Sinker at times I mean he was the full package today he was vintage Kevin Gosman and and I I couldn't be happier for him and I'm sure the Blue Jays are like where was that all season long he like I said he was arguably as good as Bowen Francis yesterday and it was a good day to do it I know that pitcher wins aren't as high valued or really even close to as high valued as they were before but for gsman the win today brings him to 100 wins career gsman is just one now of 18 active pitchers with 100 wins on the other side the Blue Jays had to provide some offense and they sure did Toronto scored on a basis loaded walk in the third inning Alejandro Kirk made the Angels pay getting that walk after an intentional walk that would be a theme later on but after the Angels tied it up in the fourth Guerrero came through with an RBI double in the fifth inning still a close game at 2-1 though when will Wagner walked to lead off the sixth back toback outs from Jimenez and Schneider brought Addison Barger up to the plate already a big series for Barger and he stepped up with one on in two outs Blue Jays up 2 one and delivered today's play of the game pitch to Addison Barger with two outs and he hammers it deep to right field Adele Turning Around see you [Music] later second home run of the series for Addison Barger Blue Jays take a 4-1 lead he's been so much better over the last week and a half or two weeks just so confident up there with the approach with the takes that he makes and he's hitting he's hitting hangers I think that's the biggest thing to Be an Effective big leager to be a good big leager you have to you have to take good swings when that pitcher makes a mistake and he got the hanging slider today from Hunter Strickland demolished it he got that hanging he got that hanging change up on Friday night demolished it I think that's the key for Addison Barger when you get your pitch don't miss it Barger mixed in a hit and a walk in the game as well mentioned Kirk would make the Angels pay later they walk Guerrero intentionally with nobody on base and Kirk delivers a two-run homer that really put it out of question Blue Jays added on a little bit more in the eighth and take the game 8-2 Toronto sweeps the four game set and moves to 63 and 68 on the season the Angels drop to 54 and 7 7 two runs for the angels on three hits one error one left blue jay scored eight on seven hits no errors eight left gosman's now 12 and nine Tyler Anderson picks up the loss he is 10 and 12 no save today in a game that took just over 2 and 1 half hours in front of 37,000 very beautiful day in downtown Toronto really fun game Blue Jays make it a winning home stand and now they will go on the road for a five-game series with the Boston Red Sox across four 4 days that starts tomorrow midday 2:00 tune in as we will have coverage of the resumption of the suspended game between the Blue Jays and Red Sox before they duel in game two at 7:00 so that does it for us today appreciate you tuning in for our technical directors Andrew Adams and Tom young our producer Nick Blackmore our host show Ali and my partner Chris laroo I'm Ben scholman saying have a great rest of your Sunday and a good start to your week we'll see you tomorrow but stick around for a little bit get your calls and text in it's blue jay's talk with show Ali right now and Francis in game four gosh the Jays get 10 strikeouts from Kevin gsman Barger and Kirk both Crush some absolute bombs and today like I said they wrap up the four game set with a sweep against the Angels 82 the Blue Jays win it's kind of funny how cyclical things are uh but it's the first four game sweep for the Blue Jays since 2022 when they last swept the Angels Al be it in Anaheim funnily enough if memory serves the first game of that series out west was Ben shulman's first home run call on the Blue Jays radio network George Springer going yard on one of the first pitches of the ball game off of I want to say sh Otani of all players so here we are two plus years later Jay is getting another four game sweep of the Angels uh time really is a flat circle show Ali is with you on Jay's talk live on the sportset radio network we're also streaming on sportsnet.ca and on the sportset app you can give me a call 416 87591 60590 590 on your cell you can text me as well 59590 name and location the people's text line is always open standard messaging and data rates may apply I promise I don't talk about myself in the third person I don't know why I said it like that but either way Jay's talk is on the air why don't we talk a little bit before we go to the text line and certainly go to the phones uh why don't we go and talk a little bit about Kevin Gosman because man he was good like as much as we heaped a ton of superlatives lavished a bunch of Praise on bow and Francis yesterday and boy did he deserve it Kevin Gosman deserves maybe almost just as much he allowed two hits he allowed one more hit than bat and Francis did in one fewer inning essentially seven Innings of work from Gosman two hits one run which was earned uh no walks 10 strikeouts 94 pitches 69 strikes he gets the win his 100th career win not a lot of active pitchers have 100 career a lot a lot of P pitchers like in the course of major league history have gotten to the 100 career win Benchmark but I got to say I think it's even more impressive these days because you look at the names at the top of that list right you look at the career wins list for uh for baseball like over the course of time and B basically every every game on the top of this list is in the Hall of Fame right like if you if if I'm sure you if you didn't know this already I'm sure you're not surprised to hear that Sai Young himself is a top the list of for uh wins and in pitched but the man has 511 wins Walter Johnson 417 wins and Greg Maddox someone who pitched in our lifetimes 355 wins Roger Clemens 354 wins but I I mention these guys because baseball has changed right like how often how often do pitchers even earn wins anymore because of how the bullpen is used and you know P pitchers are throwing harder than ever they're throwing breaking stuff more than they ever have but they're also facing batters less than they ever have because pitchers are going let's say what like two times through the order maybe maybe a third time through the order so I think given all of that and how pitches and and and how how it all changes let's say it has changed even in the last like I know it's changed over the course of many years but even in if you want to micro look at the last like 5 six years 6 to8 years whatever you want to call it I think it's become even less common so for Gosman to get to 100 Carew WIS gota say it's very impressive the only spot of trouble for him today was I thought in that top of the fourth inning he entered the fourth with 39 pitches thrown he left the fourth with 58 pitches thrown lost a little bit of efficiency after a triple and single right off the bat from the top of the Angel's order but uh by and large looked pretty damn good right the fast ball which we know he uses a ton of uh look good the V touching around 97 just over a touch over 97 MPH today his command of the fast ball especially was phenomenal he was placing that thing mostly wherever he wanted so I was very impressed with the fastball command today much like we talked about with b and Francis yesterday but for the splitter Gosman splitter I I just feel like it's it's one of those pitches I I said this when Gosman first on with the Blue Jays a couple years ago but Gosman splitter when that thing is on when it's moving I really do think in terms of individual pitches go like or let me rephrase it in terms of individual any pitcher in Blue Jay's history has thrown right in terms of unhitable pitches that like steeve through and Halliday thre and you know gosh like Marco Estrada had some pretty nasty pitches right in terms of pitches that felt like when they were on were completely unhitable Gosman splitter when it's on is got has got to be up there it's like a top five individual pitch when it's working for any pitcher any starting pitcher I should say and today I think it might have been the most imp impressive it's looked all season I just feel like we have not spoken about that splitter in a positive way for much of the 2024 season but the V on that splitter was up by about 1 and a half miles an hour the vertical break on the splitter which is obviously very important to a pitch like that was way up as well and even in terms of the year-long average in terms of the you know inches and how much the splitter runs and breaks vertically on average he was still throwing it better than he had the entire season so I have said the splitter has not split very well for a good chunk of the year I think the stats do bear out today that that was the best of splitter has been uh the entire season 41687 05986 0590 star 590 on your cell 59590 name and location I see a whole bunch of texts here we're going to get to as many of them as possible get to as many of your phone calls as possible as well let's go to the phones to start us off let's go to Eddie in Fort eie Eddie what's up hey show how are you this afternoon good man how are you I'm doing very well thank you I enjoyed all four games that I saw you know um they were great games and good to see the young kids do their thing and it was a great pitching performance last two days by B and Francis and Kevin Gosman so was pretty good now I wanted to address a little something in relation to uh B Francis because I saw yesterday or actually today uh Taylor Ward's comments about the pitching performance of Francis and I thought to myself you know what this never ceases to amaz M show because that like obviously that player ward has been playing on a team filled with excuses they messed up otani's career and they messed up Trout's career and and and and another thing too they've ruined other players as well whether they've been with them or currently with them and you know what you never see the Blue Jays make excuses on pit on pictures that they face they never made one when they faced Garett crochet and they certainly didn't make one on bayy falter because I called you about that back in May during that the finale of the pirate series and I told him that he was pitching very good and they couldn't square up any of his pitches and you never see the Blue Jays make those kinds of excuses so and and the fact that that Basset had had the um the sign there was was really good and we know lately bastard has become some sort of or maybe close to being a very polarized figure on the Blue Jays with the comments he made on the podcast and after the games from time to time about his outing but the one thing that he cares about is his teammates he was there for VAR when he didn't get a gold glove and he certainly was there for Francis to defend um him on the comments that war made during the the interview that Francis had with sports now when he had that little piece of paper so that was my whole takeaway from that series and about the angels in general hey any I appreciate the call thank you I think for those who uh did not see what the Taylor Ward comments were from yesterday I'll just read it to you it's actually kind of funny the person who tweeted it out that kind of got aggregated a little bit by a variety of media was our very own Jules right Julia C from mlb.com uh putting this into the uh the Twitter sphere and I mean Jules was not it wasn't a gotcha moment I she went in was doing work for mobi.com in the Angels the Angel's Clubhouse and uh she you know she does that especially when Keegan is doing stuff for the J side of the beat but uh she wanted to the Angels Clubhouse and she got this and this is the I'm going to read you what she tweeted out okay Taylor Ward on what made Francis so tough and this is quote I really don't know you know I thought that everything was hitable maybe to other guys he made better pitches a lot of guys were talking about his split and that being on but personally I didn't think it was anything special end quote that's that's the quote from Taylor Ward it does I kind of agree like it does kind of sort of smack of some sour grapes but I don't know like doesn't that also bu like if if it's kind of like a double edged sword right like doesn't that kind of cut both ways in the sense that if you're saying it's nothing special hey if you're the only one to get a hit off of a pitcher in a in an entire game in the span of like two hours and you're the only player who gets certainly not just a hit but a home run off of one pitcher over the course of an entire ball game I think you're probably even if you lose you're probably entitled to say whatever you want cuz you did get him I I guess he'd gone yesterday one for three I think he got hit by a pitch as well but I mean I don't know I it I it doesn't really bother me I think mainly because I still somewhat feel bad for Taylor Ward CU if you guys remember it wasn't last season I think it was the season before I I don't know off top of my head how many games the angels have played uh here at the Roger Center like since this happened but I can't imagine it's been that many right even with the balance schedule I can't imagine happens like a lot right so a handful of times but Taylor Ward got hit in the face by a fast ball from if I'm remembering correctly Alec monoa and I'm I'm I only mention it cuz I kind of wonder if he just kind of just Bears a grudge towards the Blue Jays cuz that year if you remember it was it was trout and Otani having their ridiculous seasons and after that like the next best hitter especially early in the year was probably Taylor Ward so I don't know I'm I'm it it does smack of sour crpes a little bit not really sure what grousing like that gets you and then as you as Eddie mentioned the interview on TV I only saw a brief snippet of it on the TV Ser in the radio Booth but I did see the little picture on social media of bastard holding up the piece of paper and like you know hitable or you know with the his numbers over the last couple of games against the Angels pretty hilarious stuff from Bassin I mean that's like an a a world class alltime top tier troll job by by him but I I got to say I I don't put too much Credence into it just because like who cares but also why are you putting up why are you giving him bullets and board material seems like seems unnecessary right especially if your season is not going anywhere I think Edd's point I mean like do you really need to in a Lost season for either of these teams you really need to be putting out bullets and board material I'm going to go out on a limp and say say no probably don't need to do it uh 41687 0598 6590 star 590 on yourell uh let's go back to the phones let's go to Russ in New Jersey Russ what's up good afternoon how are you what's up man how are you we might have a winning the first month we might have a winning record I think they're four games with this sweep they're four games over 500 so that's pretty good I want to argue with you and disagree with you on that something you said last week okay let's talk about you know people call up about trades and then you said you said at the end and and I say this respectfully okay um you because I think you're a great baseball guy and you follow the game very well you talked about you know oh we can evaluate you know some sometimes you evaluate years later let's take the burritos let's take the burritos tra the Jay's lost the buros tra and I'll explain you very simply why you were in a position in 20 2021 where the Toronto Blue Jays felt they were on the cusp of going far in the playoffs and they had two pieces of I'll call them gold and Richardson and Martin their gold their piece of gold their top prospects I'm not telling you what every team would have given you for them because I don't know the answer to that but it could be Fool's goal because it could be nothing at the end but you had two players who you couldn't convert now the Toronto Blue Jay Bel at the time they were a team that was was on the CP of going far into the playoffs and that's why they gave up these two guys the Minnesota Twins look at it on the other hand and I don't you know they looked at it well we're going to give up this guy we're not winning today but we we know we have a good pitch on buros we'll got two young guys in I look at the Blue Jay set I don't care what happens to the Minnesota twin guys if I win two World Series with burritos and those guys come on to be Stars so be it I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish the Blue Jays set out to accomplish to go far in the playoffs and they didn't get that done now you have buros because you signed him they had two years left on this contract so you didn't get you what you set out to accomplish in that trade you didn't do so from the blue JS they lost now if those guys turn into great players then you lost more but what could you have done with those two players you could have kept them you would you wouldn't have been worse than you are now Richardson is pitching in the Minnesota rotation Martin's playing but the point is you and on the on the flip side the Minnesota Twins have to look at it from their perspective and their perspective is we waited and we knew we weren't going to win back in 2021 well they happen to go farther than the Blue Jays because they wanted Series last year happens to be against the Blue Jays but the point is that's what they what theyve out made out to accomplish they've done that sometimes you could have both teams who win a trade sometimes you could have both teams lose a trade but if I'm look at the blue even if for realos through 000000 ER we lost the trade we didn't what you thought you thought you had a team that was on the the verge of going far in the playoffs and the fact is they didn't get there so that that that trade and it's already over because 22 his contract was officially over they signed him so for me you lose that trade it's only based on what I made out what I what the Blue Jays made you know wanted to accomplish and they didn't get to that point so I don't care what those other guys become if I win the trade then I wi if I win a World Series and I won the trade so that's really the way I look at a trade you know not what those guys could have become what could I have done with those two pieces if I hadn't traded for BOS and there's a lot of different things you probably could have done but BOS being on this team has been a solid player but we haven't gotten to where we need to get so that's the way that's why I look at the trade that way sure hey Russ I appreciate the call I always appreciate having these debates with you I I do uh I do appreciate when you call in certainly I think I think it does depend on certainly when it comes to trade evaluations depends on just what you want like you certainly the Blue Jays account as you quote unquote right using the Royal you or the Royal we or the Royal us here right but I think it does kind of depend on what you want out of a trade like is is it is it simply larger results is it that you you can only judge a trade based on the amount of either regular season or postseason obviously in the Blue Jays case success then if that's the case then yeah I would have to agree that unequivocally most trades they have done in that time period would be viewed as failures because ultimately if you're making trades with the goal of winning a World Series or the very least making a deep playoff run neither of which have happened for the Blue Jays during this era as we've documented endlessly uh then yeah then you kind of have to view it as as a failure but I think the reason I still I'll still view it as a success is because let's let's say and and I I hear what you're saying Russ cuz you're saying you know you kind of have to stop the evaluation of the trade after BOS would have become a free agent right I said that before about other players too so I can kind of get behind that evaluation of of things but you know because the Blue Jays ended up signing Brios to a very Team friendly contract and they had the first opportunity to do that Beyond anyone else because they had his you know had his rights for lack of a better term and had him available to only them and he clearly wanted to stay here here in Toronto so if that's the case then I view it as success because let let's say that didn't get done right let's say you did just like let's say you just didn't make that trade and you still had Simeon Woods Richardson yet had Austin Martin like wood Richardson would probably be in the starting rotation but would he have given you the kind of output that Brios gave you last year probably not I would say it's only really this year that he's kind of I don't want to say like turned into a pumpkin by by any means but he he has not been as good this year as he as he was for most of last year right so I I think that's why if I if I'm just like if if I'm just replacing buros with swim Simon wood Richardson and even if you discount Austin Martin because I'm not really sure what he's going to be at the major league level I'm not really sure it's going to be anything beyond you know is he going to be an everyday player at any point or or or or a consistent player at any point I'm not sure it's kind of a bummer for a guy who was a relatively high draft pick but for Woods Richardson I mean if you're literally just doing a one forone swap in 2023 I mean are are do the Blue Jays make the playoffs I don't know honestly I I I tend to think no right and I mean that's an that's an even worse result than what happened last year I mean don't get me wrong it was so sad and demoralizing we don't have to relitigate that please let's let's not but I don't know that I that's why I still view that as a win because and I mean look I think there's also a lot of room left and this this is why I think it's hard to evaluate trades long term until you've seen the breadth of a lot of their careers but what if Brios ends up continuing to to pitch poorly what if he like what if next year it's it's even worse than this year and then next year simeons wood Richardson and Austin Martin actually continue to play in the pitcher case plays well and Austin Martin becomes someone really really consistent for the Minnesota Twins then maybe I would change my mind right but I think that's why it's such a hard thing in baseball particular to really to really change things but I agree with you it might be the only sport in which we do that right like if you trade I don't know like if the I don't know the only example that comes to mind like if the if the the Leafs traded Mitch martyr and he goes on and has like a redonkulous season somewhere else but the Blue Jays or the the the leaves win the Stanley Cup I know unlikely but if that if that were to happen then like you'd probably view it as a win you'd probably view that trade as a win again both those things are probably pretty unlikely tra trading Mar and and the least winning the cup but I don't know I think that's why it's tough to evaluate trades in baseball 590590 name and location uh you can certainly text me here on the people's text line uh you know what I see a text here from just as a quick correction Uh Kevin in Toronto just say it was last season that Ward broke his face on a Manoa pitch God was it really last season my goodness it all Blends together and then yeah B Francis did hit Taylor Ward in yesterday's game with the helmet so I think I I I really genuinely believe a part of at least a part of the motivation for Taylor wart to have the sour grapes comment was because he just doesn't like the Blue Jays he probably was just so grumpy he probably was just mad and if that's the case then I don't know I I tend to not take it very seriously and honestly bassett's response was the perfect response like they could have gone out in the media and being like yeah dor wart sucks like we hate DOR Bo but they didn't right they kind it was kind of like a light-hearted way to do it while Bowen was was talking to Dan so I I think that's pretty cool uh 590590 name and location let's see here uh Chris and Regina hey show how how often do you see a 4 game sweep for all the Jay's complaining it could be worse you could be an angel's fan that's that's true I mean you're not wrong also we haven't changed the manager or bench coach or hitting coaches aside from the competition why are they hitting home runs I got to think like they just there's got to be something too and this is there's no nothing there's no empirical evidence behind this by any means but there's got to be something to playing a little Freer when the stakes are a little bit lower or when there are basically zero Stakes let's put it that way and and again maybe that applies to Vladimir Guero Jr maybe I only use him as an example because he has been absolutely RedHot like vlat can do no wrong as evidenced by just like sawing off the Little Blooper for an RBI late in the game I think he was in the eighth inning so you know I mean he can do no wrong but he's done it so consistent L I think I go even Beyond whatever the stakes might be he's just hit all over the place right I mean even in a relatively pressure patched situation he was the one who gave the Blue Jays the lead back today to make it two to one on the double right so uh which was by the way a ridiculous hit they kind of got the change up on the edge of his Bat and still almost hit it for a home run well over the head of Kevin polar the ball bounces all the way back into the field of play run scores easily great stuff from platty so I think because we've seen him hit in pretty like you know relatively clutch you know quote unquote situations here I'm I'm going to absolve him from that but I think for a lot of the young guys I don't know probably behooves them to see them thrive in a in a relatively low stakes environment like I actually had this conversation about uh funnily enough uh who was it uh Scotty Barnes Scotty Barnes had this conversation about with the Raptors and how you know the man was an All-Star and he was Rookie of the Year and I don't know like the the teams did not have for the Raptors like a huge amount of expectations on them but I think being able to learn and make mistakes in an environment where you're not like punished for it because if you fail it means they are one game away one game further away from making the playoffs like I really do believe that it it helps you now of course how does it matter when ultimately they do play in pressure patch situations and hey I mean they they still have have performed in the in the spots where it's mattered the most so it it also let's if we're being honest it could also just be the the SE like the law of averages things could just be balancing out because the offense was so terrible for so much of the early season that we were saying boy it's not and I said this a million times it's not just like 50 games of this it's actually uh 100 or it's 22 games of this or whatever it is right so you know I think we're we're past that the very leas but I do I do wonder the back of my mind I do Wonder a little bit about what it will look like next season for a lot of these guys and of course that's what the whole season is about um let's see let's check some more texts here on the text line Jeff and Peterboro says uh great game would like to see Vladimir Guero Jr get a multi-year deal uh I see here Ed Aurelia does MLB not have someone watching games evaluate umpires this guy behind the plate is one of the worst I've seen I would go far go so far as to say he is poop emoji so there you go so I I think I I'm guessing Ed you do not want to say that that emoji you wanted to say another word which you know I appreciate CU I can't say it on the air but you know I I just say this we don't have to go too long on this but I I am looking forward to the the automated balls and balls and strike system or at the very least like the review system at the very least the review system I think that's I'm not sure you really uh you really want uh robots if they haven't been 100% tested and because you know that kind of probably leads to some some problems but I tend to generally lead more more often than not towards the uh the the robots here let's see uh another text on the text line 59590 name and location Madden Halifax said wow another brilliant start for the pitching staff Vint go vintage Gosman out there racking up the cas great to see the offense coming through as well let's keep this going into Fenway Andrew from Kitchener this team is the fun to watch in the last 3 years is there a chance that Jay's can make a run at the third wild card okay so I I don't want to sound like a huge Debbie down on a day the Blue Jays complete a four game series sweep I'm going to say no and here's why okay here are the teams in front of the blue I don't think these actually been updated with today's scores but uh here are the the standings as of I mean I don't think they would have changed that much anyways even if any of these teams won or lost but uh based on the Wild Card R standings entering play today cuz I had this screen up on my computer before the game started so the Royals were in the second Wild Card position uh but they're virtually tied with the twins at two and three Wild Card spots cuz they're both 72 and 57 entering play today the Red Sox were four and a half games back of the third wild card spot they are 67 and 61 the rays are 65 and 64 they are seven games back of the third Wild Card the Mariners are 7 and a half games back they are 65 and 65 the Detroit Tigers are 64 and 66 they are 8 and 1 half games back and again prior to today's game game the Blue Jays were 10 and 1 half games back so I I mentioned the all the teams in front of you because if you think about it like this right there I think after today's game there are 31 more games in the regular season right up until September 29th which is the final day of the regular season I believe here at the Rogers Center against the Miami Marlin so that's the uh the amount of games remaining so in 31 games okay what you need to happen is not only do the Blue Jays need to play really well you essentially need a whole whack of those teams if not all of them to completely melt down between now and the end of September and I'm not saying it's impossible for teams to melt down we literally saw it you remember you guys remember last year I mean I know the Rangers won the World Series so the point is moot in the end because they they don't care what happened during the regular season they won the World Series for the first time in franchise history but there was a chance there was a time where the Rangers were like so far in away the division leaders and then by the end of the season on the last day of the regular season they were battling it out because the Astros and Rangers they were they were swapping positions almost daily because of this massive meltdown the Rangers had it is absolutely possible that let's say one team melts down and I would make the argument the team that's had the Meltdown is the merits frankly they in the midst of a massive meltdown they disired Scott service it the Scott service found out about being fired through social media and not from Jerry depoto like what a mess right the Mariners are the team that's having the Meltdown right now but I mean it it's probably it's probably even still pretty improbable but possible that another team has meltdown the Tigers did or the Rays did or even the Red Sox you go and take four or five from the Red Sox in in Boston yeah as well as it's possible but it's just in order to make the playoffs you essentially need one of the Royals and twins you need the Red Sox Rays Mariners and tigers all to meltdown and I think that's why it's just it's just so and then you you yourself have to also play at a a really high clip of of winning percentage that's what you need you need all of those things to happen in the span of a month effectively and I just I don't know how likely is that I'm not not because the Blue Jays are bad but just because I don't know How likely is that from any team right I think that's that's really the only reason why and I think that's why when you look at baseball reference or fan graphs or whatever that's why the percentages for playoff odds are so so darn low uh because they it it it's out of your hands essentially like if you the Blue Jays can win every single game until the end of the regular season because we're we're talking about like right now the conversation is can the Blue Jays even get back to 500 and then once they get back to 500 can they finish the year at 500 so we're talking about the Jays getting to like a a a a plateau of like let's say 82 wins even they get up they finish the Year by 500 they 82 83 wins right that probably be viewed as like a quote unquote win given where the Blue Jays were for a good chunk of the season I don't think they were they haven't been at 500 since like May or something right so if that's the case I would view that as a win but ultimately if you're talking about what'll get you into the wild card this year like if the Royals and twins have 72 wins before the end of August you got to think even if they play passable baseball for the rest of of the Season then you know they're going to be what like 89 wins 87 to 89 wins 88 to 90 wins probably even more frankly the way they've been playing so if that's the case then I don't know it's a that's a tall order you know it's kind of like The Dumb and Dumber thing like so you're telling me there's a chance I guess there's always a chance it's just a it's an unlikely one 590590 name and location uh let's go back to the text line real quick uh Joey uh just Joey no location on this one said say I wish we had this type of play from Kevin Gosman all year long uh Nathan and Ripley Joey L peredo is a mouthful I'd like to nominate him for the nickname JLo that's funny I wonder I wonder if there is any other JLo's in that like anyone who could in theory take that in baseball I'm trying to think I I have to look that up I do know that his nickname from the players weekend was Joe Cooks I don't know if you guys saw this I don't know how much they did of this on TV but you know when the players weekend was was pretty recently and you know they use the fun bats and you know they have the nicknames and stuff I know they didn't wear the nicknames on the Jersey this year but uh Joe Cooks was Joey lfo's nickname because he apparently likes to cook he's a he's a bit of a chef so maybe that's the nickname that will stick although if the if the secondary nickname of JLo does go um I don't mind it Nathan maybe maybe we'll try and make it happen kind of like w Rod maybe we can go with JLo mark from thoral uh Hey show great to see Barger hitting like this when you add Horwitz with uh alen rhen and kovich knocking on the door down in Buffalo offensive looks offensive future for the J looks pretty promising with or without B it's too bad or Elvis is not in the house to see what he could do at this time also it's true and I can't imagine we're going to see Elvis for the rest of the season I know his suspension technically ends before the end of the regular season but I think because the uh Minor League season actually ends a week before the regular season and his suspension is going to I think the difference between the his suspension and and the rest of the the Major League season was only about a week I can't there's not going to be any time to send him on a rehab assignment so like would you want to bring him up without a rehab assignment after not playing for like 3 months essentially probably not so I I'm unfortunately we probably have seen um the last of Arvis Martinez for this season I'm sure we'll talk about him more next season but on Barger I mean Barger hits a two run bomb off of Hunter Strickland in the bottom of the sixth inning he absolutely obliterates a hanging slider and I just he's play he's been playing great recently I don't want to slag the guy by any means I just wonder with the The Log Jam of guys what his role is like with Clement playing so well Barger is just probably not going to see a ton of time at third right so how much do you want to play him in right field with Springer still out there and a whole bunch of other guys needing time that could rotate in and out at DH so I mean you're probably not going to be dhing Barger a lot but I mean we've seen Springer get dhed certainly more than we've seen him get or got dhed last year so if you're going to be dhing Springer then I guess you could put Barger in right field but then that means like you have to decisions to make with vlat and Horwitz and and all these different guys in the infield you can make it work certainly but uh you know I just I do wonder how that how that plays out it's probably worth running Barger out there as much as possible until the end of next month but let's let's say and this certainly seems to be the case Bo bashet returns in the next few weeks and apparently he's going to join the team in Boston uh he's going to get in some base running over the course of I don't know if it's going to happen tomorrow but maybe on Tuesday and then maybe by the by next weekend by this time next week maybe B is on a rehab assignment in Buffalo and then maybe by the following series which would be not the beginning of next week but just shortly after that maybe you see bo back in in game so if that's the case it's another spot short stop that you you now effectively can't put other guys like Clemen and Jimenez if you're committing to playing B every single day like you usually does when he's healthy right so I mean hey play Barger as much as you possibly can uh certainly before a guys start to return because I do wonder he's 24 years old he's going to be 25 by the beginning of next season what his role will be uh 59590 name location 41687 0590 1A 60590 star 590 on your cell those are all the Myriad of ways to reach me let's go back to the phones let's go to Tyler in London Tyler what's up hi Howard thanks for taking my call yeah I think yeah I think the Blue Jays can reach 500 but I don't think they're going to make the playoffs but that's just my opinion what I want to talk about was that walk to Guerrero in the eth inning sure yeah what's up what do you want to say the announcers were saying they they didn't weren't too happy with that I listen to a lot of Yankee games and uh my question is why are people still pitching to Aaron judge you hit two more homers today he's got 51 now but they're pitching to him why are the managers not walking Aon judge like I I don't understand uh is it because maybe they are you think the managers are told they have to pitch to him I don't know what the story is but they're pitching toam every game he's he's not walking hey Tyler I I appreciate the call man I I you know what I do think because I foret who had brought this up one of the late night Jay's talks we were doing might have been Allen might have been Allen in a cab now now just in Toronto I guess but and retired I suppose now but Allan had asked the same question right like why why does anyone pitch the judge anymore and and I think that the the simple answer is just that I mean Aaron judge is as ey Untouchable a player as there is in baseball now I think I saw the stat that judge hit his 50th and I guess now 51st home run I think he went back I think the Yankees went back to back to back with uh stto judge and Stanton which is just absurd right but I um you look at judge and and as as great as he was and now he's in the company of like people who have hit multiple home three or more seasons of 50 home runs or more and it's like Babe Ruth and and Sammy Sosa and Mark Maguire and A-Rod so it's like you know I mean you know it's basically three guys who are accused of using steroids in Babe Ruth essentially so that's pretty ridiculous company to be in if you're air and judge but I I I I also think he just he does strike out a lot like he strikes out a lot because because Tyler's right he doesn't also walk a lot and that is by no means a knock on Aaron judge the man is the runaway favorite for Al MVP I I got to think that because you know at the end of the day baseball is a sport of failure even the most successful guys are still hitting at a rate of like 30% essentially right so if that's the case then I kind of understand it like I think you you you play the averages having said that I mean it still seems like a losing proposition to throw baseballs to Aaron judge and frankly I mean these days it feels like a losing proposition to throw baseballs to Vladimir Guero Jr right I mean I I was like the fans here in attendance a little uh little put out when vlat got the uh the intentional walk because I don't know you want to see you want to see vlat hit right and I I joked yesterday that these days we could probably spend I don't know like 5 to 10 minutes on vlat every single game and still find something pretty positive to discuss but like like Tyler says the intentional walk today because the I guess because of the threat he poses with Runners on base he just don't take that chance but um the next time up he slaps a double into left field he got intentionally walked again and uh with with the with right before the Kirk home run too but on the uh the Double into left field we mentioned this earlier but the the great change up off the bat he just has incredible pitch recognition so I just I mean it's again why why you even bother pitching to Vladimir Guero Jr by the way after that RBI double this from this was from sportset stats and the Blue Jays vlat leads the majors with 29 extra base hits since the All-Star break which is kind of stupid right it's kind of ridiculous how good that is so anyways Vlad breaking news Vladimir Guerrera Jr is a good baseball player uh let's take a quick break and when we come back let's go back to the phones 41687 059 1A 60590 star 590 on your cell 590590 name and location that's the people's text line still a whole whack of text for us to get you and on the other side speaking of latty actually I did 590 the band and the sportset radio network blue jay is going to see the Boston Red Sox so the first of five games tomorrow but of course Kevin Kevin Gosman certainly won't be pitching into dou header tomorrow but Danny Janson is certainly going to be playing in the double header and as you guys know some some major league history awaits us tomorrow as Alex cor has already confirmed that Danny jansen's going to catch in the uh the resumption of the suspended game that will resume in the I think the top of the second inning and I believe it was Danny Jansen at bat when the game was suspended so not only will he catch for both teams effectively in the same game but we'll catch uh I I guess in the in the at bat that he was previously batting in so that's a pretty little fun little Quirk of how baseball works with the suspended games but that's Kevin Gosman who again today was just phenomenal seven Innings two hits one earned run no walks 10 strikeouts as the Blue Jays sweep away the angels with an 82 win here at the Roger Center I'm show Ali you're listening to J talk here on the sportset radio network still some time to give me a call 41687 0598 60590 St 590 on yourell 590590 name and location that's the people's text line it's all always open I want to talk a little bit about Kirk and talk a little bit about the Bob Nightingale report about Vladimir Guero Jr's usage at third base going forward but first I did want to get to a couple more texts uh let's see there was a text here Jeff and St Thomas of vlat for prime minister that's it that's all that's a text it's pretty funny uh Tom and Aja actually it's funny because these two next two texts are kind of like diametrically opposed Tom and Ajax says Hey show no chance that Jays are getting the third wild card because the next five series are all against good teams fighting for a playoff spot then Bobby says the Royal schedule is crazy which I admittedly have not looked at I have not looked at what the what the Royals are are doing but um the Royal schedule is crazy says Bobby if we win seven or R um against Boston we've got a shot so yeah he's basically saying you got to win a lot and and you do have a chance again you have a chance it's just there's so much that's outside of your own control that has to go right for that to be the case and I feel like it's I feel like let's let's get back to 500 let's see the team get a 500 record then we can we can return I promise I'll return and have this conversation because I think that's that's the spot in which you can start to take it a little more seriously and hey I mean the Js not that far out from being 500 after they won four straight so against the Angels so you definitely uh definitely can have that conversation next weekend you know maybe we'll see how how the series against the twins which is next weekend and certainly against the Red Sox go before you're facing the Phillies and the Mets and the Braves which come up after that so it's it's a bit of a tough road to Hope but um you know we can we can revisit that uh there was one from Greg in Brantford can you explain the waiver claim process as to why Boston got James Paxton did Jays have an opportunity and didn't want want him now if I remember correctly James Paxton was I think he was DFA and and but before because the way it works is I I think the way the DFAS work is you have seven days of the transaction of the DFA before the player can be traded or then placed outright on waivers so I think he was on waivers and then the dod the Dodgers just traded him to the Red Sox so I think I I do think had he gone on waivers teams that had a higher priority than the Red Sox I I would imagine the the Blue Jays would have had such a such a priority and maybe maybe it's based on actually last year's I got I got to double check the uh the way the waivers work but in Paxton's case specifically he was traded to the Red Sox I don't think he was claimed off waivers but um waivers in in the way DFA works and so on it's a little funny because you like hear the DFA news and then like boom you kind of like there's nothing and then he gets traded essentially right much like Cav bio what happened with beio earlier in the year um all right I want to talk a little about Kirk before we go we got about 10 minutes left and uh Kirk he it's funny cuz we were talking about the intentional walks Kirk gets to the plate after vlat is intentionally walked with no one on base I can kind of understand when you have a base open walking a guy but with no one on base I don't know just like pitch to the guy I I I really do believe that but Kirk smokes one 395 ft that has got to feel first of all so good when the guy in front of you gets intentionally walked because they feel you're an easier out and then you just punish the next baseball thrown to you great stuff from Kirk this Echo is a text we had gotten yesterday and I think I think it was from Logan in Georgetown but since Kirk has assumed the primary catching spot on the team I actually feel like he's played much better his numbers are starting to actually turn towards being you know like an average offensive catcher he is nowhere near the form he had in I guess it was the first half of 2022 when uh he was the starting catcher for the uh the American League in the All-Star game but so we're not we're not there obviously I'm just to be clear I'm not saying that but you know given that he is just average offensively no that as we do that Kirk is pretty well close to being Elite when it comes to a defensive his defensive game his pinch framing he blocks pretty well he calls a great game he works well with pretty much all of the pitchers starters or relievers that's great and we know this already to be true so if you're an average offensive catcher and a pretty great to Elite defensive catcher most teams would take that I would think right I mean again is he is Kirk going to be batting like cleanup all the time probably not and I think you actually prefer that he's not especially you can go out and get some guys who can bang in the offseason yeah for sure you want that but I think I think there's enough there from Kirk that I think it's you don't consider it like a black hole as as much as you did for much of the early part of the season I just really do think the Run he's on we're talking about Jano a little earlier the Run he's on is at least enough for me that if it continues through the end of the regular season and there's a lot of ifs when it comes to between now and the end of September it does kind of push the need for a backup catcher I would say to like the very bottom of the shopping list no like the needs list right you can't ignore it but I mean if they if they end up just resigning Jano in the offseason and you return with Kirk and Jano as you're catching tandem next year that's probably fine honestly it's probably fine so there are also not a lot of options out there as we've discussed at length but I mean hey that's uh that's that's fine with me your your dollars are probably better used elsewhere let's put it that way um I mentioned the report from Bob Nill so I'm going to read you what night Andale said in USA Today Bob night Andale is actually going to go on with Roger Lis I believe tomorrow so I'm sure he'll talk about this personally a little bit more but I'm going to read you Verbatim what he wrote in USA Today in his weekly column which comes out every Sunday the Blue Jays are exploring the possibility of having Vladimir Guerero Jr play Third Base next season and are planning to use him there more frequently in September Guerrero hasn't been an everyday third baseman in four years but considering there is a deep crop of free agent first baseman this winter led by Pete Alonzo and Christian Walker it will be much easier to fill a hole at first than at third end quote from Bob Nale and I I genuinely agree with the last part of that premise which is that it's generally easier to find a repl placement level player at first base than it is at third base not for vlad's replacement statistic but just to find a good first baseman is I'm sure much easier than it is to find a good third baseman and I'm curious what you guys think of seeing more of latty at third base well I'm not convinced he is the long-term answer at such a position as Third Base it does mirror the comparison many of you guys have made uh to Raphael Des uh for months you've been talking about des and passing eventually caught on he talked about Des pretty recently as well when he was on with Blair and Barker or or andison Barker but uh Des probably I I bring up his case because certainly the Blue Jays are going to see the Red Sox and Des tomorrow but Des is probably also not a long-term answer third base for the Red Sox right he he likely will eventually shift to first by the end of that deal he just signed it 10 years 33.5 million in January 2020 uh 2023 so last January so he'll be 38 at the end of that deal he's 27 now he'll be 28 in October I just looked it up so he he is someone who is what already I think at best like a like a decent Defender like an allright Defender at third base I just can't view him as a long-term third baseman it's just that the Red Sox kind of like to this point have had good options at first base namely Tristan cases who just returned you know again just being the operative award here off of the I the 60-day I after Ming must missing much of the season and and again I just think all of that applies to vlat like if you want to make him a third baseman and sign let's say Christian Walker to use one of night and Gill's examples to play first base it's not going to be for a long time right like Walker will be 34 before next season starts so how long are you realistically signing a guy like that for like two years 3 years and the third year is a team option or a mutual option let's call it I mean if you're signing Pete Alonzo it's a little different because he's going to be 30 in December you're going to have to give him a whole ton of money and so for comparison's sake and I know you guys know this but for those who don't the Jays handed the biggest contract in the history of the franchise to George Springer and that was year is $150 million and Alonzo reportedly wants more than that he wants a long-term deal of at least 200 million has been the report all season long and look we know all the top free agents or the top free agents not named shotani essentially from last year did not get top dollar right uh Matt Chapman certainly uh Cody Bellinger tasar Hernandez JD Martinez Jorge Soler like all the guys did not have the greatest off Jordan Montgomery although he's a pitcher but you know all these guys a lot of them Boris CLI certainly as we we discussed got less than most expected so maybe Alonzo will not find as robust a market as he wants but he's still going to command lots of money for a decent chunk of time and maybe if he signs with the JS won't be for a huge long term but I just end up think if that's the direction the Blue Jays are going in then I got to think part of the equation with vlat is that he will actually end up being a first baseman long term but in the short term they'll just try for some kind of short-term solution with whoever it is at first base maybe ree Hoskins maybe Paul gold maybe Josh Bell those guys are all free agents this year and I don't know if any of them are particularly sexy actually wouldn't mind a ree Hoskins at first base if flat he's going to play Third and and of course if you're getting just I'm not a huge fan of latty playing third long term but I just wonder if you can get anything passable from him at third base you're probably fine right you're you're probably fish and I think the other half of this equation that really fascinates me is the cascading effect on the rest of the lineup like Clement for example who we talked about a lot recently he's been playing really well assuredly he is on the team team next year so if lat is going to be seeing any sort of time at third base I got to imagine that the Jays will be out on the bregman of the world in free agency and that whenever vlat is dhing or at first base Clement will just play at third base right so you're entering next year essentially with some sort of split of vlat and Clement at third horwood could play first if say like again we're spitballing here but if Walker or Alonzo is on the team and if they're dhing or more likely uh Horwitz will be your starting second baseman next year or he'll be the 75% of the time starter at second basic there are a lot of options you could do what happens with bashed Clement could play at Short if you needed him to it's just going to be a really interesting off season uh when it comes to developments for vlat his contract certainly what coritz and Clement are doing next year what Bose statuses either as a blue jay or not I mean there just a lot of options for the Jays but I just found that report from Bob Nightingale so fascinating because we we kind of talked a lot in the past about how much should vlat be playing at third base and if hey if he if he's going to play more than he is right now which is to say like once or twice a week at third base then that does change the effect on everyone else but and probably also changes how much money he's asking for right because third basemen are a little more valuable as we just laid out with Des they're a little more valuable than first baseman a couple more texts to get you uh before we go uh Mark in thoral oh Mark Mark had texted us yesterday about like the hitting coaches and so on I did want to pass along that Don madingley I think he had like shoulder surgery and I think that's why we had not seen him in in quite some time that's why Don madley has not been on the broadcast I think but I do believe he is going to rejoin the team very shortly uh Tango in Ottawa Tango this is just this is mean man this is uh this is tempting fate Tango says it would be weird if there was another rain delay it would be weird it also be horrible none of us want that Tom doesn't want that I don't want that Andrew doesn't want it Nick doesn't want Raj doesn't want it no one wants another rain delay they are playing five games against the Boston Red Sox no one wants like a yeah they're not going to do a triple headed although that would be kind of fun but no one wants to see another delay please Tango let's keep love calling this game it's because I get a chance to bring some joy into people's lives anything can happen on a baseball field we've got a new game it's perfectly unscripted theater everybody on their feet because you never know what you're going to see on a given day it is belum at the bank as Bryce Harper has put the Phillies on top there's just something about baseball on the radio something about the way Wood hits leather a swing of the drive to deep BL Center the way leather gets dirt how he make a play Oh My the way a deep Fly ball sounds like it's about to change history High Fly ball to center field it's hit pretty well toward the wall until the cleats hit the grass hit the crush brick and then nothing but sky in a silent crowd until leather hits leather and 40,000 fans lose their Collective Minds in a perfect Symphony of chaos he jumped up on top of the wall balanced himself and caught it the way nothing triumphs a perfectly honest call I don't believe what I just saw and the way the right voice can make a moment live forever touch them all Joe you'll never hit a bigger home run in your life Outsiders may think this is just two teams the ball a bat and a microphone but no for over a hundred years this has been the soundtrack of the American Pastime he strucking out looking it's over it's over the Rangers have won the World Series the soundtrack of mistakes during the game they won the game and he's ticked off after the game about it and he's like we can't have that like it's so you know he's setting a a tone a demanding tone which is you know
