Dodgers postgame: Dave Roberts praises Jason Heyward, saw improvement from Walker Buehler

[Music] Dave if you look back at that eighth inning there was obviously a lot of just emotions tensions a lot going on but to see Jason when you went to the plate could you just kind of feel the momentum shifting just really there in that bottom of the um you know I I just you know obviously it was a big game for them um they go they go to Muno in the seventh um to do an up down uh speaks to you know how important this game was to them and uh you know will getting hit Tommy getting run up on on a call third strike and um I just obviously my emotions tonight I showed how excited I was for Jason and um I just truly believe the game honors you and uh the game honored him tonight um he does things the right way and he was ready when called upon and he came with a huge hit and so that was uh shoot that was probably the Highlight for me of the Season uh thus far um and our guys just kept fighting you know Tommy with the big hit U mookie with a big hit and um the bullpen was just lights out and uh they picked us up big time tonight when you see a player like Jason Hayward and you know coming off the bench and it's obviously kind of becoming more of his role as how valuable is that just when you have a player like him coming in a clutch especially as you guys get ready for the end of this regular season it's great and I think that's one of the things that I I like about our ball club now in the sense that guys are starting to understand their roles and we have guys that are going to play every day um certain guys that we're not going to hit for certain guys we might hit for and certain guys are going to have to come off the bench and um so to kind of accept the role understand it you know it makes you better and uh today it uh it worked out for Jason it worked out for us you got beer you know um I I thought the last two innings were better um you know even the first inning he he gets a couple quick outs and then he's got two walks and I just didn't like the palanco sequence um I thought he had him with Spin and he tried to come in hard with them where I thought you know that was the one pitch you don't want to do um I thought I love the way he competed like I said I thought um strike throwing was certainly better than the last start I thought he was striking his his uh curveball much more um I thought he stayed in his delivery much better and you know for me you know I could have pushed him potentially to the fifth inning but he was stressed every inning and so you know in that situation 82 pitches is like 102 pitches and so we're in a tight ball game I felt giving those guys a different look um was the best way for us to win a ball game um but I do think that um it was better than his last start's that balance versus competing like trying to get out versus like trying to figure out who he is now what he can sort of do to that Happ yeah you know what I I think what it is is um you know where I think where he's at where everyone should be is you've got to earn the right to get more opportunities and um you know right now I felt that he gave us all he had and you know if if he continues to get better then he's going to get more leash um we need to win baseball games that's just the way it is so um I'm doing the best I can to you know put guys in the best position to win a game that night and then you know once that happens win or lose you pick up the pieces and do it again the next day and and so I think that the opportunities that certain whether it's starters Le in a game or relievers in leverage you know right now it's about performance and guys have to earn that that opportunity and that's the way should be at what point did you realize that Gavin toer was back on the field um when he was rounding second base um but I thought I saw it go out but mys aren't great um so you know I'm I'm happy it worked out and Gavin's been huge man Gavin's I mean even the first one he just first at bat he just missed hitting a home we just got in on a little bit but he just keeps having big hits and playing great defense have some tough decisions coming up with the roster with a hit like tonight with Jason and you know his other Pinch at home was pretty big knowing how big that complain in October that I kind of B Off the Bench can you really solidify that spot any spot with like this um solidify I don't know um I I know CT's coming back and OB he's a part of what we've done what we're doing you know this year next year so um yeah this is the tough part of the job so it's a good thing that you have a lot of good players um but you only have so many spots um you know I I know we're not going to go uh I got apologize to Allin we're not going to go short on um on on a pitcher and he was right I was wrong so but we're not going to go short we're going to go third two position players thir two pitchers and um yeah and so there's someone's going to be the casualty unfortunately I don't know the answer right now's at 39 and 38 now right 4040 pitting I don't know would you kind of like to see him do it it' be great yeah yeah absolutely um you know I'd love to see him hit the 40th Homer and um grab second base and pick it up like Ricky didz Shi might be the greatest of all time um but I hope does it yeah absolutely I'd be great for him to do it at home too what are the odds of him picking up second base zero he's got way too much respect RI nothing against Ricky you won't run out there and pick it up for him no I I went out to dug out tonight that's as far as on
